t was a quiet, windy day in Summerfield Park, just perfect for a little girl and her pinwheel.

Gianna Lesselroth would take off on a run, often sidetracked by some pretty flowers. She would stop to pick at a flower, then would get back to the task of watching her pinwheel spin. Then it would be off again on a run.

Not far away, her mom, Marissa Lesselroth, kept an eye on her.

Marissa Lesselroth has to appreciate the quiet moments, because most of the first four years of Gianna’s life have been anything but.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Former Center for Building Hope workers find success in new endeavors.

T

here’s life again on the 4.8-acre campus, formerly home to Center for Building Hope, a nonprofit meant to provide support for cancer victims and their families.

In December, Newgate Montessori School moved its secondary students into their new home at 5481 Communications Parkway in the Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park. Secondary-school children now play sports in the parking lot, type on laptops by windows and

engage in life discussions around tables in what is now a cafeteria. Sponsorship plaques outside rooms serve as a reminder of the building’s original purpose — to help those with a serious illness.

Center for Building Hope closed in fall 2015, following financial failures, the closure of its subsidiary Brides Against Breast Cancer and the firing of its CEO, Carl Ritter. Programs for cancer patients were transferred to Jewish Family & Children’s Services in September 2015.

Of more than a dozen requests for interviews with former employees and board members, only a handful agreed. As one woman put it: “It’s in the past, and we all want to keep it in the past.”

But how did an idea so noble go so wrong?

Here’s a look at what some of the center’s former advocates are now doing.

“I play the computer, type emails,” she said with a laugh.

At CBH, Townsend helped transform the organization’s subsidiary, Brides Against Breast Cancer, which sold wedding gowns at bridal shows across the country, growing from a $500,000 to a $2.2 million operation in 18 months. She’d given her resignation before the organization failed, but had stayed on long enough to help with a final event in January 2015.

She was already working on her new business, Music Compound, having learned during college local musicians needed a place to rehearse, practice and perform. Townsend turned the idea into a business plan that weaves

together rehearsal and practice space for musicians, music lessons for children, music-related field trips for students and other activities.

“I’m really trying to supplement what the kids aren’t getting in the school system,” Townsend said.

Her vision is to “inspire, collaborate and educate.”

Townsend’s three-year plan is to have five locations. Is it ambitious?

Yes. “I just feel like it’s possible with the right team,” she said. “It’s cool to be a musician. The kids are looking for things like this.

The timing is good.”

ANDREA FELDMAR Former role: Program director for CBH What she’s doing: Counseling Andrea Feldmar has shifted her focus from creating programming for cancer patients to oneon-one counseling for anyone grappling with a serious medical condition.

She assisted when CBH transitioned its services to Jewish Family & Children’s Services in September 2015 and helped lead programming there for months afterward.

However, in May, she opened her own counseling practice, at 5104 N. Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota, specializing in medical support counseling.

“This has really been my life’s work,” Feldmar said. “This is what I love to do. Your life changes when you get a devastating diagnosis, and nobody really talks

LAWSUIT UPDATE

Former role: Board of directors for CHB What he’s doing: Board of directors for CHB; continues working as a financial adviser Brian Mariash, a financial planner in Sarasota, served on the board of directors when Center for Building Hope closed more than a year ago. Today, he remains one of three people still listed as board members — the minimum needed to carry CBH through bankruptcy proceedings.

Mariash helped find an interim CEO, Ron Geldman, for CHB as it closed its doors and helped many of the organization’s employees find jobs elsewhere. He also has overseen the transition of CHB programming to Jewish Family & Children’s Services.

“The goal was really just to stabilize,” said Mariash, who volunteers with JFCS. “They’ve done a good job, and now they’re back in building mode.”

Cancer support programs are no longer held in a building designed specifically for cancer patients, but Mariash said cancer patients remain grateful for services, no matter where they are held.

“I feel confident of the amount of people we helped. The charity is gone, but the mission continues,” Mariash said. “We’ll actually end up stronger than we were before. I’m confident about that.

I won’t stop until that is what’s happening.”

Feldmar’s passion for medical support counseling, in particular, stems from her own experiences watching her now 24-year-old daughter, Robyn, battle leukemia as a child. Doctors, she said, talk about treatments and outcomes, but not about emotional wellbeing.

“People need to talk about things,” she said.

Jana Marie Lyons had only been with Center for Building Hope for about a year when the organization closed. Her grandmother had died of cancer in early 2014, striking a connection with the CBH mission. She was hired to plan 5K races across the country, with proceeds to benefit the center.

“I thought it would be a good fit for me,” Lyons said. “It was giving back. I wanted to stretch myself.”

A week before CBH’s staff was laid off, Lyons quit. She returned to her training as an esthetician, opening her own business, Viziato, in downtown Sarasota.

“I opened a spa in a weekend,” she said. “It’s been going really

good. I love being creative, and I love seeing people and making them happy.”

Lyons primarily sees clients at Viziato, located on Palm Avenue, where she offers facials, waxes, laser hair removal and other services and sells toxin-free makeup and other products. But two days a week, she also performs laser treatments at a doctor’s office.

Center for Building Hope’s former CEO Carl Ritter has filed three lawsuits in Sarasota County related to his departure from CBH. Two complaints are for libel and slander against media groups — Halifax Sarasota, the former owner of the Sarasota HeraldTribune, and Nonprofit Information Networking Association, both for publishing articles that “defame” Ritter and his wife, Carol’s, names and reputations, among other allegations.

The NINA case has been moved in the U.S. District Court for Middle District of Florida, while the Halifax case remains open in the court for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Sarasota County.

Ritter also has filed a complaint against Health Support Network, parent company of Center for Building Hope, alleging he was misled about the organization’s financial situation at the time of his hiring in September 2010, that he was terminated in “bad faith,” and that he is owed more than $300,000 in unpaid severance, among other allegations. That case has been moved to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Middle District of Florida, Tampa division.

A criminal complaint against Ritter, alleging he took about $20,000 in donations, was turned over to the State Attorney Office from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The case is still under review.

FDOT finalizes roundabout design

Overpass concept advancing

The future configuration of Rye Road at State Road 64 will be a roundabout.

The Florida Department of Transportation announced Jan. 27 that FDOT officials have approved the final state environmental impact report for the intersection of State Road 64 and Rye Road and have selected a modern roundabout design for the location.

The next phase, preparing construction plans, already is underway, FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen said.

Design and right-of-way acquisition funding is in FDOT’s 20162017 fiscal year budget. Construction funding will be available in 2017-2018. Construction should take about 18 months.

Sarasota County commissioners on Jan. 24 took the first step to approval of an overpass across Interstate 75.

Commissioners unanimously voted to send to the state for review a proposed alignment for a flyover connecting Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Cattlemen Road between University Parkway and Fruitville Road. The decision puts the overpass just north of a water tower on the east side of I-75.

“Our transportation models have demonstrated there is a necessity for an east-west connection between University Parkway and Fruitville Road,” Sarasota County Transportation Planning Manager Paula Wiggins said.

The commission is expected to finalize the alignment in April.

Growlers offers a new bite Sarasota restaurateur donates his expertise to help create a new Lakewood Ranch menu.

As a veteran of the restaurant industry, Sarasota’s Mark Caragiulo has faced a plethora of challenges.

Over the past few weeks, he faced his “smallest” challenge yet, a kitchen less than 3-by-3 feet in size.

“To produce food, probably, it’s literally about 30 inches of counter we have to get creative with,” Caragiulo said. “A good commercial sandwich press is going to be our workhorse.”

Caragiulo, who has opened well more than 20 restaurants, including his family’s flagship eatery, Caragiulos Italian Restaurant, in Sarasota, as well as the popular Owen’s Fish Camp and Veronica Fish & Oyster, both in Sarasota, and Shore Diner, on St. Armands Circle, came to the aid of Jeanne Dooley, owner of Craft Growlers to Go, at Lakewood Ranch Main Street.

Dooley, who opened Growlers about one year ago, wanted to add food offerings for her customers.

Caragiulo quickly saw why.

“For me, personally, I don’t know how long I can sit here and drink without eating something,” he said.

Dooley approached Caragiulo because she had eaten at his restaurants and was familiar with his expertise in the food-and-beverage industry.

“I’m a 30-year golf pro,” Dooley said. “I instinctively knew I needed help. I knew it would be a layering process.”

Caragiulo came in and began getting creative. Growlers’ bartenders would be making food items as they served beers, so offerings had to be quick and simple — three steps or less, Caragiulo said.

“It all goes with beer,” said Dooley of the new menu, which debuted Jan. 27. “Whether you want a snack or something more substantial, we have it.”

To start, there will be sweet and spicy bacon beer nuts, deviled eggs, five alarm chili, a turkey and brie quesadilla and miniature German bratwurst on a pretzel roll. The Kentucky hot brown with beer cheese sauce is a salute to Dooley’s Kentucky upbringing.

“Everybody from Kentucky knows what a hot brown is,” she said of the turkey sandwich made famous by the Brown Hotel in

Caragiulo said the menu is a starting point from which Growlers can expand. After the staff becomes comfortable with preparing foods while working, they can become more creative, potentially adding menu items like meatball subs, hot pastrami sandwiches or others.

Dooley said the new menu will help Growlers be more like the local pub it has become. She is grateful for Caragiulo’s support.

The next step will be re-envisioning Growlers’ interior. Caragiulo said it is important for a restaurant to have an identity.

“When you walk away, you can say it in a sentence,” he said.

Dooley has a Pinterest board of

ideas she likes — inspiration to help create more “cozy” spaces and better reflect the establishment and its patrons.

Dooley offered to pay Caragiulo, but he refused. Caragiulo said he’s happy to be part of Growlers’ evolution.

“You don’t want to see anybody fail,” Caragiulo said. “To give somebody every option to be successful is important to me.

I know how hard this business is.

At the end of the day, I want to live in a town with exceptional food and beverage destinations. It’s a cool craft beer joint that will be made cooler by a nice little snack offering.”

Condo project on the rise After delays, Lakeshore’s construction begins on Lake Uihlein.

The Lakeshore condos project has been in the plans since the mid-2000s, but was put on hold in 2008 when the residential real estate market crashed.

In June 2014, former owner/ developer Larry Pearce relaunched the project.

Clearwater-based The Bullard Group, owned by Fred Bullard Jr., purchased the 1.3acre property from Pearce in 2016.

Last spring, plans originally hatched in the mid-2000s for luxury condominiums along Lake Uihlein were dusted off by developer Bullard Group. The first thing the company did was redesign floor plans and interiors.

By summer, the plans were ready, but the project was put on hold as Manatee County and Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch took the new designs under review.

“When the project stopped in 2008, the county hadn’t looked at it in eight years,” said Jack Bodziak, the project architect.

Bullard Group finally began site work last week on the twobuilding, 44-unit project on property just south of Lakewood Ranch Main Street. The complex will border Lake Uihlein and run roughly from The Fish Hole Miniature Golf north to the Michael Saunders building.

Bullard Group must first verify the location of foundations constructed on the property about a decade ago. Those foundations are buried underground, and contractors will spend eight to 12 weeks uncovering them, running utilities and preparing the site for construction of the buildings, now expected to start in the spring.

After a break in the action, the helistop issue is back.

Owners of The Concession Golf Club want to expand land uses on their property by adding a 100-by-100-foot helistop.

Residents of the neighboring Panther Ridge and other communities are exercising their right to protest the proposed change.

The Concession Golf Club on Thursday will seek approval from the Manatee County Commission to allow construction of a private helistop as an accessory use to the golf course. It would be located adjacent to the clubhouse, rather than toward the community’s back entrance, near State Road 70, as originally proposed.

The Concession’s attorney, Ed Vogler, said the application complies with all county codes and zoning ordinances, including one carried forward from development approvals in 2004 that states “No helipad is allowed within this project unless approved by the Board of County Commissioners at a public hearing.�

The hearing has been delayed three times since its April 2016 Planning Commission hearing — twice at the request of the developer and once because of Hurrican Hermine. “The owners of The Concession Golf Club had nothing to do with the original development approv-

This is not a land use that’s compatible with residential Florida,� Panther Ridge resident Scott Andress said.

Panther Ridge residents hired an attorney to help develop a legal defense, and resident Daniela Drillman, who has spearheaded opposition, will present arguments on behalf of owners.

Consider in September 2015, when more than 75 cruisers from police departments all over Massachusetts gave Gianna and her then 5-year-old brother, Logan, a police escort to the Tewksbury Police Department. The two children were on the verge of a risky stem cell transplant, and the law enforcement groups wanted to show their support with an event put together by the Cops for Kids nonprofit.

At 4 months old, Gianna was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and went through treatment that left her in remission for two years. In May 2015, the leukemia returned. Her parents, Michael and Marissa Lesselroth, started a nationwide search to find options for their daughter. They eventually found the Dana-Farber Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.

The course was set. Gianna needed to find a bone marrow

match, and the search began.

Eventually, 457 people went to the Bradenton Police Department to be checked to see if they were a match to help the little girl.

None was.

Eventually, doctors decided to use Logan as the donor. The procedure was performed Sept.

24, 2015, with Logan pressing a button that started the transfer of his blood stem cells. In Boston Children’s Hospital’s Insight publication, Gianna was quoted as saying, “This is a gift from your body,” as her brother started the procedure.

Since that time, things have quieted down for the Lesselroths, who are all back together at their Mill Creek home, hoping Gianna can now focus on truly important things, such as playing with the pinwheel.

Reading about Gianna’s travails, Braden Woods resident Tara Motzenbecker had an idea.

She would run in the 121st Boston Marathon on April 17 as part of Boston Children’s Hospital Miles for Miracles team. Gianna Lesselroth would be her “partner” in the endeavor, and money raised would be donated to the chil-

dren’s hospital in Gianna’s name.

Motzenbecker and her husband, Jared, have two children, 7-year-old Zoe and 5-year-old John. She couldn’t imagine going through the ordeal the Lesselroths have been forced to endure.

“I had read her story and about her bone marrow drive,” Motzenbecker said. “It breaks a mother’s heart to read that.”

Motzenbecker got in touch with Marissa Lesselroth and asked if they would participate in her effort. Although she wasn’t familiar with the program, Marissa Lesselroth wanted to give something back to the children’s hospital that treated them so well.

“If you have to go through something like this, that was the place to be,” Marissa Lesselroth said of Boston Children’s Hospital. “It was something special.”

At 36, Motzenbecker has been running for only four years.

Her first running event was the Jingle Bell 5K, which at the time was still being run in downtown Bradenton. She built to the point where she ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 2015 in Washington, D.C., where she suffered through iliotibial band issues.

Motzenbecker is willing to experience that pain again to raise money for a good cause.

In support, the Lesselroths have been sending her letters and photos of Gianna.

“She is just adorable,” Motzenbecker said.

Motzenbecker and the Lesselroths hope to get together a few times for special events before the Boston Marathon, and Marissa Lesselroth said she hopes her family can get to the race. Miles for Miracles has a special viewing section near the finish of the race.

The trip to Boston would be for a more pleasant experience.

“It has been hard, but you just do what you have to do for your kids,” Marissa Lesselroth said.

“Being positive is a big part of it.

We always remain positive and hopeful.

“This is part of our life now,” she said. “There is not a day that goes by we don’t think about it.”

MILES FOR MIRACLES What: Braden Woods’ Tara Motzenbecker will run in the Boston Marathon on April 17 in partnership with Mill Creek 4-year-old Gianna Lesselroth, who has fought leukemia for most of her life, on the Miles for Miracles team.

Goal: Motzenbecker hopes to raise $8,888.

“Eight is my lucky number,” she said. She has raised $2,566 so far and all funds go to patient care and research at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Now living in Seattle, Brown said he hopes to return for the World Rowing Championships.

He said even though it is a tough sport to watch from the banks, you can pick up on some subtleties. He watches each boat’s coxswain to see when he or she picks up the tempo of the boat.

He watches as the front of the boats take turns poking in front of the other and he loves the gut-wrenching endings, where the athletes are matched in an all-out sprint, even though they are drained.

“There is a lot of courage and grit in this,” he said.

Again, it wasn’t until he learned about what goes into the sport that he could appreciate it. Those promoting the event are going to do whatever they can to educate those in the area about what the athletes put into their craft before they get on the water.

Bill Miller, who lives half the year on St. Armands Circle, is a rowing historian who said the sport is becoming more spectator friendly with Jumbotrons to bring them closer to the action.

After chatting and signing copies of his book for more than an hour, Brown talked about becoming a rowing fan.

“When I started the project, I didn’t know anything about rowing. Zip. Zero,” he said. “But I learned it’s a sport where everyone depends on everyone else.

t’s a given the 2017 World Rowing Championships can’t rival the drama of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin when the world was headed toward war.

An argument also can be made Daniel James Brown’s best-selling book, “The Boys in the Boat” is more of a period piece than a rowing story. Brown wrote about nine Americans’ quest for the rowing gold medal in 1936.

No matter how you look at it, though, it appears those who open themselves up to the sport tend to like it.

That was the hope Jan. 26 at Polo Grill and Bar in Lakewood Ranch as Brown made an appearance to help promote the 2017 World Rowing Championships. The idea is that as more people learn about rowing, the more they will be interested in going to Nathan Benderson Park on Sept. 24 through Oct. 1 to see this year’s premier event.

More than 100 people bought tickets to meet and chat with Brown, but most of them already have been won over by the sport.

The chore for those who run this year’s world championships will be to entice everyone else.

Brown, it turns out, is the perfect example of a person who has been won over by the sport.

Tuning in to the story Lakewood Ranch High School students explore an alternative journalism platform.

Lakewood High School journalism teacher Thomas Honsa is exposing his students to an emerging platform in scholastic journalism to enhance their budding skills — podcasting.

Honsa, who has taught journalism at the East County high school since 1998, said listening to the school’s podcast is akin to getting hooked on a television show, only you aren’t watching anything.

“Somebody called podcasting the Netflix of audio, and I thought that was brilliant,” Honsa said. “In a society that multitasks as much as Americans do, podcasts are one of those things that is probably one of the most convenient forms of information out there.”

Podcasts, he said, offer “something that’s informative, entertaining and productive while you are doing other things.”

Ahead podcast program, the first high school in East County to offer a multiplatform journalism program.

Four students are involved in the podcast production— senior editor Riley Murphy, junior Amelia Dasovich, senior Hannah Vicars and sophomore Isabella Young. Honsa said he hopes to attract more students to the podcast crew in the years to come.

Murphy said she enjoys doing podcasts because it enhances her journalism skills.

“At the beginning of my junior

year, (Honsa) asked if anyone wanted to pick this up, and I thought it would be a good idea,” Murphy said. “I’m horrible at interviews because I’m really shy.

Sometimes, I would even send friends to go and do interviews for me, and I figured doing the podcast would give me an opportunity to work on my interviewing skills. I’m really glad I had time to practice this skill.”

Podcasting involves a number of skills. After an interview is conducted and recorded in a quiet room, podcasters upload the

audio on their computers and use the Audacity program to remove unnecessary bits of audio.

After the editing is complete and the podcast is ready to be pushed online, it is uploaded to the Mustangs Ahead Soundcloud account, which is free for anyone to tune in and listen.

While students involved in podcasting are taking journalism classes, Murphy is quick to point out the differences between writing a story and talking about a story like they do in podcasts.

“The difference to me is that it’s a little more difficult,” Murphy said. “I only say this because when you’re writing and you have a quote, you can paraphrase and finesse it. But with podcasting, all you have is the audio, so you hope whoever you’re interviewing is well-spoken.”

Dasovich, a junior, had a hand in creating the ICYMI (In Case You Missed It) podcast.

Dasovich said she likes to get personal with her stories, and ICYMI provides her the platform to do so. The program includes stories or ideas from students, teachers or sponsors about something that may have happened in the past.

“Students in here write a lot of stories, but I think podcasts are more personal,” Dasovich said.

“You get to hear people’s voices, and I am definitely more comfortable talking than I am writing.”

So far, Dasovich has been able to find touching stories around campus.

Her favorite, though, was an interview with a member of the school’s instructional staff.

“I recently did a story on a teacher that had cancer,” Dasovich said. “It felt so personal.”

Darya Fedotova understands ballet might not be at the top of must-do lists for busy people.

But, as director and owner of the School of Russian Ballet, Fedotova wants art lovers to experience its brand of entertainment when the annual Grand Ovation event gets underway Feb. 4 on Main Street at Lakewood Ranch.

The event is in its 10th year.

“Ballet is a big part of the arts world, and we try to be involved in the community and show people our dances,” Fedotova said.

“When you watch it, it’s relaxing, beautiful music and nice movements. We are part of this community, and it’s good knowledge to see ballet.”

The School of Russian Ballet will be performing at the event for the sixth year in a row. More than 20 dancers will be performing scenes from “The Little Mermaid,” “The Nutcracker” and “The Snow Queen,” in addition to contemporary and classical solos.

Fedotova said her students are thrilled to be performing.

“The kids love Ovation,” Fedotova said. “For them, it’s one of their best times because they like the audience and how everyone is really close, and they like talking

to the audience afterward.”

Berry Ayers, musical director for The Players Kids of The Players Centre for Performing Arts, said his students enjoy the chance to showcase their talent.

“It gives us a chance to perfect what we do, and it puts the kids in front of an audience,” Ayers said.

“They get lots of benefits, such as help with their public speaking.

Also returning to Grand Ovation is the Lakewood Ranch High School Theater Club. Students will be performing a number of pieces from different musicals.

Hearty to healthy School lunches today may look similar to the past, but the difference is what they’re missing.

KEY MOMENTS IN SCHOOL LUNCH HEALTH

The old school lunch, it’s not what it use to be.

Gone are the deep fryers, the white flour and processed food.

Instead, students are served more nutritious breakfasts and lunches, offerings Manatee County School District cafeteria employees say taste better, too.

In fact, the menu is so good that students often don’t notice that what they are eating is actually good for them, said Patty Lee, cafeteria manager at Gilbert W. McNeal Elementary School for the past 13 years.

“We served doughnuts to kids back in the day,” Lee said.

“Now, we have this thing called the Superround. It looks like a doughnut. It is slightly sweet, whole grain and fortified, so it has a bunch of vitamins in it. But the kids don’t know that.”

Regina Thoma, director of food and nutrition for the school district, said former President Barack Obama’s 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act brought about even more change by setting new standards for nutrition.

Since the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act passed, school districts across the nation are limited by dietary restrictions in terms of what they can serve.

These requirements include reductions in sodium, a reduction in the percentage of calories from saturated fat and a significant increase in fiber. A reduction in calcium selected and consumed was also considered, according to a study by the Journal of Child Nutrition and Management.

As a result, Manatee County schools became more creative when putting together menus.

They eliminated fried foods and all white flour.

Pizza, for example, a longtime favorite of students, is still served but now with a whole grain crust, low-sodium sauce and low-fat cheese.

Just like the pizza, much of the food Manatee County schools have been serving for decades is still available in school lunches, albeit with different ingredients.

When Lee was a cafeteria manager at Tara Elementary School in the early 2000s, there was a fryer in the kitchen. Now, all fryers — at elementary, middle and high schools — have been removed.

Lee said, from her 18 years of experience, students have more food choices today.

“There is a lot more variety of fruits and vegetables that not many kids were exposed to before,” Lee said. “There is something that everyone likes. The kids

love the chicken tenders (hand breaded and baked as opposed to fried) and especially the sidekicks, which is (like) an Icee, but it’s 100% fruit juice.”

The McNeal Elementary School cafeteria staff serves its students sidekicks only once a month. The slushy comes in three flavors — blue raspberry, lemon mango and strawberry kiwi.

Starting two years ago, the school district launched its free breakfast program, for which

every student enrolled in a Manatee County school is eligible. The breakfast menus are diverse.

“There are more choices eggwise for students than there was a while back,” Lee said. “We have this new scrambler that has eggs, cheese and bacon, and the kids love it. I don’t think that sort of stuff was around back then.”

Lee also remembers in the early 2000s, when her cafeteria staff used to make rolls from scratch.

“The rolls used to be handmade

by us with yeast, flour (white) and eggs. It was a ton of work,” Lee said. “Now, we use frozen rolls that we put in the warmer for about 10 minutes. They’re whole grain, and the other rolls I used to serve were definitely not whole grain.”

Jessica Anderson, marketing and communications specialist for Manatee County Food and Nutrition Services, can remember some of the items served in her school lunches back when she was a student. She said school lunches have “come a long way.”

“We are definitely more restricted, of course,” Anderson said. “And that is judging from when I was a kid in school, it was French-fry city back then. So yes, in terms of health, we have come

a long way.”

The school district still serves French fries, tater tots and even curly fries, but they are all baked — not fried.

In addition to various nutritional changes, the district is working to educate the students about nutritional food choices.

The Nutrislice program, instituted three years ago, is an application that can be downloaded on Google Play, Android and iOS devices. Students and parents can see what is on the menu that day at any school in Manatee County.

“It is really a great tool for parents,” Anderson said. “You can choose your school, look at the breakfast or lunch of the month, insert your child’s food allergies or restrictions, and ultimately

make sure that kids are eating what they need to eat.”

Digital signage is another feature the district has recently installed in county middle schools and high schools.

Upper level schools have flatscreen televisions around campus displaying the featured food items for the week. Also included on the TVs are “smart facts.”

Carlos E. Haile Middle School has digital signage screens scattered throughout the cafeteria. It just had the video screens added during the renovation of the cafeteria, which was recently completed.

So far, Haile principal Sharon Scarborough said the digital screens are a wonderful addition to the cafeteria.

“It really gives the students more information,” Scarborough said. “It shows them goals for nutrition in a creative way, and lists information about how they can learn more about what they are eating, which is great information for them to be seeing while they are here in the cafeteria.”

NOT-SO-MASTERFUL THIEF 7300 block of 52nd Place East, Bradenton Fraudulent use of credit card: Deputies were summoned to a bank when a suspect attempted to get a $900 cash advance on a Visa card. The card was issued in the name of Aaron Smith. A bank employee recognized the man from a bulletin he received from another branch. The employee delayed the man by saying his computer link was down. When deputies arrived, the man identified himself as Aaron Smith. He presented what was suspected to be a bogus Ohio driver’s license.

Officials said the license had been issued to a woman. The man also couldn’t answer questions about his birth date or address, though the photo on the license was him.

The deputy told the man he was being detained for an investigation into the crime. Asked about his real name, he told deputies, “It’s on the ID.” Deputies removed a wallet from his back pocket and it contained a debit card with his actual name on it. He was taken

Hunter Reed has battled illness this year, but should be recovered and ready to compete in the state tournament.

WEIGHTING GAME After not making the weight limit at the 2016 regionals, star Lakewood Ranch wrestler seeks redemption.

unter Reed was sick, and there was nothing he could do about it.

It was the morning of Feb. 26, 2016, and the Lakewood Ranch High School wrestler, then a junior, had decided not to weigh in at the Class 3A Region 2 meet.

He knew he would have exceeded his 120-pound limit if he had.

Instead, he met his teammates in the lobby of their hotel in Kissim-

mee and let them know his season was over.

“Letting the guys know, I knew they understood how much I was cutting weight,” Reed said. “They knew what kind of toll it did on my body. They were really understanding. But it did hurt me not being able to go through region-

It was not just Reed who was affected. Reed’s father, Kraig Reed, was an assistant coach for the team, said that two other wrestlers who qualified through the district tournament fell ill during the week in between and were unable to compete. Three of Lakewood Ranch’s six wrestlers who did make weight were still battling illnesses, and as a result, only one Mustang, Dylan Cameron, advanced to the state tournament.

None of the other wrestlers affected by the illness had Reed’s resume, though. He was 62-0 entering the regional tournament and ranked No. 2 in the state. All those wins and all the hard work that went into them were for

naught, all because of a bug that hit at the wrong time.

“We sat at the state tournament and watched the kids that were competing, and we all knew he would have won that tournament,” Kraig Reed said. “It was particularly difficult for us to know how close it was.”

Hunter Reed was determined not to let the setback shake him. After the state tournament wrapped up, Reed headed to the 2016 National High School Coaches Association Nationals, one of the biggest tournaments in the country, and finished in the top eight. This gave Reed confidence going into the rest of the offseason, and that confidence has carried into his senior year.

“Not being able to wrestle last year and having such a good opportunity, it makes it so much more important this year,” Reed said. “Make sure I’m healthy, make sure everything is working and I’m not hurt. That way I can go into the state run fully healthy and have the best opportunity that I can.”

Reed’s record this year sits at 26-1 wrestling at 132 pounds, although he has run into some of the same illness issues as last year, missing the past two weeks with the flu. Fortunately for Reed, it should be out of his system entirely now, and he can prepare for the run to states that he was unable to make last year.

Reed said he typically has no problem cutting weight, as long as he has a few weeks’ notice and the amount of weight cut is not too drastic. He does not like to cut more than 15 pounds for a match, because he then would be cutting into his muscle, which is unhealthy.

To help with the cutting, the Reed family has supported him by not allowing any sugar into its house. That is something Hunter Reed has done his entire career, and it helps him avoid any temptations he may have.

“Sodas, any unnecessary sugars like sugary cereal,” Reed said.

“We’ll switch to plain Cheerios and skim milk. My dad will tell everyone, ‘Do not bring sugar into this house. If you do, do not let me see it.’ He has really supported me in that way.”

Reed brings opponents pain inside the circle, but outside of it, he holds a temperament rarely seen in wrestlers, his father said.

“The funny thing is, he is a lover; he is not a fighter,” Kraig Reed said of his son. “Which is in direct conflict with the kind of personality you need to have inside the circle. If there has been anything difficult to sort of bring out in him, it’s that fighting ability, or that intensity that he has got to have on the mat. We have a term for him here in the house. We call him ‘peacemaker.’ Whenever there is tension in the house, he comes out and he jokes and tries to calm the situation, and he definitely does not like it. That might embarrass him, but at the same time, he knows.”

Peaceful as Hunter Reed may be in daily life, he works hard to be the best wrestler he can be. At the upcoming wrestling state tournament on March 3, Florida will find out if his story of redemption can come full circle.

Right time to feel power of DeSoto Speedway

T

he sound simply blitzes your eardrums, and that always has been part of the draw of auto racing.

Sheer power, sheer fun.

Then combine that with the fact, and it might not be the politically correct thing to say, there is something intoxicating about watching drivers strap themselves into potential death machines and fearlessly tempt fate.

And you can find that kind of entertainment right here at DeSoto Speedway.

I went to the track for the first time Jan. 28, and even during the warm-up session, was greeted with the hum of engines going full out as drivers tried to make last-minute adjustments.

Just the sparks flying out the back of the cars on each turn was a show within itself, and the vehicles were pushed so hard in the straightaways they would shake and swerve a bit.

The drivers would push their cars so hard, a few times on this particular night, they would be unable to launch themselves in a corner just right and would crash into the rusty fencing that surrounds the track. The speedway has multiple spots marked in yellow by the grandstands where spectators are advised not to loiter for that very reason.

Most of the accidents are of the minor variety, even if they don’t seem to be that way. The drivers at DeSoto are skilled

enough to know when something bad is going to happen, and they take appropriate action. It’s a quick decision when you consider the cars were completing the 3/8th-mile laps in less than 16 seconds.

The main events on this night carried quite the importance.

One such race was the track’s final sportsman race of the 2016 season (which bleeds into the

2017 season).

With a clean run in that race, Brooke Storer, the No. 9 car, had a realistic shot at the sportsman track championship. All she needed to do was finish ahead of Roger Welch, the No. 98 car, and she would take home the spoils.

As the green flag was waved to begin the race, Welch was the leader and the 18-year-old Storer was third. Two laps in,

the race came to a screeching halt when Rick Reed’s No. 4 car caught fire — literally. The crew on-hand scrambled to put it out, and did a fantastic job, but the incident caused a significant delay and knocked Reed out of the race.

On the restart, Storer took control of second place, just behind Welch, and bumped him, causing him to slow just enough.

She pulled in front of him on lap eight. It was a deft maneuver, one worth the price of admission to the group of fans to my left, who praised Storer’s driving the rest of the 50-lap race. Storer was never seriously challenged

by Welch once she passed him, and finished second, good enough to win the overall 2016 championship.

“I’m very excited and cannot thank my crew enough,” Storer said after the race. “It got emotional. We have had a lot go on in the past year, for the whole 2016 season. I think as a family we got stronger and closer. This is unbelievable for the Brooke Storer Motorsports team. I’m just so grateful, I can’t say that enough. I am very lucky to be in the position that I am.”

She is not the only lucky one.

With the roar of the engines, and the sparks and the crashes and the fires, the fans were treated to a great night of racing. With the 2017 having just begun, there’s plenty of time to check out more.

ne hundred and fifty Outof-Door Academy sophomores took to the trees to get out of their bubble.

On Jan. 26, those students were paired as buddies with 32 students from Easter Seals’ Vocational Introduction and Preparation Academy students during an outing at the TreeUmph! Adventure Course in Lakewood Ranch.

“A lot of us live in the same bubble every single day,” said ODA sophomore Maria Miller.

“Seeing stories outside of that bubble of ours is important, and it broadens our view of the world.”

The two schools were con-

tinuing a relationship that started eight years ago.

The objective of the partnership is to offer students an opportunity to support, encourage and learn about each other through a physical, emotional, or challenging experience in a controlled, safe setting.

TreeUmph! offered the safe, but challenging setting this year.

“It’s really scary getting up there, so we encourage each other through it,” said ODA sophomore Alex Assha said.

“This is such a good bonding exercise. We’re all going out of our comfort zone and making new friends. I hope that once

we leave here we can still be friends.”

The VIP Academy students have been diagnosed with physical, cognitive and/or emotional differences.

“Most of the kids have never done this (the adventure course),” said Don Herndon, director of the VIP Academy and Adults Programs at Easter Seals. “It’s important because a lot can be learned from different people, different cultures and in the differences between the two groups. Together, when communicating with each other, they can learn about each other’s lives.”

LWRBA welcomes new board

T

he Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance welcomed incoming chairwoman Lori Ruth, the associate publisher of the East County Observer, at its annual Membership Luncheon on Jan. 25 at the Polo Grill and Bar. Ruth takes over from outgoing chairman Darren Inverso of Norton, Hammersley, Lopez & Skokos, P.A. She will serve in her new post for a year.

“The challenge I have is that I am following such a great year,” Ruth said. “Membership is up. I need to keep everyone excited and engaged. We plan to have a big year with speakers and luncheons.”

Ruth said so many LWRBA members are successful, she just needs to tap into that success. “I need to find their inner leader,” she said.

Besides Ruth taking over as chairwoman, the luncheon served to welcome the 2017 board of directors. The overall group has 585 members.

More than 200 people attended the ceremony.

More than 200 women’s club members and guests attended the outing. The group enjoyed a potluck luncheon in the Polo Club Pavilion before watching the match. They enjoyed the Clydesdale wagon and divot stomping as well.

Club President Monika Templeman and Event Chair Jan Hasler helped hand out the trophies and awards following the match. Whiskey Pond was the winning team.

The Academy of United States Veterans, located in Fairfax, Va., hosted the Vetty’s Presidential Inaugural Ball and Awards in Washington, D.C., at the Hay-Adams Hotel on Jan. 20. Retired Marine Michael Jernigan, a SoutheasternGuide Dogs graduate and the co-founder of the organization’s veterans programs, was on hand to receive the Vetty Award. The Vetty recognizes the positive impact that the service dogs have on the lives of veterans and their families.

nificance for Jernigan, who was wounded by a roadside bomb in Iraq, which caused him to lose both eyes.

“This level of national recognition reinforces what we do at Southeastern Guide Dogs,” he said. “It reminds us that our mission is extraordinary, its application is on point and the accomplishment of that mission is truly life-changing for the veterans we serve. Sharpshooters crowned

by Knights The Knights of Columbus Council No. 13341 held its Youth Free Throw Contest on Jan. 22 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church.

The girls champion was 13-year-old Emilee Gately, while 13-year-old Kyle Sielnam won the boys competition. They moved forward to regional competition and had a chance to eventually advance to the state competition.

Boys and girls 9 to 14 were eligible for the contest.

Last year, more than 120,000 kids participated nationally in 3,600 local competitions.

“There is a need to help, and this need continues to grow as more boys and girls are reading below grade level,” said Ted Lindenberg, a Rotary member and founder of the Books for

Kids Program. “That’s what Books For Kids is doing. We now have 54 volunteers going into seven schools, two counties, 55 classrooms. We are reaching out to 1,100 boys and girls each month.”

Specially trained volunteers visit classrooms, read aloud a selected book and engage students in discussion to improve their concentration on reading and their listening comprehension skills.

Manatee County Superintendent Diana Greene will attend the luncheon along with the district’s principals.

After each volunteer’s visit, he or she distributes a book to each child to take home. The
