“There were four people from my church, Braden River United Methodist, who enlisted,” Bock said. “So my students were actually able to have specific names on their letters.”

Bock said she hopes the students receive some replies to make the whole process more personal.

CDD Chairman Rick Romanoff said the district doesn’t monitor NextDoor or put much value on such a survey, but it will consider options. He said the district nearly halved its security budget by changing from a gate attendant to the remote system more than five years ago.

Additionally, district staff members have verified average wait times for visitors is 2 minutes, despite complaints stating otherwise. He also said Envera provides a license-plate recognition software, so visitors who have been through the gate once

before should be automatically allowed entry at future visits.

“We have the right to control access,” he said.

Still, some residents, such as Barcomb, disagree the system is working the way it should. Their guests frequently have trouble getting through the gates and are apologetic when they arrive late to birthday parties, dinners or other events.

CDD staff members are expected to bring back options, with cost estimates at the meeting slated for April 26.

eredith Barcomb doesn’t have trouble getting through her neighborhood’s entrance, but her friends do.

She and other residents of University Place hope the University Place Community Development District will consider alternatives to its existing gate-entry vendor and system when the contract comes up for renewal in May. Barcomb said her babysitter, who comes twice a week or so, has waited in line for more than 15 minutes, at times, just to gain entry, and that’s just one example.

“It’s hit or miss,” Barcomb said of gate services.

At University Place CDD meetings, supervisors have said they believe the current gate-entry system is working well, but admit some residents are lobbying for change.

“The bone of contention circles around visitors,” said CDD Vice Chairman Frank Ingrassia.

The CDD has budgeted $70,600 annually on security services, according to budget documents, for its contract with remote-access security company

Envera Systems. Visitors push a call button and wait for an Envera employee to respond through an intercom system. The visitor provides his name and the address to which he is going before permitted entry through a gate.

The primary issue has been what happens when guests don’t have the required information.

Some residents say their guests are directed to go back through the line and await confirmation as Envera tries to verify their destination, for example. The scenario creates delays.

The contract with Envera expires in May. The board, at the urging of residents, is asking staff members to present alternatives and costs for consideration.

Options could include continuing with Envera, finding an alternative remote-access security company, using a 24/7 gate attendant or finding some combination.

A resident-conducted survey on the online NextDoor forum asked the question: “Would you like the CDD to present you with at least three gate security options and their benefits/costs before April-May 2017? Fifty-six of 399 registered University Place residents responded, with 93% in favor of seeing options.

Resident Bill Longo said he is in favor of options. He misses the personal aspect gate attendants provided, like when he moved into University Place in 2004.

Sound off I-75 widening yields different results for noise abatement in East County.

Tara’s Linde Davis isn’t alone in her woes about noise from Interstate 75.

Fellow residents of The Preserve at Tara have been lobbying for relief for more than a decade.

“We’ve been waiting for this for 14 years,” said Darby Connor, a Preserve homeowner since 2003.

By 2007, the noise levels had gotten so bad that Connor organized a petition to FDOT for a sound wall to provide relief for about 250 homes.

“The state took noise studies and confirmed that the nose levels exceeded the expected normal,” Connor said. “They stated that, however, the state does not put up noise barriers for buffers on existing communities unless it’s widening the highway in those areas.”

Since then, it’s been a waiting game.

Some residents, like Davis, have almost become accustomed to the noise.

Others haven’t.

“You hear trucks go by all day long. It’s terrible, and I’ve been here since 2003 and haven’t gotten used to it yet,” Jerry Guess said. “That tells you something.”

“It’s like someone running a vacuum cleaner all the time,” Kim Strub said.

Homeowners in The Preserve are pleased relief is on the way.

“It’s long overdue,” Guess said of the sound barrier wall. “I would hope it would be helpful. It couldn’t get worse.”

rom Linde Davis’ back porch, a view includes a picture-perfect pond with ducks and alligators. She sees golf carts zooming across the manicured greens of The Preserve Golf Club at Tara.

But at the back of the property, through a thick row of trees, there are flashes of movement, made by vehicles heading southbound on Interstate 75.

Her home is one of the closest to I-75 in The Preserve at Tara, and since she moved there in 2002, the noise from the interstate has steadily grown.

Neither the state nor Tara Preserve’s developer installed a noise barrier, besides the trees meant to block the view of the roadway.

Davis rarely has company outside because it’s too noisy.

“It’s a major problem,” said Davis, who now has her home for sale because she’s wanting to downsize. “It’s definitely hurting the sale of the house.”

Relief is coming.

Residents in The Preserve at Tara learned this month that the community qualifies for a noise barrier when the Florida Department of Transportation improves the intersection of I-75 and State Road 70 and widens I-75 between S.R. 70 and University Parkway.

The news however, is a twosided tale that results in a less favorable outcome for communities east of I-75.

On that side, residents have the same complaint, but a different result.

Since moving to Braden Woods in 1983, Scott Veix has added waterfall features on the back porch of his home, purchased double-paned windows and situated an addition to his home in such a way as to shield his household from the noise.

“You can hear trucks changing gears while lying in bed,” Viex said.

His neighbor Dave Thinel uses an app on his cell phone to track and verify his traffic suspicions. If the roadway is too quiet, he knows there’s an accident somewhere that has vehicles backed up to a near standstill.

What neither can expect is for FDOT to build them a sound wall.

People on both sides of the issue have been talking about the problem, along with solutions, or lack of.

Here is a sampling from those on both sides of the issue.

WHY NOW?

FDOT constructs sound barriers (noise walls) in conjunction with improvement projects. The state has advanced funding for the project at the intersection of State Road 70 and Interstate 75.

The project includes widening I-75 between State Road 70 and University Parkway, so FDOT can evaluate noise levels at neighborhoods that will be affected. Construction for the I-75-S.R. 70 project is expected to start in late 2018.

FEASIBILITY During a project development and environment study for a widening project, FDOT considered noise abatement for all noise-sensitive areas.

Evaluation is multistep process. First, the project must be deemed to potentially change traffic noise levels.

Second, FDOT uses a com-

puter model, the Traffic Noise Model, to determine which areas are impacted by traffic noise and the effectiveness of a noise barrier to reduce noise. This model projects noise levels after construction. Current noise levels are taken at selected areas along the project to validate the computer model.

If a project meets sound and “cost reasonable” requirements, a noise barrier wall will be constructed with the roadway improvements.

The optimum height of a barrier varies related to residences position to the roadway.

THE ‘SHADOW’ ZONE FDOT engineers say sound walls only benefit homes within the first 300 feet or so from the barrier. The area is called the “shadow zone.”

negligible benefits because the noise refracts over the top of the barrier.

WHO QUALIFIES? Noise volumes at impacted residences must be at or exceed 66 decibels.

Barriers must result in a reduction of 7 decibels at at least one site, and a minimum of 5 decibels at at least one additional site.

Additionally, the project must prove “cost reasonable,” with a cost per home of no more than $42,000.

FDOT cannot evaluate noise levels and sound walls for residences that have been permitted for construction after a project’s date of public knowledge. Local governments are responsible for compatible land-use planning, requiring buffers and other options that may help abate noise.

EAST SIDE STALEMATE

Braden Woods residents Dave Veix and Scott Thinel know sound levels exceed the 66 decibel requirement, but that FDOT will not provide a noise abatement wall for the community for two primary reasons.

First, the cost-per-home to build a sound wall exceeds the maximum of $42,000 per household set by FDOT guidelines.

Second, the homes are too far away from the roadway. FDOT engineers say that homes more than 300 feet from a noise barrier, like those in Braden Woods, do not experience noise reductions because the sound refracts over and around the walls.

The men are at a loss of what to do next. They don’t want to move. Thinel has received estimates for new windows and sliding doors with better, more sound-proof replacements, but costs are about $45,000.

“That’s a lot of dough if you want to at least get the inside quiet,” Thinel said.

River Club’s Traecy Brunner also finds the noise to be a problem — so much so that she and her family are considering putting their home up for sale.

“We like to enjoy dinner and barbecue on the porch,” she said. “When it gets so loud, we’d rather go inside. That’s a bummer. When it’s nice weather, you’d much rather be sitting outside and listening to the birds chirp. It gets so loud, it’s hard to have a conversation on your own back porch.

“I love our neighborhood. I love our neighbors,” she said. “But, the noise is so loud, we’re considering buying another house farther east.”

Brunner said it’s not fair for one side of the interstate to get noise abatement and the other not. If the sound wall isn’t cost feasible, then perhaps there could be another solution, such as improved landscape buffering.

FDOT does not offer landscaping as a solution because it has not proven effective. Hundreds of feet of trees and shrubbery would be needed, and the department lacks the right of way. It also cannot prevent development.

Veix said development of the River Club Plaza, home to the new State Road 70 Wal-Mart, resulted in the loss of forest that previously provided some noise buffer for Braden Woods and other communities.

eacher Nicholas Leduc wandered through a maze of desks at Braden River Elementary, pondering whether it was the right moment to start his 26 fourth-graders in their regular 30 minutes of “wonder.”

It is an important part of Leduc’s teaching philosophy, as he allows them independent time to be stimulated by the activity of their own choice.

“We call this free choice ‘rotations,’” said Leduc, whose passion and love of education were rewarded March 8 when he was named Educator of the Year by the Manatee County School District.

“They can build things, code, make origami, do math problems or some students have started drawing their own maps. I am allowing them to specialize in something at a young age, which is important.”

Before he released them to their

time of “wonder,” Leduc told the students to think about what they were going to be doing and envision what they would look like.

He afforded them a few seconds to ponder the next 30 minutes, then released them to go their own direction.

As an educator, Leduc has been allowed to go his own direction at times, and that led to a speech he never anticipated making. He stood in front of a packed house at the district’s Excellence in Education ceremony, and addressed the crowd after he was selected over three of his peers to become Educator of the Year.

“I’m afraid you have the wrong man,” said Leduc, who is 44.

“This is really hard for me because whenever I leave my classroom and walk down the hallway at Braden River Elementary, I see the Mount Rushmore of teachers.”

ceremony, along with their parents, let Leduc know he should be considered among the best at Braden River Elementary. They jumped to their feet, cheered wildly and waved sticks with a photo of Leduc at the top, kind of like a big lollipop.

Leduc’s teaching style is related to the belief he never should

underestimate his students.

“When I saw the students during independent time, when I saw them setting their own goals and achieving them, I realized that they are capable of doing a lot more than we teachers might let them,” he said.

His ability to push his students to the highest level possible has

led to Educator of the Year nominations in the past, but he never has accepted those nominations.

In the past, he was not a fan of competing with other teachers.

However, he decided to accept the nomination this year to honor his mom, Leslie Leduc, who died two years ago.

“My mom was a teacher in Manatee County and she always wanted to be a finalist,” Leduc said. “I have turned the nomination down multiple times, and when my mom found out she got upset. So, I am here because she would want me to do it.”

While Leduc obviously values the past, he doesn’t live in it. He said his teaching style is subject to change, and he loves trying new things.

“It is so easy to get lost in the teaching regimens of today,” Leduc said. “The moment we stop trying to change something, we lose our edge.”

Cora Augustine, a fourth-grader in Leduc’s class, sees a lot of positive qualities in her teacher.

“He gives us the freedom to do stuff, and he makes work fun,” she said. “A lot of other teachers yell, but Mr. Leduc likes to talk it out, pull us to the side without embarrassing us.”

Fourth-grader Eli Askins likes the high energy in Leduc’s class.

“Other teachers made us sit around all day and he lets us move around a lot,” Askins said.

“He also makes learning fun. He makes songs up for us to memorize multiplication and division.”

Leduc throws all the credit back to his students.

“The biggest thing here is that I stay out of the way,” Leduc said.

“They revolve around me, but I let them do their own thing. I’m just the tallest person in the room.”

Courtney Walker, 34, has been an elementary school teacher since she was 21 years old. Before teaching second grade at Bashaw, Walker began her teaching career teaching kindergarten at H.S. Moody Elementary School in Bradenton.

Two years later, she landed her job at Bashaw and has been there ever since. Walker said she has known she wanted to be a teacher since she was just a 5-year-old. “My parents have told me that when I got home from kindergarten, I would tell them that I wanted to be a teacher,” Walker said. “I think that was because I idolized my kindergarten teacher, Pamela Smith. I feel like now, I can confidently say that I am a good teacher, that I am just as good as those teachers that I idolized growing up.”

Josephine Johnson, 50, has been an elementary school teacher since 2004, beginning her teaching career in Tallahassee at Pineview Elementary.

She took on her job at Tara just two years ago and has loved every moment of it. Johnson began teaching for the first time when she was 15 years old and living in the Philippines where she spent her childhood. She started teaching piano to children in her neighborhood. “My weekends were fully booked but that is when I first experienced the joy of teaching,” Johnson said.

“One thing that I learned from teaching is that you never, ever, label a child or a person, or underestimate what they are capable of achieving.”

Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker is set to retire at the end of the year.

Although Commissioner Carole Whitmore motioned for the board to reconsider its decision and instead negotiate with Hunzeker for a year-long extension of his contract, the motion failed.

“I’m of the opinion we need to go forward,” Commissioner Stephen Jonsson said.

A search committee is expected to be selected in early April, paving the way for hiring a new administrator by November.

Former county commissioners, community leaders and business professionals have lobbied the commission to retain Hunzeker.

Hunzeker said he was ready to retire in 2013, when the board asked to extend his contract by five years.

“I’m OK with retiring,” he said.

Nolan staffer demoted after telling one student to harm another

A staff member at R. Dan Nolan Middle School has been demoted after an investigation showed she encouraged a student to harm a peer.

Wende Pendleton-Wicks was working as a student support specialist at Nolan Middle School and was temporarily assigned to the Manatee County School District’s Office of Student Assignment in January during an investigation of the incident.

The investigation showed Pendleton-Wicks exchanged text messages with a former student while her son was in the hospital with a broken arm. A student offered retaliation against the student who injured her son, saying “I’ll pick (him) up and drop him,” and Pendleton-Wicks texted, “Please do.”

In interviews with a district investigator, Pendleton-Wicks said she later advised the student not to take any action and made the comment while emotional.

Pendelton-Wicks has been demoted to a substitute teacher.

efore Sgt. Stephen Chenard of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office talked about the value of the nine police dogs under his supervision, he told a story.

It occurred a little more than two years ago, in a wooded area near the corner of Cortez Road and 75th Street West in Bradenton. Deputy Thomas Franklin was following two suspects with his fellow deputies.

Franklin came upon one of the suspects lying in the grass. That man started to crawl away as the deputies approached. Franklin decided it was time to employ his dog, Quinto, and released him to subdue the man.

Quinto, though, had other ideas. He took a few steps, then took a hard right. Hiding in the brush was the other suspect, who had a revolver. If any of the deputies had taken a few more steps forward, they might not have survived an arrest that eventually was executed with limited resistance.

On March 11 at the Sarasota Polo Club in Lakewood Ranch, Chenard led a demonstration of the K-9 Unit. More than 5,000 polo fans showed up for the regularly scheduled match, so it presented a great opportunity for Chenard and his unit’s dogs to show off.

Three deputies, Mike Gerholdt, Chris Thames and Charles Wolfinger, brought their dogs to educate the crowd. Gerholdt took the field with his dog, Boey, and they performed drills that displayed Boey’s discipline. As Gerholdt moved forward with a pistol in a ready position, Boey

hugged his side and obeyed his every command.

Thames later gave his dog, Echo, the order to help subdue a fleeing suspect, which in this case was Wolfinger, who wore a protective sleeve to absorb Echo’s bite. Wolfinger ran down the middle of the field, and Echo gobbled him up in a few seconds. Criminals beware.

The display, though, wasn’t as dramatic as the stories the deputies told.

“I was serving a warrant on a male for two attempted murders,” Thames said. “On surveillance, I saw him and I parked my car around the corner. When I saw him, I told him to stop, and I initiated my dog (Leo at the time) and he bit him in the wrist as the man was going for the gun in his waistband.

“I’m glad Leo was there, or maybe I wouldn’t be.”

Wolfinger’s former dog, Rex, came up big during the search of a violent suspect who deputies thought had run out of a yard.

While the deputies talked about where the man might have gone, Rex started barking at a kennel inside the yard. Indeed, the suspect was hiding there, and deputies surrounded him quickly and made the arrest.

“It’s amazing how perceptive they can be,” Wolfinger said.

All nine members of the K-9 Unit could tell stories about how their dogs might have stopped a situation from becoming violent.

However, they are valuable on other fronts as well.

“Think of the money our taxpayers save in the evidence we find, and the seizures,” Thames said.

The nine dogs in the regular K-9 Unit are used to track and engage criminals. Seven of those are skill in the detection of narcotics, and the other two are “bomb dogs.”

In 2016, the nine dogs were vital in the apprehension of 224 criminals.

might have been caught later, but we were able to apprehend them quickly and that also allows us to gather more evidence.”

The dogs must perform because Chenard said it costs about $100,000 the first year a dog goes into service. That includes intensive training and an extensive bonding period with their future handlers. New handlers must have a 480-hour training block.

“All our handlers live 24/7 with their dogs,” Chenard said. “More than anything, I’ve learned these dogs are very intelligent. You learn to trust your dog. We’ve had witnesses say the suspect went south and your dog goes north.

I’ve gone south before. Now I trust my dog.”

Three years after Chenard crossed over to the K-9 Unit, he said he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Every day is incredible,” he said. “That bond becomes similar to one of your children. We’ve been through a lot together.”

How strong of a bond is it?

Wolfinger said he would have trouble going back to a human partner.

“My dog is happy to see me every day,” said Wolfinger, who has been with the K-9 Unit for 7 1/2 years. “And he always does what I ask without question.”

Community should go ga-ga for this Scout

Boy Scouts if you hope to earn a scholarship in basketball or track and field?

“It builds great character in young people,” he said. “The experiences I have had will last a lifetime.”

OK, nice audition for being a potential scouting poster boy, but isn’t it time to hang up the signal flags?

Den Boggende admits he will back off his scouting responsibilities while he increases his athletic training. Then again, there is that scouting trip this summer that begins in Minnesota and crosses into Canada by canoe. Other than his fellow Scouts and a real scout, there are no human beings or ga-ga pits along the way.

No doubt den Boggende holds the camping part of scouting close to his heart, especially when you listen to his description of what he has learned from scouting.

“It teaches you life skills,” he said. “Cooking, cleaning, setting up tents.”

Sounds like the essentials to me.

He was quick to note that his time in Boy Scouts wasn’t all about raccoons and hikes.

In February, he went with his troop to the Kennedy Space Center, meeting an astronaut and watching a rocket launch.

It was at the YMCA that den Boggende started playing ga-ga at a young age. He loved the game and thought such a project would allow other children to enjoy something he held dear.

After seeing the pit, though, it was obvious we weren’t going to talk ga-ga strategy for the next hour.

For someone who has lived a little, like myself, it’s a joy to visit with a 14-year-old who defies the notion that “they don’t make them like they used to.” Any-

one who wants to blanket label today’s youth as lazy and unfocused isn’t paying attention.

Sure, den Boggende appears to be the cream of the crop. But I’m sure he will have lots of competition as he fights his way through high school, college and eventually the job market.

Besides ascending to Eagle Scout, den Boggende plays basketball for Lakewood Ranch’s junior varsity basketball team and is a track and field athlete.

Alison beamed with pride as her son conversed, quite comfortably, with somebody four times his age. She loves his drive to become an Eagle Scout, and she knows the sky is the limit from here.

“You know,” Alison noted, “there is a solid link between scouting and astronauts. When they landed on the moon, you know, ‘The Eagle has landed.’”

For the record, Neil Armstrong was talking about the Lunar Module named “Eagle” and was not referring to the fact he was an Eagle Scout.

Even so, her point was welltaken. Andrew is ready to blast off into his promising future, and he seems quite capable of reaching for the stars.

t was a wide-ranging conversation at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA, covering ga-ga pits, exploring canoe trips to Canada and then evolving to a discussion about the first moon landing.

That’s what happens when you give a soon-to-be Eagle Scout a little space.

Lakewood Ranch’s Andrew den Boggende is the Boy Scout, who will reach the coveted Eagle rank probably in May or June when he finishes a review process to make sure he is worthy.

He finished his requirements by leading a project to build the aforementioned ga-ga pit for the YMCA. For those of you, like me, who have never played the game of ga-ga, think of it as dodgeball in a tiny corral. The corral part was built by den Boggende and a group of volunteers from Troop 89 out of the Christ Presbyterian Church on Upper Manatee Road. A tip of the hat goes to den Boggende’s grandfather, Francis Suppe, who designed the whole thing.

The sections of the ga-ga pit, six in all, are 8 feet long and 3 feet high. The six sections bolt together in a hexagon. It’s easy to assemble the device together in about 10 minutes.

As a Christmas present, Gilbert W. McNeal Elementary fourthgrader Rebecca Thomas received a “Tinker Crate,” meant to thrill an aspiring scientist.

A Tinker Crate includes a blueprint with detailed step-by-step instructions for science projects.

It also includes a “Tinker Zone” booklet with ideas for science experiments and activities.

“I like learning about forces and how things move, so I like to watch things,” said Thomas, who is 10. “I am really into making stuff. One time, we made our own bubbles.

All you have to do is take a water bottle, cut it in half, put a sock on it, blow it from the cap part of the water bottle and the fabric from the sock creates bubbles.”

On March 8, McNeal Elementary School hosted its annual STEAM Night to inspire students like Thomas. More than 300 students, parents and staff members gathered to enjoy science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics-based activities.

The event was heaven for Thomas and others.

McNeal engineering teacher Denise Touchberry was thrilled with the program’s success.

“Last year was the first year (for STEAM Night) and we were kind of just showing off and showcasing clay animation,” Touchberry said. “We experienced a huge enhancement from the first to the second year. We did not have food last year, and we had food this year and STEAM Night was a lot bigger this year. Maybe we could add some more local organizations for next year’s event, like the Florida

Additionally, this year’s STEAM Night started a little bit earlier for the students with two separate “Kaboom” assemblies that took place during their school day.

The Orlando Science Center showed the kids how much fun science can be, which Touchberry believes is critical, seeing that a common misconception about science is that it’s too difficult to understand.

“With engineering and other

science fields, you have to be able to fail and fail many times over, then you have to be able to persevere,” Touchberry said.

The students watched as the Orlando Science Center created small explosions, bursts of light and dry ice surprises. The students were able to try their own small experiments, such as setting off small explosions inside a bottle.

Thomas already knew how much fun science can be.

Her father, Rob Thomas, has always known his daughter was

special when it came to science and math.

“She is one of those kids who has gotten it since she was a 3-year-old,” Rob Thomas said.

“Her teachers told us she was gifted and smart, and she is. She is just wicked smart. I have to work hard, but it all comes so naturally to her.”

STEAM Night featured 15 “centers” open in the cafeteria for students to explore.

“It was so well-rounded because we had a little bit of everything,” Touchberry said.

Town house project nears construction phase Hidden Creek will offer 46 luxury town houses.

Lakewood Ranch’s Jeff Hirschberger has the signs and shovels ready for Hidden Creek.

Within a month, he hopes to be under construction and marketing his new 46-home luxury town house project at the southwest corner of 77th Terrace East and Town Center Parkway in Bradenton, just to the west of Lakewood Ranch.

“It’s going to be a gated community with amenities, zero maintenance,” Hirschberger said of Hidden Creek. “We’re going to build a beautiful little community here.”

Hirschberger, who has been in the development business for more than 40 years, envisions 2,156- to 2,800-square-foot, three-bedroom units priced from the high $300,000s to more than $500,000. The homes will have high-end finishes, such as granite countertops. The living area will be on the first level with bedrooms above, and the designs accommodate either a chair lift or elevator for buyers who wish, at some time, to avoid using stairs.

Monthly fees, which include maintenance, insurance, water, sewer and amenities, would be about $450.

“It’s nice to see some development or some progress taking place,” said Kevin Rubin, an investor who owns one of the four office buildings with a business partner and is the president of the office park’s condominium association. “It’s good for everybody. It’s cross pollination of our business.”

Hirschberger’s focus, though, will be the development of his own project.

Since plans for the project were approved March 2, he’s focusing on his next move — purchasing the property from Colonial Realty Limited Partnership in early April and beginning construction shortly thereafter.

Hirschberger said he expects to have homes available for sale in late fall.

The best moment for Angela Massaro-Fain at the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund Gala on March 18 will involve tears.

Angela and her husband, John Fain, will be honored with the 2017 C. John A. Clarke Humanitarian of the Year Award. The couple, co-owners of Grapevine Communications, will stand in front of the crowd at Lakewood Ranch Country Club, receive their award and applause and then walk to the side.

Angela will look at John and say the phrase that has driven them to be exceptional philanthropists.

“Mom would be proud.”

The passion, in the form of tears, will then flow as Angela thinks about her late mother, Mary Frances Massaro, who passed along to her daughter a sense of altruism during her daughter’s early years growing up in New Jersey.

Over their time in Lakewood Ranch, John and Angela have given their community close to $2 million in cash and services.

They often have left an event with Angela delivering the “Mom would be proud,” phrase.

“She says that all the time,” said John, who married Angela in 2000 and combined with her in 2002 to revive Grapevine Communications, which Angela originally

founded in 1988 in Montreal and sold in 1998 (retaining the rights to the name). They built their business into one of the largest

“When we decided to start Grapevine, we made the conscious decision if we were going

to be in the community, it was important for us to be part of the community,” John said. “We saw what this community was, and that was a springboard to it.”

The Lakewood Ranch Community Fund board cited their longstanding history of community involvement as the catalyst for earning its top humanitarian award. John said he is starting to wind down after spending nine years on the Asolo Repertory Theatre board along with being a board member for We Care Manatee, and others. Although he spends about 30 hours a week at Grapevine, he said, officially speaking, he is retired.

John and Angela, who live in Central Park, continue to run the Massaro Kozak Art Scholarship Fund, which was established in 2014 to honor Out-of-Door Academy art teacher Paula Kozak, who was battling cancer and died in 2015. Kozak inspired their daughter, Maria-Francesca Massaro, now 21, to pursue a career in art.

The scholarship is presented to students of ODA and St. Stephens Episcopal School in Bradenton who “embody the creative spirit of our youth in their pursuit of a four-year degree in arts and/or communications.”

A glimpse into the John and Angela’s personal life gives insight at what makes them to successful as philanthropists.

“I am as much a Type A personality as Angela,” John said. “But it comes in different forms. It takes me a lot longer to get (angry).

Angela talks to everyone without the intercom. She is a wild, crazy, gorgeous, adventurous Jersey girl.

Well, not wild, make that outgoing. I am from Louisville, and I am more understated. I am English, and part Cherokee. I am more of a Southerner and my great, great

Angela illustrated his point with a story from about 10 years ago when they were in Las Vegas shopping at an art gallery.

by American contemporary artist Henry Asencio. She loves to surprise John, so he talked to the store employee about taking her

credit card and billing her so John wouldn’t see the transaction.

John, meanwhile, found a Tuan Nguyen sculpture she had looked at previously. He told it was too expensive, but once she moved to the other side of the store, he pulled out his credit card and asked the clerk to quietly do the transaction.

Back at home, they had hidden each other’s gifts until their anniversary, where Angela carried in the painting and John hauled in the crate with the sculpture. They realized then they both had the same idea, and they laughed.

It’s a passion for life and love that carries into their love of Lakewood Ranch.

“I’m very proud because this is our home,” John said. “Lakewood Ranch is as much of a city as Sara-

Through that love and pride, they do what they can to make life better in their community.

They encourage their employees to be active in the community and to have a sense of giving back.

It’s a big part of their hiring process to make sure the prospective employee is going to be involved.

They hope Maria-Francesca inherits their giving spirit.

“We want to pass a legacy to our daughter,” John said. “I think she recognizes the value of being involved.”

Someday, in the not too distant future, Maria-Francesca might be leaving a fundraising event that she organized. The phrase will continue.

The man in the driver’s seat was asleep. The deputy saw a pipe that appeared to have marijuana in it. The deputy woke up the man and asked why he was there. The man told the deputy he was there to smoke marijuana and noted he had a small baggie of marijuana on the passenger side floor. Since the man was honest, the deputy took the pipe and marijuana and issued the man a warning. The man locked his car and walked home due to the fact he recently smoked pot.

A spokeswoman for the group said the man has been harassing neighbors, not the other way around, and said the residents are scared of the man. The residents wanted the information documented.

magine, if you will, driving just more than 100 miles from Lakewood Ranch to Kissimmee. The concentration during that drive takes somewhat of a toll.

Now imagine running that same distance.

That’s exactly what Lakewood Ranch resident Matt Bertrand did on Feb. 25. Bertrand, a sergeant with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, was part of the inaugural Dunes 100, an ultramarathon that started and finished at Jupiter’s Jonathan Dickinson Park. He finished in 21 hours, 40 minutes and 55 seconds.

Yes, those numbers are correct.

Bertrand said the most common question he gets about the race is simply, “Why?” Not much of an athlete growing up in the United Kingdom, Bertrand started out slow in the running community, doing it as a way to keep in shape. His first race was in 2005, a simple 5K on Siesta Beach and from there, he upped his dose of running to a 10K, and kept steadily adding mileage until he finished his first (and only) 50-mile race in 2015.

Eventually, Bertrand set a goal for himself to complete a 100mile race by the time he turned 40. He is 39 now, with an October birthday. The time had come for Bertrand to achieve what he set out to do, even though his wife, Harmony Bertrand, said he dragged his feet signing up for the race, continually putting it off before one day making the commitment.

“Anyone can do it, I really believe it,” Bertrand said. “The running community, and particularly the ultra-running community, is so accepting. They just want you to succeed.

“It’s a different ballgame than faster racing, and I think that’s what draws me.”

Bertrand successfully proved his own hypothesis by completing the Dunes 100 and, in fact, loved the experience. Before the race, he researched tips and tricks on the internet and figured out that it would be best to think of the race in tiny sections.

The course was 25.286 miles long, to be completed four times.

There were six aid stations along the course, so focusing on going from station to station made the challenge slightly less daunting.

Not to say that there weren’t challenges. Around the 75-mile mark, Bertrand started to feel mental fatigue. Another full time around the course would not be easy, especially in the dark with no visual stimulation.

“I wish my car was here,” Bertrand remembers thinking to himself.

Despite the lack of a vehicle, Bertrand found an extra gear, and did not quit.

Eating helped him get through the tough spots. Bertrand is a vegan, so he packed himself eight peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to eat throughout the race as to not rely on the food provided by the aid stations. He did enjoy their chips, salted potatoes and soda, though, which he said was a nice treat since he tries to cut snacks of that ilk out of his normal diet.

Early in the race, around mile 25, Bertrand started chatting with

another runner, Eddy Souza. The two hit it off, and decided to run with each other while talking about their lives and families.

After keeping up a solid pace, Bertrand and Souza found themselves all alone at the front of the pack. They decided to complete the rest of the journey together and cross the finish line at the same time. This was no small decision: There was money on the line. First place was awarded $1,000, and second place $500.

They split the money, each taking home $750, plus a new friend.

“Complete elation and pride,” Bertrand said, on what he felt immediately after finishing the race.

Harmony Bertrand described her husband as “the sweetest, funniest, sincere person” and was not at all surprised that he made a friend during the race.

She was following his progress through an app on her Apple Watch, and getting text updates from their two daughters, Michelle and Libby.

Communication was sparse between husband and wife on the day of the race, for Harmony Bertrand was busy at work. (She’s a sales rep at Macy’s.) The race, which began at 6 a.m., ended in the middle of the night, so Matt Bertrand stayed at a hotel in Jupiter and went home in the morning.

Still feeling the effects of the race, Bertrand tossed and turned in his sleep for two consecutive nights before returning to a normal sleep schedule.

So what can possibly be next after a 100-miler? Bertrand said he wants to do another one. But he might not be ready just yet.

Three times the fun at Nathan Benderson Park

D

riving south on Cattlemen Road toward Nathan Benderson Park on Sunday, I noticed the right lane was marked by cones.

I thought it might be the result of construction until I inched closer to the park and saw cyclists whizzing past, handling the sharp turn into the parking lot with ease.

The fifth-annual SarasotaBradenton International Triathlon Union race was here.

The sprint triathlon (750-meter swim, 20K bike ride and 5K run) attracts people from across the state and around the world. The most amazing thing about the event, to me, was twofold: The sheer amount of people (more than 500) participating, and the camaraderie shown by the triathletes toward each other.

They were competing, but I witnessed too many instances of an athlete clapping and encouraging other participants to count.

I arrived with the goal of gathering some prime stories of either the entertaining or inspiring kind. Runners, and by extension, triathletes, tend to have some doozies.

Luckily, I found both.

Christie Kolstedt, 33, of Ocoee, finished in 1:07:43, which was the fastest of every female race participant except for the “College Girls” division (her time would have been good for seventh out of 23 participants in that group).

She was looking to confirm that fact on the scoreboard when I caught up with her, but the results had not yet been posted.

Kolstedt made the two-hour westward drive to prepare for the ITU World Cup, which will be hosted by Benderson Park in October.

She’s only been doing triathlons for four seasons, but she has learned a lot during that time, like what to drink. She used to only drink water before a bad experience at a triathlon in Haines City, when she took an energy gel with nothing to offset

its effects. Let’s just say it affected her stomach adversely and forced her to make unplanned stops every few minutes.

Now, she sticks to drinking TriFuel products during races.

I’m no expert, but it seems like cutting out restroom stops is a good decision.

After speaking with Kolstedt, I spotted a man rocking an Ironman hat staring at the results page and looking happy. He had reason to be: The man, Mariano Martinez, finished in 1:10, and was first in his age group (4044).

The time would have been good for first place in the competitive 25-29 age group, too.

Martinez and his wife, Laura Brescia, moved to Bradenton from Argentina two months ago.

Martinez’s English is not strong, so Brescia acted as our liaison.

She said the couple had once previously tried to compete in a Florida triathlon, in June 2012, and it had been washed out by Tropical Storm Debby. Through Brescia, Martinez told me that he really enjoyed the course at Benderson Park, and that the organization was top-notch,

much different than in Argentina. He was especially thrilled that there were people instructing him where to go.

I thought that was kind of a bare-bones aspect of triathlon organization, but I guess not.

Martinez then mentioned perhaps the biggest challenge he had to go through this weekend.

For the cycling section, which was already his weakest point, he had to use his personal mountain bike. He sold his old racing bike in Argentina and has not had a chance to buy one here in America.

That may not sound like a big deal, but in a sport where timing is everything, using a noncompetition bike is tough stuff.

Despite the handicap, Martinez finished the cycling section in 32:43.

You don’t need to be a triathlete nut to get enjoyment out of watching fit athletes give the course everything they’ve got.

At the very least, you can learn a thing or two to add to your routine, and hear some amusing stories of embarrassment and triumph, just like I did.

Last year, when we got our 4x400 relay team to states. It was a really close race. We were not expecting to make it, and we made it somehow.

My cross-county coach (Bryan Thomas) said “Even if you are not the most talented, anything you can bring to help the team, whether it be personality or work ethic, anything, that cannot be taken for granted.”

Starting out in cross-country, I definitely was not the best, and I stuck with it mostly for the social aspect. I guess that (quote) kind of drove me.

ntertainer Cahal Dunne had everyone in the crowd signing “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” whether or not they really were Irish.

It was the theme of the day as the Irish Celtic Festival reintroduced visitors to all things Irish on March 11 at the Greenbrook Adventure Park.

Besides the special events, such as the Lucky Dog Parade and the Irish Spirits Relay Race, the enthusiastic crowd scooped up plenty of traditional Irish food and drink.

Pomerville and Straight were just two of hundreds of people who turned out for the annual event, which featured puppies for adoption, a dance demonstration, food, drink and a polo match.

Author turns page into nonfiction

Infamous Manatee County murder leads author into complex writing project.

After years of gathering court documents, conducting interviews and doing research on murderer Delmer Smith III, Lakewood Ranch author Gordon Kuhn remains awake at night, working on his second book about Smith, “Nightmare in Terra Ceia.”

In 2011, Kuhn started a project he thought would lead to a short story about Smith and his crimes in the Sarasota and Manatee counties area. Nothing was short, however, about the project.

Because of the sensitivity of the subject matter, Kuhn studies each word he writes, trying to make sure it is an exact representation of what occurred.

“I spend most of my nights sleeping in my chair in the office because I am trying to think about how to work my sentences, how to be clear,” Kuhn said. “I will be studying a paragraph, or even a sentence, and I’ll fall asleep. I will wake back up after 15 to 20 minutes and start working again.”

Kuhn published a fiction book, “The Pelman Murders,” in 2010.

Some of his avid readers, who live in the area, suggested he write a nonfiction account of the pain and

suffering inflicted by Smith, who was sentenced to death in 2013 for the murder of Kathleen Briles at her Terra Ceia home in Manatee County on Aug. 9, 2009. Smith also was convicted of kidnapping and a home invasion robbery in Sarasota earlier in 2009.

Kuhn agreed, and eventually had his first nonfiction book “Predator: Do You Know How to Fly?” published last year on Sept.

11. Now he is working on a second book — “Nightmare in Terra Ceia” — that has yet to be published.

“It exploded into something that took me two years to write,” Kuhn said of his first book about Smith. “Then I thought I would be done with the second book in

six months, but because of all the interviews I had to conduct and the documents that I had accumulated, it has taken a lot more time.”

His second book focuses primarily on Briles’ murder and all the people affected by the crime, such as her family and friends and the law enforcement officers who investigated the case.

It has been a difficult book to write as Kuhn often thinks about Dr. James Briles, who came home

for dinner to find his wife dead after being beaten with an antique sewing machine.

“He has to carry this for the rest of his life,” Kuhn said of James Briles. “He had no control over what somebody else does.”

Kuhn thinks a lot about Kathleen Briles’ sister, Diane Brinker, who went hunting for her sister’s killer because she thought it was someone local. Brinker was ordered by the police to stop looking for her own protection.

“Kathleen Briles was one of nine sisters and two brothers,” Kuhn said. “I know that they have suffered, they still suffer, and they will continue to suffer for the rest of their lives.”

He thinks about Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Detective Ned Foy, who was a lead investigator in the case. “You can’t walk away from something like this clean,” Kuhn said. “It becomes part of you.”

Foy, a Palm Aire resident and a 40-year veteran of law enforcement, said Kuhn did an excellent job with the first book. He said he is looking forward to reading the second.

“His book was excellent, accurate and it doesn’t fluff things,” said Foy, who said Smith was one of the most violent criminals he has encountered during his career. “I ended up reading the whole thing in two days.”

Eventually, Kuhn will return to his other writing styles. He calls himself a poet who enjoys the freedom of letting his mind roam.

“Writing gives me focus,” Kuhn said. “I need quiet, so lots of times I just drop into my writing. It is my sanctuary and my safe place.

I love the creative part of it.”

Elaine Vaughn’s husband, Joe Vaughn, has experienced an unexpected benefit to his wife’s artist endeavors.

Ever since Elaine Vaughn began designing jewelry eight years ago, her husband does less shopping.

“My husband eventually told me that he will not be buying me jewelry anymore,” she said with a laugh. “He knows that I won’t wear his jewelry.”

She now prefers to wear jewelry designed and created with her own hands.

On March 18, Vaughn and 19 other local artists will showcase their crafts at the Creative Arts Association of Lakewood Ranch Spring Art Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall. A variety of art will be for sale including items such as jewelry, pottery, ceramic, wood turning, lamps and mixed media.

The Creative Arts Association of Lakewood Ranch hosts an annual fall art show, but this will be its first spring show. Admission is free.

This will be Vaughn’s fifth year showcasing her jewelry, and she always looks forward to it.

Becoming a jewelry designer was never about the money for Vaughn. She simply wanted to find a creative outlet.

Now she has a room of her home filled with finished and unfinished earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

“It is something I would rather do than just sitting around watching TV,” Vaughn said.

She has become somewhat of a perfectionist with her jewelry.

“Last time I made a piece of jewelry I ended up taking the entire thing apart because I didn’t like the way it was done,” Vaughn said. “I knew that I would never wear it, therefore, I did not want to sell it. I only make things that I like.”

It was almost her turn to play and she was having mild misgivings.

“I can’t believe that I am here,” McAllister said with a smile. “I had to Google it to figure it all out.”

Lakewood Ranch High’s Student Government Association organized its seventh annual Dodgeball Tournament as a fundraiser for Hope Family Services, a nonprofit organization providing services to victims of domestic violence.
