The World’s Finest, Whitest Sand

hen it comes to white, powdery sand, nothing compares with Siesta Key. In fact, at the Great International Sand Challenge in 1987, the sand at Siesta Key’s Crescent Beach was rated “The World’s Finest, Whitest Sand,”™ beating more than 30 other entrants, including those from the Bahamas and Grand Cayman. Dr. David Aubrey, a beach expert and the director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Coastal Research Center, judged the competition. It’s clean, it’s dazzling white, and it feels like confectioner’s sugar. Why? It’s the quartz. A study of Siesta Key beach sand by Harvard University’s geology department found it

consists of 99% pure quartz grains, ultimately derived from the southern Appalachians. Over millennia, rivers carried the sand grains into the Gulf of Mexico and south along Florida’s coast. Those

quartz grains are fine, without any coral or shell fragments, which results in sand with a soft, flour-like texture. Quartz sand comes from igneous rock, the kind of rock that once was molten. Quartz is a hard substance, graded as seven on a hardness scale of one to 10 (diamonds are rated as 10). Minerals with a hardness grade of seven cannot be scratched with the point of a steel knife. The most common such substance is granite. The fine sand has passed through one or more of what geologists refer to as “eolian cycles.” Those are periods when the sand grains were blown about by the wind. Such cycles tend to smooth the sharp corners of the

quartz grains and result in the somewhat angular grain structure of Crescent Beach sand. Sand is pretty shifty stuff. No beach is static. All sand moves along the coastline because of wind, storms and ocean currents. The shifting dune is a common phenomenon in sandy areas. If the sand is eroding in one place, then it is building up elsewhere. Prevailing winds roll the surface sand from the bottom of the windward side of the dune over the top and down the leeward side. In time, the entire dune may be rolled for miles. No one can calculate how many eons of time have passed since Siesta Key sand first appeared from fragmented rock, but Siesta Key sand is quite old. We know this not only because of the fine grains but also because other components of the original rock, such as feldspar, mica and other minerals, have almost completely disappeared, leaving only the

extremely hard quartz. Siesta Key’s beach has been recognized as the No. 1 beach in the U.S. by one of the world’s top experts, Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) of the National Healthy Beaches Campaign, and qualifies as a Blue Wave Beach by the Clean Beaches Council. The Travel Channel ranks Siesta as one of the nation’s top-10 beaches. So, now you know why Siesta Key sand is ranked tops

in the world. It feels soft and cool to your bare feet — even in the strongest Florida sun — and that means great beach walking. Sculptors love it, too, because it packs down firmly and smoothly, which makes for awesome sand sculptures at the island’s sand-sculpting contests. No wonder so many beachlovers of all ages come to Siesta Key whenever they can. We look forward to seeing you at our beach soon!

Through the years, the Siesta Inn, on what is now called Roberts Point Road, attracted some colorful clients. Artists — professional and amateur — adorned its walls with local scenes, and one opera singer was reputed to have left her grand piano there. Some of the famous boarders included Cecil B. DeMille, Bette Davis, Charlton Heston, Dorothy Lamour, Agnes Moorehead, Cornel Wilde and Betty Hutton. In 1950, the cast of “The Greatest Show on Earth” preferred to retreat to the quiet serenity of the inn on Sarasota Mayor the Key after a hard day of Harry Higel shooting. Sarasota Mayor Harry Higel jumped on the tourist bandwagon and built his Higelhurst Hotel in 1914 at the entrance to Big Pass. Reputed to be the largest and most beautiful hotel on the West Coast of Florida, the Bay Island Hotel, situated on 10 acres, opened its doors in 1912. It featured three stories, 65 rooms and fine food — it was all you could eat for $1. Marjorie Hamilton purchased the Bay Island Hotel in the 1930s. She installed unheard of

A few Siesta Key hotels, such as the Gulf View Inn, were removed in the name of progress, but most of the old inns sooner or later succumbed to fire. Higel stood on the Sarasota shore and watched helplessly as the Higelhurst went up in flames just a short month before the first bridge connecting the Key with the mainland was completed in 1917. The loss cost Higel $20,000. The Bay Island Hotel burned in 1952. The Siesta Inn had its fire in 1922, but the invincible Roberts built it up again in 1923. He claimed the new hotel was not only bigger and better, but was fireproof and hurricane-proof. And he may have been right — it stood until being torn down in 1996.

The Siesta Key Beach Pavilion, designed by architect Tim Siebert, was dedicated in 1960.

Visitor Information Siesta Key Beach Pavilion

Siesta Key is accurately and affectionately known as “Sarasota’s favorite island.” It is an 8-mile-long, crescentshaped barrier island, easily accessible for visitors traveling either north or south. From one end of Siesta Key to the other, one can experience our vibrant island lifestyle. Two drawbridges connect Siesta Key to the mainland. The south bridge, on Stickney Point Road, leads directly to Interstate 75. As one travels east from the Key, Stickney Point Road becomes Clark Road (State Road 72). The north bridge, on Siesta Drive, links the Key to routes leading into downtown Sarasota as well as to the east. Access to both southern and northern corridor areas is convenient from Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41). Both bridges span the Intracoastal Waterway. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic

North Siesta Key drawbridge are stopped during bridge openings, which allow large marine vessels to navigate through the waterway. This also gives travelers a few quiet moments to enjoy the views.

Beach Ambassadors From their tiki hut “embassy” at Siesta Beach, volunteer Beach Ambassadors welcome beach-goers and help them enjoy their “white sand” experience. Beach Ambassadors answer questions, give directions, maps and general information and handle

lost-and-found items. They also help the Siesta Beach maintenance staff maintain the beach. Sponsored by the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, Sarasota County Department of Parks & Recreation and the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau, the program began in December 2004 with 11 volunteers. Now, during the peak visitor season (January through May), more than 40 volunteers work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at the tiki hut. Off-season (June through December) hours are 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Please be a Good Beach Friend Empty soda cans, plastic bottles, food wrappers, discarded suntan lotion tubes, cigarette butts and plastic bags are more than unsightly. They cause harm and injury to seagulls, ocean birds, water life and nesting sea turtles. Sea turtles perceive floating plastic bags as jellyfish, one of their dietary staples. They ingest the bags, choke and die. Seagulls, pelicans, herons and egrets suffer similar fates. One should never feed seagulls or other wildlife at beaches or parks. Housekeeping hints: Please do not use portable grills, hibachis or start campfires on the beach. Public grills are available. For the safety of others, please do not dispose of hot coals around picnic areas. Glass containers are also not allowed on Sarasota County beaches. Beaches are smoke-free. Designated beach-area smoking areas are the public parking lot and the picnic pavilion.

Lifeguard Stations There are four lifeguard stations along Siesta Beach. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Labor Day through Memorial Day; and 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day. For information and beach conditions, call (941) 861-2150.

Siesta Key Beaches  SIESTA KEY. Siesta Key is renowned for its breathtaking

sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous, crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the feet. Among the many awards it has earned are “The Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” TM (The Great International White Sand Challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and the best beach in America (Dr. Beach, 2011). Walking along, or swimming and playing in the Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks. Others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and volleyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convenient concession stands. Shallow water near the shoreline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special-needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something to do at Siesta Beach, and it’s within easy walking distance of the many shops and restaurants in Siesta Village.  CRESCENT BEACH. Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, because it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern

tip of this beach is Point of Rocks — a lovely snorkeling and diving area rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private, private” beach.  TURTLE BEACH. Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience away from the crowds. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, volleyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch, and fishing is permitted in the adjacent Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local nightspots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it

perfect for beachcombers and shell collectors. Many find petrified shark teeth to take home and treasure — especially after a storm.

We want you to have great beach days during your stay on Siesta Key. Following simple beach courtesy and safety tips ensures a pleasant and memorable visit. Sarasota County beaches use a five-flag beach warning system. Flags are visible along the beaches and near lifeguard stations. Please note the flag color and posted information on safety conditions.

Campground Information From sunrise to sunset, there’s nothing quite like the experience of camping on a Florida beach. Turtle Beach Campground, located on Siesta Key, offers one of the few remaining opportunities to park a recreational vehicle or pitch a tent near the Gulf of Mexico and wake up the next morning under the Florida sun. The park features 40 sites for camping, with areas for both RVs and tents. Electricity

Siesta Key Drum Circle The drum circle takes place on Siesta Key Beach about an hour (or two) before sundown, every Sunday. Bring a djembe, drum, cowbell or anything that makes noise, and you are part of the ensemble. Bring good mood, willingness to dance, desire to listen or curiosity to witness the belly dancers, and you are part of the entertained

audience. Everyone is welcome! It is the home of the African, Latin, Caribbean, dance, rock ’n’ roll (you name it) rhythms. No rules, just fun, which is why the Siesta Key Drum Circle has grown to one of the largest in the country.

iesta Key is nestled between the Gulf of Mexico, the Intracoastal Waterway, Sarasota Bay and Roberts Bay. Varying water, temperatures and depths form habitats that nurture an amazing variety of fish species. While on a single fishing trip, you may explore estuaries*, mangroves and reefs. There’s more than one way to

catch a fish on Siesta Key: surf casting, spin or fly fishing, shore fishing, wading in the grass flats and even bridge fishing. Charter and cruise boat fishing with or without a captain or guide is probably the most popular island sport. You can find every type of water craft and all the fishing gear you need on the Key.

fun fact

More than 1,400 native species of plants and animals inhabit Sarasota Bay Estuary, which is a small, subtropical estuary.

Note: An estuary is where river water meets sea water. This creates a system of mixed salt and fresh water and encourages productive fish habitats.
