Longboat resident and jazz drummer Al Hixon is no stranger to playing on Longboat Key. He spent several years playing at Lynches Landing and the Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort but has since played primarily in Sarasota.

Now, Hixon is returning to Longboat Key for six Thursdays at Amore by Andrea.

“These performances kind of continue our long run of gigs on Longboat Key,” Hixon said. “We’d like to get the Longboat audience back to one of our events. We lost a lot of people who didn’t want to drive over the bridge to our gigs in Sarasota.”

The Al Hixon Jazz quintet will perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays through Nov. 19, at Amore by Andrea, 555 Bay Isles Parkway. Call 383-1111 for reservations.

Town to celebrate sweet 60 The Town of Longboat Key and the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce will host Longboat Key’s 60th anniversary Nov. 14.

Guests will enjoy a performance by The Sarasota Jazz Project and fireworks.

Code Board dismisses boat buoyancy complaint An abandoned boat case doesn’t float with the town’s Code Enforcement Board.

One person’s treasure is another person’s code violation.

Longboat Key Code Enforcement Officer Chris Elbon saw a possibly abandoned, sinking sailboat covered in vegetation behind a home in the 700 block of St. Judes Drive North — a potential town code violation.

The owners of the boat, sisters Deborah Wisby-Trimmer and Jody Wisby, see a floating antique sailboat full of character that just needs some simple upkeep. They believe it’s worth saving and isn’t an eyesore to the island.

Code Enforcement Board members may not see the boat as a treasure, but they agreed that it’s not in violation of town codes.

The board voted unanimously to dismiss an abandoned vessel code case at its Oct. 12 meeting.

Elbon responded to a complaint from a neighbor Sept. 4, regarding an abandoned boat “with a hole in the hull, vegetation growing from it and which appears to be abandoned or discarded,” even though the boat is moored to the seawall behind the home at 759 St. Judes Drive N. Elbon sent the owners a notice of the alleged violation Sept. 10.

A Sept. 21 checkup of the vessel

revealed the boat was in the same condition, minus the vegetation growing out of the boat, which had been trimmed.

“It’s unlawful to abandon a vessel that may become a hazard to navigation,” he reported to the board.

Elbon reported a new and upto-date boat registration decal was also affixed to the boat when he reinspected the boat.

While Elbon stressed the boat may constitute a violation, he also told the board its perceived ability to float is deceiving.

“At high tide, the vessel shows buoyancy,” Elbon said. “At low tide, the vessel may be resting on the bottom of the canal.”

Jody Wisby read a four-page letter her sister, Deborah, asked her to read aloud because she was at a doctor’s appointment.

“It’s an antique sailboat,” Jody read aloud. “It’s not sunk.”

Deborah’s letter accused a neighbor she’s had issues with for years of making the complaint.

The sisters believe that neighbor is also responsible for damaging the hull.

“This case is outrageous and unfounded,” Jody said.

When board Chairman Robert Krosney asked Elbon to state his opinion on the boat, he declined.

“I’m merely presenting my findings,” Elbon said.

Elbon, though, did mention he believes there are issues with the code and how it’s written for abandoned vessels.

“The language isn’t that clear in regard to vessels,” Elbon said.

CODE’S TAKE ON ABANDONED BOATS “It is unlawful for any person to abandon any vessel within the waters of the town or to moor any vessel in such a manner that the vessel is or may become a menace to navigation. The presence of an unattended vessel that is unmoored, sinking, sunk, or discarded within the waters of the town shall be prima facie evidence of a violation by the owner of the vessel.”

“Under the current code, I leave the interpretation up to the board.”

Krosney called the boat “not pretty.”

“But beauty may be in the eye of the beholder,” Krosney said.

“This boat is moored to the seawall, doesn’t appear to be sinking and is floating at high tide.”

Krosney also noted the boat has a valid boat registration sticker.

“I don’t think you can call it discarded,” Krosney said.

Code board member Joel Mangel moved to dismiss the case, and the motion was approved by a 4-0 vote.

“It’s not out in the water being a menace to navigation,” said board member Beverly Shapiro. “It’s an antique boat they’re keeping and watching.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the referendum.

WHAT ARE WE VOTING ON? The referendum will determine whether the town can obtain bonds of no more than $25.25 million to bury overhead utilities along Gulf of Mexico Drive. The project also includes replacing/ enhancing street lighting along the road and installing a fiber optic network.

Debates about burying the Key’s utilities have flickered on and off for at least two decades.

But the impetus for the referendum came in 2014, when town staff proposed burying utilities in response to Florida Power & Light Co.’s plans to replace GMD power poles with larger, more hurricaneresistant poles.

The Longboat Key Town Commission initially rejected the idea but opted to reconsider after residents protested.

A charter amendment that 77% of Longboat Key voters approved in 1998 requires that the town obtain voter approval via a public referendum to obtain bonds of more than $800,000.

Extra contingency: $570,000

The commission considered the possibility of an islandwide project but opted to separate the GMD project from a potential neighborhood/side street project.

The split was due in part to concerns about fairness: A majority of the Key’s utilities are already underground. Commissioners and residents worried the estimated $42.2 million price tag of an islandwide project would cause voters, many of whom had already paid for their undergrounded utilities, to reject it.

Supporters say burying GMD utilities would improve the aesthetics and safety of the entire island — even for those residents whose properties are already undergrounded — because the street is its main thoroughfare.

The earliest date that Longboat Key utilities could be entirely underground, based on the town’s estimate that undergrounding both neighborhoods and GMD would take six years.

Referendum and election preparation costs: $400,000

IF VOTERS SAY ‘YES’

Collection of assessments and survey and design work will begin in 2016; construction will start in 2017 and take three years to complete.

If voters approve the Gulf of Mexico Drive referendum, the town will most likely draft a second referendum that addresses undergrounding in neighborhoods that currently have aboveground utilities. Town staff is not currently discussing the second referendum unless the GMD referendum passes, per instruction the commission gave town staff in September. The commission previously discussed a neighborhoods project estimated at $18.8 million that would be voted on and funded only by residents of above-ground communities. But commissioners want to find a fairer, more equitable way to fund that project.

IF VOTERS SAY ‘NO’

If the referendum doesn’t pass Nov. 3, FPL will resume efforts to install larger poles along Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The town will not hold a referendum to bury utilities for neighborhoods and side streets, but the commission could discuss another referendum option.

Communities with aboveground utilities could still opt to pay to bury their equipment, as Country Club Shores residents have vowed to do.

FPL letter sparks undergrounding confusion Lands End resident Ed Zunz and others on the north end recently received an Oct. 1 letter from Florida Power & Light Co. informing them that work is starting soon on a power pole-hardening replacement project for Broadway and sections of Poinsetta Avenue.

The letter sparked confusion among residents because FPL put its power pole-hardening project on hold until the town’s Nov. 3 referendum determines whether voters will approve burying utilities along Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Town Manager Dave Bullock told the Longboat Observer Oct. 16 the letter was sent out by mistake by an FPL project manager who was unaware that the project was postponed.

The letter, though, is also confusing to town staff, who had no idea that Broadway or any other road in the Longbeach Village was ever considered as part of the pole-hardening project.

“Broadway was never discussed as part of the GMD project,” Bullock said.

While Bullock is still working with FPL to come up with answers for the Broadway component, the town is investigating whether it can incorporate burying power lines and utilities along Broadway as part of the GMD referendum question.

Noting that referendum language states bonds would “finance undergrounding electrical, communications, fiber optics and other utilities and installation of street lighting relating to Gulf of Mexico Drive,” Bullock said the question allows for undergrounding utilities that relate to the Gulf of Mexico Drive project.

“It’s a policy question we’re working on,” Bullock said.

GMD crosswalk construction slated for November Construction of four crosswalks on Gulf of Mexico Drive to improve pedestrian traffic will begin in early November and be completed before Christmas.

On the north end, two crosswalks will be built at Companion Way and near the Banyan Beach Club to accommodate pedestrians north and south of the Centre Shops.

On the south end, crosswalks will be built near the Diplomat Condominium Beach Resort just north of Bay Isles Road and at the Country Club Shores beach access just north of Longboat Club Road’s private entrance.

Crosswalks will have push buttons for pedestrians to press that will activate rectangular flashing lights to alert motorists of their crossing.

Town officials and the Bay Isles Master Association will meet to discuss the possibility of using the Bay Isles Beach Club, 2111 Gulf of Mexico Drive, as an access point for a mid-Key sand truck haul beach project that will likely start after season in 2016.

The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26, in the second floor meeting room of SunTrust, 510 Bay Isles Road.

Although the town has agreed to pay for the restoration of landscaping and other costs associated with creating a truck path for the dumping of 30,000 cubic yards of sand to the beach access, Bay Isles board mem-

ber George Spoll is concerned it would set precedent, and the town would request to use the access periodically for future beach projects.

Vice Mayor Terry Gans, a Bay Isles resident, said he’s hopeful the town and the community’s board can have a meaningful discussion about the possibility of using the access.

It will take planning staff approximately eight weeks to review and approve building plans once they are submitted in the coming weeks. The restaurant will take approximately seven months to construct and will be open in time for next season.

“We intend to be good neighbors and will bring an asset to the area we think this community will be proud of,” Leonard said.

Leonard and Caragiulo, who own the Shore Diner on St. Armands Circle, plan to create a similar Shore restaurant in the Village that Leonard says “will have a woodsy, surf watch, Old Florida feel to it while keeping traditions like stone crabs.”

Planning board Chairman Jim Brown said he believes the new restaurant enhances the quality of the Village, noting the site plan calls for a continuation of landscaping and Broadway sidewalks that currently end at the property.

The planning board approved site plan and special exception applications for the new Shore 6-0. The approval allows the owners to request a permit to demolish the existing restaurant and submit building plans for a new restaurant that will be up and running a year from now.

It’s the final step Leonard and Caragiulo needed to develop the former Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant property. The Longboat Key Town Commission will not review either application.

A site plan and special exception application submitted July 28 originally sought a 299-seat restaurant as part of a plan “for a banquet suite for private parties on the second floor.”

As backlash for the application grew, Sarasota land use agent Peter Dailey submitted a revised application Sept. 4 that nixed a proposed second floor and reduced the seat count back to the original 185 seats for which former Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant already had approval.

The new applications also increase the number of parking spaces from 47 spaces to 55, even though the site is only required to have 47 spots. A larger dock for boaters will increase the number of boat slips from 14 to 16, and the restaurant will be allowed to use some of its 185 seats for outdoor dining.

Village residents had just a few questions about the height of the new restaurant and its landscape buffering.

What happens if Town Manager Dave Bullock’s wife accidentally backs over him with their boat, or he’s struck by a bus or a beer while crossing the street?

After hearing commissioners toss out three what-ifs about his possible demise during a discussion about his eventual replacement at Monday’s workshop, Bullock begged them to stop.

“I respectfully request no com-

missioners come up with any more scenarios about how I go out,” Bullock said.

Joking aside, Bullock said he plans to fill the assistant town manager position he created three years ago by the end of the year.

“I’m going to have to have someone help me here, especially if the referendum passes on undergrounding,” Bullock said.

“There’s a pile of work to do, and I don’t have an appetite for a slower pace.”

Bullock said he’s relied heavily

and I have talked about this a lot, and I just don’t have a date.”

Bullock, though, reminded commissioners his contract requires him to give 90 days notice before he departs. And Bullock said he intends to give commissioners even more than 90 days to find a replacement.

“I would work to create an orderly transition at the appropriate time,” he said.

Bullock also told commissioners he’s confident his department heads can help run the town in an emergency situation.

“The work I produce is produced through department heads, and it’s not my style to hold stuff and keep it away from others,” Bullock said. “You have a department head group through which you could pick someone to keep moving forward. Then you would do a search that would produce very qualified candidates.”

Commissioners were pleased with Bullock’s plan of action.

“The town manager has developed a stronger staff than what he inherited,” said Vice Mayor Terry Gans. “It’s my goal this will be even a more desirable place to work than when we hired Dave.

The path we’ve been on is the right one.”

Bullock said the town will have no problem finding a pool of “very qualified candidates” interested in being town manager.

“Part of what I do is stimulate interest in what I do by telling others all the time I have the best job in the state,” Bullock said.

“And I do have the best job in the state.”

Bullock didn’t divulge much and declined the offer for them to provide input for his next hire.

“If you’re asking me to publicly pick one staff member that could do that, I’m not real interested in that,” he said.

Bullock, though, does welcome input from commissioners on what kind of attributes they would like to see for his eventual replacement.

“At some point, it would be good to provide attribution for a future town manager and the kind of person you want,” Bullock said. “It may be changed by future commissions, but you have opportunity to provide the public what you want in a town manager, and that description probably won’t change much over time.”

In the meantime, Bullock said he has no plans to retire any time soon, even though he’s beginning the fifth year of a five-year commitment he gave the commission when he was hired in October 2011.

Stone crab season still cracking despite lost claws Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant is no more, but diners still have claw-cracking options.

STONE CRAB CELEBRATION The Longboat Key Club will celebrate stone crab season at its fifth annual Bacchus on the Beach Nov. 12 and Nov. 13.

The event kicks off Nov. 12, with three wine dinners: Pigs & Vino, Across All Vines and Evening at Portofino.

Nov. 13 is the Stone Crab Celebration & Winemaker Auction, a tasting on the beach that features hundreds of wines and stone crabs, among other culinary offerings.

This year’s beneficiary is Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.

“People wait for stone crab season every year,” dining manager Stacey Karis said. “Snowbirds love it. It’s not a crab you can get up north.”

Dry Dock doesn’t freeze its stone crabs, so it orders a limited supply.

“We do not keep a long shelf life on ours,” Karis said. “It’s always a good idea if you’re coming just for stone crabs to call ahead and see if we still have them.”

On the Gulf side, Maison Blanche will also serve a limited number of the Florida delicacy.

“They’re very fresh, and we cannot keep them for a long time,”

owner Jose Martinez said. “When we are out, we are out. They’re one of our best items.”

Additionally, Harry’s Continental Kitchens will begin selling stone crabs this year.

“There’s a real void on the island with Moore’s being gone,” owner Harry Christensen said. “I hope I can give a service for the people on the island who are looking for a place that has stone crabs now that Moore’s is gone.”

Stone crab season runs from Oct. 15 to May 15.

“They’re right from the water you see from the restaurant,” Quattromani said. “They’re right there. You can’t get any fresher or more Florida than stone crab.”

As snowbird season begins, so does one of Florida’s tastiest times of year: stone crab season.

Now that Longboat Key is without the historic Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant, locals and visitors alike are looking for a replacement, and there are several options on the Key. “We go through thousands of pounds every year,” said George Quattromani, chef at Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub. “They’re here for a certain part of the year, and then they’re done.

Any other seafood, you can get year-round.”

“They’re a very unique flavor,” said Karen Bell, of A P Bell Fish Co. in Cortez. “I like mine with lemon, and many like it with butter, but you can eat a stone crab just plain with nothing on it.”

If supply is low, crabs can cost up to $30 a pound. If crabbers have a strong season, prices fall.

“We’re always hoping for better because last year wasn’t very good,” Bell said. “The crabs didn’t want to vacation here.”

Because of an expected increase in supply due in part to the cloing of Moore’s, Quattromani expects to sell 50% more stone crabs than he did last year.

Other developed countries manage to take care of their people through good infrastructure, medical care and education, so why not the great USA? “The masses” you mention in your typically derogatory tone are our fellow countrymen, may I respectfully remind you. The only sad commentaries came from the writer of your Bernie Sanders editorial, whose heroes, Friedrich Hayek and Ayn Rand wanted to turn America into Zimbabwe or Somalia for the benefit of the 1%.

Regarding your Oct. 8 editorial on Bernie Sanders, I appreciate your emphasizing his well-developed platform, especially the emphasis on improving infrastructure, the education system and job opportunities.

These will bring more money into the economy, more profits for capitalists to invest and make the United States a more robust nation better able to support improvements in our military capabilities.

Economics and social justice are like Ayn Rand’s horse and carriage: You can’t have one without the other.

Investing in the U.S.’s rapidly changing culture and investing in education (and re-education) is needed to prepare our workforce for future entrepreneurial and capitalist needs. Jobs are created at the rate of 35,000 to 40,000 jobs for every $1 billion invested by private capital and government infusion.

Our country has grown to twice the population that Rand experienced when she arrived from Russia in her mid-20s, and our worldly status from our economic growth is many times greater now. She enjoyed the safety net of Social Security that today Sanders wants to ensure is available for retirees in the future.

Rand also espoused objectivism, which is important today for rural Americans who do not have access to the Internet, coverage that will provide them with medical, educational and job-opportunity support.

Today, this Internet support is a basic need, just like telephone, electric and safe-drinking water systems accomplished in the 1930s. Government infrastructure needs to provide the Internet to rural America because laissez-faire capitalist communication companies do not want to invest their profits to solve this problem.

With all of his experience, Sanders is well grounded in objectivism.

Finally, while you may understand capitalism and individualism, as do I, it is evident that you don’t understand democratic socialism. People in Canada own their own property; Scandinavians hardly live in a world where their rights are only “those that the government permits them to enjoy.”

I understand your Observer audience is conservative, and the majority of Sarasota is conservative to a terrifying degree. However, if you would like a paper that actually has some kind of standards and isn’t just a joke, then I would refrain from writing pieces on Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Your Opinion Oct. 8 stated many facts about his campaign that were all incredible and rewarding for all Americans. Maybe the wealthy folks

It’s easy to make statements if you don’t bother to check the facts. The fact is no business makes any income without the employees who do the work!

The minimum wage should have reached $21.72 an hour in 2012 if it kept up with increases in worker productivity and inflation, according to a March study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

While advancements in technology have increased the amount of goods and services that can be produced in a set amount of time, wages have remained relatively flat, the study points out.

Increasing the minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $15 per hour, as Sen. Sanders proposes, would decrease the cost of government to the taxpayer an estimated $174.1 billion, according to the U.S. Bureau of Budget — by almost eliminating the earned-income credit and substantially reducing the need for food stamps.

To back this up, consider the following: A family of four with two minor children, if both parents worked full time at $7.25 per hour, would earn $30,160 per year. They would not be eligible for food stamps but would be subsidized $2,573 by the taxpayer.

The same family earning $15 per hour would pay $8,178 income tax, a net gain of $10,750 each year. Not only would this reduce the federal budget $174.1 billion, but Uncle Sam would receive billions of additional tax dollars.

Our infrastructure is fast becoming antiquated. We need far more than the $1 trillion Bernie Sanders is suggesting just to keep up. And, it is estimated that each $1 billion spent creates about 42,000 high-paying jobs, creating a vibrant economy and billions of dollars in additional tax revenue.

Ask our neighbors in Canada about health care, where it is a huge success.

In 2013, U.S. health care spending increased 3.6% to reach $2.9 trillion, or $9,255 per person. The Wall Street Journal claimed that Sanders’ proposal would cost $1.8 trillion per year — what a savings!

Results of most estimates suggest that we actually would save hundreds of billions of dollars with a universal single pay program at the same time providing better medical care. By the way, Medicare is not free. As seniors, SEE LETTERS ON PAGE 9A

Defense of free market shows a crude trust

Your saying that the “free market … certainly works better than government regulation” flies in the face of the illustration you later provide about dentistry.

You say that the display of the practitioner’s college and medical school diplomas are certifications that give consumers assurance that the dentist knows what he or she is doing. In fact, such assurance is provided not by framed artifacts on the wall but by the Florida Dental Act, which provides that the person who wishes to practice dentistry must obtain a license, issued under Chapter 466 of the Florida Statutes. It requires each applicant to submit an application and fees (about $2,500, as well as other costs) to meet certain education requirements to be able to take the dental licensure examination and successfully complete the dental licensure examination requirements.

Your reliance on the free market, as Pope Francis says, “… expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.”

Regarding your editorial in the Oct. 1 Longboat Observer: We are surprised at your uniformed name-calling aimed toward citizens you seem to know little about.

After WWII, about half of college students were veterans on the G.I. Bill, which paid about $500 tuition per year plus about $113 living expenses per month. Adjusted for inflation, that cost was considerably more than the Sanders’ proposal and was largely responsible for creating 30 years of prosperity.

With more than 5 million jobs going unfilled because of a lack of well-trained applicants, it’s about time we made higher education more affordable.

Staggering student debt is also a drain on our economy, as many students leave college with so much debt they are unable to even afford to buy a home. I could go on, but I again suggest you check the facts in you next editorial.

Sanders supporters frequently neglect to answer the crucial question: From where will all of the money to pay for the free college education, free health care and higher minimum wages come? Taxing the rich? Which is to say punish success.

The “rich,” whom Sanders and others so despise, by the way, don’t have all of the money required to provide all of the free stuff Sanders wants to promise. And when you take more of their money to give it to the government, that means there is less money in the private sector to create jobs, grow the economy and increase the standard of living.

What should we do? Borrow more from the Chinese? Go further into national debt — and sentence America’s future generations to a declining standard of living? — Ed.

importation of hundreds of dogs and cats from other states. At the Sarasota County Commission meeting on Sept. 21, those opposing the ordinance outnumbered those in favor. Furthermore, most of them were from other cities and even other states and were much “louder” (to quote you) than the side in favor.

The retailers that will be “punished” are those pet stores that continually mislead the consumer, promising they don’t buy from puppy mills, and stating the puppies are healthy when they are not. One example, Sarasota Petland buys from a breeder in Iowa that harbors over 1,400 dogs and had five violations at the last inspection this past August (inspections occur

once a year, if that).

Through pet stores, refunds for a sick or dead puppy are almost impossible to obtain, though Florida pet law states otherwise.

And if a store offers to exchange the puppy for another one — often because the buyer’s veterinarian deems it too sick to recover — let me ask you this: How many people do you think want to trade in their sick puppy they have fallen in love with for a “replacement,” knowing that the sick puppy will certainly meets its doom?

There can be no “buyer beware” if buyers are not given the facts and if the pet stores do not abide

by Florida pet law, which they do not. Nor does your “free market” concept work in this instance.

Almost 100% of the time, puppy purchases are an impulse buy.

They feel sorry for the puppy in a small cage with grate flooring, no toys and no bed. It is not like buying a toaster, though the puppies are treated as such by the breeders and retailers.

As for “industry self-regulation” — there are minimal USDA regulations in place that are virtually ignored by the mass dog breeders and are impossible to enforce. Retailers continue to knowingly purchase from these breeders because those are the only places to buy cheap, mass produced puppies. And to equate this to going to the dentist only shows that the author of this piece knows little or nothing about the pet industry.

There are no certifications that can prevent the animal abuse and consumer fraud that runs rampant in the puppy industry.

Petland’s puppies come from the Midwest, most often from puppy brokers there that ship the puppies in wire cages in a semi truck from Missouri to Sarasota.

No ethical breeder would hand over their puppies, which are purchased for a minimal amount by the way, to such a truck.

If there were a valid compromise we would be all for it, as would most likely have the 77 communities in this country that have passed this ordinance, 36 of them in Florida. The proposed ordinance is the only way to help stop the horrific animal abuse and protect the consumer.

THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE 5:29 a.m. — 2300 block of GMD Suspicious Person: A woman reported a suspicious person in her condominium lobby. The man told police he and his family just moved into the building.

FORCED ENTRY 7:05 p.m. — 600 block of Marbury Lane Burglary: A woman told police she found her kitchen door forced open when she returned with her dogs. She called 911 and didn’t enter the home after discovering the door’s lock lying on the floor.

Police reported the door was forced open, and dresser drawers were opened in the master bedroom and bathroom. Purses, jewelry and clothes were stolen. The woman said several contractors had been in the home recently, performing bids for future work.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? 8:46 p.m. — 500 block of Harbor Cove Circle Noise Disturbance: A woman reported that she heard a woman screaming at a man on a neighboring deck earlier. The housekeeper of the residence told police that her daughter-in-law was screaming at her husband to get his attention because he is hearing-impaired and was pressurizing the exterior of the home.

DRINKING AND DIVING 10:27 p.m. — 1200 block of GMD Public Drunkenness: Police found a man who’d had too much to drink unconscious in a swimming pool. He was transported to the hospital for observation, and police informed the man’s mother of his situation.

PARKING PROBLEM 9:43 a.m. — 1100 block of GMD Welfare Check: A security guard told police a woman hit a curb with her car when pulling into a condominium complex. She was shaken by the accident and given a ride to her unit.

For the 11th year, Longboaters can get hooked on the Longboat Key Historical Society’s Old Thyme Fish Fry. This year’s event is scheduled for Oct. 30, at Cedars Café and Tiki Bar. The tradition dates back to the 1950s, when the newly formed Longboat Key volunteer fire department held a fish fry to raise money for its first fire truck.

The fish fries eventually stopped until the Historical Society resurrected the tradition in 2005. Each year, the event serves as a way for residents to reunite with their friends in the fall.

“It’s kind of like the first social event of the season,” Historical Society President Pam Coleman said. “It’s the first time everybody coming back from the summer gets together.”

Tickets this year are $30 and include grouper, sides such as hush puppies and coleslaw, Key lime pie and two beers or glasses of wine.

The Historical Society is limiting the event to 200 people this year, and food will be served by waiters, rather than self-served.

There will also be tables and chairs for 60 additional people compared to last year, so guests won’t have to sit on pool chairs.

The event will feature a 50/50 raffle, and attendees can enjoy music by the Blues Pig Band, which will perform Longboat Key-themed songs.

Attendees fill their plates with salad, hush puppies, fried and grilled fish, coleslaw and Key lime pie at last year’s fish fry.

“Everybody just loves to come to this,” Historical Society board member Vera Freeman said. “Just seeing all the people coming in having a wonderful time is a great thing.”

Proceeds from the event and raffle will go toward the Historical Society’s programs. Coleman expects to raise $1,200 this year.

“It’s just a good ole’ gettogether,” said Shirley Beachum, who helped organize the event.

Born Nov. 27, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Clay was a graduate of Carleton College and Harvard Law School. He was a senior partner in the Chicago law firm Mayor, Brown and Platt until his retirement in 1988. At that time, he was also president of the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) in Chicago. He resigned as president and was hired as the first executive director of PILI. In this new role, he expanded the reach and positive impact of PILI programs on the lives of many who could not otherwise access legal services.

In 1952, Mr. Clay helped persuade Illinois Gov. Adlai Stevenson to run for president as part of a “Draft Adlai” movement. In 1968, he became chairman of a Chicago group that supported Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s first bid for president, which persuaded President Lyndon Johnson not to seek re-election due to strong opposition to the Vietnam War. When McCarthy ran again in 1976, he picked Mr. Clay as his running mate in Illinois. Their ticket received 60,000 votes.

In 2000, Mr. Clay published his book of words “by, for and against our presidents from Washington to Clinton,” titled “Snollygosters, Airheads and Wimps,” with a foreword by his longtime friend, McCarthy.

Born Feb. 11, 1929, in Providence, R.I., Mr. Corb was an Eagle Scout who joined the Army in his senior year of high school. After basic training, he served in the Panama Canal Zone as a member of the U.S. Army Band. He went on to graduate from Boston University School of Law. Mr. Corb was president of the Lee Institute, in Brookline, Mass., one of the first schools to specialize in real estate training. He loved to teach and was responsible for educating nearly 100,000 real estate brokers throughout Massachusetts.

He was the author of several books about real estate and worked with the state to prepare required curricula and tests for licensure.

He was an avid skier, traveler, hiker, boater and accomplished musician.

Mr. Corb was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Hively Corb. He is survived by his wife, Joan Corb; sons Kenneth Corb and Brinton Corb; four grandchildren; and two nephews.

A service was held Oct. 19, in Woodstock, N.H. Burial was held Oct. 20, at Pine Grove Cemetery, in Topsfield, Mass.

ore than 800 people gathered Saturday on St. Armands Circle for the sixth annual Taste of St. Armands.

Eighteen local businesses offered samples of their food and drinks, and guests enjoyed live music and a fashion show by Les Ciseaux.

The night’s charity was Take Stock in Children, which offers college scholarships to lowincome, academically qualified students. The winner of the 50/50 raffle, Lynches Pub & Grub owner Jason Burns, donated his $565 in winnings to the charity.

Count hospitality industry veterans Al Clarizia and Terri Noyes as the latest people on the Gulf Coast to not really get the whole retirement thing.

The couple ran the Sea Coast Inn Bed & Breakfast in Cape Cod, Mass. for more than 20 years; Noyes took care of front-of-thehouse tasks, while Clarizia, a contractor, worked behind the scenes. They recently sold the inn and began to spend more time in their home on Longboat Key — enough time that they saw an opportunity to buy a unique property in downtown Sarasota: Hotel Ranola, a 90-year-old building with eight apartments and nine hotel rooms.

“It’s a lovely old building,” Noyes said. “We are committed to retaining its original beauty and tradition.”

And like that, the couple is back in business. They bought the hotel and the building. Noyes declines to disclose what they spent on the hotel, but they paid $2 million for the building, according to Sarasota County property records. All the apartments, mostly studios and one-bedroom units, are leased.

On the corner of Indian Place and Ringling Boulevard, Hotel Ranola has had several owners in the past decade. Area entrepreneurs Robert and Kim Livengood bought the hotel in 2008 and rebuilt it into an art-deco style property. They owned it for two years, then sold it to another couple.

Noyes and Clarizia plan to keep the aesthetic and décor the same as it’s been since 2008. They did make some minor renovations to the inside of the rooms, particularly on linens and carpets.

Clarizia said the project goes back to the number one lesson he’s learned in hospitality: The first impression is paramount to long-term success.

“When you walk into a building, if it’s dirty, then people will think the rest of the building is dirty,” Clarizia tells the Business Observer. “You have to keep the rooms clean and well-maintained.”
