K

eith Pandeloglou, the owner of Cowork on Lakewood Main Street, now can be identified in a different way.

He took over this month as the director of Lakewood Ranch Community Activities when previous director Kyanne Merrill stepped down.

It was a surprising move considering Pandeloglou has Cowork offices in Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota dedicated to providing tools and support for

the entrepreneurial community. A gifted businessman, he has created nine of his own startup businesses.

Although he will keep his Cowork businesses, now he will concentrate on running Community Activities’ 10 major events and more than 50 social clubs.

Pandeloglou, who is single, sat down with the East County Observer to discuss his new job and what the future holds for Lakewood Ranch Community Activities.

You have been successful in many areas. Why this job?

What I found is that the Community Activities’ and Cowork’s missions were the same. The mission of Community Activities is to foster a sense of community and friendships. Part of that is the 50 social clubs we do.

Now that you have the job, how do you think Community Activities is doing?

A good portion excites me when I look at our events. Kyanne is staying for a month to help, so it should be a seamless transition.

It’s been great. Every day I write down three highlights.

Why Lakewood Ranch?

I’ve been here seven years and this is a community that pulls together when there is an opportunity for anyone. I love the power of our community. I like to consider myself Mr. Lakewood Ranch.

Do you want to add more events?

More is not always better. Where we are at is probably just right for now. The things we put on need to be world class. But there always is an opportunity for growth. We just need to make sure we engage the community.

What sparked you to consider the job?

I’ve been volunteering since September (when Community Activities moved into Cowork to rent space). I love Lakewood Ranch and part of my goal is for it to be the No. 1 community. It’s like No. 4 now (as the best-selling, master-planned community in the United States by RCLCO).

I hope to take what Community Activities has done and enhance it. So if I can be a small part of Lakewood Ranch being No. 1, that’s great.

When you were offered the job, was it a tough decision?

This is gratifying in a way corporate America never would be. I did a lot of introspection on myself. This is what I enjoy doing. I am a connector, a networker. I always have been hands on and I like being out in the community. This is a natural extension of my personality.

What will be the toughest part of the learning curve?

I will need to be brushing up on not-for-profit governance, but I have been on the boards of six nonprofits. Now we also will be getting into the budget.

Do you have a favorite among the major events?

It’s like anyone’s kids, you love them all equally. But when Santa came in during Holidays Around the Ranch, that was really cool.

You look at the kids and you don’t wonder why you do what you do. That was a fulfilling day.

People might wonder if this is just a temporary job for you. Is this a job you want to do a long time?

Absolutely. I am going to do this as long as they will have me.

Waterline Road home becomes a model of compassion and love.

L

ife for East County’s Callie Parker was going to plan.

Together with her husband, Bob, they were building a new home on Waterline Road themselves, and living out of a trailer on the property while they were completing the job.

Then everything literally came to a crashing halt.

Driving north along Rye Road, just north of 15th Drive East, on the evening of Feb. 21, Parker’s Toyota Avalon and an Acura MDX driven by Bradenton’s Lauren Schwartz were involved in a head-on collision, the driver’s side fronts of both cars coming into contact and causing both cars to spin.

Parker, who was returning home after picking up groceries, was the more seriously injured and was transported to Blake Medical Center with a broken hip.

A Florida Highway Patrol report said neither driver was being cited due to lack of evidence, and neither driver was under suspicion for driving while impaired or distracted.

Bob Parker was at home, coordinating installation of their kitchen counters when his wife’s father, Ron Jones, told him Callie was in an accident. Ron and Ruthie Jones live next door.

“My heart fell to the floor,” Bob Parker said. “I was so scared. We jumped in my truck and drove down Waterline Road, where we saw the lights from the police.”

Bob Parker stopped on the shoulder and ran to his wife, who was covered in glass. She was in pain and unable to move her legs.

She was taken by helicopter to Blake Medical Center.

“It did not feel good at all,” Callie Parker said March 6 from her hospital bed. “It was pretty awful ,actually.”

Since then, Callie Parker has been working her way through a painful recovery. After being stabilized, she was transferred to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she is expected to remain for a least another week.

Her neighbors and friends, meanwhile, have come to the aid of her family.

On the morning of March 4, about a dozen people were scurrying around the Parkers’ future home, determined to finish Bob’s and Callie’s project.

“It’s overwhelming love,” Callie Parker said. “It’s hard to process.

I know we love a lot of people and a lot of people love us.”

They cut trim, painted walls and cleaned base boards in the hope they can finish the home before Callie’s release from the hospital.

They said they wanted her first night to be spent in a house, and not the camper behind it.

“Our ultimate goal is to finish it and make it feel like home, so when she comes home, everyone can focus on healing and getting better,” said friend Amanda Chandler. “Callie has a huge heart. Her joy is so infectious when people see a need for a person like that, they want to help.”

of the crash. They’ve lived in the camper in the meantime with their two children, Bella, 8, and Younger, 5.

Chandler said the camper isn’t suitable for Callie Parker’s recovery, so all her friends were trying their best to finish the home.

James Losee, a home designer who has taken on the role of project manager, has been working at the site on weekends and after work each day. He estimated 40 to 50 people have been on-site in the past two weeks to help complete the house.

“People who don’t even know the family have bought items or donated their time,” he said.

Even children have been taking on jobs to get everything done.

Lakewood Ranch High School at the same time as Chandler, although the girls were two grades apart. Callie graduated in 2004.

They knew of each other, but didn’t become friends until they reconnected years later through a church that no longer exists.

Chandler, a Braden Woods resident, was on vacation at Walt Disney World when she started getting messages about Callie Parker’s car crash. She and her family headed home.

“I started with, ‘What can I do?’” Chandler said. “I came home and picked up her kids from school.”

Friends have taken turns picking up Bella and Younger from school, while Bob Parker works

overtime as a welder to meet his family’s needs.

“We put the needs out there, and they’ve slowly but surely been met,” Chandler said. “Callie can’t talk to me without crying. She’s overwhelmed with the people God has brought to help her and their generosity.”

Friends and people the Parkers don’t even know have donated new and used fans and fixtures, bedding, beds and other items.

Volunteers have even done electrical work and performed yard work.

Callie Parker said each fixture and decoration will serve as a picture of love.

Her friends said they were happy to help.

“We’re all relieved she’s going to be OK,” said Deron Hurley, as he worked on electrical wiring in the garage. “They were so close to getting the house done.”

“All of us want to give back to her and her family what she’s given to us,” said Julie Cook, as she sat cross-legged screwing an outlet cover into the wall on Saturday morning. “She walks in a room and lights it up.”

Tidewell Hospice CEO Gerry Radford says his company has reached, perhaps, the biggest milestone of its 36-year history.

On March 3, Tidewell officials gathered with community representatives to celebrate the groundbreaking of the future Lakewood Ranch Hospice House at 11535 Rangeland Parkway.

“We have a number of Hospice Houses already — seven to be exact,” Radford said. “This new one, our eighth, will be our largest by far.”

The 14,810-square-foot building will accommodate the community’s future needs. Although Hospice Houses range from six to 12 beds, the Lakewood Ranch Hospice House will be equipped to care for 24 patients. Initially, only 12 beds will be available, but the space will be built out in such a way that when the additional rooms are needed, Tidewell will simply install dividing walls in a space that would otherwise remain unused.

During the 2015-2016 fiscal year, Tidewell Hospice provided care to 2,683 Manatee County residents, including 478 Lakewood Ranch-area residents. Its patient count in Manatee County

increased 20% between 2012 and 2015.

The Lakewood Ranch area’s significant growth and plans for continued growth make it a prime location for the facility.

“The important point is the proximity to where people live,” Radford said. “It’s important we’re close to the patients’ families and loved ones so they can spend time with those we care for.”

Tidewell Hospice had a six-bed facility within Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for three years, before closing in May 2015.

The project shifted a curve in Upper Manatee River Road farther north, just south of Waterlefe’s resident-only back entrance.

there is a traffic signal so vehicles can turn south or east to continue on Upper Manatee River Road, or head north toward the future Fort Hamer Bridge.

Johnson Bros. still must install guardrails and put down the final layer of asphalt and restripe the new road, among other items.

“You wait to do the lift,” Gerena said about installation of the final layer, or lift, of asphalt. “You don’t want damage while trucks are still delivering material. Once you do the final lift, you are done.”

Johnson Bros. will wrap up those details in the coming months.

Construction of the bridge itself is about 75% finished.

Johnson expects to have the entire Fort Hamer Bridge improvement project finished by the end of summer, Charles said.

BRIDGE PROJECT

Northbound Upper Manatee River Road detour is lifted.

For the past seven months, a detour on northbound Upper Manatee River Road has taken Waterlefe resident Bill Gratsch more than a mile out of his way to get to the community’s entrance.

On March 1, though, Orlandobased contractor Johnson Bros.

Corp. removed the detour and turned on a new traffic signal just north of Waterlefe’s entrance.

“I think it’s great,” Gratsch said, adding he witnessed many near crashes and confused motorists while the detour was in place. “It was a real nightmare with all the changing lanes.”

“I think everyone is happy the detour is over, and it’s over a little earlier than projected,” said Ken Bumgarner, a longtime resident and supervisor on the Waterlefe Community Development District. “We persevered.”

Residents still have concerns about the future roadway, but are waiting to see how it turns out.

Transportation officials predicted the detour could last into April as Manatee County constructs the Fort Hamer Bridge across the Manatee River, con-

akewood Ranch’s Steve Christie, the Buffalo Bills’ all-time leading scorer and a top NFL placekicker for 15 years, is asked to join business ventures almost on a daily basis.

They never stop coming. But this one was different.

On Saturday, March 11, his wife, Kelly Christie, will literally unfold their new business venture, a Pop Up Pub, at the sixth annual Irish Celtic Festival at Greenbrook Adventure Park.

“At first I was skeptical,” Steve Christie said about the idea of a blow-up pub. “People send us stuff every day. But once I saw it inflated, I was taken aback. It was pretty darn cool.

“I said, ‘Kelly, this would be great for you.’”

Both Christies are real estate agents and both have their hands in a lot of business fires. However, this business, renting an inflatable Irish-style pub to festivals,

“My family lived in upstate New York and owned an Irish bar,”

Kelly Christie said. “I have experience in the food and beverage industry.”

Being of Irish descent, red hair and all, she loves all things Irish.

She was married to Steve in Ireland at the base of Ladies View in Killarney National Park.

During last year’s Irish Celtic Festival, she ran in the Irish Spirits Relay Race, where competitors were forced to drink a beer at various stops.

So Kelly Christie formed Wandering Pub LLC, and she hopes

anyone interested in the 35-foot by 20-foot Pop Up Pub will check it out at the Irish Celtic Festival. It is 16 feet high.

“Everything from the walls to the chimney is inflatable,” said Steve Christie, who won the Best Legs contest at last year’s Irish Celtic Festival after wearing his kilt.

Festival Director Frank Shea had the Christies assemble the pub on his lawn, and he was so impressed he had to rent it for the Irish Celtic Festival.

“It will be a huge draw,” Shea said. “Everyone who sees it thinks about a good memory of their favorite pub.”

The pub seats about 30 people.

Setting up the pub is not difficult, but putting it away can be a chore. Steve Christie, 49, will work with his wife setting it up at the Adventure Park and will put it away, but eventually would like to hire “a young guy” to do that task.

“The biggest struggle is pressing it out. It’s just like an inflatable bed, and it goes into a huge bag.”

Kelly Christie is hoping she can make enough contacts that she can eventually franchise the business. Those who want to check out the pub can go to the Irish Celtic Festival or check out her website at wanderingpub.com.

Governor v. Speaker Let’s hope Gov. Scott and House Speaker Corcoran’s rift over Enterprise Florida doesn’t devolve to the level of D.C. politics. Reassure Floridians with a show of statesmanship.

entlemen, gentlemen. Honorable Gov. Scott and Speaker Richard Corcoran, it doesn’t have to be this way. Nor should it be.

And, frankly, to one extent, Floridians are surprised that it is this way.

You are smart men. Plus, you are on the same team and have the same goal: what’s best for Floridians.

You both want to see more jobs created here, and you both want less government.

To another extent, though, because we all are so cynical these days about politicians — thank you, Washington — Floridians are not so surprised by the rift between you over Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida. Politics has a way of making otherwise smart people do things they otherwise would not.

So before this situation reaches the point of no return — needless ugliness, unproductive stalemates and lost respect, trust and friendships, as has occurred in D.C. — if you could indulge me as your personal adviser on this matter, here’s what I would dispense: Cut it out, guys.

Don’t make yourselves look like Washington politicians. Americans, and Floridians, are sick to their stomachs over this stuff.

In fact, your positions on Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida remind us the advice we frequently receive from our company’s leadership coach: Stay in your adult.

Be statesmen.

Indeed, before this goes any further, get on the phone together and hash this out. This is not an all-or-nothing gambit. You’re politicians. You know as well as anyone that the legislative process is all about incrementalism and compromises to get to the ultimate goal.

You can disagree on your positions.

But surely there is common ground on which the two of you can agree that can result in Florida doing things better than they are being done now at Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida.

Let’s see if we have this right: Mr. Governor, your position is Florida needs to continue to have a tool box of financial incentives — a panoply of tax breaks and actual taxpayer cash paid to “qualifying” businesses — to help Florida have the type of business

They were doing what Floridians elected them to do: Watch over taxpayers’ money.

As Gonzalez and Miller both noted in response to their critics: They voted to continue analyzing the operations and spending of these two organizations.

The discussion and wording of this bill are far from final form.

climate that will retain and attract companies. We know your position: You’re all about jobs; you want to keep the Florida job machine going. And you’ve been great at it.

Likewise, you’ve recognized as a governor that you’re competing against 49 other states whose governors also want what you want. And they all offer similar types of tax breaks to attract companies. So, in spite of your freemarket, limited-government philosophy, you have accepted that tax subsidies for businesses are an unfortunate and unavoidable reality.

We hear it all the time from the state’s economic development recruiters: “You have to have the subsidies if you want to compete.”

We should note, too, however, that unlike many of your counterparts in other states, Mr. Governor, to your credit you have reformed and instituted tougher measurements and requirements to ensure Floridians receive at least a 10% return on their subsidies.

In the same vein, you know from your business experience, that if a company is going to sell more widgets, it needs to market those widgets. That’s the way you see Visit Florida: It sells Florida to attract more customers (tourists). After all, tourism/hospitality is Florida’s biggest industry. It employs and feeds millions of Floridians. We should sell as much as we can.

And this makes sense: Florida should use some of the sales-tax revenue it generates from tourists to keep the tourism wheel turning — just the way businesses allocate portions of their revenue for sales and marketing.

We get it: You see Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida crucial to Florida’s economic vibrancy and growth.

Mr. Speaker, on the other hand, we know you take the view that tax dollars should not be used at all to subsidize private enterprise. If you had your way, you would abolish Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida.

Your view is government should not be deciding winners and losers. It should not be deciding which industries are “qualified targeted industries” eligible for subsidies. And furthermore, you cite audits showing what Floridians already know: Often times, the recipients of incentives don’t live up to expectations. And that makes Floridians feel scammed.

At the same time, Mr. Speaker, you believe state government has an obligation to be transparent with how tax dollars are spent — and that includes sharing with the public how the staffs and boards of Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida spend their tax dollars.

We often hear how it is necessary to keep the negotiations with prospective corporations confidential because they often include competitive trade secrets.

But Floridians would welcome Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida operating far more in the sunshine. They at least should be providing quarterly or annual reports similarly transparent to what is required of public companies — financial statements and executive compensation.

As an aside here, gentlemen, and just so you know, I must offer full disclosure as your adviser: I side with Speaker Corcoran on Enterprise Florida, tax subsidies and corporate incentives.

That stems from a conversation many years ago with the late Nobel economist Milton Friedman. We interviewed him on Alabama offering MercedesBenz $350 million in subsidies to build a plant near Tuscaloosa. Friedman retorted: “Go ask the fixed-income widow down in Mobile whether she thinks it’s fair to take her money to help

Mercedes-Benz.”

Or it’s economist Arthur Laffer’s Rule of One. To measure the effectiveness or fairness of any government program, Laffer applies it to one person. Say you’re a retail business owner in Sarasota, and you have built your company over the past 20, 30, 40 years without a nickel of government subsidies and faithfully paid taxes. Now comes along Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and he knocks on your door and asks you to help pay his taxes so he can build and operate a distribution plant up the road. You’d shut the door on him.

Yes, it would be a much better country if states did not try to steal each other’s employers with taxpayer subsidies. It would be a better country if politician-lawmakers understood that tax subsidies always help one at the expense of another. Friedman again: “What you give to one you must take away from another.”

And it would be a better country if the CEOs and business owners who accept these subsidies would recognize, in the end, they ultimately are in the wrong. When they accept a subsidy, they are making the immoral choice of taking, by force, someone else’s money to help themselves. They should take the moral position of saying: “No, we’ll make it on our own.”

So let’s be realistic, Mr. Governor and Mr. Speaker. Both of you know you’re not going to get all that you want.

Governor, you know the Legislature is not going to appropriate $250 million for Enterprise Florida. Likewise, Mr. Speaker, you know, even if you were able to win your House colleagues’ support, the Senate and governor’s veto pen will not abolish Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida.

But there are steps that can bring the two of you closer together for the good of Floridians.

The first: Work to improve transparency and accountability. Mr. Governor, you ran in 2010 on bringing more accountability to state government. It’s working. Show on the Enterprise Florida website easy-to-understand reports of what companies received subsidies; what they contracted to perform; and grade them on outcomes, just as we do public schools.

Second: more transparency. The compensation and spending of Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida should be as transparent as it is for all government employees and public companies.

Their respective websites should make it easy for Floridians to find and see income and expenses and line-item budgets as detailed as those required at every government level.

Then stand together at a press conference and share with Floridians what steps you are taking together to improve the way Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida operate. It would be comforting and reassuring to Floridians to see two of the top three state elected officeholders standing side by side, smiling, acknowledging their differences and perspectives, but also saying you have agreed and compromised on measures that will make these two organizations more accountable and transparent.

And it would be comforting and reassuring to Floridians to hear the two of you continue your commitments to making Florida the most attractive state in the nation for business on the basis of the fundamentals and principles you hold dear: low taxes, low regulation, good infrastructure, good schools and safe streets. Let individual Floridians, not government, decide how best to spend their money.

“There are so many highprofile people attending today,” Kasten said of the event. “We provide a social aspect for them.”

I checked out the gun. Very cool. I guess I need to learn to

shoot.

If I can’t hit the clays, perhaps I can make a business deal that will help me ease into retirement.

You know the ones, where you get a drink, then you hang out with all the people you know, looking over at those you don’t.

Heather Kasten, executive director of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, knows it sometimes takes a push to get people to mix. To that end, she has loaded her members into a bus for a day-long tour of Lakewood Ranch or Bradenton. She has arranged intimate dinners and trips to Tampa Bay Lightning hockey games. Then there is the usual day on the golf course.

I checked out one of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance’s more unusual networking events — an afternoon of shooting March 3 at Ancient Oak Gun Club.

After all, what says “Let’s do business” better than arming everyone with shotguns?

Actually, it quickly became apparent that those who blast apart clay targets share some kind of unspoken bond. A little camo and an ammo vest apparently can get people in the right frame of mind to talk business turkey.

Paul Adamson, of Gator Air Conditioning, said sporting clays is a great event for networking.

“You have more interaction,” he said. “It’s definitely more effective than golf, where you ride around with one guy and maybe you see a couple others on the green.”

Adamson, who formerly worked for a bank, said he once struck a financing deal for a business’s new headquarters by networking at Ancient Oak. Blam. Blam. Now sign on the dotted line.

Books mark big week at Willis Authors try to inspire students during Read Across America Week.

Mary Uihlein had finished reading to the combined fifth-grade classes of Stacy Galiardo and Laura Martin at Lakewood Ranch’s Robert Willis Elementary School and was preparing to pack up her eight “Hello Little Owl” series books.

Uihlein had appeared as part of Read Across America Week, which on this day, March 2, was celebrating the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The purpose was to get children excited about reading books, and perhaps writing them.

While Uihlein might have

wondered if she had provided any excitement to the children in terms of writing, that was answered before she could get out the door.

“A cute little girl came up with a story she had started writing,” said Uihlein, who lives with her husband, Jamie, in Lido Key. “It was an adorable story about three different kitty cats.”

Uihlein can’t remember if she had any similar inspiration when she attended school, but she does remember how much she loved reading to her son, James.

That was evident on March 2 as her voice fluctuated when she read about her characters. Sometimes her voice would drop lower to bass and sometimes rise higher to a soprano. At times, depending on the character, she would add some Texas twang.

“My son used to love that,” she said of her reading style.

The students were asked to talk about the characters. Every hand in the room shot toward the sky.

“I was impressed how they interacted,” Uihlein said of the students. “They were paying

attention. These kids had a job to do, to pick out character traits, and they did.”

The students could be reading more of Uihlein’s “Hello Little Owl” series in the future (all the books can be found by going to hellolittleowl.com). Scott, who has written 38 books and has more than 1.1 million downloads online, is coaching Uihlein to help her broaden her audience.

“Oh my gosh, Mary’s art,” Scott said about Uihlein’s books. “She cannot only tell the story, she can illustrate it. It’s phenomenal.”

Scott, who teaches a seminar on writing books and getting them published the second Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Four Pillars in Lakewood Ranch, said it wouldn’t be surprising if one of the students becomes an author.

“The beautiful thing about writing is that you never are too young or too old,” said Scott, who as a fifth-grader remembers writing a story about Charlie Brown falling in love with Lucy.

“And it’s so inspiring for these students to see a career field they never thought about. One writing assignment can turn into a lifetime adventure.”

Time to clown around ODA European literature students quiz circus performers during Circus Sarasota field trip.

During an Out-of-Door Academy field trip to Circus Sarasota, junior Ashley DeBartolo discovered that members of The Flying Wallendas circus act have balance.

In their lives.

Eighteen European literature students conducted one-on-one interviews March 3 with 10 circus performers.

DeBartolo interviewed Erendira Ashton-Vazquez Wallenda, an eighth-generation high wire performer. DeBartolo was surprised by what she heard.

“A lot of us think of the Wallendas as crazy circus performers,” DeBartolo said. “But today I learned that they are just like us.

She was very social and humble.

She gave us good advice and told us pretty much her whole life story.”

This opportunity was provided through an ODA and Circus Arts Conservatory partnership that has been in place for three years.

Since the partnership began, students have been interns, volunteers and photographers for Circus Sarasota. This was the first interview session.

Marcia Carlson Pack with the Circus Arts Conservatory was a critical player in the development of the partnership with ODA. She

said educating students about the circus is a necessity.

“Ever since the partnership officially began three years ago it has just blossomed,” Carlson Pack said. “The circus is older than baseball, and it is a huge part of our culture. It’s also a melting pot. The artists represented in the circus are from all over the world, and their roots go way back.”

The purpose of the field trip was to allow students to have a personal experience with circus performers. Students were separated into pairs and assigned one circus performer to research and interview. Then they were assigned to create a presentation and paper about them.

ODA teacher Camela Giraud was thrilled her students had the opportunity. She said her students were being exposed to life's many paths.

“There are incredibly deep circus origins in Europe,” Giraud said.

Blake Wallenda, 28, of The Flying Wallendas, agreed with Giraud.

Wallenda talked to the students about the importance of the circus in Europe since they were European literature students.

“The circus is rooted from Europe, and a lot of the circus culture comes from European culture,” Wallenda said. “By studying the circus, the students can learn a great deal about stage presence, characteristics, culture, inspiration — they can be enlightened in all forms of entertainment.”

Joseph Domenic Bauer Jr., the ringmaster for this season's Circus Sarasota, said the students also could learn how important family life is to circus performers.

“It is really good for them (students) to stay family oriented,” Bauer said. “The circus is a very special art.”

Students digest job seminars Braden River High School hosts its third annual Academy Fest.

Braden River High School’s third annual Academy Fest on March 1 included a presentation about a sweet career.

“The culinary arts session with Manatee Technical College was definitely the most popular among the students,” said Braden River teacher Stephanie Atkins.

“I think some were going because they were being fed. Some of the students want to be chefs, and some kids just want to be fed and

More than 2,000 students, who were able to sign up for two of their preferred sessions, attended the 35-minute lectures.

“This year we did not even have to look for speakers,” Atkins said.

“A lot of people sought us out this year. I think this is because it is a great opportunity for them, and a lot of these places are really trying to recruit for colleges, law enforcement or the military. We also are trying to do more with technology during this event.”

CAN’T BANK ON SCHEME 3000 block of 53rd Avenue East, Bradenton Fraud: A man entered a bank and deposited a worthless check of $8,800.47 into his account. The following day, the man attempted to withdraw $7,900 from his account before the check bounced.

Seeing that he was withdrawing such a large amount so quickly, the bank froze his account until his check would clear, which it did not. The bank contacted the Manatee Sheriff’s Office.

NO EASY ACCESS 25000 block of State Road 64 East, Myakka City Information only: A woman came into the Sheriff’s Office to report an incident involving her neighbors allegedly trespassing on an easement that is adjacent to both her and her neighbors’ property. The woman said she and the neighbors are supposed to have access to the front portion of the easement that leads to State Road 64. She said only she is supposed to have access to the easement that runs adjacent to her property and leads down to the lake behind her property.

She said her neighbors opened two gates that are on her portion of the easement and drove their truck down to the lake. She said the neighbors ignored her warnings not to drive on that portion.

Deputies advised the woman the matter is primarily a civil matter.

A FORE GONE CONCLUSION 600 block of Upper Manatee River Road, Bradenton Information only: A woman reported to the Sheriff’s Office that as she was driving her 2003 Chevy Silverado on Upper Manatee River Road, the passenger window on the driver’s side of her truck suddenly shattered. She said it appeared a golf ball struck the window as she drove by The Links at Greenfield Plantation golf course. She was not able to identify the golfer who hit the ball. She said there were no injuries to her or the two passengers in the truck with her and that she would contact her insurance company about the damage. She was issued a report number.

he Lakewood Ranch boys basketball players had one final team dinner on Monday, celebrating the program’s accomplishments this season and for the previous three.

Mustangs coach Jeremy Schiller will take a few weeks off before turning his attention to the 20172018 season. Left behind, hopefully, will be the crushing emotions of a 54-49 loss March 3 to eventual state champion Sickles in the state semifinals.

Even with their historic run during the past three years, it won’t be easy for Schiller or any of his players to move on from the semifinal defeat. The program also must overcome the loss of its coveted senior class.

Those eight seniors helped change Lakewood Ranch into a school known for quality basketball. They have been the core of the team for two seasons, so Schiller’s challenge will be creating the same chemistry among the players who will have to fill their roles.

The good news for Lakewood Ranch is next year’s team will include Evan Spiller, Jackson Kelley and Damien Gordon.

Spiller made the key steal at the end of the regional final against St. Petersburg to lock up that victory, and has shown great ability as a distributor of the ball. Kelley

became more of a presence in the post as the season progressed.

Gordon might have been the most talented player this season, and scored a game-high 20 points against Sickles despite going just 2-for-9 from beyond the arc.

Schiller knows he has a nucleus to build around, which is why he believes next year’s Mustangs have a shot to return to Lakeland.

They may not match the depth of this year’s unit, but the Lakewood Ranch junior varsity did go 19-3, so there is raw talent in the pipeline as well.

Schiller said the development of the returning trio as leaders will be vital. Before, he said, they could rely on the older players to be vocal and motivate the team through tough situations. Now, they’ll be the role models.

The leadership culture established during the past four seasons must be sustained. After the semifinal, Gordon expressed disappointment that he did not make a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game that would have tied it. Taking responsibility in that moment is a sign that Gordon can develop into the leader the Mustangs need.

As far as forgetting the cruel ending to the season, all the Mustangs and their fans will wonder if Sam Hester, the school’s alltime leading scorer, hadn’t been injured (sprained ankle) early, they would have been state champions.

Schiller thinks it’s possible, even probable, that having the team’s “closer” available would have made up the 5-point margin of defeat.

“I think I will never get over it for Sam (Hester),” Schiller said.

“My heart will forever be broken.”

Schiller also thanked the Lakewood Ranch community for its support all season, and hopes the experience of reaching the Final Four will inspire a drive in everyone, the community included, to get back next season and achieve even more success.

Gavin Root Gavin Root is a senior infielder on the Braden River baseball team. He hit .302 last season and is on pace to smash that average in his final season, leading the team with both a .357 average and 10 RBI as of March 6.

When did you start playing baseball?

About six years ago. I started out playing football and got kind of tired of it. I wanted to try something different, and all my friends started playing baseball. I skipped T-ball and went to the pitching machine.

What is your favorite baseball memory?

Probably when we swept Lakewood (Ranch) last year. That’s our biggest rival, and all the kids I grew up playing with go to that school. All of them were talking about beating us, and then we beat them three times in a row.

Big wrestling efforts fall just short for locals

W

hen Braden River senior wrestler Chance Sharbono (48-6) woke up last Saturday at 5:55 a.m., the world was still pitch black.

He shook off the cobwebs of sleep and made himself a protein shake and bar. The day before, at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, he had reached the semifinals of the Class 2A wrestling tournament in the 138-pound class. Saturday was his day. He had already found more success than his father, Christian Sharbono, did in high school, and he wanted that title. He was going to take it.

At least, that was the idea.

First up in Sharbono’s way was senior Grant Cardwell of Dunedin (48-4) in the semifinals.

Sharbono said he was not nervous before or during the match.

He and Cardwell had faced each other a handful of times, and Sharbono had a blueprint in his mind of how to handle him.

“I knew as long as I was on the attack that he would not be able to do anything,” Sharbono said.

“He started to back up after I started to attack him. It all went according to plan.”

Sharbono won by major decision, 9-1, locking up at least a second-place finish and setting up a tango with Land O’ Lakes sophomore Jacob Conrad (40-3), the 14-seed entering the tournament, in the first-place match.

With almost a whole afternoon to go before the first-place match, Sharbono waited until Braden River’s heavyweight, Brendan Bengtsson (49-4), finished and won his first match of the day, then headed back to his hotel room.

What did Sharbono do in those hours? Eat and sleep, of course.

He downed three meatball sliders and took a two-hour nap to get his body prepared. Christian Sharbono gave him a quick pep talk, and then it was back to the arena.

Unfortunately, the first-place match did not go Sharbono’s way. Conrad got the first point, and Sharbono quickly matched him. Regulation ended with the score 1-1.

“In the overtime, both of us were dead tired,” Sharbono said. “It was basically a battle of who could hold on the longest.

He rode me out, and then he escaped with two or three seconds left on the clock.”

It was a day of mixed emotions for East County wrestlers.

Bengtsson lost his first-place match to undefeated Riverdale senior Cole Schneider by fall, and Lakewood Ranch senior Hunter Reed (42-1) lost in the Class 3A 132-pound first-place match to South Dade senior Alyis Mursuli by fall.

ously unbeaten Cypress Lake junior Jalen Soto (41-1) to reach that point. In talking with Sharbono and Braden River coach Damon Eikenhorst last week, Soto was who they expected to go up against in the final match.

They were ready for him. They were less prepared for Conrad, seeing as he and Sharbono had never wrestled. They had seen each other at weekend tournaments growing up, Sharbono said, but they were always in

sport, something that Sharbono is taking solace in himself. Over Braden River’s spring break in two weeks, he will be visiting six midwestern schools, including Lindenwood University, the University of Central Missouri and Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville.

With his high school wrestling career all but behind him (he’ll partake in a final tournament in Orlando in June), Sharbono said he is satisfied with what he’s accomplished, and he credits his success to hard work. By his own admission, Sharbono was not born the greatest athlete.

He’s built up his strength, both physical and mental, through dedication to his craft. It’s a point of pride for him, and it absolutely should be.

Congratulations to Sharbono, Bengtsson, Reed and all the other senior wrestlers who left everything they had on the mat in pursuit of a title. Even though it turned out to be just out of reach, I have complete confidence that the experience will lead them to victory in whatever endeavors they grapple with in the future.

ormer B.D. Gullett Elementary School principal Kathy McLean said the school’s success over its first 10 years has nothing to do with curriculum, the administration or the facility.

As Gullett celebrated with its 10th Anniversary Gala on March 4, McLean said it has everything to do with the students.

McLean, who was Gullett’s first principal, said the school had 420 students and 30 teachers when it opened. It now has about 900 students.

“When I was the principal, we always knew every child’s name,” McLean said.

About 130 administrators, parents and district board celebrated at Seasons 52 Fresh Grill, in the Mall at University Town Center.

reenbrook resident Mark Leatt was out of breath after earning “Super Dad” status as he crossed the finish line during the annual Take Stock in Children run.

In the 5K race March 5 that started and finished at Lakewood Ranch Main Street, he finished fourth overall, just a few steps behind his son, Jonathan, who ran it in under 20 minutes.

Mark Leatt had trouble talking just past the finish line while Jonathan Leatt spoke as if he had just walked across the street.

“He’s good,” Mark Leatt said

after a moment. “I try to keep up. I think he has a gift. He enjoys running.”

The Leatts joined more than 1,800 other runners in the fundraiser for Take Stock in Children, a mentoring and scholarship program in Manatee County.

The event started with children’s dashes, before 10K and 5K runs and a one-mile walk.

After completing the run down Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, participants enjoyed food and drink, vendor booths and other festivities.

One of the highlights of the tour, conducted by SMART’s incoming Executive Director Brandi Ezell and SMART board member Nick Drizos, was a meeting with Magic, a blind bay quarter horse and his companion and “seeingeye horse” 33-year-old K.C. Magic, who learned to function flawlessly despite being blind.

The visit culminated with a Cupcakes and Carrots Party for students and volunteers, with goodies supplied by the Women’s Club.
