Pet seal tests new waters JAY HEATER MANAGING EDITOR

D

uring a seminar break at Windsor Reflections Memory Care in Lakewood Ranch, a cuddly, stuffed animal attracted attention by laying on a table and batting its big, round eyes.

It would have been a sweet trick for any Hasbro toy.

Calling this one a toy, though, would be like comparing a Matchbox car to a Mercedes. It took only a couple of seconds for those in attendance to understand.

Nicknamed “Hope,” the stuffed, white seal seemed to be asking for attention. But when a camera with a flash tried to snap a few photos, Hope closed its eyes and buried its head.

Just an everyday, $6,000 stuffed animal ... one stuffed with technology.

“Hope has light and movement sensors,” said Sandra Petersen, one of three licensed robotic therapists in the United States. “It can see you, and it doesn’t like the flashing light.

“This device has artificial intelligence. It reads behavior. It thinks.”

Hope “thinks” as much as a pair of 32-bit central processing units allow, and it does store information to develop a personality. In short, Hope can tell a person to get that flashing light out of its face.

In contrast, a few loving strokes of Hope’s fur brings about a kind of seal purr, and creates an atmosphere of tranquility.

Petersen, a University of Texas -Tyler professor, has studied the resulting tranquility for the past three years and has found what she hopes is a major breakthrough in treating senior patients who battle memory diseases such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Her findings have been so encouraging, Windsor Reflections, operated by Legends Senior Living, purchased a Paro Robotic Seal and will gather data to help Petersen with her study.

Windsor Reflections hopes the result is a better life for its memory care patients. When the robotic seal arrived at Windsor, it was named “Hope.”

On Nov. 17, Windsor Reflections hosted Petersen’s seminar, Neuroplasticity and Biofeedback in Dementia, for about 25 medical health professionals. Petersen said only Windsor Reflections and another Legends Senior Living facility in Palm Coast are using the robotic seal in Florida.

“It brings about a nurturing behavior,” Petersen said of the seal. “It raises the serotonin level in the brain.”

Serotonin is thought to be a contributor to feelings of wellbeing.

Petersen said a national study has shown about 60% of those 65 and older who are living in senior care facilities suffer from depression. Depression blocks attempts to improve memory functions.

“We have seen the robotic seal has helped with depression, aggression and anxiety,” Petersen said. “It has helped people with their inability to communicate with the outside world.”

In her studies, Petersen encountered one patient who hadn’t spoken in six years. After several 20-minute sessions with the seal, that changed. “He began

talking to seal, saying ‘I love you,’” Petersen said.

Staff members at Windsor Reflections are intrigued.

“When I first looked at the seal, I thought, ‘It’s a stuffed animal,’” said Dawn Platt, a regional trainer for Legends Senior Living. “But then I saw how people reacted and interacted with it. I realized its potential to build relationships. Used on a routine basis, with environmental consistency, we feel it can build relationships, like someone’s favorite pet. We have seen it increase verbalization and decrease aggressive behavior.

It calms people.”

It only took a few moments during the seminar to understand.

Those in the medical field at the seminar broke into wide smiles as they passed Hope around the room.

“I want us to buy one,” said Michelle Orlando, the associate director of Bayada Home Health Care. “It would be huge if it leads to a reduction in medication.”

Petersen said the effect in terms of medication is undeniable.

“We have found it absolutely decreases the amount of psycho-active medication needed,” Petersen said. “It can reduce it by a third. That’s anti-anxiety drugs and anti-depression drugs.”

A few years ago, Petersen, now 62, was driving in Dallas when she began drooling. She suffered a stroke, and in the aftermath, she had difficulty recalling words and tapping into her language center.

“It was one of the best things that could have happened to me to help take care of seniors,” she said.

She said she understands the

problems and the frustrations her memory care patients encounter.

Now dedicating herself to helping seniors with memory challenges, Petersen is hoping more facilities adopt the robotic seal.

“The seal is a neutral animal, weighing about the same as a baby,” she said. “That transfers an immediate message, that this is something to be held and nurtured.”

The inventor originally designed a dog and a cat, and both failed miserably. “People have expectations of dogs and cats,” Petersen said.

Each seal has a life span of about 10 years, although Petersen said a new processing unit can be purchased to extend life.

It has light, movement and audio sensors from “whiskers to tail.” Its fur is infused with silver, which acts as an antibacterial agent.

The robotic seal is being used in 33 countries. Fewer than 100 are being used in the United States, and most of those are being used by the government.

“We tend to go to pills here first,” Petersen said.

Not everyone is completely sold on Hope.

Dr. Louis Soscia, a retired physician who lives in Lakewood Ranch, has been watching as his wife, Diana, has been treated for Alzheimer’s at Windsor Reflections, which introduced Hope to her in 20-minute sessions.

“They used it a few times, and she seemed to take to it,” Soscia said. “I think she enjoyed the experience, but I don’t know. I think it shows promise. This has been a new type of experience with no real trial situations. The parameters have not been set up.”

Whether Hope is successful, Soscia said he appreciates Windsor Reflections’ attempt to be innovative.

“They stay current with the modern world,” he said. “This is a good place. They are very caring.”

Hope is a ninth-generation model of the first seal Paro Therapeutic Robot designed. The robots have been in circulation since 2003 in Japan and Europe.

ABOUT HOPE The robot has tactile, light, audio, temperature and posture sensors.

Hope can change its behavior in a way the user prefers. Hope imitates the sounds of a baby harp seal.

INSIDE The robot has dual 32-bit processors, three microphones, 12 tactile sensors covering its fur, touchsensitive whiskers and a system of motors and actuators that move its limbs and body. Shibata designed it to respond to touch and eye contact.

The robot can learn to respond to its name. The interior design is so advanced and complicated, the robot is not allowed to travel on airplanes.

Rebecca Perra, the computer lab manager at Braden River Elementary, understands how important updated technology can be in the global race for education.

So when she walks through the school’s computer center, she is concerned.

“I call our news center computer the ‘2004 dinosaur’ because it’s older than my students, who are mostly in fifth grade. That’s kind of funny,” Perra said.

Perra can laugh because help is on the way.

When Manatee County voters passed the extension of the half-cent sales tax for schools, it assured the Manatee County School District will be able to identify schools in need of a technology update and then make the appropriate purchases.

“A lot of our curriculum is taught using technology,” Perra said. “To not have computers, I would think it would be debilitating to learning.”

Braden River Principal Hayley Rio said the half-cent sales tax has been key in providing her school with important upgrades in the past.

Now it is time for Braden River to get some upgrades.

Mike Barber, the director of communications for the school district, said half-cent sales tax funds will help construct the planned high school in Parrish, and also will lead to some priorities such as replacing air conditioning systems, roofs, carpet, security cameras and technology.

Barber said each school in the district has computers ranging from new to 7 years old. He said the oldest computers can be out of date to the point the school could not run the programs it needs. He said the voters have allowed the district to make sure the schools don’t fall into that trap.

The district has an Information Technologies department that does an inventory check of the schools to determine which are the highest priorities in terms of receiving new technology.

At Braden River Middle School, the district provided new desktop computers a year ago for its media center, but the school is in dire need of other technology upgrades.

Joanne Torlucci, a media specialist at Braden River Middle School, said the laptops students use in classrooms for interactive reading and math can’t hold a charge for the length of a school day.

Kristin Kreiling, the assistant principal at Braden River Middle, said the teachers have worked out solutions for the students to follow so the computers don’t get bogged down in terms of speed.

Upgraded, faster equipment would help.

“Using older computers in labs builds up frustration,” Kreiling said. “We would like to see more

laptops here so we can become more mobile, and see more interactive technology.”

The school district can now continue to supply that technology with the half-cent tax dollars continuing to produce funds. In the past two-and-a-half years, the district has distributed more than 19,000 new computers throughout the district.

The goal is to refresh computer devices in all 50 district schools every five years. The district has approximately 40,000 computers in its schools, according to Patrick Fletcher, the district’s chief information and technology officer.

At Haile Middle School, students already benefit from newly installed innovative technology classrooms. Those classrooms work as a model to see what is possible at other schools throughout the district.

“Teachers from all over the dis-

trict come in to see what would best fit their school,” said Haile Middle School Principal Sharon Scarbrough. “It’s a great trialand-error strategy. The students try everything out to see what works well for them.”

The classrooms include updated technology such as the Promethean board, Wobble stools, numerous big screens with interactive programs, headphone splitters and more.

Haile teachers Amy Bane and Tracy Bohlmann say they have seen progress.

“They (the school district) kind of used me as a guinea pig for this new technology,” said Bohlmann, an eighth grade science teacher. “But I really like everything, especially the collaboration tables because the students seem to work together more. When everything is up on a computer screen, I hear a lot more ideas being shared around the table, rather than one

Additionally, Bohlmann has found the new “lab disks,” a portable data collection device, to be particularly helpful.

“We can go outside and collect data on the humidity, the temperature and sound,” Bohlmann said.

Other teachers and administrators in the district are excited about the possibilities. Braden River Middle Principal Randall Petrillas said his school could see new SuccessMaker lab computers as early as this spring.

“I’m so glad the citizens of Manatee County are giving back to the schools and its students,” Petrilla said. “Sometimes when you put newer programs on old computers they’re sluggish, and the experience is not as good for the kids. If the current halfcent tax wouldn’t have passed, it would have been devastating.”

Closet stores students’ compassion Small school project embraces a giving spirit.

When a pair of Out-of-Door Academy eighth-grade students began a drive to raise money for charity in January, it was supposed to be no big thing.

After all, they thought, what could two Lakewood Ranch teenagers accomplish?

They had no idea.

Their idea to raise funds, the “Giving Closet,” already has touched more lives than they could have imagined. The girls collect clothing and other garagesale type items, then host thrift store type sales.

“So many good things have come out of this,” said Sydney Sforzo, now a ninth-grader at ODA’s Lakewood Ranch campus.

“It feels so good. You wouldn’t think your little thing at your little, private school could help other people so much.”

But it did.

Sforzo and her best friend, classmate and Giving Closet partner, Chelsea Lea, have gone full-speed since March in the effort to raise money for the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund at ODA. Emmons, an ODA graduate, died in 2010 after being struck by a car. His parents, Michael and Katherine Emmons, wanted to honor their son along with giving back to the school, so they started the scholarship fund.

The first sale netted $2,000 for

the fund and introduced the girls to their most interesting customer, Sarasota Realtor Tom Wentzel.

“I read about the sale in the paper,” said Wentzel, who works for Keller-Williams Realty. “I wanted to find out why they were doing it. It was going to a scholarship and I liked that. Then I met (Michael and Katherine Emmons) and you could see and feel their loss. They are such nice people.”

Wentzel packed his car with items from the sale, then drove to Resurrection House in Sarasota where he donated them. “He was a major help in our first sale,” Lea said. “We never expected that kind of thing.”

When the girls hosted their second sale Nov. 12 in Siesta Key, they hoped Wentzel would return.

He did.

“I arrived early and started grabbing shoes and clothes,” he said.

By the time he was finished, Wentzel ran up a $550 bill, then then donated another $100 to the girls’ program when he couldn’t stuff any more items into his Jeep.

“He spent two hours filling up baskets,” Sforzo said.

Wentzel said the girls sparked some memories of his own charity fundraisers when he was in high school in Crookston, Minn.

“I used to raise money with our football lettermen,” said Wentzel, who is 70. “We raised more than any other group.”

such an impression on him that he continued in later years.

“I joined the Peace Corps,” he said. “We went to Swaziland, Africa, and it changed my life.”

He said “The Giving Closet” also might make a big difference in the two Out-of-Door Academy students’ lives.

“I like to see young people dedicating their time to help others,” Wentzel said. “It’s what makes America great. As they learn, they will continue. That is wonderful.”

Sforzo and Lea said they will continue giving back after they leave high school.

For now, they want to help their project continue to grow.

They have donated $5,000 to the scholarship fund and they want to

beat that figure in 2017.

Besides helping the scholarship fund, the girls have been able to donate items to The Visible Men Academy, Mothers Helping Mothers and the Salvation Army.

The Resurrection House benefited through Wentzel’s participation. Lea said some buyers at the sales have sent their items to the relief effort in Haiti.

The effort has expanded in other ways. The first sale saw 10 volunteers work the event while 25 students were on hand for the second event.

About 50 ODA students are now volunteering to put on the event.

“We’ve learned a lot of leadership skills,” Sforzo said. “And

we’ve learned how to get students involved.”

It appears the students have some of the fundraising ability of Sforzo’s grandfather, Lakewood Ranch’s Dick Vitale, who raises money for pediatric cancer.

“He has helped me because he is such a great speaker and motivator,” Sforzo said. “I want to get people involved, get them that excited. He has taught me a lot.”

The girls, who have attended school together since first grade, are planning their next sale in March, again on the Lakewood Ranch campus.

“It has been crazy to see how people have helped with our sale,” Lea said. “It literally gives me the chills.”

Palm frond art signals a triumph for local resident after his heart attack.

Walking through David Skaggs’ Palm Aire home is much like touring a museum. Life-sized carousel horses, antique clocks and furniture and other unique items draw attention.

They are pieces his wife, Deborah Skaggs, keeps around until she’s ready to sell them at her consignment store.

But woven into the mix are David Skaggs’ own artistic creations. They include a variety of fish, birds and other wildlife sculptures that hang from walls and from the ceiling. They perch atop tables and stand from the floor.

At 54 years old, David Skaggs has found his life’s purpose in creating art with what most people consider trash — palm tree fronds.

“That high I feel making art is the same feeling as when I played competitive sports,” said David Skaggs, a collegiate springboard diver. “It’s that adrenaline rush.

That’s really what the art has given me back.”

He was a home remodeler when he suffered a massive heart attack in September 2013. Doctors told his wife he wouldn’t survive, but he did. The couple closed his business. He couldn’t work.

Depression gained its foothold.

About eight months after the heart attack, David Skaggs started working part time as a maintenance supervisor at Golf Pointe, a condo association within Palm Aire. He watched the crews trim palm trees and suddenly, one day, an idea came.

“I thought, ‘Hey, I can make a fish out of that,’” David Skaggs said. “I started putting them aside.”

Deborah smiled.

“He was bringing them home

by the truckload,” she said.

He made a table lamp first.

Then, fish and other animals.

David Skaggs pointed to a floor lamp much like the first table lamp he created. From a 3-foot-tall basket emerges a bloom, its green leaves tipping over the sides with a yellow calla lily bloom shooting upward from the center. Creating this piece is what triggered his palm frond obsession.

“This lamp started it,” David Skaggs said. “This is what God showed me.”

At first, he’d excitedly pulled the palm frond pieces together, but didn’t secure them. Deborah Skaggs thought the piece lacked balance. Trying to fix it, he caused the lamp to collapse. He was frustrated and angry.

“Later that night I was staring at it, and it was like I was looking over myself doing it and all of a sudden all of the pieces fell into place,” David Skaggs said. “I got it all done and it looked like this right here. God made my hands do it.”

“That was the beginning,” Deborah Skaggs said. “Then it went wild.”

The couple’s Palm Aire home slowly transformed into a storage space for David’s finished and unfinished work. Empathetic to David’s depression, Deborah obliged, pretending the piles of fronds and unsorted messes didn’t bother her.

“He was so depressed,” she said with a shrug. “Anything to give him happiness back.”

He created lamps, fish, birds and other creatures, working on several pieces at a time. He waited six months to find the perfect pieces for the alligator he envisioned and recently completed.

Key Beach. When he saw them, he couldn’t contain his excitement.

“My pockets were stuffed like a chipmunk,” he said.

David Skaggs also is proud of his mermaid, modeled after Kim Kardashian and “those hips.” She is more than 7 feet tall. Her head is made from a crushed mannequin head he bought, her body covered in scales made from rubber tree leaves and Siesta Key Beach shells. She took about a year to finish.

“She took a lot of time because she has a lot of elements,” he said.

Currently, he’s working on what he calls a “golf octopus,” a giant octopus with tentacles grasping golf clubs. It’s a work in progress on the Skaggs’ lanai.

Deborah Skaggs said the art has given her husband his life back.

Now he channels his focus, excitement and passion into each piece, whether large or small.

Those pieces go to Deborah Skaggs’ internet resale and consignment business, Dray’s Gallery, although David Skaggs does commissioned pieces, as well.

Most pieces cost a minimum of $250.

During the past three years, David Skaggs, who does business as Dave’s World Art, has created more than 150 one-of-a-kind pieces. More than 40 of them hang from walls, sit on coffee tables or stand on the floor of the couple’s home.

Deborah Skaggs said she’s ready to have her house back.

With friends headed over for the holidays, he will have to limit his collection to four pegs on a wall of their living room. The lanai must be transformed from a jungle of palm fronds to something more presentable.

David Skaggs shrugged. “She takes good care of me,” he said.

Sometimes he paints or stains them.

Sometimes, he burns in designs. He attaches shell, rocks and leaves and finally covers the entire piece with a resin to hold it together.

Take the tour to really explore Lakewood Ranch

rom the first day I arrived in Lakewood Ranch, I have been told the same thing about Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

They do things the right way.

I’m sure we all have those days when the master plan isn’t so masterful, or when the interests of the many conflict with No. 1. Many of us probably are wondering if Lakewood Ranch Boulevard is going to turn into a parking lot when more homes and light industrial businesses head our way.

We have to take some solace, though from SMR’s credo. Do things the right way.

I was given another example in unexpected fashion last week.

During the Tour of Homes promotion, SMR offered several “behind-the-scenes” tours of Lakewood Ranch, or a close look at the working part of the Ranch. It was a free tour, open to anyone willing to venture to the University Parkway Information Center.

Our tour guide was SMR Farms President Gary Bradshaw, who probably didn’t spend his previous 19 years with SMR brushing

What do many of us think of when we hear Lakewood Ranch?

Probably nice homes. Maybe a Main Street area with some terrific restaurants. Perhaps even the lakes and ponds.

Mining, citrus production, turf and tree farming and cattle ranching probably don’t burst forward, and that’s OK. As the future unfolds, the working part of the ranch will slowly be plowed under by construction.

Tomato fields turn into soccer fields and flat cow pastures become rolling golf courses.

Eventually, even Bradshaw’s job is likely to disintegrate into the housing landscape, but that’s way too far down the road for him to worry.

For now, it’s obvious he loves his role behind the scenes.

With 30,000 acres, SMR still has plenty of area behind those scenes. Our tour bus took us to the mining area, which is shutting down now, but not before piling mountains of stored shell rock for the extensions of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Lorraine Road toward Fruitville and for the lengthening of Deer Road.

Why would an SMR executive spend his time spouting facts and figures for a group of people, most of whom already own a home in Lakewood Ranch?

It’s about doing things the right way.

The normal business model would call for a public relations person to handle the tour.

Instead, we got Bradshaw.

“I guess, mainly, I know the information,” Bradshaw said.

“It’s just part of the job.

“And I like it.”

The tour was scheduled for 60 minutes and it turned into almost two hours. Nobody complained, either, as they soaked up Bradshaw’s knowledge.

The tour itself should be a must for anyone who either lives in Lakewood Ranch, or has thoughts of moving here.

It is offered during the Tour of Homes every fall, but you can check at a Lakewood Ranch information center for future tours.

We drove past Heritage Ranch, a 2,500-acre conservation area inside Lakewood Ranch that never will be developed.

Bradshaw talked about the wild turkeys we saw, and the deer. He talked about the palm trees being grown for sale, beautiful oak trees that aren’t for sale, and the various grasses that line lawns and golf courses.

Of the 965 1/2 acres of oranges on the Ranch, only 50 acres are used for fresh fruit produce.

Most of the remaining acreage goes into juice. Who knew?

We passed a marshy area that Bradshaw called a natural filtration system. He talked about SMR’s dedication to best management practices as it applies to water quality.

Attorney steers conservation effort Volunteer of the Year award goes to local attorney.

ill Creek’s Alyssa Nohren wrapped up her duties as an attorney rather succinctly.

“If you own dirt, or if you want to own dirt, I can help you,” said Nohren with a big smile.

The 2016 winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award by The Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast was standing in her office at Lakewood Ranch’s Icard Merrill, where she has been a shareholder since 2006.

An expert in real estate law with an emphasis on real estate transactions and litigation, Nohren has a lot rolling around in her professional wheelbarrow.

Still, she made time to work more than 100 hours this year in philanthropic legal support to ensure the protection of the Triangle Ranch in Manatee County.

The ranch, located at 30303 Clay Gully Road, Myakka City, has been considered an eco-sensitive land by The Conservation Foundation, which hoped to see

it through a change in ownership while finding a way to permanently make the ranch a wildlife sanctuary.

With Nohren’s help, a sale closed Oct. 5 with new Triangle Ranch owner Elizabeth Moore taking over the 1,143-acre property knowing 1,005 of the acres were an easement by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Only 37 acres would be considered working acreage.

“The Conservation Foundation has been working on this for three years and I’ve been involved the last two years,” Nohren said.

“It’s nothing like I’ve ever worked with before. I’ve done pro bono and philanthropic work, but in this case, we had to gather all the members of the Carlton family ... mom, dad, children, cousins ... and get them all to agree to do this. It was five parcels.”

Tony and Leila Carlton of Bradenton were the primary owners along with six other family members. Nohren gathered all the necessary signatures.

“Then the buyer had to agree to the deed restrictions,” she said.

“The property sold for $5.5 million.”

She said she enjoyed the process. “I felt I was doing something for the greater good,” she said.

the Gulf Coast, called Nohren’s contribution “fantastic.”

“It took hundreds of hours of legal help to save this ranch,” Johnson said. “She gave us her legal mind. This was a combination of the public, private and nonprofit sectors coming together. It was different.”

Now she has worked on a conservation project, Nohren said it is likely she will be involved in

more conservation efforts in the future. She said this particular project will help keep a home for the Florida panther and the crested caracara among 120 species of birds and animals that call Triangle Ranch home.

“I didn’t do this to win an award,” Nohren said. “It seemed like the right thing to do. It’s something that is forever. This was a very happy ending.”

Joy Wetherington has seen firsthand how a Christmas tree can change a life.

At her former church in Homestead, Fla., a sale of trees raised enough money for a family to adopt a second child from Ethiopia.

Now, she’s helping bring that same program, called Buy a Tree, Change a Life, to the 102-year-old RiverLife Church, in East County, with the goal of impacting children.

“I think generally people want to help kids and it’s a way to give back, not only globally because there’s such a need across the world, but it allows local churches to help locally,” said Wetherington, RiverLife’s social media director and site director for the Buy a Tree, Change a Life program.

All money collected is invested in two programs — one global and one local.

Globally, proceeds benefit People for Caring and Learning, a nonprofit that supports children’s homes, education, sustainable farming and other issues.

Locally, Wetherington and RiverLife pastor Jerry Jeter have selected Feeding Empty Little Tummies as a beneficiary. The

“There was a family in our church who had adopted a little girl from Ethiopia and they wanted to adopt her older sister because their mother was very very ill,” said Wetherington, who served as that church’s children’s pastor for five years.

Information only: A woman called the Sheriff’s Office to say her family had told her they were calling her home phone but it would just ring six times and then give a message that the voice mail had not been set up. The woman contacted her communications company, which sent her to another communications company. She was then told her phone number had been “taken.” The woman said she had not given permission to take the number. She was told to file a police report and they would investigate further.

Feast for salvation Salvation Army’s menu is often made possible by local restaurants.

With gloved hands, chef Kendell Emmanuel scooped up chunks of freshly cooked steak and bagged it for the freezer.

But that food won’t be available for another of his recipes.

In just a few days, the steak could be on a plate feeding the area’s hungry or homeless.

Each day, Capital Grille hand cuts and marinates steaks, preps fresh vegetables and side dishes and other foods for customers.

But if anything goes unused, it’s never wasted.

Rather than throwing the food away, kitchen employees cook up the leftovers, then cool and freeze it for donation to the local Salvation Army.

“This is the first time I’ve worked for a company that does something like this,” Emmanuel said. “It’s an awesome program.”

than two years ago, Capital Grille has donated about 15,500 pounds of food — the equivalent of about 13,000 meals — to the Salvation Army, Capital Grille Managing Partner Tim Fanning said.

The Salvation Army picks up frozen food three days a week.

Each collection is different. Some days, there are freshly cooked lobster, fillets of steak, chicken or fish with a variety of side items, such as baked potatoes, creamed spinach or dinner rolls.

Fanning said the restaurant doesn’t purposefully create waste, but it sees this “harvest” program as one simple way it can benefit the community.

“It’s a big deal for us,” Fanning said. “We take it very seriously.”

Another restaurant at the mall, Seasons 52, also donates its unused, prepared foods to the Salvation Army. Since opening, it has donated 3,400 pounds of food.

“We want to give back,” Sales and Marketing Manager Sinead Magennis said. “We have a lot of food here, and we don’t want it to go to waste.”

“We really believe that a program like this is unique and positive,” added the restaurant’s managing partner, Alex Elshimy. “It helps us address significant social issues in the community.”

Both restaurants are part of Darden Restaurants, a national chain that owns brands such as Longhorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze. The company, overall, encourages its eateries to donate

unused food. In the Sarasota/ Manatee area, its two Olive Garden restaurants have donated more than 148,000 pounds collectively (restaurants opened in 1986 and 1988). And its two Longhorn Steakhouse locations (Fruitville Road and Gulf Gate, in Sarasota), both of which opened in 2008, have together donated more than 105,703 pounds to the same cause, a company spokesperson said.

Glenda Leonard, development director for Sarasota’s Salvation Army, said local restaurants and food providers, including Yoder’s, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Chipotle, Cheesecake Factory, Gordon Foods and Whole Foods, among others, contribute about half of the food used by the Sarasota Salvation Army to feed more than 600 meals a day, on average.

Food banks provide the other half, for a total of about $2.85 million in in-kind donations each year.

“We get everything from meat to dry goods and pastries,” said Tricia Jarent, the Salvation Army’s food service manager.

“Every donation is important. I plan the menu around what we get.”

Leonard agreed.

“We couldn’t do it without the individual restaurants,” she said.

“It’s almost like the other lists provide variety and items not available through the food banks.

One without the other would not make a very satisfying meal experience.”

The Mall at University Town Center recently made two upper-level management changes.

Amy Grundman, a strategic communication manager for The Taubman Co., which operates the mall, confirmed The Mall at UTC is seeking a new general manager and marketing sponsorship director.

As of Friday, general manager Octavio Ortiz and marketing sponsoring director Kim Dominguez were no longer with

the mall.

Asked about replacements, Grundman wrote in a text “A seasoned management team of two Taubman employees are in place for the interim to help with the transition.”

Ortiz managed the mall since its opening in October 2014.

Ortiz had been in charge of all shopping center operations as well as retailer and community relations.

One passenger in the car with Alliano, 18-year-old Taylor Brianne Johnson of Bradenton, suffered minor injuries. Another passenger, a 17-year-old from Myakka City, suffered no injuries.

The other vehicle had no passengers.

The Florida Highway Patrol report stated Alliano was driving eastbound in the center through lane. Shore’s car was stopped facing north on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard in the outside left turn lane with a red traffic signal. Both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time and collided.

akewood Ranch High School senior LaDazhia Williams is a basketball nut, both in her soul and in her soles.

Williams is a self-proclaimed “sneaker head.” She started her collection of basketball shoes, filled mostly with Nike Jordans, in eighth grade. Now, she has so many pairs that she would not even venture a guess at the exact number. At the moment, her favorite pair is a white-and-gold set of Jordans.

Williams’ mother, Chanel Griffin, offered a more biting answer.

“Too many,” Griffin said of her daughter’s basketball shoes. “We can’t go to the mall without buying a pair.”

Williams might even have to earn a WNBA salary to keep up with her shoe spending habits.

Thankfully for her, she just might.

The 6-foot-4 forward, anointed a top-50 high school player in the country by ESPN, has been blessed with rare talent. Last season, she averaged 15.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game for the Mustangs.

She got off to a solid start this season, scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds in Lakewood Ranch’s season-opening 73-25 home win against Riverview while not playing in the fourth quarter.

It appears she has few worries this season.

After being courted by most of the nation’s top college basketball programs, she chose the University of South Carolina in September.

Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks head coach, runs a system similar to Mustangs coach Tina Hadley, and Williams said she felt at home when she stepped on South Carolina’s campus.

Her college announcement ended a contentious recruiting process.

“It’s more relaxing now,” Williams said. “No more phone calls.”

Williams, Griffin and Hadley all used the word “goofy” to sum up Williams’ personality. Hadley laughed and shook her head when talking about her star player.

“She’s like a big kid,” Hadley said. “She just likes to have fun all the time, except when it is time to get serious in practice. She’s a free spirit.”

Ironically, neither Griffin nor Hadley could recall a specific instance of Williams doing something silly. It’s more of a constant vibe.

Williams was asked to recall a time she laughed the hardest.

“I laugh really hard every day,” Williams said. “I like to laugh and make others laugh.”

At South Carolina, she wants to major in criminology and criminal justice, specifically the forensic science field. Her favorite high school subject is anatomy.

At night, she enjoys watching TV shows like “CSI: Miami” and getting caught up in the mystery of it all. Solving those mysteries in real life is something she would love to do.

Like other sports fans, she has athletes she loves to watch compete. Candace Parker of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm are two of her heroes. All stand the same height and play the same position. Parker and Stewart were the first overall picks in their respective draft classes. Williams is working hard

to make sure she follows in their footsteps.

Williams’ rise in girls basketball almost never happened. Griffin said her daughter did not play sports as a child. When Williams was in fifth grade, she came to her mother and asked if she could try basketball. By the time Griffin rearranged her schedule to be able to take her to practice, Williams was in sixth grade.

One year into her basketball career, Williams joined Next Level Hoops, a program run by Hadley.

“When she first walked into the gym, I knew she was athletic,” Hadley said. “She was tall and uncoordinated, but I was like, ‘That girl has some potential.’ She just had to mature.”

Venice eliminates blank and blue Pirates

B

raden River senior running back Raymond Thomas said his mind was blank, but it wasn’t.

In the aftermath of the Pirates’ season-ending, 64-42 loss to host Venice Nov. 18, he managed to find his words despite the heartbreak.

“I don’t know what’s going through my mind,” Thomas said after rushing for 113 yards and three touchdowns while catching three passes for 65 yards.

“I’m going to remember it all.

“I’ve been through so much with this team. Torn ACL (last season), coming back and playing with these guys. It’s what I loved doing.”

Thomas arrived at Braden River in head coach Curt Bradley’s second season, when the Pirates went 5-4. In the following three seasons, Braden River lost just one regular season game and last year went to the final four of the state.

The Pirates won’t get that opportunity this season, and the graduating Thomas won’t get another chance.

“It’s over,” Thomas said before walking off the field.

Thomas’ senior teammates felt the same, unable to absorb the tremendous overall success of the program on an unsuccessful night.

“They did a little bit of everything,” Braden River coach Curt Bradley said of the Venice offense. “Their offensive line did a great job of getting up to the second level, covering up our linebackers. Obviously, they have some skilled ballplayers that were getting loose out there.”

Braden River finished its season 9-2.

Quarterback Louis Colosimo was not around for the early struggles like Thomas. He transferred from IMG Academy to Braden River just before

this season for a chance to be a starter. He made the most of his opportunity, putting up bigger and better numbers as the season progressed. For someone who made a lot of memories in a short amount of time, the pain of losing hit deep.

“It’s just hard, you know?”

Colosimo said. “We really came together so well. We worked our tails off. We put so much into it.

It hurts. It’s over.

“I wouldn’t want to spend my senior year anywhere else.”

Colosimo said he’ll never forget the relationships he created with both his teammates and the

coaching staff during his time at the school.

The future at Braden River is still bright. Next season, running back Deshaun Fenwick, defensive back Tyrone Collins and linebacker Chase Knopf will be seniors. Freshman tight end Travis Tobey played well this year, and I expect him to grow into a nightmare matchup for defenses.

As long as Bradley and offensive coordinator Eric Sanders are steering the Pirates’ ship, they will find success.

None of that hope will immediately heal the wounds inflicted by the Venice loss or console the departing seniors. For many of them, this will be the end of their competitive football careers.

It’s a tough thing, leaving behind what you love. Despite the heartbreak, these seniors saw unparalleled overall success, and that is something they can take with them.

“This is the winningest fouryear group of guys that we’ve had (at Braden River),” Bradley said. “Went to the playoffs three times in four years. All the credit to those guys. I’m extremely proud of those young men.”

elicia Seedorf, the managing director of Chapman & Associates Real Estate Appraisers, thought the best part of her day Nov. 13 would be mingling and eating turkey at Polo Grill and Bar during the 2016 Sandies Members’ Choice Awards luncheon in Lakewood Ranch.

Although surprised, Seedorf had a hunch why she won.

More than 250 Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance members and their guests gathered in the Fête Ballroom to recognize their top members.

A pool of 47 finalists were selected by their peers through an online voting process. The winners were chosen based on their levels of personal and professional achievement. The goal of the ceremony is to honor volunteers for devoting their time and compassion to the community.

“The Sandies is such a special event for our organization,” said Heather Kasten, the LWRBA executive director. “It’s a day for us to pause and genuinely celebrate and recognize outstanding leaders and volunteers within our organization. T

he B.D. Gullett second- and third-graders who performed in the annual concert Nov. 15 looked like they were having a great

time.

But they didn’t have as good a time as those watching.

“It was so fun,” said 11-year-old Tyler Green, a Gullett student who was a spectator at the concert. “My favorite part was all of it, and I really liked the turkey song.”

The third-graders were dressed in red, white and blue and they sang patriotic songs. The second-graders followed with a cowboy theme.

“There was so much energy in there, and people were packed from wall to wall,” said Tim Hamand, Gullett’s music teacher. “It was amazing to see so many parents participating and supporting our school.”
