New home for the holidays? The Lakewood Ranch Humane Society is wishing for a special gift for Christmas. It is hoping to find homes for Robin and Crinkle, pictured above. Both cats are short hair domestic cats. While the charge usually is $75, both cats can go to a new home for $37.50. Call 361-1071 for information or go to hslwr.org.

Are Manatee parks ahead of the field?
Race will have special ring In preparation for The Jingle 5K Run/Walk, which will take place on Lakewood Main Street Dec. 22, the volunteers at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center have been stringing bells into 2,000 sets of red and green shoe laces. Every runner will receive the laces. “Everybody will be running and jingling,” said Margo Diener, pictured above, who is a volunteer at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

If you drive to Lakewood Ranch Park on any given Saturday morning, the packed parking lot indicates the growing community appears to be overwhelming the parks system. County officials say standards developed over time through their own research and national studies would indicate the parks system is sufficient, on paper. In reality, it doesn’t seem to be the case. “We find that if we go by the standard, we’re ahead of the curve,” said John Osborne, Manatee County’s infrastructure and strategic planning official.
