n the back corner of his Burns Court retail store, Austin Kowal sat hunched over his desk, sketching a T-shirt idea for his new urban streetwear company, Clothesline Tees.

An older woman came in from the street and stopped to survey the recently opened shop and gallery space. On display were a handful of

Kowal’s edgy, screen-printed shirts, works from a recent pop-up show and brightly graffitied walls.

Unable to see Kowal from behind his desk, the woman made her opinion clear.

Despite the blunt critique, Kowal wasn’t upset. In fact, he couldn’t have been happier.

“That was the most amazing thing,” he says. “It was so out of the realm of anything she had seen in town. She couldn’t believe there was something like this in Sarasota. To me, that was awesome. It drove me to keep doing what I was doing.”

Now, seven years later, Clothesline has earned a dedicated following and established itself as an ambassador for Sarasota’s young creatives.

ARTISTIC BEGINNINGS

A Sarasota native, Kowal, 30, grew up immersed in the local arts scene. His parents were both antique dealers, and he remembers accompanying them to auctions and estate sales and helping out on the showroom floor of their shop.

Although he couldn’t relate to most of the art he saw, he says he gained an appreciation for the arts and the level of talent that existed locally.

But it wasn’t long before he noticed a lack of art with which younger people could connect.

And the few things he could relate to were fleeting.

“Things would come and go,” he says. “But young creative people here tend to not stick around very long.”

Although he never considered himself an artist, Kowal says he always pursued creative endeavors — especially drawing. And in

2008, he and a group of friends started sketching T-shirt ideas and printing them with a homemade screen-printing machine.

Despite their inexperience, Kowal says he realized they were onto something.

“We were all amateurs,” he says.

“But we had a little bit of skill, and we had some interesting ideas.

What resulted were these very basic designs, but they were really different than anything we’d seen out in public. I think our lack of artistic skills actually helped us create something fresh.”

MASS APPEAL

Over the next few years, as he continued to produce apparel, Kowal developed his skills as an illustrator and printer, as well as an audience who was hungry for something new.

Collaborating with fellow artists and photographers, Kowal created shirts, posters, hats and

Starting out, I didn’t know how to use Photoshop, or any other programs, so I had to learn how to print shirts without any digital tools.”

“Next, I lay a sheet of transparent film over my sketch and trace the design with a paint marker. That creates an opaque layer of ink where the design is.”

“Then I take the film and expose it to a screen that’s coated with light-sensitive photographic emulsion.

Wherever the black ink is, it blocks the light, and I can wash the rest out to create a stencil.”

“From there, I can pull the ink through the stencil and onto the shirt and dry-heat it to set the ink.”

He rented a warehouse space northeast of downtown, upgraded to professional printing equipment and secured a network of clients. The more he created, the more his perspective shifted.

“I was constantly creating things,” he says. “Over time, I refined my process and grew my skills. It gave me more direction.

It was really the first time I started to think of myself as an artist.”

He wasn’t the only one. His work resonated with Sarasota’s younger art-lovers. Local bands and businesses came to him to have T-shirts and posters made; he secured jobs live-printing apparel at special events, like Ringling Underground and Shamrock Pub’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party; and his shop became a hub for creativity, as he hosted increasingly popular social events, printing parties and pop-up shows.

Kowal says he grew to love his art form — especially its capacity to mass-produce and distribute his art to the public.

“I really like the idea of seeing someone wearing my shirt,” he says. “My friends would call me and tell me they saw someone out in a Clothesline shirt. That became intoxicating. Knowing that people were out there who liked something you created enough to wear it — that was awesome to me.”

FOSTERING A COMMUNITY

Today, Kowal works exclusively out of his warehouse production space, which he says has allowed him to go back to his roots and focus on the finer details of printing and running his business.

He hopes to one day open another retail space, but for now, he says he’s happy where he is, and he hopes his work will inspire other young artists to stay in town.

“Having something they can relate to is important,” he says.

“Especially in a town where there’s not a lot of that going on.

This started as a hobby for me and my friends, and it’s evolved into a business that now supports me. I want people to see it’s possible to do what you love.”

It had been more than 35 years since “Marguerite and Armand” was performed. Choreographed in 1963 by Sir Frederick Ashton specifically for iconic ballet dancers Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, the ballet was considered nearly sacrilege for anyone else to perform after its initial run.

But for the ballet to live on, it had to be passed down to the next generation.

“I was originally with the group of people that said it should never be done without Fonteyn or Nureyev,” says Sarasota Ballet Director Iain Webb. “But after seeing it again, I thought, ‘God, wasn’t I stupid.’ I was wrong to think no one else should do it or see it. It’s a masterpiece.”

It laid dormant until 2000, when Ashton’s estate began granting revival productions. It has been brought to England, Italy and Russia. Now, the ballet is finally coming to America.

On Nov. 20 and 21, the Sarasota Ballet will be the first American company to perform Ashton’s tragic love story.

To bring that masterpiece to life in three weeks’ time, Webb invited an old friend of his and the ballet’s back to Sarasota.

Grant Coyle is the principal dance notator for the Royal Ballet in London. An expert in Benesh notation (a ballet language that records choreography on a score

sheet) and British choreography, Coyle has taught “Marguerite and Armand” to companies around the world, including the La Scala Ballet Company in Milan and the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“Ballets have to be done in order to survive,” says Coyle. “The ballet is living now, which is good.

Once considered untouchable, Sarasota Ballet revives ‘Marguerite and Armand.’

For Coyle and his company of dancers to live up to the ballet’s pedigree, every element — the steps, movements and acting by the leading lovers — must be perfect. This is history in the making.

According to Coyle, passion is just as important as precision.

On day three of rehearsals, he’s helping principal dancers Ricardo Graziano and Victoria Hulland focus on conveying the emotion found in the piece.

site corner of the studio and lifts Hulland off a bed with a fiery spirit. The two dancers spent the next hour and a half of that Friday afternoon lifting each other across the length of the studio.

Coyle watches the couple with exacting detail. Just as Graziano raises Hulland into the sky on his shoulders, Coyle stops the two dancers mid-flight. He walks them back and shows them every step and motion as they should be executed, all the while humming the ballet’s score: Franz Liszt’s “B minor Piano Sonata.”

As the first American dancers cast in the ballet, Graziano and Hulland were a little intimidated at first. But the wealth of the characters and the story helped them forget about the ballet’s pedigree and just focus on mastering the steps in the moment.

“We don’t always do story ballets, and there is a lot of acting in this piece,” says Hulland. “It adds a whole other element to the rehearsal process and helps you learn the steps more quickly in character.”

The story depicts a Parisian courtesan recalling her last great love affair as she’s succumbing to tuberculosis. And as Hulland begins to die in Graziano’s arms, the two are combining Ashton’s steps with watered eyes and mourning faces that anticpate Marguerite’s slow demise.

“The challenge is to get it right and to perfect it,” says Coyle.

“Doing things over and over again helps the dancers put something of themselves into the piece.

That’s when a ballet really moves an audience. It’s no longer just a series of steps. It’s an emotional journey.”

STANDING UP SINGING OUT The Sarasota Youth Opera battles bullying with ‘Brundibár.’

hen 13-year-old Laura Dowden moved from Brazil to Sarasota two years ago, it didn’t take long for the bullying to begin.

As she adjusted to her new life, a group of girls in her fifth-grade class singled her out for being new and consistently excluded her from classroom activities.

“My classmates would say to me during recess, ‘You don’t belong here. You should leave and go away,’” she says.

But all that changed when, one day, Dowden decided to stand up for herself. She confronted the main girl

who was bullying her.

“I told her to stop,” she says. “I didn’t want it to happen anymore.”

And it didn’t. In fact, two years later, she and Dowden are close friends, and she’s using the experience for something positive. Dowden, along with other students in the Sarasota Youth Opera, are sharing their experiences in a stand against bullying.

Opening with two performances on Nov. 14, the Sarasota Youth Opera is performing one of the most affecting youth operas in its repertoire: “Brundibár.”

Written in Czechoslovakia in 1938 by composer Hans Krása and librettist Adolf Hoffmeister, the story shows a brother and sister standing up to an evil organ grinder who

prevents them from buying milk for their sick mother. The history of this quaint opera would end there, however. Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939.

The opera’s composer, original crew and cast were all killed in concentration camps.

Organizers and artists of the Sarasota Youth Opera saw bringing back “Brundibár,” which was last performed by the company in 1990, as a way for their students to confront intolerance in their hometown.

“When we decided we were going to do ‘Brundibár’ this season, we decided that we needed to do more than just explain the opera’s message to the kids and put it on the back of the program book,” says Jesse Martins, conductor for the Sarasota Youth Opera. “It’s then we started talking about having a prologue.”

The prologue, which will feature all 85 students in the company onstage, will include select students performing monologues of direct quotes from children’s diaries during tragedies like the Holocaust and genocides in Rwanda, Cambodia, Armenia and American slavery. And as the students bring new life into the voices from the past, directors wanted to connect the injustices of the past with the everyday bullying that’s become an all-toocommon component of today’s school experience.

“We wanted to show students that we can all do our part in little ways to stop intolerance,” says Martha Collins, stage director of the production.

Giffyn Stahlmann. Brown, 15 who attends Bay Shore High School, was plagued throughout middle school by a cyber bully over petty middle school relationship drama. But quickly, the messages became more aggressive, darker and a daily occurrence.

Brown’s bully would never pick on her in person, only through a screen, so she felt helpless. And when “Brundibár” gave her the chance to share her story, Brown wanted to help.

“Cyber bullying is such a huge thing in our generation,” she says.

“I wanted to share my story to let everyone know and raise awareness.”

Griffyn Stahlmann, 17, says he just wanted to feel better. Stahlmann has autism, and before he began homeschooling, he says he experienced bullying.

“I first didn’t know why I was being bullied,” he says. “Then I realized it’s because I’m autistic.

I got upset back then when I was bullied. For the show, I just wanted to share my story so people can really get to know the real me.”

And as Dowden, Brown and Stahlmann go into final rehearsals, they not only want to encourage other students who see the opera to tell their own stories and stand up for themselves, but they also want to affect the parents in the audience. They want everyone to know that bullying is still an issue. Only seven people in the troupe are sharing their personal stories, but nearly everyone in the 85-member company of students had a story of bullying to share.

“I think adults pay attention when kids call them out on something,” says Griffyn’s younger sister Skyler Stahlmann, 16. “That’s why shows like this have an impact. Because when kids get up onstage and say we notice something is wrong, that’s when adults do something about it.”

We recognized a need here. We wanted to do a local betterfor-you burger concept. We use locally sourced ingredients; we’re quick and affordable; and it’s a good community spot.

I’M LUCKY to have a really strong, motivated staff. These are kids that haven’t had a job before, and we get to teach them hospitality. It’s rewarding to see that. lex Floethe was looking for a cool burger spot. The Sarasota native got his first taste of the food industry while attending college in Dallas. After studying abroad, he returned to his hometown, where he and his brother agreed Sarasota needed a unique burger restaurant. So they decided to open S’macks Burgers & Shakes. We sat down with Floethe to talk burgers, custard school and how far he’s willing to go for a S’macks burger.

I STARTED OFF in the fine-wine industry in Dallas.

I cultivated my love for wine while I was studying abroad.

I traveled extensively through France, and that’s where I built my passion.

I WENT TO CUSTARD SCHOOL to learn how to make custard. The custard capital of the world is St. Louis, so I spent some time up there. I had to take pictures because my friends didn’t believe me

that there was such a thing. I learned about the differences between custard and ice cream.

We even did a custard crawl, visiting all the well-known custard places to compare.

WINE PAIRS WITH FOOD, so you need to know both of those things. When I moved back to Sarasota, I worked myself up in the food industry, from washing dishes in the back, to waiting tables, management and now, here.

Squinting at the blinding white sand from under a straw hat, Brian Wigglesworth sees something more in the acres of crystal quartz on Siesta Key Beach than an ideal volleyball court or a picnic area.

He sees art.

Wigglesworth, a master sand sculptor for more than a dozen years, says he got his start on the beaches of his native California, where people were drawn to his work.

“I’ve always had a crowd around me,” he says. “Even back then.”

It was only fitting then, that he helped found the Siesta Key Crystal Classic sand sculpting competition in 2010, along with fellow Siesta Key supporters Maria Bankemper, Marlene Roome, Mark Smith and Lourdes Ramirez.

Together, they hoped to promote tourism in the off-season, and in the following years, the event has become a destination.

Wigglesworth was on Siesta Beach Friday, Nov. 6, directing preparations for the competition, kicking off this Friday.

nership between the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce and Mote Marine Laboratory, to promote awareness of sea turtle conservation.

Organizers have spent the last eight months raising $250,000 in donations and sponsorships, and the work of 300 volunteers will culminate in the four-day event, whose economic impact is more than $2.5 million.

But before commencement, Wigglesworth and his small team have to set the stage.

He oversees a backhoe as it moves sand into 15-ton piles, each about 6 feet high. Sand is placed in stepped plywood structures that resemble ziggurats, doused, packed and then left to stand. It’s the sand-sculptor’s equivalent of digging marble out of a quarry.

All that remains is for 24 master sculptors to render something out of each pile.

Some are more technical, drawing out concepts weeks in advance, and some more romantic — Wigglesworth falls into the latter category.

“I’ll toss and turn in my sleep for days with an idea,” he says.

As one of the event’s organizers, Wigglesworth con’t compete, but he’ll build this year’s Christmas-themed sculpture, with which guests can pay to be photographed. Proceeds from the photos will benefit Manasota Operation Troop Support.

This year will also include events that have become crowd favorites, such as the “Quick Sand” timed sculpting competition and the amateur competition.

The event will also include sculpting lessons, food and retail from more than 60 vendors and a Kona Brewing party.

The international festival will bring 24 master sculptors from Russia, the Czech Republic and Ireland, and they will compete for $15,000 in prize money.

For now, Wigglesworth and his team will continue to gather sand from the excavation sites, pulling 600 tons of 99% quartz crystal from the top four inches of beach.

Near the shore, kids and adults do the same, albeit on a much smaller scale, with small shovels and buckets.

And that’s the reason, Wigglesworth thinks, events like the Crystal Classic have such a broad appeal. As he said, “Everyone’s had their time to play in the sand.”

For all the preparation, the art only lasts as long as the festival, and at the close of the event, all 600 tons of sand will return to the volleyball courts and picnic areas.

“It’s ephemeral,” says Wigglesworth. “You take all this time to prepare something — and then in a few hours, it’s gone.”

TURTLE TIME Mote Marine spokeswoman Hayley Rutger said the event helps Mote raise awareness about sea turtles, particularly of the work done patrolling 35 miles of beaches during nesting season, monitoring nests and collecting data. Attendees can view live marine specimens at Mote’s information booth.

“Being at the festival is a really cool way to let people know that during certain parts of the year these beaches have some really really old residents that come ashore to lay their nests — our sea turtles,” Rutger said.

The Sarasota Orchestra’s first Masterworks concert of the season was called “The Emperor,” after its centerpiece, Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. But that one title didn’t come close to covering the empirical intention of this performance.

Pairing Shostakovich with Beethoven is like taking two giants of music and partnering them in a seismic setting that’s sure to knock you for a loop.

We knew that the moment the orchestra began the Shostakovich “Festive Overture,” a vibrant fanfare that heralded the rest of the program. From the Olympian brass opening to the wonderfully rhythmic definition in the instrumentation, Music Director Anu Tali sculpted a distinctly clear and colorful sound.

Internationally renowned pianist Marc-André Hamelin has been garnering rave reviews in concert halls from the capitals of Europe to the major orchestras of America.

He was in Sarasota before, playing a solo recital for the Sarasota Concert Association, but this time, we had a chance to hear him in a concerto.

And not just any concert.

Beethoven’s Fifth and final

piano concerto, known as “The Emperor.”

Hamelin has an understated pianistic personality. To watch him at the keyboard, you might think, “No big deal.”

But he has technique to burn and an innate musicality that often makes the music new and fresh. The opening movement of the Beethoven was very fast but still breathed. Unfortunately, because of the tempo, it also lacked the depth of emotion and monolithic, vertical stature that makes Beethoven sound like Beethoven. The following movements, however, were beautifully paced.

Hamelin’s pristine, effortless technique, combined with the sublime accompanying of the orchestra deftly led by Tali, made for a beautifully proportioned rendering of this masterpiece. Tali tastefully teased the transition from the slow movement into the finale in a way that allowed Hamelin’s musicianship to flower and the music to bloom.

Then we all switched gears for the Symphony No. 5 by Shostakovich. This can be a dangerous work because the strings are so exposed, but the Sarasota Orchestra, in unison, sounded like one player.

And that wonder continued throughout the work.
