Educator’s pitch Braden River Elementary teacher Nicholas Leduc, shown with Rays’ star Evan Longoria, had the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a Rays’ game May 20 after he won Educator of the Year honors in Manatee County. “I practiced all week to hit the catcher, but 15 minutes before I felt my muscles tense up. I am glad I missed because now I have a good story to tell.”

Star speech Fourth-grader Alexis Eikelmann was shocked when she won the Gilbert W. McNeal Elementary School’s public speaking competition with her “Bringing Up Down Syndrome” presentation. So imagine how she felt when she won the 4-H/ Tropicana Public Speaking Contest on May 20 against other district winners. “I am especially glad that I could talk about Down syndrome and the Buddy Walk with my school and community,” she said.
