Snyder informed Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray of his decision in a Nov. 23 email.

“I was advised the property directly to the north of Whitney Plaza is seeking a referendum to convert to tourism use,” he wrote.

“In light of the emergence of this new group, I’m not certain it is in the best interest of Whitney Plaza LLC to seek a referendum at this time.”

Floridays Project Manager James Brearley announced in a Nov. 20 email to Longboat Key commissioners that he’s seeking a referendum to change the zoning of six parcels owned by William Saba from commercial to tourism use that allows six units per acre.

The properties at 6920, 6916 and 6910 Gulf of Mexico Drive, along with parcels at 6931, 6927 and 6919 Palm Drive, encompass approximately 1.5 acres of land between Whitney Beach Plaza and the vacant bank building at 6960 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

cause the voters to vote against it. He also has plans to discuss the hotel concept Floridays plans for a 1.5-acre site next door to his property.

Brearley can’t divulge the type of hotel or the number of units Floridays seeks for the 1.5 acres.

The zoning Floridays seeks would allow approximately nine units unless a future site plan received additional tourism units via a special exception.

“I’m not sure how they can sandwich a hotel like that on 1.5 acres,” Snyder said. “I would like to reach out to them to see if there’s any common ground.”

Snyder believes that a hotel for the north end will only work if it includes his Whitney Plaza site.

“The two sites need to be one,” Snyder said.

Snyder said he’s also encouraged and intrigued by Floridays’ desire for a hotel on the north end.

“A hotel group like that is what the Key needs,” Snyder said.

“They know how to build a hotel, and I want to see if I can help.”

Brearley said Floridays sought to acquire all of the property along Gulf of Mexico Drive from Whitney Beach Plaza north to the vacant gas station parcel.

In an Oct. 13 email exchange between Snyder and Michael Saunders & Co. agent Lee DeLieto Jr., who was acting on behalf of Floridays, Snyder wrote that he’s not willing to sell Whitney Beach Plaza for less than $3.7 million.

Brearley said he’s open to future discussions that include Whitney Beach Plaza.

“We worked hard to assemble the whole triangle, including the vacant bank building and the gas station, and we had some initial discussions with Whitney Beach Plaza, too,” Brearley said two weeks ago.

Brearley hasn’t had any luck getting the owner of the bank building to meet with him and a price point for Whitney Beach Plaza must be negotiated.

Brearley said the owner of the gas station is willing to sell the property at what he considers a reasonable price.

The gas station property is currently listed for $599,000.

Snyder said he lost Linen Locker as a plaza tenant last month because the owner didn’t have the traffic he needed.

“Whitney Plaza as a commercial-only site is just a temporary stopgap until something happens,” Snyder said. “There’s simply too much commercial on the site than what is sustainable.”

The future of Gulf of Mexico Drive utilities is on the line for a March ballot, but some worry about the funding split.

Some residents could pay up to $15,811.20 over 30 years to make above-ground wires disappear from the Key. For others, that cost would be no more than $955.50 over the same period.

Longboat Key’s registered voters will decide March 15, whether to surge ahead or cut the power to a $20.5 million neighborhood and side street power pole and utilities undergrounding project that would bury all utility lines and eliminate every power pole on the island.

The Longboat Key Town Commission voted 6-1 Monday night at its regular meeting to proceed with a referendum asking voters whether the town can issue bonds to bury utility lines in neighborhoods and side streets.

Property owners with existing underground utilities would pay for 18.5% of the project’s cost; owners with above-ground utilities would pay for 81.5%.

Owners of a home with underground utilities on Longboat Club Road would pay $513.35 if they opted to pay for costs upfront. If they financed it over 30 years at a 4.5% interest rate, they would pay $31.85 annually, or $955.50 over 30 years. The interest rate depends on the town’s creditworthiness.

But for a home on St. Judes Drive with overhead utilities, owners would pay a total upfront cost of $8,495.44. Financing costs over 30 years at the same interest rate, they would pay $527.04 annually, for a total cost of $15,811.20.

The proposed referendum question follows the $25.25 million Gulf of Mexico Drive

undergrounding project voters approved last month. The average annual extra cost to taxpayers for the Gulf of Mexico Drive project is about $5,400 over 30 years, paid as part of tax bills, or between $153 and $182 per year.

The bottom line on the proposed neighborhood project: “If this is approved, there will not be any overhead wires left in the town of Longboat Key,” said Town Manager Dave Bullock.

The project would also eliminate 80 to 90 power poles that would otherwise need to be added near Gulf of Mexico Drive to funnel power to neighborhoods with above-ground power lines.

Some question whether those who already have buried power lines and utilities will agree to a referendum that has them paying toward burying properties with above-ground utilities.

If the project is approved, the town will ask a judge to validate the bonds in case of legal challenges. But some commissioners worry the project won’t get the blessing of the judge, who must determine that there’s an islandwide benefit to the project.

Town staff and counsel say it’s reasonable to spread out costs because connecting utilities to future underground lines on Gulf of Mexico Drive would increase reliability, safety and aesthetics for all residents.

The commission also gave Bullock direction to extend a proposed fiber optic network to the approximately 5,000 residents who currently have underground utilities for an extra cost of about $2.7 million.

That amounts to approximately $30 annually over 30 years and will allow the whole Key to take advantage of a future network that will allow for faster broadband Internet speeds, enhance emergency personnel communication and offer other incentives for residents and town staff.

“We’ve already said the fiber optic network is a good thing for Gulf of Mexico Drive and the neighborhoods,” said Commissioner Pat Zunz.

Country Club Shores constituents Monday after the meeting: “I believe that adding the fiber for communications in the currently undergrounded neighborhoods is necessary.

Hopefully undergrounding currently overhead streets and adding a communication backbone for all neighborhood streets will pass in March making all of Longboat a more modern place to live.”

Country Club Shores resident and islandwide undergrounding supporter Bob Gault believes it’s crucial for the neighborhood project to be approved.

“We must effectively communicate to voters that we must pass this, or we will have 80 to 90 feeder line poles on GMD to bring the underground line up in the air to feed the neighborhood poles and snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory,” Gault said. “These new poles would not only defeat our improved GMD aesthetics but also increase risk of power failure in storms, which is exactly the opposite of our original objective.”

The commission will review referendum language for the neighborhood project on first reading at a special meeting Dec. 14 and is scheduled to approve the language on second reading Jan. 4.

Unicorp seeks to prevent Colony meeting A Unicorp National Development subsidiary is asking a Sarasota judge to prevent the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association from holding meetings until there’s full resolution of all the bankruptcy and legal issues surrounding the shuttered resort.

Unicorp Colony Units LLC filed a motion for a temporary injunction in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court Monday, seeking to halt upcoming meetings.

At the association’s annual owners meeting scheduled for Dec. 15, a new board is scheduled to be elected for the first time in more than two years. Owners are also scheduled to hear development presentations from the MW Development Group/The Lutgert Cos. and Unicorp President Chuck Whittall.

Whittall said he intends to still make a presentation “and make a significant offer to the owners” at the meeting if a judge allows it to be held.

Crosswalks: ‘They take me nowhere’

Residents say three crosswalks offer them a clear path — into grass and other vegetation.

The crosswalks came to fruition after Jo Schatterman, 73, of Elk Grove Village, Ill., was fatally struck by an SUV the evening of Jan. 28, 2012.

Schatterman was returning to the Key at dusk from St. Armands Circle with her sister, Myra Sandler, when she crossed the southbound traffic lane in the 2200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive en route to Sandler’s Islander Club condominium.

That fatality prompted discussions between the town and the Florida Department of Transportation for ways to promote pedestrian and bicycle safety.

Enhanced lighting for Gulf of Mexico Drive is also labeled a top priority and will be included as part of a $25.25 million undergrounding utilities project voters approved in November.

Longtime seasonal visitor Roger Staig thinks the Key’s four new crosswalks are a good idea, in general. But he sees one major flaw.

“Three of the four crosswalks literally take you from the sidewalk over to grass and shrubbery with nowhere to walk,” Staig said. “Why do I want to use them?

They take me nowhere.”

The four new crosswalks became operational last week, but many residents are questioning their placement.

“I am so excited about the crosswalk on GMD between Cedars East and Spanish Main Yacht Club, a route I frequent almost every day,” wrote Jane Oaks in a letter to the Longboat Observer.

“I can hardly wait to use the walk from the east of GMD to nowhere.

The walk on the west side of GMD ends in the middle of landscaping for Cedars West.”

Commissioner Lynn Larson, who advocated for a crosswalk location at the Country Club Shores beach access — that actually leads pedestrians from one sidewalk to another — agrees.

“If we had control over the crosswalks instead of FDOT, they would be in different places,” Larson said. “He (Staig) is speaking to the choir.”

The crosswalk just north of Companion Way on Gulf of Mexico Drive leads to bushes — but no sidewalk.

A Florida Department of Transportation crew finished striping the crosswalks on the road and made final adjustments to the lighting and push button activation systems last week.

The crosswalks have push buttons that allow pedestrians to activate rectangular flashing lights, alerting motorists of their crossing.

The crosswalks are located just north of Companion Way; at Banyan Beach Club in the 5600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive; at The Diplomat Condominium

Beach Resort in the 3100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive; and at the Country Club Shores beach access at Longboat Club Drive in the 1000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Town Manager Dave Bullock and Mayor Jack Duncan are hopeful the striping will now cause both pedestrians and motorists to be more alert.

For the last two weeks, residents using the crosswalks with activated lights without crosswalk striping reported difficulty crossing the road because many

motorists didn’t stop right away.

Duncan said the town needs to create “a full education process” that involves reaching out to Key association boards and area churches.

Duncan also suggests the town craft a brochure for area inns and hotels to distribute to Key visitors, urging them to use the crosswalks.

Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming said his officers will monitor the crosswalks as motorists and pedestrians adapt to the crosswalks.

Would crime watch deter burglars...or buyers?

Police rely on residents to be their eyes and ears in the community, but so far none of those eyes and ears has organized an official crime watch.

If you live in one of the safest communities in the country, is it necessary to form a neighborhood watch program and install signs letting burglars know they’re being watched?

Former Mayor George Spoll doesn’t think so.

Country Club Shores residents’ concerns about boat thefts that occurred in their canals over the summer triggered an October discussion and request for a possible neighborhood watch program, which would allow them to post crime watch signs in their community.

Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino informed those residents last month that a state statute requires them to form an official crime watch to obtain signs.

Spoll, though, thinks more formal groups and the signs that come with them are a bad idea.

“When people and potential future buyers drive into your neighborhood on Longboat Key, do you think neighborhood crime watch signs are going to make them have a good feeling about the community?” Spoll said. “No. It’s going to make them think there’s a crime problem.”

Spoll said he believes crime issues, like the Country Club Shores boat thefts, can be handled more discreetly.

“You talk to the police chief, and they put more patrols in your neighborhood,” Spoll said.

“That’s the way we’ve always done it, and it works well.”

Police officers already have unofficial crime watches in many neighborhoods. They attend neighborhood association meetings Key-wide to assist residents with ways to look for crime and meet residents who keep their eyes out for issues.

“We’ve always done something with communities, just not in an official capacity,” Rubino said.

“It’s always our philosophy to work with the communities on the Key and know who the eyes and ears of the communities are.”

Rubino doesn’t think crime watch signs are negative to a community.

“I’ve seen crime watch signs in both wealthy and rundown communities,” Rubino said.

So far, though, no Longboat Key communities have taken the police department up on its offer to assist in forming a neighborhood crime watch.

The concept is also likely simmering because boat thefts have also dwindled.

No boat thefts on the Key have been reported since June, when a Grady White boat was stolen in

the 500 block of Outrigger Lane.

A citizen helped thwart another boat theft after calling police Aug. 24, on Ranger Lane.

Rubino urges residents to continue letting police know if they see anything suspicious.

“We’re here to support the community and its efforts to keep this one of the safest communities out there,” Rubino said.

“That’s never going to change.”

The neighborhood watch concept began in the 1960s as a response to a rise in home burglaries. In 1972, the National Sheriffs Association formally endorsed it as a tool to educate neighbors to recognize and report crime.

The National Association of Town Watch estimates that at least 20,000 organized neighborhood groups exist today in the United States that use neighborhood watch techniques.

Neighborhood watch programs have proven to be one of the most effective ways to reduce crime, according to the International Foundation for Protection Officers.

The idea centers on neighbors recognizing suspicious activities, reporting crimes to police and keeping an eye on one other in the community.

Last season, the Centre Shops had potholed parking lots, chipped paint and decrepit roofs.

“When we took over the center, we just knew it was tired,” said Earl Fossum, vice president of ICORR Properties, which has managed the property since Sarasota-based FH Centre Shops LLC purchased it for $3.7 million in December 2014. “There had been a lot of deferred maintenance with work that wasn’t done that should have been done.”

This season, however, is a different story after a $540,000 renovation.

“The new remodel is 100 times better than what it was,” said Blue Dolphin Café owner Robbie Ball.

“...(The building) was suffering quite a bit.”

ICORR Properties began renovations with a new parking lot that was finished this fall. It repainted the buildings in Key West-style colors, replaced roofs, added solar panels, stained sidewalks and added LED lighting.

“I’m thrilled that it now looks like a vibrant, thriving center, and the new landlord has made some necessary repairs and some additional enhancements,” said Susan Goldfarb, Longboat Key Education Center executive director.

Before the renovations, several spaces at the center were available. Now, the retail space is 100% leased, and only three or four office spaces are available.

One new tenant is Décor de France, which operated on St. Armands Circle for 14 years and sells items such as home décor, gifts and art, much of which is imported from southern France.

Owner Jeannie Carraway opened in the new location Oct. 23 and plans to open Décor de France Bébé, which will sell baby items.

“The Centre Shops is a very nice mixture of businesses, and that’s what drew me in,” Carraway said.

The face lift is also drawing new customers.

“The new colors, the new roof, everything is attracting more business,” Ball said. “We have customers come in and state that the place looks really nice.”

COST VS. BENEFIT OF NO POLES If Longboat voters approve underground lines for neighborhoods, the town’s long-term debt will go up 580%. Stunning. But in context, it’ll be worth the investment. $12 million. $81 million.

By this time next year, Longboat Key property owners may well have committed themselves to increasing the town’s long-term debt 580% — from roughly $12 million to $81 million.

A stunning jump.

The breakdown: n $12 million in previously outstanding general obligation bonds; n $25.25 million in bonded indebtedness to convert to underground utility and fiber-optic lines along Gulf of Mexico Drive; n $20.5 million in bonded indebtedness to convert each neighborhood street to underground utility and fiber-optic lines — assuming voters approve the bond issue in March; n $23.8 million to cover three beach renourishment projects, $16 million of which voters approved in 2011.

And we’re not including the $20 million or so in the town’s unfunded pension liabilities.

Excluding the latter, if you add it up, the town’s long-term debt per property will increase from about $1,200 to $8,100; per full-time resident, the total would be $11,870.

These are all bell-ringing numbers, especially in a town where fiscal prudence has guided Longboat Key’s town commissions for most of the town’s 60 years.

This is not to alarm you that suddenly Longboat’s town commissioners have gone the way of Congress, where money is never an obstacle to foolish waste. Or that the town is on the brink of Detroit. It certainly is not.

If you measured the town’s fiscal strength on the basis of total debt to the estimated value of Longboat Key property, the town will remain in a solid state.

For instance, municipalities that manage conservatively, typically put a limit of long-term debt at 10% of taxable value. In that case, Longboat Key’s debt limit would be about $468 million. At $81 million, the town would be at only 17% of its limit. The city of Sarasota is in similar shape. Its current long-term debt is only 18% of $720 million limit.

The point of all of this number crunching is to provide perspective. Indeed, we’re reminded of the admonition that often came from Jim Michaels, the late editor of Forbes magazine. Whenever his writers reported the financial results of a company, he would bark: “Compared

to what?” In other words, what’s the total picture? How does everything fit together?

In the coming months, you can be sure Longboat Key’s financially astute voters will be asking questions about the effects on them of the town’s indebtedness. Particularly in light of Monday night, when the Town Commission voted in favor of asking voters whether to approve a $20.5 million bond issue to fund the installation of underground utility and fiber-optic lines in each neighborhood.

As you know, this referendum question will follow last month’s vote to approve a $25.25 million bond issue to fund underground tables the length of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

So of course, taxpayers will want to know: What does it all mean? How much will this cost me each year? Can I afford it? What’s more: Is the cost worth the benefit?

Only each individual property owner can answer the first two questions.

But on the latter — whether the cost is worth the benefit — if you evaluate it as you would investing to improve the condition of your home and its future value, you likely can conclude the answer is yes.

This is one of those times, it appears, when everything hits at once. It’s like replacing your roof and worn-out plumbing at the same time.

It’s a major financial burden. But the results are worth it: Paid for and completed for the next 20 to 30 years.

To be sure, the proposed annual cost for underground lines along Gulf of Mexico Drive and down every neighborhood street will be noticed in Longboaters’ annual tax assessments, assuming the second bond issue is approved (see page 3A). Combined, for some Longboat residents, the two underground assessments would add close to $700 a year to their town tax bill. But think of it the way liberal government spenders do: That’s roughly only seven great dinners for two at Harry’s Continental Kitchens or Euphemia Haye.

The value received for that $700 will be worth it — greater electric reliability and safety; a boost to property values for the aesthetics of no more electric poles; and access to 21st century fiber-optic communications.

Maybe you won’t have to stand in your driveway to talk on your cellphone.

OK, now to address the elephant in the room: the funding formula. Town commissioners adopted Monday a

formula that would require properties without underground utility lines to pay 81.5% of the $20.5 million neighborhood cost, while those that already have underground lines (primarily Bay Isles and properties on the Gulf side of Gulf of Mexico Drive) would pay 18.5% of the cost.

Up to now, we supported subsidies for no one. Those who do not have underground lines do not deserve an unearned benefit from those who have them and already paid for them.

We still think that should be the case.

But we’ve also been around long enough to know that the economically justifiable stance of subsidies for no one likely would not be politically viable.

Apparently, so did the town staff; it was crafty. To justify charging 18.5% to those who already have underground lines, the town staff noted: If the neighborhood lines are rejected, electric poles still would be required at the mouth of every street that intersects with Gulf of Mexico Drive. Because of that, all Longboaters would benefit by not having those poles. Their verdict: That justifies everyone on the Key paying something for no more poles in the neighborhoods.

Why fight it? A pole-less Key will be worth the price.

STEP UP, MR. ADAMS

Perhaps next week can be the beginning of the end to the sad saga and start of a new beginning for the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

The Colony Association — the owners of the Colony’s 237 units — is expected to hold its annual meeting Dec. 15. That is, if the state courts deny Orlando developer Chuck Whittall’s petition to stop the meeting.

Among the items on the association’s agenda: electing four new board members and hearing development proposals from Whittall and Longboat Key’s Manfred Welfonder and his partner, the Lutgert Cos. At least three people running for the four open seats on the board have development experience — a sign, perhaps, they are determined to push this drama to a conclusion. But as we noted years ago, there is one man who holds the key to the fate of the Colony: Andy Adams, owner of 70 units, giving him approval or veto power over any vote of the unit owners.

Heretofore, Adams has opted to stay behind the scenes. Here’s his chance to be a white knight and hero.

AN UNFREE SOCIETY IS WORSE THAN GUN CONTROL As usual, the anti-Second Amendment delusionalists (Obama, Clinton, et al) jumped on the anti-gun boat again after the San Bernardino, Calif., terrorist attack.

There is no convincing them whatsoever that if they had their wish — of taking guns away from law-abiding citizens — terrorism would not go away, nor would mass shootings stop.

Consider this recent post from economist Robert Higgs, senior fellow in political economy for the Independent Institute in Oakland, Calif.: When libertarians (or simply people with common sense) argue against proposals to solve a certain class of perceived problems (e.g., mass murders by odd-ball lunatics or crazed zealots) by impos-

ing more stringent government controls, closer surveillance and so forth, the proponents often reply: Well, if you don’t think my idea for government action will work, what do you propose instead to solve the problem? They are never happy when told that a better idea is to do nothing to solve it.

Yet, in truth, problems of a certain sort (e.g.,mass murders by odd-ball lunatics or crazed zealots) do not have a solution in anything even close to a free society.

These types of problems involve such unsystematic, infrequent and inexplicable actions that no one can anticipate and pre-empt them.

Lightning will strike people sometimes; nothing can be done about it except to advise people to stay inside during thunder storms and in no event to go outside carrying

an iron rod.

So, one might propose, for example, that the U.S. government stop blundering around in the Middle East carrying the “iron rods” that will attract the lightning of aggrieved Muslims whose friends, relatives or causes have been harmed or killed by American actions.

Absent such general palliatives, one must simply resign himself to the reality that occasionally — albeit very, very infrequently — bad things will happen.

Even locking every human being in a cell will not solve such problems, either, because bad things happen in prisons, too.

Indeed, nearly everything that happens in a prison or an unfree society is bad.

I am so excited about the crosswalk on GMD between Cedars East and Spanish Main Yacht Club, a route I frequent almost every day. I can hardly wait to use the walk from the east of GMD to nowhere.

The walk on the west side of GMD ends in the middle of landscaping for Cedars West.

By the way, Cedars West does not want anyone from Cedars East to use its property to get to the beach, so of what use is the crosswalk? Why does this seem so appropriate for Longboat Key?

Police found a worker who was authorized by the property owners to handle pressure-washing and painting. He said he had permission to stay at the residence while he painted the inside of the home. The owner of the painting company told police none of his employees has permission to stay at homes and must be out by 10 p.m. The homeowner gave permission to work longer hours to get the job done on time but didn’t authorize an overnight stay.

Town officials think drivers will “have to get used to” the crosswalks, and they expect many drivers to continue driving through the yellow flashing lights at the 45 mph speed limit until that happens.

I am totally mystified as to why Longboat Key officials possibly could think that flashing yellow lights will automatically stop traffic at a crosswalk, especially at night.

Gulf of Mexico Drive has blinking yellow lights in front of the fire department’s two stations. Drivers are accustomed to driving through these lights at the speed limit. Lights designed to stop traffic at our draw bridges, traffic lights and school buses are red, not yellow.

The crosswalk blinking lights should be red.

The busy season is upon us, and I fear that an elderly person or child will be lured into crossing at one of these locations, trusting the traffic will stop, as it does with the 5 mph traffic at the crosswalks in St. Armands Circle.

No driver needs to get accustomed to stopping for a flashing red light. The current situation is an accident waiting to happen.

Abplanalp, 60, who divides her time between Immensee, Switzerland and Longboat Key, began playing the Swiss instrument in 1996 for guests at the hotel her family owned. She wanted to play in 1995 but waited a year because she was pregnant, and playing the alphorn involves heavy exertion on the stomach and mouth.

“You have nothing to make the tunes with but your mouth and tummy,” Abplanalp said. “If you don’t play for two weeks, your stomach is sore.”

She spent three years teaching herself to play the 11-foot instrument well enough that she was comfortable playing for others.

used the instrument, which could be heard more than three miles away, to calm the cows. Farmers in Switzerland also used it to communicate with each other.

Today, Abplanalp is one of more than 4,000 alphorn players in Switzerland. She has performed for churches, the opening of a Swiss Congress, weddings and funerals.

“It’s an instrument you can use for joyful occasions but also sad occasions,” Abplanalp said.

Last year, Abplanalp played the alphorn at her father’s funeral.

“It was very special, and whenever I play that piece, I feel a special connection to him,” she said of her father, who came to Florida in 1985 and owned a condo on Lido Key. She bought her home on Longboat Key in May 2012.

When Abplanalp was traveling between Switzerland and Florida, she always brought her alphorn.

“On every flight, before arriving in Switzerland, they wanted me to play the alphorn to welcome Americans to Switzerland,” she said.

After Sept. 11, 2001, Abplanalp had to check her alphorn. When it arrived in baggage claim in five pieces, she decided to keep an alphorn in Florida.

When she is in town, she plays the instrument every day for half an hour on her patio, although she plays much more in Switzerland.

“My neighbors in Switzerland like it until 11 p.m.,” she said.

Her neighbor, Celia Edmundson, first heard Abplanalp’s alphorn almost three years ago.

“I thought someone was learning to play the trumpet and not doing a very good job,” she said.

Now, Edmundson enjoys listening to the alphorn as she watches the palm trees sway.

“To be listening to a different world, thinking how they were used in the Alps, is an amazing thing,” she said.

“It’s like running,” Abplanalp said. “Even if you are in a bad mood or sad, it puts all the sorrows out of your mind. Music should be there to cheer up other people with sound.”

WHAT’S THAT SOUND? The alphorn sounds similar to a trumpet and is made from pine, fir and spruce trees. The instrument normally produces sound in notes G and F.

Introducing Sarasota County Imagination Library & Children’s Literacy Endowment It’s a fact: The most significant factor influencing success in school is when parents and grandparents read to their infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

At the Library Foundation for Sarasota County, we are committed to placing more books into the hands of the county’s neediest children.

Starting Nov. 12, the Foundation will launch its first-ever campaign to raise $500,000 to fully fund the Children’s Literacy Endowment and assure the growth and success of the Sarasota County Imagination Library.

Here is our story: Created in 2009, the Imagination Library is a partner with the internationally acclaimed Dolly Parton Imagination Library, founded by the renowned singer.

Since 1996, Parton’s Imagination Library has provided

more than 750,000 children in the U.S. Canada, United Kingdom and Australia with a book a month from birth to 5 years.

The Sarasota County Imagination Library has placed more than 100,000 books into the hands of 3,500 Sarasota County children whose need for early literacy skills is the greatest.

How we did it: After an initial grant by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the Library Foundation assumed financial responsibility for the program. To ensure current children enrolled completed their five years, we raised more than $75,000 from local foundations and individuals.

Now we turn to the community for help.

Our new goal: The Library Foundation Board has

committed to raising $500,000

by Dec. 31, 2016, for the Children’s Literacy Endowment.

This will allow us to enroll more children into the Imagination Library or other early literacy programs — and bring the joy of reading to more children each year in Sarasota County.

early 1,200 people enjoyed food, drinks, music and fun at the fifth annual Longboat Key Gourmet Lawn Party Dec. 5, at the Longboat Key Club’s Islandside Driving Range.

Thirty-six establishments offered samples of their food, and several vendors served beverages.

Chairman Michael Garey expects to net a record $70,000 to $75,000 for the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key’s scholarships and local children’s charities — slightly less than the $80,000 he hoped to net.

“We had record in ticket distribution, record in actual attendance, record in gross sales and record in restaurants participating,” Garey said. “But we fell $6,000 short of our raffle ticket sales.”

But overall, Garey characterized the event as a success.

“Demand for the event was at an all-time high, and there was more buzz surrounding the event,” Garey said.
