Lakewood Ranch’s Lori Walker

Garden goodness Lakewood Ranch Garden Club President Lori Walker has led her club’s effort to nurture a community garden at Greenbrook Adventure Park. The group’s efforts have paid off. The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs awarded the “Community Gardens Award” to the club for growing produce and donating it to the community. The produce grown in the club’s plot goes to Stillpoint House of Prayer, which provides food to people in need, among other services.

When the Lakewood Ranch YMCA dissolved its USA Swimming-affiliated Blackfins swim team in April 2016, Manatee County soon launched discussions to convert its nearest pool, at John Marble Park, into a yearround swim facility. Those plans have been realized and more improvements are coming. However, East County youth soon may be able to swim closer to home. A new aquatics center in Lakewood Ranch may be next, thanks to a proposal by Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch. On June 12, SMR’s President and CEO Rex Jensen proposed donating the underlying 126.9 acres of Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch to Manatee County and include an additional 36-acre piece reserved for a future aquatics complex. New on the block Paul Tassler, who was hired in November to be the communications director at Harvest United Methodist Church, can finally communicate in person. Tassler had been working remotely, but he arrived in the area March 28 after moving from his home in Missouri. “The sun here is marvelous. We are so thrilled to be here,” Tassler said. “Harvest is an awesome fit and a wonderful church with a community that welcomes everyone.”

Contractors have used this temporary bridge to complete the underside of the Fort Hamer Bridge. The project is 80% complete and a ribbon cutting for the span is scheduled for Aug. 26.
