The Library Foundation of Sarasota County reached its goal of raising $500,000 for its Children’s Literary Endowment.

The endowment will fund the foundation’s chapter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which allows 900 children to receive a new book every month until they turn 5.

The campaign, launched in December 2015, raised $451,075. The final $50,000 is coming from the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation, bringing the grand total to $501,075.

Looking Ahead: Big Pass Siesta Key residents will keep fighting to block the Lido Key renourishment despite state support.

With just a few days remaining in 2016, Lido Key residents got some good news to take into the new year.

On Dec. 22, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued an important update on a project that has divided Sarasota residents for more than three years. The DEP announced its intent to issue a permit for the Lido shoreline renourishment project that would use sand dredged from Big Pass.

For Lido residents — and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and city of Sarasota, the two groups behind the proposal — the DEP’s announcement was a confirmation of a deeply held belief. Lido Key needs sand to reinforce its eroded shoreline, and Big Pass is the best place to get that sand.

For Siesta Key residents and other opponents of the project, the news was a setback. Groups such as Save our Siesta Sand 2 and the Siesta Key Association have questioned the impact the Big Pass dredge would have on Siesta’s shore, and they say they haven’t gotten satisfactory answers.

The DEP downplays those concerns in a document announcing the intent to issue a permit. The state agency said the Army Corps of Engineers application provides sufficient engineering data to demonstrate the project minimizes potential adverse impacts to Siesta Key. In the wake of the DEP announcement, neither side is content to sit back. Peter van Roekens, chairman of Save our Siesta Sand 2, is in the process of appealing the DEP decision.

Even if that effort is unsuccessful, there are several hurdles the project has left to clear that will offer more opportunities for protest.

“We’re certainly in this for the long haul,” van Roekens said. “It’s not something that will go away.”

Catherine Luckner, a Siesta Key Association board member, is taking a long-term view.

Although she said she believed there was sufficient evidence for the DEP to reject the application, she’s hopeful that evidence will make an impact as the project continues through the approval process.

“They have to do an environmental assessment that’s proper, get funding, finalize construction plans, get a permit to proceed,” Luckner said.

Beyond the seemingly inevitable legal challenges to the project, funding may be the biggest challenge the proposed dredging faces. City engineer Alex DavisShaw said work on the project could begin next winter — but

only if about $18 million in federal funding can be secured.

As for the concerns of Siesta residents, DavisShaw encouraged anyone with questions to speak up so representatives from the city or Army Corps can provide the information they’ve gathered in support of the project. City representatives have said the coastal system takes sand from Lido Key and transports it to Big Pass — so in essence, the project would just take back sand that was previously Lido’s.

“I think the more people understand what’s going on and why it does what it does, I think that will help people understand where the plans are coming from,” DavisShaw said.

She added that the city is working to create a more robust long-term monitoring system for the region’s coastlines. The city plans to reach out to the county and potentially Longboat Key to collaborate on that effort.

“The more information we get, the more we can see what’s going on now and into the future,” she said.

Lido Key residents, meanwhile, are evaluating their options for countering the legal challenge Siesta residents plan to mount.

Lido Key Residents Association President Carl Shoffstall continues to stress the urgent need for the proposal to move forward.

“We don’t want to get into a war with Siesta,” Shoffstall said. “But we’ve got to protect our assets out there.”

As Longboat Key voters prepare to vote on two density referendums in March, the Observer sought the mayor’s take on one, and a property owner’s on another.

oters this year may change the face of Longboat Key forever. Or not.

In March, residents will consider a request from Unicorp National Developments to pursue more density for the redevelopment of the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort (see Page 10A for more on that issue), and another request from Whitney Beach Plaza owner Ryan Snyder to develop his shopping center.

After voters rejected plans for a mixed-use development on Snyder’s property in November, he will return with an all-residential concept.

The Longboat Observer received input from stakeholders on the referendums.

Longboat Key mayor The question as to what will happen in the March 2017 referendum on whether to permit increased density on the Colony (Beach & Tennis Resort) site is asking “what will happen.”

Since my crystal ball shattered on Nov. 8, without it I only know Longboat Key voters will have the opportunity to pass their judgment on a key question that they have been asking for the past six years: “What’s going to happen with the Colony?”

The sponsor of the referendum, who wishes a “yes” vote, will have a considerable education and persuasion job to achieve his goal. Longboat voters have, in the past, been very particular in granting approval to requests for density increases. They need to be convinced that such an increase could be of an overall benefit to the long-term health, vitality and appeal of our island town. They need to be convinced that the negatives they possibly see are overcome by the positives of the project. And they need to keep in mind that their vote is merely the first step in potentially getting the project to the next step: Presenting a development plan to staff, the Planning and Zoning Board, and ultimately, the Town Commission.

If their vote is “no,” as my still functioning Magic 8-Ball would say to the applicant, “future cloudy, shake again.” Whether he does, “future cloudy.”

As to the two referendums last November being predictive of anything, they were perhaps a unique expression by the voters in a unique elec-

tion. There had been no effort to educate voters on what the proponents were seeking. There were no angry letters to the editors against. There was absolutely no heat at all.

There was, however, as much “no” voting overall in the election as “yes,’’ and these two relatively small ballot items may have been caught up in that phenomenon.

In the end, the voters will consider the information, the arguments, and how these fit with their vision for the future of Longboat Key. And they will give their answer.

Several town commissioners commented on the lack of public relations surrounding the initial referendum request. The (Floridays Development Co.’s) hotel referendum failed in August with a vote of approximately 25% in favor and 75% against. The hotel developer employed some questionable public relations tactics, which left a bad taste with a lot of folks on the island.

Being on the heels of the hotel referendum, I wrestled back and forth with whether or not I should actively promote the Whitney Plaza referendum. I ultimately decided a quiet approach was best. The Whitney Plaza referendum failed with a vote of (approximately) 40% in favor and 60% against.

Why am I seeking a second referendum? Had I known the hotel developer was going to propose what it did, I would have waited to seek the Whitney Plaza referendum. I believe the hotel referendum had a negative impact on the Whitney Plaza referendum. My quiet approach likely did not work. I regret not making an attempt to educate the electorate on what I wanted to do. I want the electorate to understand my proposal will decrease traffic on the island, as opposed to increasing it.

Several residents on the north end approached me in the weeks leading up to the initial referendum voicing their concerns over the mixed-use nature of my proposal. Each wanted the property to be strictly residential. I

submitted the mixed-use concept as that is what the town lobbied for. The new request contains no commercial component.

No matter how I spin it, I’m seeking a second bite at the apple. I have a shopping center that has struggled for years and is 50% vacant. I need the residents to approve a referendum. Alternatively, I need the residents to support the businesses at Whitney Plaza so they will thrive and support more growth. Those are the avenues available to me, and I will continue to try both until one works.

Looking Ahead: Underground-utilities project OBSERVER STAFF

lthough island residents may not see much construction along Gulf of Mexico Drive in 2017, the town will ramp up activities this year related to the roughly $50 million project to bury utility lines islandwide. The Longboat Observer spoke with a resident and a town official for their take on what questions remain for the project in 2017 and what progress it will make in the coming year.

Residents of Longboat, observing the surveyors in action, are asking the natural questions about “what’s next.” The two questions I hear most often are: n Which business models are

being considered to profitably operate the town-owned dark fiber? n If the actual undergrounding construction costs are less than estimated, will the town reimburse those taxpayers who already paid the entire assessment?

I don’t know the answer to either question!

I do know the town is working with highly qualified folks who specialize in implementation of dark fiber networks owned by municipalities. Many small municipalities have already launched their own fiber networks. Dozens of other communities are beginning the process, just as we are.

I’m sure Longboat will have no difficulty developing a successful business model.

Reimbursement for taxpayers who prepaid has been discussed at recent Town Commission meetings — about 20% of the taxpayers have already paid their full assessments, resulting in prepayments of about $5 million.

While no vote that I am aware of has yet been taken on reimbursements, the commissioners are all sensitive to the issue. When the actual costs are known, I’m confident the Town Commission will do the right thing. For those who prepaid, it seems sensible to ask your commission — or those running for office — how he stands on the issue.

One thing I do know is we will all learn a lot more about undergrounding during the next 12 months!

Assistant town manager Looking ahead, 2017 will be a busy year setting the stage for work to begin on undergrounding all the overhead utility lines throughout the town.

Voters have approved almost $50 million of authorized debt to improve safety, enhance power reliability and rid the island of unsightly poles and destruction of the tree canopies lining the right of way.

Survey work is underway, and the town has paid the required deposit to Florida Power and Light, which will furnish the design of the underground system.

By March, the town will have selected a construction manager to work with town staff and interface with FPL and the other service providers. A business plan will be developed to guide

the design and installation of a fiber optics network coupled with smart technologies to enhance cell coverage and provide optimal environmentally appropriate street lighting.

As the survey work is completed, the town will submit the findings to utility providers. The utilities will provide a preliminary design that indicates where all the above ground facilities, such as transformers, switches, terminal boxes, etc. will be located.

Representatives of the town will then work with property owners and confirm to the appropriateness of placements.

This should be completed for the initial phases by fall.

While there may not be much visible progress, 2017 will be occupied with all the necessary work to establish final cost estimates and to initiate construction in 2018.

Looking Ahead: Tourism outlook for Longboat Key OBSERVER STAFF

President of Visit Sarasota County With the expanded hotel rooms and culinary offerings, we expect to see solid tourism numbers for Longboat Key. With a new hotel and restaurants slated to open in 2017, there are more opportunities for visitors to explore Longboat Key. The biggest tourist draw for the Key in 2017 will be the opening of the Zota, Ocean Properties Limited’s newest resort in the area. Scheduled to open in May, the Zota will offer 187 guest rooms and suites and is on the site of the previous Hilton Longboat Key. The beachfront property will also have 2,500 square feet of meeting and banquet space, a restaurant and wine bar that will be open to the public.

The Zota joins the Resort at Longboat Key Club and numerous independent properties welcoming overnight visitors.

The resort will continue to be a

popular location for visitors looking for upscale accommodations and full-service dining, tennis and golf options.

The addition of new restaurants will expand dining options on the key and appeal to visitors and locals alike. On the north end of the Key, Shore’s second restaurant in the area is expected to open in the old Moore’s location.

This past July, Richard Gonzmart, owner of Columbia Restaurant Group, purchased the former Pattigeorge’s with the intent to introduce a new restaurant concept in this location. These new restaurants join long-time popular establishments Euphemia Haye, Dry Dock, Harry’s Continental Kitchens and the Chart House.

These new amenities and offerings, along with the beach and nearby St. Armands Circle and Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, will likely welcome new and returning visitors in 2017.

There will always be potential threats that could affect tourism growth. Hurricanes, green algae and the Zika virus are just a few examples of potential threats we saw in 2016 alone.

One of the bigger

concerns I have with continued success is that I have seen some complacency set in within our industry. If industry complacency continues, we will no doubt struggle during adverse circumstances, while our competitors who are staying engaged in the market will beat us at our own game.

The solution to complacency is to keep creating brand awareness in the market so when a natural disaster or an adverse situation occurs, we will have strong market share.

A source you can trust In this age of 24/7 information addiction and proliferation of fake news, consumers eventually will sort out the news providers they can trust. We intend to be one of them.

T

he American newspaper industry lost one of its giants last week — Walter Mattson, former president and chief operating officer of the New York Times Co. and resident of Plymouth Harbor in Sarasota.

Mattson was the force behind the growth of the New York Times Co., back when the New York Times was regarded in the industry as the gold-standard in credibility. He was also responsible for the Times Co.’s acquisition of newspapers across the country, including the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the Islander on Anna Maria in the early 1980s.

We had our first encounter with Mattson on April Fools’ Day around 2000. Mattson was retired from the NYT and a resident here with his wife. My wife, Lisa, then executive editor of the Longboat Observer, answered her phone. It was Mattson.

He had just read our latest April Fools’ edition. He introduced himself and was polite and gentlemanly.

He told Lisa how he enjoyed reading the Longboat Observer. But he said he was “concerned” — that was the word. He was concerned about our publishing fake news and what that could do to the credibility and readers’ trust of the Longboat Observer.

(Our chairman, by the way, David Beliles, another longtime newspaper publisher and editor, agreed with Mattson.)

We have since continued our April Fools’ tradition for 15 years, with the belief that, once a year, all of us should be able to laugh at ourselves.

But on more than one occasion, Mattson has been right about his concern for our publishing “fake news” — even if it is in the spirit of fun and laughter. As our company has expanded into the Orlando area and the east coast of Florida, we’ve introduced April Fools’ editions to those Observers. We have had some backlash. Last year, an advertiser in Winter Garden pulled its ads and threatened lawsuits.

Fake news has consequences.

And now, thanks to Facebook, Google, Twitter, Instagram, et al, fake

news is proliferating. It’s everywhere.

Year-end national TV and radiotalk shows were teeming with discussions about fake news and mainstream media bias during the presidential election. Unvarnished truth from either side was rare during the campaign.

One of the most notorious fake news incidents recently was when the owner of Comet Ping Pong pizzeria in Washington, D.C., and his employees started receiving menacing, abusive, life-threatening emails and text messages before the presidential election. The cause: Dozens of fake news articles on different websites and Facebook about Hillary Clinton and her aides running a child-trafficking ring in the restaurant’s back rooms.

The fake articles also prompted a man with a gun to visit the pizza shop to investigate for himself.

Likewise, you receive forwarded emails all the time from your friends — seemingly legitimate reports that have been forwarded multiple times, the articles often reporting information that reads to be plausible and true but is also intended to trigger outrage or strong endorsement.

How do you know they are true?

Often times you would have to venture down online rabbit trails for minutes or hours to find the source and the truth. Who has time for or wants to do that?

You read of hackers easily posing on Twitter as Donald Trump or other celebrities. If you spend 10 minutes with our company’s IT development manager talking online security, he would show how easy it is to hack into the cyber world. You would walk away from him essentially convinced you should never buy another item online with your credit card. Or, at least never open an email from a name you don’t recognize. But even then, we have found out, you can’t always trust those emails. Addresses are being hacked into by the hour.

To make the trust issue worse, everyone today is a journalist, or many of the bloggers and other commenters think they are. They’re writing their opinions, sometimes interspersed with facts, sources unknown.

All of this is coming at you so fast you almost want to withdraw. You don’t know whom to trust.

That’s where the Observer and YourObserver.com come in. The pendulum will continue to swing our way.

We have been here before. Today’s onslaught of fake news is not a new worldly phenomenon. Jacob Soll, a historian at Rutgers University,

reported last month in Editor & Publisher, a trade magazine for the newspaper industry, that fake news has been a part of every century and culture around the world ever since Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1439.

In the United States, fake news reached a nadir during the yellow journalism days in the 1800s — the time when sensationalism was truly a marketing tool for the newspaper industry (see box below).

But as physics dictates, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In the 20th century, the journalism pendulum swung away from Hearst and Pulitzer’s fake-news brand of journalism toward accuracy and credibility. Soll reported how American papers hired reporters to cover local beats and local governments, “building a chain of trust between local, state and national reporters and the public … [O]bjective journalism did become a successful business model — and also, until recently, the dominant one.”

This deluge of fake news will run its course. And consumers of news — as they do now — eventually will sort out the believable from the unbelievable. And they will gravitate toward those sources they believe they can trust because of the accuracy and credibility of their information.

There’s an old saying in our business: Our most prized asset is our credibility. We take that to heart at the Observers. And we continue to believe, that in spite of what you hear and read about the future of newspapers, we believe there is a strong future for local newspapers like ours.

There will always be a need and a desire in every community for credible, trusted local news and information. In the communities we serve, we at the Observers intend to be that source — in print and online — and will work every day to win and maintain that trust.

You may not always agree with our opinions on the Opinion page. And sure, we will make mistakes in accuracy (hopefully, rarely). We’re human.

And when we do err, we will fess up and correct our mistakes.

But we will never mislead or report inaccurate information deliberately — with one exception. That will occur only on April Fools’ Day. A couple months before Walter Mattson died, my wife and I chatted with him at Plymouth Harbor.

Lisa recalled that conversation about credibility many years ago. Mattson remembered it. But he also confessed: He had become that edition’s biggest fan.

1800S: GUILDED AGE OF FAKE NEWS From Jacob Soll’s “The Long and Brutal History of Fake News” in the Dec. 16 edition of Editor & Publisher: The New York Sun’s “Great Moon Hoax” of 1835 claimed that there was an alien civilization on the moon, and established the Sun as a leading, profitable newspaper.

In 1844, anti-Catholic newspapers in Philadelphia falsely claimed that Irishmen were stealing bibles from public schools, leading to violent riots and attacks on Catholic churches.

During the Gilded Age, yellow journalism flourished, using fake interviews, false experts and bogus stories to spark sympathy and rage as desired.

Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World published exaggerated crime dramas to sell papers. In the 1890s, plutocrats like William Randolph Hearst and his Morning Journal used exaggeration to help spark the SpanishAmerican War.

GRIEVING PROCESS 7:08 p.m. — 100 North Shore Road Suspicious circumstance: An officer investigating a large group at a beach access found more than 100 people gathered, many of whom appeared to be drunk and agitated, and dozens of illegally parked vehicles. Members of the group told police their friend had died in a boating accident the previous night, and they were grieving, but recognized that there could be an incident with such a large gathering of intoxicated individuals.

After the group left, officers found empty beer bottles and cases left on the beach. Police contacted a nearby municipality to warn the group may be headed their way.

The plan to install roundabouts on U.S. 41 at Fruitville Road and Gulfstream Avenue deserves first prize for lack of foresight and incompetent planning.

With the uncontrolled building of condos and hotels and the upcoming plans for the Quay property and the totally inadequate infrastructure to handle all of this ... if you think you have a problem now, well, “you ain’t seen nothing yet!” Think nightmare!

With the north-south bumper-to-bumper traffic on U.S. 41 at Gulfstream Avenue and at Fruitville Road having the right of way, drivers coming off the bridge will grow old waiting to get on to a roundabout to go north or south on U.S. 41.

Shortening and synchronizing all the lights from 10th Street to Bee Ridge Road would be a far better way to keep traffic flowing in both directions.

Doing nothing to alleviate the miles-long line of cars from Longboat Key, through St. Armands and over the bridge to U.S. 41 is unconscionable. As things stand now, anyone with a date, a meeting or a reservation in Sarasota should plan on leaving the night before.

Installing pedestrian walk and wait lights at intersections around St. Armands would be a great help in keeping traffic moving. How many more studies and talk, talk, talk do we need … or will it take an act of Congress to get something done?

It’s time to get back to class.

The Longboat Key Education Center kicked off its winter session this week with some new classes and workshops.

The ideas for classes and workshops come from the community. Susan Goldfarb, executive director for the education center, said she meets people every day who could be teachers, or people approach her with ideas.

“But for the most part, I stick to what’s happening around here and how it impacts the world and how the world impacts us on beautiful Longboat Key,” she said.

That’s one reason why a new course, Weather Chasing and Storm Chasing, was added to the winter’s lineup. Longboat Key, sooner or later, will be hit by a hurricane.

Other courses offer lessons in technological art, film and the ongoing conflicts in Israel and the Middle East. The winter session runs until Feb. 28.

Here are some of the classes coming this season: Celebrating the New Technological Art will explore the new breed of art that has evolved because of technology. The twosession course will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 and Jan. 12. The class is $40 for member and $45 for nonmembers.

From the Final Solution to New Beginnings to Ongoing Conflict — The Holocaust, Israel and the Middle East is a retrospective from Holocaust survivor Thomas Hecht, founder of the BeginSadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University. The class runs for two sessions, from 11 a.m.

Al Bagot remembered for personality, quick wit

Former New York Times president dies at 84 Walter Mattson died on Dec. 30.

Walter Mattson wasn’t always the president and chief operating officer of The New York Times.

He had to work his way up.

One particular morning, his 12th birthday, Mattson was given an extra bundle of papers to deliver on his route. It was June 6, 1944, and the Allies had invaded Europe hours earlier. Throughout his route, people stopped him to read about D-Day. He was late to school and got in trouble, but he didn’t mind. He made $6.25 that morning.

He later told his family that experience led to his love of the newspaper industry.

Mattson, 84, died on Dec. 30. From working at his uncle’s newspaper to being an assistant production manager at the Boston Herald Traveler, Mattson showed a special interest in newspapers and the printing business throughout much of his life.

“His true-love side of the paper was the production,” Mattson’s wife, Geraldine, said. “He liked everything about getting the paper out.”

Mattson joined The Times in 1960 as an assistant production manager and stayed with the company until his retirement in 1993, the newspaper wrote in its obituary. He served as president

said he enjoyed his bell-ringing duties, which was a testament to his outgoing personality.

“He was one of those really outgoing people,” Jane Bagot said.

“He loved talking to other people and getting to know them.”

Whether he was popping into Castine’s town hall just to say hello or ushering at church, Bagot made friends easily.

“He was a very nice gentleman, and I don’t think anybody that ever met him didn’t like him,” Bagot’s longtime friend Bill Kelly said.

Bagot is survived by his wife, Jane; sons William and Thomas Bagot; stepchildren Lars Rost and Lisa Haugen; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

from 1979 to 1992. In 2001, the Mattsons moved to Longboat Key year-round. During his years at The Times, Mattson worked to modernize the production of the newspaper and its newsroom and ushered in a national edition.

Diane McFarlin, dean of the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, was a colleague of Mattson’s for about 30 years. She said he was a strategic thinker who was instinctive about newsrooms. In the early 1990s, while McFarlin was the executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, which The Times owned at the time, Mattson suggested the HeraldTribune team up with ABC 7.

“His decision-making powers were so impressive, and there was so much confidence in him that people naturally just wanted to follow him,” McFarlin said.

When Mattson wasn’t working, he spent time with his family or cheered for his favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mattson always had a positive outlook on life and made everyone feel special, his daughter Carol Heylmun said.

Mattson is survived by his wife, Geraldine; sister, Norene Hastings; sons Stephen and William; daughter Carol; eight grandchildren; and a great granddaughter.

The Longboat Key resident died Dec. 18 at age 95.

Alfred “Al” Bagot had such a sharp wit that it often caught people off guard.

“He had great comebacks,” said his stepdaughter, Lisa Haugen.

“His sense of humor ... he was just a really sharp guy all the way around.”

Bagot, a retired Army colonel, died Dec. 18. He was 95. Growing up, Bagot hoped to be a surgeon, but in classic fashion, he joked around and said the Army had other plans for him. He served in human intelligence and counterintelligence, and was the first military intelligence adviser to Saudi Arabia. He commanded the 902nd, 149th and 500th Military Intelligence Groups and the Field Activities Command. He retired in 1974.

After moving with his wife, Helen, to Castine, Maine, he served as executive assistant to the superintendent and personnel officer at the Maine Maritime Academy, where he first held the rank of lieutenant commander.

Following a series of promotions, he retired in 1987 at the rank of admiral.

During the winter months, Bagot lived on Longboat Key and was involved with the Kiwanis Club and St. Mary Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, Men’s Guild. Through the Kiwanis Club, Bagot rang the bell for the Salvation Army every year for the Red Kettle Campaign.

Food and fashion will combine stylistically at the sixth annual Taste of the Keys and Fashion Show.

The event, presented by The Longboat Key Garden Club, benefits the club’s scholarship and grant funds. While enjoying bites from 11 local restaurants including The Lazy Lobster and Chart House, attendees can take in a fashion show featuring styles by Tommy Bahama.

This year’s models will be scholarship recipients from the past 10 years. Celebrity bartenders will be former mayors Jim Brown and Jack Duncan, Mayor Terry Gans, Longboat Key Turtle Watch Vice President Cyndi Seamon and storytellers Sam Lastinger and Ron Pentello.

A raffle featuring four vacation opportunities, including a “New Orleans Trip for Foodies,” will be held.

CIRCUS RING OF FAME The Circus Ring of Fame is about to get some new acts.

The annual event recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the arts and culture of the circus. Six new members will make their mark on the ring.

This year’s Circus Ring of Fame inductees are acrobat Reggie Armor; acrobat and dare-devil Dora Foster Rogana; Henry Ringling North, co-owner of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus from 1936 to 1967; The Pedrolas troupe, which included Rudolf Mootz, Gerda Meyer, Willie and Peter Mootz and Beppo Wallenda; Allen Bloom, senior vice president of Ringling and Feld Entertainment from 1967; and Starless Night, a horse that appeared in several circuses, including the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and is seen in the parade scene in the movie “The Greatest Show on Earth.”

Whether you need to refresh your wardrobe or update your furniture, the St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church Women’s Guild Rummage Sale is the one-stop shop for all your needs.

From fine jewelry and clothing to furniture and collectibles, the rummage sale has something for everyone in your house.

The sale kicks off with an early-bird sale on Friday, March 3.

Attendees for that event will have the first chance to buy items, but those going the second day shouldn’t stress. Last year, there were so many items left after the sale, the guild was able to make donations to local charities.

Last year’s event raised about $40,000 that went to local charities.

‘THE TEETH BENEATH: THE WILD WORLD OF GATORS, CROCS AND CAIMANS’ Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s newest exhibit will have some scaly residents. “The Teeth Beneath: The Wild World of Gators, Crocs and Caimans” will bring one alligator and three caiman to the aquarium. The exhibit will teach visitors why wetland and coastal habitats are vital to native species, explain why the conservation of the species is important and continue the aquarium’s education on watersheds.

Face painting, crafts and balloon animals will be available. A butterfly release sponsored by the Longboat Key Garden Club is always a big hit with kids. Last year’s release was in honor of former Mayor Ron Johnson, who died June 27.

LYNCHES ST. PATRICK’S DAY Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the traditional way. Half of the entertainment will be outside the restaurant, so passersby can enjoy the celebration.

Plymouth Harbor reached that goal Dec. 22 when it unveiled Pilgrim Hall, a renovated center for cultural and social events.

The hall, which hadn’t been updated in more than 30 years, has 100 seats, an integrated audio system, enhanced house and electrical lighting and a stage ramp.

The auditorium will be used as a multipurpose room for movie screenings, musical performances and more.
