History makers Diana Greene, superintendent of Manatee County schools, visited Carlos E. Haile Middle School on Feb. 23 for a Black History Month presentation. “We can all make history,” Greene said to the students in an assembly. “The only way you can make history is by first accepting who you are. School was my way of figuring out who I wanted to be and how I could be better.”

Battalion chief climbs ladder East Manatee Fire Rescue’s William Hall, shown with his wife, Amber, has a new role — deputy chief. EMFR Chief Lee Whitehurst administered the oath to Hall during the Feb. 20 meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Hall’s wife pinned on his new badge. Hall has been with the district since 2001 and was promoted from his former role as battalion chief.
