Volunteer of Year GreyHawk Landing’s Heather Lemke was named the B.D. Gullett Elementary School “Volunteer of the Year” on May 19 during the annual Volunteer Breakfast and given the award by Principal Shirin Gibson. Lemke’s son, Sebastian, is a second-grade student at the school. “Gullett is a great place to volunteer,” Lemke said. “The teachers and staff appreciate it so much, and the energy in a young learning environment is refreshing. I absolutely love the time I get to spend there and the people I get to work with.”

A reluctant hero and a fighter pilot serve as Tribute to Heroes Parade grand marshals. JAY HEATER MANAGING EDITOR
When it comes to the Tribute to Heroes Parade in Lakewood Ranch, one of the co-grand marshals, Braden Woods’ Frank Royer, had it all wrong. “I’m not a hero,” Royer insisted. “I’m just a veteran. There are guys during my period who have done a lot more than I did.” Royer then pointed out Hank Lackey, his co-grand marshal and a career Air Force fighter pilot, was more deserving. “I admire the guy,” Royer said of Lackey. “He was a career military guy and a pilot.” Even so, according to his fellow Veterans of Foreign War members, Royer’s service deserves attention as well. Graduate has priorities When Braden River High graduate and commencement speaker Jaylen Gonzalez took the podium May 18, he touched on important subjects, such as the fact he considers himself a poet. But before he launched into his speech, he had to clear his most important task. “By the way,” he said. “Hi Mom. I love you.”
