Safety first Lakewood Ranch Community Emergency Response Team member Debra Giaconia is shown above practicing the group’s victim rescue skills. Gov. Rick Scott sent a “thank you” note for the group being ready to assist this past summer during Hurricane Hermine and Hurricane Matthew. “I’m grateful for your dedication to helping your fellow Floridians to rebuild our beautiful community,” Scott wrote.

MANAGING EDITOR

I

t was a quiet, windy day in Summerfield Park, just perfect for a little girl and her pinwheel. Gianna Lesselroth would take off on a run, often sidetracked by some pretty flowers. She would stop to pick at a flower, then would get back to the task of watching her pinwheel spin. Then it would be off again on a run. Not far away, her mom, Marissa Lesselroth, kept an eye on her. Marissa Lesselroth has to appreciate the quiet moments, because most of the first four years of Gianna’s life have been anything but. SEE PAGE 8A

Jay Heater

Tara Motzenbecker and Gianna Lesselroth will be partners on the Miles for Miracles team in the Boston Marathon.

Groomed for greatness For Lakewood Ranch’s Mindy Towns, helping shelter pets is a snap. Or a snapshot, such as the shot above Towns posted on Facebook. Towns has been named an official “HeARTS Speak” photographer. The group is a global organization formed to increase the visibility of shelter pets. Professional photographers, like Towns, provide their services pro bono.
