Reconnected David Dillard’s two-month search has ended.

Riding his bicycle in August on Portal Crossing in Lakewood Ranch, Dillard found a plastic bin filled with hundreds of family photos.

Since then, he has been determined to find out to whom they belong.

One day after The Observer published “Have you seen us?” in an Oct. 22 issue, the Corradinos were found.

The family was moving from East County and on the way back from a storage unit when the box of photos fell off a trailer.

Mark Corradino met with Dillard last week. “I really appreciate him finding us,” Corradino said. “We’re lucky he took the time.”

Paving the way for growth Metropolitan Planning Organization’s plan for better transportation doesn’t leave out East County.

raffic. It’s one of the problems the Sarasota/Manatee Met-

ropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) hopes will be addressed by a plan that has been discussed over for the last 18 months.

To help ease congestion and meet the demands of a growing population, the MPO has been working with the Long Range Transportation Plan Steering Committee and Renaissance Planning Group on an update to its 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan.

The Manatee County Commission reviewed an update of that plan at its Oct. 20 meeting.

The MPO approved its the final draft to go out for pubic comment, and it will vote on the plan, also known as the Strategic Mobility Plan, in mid-December.

The projects are federally and state funded, from revenues of gas taxes, trust funds and other means, said Nick Lepp, project manager with Renaissance Planning Group.

The slated East County projects include a widening from two lanes to four on Upper Manatee River Road, from Fort Hamer Road to State Road 64, with more space included for bicyclists and other multimodal needs. Multimodal roads accommodate bicycles, pedestrians, fire rescue vehicles, trucks and other transportation means other than cars.

“We’re creating roads for multiple means of transportation,” said Lepp. “There’s no more two- or four-lane roads with no sidewalks, shoulders or spaces for people to walk or ride bikes.

That’s not consistent with the

future of roadwork. We’re building more than the asphalt.”

Estimated cost for the project is $57.6 million.

The other project, which Lepp has noted to be the more controversial one, includes widening Honore Avenue from two lanes to four, from University Parkway to 17th Street, with multimodal options as well.

“Residents have said they don’t want more lanes there,” Lepp said. “They think it’s going to bring more traffic. But Honore is a big road; it runs down to Venice.

But it’s that, ‘Not in my backyard,’ mentality. If you build it, more people will come.”

An Honore Avenue expansion is slated to cost $63 million.

The projects are part of the financially feasible project list, or projects that are of high importance and are realistic to fund, Lepp said.

The plan, which has to be updated every five years, earmarks projects to be funded by state and federal governments.

Construction on the projects would begin between 2020 and 2040.

That worries District 5 Commissioner Vanessa Baugh, who said the 2040 deadline is too far in the future.

“I don’t know that we can wait that long for some of these projects,” Baugh said. “We’re growing out east. So is our county and state.”

Much of the growth in the East County area is in terms of population.

Employment growth is a different story. Over the next 20 years, the MPO is forecasting a lack of employment growth east of I-75, while people continue to move to East County. That means residents will be driving out of the area to work.

Lepp said that combination increases the need for roadwork.

“More commuting means more drivers on the roads,” Lepp said.

“A goal of this transportation plan is congestion management and to provide safety and security in local transportation.”

LOCALLY FUNDED PROJECTS The state and federally funded 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan projects aren’t the only transportation improvements slated for Manatee and Sarasota counties.

The counties’ governments are funding local projects, as opposed to the federally and statefunded projects listed in the Long Range Transportation Plan. The counties will use impact and mobility fees and developer contributions to fund the projects.

The projects will help alleviate congestion on high-traffic East County roads before Long Range Transportation Projects are underway. The locally funded projects work hand-in-hand with the Long Range Transportation Plan projects.

“These local projects set the stage for what we’re trying to do,” said Nick

Lepp, project manager with Renaissance Planning Group, the company working with MPO on the Long Term Transportation Plan.

All road work slated for East County includes improvements that will incorporate more room for bicyclists, pedestrians and other forms of transportation other than cars.

Projects include widening 27th Street East from two lanes to four; creating a new two-lane road for Rangeland Parkway, from White Eagle Boulevard to Lorraine Road; creating a new two-lane road at 44th Avenue East, from White Eagle Boulevard to Lorraine Road; and a new two-lane road at 117th Street East, from Gatwood Drive to State Road 64.

Project costs range from $8.1 million to $47.7 million.

When the public gave feedback for road improvements, options for bicyclists and those not driving vehicles ranked high on their priority list.

Community residents hope Manatee and Sarasota counties will create a bike share system, improved connections between bicycle and pedestrian areas, more public transportation options, other than buses, such as trolleys, expanded trails for bike riders and more “walkable communities.”

Nick Lepp, project manager with Renaissance Planning Group, said East County continues to share the road more than other areas within Manatee County.

“Lakewood Ranch has done a great job with providing corridors, sidewalks and accessible areas for bicyclists,” Lepp said.

Between 2010 and 2040, Manatee County’s population of residents ages 65 and older is projected to jump from 24% to 30%.

The Texas Transportation Institute’s 2014 Annual Urban Mobility Report said the Sarasota-Bradenton area experienced 14 million hours in traffic delays last year, which is a 2% increase from 2013, the Sarasota/ Bradenton Metropolitan Planning Organization’s website said.

The website equates the delay to $312 million in losses, such as time missed at work.

Manatee County’s population is expected to reach 520,000 by 2040.

Today, the county houses about 320,000 residents.

Fielding questions about growth during an event at the Polo Grill restaurant on Oct. 21, Richard Bedford was asked how developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch could afford to build roads before houses start being built.

The question was asked by a member of the Manatee Tiger Bay Club, which co-sponsored the luncheon with the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance Government Affairs committee.

“We are in an enviable position,” said Bedford, who is vicepresident of planning for Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

“We own our land and we have no debt on it. We are a road building company. The roads are in place in advance of the development.”

In this case, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch will issue an $80 million bond in the spring when road construction begins on three projects.

Lakewood Ranch Boulevard will be extended to Fruitville

Road, as will Lorraine Road. Both will be four lanes throughout.

The other project extends Deer Drive from its dead-end point back to the new Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extension.

All three projects are expected to be complete in just more than one year.

The Lakewood Ranch Stewardship District was formed as a special tax district so that future residents of the new developments could pay off the debt through property tax.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch will

begin selling Lakewood Ranch Waterside homes, in Sarasota County just south of Lakewood Ranch, in 2016.

Lakewood Ranch Waterside is expected to have just more than 5,144 units (apartments, condos, townhomes and homes) of which many will be affordable housing.

Bedford said homes would be available for less than $200,000.

He said the idea is building a community where the people who work in Lakewood Ranch can live near their jobs.

Braden River Middle stands up to bullying October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR RIVER CLUB — On the playground in fifth grade, Halleigh Johnston cringed each time another child called her an unkind name for no particular reason.

“I wondered why people would do that,” said Halleigh, now an eighth-grader at Braden River Middle School.

“Your body’s made of the same thing as theirs. It’s not different.

I put on my brave face, but it hurt inside. My mom told me not to take it personally.”

Halleigh heeded her mother’s advice, but knows bullying can hurt, even leading some children to commit suicide or take other extreme actions.

She and her classmates at Braden River Middle School last week joined together in a campaign against bullying as the school celebrated its own Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week Oct. 16 through Oct. 23. October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

Each day, students received lessons on anti-bullying topics, such as the meaning of unity, the impacts of being a bystander to bullying and strategies to address bullying.

Medical clinic draws line to offer help

PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR EAST COUNTY — Douglas Schiller and Dr. Richard Conard have a big goal in mind, and it’s one that will take a community effort to achieve.

They need more than 700 volunteers, composed of health care professionals and members of the public, to provide medical services to an estimated 2,500 people during a Remote Area Medical clinic Nov. 21-22 at Manatee Technical College.

“This is really the introduction of RAM in Florida,” said Conard, a retired physician who attended his first RAM event in Tennessee in November 2014. “The ground floor of MTC will turn into a health care clinic for two days.”

Remote Area Medical is a nonprofit founded in 1985 to prevent pain and alleviate suffering in the world’s inaccessible areas. It offers health care clinics through-

out the country, and the clinic at MTI will offer dental services, vision and general medical services. If a person needs followup care, he or she will be issued a followup card to receive free services through MCR Health Services.

“Many medical situations can’t be handled in one visit,” Schiller said.

For the clinics, RAM provides the equipment and supplies needed, but Schiller and Conard, the local organizer and chairman, are responsible for finding enough volunteers. They also need to secure about $87,000 in private funding.

“There’s a world of logistics,”

Conard said.

The duo, who serve together in the Palmetto Rotary Club, expect the event will draw between 2,000 and 2,500 people for services, from Manatee and Sarasota counties, as well as other parts of the state.

From a local perspective, Conard sees the event as one way the local health care industry and community can meet the community’s indigent care needs.

“Forty-one percent of our population is asset limited and income restricted,” Conard said.

“We have a level of homelessness and poverty in our community, the needs of which are being

unmet.”

Patients will be seen on a firstcome, first-serve basis.

Some services, such as mammograms, blood pressure checks, flu vaccines and more, will be available to patients as they wait for specific services.

Health care volunteers will serve in their fields of expertise, while community volunteers will assist with registration, security and other logistical needs.

Schiller said RAM is forming a Florida division, and the organization is planning to hold at least five clinics through the state.

“We’re looking to do this as an annual event,” he said.

Finding a solution no walk in the park GreyHawk’s overnight parking policies cause confusion among neighborhood governance groups.

Parking overnight on the street in GreyHawk Landing is a violation of the parking policy laid out in every homeowner’s deed.

But a discrepancy between the property owners association and community development district’s policies is causing confusion, according to Richard Ulrich, an attorney who represented the POA and commented at an Oct. 22 meeting.

District counselor Andrew Cohen said the roads belong to the CDD, which has the power to tow vehicles, but not to levy fines.

That power resides in the POA. Additionally, Ulrich said there needed to be a clarification on the timespan in which a parked car would be in violation. The CDD’s policy states a car found parked on the street at 3:30 a.m. is assumed to be in violation because it most likely has been parked all night.

“We don’t want to penalize people who are arriving home or people who stay late at a friend’s house,” Supervisor Jeffery Evans said.

However, an amendment to the covenants and restrictions made in 2011 states that a violation would occur if a car was parked on the street between the hours

of 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Ulrich said the POA wanted to open a conversation with the CDD to find the answers or a possible solution to the confusion.

“We need to come up with one thing for the entire community,” said Jeffery Evans, a supervisor.

“We need to include GreyHawk West, too.”

GreyHawk West has a separate POA. The CDD decided that Evans will work with the POA and other community authorities to review the language in the community’s documents and come up with a comprehensive policy that covers each group.

“Jeff will work with the POA reps and find a solution that’s best for the community,” Cohen said.

Evans said part of the issue was that the security company hired by the CDD wasn’t being diligent monitoring and reporting overnight parking violations. That issue was brought up during the September CDD meeting. The issue has improved in the last few weeks, he said.

“What’s left is a conversation where we reconcile the differences between the rules, then enforce whatever we agree to rigorously, make sure violators are notified and respect the community’s wishes,” Evans said.

Furniture drives the bus, but art is his ticket ABOUT RON MASSARO

I

t was a strange place to find his personal heaven.

Not far west of Myakka City, Ron Massaro stood in the heat of his workshop as another one of his wood projects twirled at high rotations on a lathe. He was in the process of using a shaping tool to create a piece of art that even the angels would admire.

Many would point toward Massaro’s beautiful home, the pool or the nearby, picturesque pond as significant reasons why he has settled down in the area after testing myriad professions to find his calling.

With his family surrounding him, his wife, Alessandra, and kids, Louie and Elisa, you would think he would spend as little time as possible in that workshop, which occupies about 2,000 square feet to the side and behind his house. Due to its size, it hasn’t been feasible to air condition the environment, which means Massaro likely will lose weight during the summers.

Despite the heat, the workshop might as well have pearly gates considering the way Massaro feels about it. Well, make that pearlwood gates.

Now 47, Massaro is two years into a new career that keeps him on the verge of obsessing over the products he sells mostly by word of mouth.

He looked over at a wooden desk that had been ordered from his Wooden Armory business. He was told it looked like a very basic desk.

Basic?

Massaro jumped up on the desk, which under his weight didn’t show any of the heave or ho usually found in discount store models. He jumped back off, and grabbed a heavy rubber hammer.

Just to make a point, he started banging the desk apart.

He pointed to the dovetail joints. “There is not a screw in this desk,” he said.

Obviously, he takes deep pride in his woodworking skills, which he learned first from his dad Tony’s uncle, Rocco Massaro.

When Ron Massaro was 13 years old, working in construction already, he started doing carpentry. He already had the woodworking bug from watching Uncle Rocco perform his magic.

By the time he was in high school, he was working in a place called Kramer Cabinets in Bethel Park, Pa. He didn’t expect woodworking would be in his future, but he was learning.

The trail he covered from there included other stops in the U.S. and in various cities in Italy, where he met Alessandra more than 20 years ago. He ran a welding machine production plant and she was an employee there, a job that she eventually quit so they could pursue their relationship without having a “conflict of interest.”

The journey eventually landed them here as his parents, Tony and Eileen, were planning retirement in Sarasota. Ron Massaro was living life as a yacht captain when one day while working out at Ming Wu Martial Arts, he was asked by the owner, Jessie Vi, to build a wooden structure called

a “mook jong,” which basically looks like a cat tree (only wood) with arms extending out of a base.

It is used to practice martial arts moves and usually mimics the height of its owner.

Massaro charged $600 for the project, and then started selling more of them. It wasn’t long before he decided he could make a career from his woodwork.

Adding to his decision to explore the woodworking territory was his love of the dying art of marquetry. He was introduced to marquetry, in which the artist crafts designs into a wooden piece by connecting together tiny wood shavings, when he visited the art meccas of Rome, Florence and Pisa.

“It’s like a mosaic made with wood,” he said. “But from a business standpoint, not too many people want to pay the price that it takes in making marquetry.”

Massaro spent eight full days working on a lazy Susan and charged $350 for it. It doesn’t make economical sense, but he loves it.

But I did know he was capable of being creative.”

She handles the business side for her husband in an endeavor that could be risky financially.

“He really puts himself into whatever he does,” she said. “It’s like any new adventure … you think about what could go wrong.

I know one way or another, he will make it work. Whether he is woodworking or running a winery, he does it with passion.”

“I don’t think anyone understands the work that goes into it. The inlay wood is perfect and looks like it is painted or airbrushed.”

Meals delivery offers food for thought

A

few years back when I agreed to handle a twice-a-month route for Meals on Wheels in Crawfordsville, Ind., I thought I was dropping off food.

Wrong.

One of my first routes was in January, and it had snowed pretty hard the night before. I trudged through the snow to the front door and an elderly lady answered, looking me up and down.

“Do you think you could shovel a path for me?” she asked.

I looked at the woman, bent over from years of wear and tear.

Well, of course I could clear a path.

She looked into my eyes and flashed a big, warm smile that I always will remember. We became instant friends.

Along the 90-minute route, nobody else asked me to shovel snow, but I was able to provide a few other tasks, such as moving a piece of furniture or getting the mail. Most of all, I provided conversation.

I don’t know if you have experienced this, but as a society, we aren’t real good about listening to seniors.

Those who wonder about that statement can find out for themselves right here in the East County area. On Wednesday, those who deliver Meals on Wheels in East County picked them up for the first time at the new Daybreak Adult Day Center, which operates under the Meals on Wheels Plus umbrella, on S.R. 70. Lakewood Ranch itself had 14 orders for a meal that day.

Maribeth Phillips, the CEO of Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee County, would like people to know that you don’t have to be poor to need a meal. Perhaps a person is too ill to cook or immobile.

Meals on Wheels will deliver on a long-term basis, or just for a short period of time if someone is, say, recovering from a surgery.

A sample meal would be lemon chicken over linguine, green peas and cauliflower, and honey wheat bread. OK, I admit that cauliflower gags me, but I would love the rest of it. Meals cost $6

Rowers tend to be tall, but you appear to be about 5-foot-2.

Were you a rower?

No, and I wasn’t a coxswain either. But I have been in the sports industry for 14 years.

When you are running an event as big as the World Championships, you really need knowledge about how to run a big event, not necessarily sports knowledge.

You have to know how to market an event, operations, hotel accommodations, fundraisers, sponsorships. The business side is what I am being brought on board to do.

When I started interviewing, I read “The Boys in the Boat” (about the University of Washington nine-man team that represented the United States in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and won the gold). Then I dove into it in France at the 2015 World Championships Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

achel Knowles knows how to make a character look alive — or dead.

Knowles volunteers her makeup expertise with the Lakewood Ranch Mustang Players, the drama department at the high school taught by her mother Roxane Caravan. She often does all of the costume and stage makeup for their performances.

Earlier this month, she gave students a prep class on creepy Halloween makeup.

Jessica Kroupa, a senior and president of the Mustang Players, said the extra effort with Halloween makeup increases “production value.”

“It definitely looks cooler and more believable than just putting black on an eye for a bruise,” she said. “That takes away from it.”

It’s not all about artistry.

Rachel Knowles explained to the students a little common-sense anatomy knowledge creates a realistic look. She showed students how to make both a bruise and a gunshot wound, but it’s not just about using black-and-blue and fake blood.

“You have to think about color,” she said. “A fresh bruise is a different color than an old one.”

Here are some tips.

BLACK EYE/ BRUISE You will need: n Cream makeup, colors: dark blue, purple, red, green or yellow n Powder (translucent or finishing powder)

Rachel Knowles works on the colors around a bullet hole/flesh wound, into which she glued a pencil. n A brush or foam wedge for application Start with dark blue and purple on the inside of the eye. Add a ring of red. To make a bruise seem older, add a thin ring of green and yellow around the edges. Blend the rings of color together and fade outer edges into the skin.

Blot with powder to “set” makeup — this helps prevent the makeup from running if it gets wet.

FLESH/BULLET WOUND You will need: n Liquid latex n Cotton balls n Fake blood n Cream makeup in black, purple, red, and flesh color n Powder

n Brush or wedge for application

Use the liquid latex to create the raised edges and dimensions of the wound. Pull apart cotton balls into wisps, then dab wisps in the latex and affix to skin. Continue in this way until the wound has been built up. Let dry 10 minutes.

Fill in wound hole with black, then dark purple on the upper edges, then red around the hole edges and sides.

Use the flesh color around the edges of the latex to blend the wound edges into the skin, then powder.

Apply fake blood with the tail end of the brush or wedge. It is thick, and gravity will help it roll down the skin. Allow blood to dry 10 minutes, watch for drips.

SCARING UP SOME TRULY FRIGHTFUL LOOKS Zombified: If you’re aiming to be a member of the walking dead for Halloween, focus more on the darker blues and purples and less on the red, and apply pale powder to your whole face for a 6-feet-under look.

Impalement: Want to add an even more gruesome point to your look? A lightweight object can be glued into the “wound.” Lakewood Ranch student Rachel Knowles glued half of a pencil into a bullet hole wound with spirit gum (eyelash glue also works). After letting it dry, she filled in around the pencil with more liquid latex and then used makeup to blend with the surrounding colors.

The two had been living together, but broke up, and the woman had found another place to stay and was getting her belongings from his home. Intersection of Carolina Street and University Parkway A man on an ATV was driving on University Parkway without a license plate and was driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic.

A deputy followed the ATV and attempted to stop him on the right side of the road. The man turned from the westbound to eastbound lanes to avoid the deputy. A second deputy followed the ATV eastbound on University Parkway. The ATV driver looked back at the deputy, then attempted to cross a ditch to avoid law enforcement. However, the maneuver caused the ATV driver to get stuck in the ditch.

6600 block of 12th Avenue East A man woke up and went outside to find that two passenger-side tires of his vehicle had been punctured and were flat. He told the Sheriff’s Office that his tires had been fine the day before when he arrived home and parked his car.

He also told deputies that he recently broke up with his girlfriend and suspected she had punctured the tires, because she was upset about the break up.

Mason weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces and was nearly 21 inches long. Beth Wood gave birth nine days early, and she was in labor for 18 hours, making her a “super trooper extraordinaire,” Brian Wood said.

The Ohio natives yelled “O-H” during delivery, which they hoped would be answered by an “I-O” by their newest family member. The chant is one Ohio State Buckeye football fans yell during games.

Now the Woods have a little Buckeye of their own.

New lessons focus on old furniture Haile technology teacher Maureen Hudson teaches students to repurpose with a purpose.

As Katie Love looks at an old wooden cabinet, she sees possibilities.

Love, a seventh-grader at Carlos E. Haile Middle School, is in the business of taking something old and giving it a fresh look and purpose.

“What if we made this cabinet into this?” Love said to her technology teacher, Maureen Hudson, while showing her a photo on Pinterest of string art. “We can use pins and string to make an outline of the state of Florida.

We can even make a heart where Bradenton is. I love that idea.”

Hudson is fostering creativity with a side of business savvy in her sixth- and seventh-period technology production classes.

Since the beginning of the school year, students have taken donated furniture and household items and refurbished and repurposed them for sale in their small store, the Storm Cellar, which is located inside Hudson’s classroom.

Principal Sharon Scarbrough hopes to find a space at the front of the school for students to sell their work.

The Storm Cellar’s customers are mostly parents and faculty.

Students are crafting center-

pieces and other decorations for upcoming events at the school, such as Haile Has a Heart, which will be held Jan. 9.

So far, students have sold seven pieces and have cleaned, sanded, painted, cut and completed 25 decorations, shelves, dressers and other projects.

“We call it upcycling,” Hudson said. “It’s repurposing with a purpose.”

Hudson finds inspiration at community yard sales.

“I’ll make my husband slam on the breaks so I can grab something out of someone’s trash,” Hudson said with a laugh. “I hear my students are doing the same thing.”

The children create advertisements for their pieces and Hudson distributes that advertising to her colleagues.

An inventory system was created to separate the items by colors, name and price.

“We’re learning real-world skills,” Hudson said.

Students place orders for items such as knobs, baskets and paint, with Hudson, who later buys the supplies.

The group also works together to agree on a selling price. Revenue from sales and the $20 lab fee students paid at the beginning of the school year keep the project going.

“Typically we just charge twice what it cost us to fix up the piece,” Hudson said. “We use about $4 worth of paint on one item, and we consider if students have to buy extra decorations to add to the pieces.”

Hudson plans to launch a blog on which students can post their items available for sale.

Assistant Principal Michelle Savchuk gave the students a list of decorative signs she wants made for her family members for Christmas.

“I love this idea,” Scarbrough said. “And the kids love it.”

Hudson, who has a background in interior design, thought of the idea over the summer for the student-operated store. She tries to think of new class projects each

year to keep students engaged, she said.

“I’m big into inventing and trying new things,” Hudson said.

When she pitched the idea to her students in August, Hudson said they grumbled and let her know they weren’t interested.

Once students saw the donated items in the back of the classroom, they changed their minds.

“This class shows you that everything has a purpose,” Love said. “We have a lot of fun.”

RADEN RIVER — Standing slightly off the line of scrimmage, Tyler Strahs had his eyes focused on the ball as he motioned to Braden River’s four defensive linemen.

It was a different role than he had a year ago when he hoisted Braden River’s first district championship trophy as a senior defensive lineman.

Now he was calling some of the shots as a rookie assistant defensive line coach, and it appeared he was pretty good in his new role. As Palmetto High quarterback Jack Allison stepped into the pocket, a host of Pirates swarmed around Allison, sacking the Tigers signal caller for a loss.

Farther down the sideline, assistant Brett Walker huddled with Braden River’s offensive linemen, offering words of encouragement. They headed back to the field to help the Pirates win Friday’s Class 7A-District 11 game at Pirate Stadium.

Braden River head coach Curt Bradley has the team rolling, and he does it with some interesting help. Bradley has five former players, including Strahs and Walker, who serve as either assistant coaches or managers. The other assistant is Kelvin Albritton, who played for Bradley at Braden River, while Malcolm Belton and Michael Douglas are managers. They both played for Bradley at Leesburg High.

“I really wanted to get into coaching,” Strahs said. “I didn’t have the opportunity to play college ball, so to be able to stay with the program has been really enjoyable. I just enjoy seeing all of the guys go as hard as they can.”

Strahs is now an assistant defensive line coach for the Pirates while Walker (offensive line) and Albritton (linebackers) both serve as assistant coaches for Braden River’s JV squad and also help out with the varsity squad.

They all have been instrumental in the Pirates’ success this season.

“Not everyone can play in college, so this is a way to keep them around the sport,” Bradley said.

“Their heart is still in it, so this is a way for them to continue to grow and learn football.”

Bradley first connected with Belton and Douglas while coaching the two as seniors during the 2011 season at Leesburg High.

Following that season, the three remained in contact.

When the opportunity presented itself for Belton and Douglas to return to the sideline alongside Bradley, while they finished college, they couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“You stepped up and never held back. I’m so proud of you guys.”

“It’s been great,” Belton said. “I love how the boys have brought me in ever since I first came. It’s really fun to be around them.”

Albritton and Walker began coaching for the Pirates two years ago and both have been fortunate to be part of Braden River’s turnaround.

“I love it,” Albritton said. “If I can’t play then I can’t think of a better way to be involved than to teach kids football.”

Since graduating in 2013, Albritton and Walker have seen the Pirates win back-to-back district championships.

“I simply love the game, and this is a way for me to give back and teach some of the techniques that I learned,” Walker said. “I just enjoy seeing the guys have success.”

Since joining Braden River’s coaching staff, all five former players have had to change their mentality.

“They can’t relate the same way because they’re coaches now,” Bradley said. “They have to respect the transition from player to coach, and they’ve done an awesome job.”

That’s the beauty of sports. At some point, streaks come to an end. Just ask Lakewood’s volleyball team, which also saw its season come to an early finish with a 3-1 loss to Sarasota in the Class 7A-District 11 semifinals Oct. 20.

It was the first time Lakewood had lost to Sarasota in the district tournament and the first time in four years the Lady Mustangs, who have been known for making deep playoff runs (having reached the state semifinals two of the past three years) didn’t reach the regional tournament.

With only one senior and host of young talent on both Lakewood’s boys golf and volleyball teams, the Mustangs will undoubtedly look to start new streaks next season. n

With the win, Braden River extended it’s regular-season winning streak to 18 games, and the Pirates are now two wins away from putting together their second straight perfect regular season.

It’s been quite the turnaround for a team that limped through a 1-9 season four years ago. When you see the amount of time and effort head coach Curt Bradley,

offensive coordinator Eric Sanders, and the rest of the Pirates coaching staff have put into the program, it’s not at all surprising to see the players respond.

It’s been fun to watch. With Braden River set to host its regular-season finale Nov. 6 followed by a first-round playoff game Nov. 13, the Pirates and their growing fan base will have plenty to cheer for in the weeks ahead.

akewood Ranch once again will be represented at the Florida High School Athletic Association Golf State Championships, but for the first time in eight years, Lakewood’s boys golf team won’t be teeing off at Mission Inn and Resort, at Howey-in-the-Hills.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The boys aren’t going.

After making seven consecutive trips to the state tournament and winning three straight state titles from 2011 to 2013, the Mustang boys didn’t qualify after posting a sixth-place finish at the Class 3A-Region 5 tournament Oct. 19.

Instead, Lakewood’s girls golf team is preparing to head back to the state tournament for the first time since 2008. Led by sophomores Katie Kroos-Roberts, who didn’t play golf for Lakewood last season, and Sophia Warren, the Lady Mustangs slipped past Venice by a single shot to capture the program’s first regional championship Oct. 20.

So just how high will these girls climb? If the regular season is any indication, the Lady Mustangs might be singing and dancing their way to another historic finish. After all, the girls didn’t lose a match until a month into the season.

SPORTS EDITOR BRADEN RIVER — Braden River offensive lineman Alex Saguero summed up each of the Pirates’ past four seasons in a single word.

Year one: awful. Year two: progressive. Year three: great. Year four: amazing.

It was amazing indeed for Saguero and his fellow senior teammates, who limped through a 1-9 season four years ago only to walk off the field four years later as back-to-back district champions.

“It’s awesome,” Saguero said.

“Back-to-back district champs is awesome, but we are not done yet.”

Braden River captured its second-consecutive Class 7A-District 11 title with a 35-0 dismantling of previously undefeated Palmetto Oct. 23 in front of a roaring crowd clad in pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

With the win, the Pirates secured a home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

“You stepped up and never held

back,” head coach Curt Bradley told his players after the game.

“I’m so proud of you guys. That scoreboard speaks more than any words could say.”

Braden River took the opening kickoff and marched 69 yards in seven plays. Running back Raymond Thomas capped off the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run.

The Pirates added to their lead on their ensuing possession on Jaylin Austin’s 17-yard run.

Braden River added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Quarterback Jacob Huesman connected with Austin for a 37-yard strike. Huesman then hit wide receiver Juwaan Jenkins, who broke a tackle and raced down the sideline for a 52-yard score.

The Pirates sacked the Palmetto quarterback three times in the first half and held the Tigers to just 70 yards on the ground en route to their third shutout of the season.

It was the first time Palmetto had been blanked since 2012.

Braden River will try to wrap up its second straight perfect regular season against Sarasota Oct. 30 before hosting Gibbs Nov. 6 on Homecoming and Senior Night.

“I can wear a Braden River football shirt out in public these days — it was rough those first nine games,” Bradley said. “But we knew we had a special group of young men, and they started as freshmen and they lost early. And they didn’t want that to happen anymore.”

That was the feeling Oct. 23 as Schroeder-Manatee Ranch put together a celebration in honor of Lakewood Ranch’s 20th anniversary with the hope that thousands would attend.

The developer got its wish.

The three-hour outdoor celebration, which was filled with games, a variety of food, live music by Koko Ray and the Keepers, pumpkin decorating and other activities, spread across Premier Sports Campus and was packed from beginning to end.

A kid’s zone featured rides and interactive events, such as inflatable objects in which participants could lie and be rolled around the lawn.

umpkins, pumpkins everywhere.

The 2015 Hunsader Farms Pumpkin Festival officially ended Oct. 25. Complete with a pumpkin patch, corn maze and a truck rally, the festival brought in thousands of people to enjoy fall favorites. The festival was delayed from starting

its first weekend when heavy rainfall caused flooding on the property. But things went smoothly from there.

Hundreds take strides for a cancer cure T

he Sarasota Polo Club grounds were splattered in pink Saturday as hundreds of community groups and residents gathered for the 16th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk.

The Sarasota-Manatee event raises about $300,000 annually and supports local cancer patients through programs such as the Look Good Feel Better program, which provides them with free wigs, hats and makeup, and the Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation to appointments.

During the walk, Brandon Scott, a Bradenton artist, created an original painting, which was raffled. The proceeds were donated.

“I’ve had quite a few people affected by breast cancer in my life.

I want to help out how I can,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing for the community to put this together.”
