“If ‘West Side Story’ was created today, it would still have the same power.

Kids are still killing kids, and the idea of ‘We don’t want that kind’ is still with us.”

McKneely doesn’t direct from the safety of his chair; he has a dancer’s intuition, and he gives direction through movement.

He stands in as a gang member, pushing, yelling and staring right into his actors’ eyes. It’s an edgy moment, but that’s the point.

If the musical’s message of love conquering prejudice is going to prevail, the danger needs to feel real.

McKneely hopes to use the power of theater to inspire cultural change.

THE AMERICAN CHARACTER

In March, after Michael Donald Edwards announced this season’s lineup, one theme quickly rose to the forefront: race.

The Asolo Repertory Theatre producing artistic director says he didn’t choose the theme intentionally, but as he and his staff began compiling a list of potential plays for the fourth year of the theater’s “American Character” project, he recognized a responsibility to address how race factors into the equation.

The five-season project, launched in 2012, explores what it means to be American through a careful selection of plays and musicals.

Kicking off this season’s theatrical dialogue on race is McKneely, a Tony Award-nominated choreographer and director who has been a performer and choreographer on Broadway since the late 1980s. Asolo Rep tapped McKneely to direct and lead the choreography for “West Side Story,” as well as “Josephine,” one of the final shows of the repertory season.

Two weeks into rehearsal, McKneely is conditioning his actors to absorb the passion of the story, the rhythm of the music and the iconic Jerome Robbins choreography. He gets right next to his actors and works alongside them to ensure the acting and dancing are true to the original choreography he learned from Robbins himself in 1989.

For the actors, who are immersed in the lives of the musical’s characters, it’s more than just a role. Amos Wolff, who’s playing the part of Jet gang leader, Riff, says the lessons of racial divide are always present in his mind.

“There’s something about our society that’s been there since slavery — and still is today —

that’s about putting down some ‘other’ to make ourselves feel better,” he says. “‘West Side Story’ is a cathartic experience for an audience. Hopefully they get to see some of those prejudices played out onstage.”

While McKneely and his cast are rehearsing for opening night, Kathryn Moroney, education and outreach director for Asolo Rep, and her team are preparing to help Sarasota audiences digest the complex themes of race, national identity and immigration that play out during the show. The storyline features white and Puerto Rican gang members battling over neighborhood territory.

After each show, the theater will host community talks, titled “IllumiNation Series,” which will feature community experts and representatives. Each talk is free after the show and will unpack what was said and seen onstage and relate it to the everyday lives

“It felt like the energy of this season, and where we’ve gone throughout the entire American Character project, invited us to dedicate attention to not only the artistry, but also to the issues of these plays,” she says.

Moroney and Edwards hope these discussions will generate conversation and help change audience members’ perspectives on race and prejudice. In her opinion, the real final act of any production happens after the curtain falls and the actors take their bows, when audiences discuss the show and absorb the show’s message.

And for Edwards, the heart of the “American Character” project is about more than entertainment: It’s about having an impact.

“I think we have to be ready for a grown-up conversation,” he says. “I think we can talk about these difficult things in the theater that may be difficult in any other context.”

And according to Edwards, opening this season with “West Side Story” Nov. 10 was a great opportunity to put race in the spotlight.

“These plays are not history lessons,” he says. “They’re connecting to larger themes of where the country is right now, where it’s been, and where it’s going.”

George Generoso has found what he was looking for. He emerges from a storage closet carrying a box of old photos he plans to have digitized later in the week.

He flips through the pile of dusty laminated pictures, smiling as he remembers some of the more noteworthy acts that have played at the Five O’Clock Club in the 20 years he’s been co-owner.

Dozens of reputable musicians are represented in the pile — R.L. Burnside, The Allman Brothers, Buddy Miles — but Generoso no longer displays them on the wall above the bar. And not just because the bass from live shows kept knocking them down. He says he’s ready to embrace a new image for the bar.

Known primarily as a blues club, the Five O’Clock Club will celebrate its 60th anniversary this Saturday with something its regulars might not expect: its first ever hip-hop show.

“This is a music venue,” says Generoso. “And I enjoy all types of music. There’s a whole demographic of younger music fans

When Generoso first took over as co-owner in 1995, the club was hosting almost exclusively blues musicians. Wanting to appeal to a wider audience, he began incorporating other genres, including rock, singer/songwriter and reggae, and he began to see a lot of new faces. Now, he says it’s time to adapt again.

Feeling that Sarasota’s millennial audience was underserved, Generoso decided to partner with local hip-hop artist Ryan Larranaga, who performs as Ryanito, to appeal to a younger crowd. For the last few weeks, Larranaga has hosted late-night DJ performances at the bar in a series called “DJs After Dark,” and Generoso says they have a shared vision for Sarasota’s music scene.

When considering options for Halloween and the bar’s 60th anniversary celebration, Generoso reached out to Larranaga to put together something unique.

“I’m always looking for ways to integrate hip-hop into Sarasota’s mainstream culture,” says Larranaga. “I’ve always been a fan of the Five O’Clock Club. It’s a place where I go to discover new musicians, and I thought, ‘Why not have hip-hop there, too?’”

Larranaga assembled a lineup that includes himself, three other performers and two DJs. He says the acts range in style from hiphop to R&B, and that there will

be something that everyone can enjoy. Most importantly, though, he says the show is about spreading positivity.

“Every act on this bill has a socially conscious message,” he says. “A lot of people associate rap with violence and negativity, but we want to show people the activist portion of the genre.”

That mindset is part of what first inspired Generoso to work with Larranaga.

“I like what Ryan’s doing,” he says. “I like the message he’s trying to put out there. Of course,

there are traditionalists who are set in their ways. But that’s what they said about rock and jazz — it’s the devil’s music. It’s all just music. I want this club to grow and change with the times.”

Larranaga says he’s looking forward to introducing his music and hip-hop culture to the historic venue.

“It’s a perfect fit,” he says. “It’s got the right intimate vibe. When you pack the place, there’s so much energy. If you’re not a fan of hip-hop, you will be by the time you leave.”

Working in a new Longboat Key studio space, Javier Rodriguez is exploring new styles and taking risks with his artwork.

avier Rodriguez was hesitant at first.

The thought of trading his home studio for a twomonth residency at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts was a bit daunting. Since moving to Sarasota from Puerto Rico in 2000 to study at Ringling College of Art and Design, he’s rarely worked outside his home studio.

But Rodriguez says he's come to embrace the challenge.

“It’s a weird environment for me,” he says. “But I thought, since I’m out here, why not explore a different style?”

The new style is an expressive depiction of Rodriguez’s world, told through charcoal sketches based on everyday photos he takes of family, friends and surroundings on his iPad. He dives into each portrait, not worrying about formality or frames.

“I’m not that neat,” he says.

“I’m not worried about how I’m going to present the pieces. The more unfinished it is, the better.

I just explore the image.”

Rodriguez’s pioneering artistic sensibilities fit well with the rest of his SARTQ cohorts, who have joined him in the group’s twomonth residency. The result of their experimental efforts is the

Running through Oct. 31, the show inhabits the center’s entire campus. And this brief artistic move has made Rodriguez appreciate the power of taking risks.

“More than 50% of what happens on the canvas is an accident,” he says. “That’s the biggest advantage we all have. If you have the artistic eye to stop on those magical moments or beautiful accidents when they happen, you’re in good shape.”

Sometimes, a drink’s origins are just as important as its ingredients. It’s not enough to simply tip one back; one should understand the historical significance behind their libation. And when it comes to cocktails, Jack Dusty is no history slouch.

Its newest creation, the Up Spirits, pays homage to the sailing industry of yore that informs the bar and restaurant’s nautical motif.

For hundreds of years, sailors in the British Royal Navy were given daily rum allowances, which over time, were diluted with water and blended with citrus to prevent spoilage and scurvy. Twice a day, sailors announced the rations with a call for “up spirits.”

Someone eventually realized that serving alcohol twice a day was ill advised, and the practice was retired. And although sailors across the pond are no longer treated to a midday grog, the

To kick off the Sarasota Ballet’s 25th season, Director Ian Webb brought back one of the audience’s favorite programs: “Theatre of Dreams,” which features works created by the Sarasota Ballet’s own dancers. This time, Webb selected “The Best of Theatre of Dreams,” which was a representation of a diverse selection of different choreographic styles and pieces.

The evening gave Webb the opportunity to feature many of the dancers from the company, which is perhaps at its largest, with 58 dancers under contract this year. He even promoted one dancer, Madysen Felber, from apprentice to corps de ballet after her performance in Jamie Carter’s “A Deux Mains.” The program also honored Ballet Master Pavel Fomin, who has been with the company since nearly its inception by bringing his ballet, “Hommage à Chopin,” back into the repertoire.

The performance opened with Kate Honea’s “Gitana Galop,” which is set to music by Johann Strauss II. Honea’s choreography couples petite allégro movements and quick steps with grande allegro, big jumps and leaps. Victoria Hulland was elegant and precise in her pas de deux with Edward Gonzalez, who commands the stage as the ultimate cavalier.

Logan Learned performed multiple grande cabrioles both devant and derrière.

Danielle Brown and Ricardo Graziano oozed romance in Alex Harrison’s “The Blue Hour” pas de deux set to music by Frédéric Chopin. Brown was absolutely radiant with a gorgeous smile that permeated throughout the entire piece. The leading duo also commanded the stage performing Fomin’s “Hommage à Chopin,” also set to Chopin, which combined Russian character movements with classic ballet.

Ricki Bertoni brought a bit of a Bob Fosse-styled piece to the stage with “Ragtop” set to music

by Scott Joplin, which was played live on a piano by Thomas Pizzi.

The women wore dark bobbed wigs and white gloves, and the men were topped with bowler hats. Amy Wood and Christine Windsor stood out in this jazzy piece with sultry style.

Madysen Felber, Ellen Overstreet and Ben Kay were part of a love triangle in Jamie Carter’s pas de troix, “A Deux Mains,” set to music by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

All three were well cast in the lyrical piece that featured their lovely lines and extensions.

The program ended with Logan Learned’s showstopper contemporary piece, “Nebulous,” which is set to Phillip Glass. Gabriela Poole is one to watch with a powerful, yet unique style of dancing.

Ricardo Graziano and Juan Gil appeared as if they were mirror images of each other with their strong technique and flexibility within the movements. And Ricardo Rhodes impressed with big jumps and turns.

‘Freak’ takes a walk on the wild side As Woody Allen once said, “Sex is the most fun you can have without laughing.” But if there’s a way to mess up a good thing, the human race will find it. Sex has its dark side, and playwright Anna Jordan is interested in exploring it.

She did it before, in “Chicken Shop,” and she does it again in “Freak”—a two-hander play and the Urbanite Theatre’s latest production.

It’s all about sex, folks. Get a babysitter. You have been warned.

But don’t be scared off.

Aside from a changed blouse or two, there’s no physical nudity.

The nakedness is merely psychological. Let’s start with the acting: Summer Dawn Wallace's portrayal of Georgie is shattering. Her character turns 30 and hits an identity crisis when her boyfriend dumps her. She quits her dead-end job and finds empowerment in sex, drugs and stripping — temporarily.

Then Georgie takes on a freelance assignment with a bachelor party. The “no touch” rule doesn’t apply at the guy’s house. Dancing becomes touch becomes orgy becomes rape.

And that’s when Georgie falls apart.

In another raw, honest performance, Ellie McCaw’s 15-year-old Leah is on the

verge of sexual awakening.

Thanks to the Internet, she has a good idea of what she’ll wake to, and she practices the appropriate expressions. Her boyfriend’s pals walk in on her after she’s putting on her top, and the two guys grab it and play keep-away.

Director V. Craig Heidenreich pulls you into this peep show of the mind. Invisibility is his directing style — the illusion that there’s no director at all. That’s perfect for this play, which turns you into a voyeur of two women’s naked, shameful thoughts. The playwright wants to make you squirm, and the characters must feel totally real and exposed to make that happen. One hint of fakery would ruin it. But Heidenreich keeps it real.

Jordan matches her edgy material with edgy form. The play’s narrative unfolds in surreal counterpoint. When they’re not bumping and grinding to cheesy pop tunes, the two women speak alternating monologues, sharing dark secrets like they’re talking to an invisible father confessor.

Their words veer from latterday beat poetry to the rhythms of contemporary speech. The two narratives usually complement each other, though occasionally they feel like rude interruptions. When the two stories finally converge, it feels like a quick way to end the play.

But that’s the only false note in an evening of unvarnished

It’s all about sex. And it’s not a pretty picture.

“Freak” is to sex what “The Lost Weekend” was to drinking. After seeing this play, chastity starts to seem like a very good idea. At least if you’re a woman.

But don’t get the wrong

impression. There’s some brutal stuff here, but there’s plenty of snarky humor and fine-tuned insights, as well.

A gutsy play demands a gutsy audience. “Freak” demolishes barriers, takes risk and takes you to a new place. If that’s your cup of tea, this is the show for you.

Justin Long is no stranger to the Ringling College of Art and Design. He first visited the campus in 2012 with fellow actor Sam Rockwell and returned in 2013 as a speaker in the college’s Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab. On Oct. 22, Long returned with his filmmaking partner and younger brother Christian Long to do more than just talk with students.

He’s here to collaborate.

Long, who is known for starring in such films as “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” “Drag Me to Hell” and “Comet,” will produce an eight-episode travel comedy Web series based in Sarasota.

Working in collaboration with more than a dozen upperclassmen filmmaking students at Ringling College and the school’s Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab, the brothers hope to put a comedic spin on the established travelshow genre. They held their first pre-production meeting with students Oct. 22.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in March, with a hopeful summer 2016 release date. The students will help produce, film, edit and design the Web series along with the brothers. Indie-film pioneer Kevin Smith (director of “Clerks,” “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Tusk”) will also assist in men-

toring on the production.

“We loved the facilities, the students and the enthusiasm we found here,” says Justin Long. “We felt like it would be a good marriage, and we wanted to utilize all the wealth of resources here that have largely gone untapped in terms of people outside the college.”

Not only will the series offer students professional, on-set experience, but it will also allow the brothers to create a show independent of the corporate studio infrastructure. Justin Long says he hopes to shine a spotlight on Sarasota that goes beyond Florida stereotypes and standard tourist fare.

“What are the things you remember and enjoy the most about traveling?” he asks. “Rarely is it the building or the restaurant you visit. It’s the people you meet.”

The brothers also say they look forward to learning from the students at Ringling College.

“Working with these students doesn’t feel like a risk,” says Christian Long. “We were here two years ago, and everyone was so incredibly polished and skilled at what they were showing us.

Any fear one might have working with students was quickly erased when we met them.”

The Web series will feature Justin Long acting as host, interacting with the people and places that represent what students called “underground” Sarasota.

“There are a lot of great things Sarasota has a lot to offer younger people than I would think, being an outsider,” says Justin Long.

“We want to branch out and show people there’s more.”

by Penny Hill and Jackie Rogers, was dedicated to former president and CEO Michael Cuffage. The standouts of the night were, of course, the seven local dancers who spent months practicing routines with their professional partners to perform and raise money for Community AIDS Network. Chaz Glunk, with partner Sarah Haworth, won dance champion, and Jamie Becker, with partner Maksym Lototskyy, took home the trophy for raising the most funds.

Our very own Molly Schechter was honored with the Hidden Gem award at The Friendship Center’s inaugural “People Helping People” awards breakfast Oct. 20, at Michael’s On East for her dedication, volunteerism and fundraising work that she, along with her partner, Harold Ronson, have done for the center that over the years netted a quarter million dollars. Boy, oh, boy — Schechter was elegant, gracious, funny and classy. The room was shockingly quiet and polite while Schechter accepted her award and graciously diverted the attention away from herself to the amazing work and people of The Friendship Center. But we’re not surprised; she’s always been our gem. Also of note, the breakfast ended five minutes earlier than scheduled.

ence was a trike-a-thon. My mother was a volunteer substitute teacher at our school, and I wanted to help with anything she did. I was in the first grade, and I remember being really excited because my brother was in it, and I got to help hand out water with the adults. I remember thinking how neat it was to be looked up to by the little kids.

I FIRST got involved with

Junior League when I moved back from college. I’m from Sarasota, but just because you grew up here doesn’t mean you have that sense of community when you move back. I found that in Junior League. Through that organization, there were a lot of women I looked up to — women who were starting nonprofits or elevating ones to another level. Seeing that made me realize I wanted to help be that change as well.

have different talents, and you should try to surround yourself with people who complement your weaknesses and play to your strengths. Learning that I’m not a weaker person because I can’t do it all has been huge in my development as a volunteer.

WHETHER IT’S at work or in

a volunteer situation, young people do need to lean in and speak up. Your ideas have worth and should be a part of the conversation. Early on in my volunteer work, I was nervous to speak up because I felt like I was overreaching, but eventually I found that confidence, and when I offered my ideas, the others were very warm and receptive. Confidence is key, and everyone can bring ideas to the table.

IT’S IMPORTANT to set an

example, not only for children, but also for your peers and even those people generations ahead of you. People are busy and can hold back, but we all have so much to give. It’s important to set an example that you can be young, professionally driven and career-oriented and still find the time to give and volunteer.

Tiffany Rively and Kyle Kozel met during their senior year of high school because their best friends were dating. After a few months of spending time together, they realized they had a unique balance and great chemistry.

After almost 10 years together, Kyle proposed on May 10, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency in Bonita Springs while they were enjoying a staycation.

The couple was married Oct. 10, at IslandWalk at West Villages in Venice. As a corporate fashion buyer for a large department store, Tiffany appreciates texture and color complements, and the day’s events were modern chic with a tropical feel.

While scrolling through Pinterest, the bride came across a wedding invitation and felt she found her wedding inspiration — the color scheme became black-and-white stripes with muted soft blush, seafoam and champagne.

“This example of masculine/ feminine I felt perfectly represented our taste,” she says. “He loves simple, like the blackand-white look, and I am ultra feminine and like lots of muted tones and sparkle.”

The couple enjoyed a change in weather while recently honeymooning at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.
