Nevaeh McCarthy is pursuing dance through the same Sarasota Ballet program her mother, Carla Burrell, attended nearly 20 years ago.

he news was like something out of a bad dream. Carla Burrell learned she was moving from her hometown of Sarasota to Clemson, S.C. Not only would the young Bay Haven student have to leave behind her friends, but she would also be leaving Dance — The Next Generation, Sarasota Ballet’s dance-outreach program, which she had come to love. Burrell joined the relatively new initiative in 1993, at her grandmother’s encouragement. The program, founded by Pavel Fomin to inspire young students to pursue dance, quickly piqued her interest, and leaving it behind was devastating. SEE PAGE 2

Local artist Truman Adams added a ton of color and the faces of Growler's Pub's staff to the back of the bar.

Growler’s Pub immortalizes its colorful crew It's not every day that you show up for work to find your face painted on the side of the building. But this week, Growler's Pub bartender Cabe Unger experienced such a moment when local artist and frequent collaborator Truman Adams was commissioned to paint the back wall of the bar. The once drab rear of the local pub has now been given a splash of color. Along with a rainbow collage, Adams has added portraits of Growler's Pub employees. "Truman has been here ever since we've been open," says Unger. "This is the second major mural he's done for us. We decided we wanted to paint the back, and we told Truman he could paint whatever he wanted. He comes in one day and says, 'I want to paint the staff.'" Unger admits it feels a little weird to have his face on the side of the building, but he says he’s happy that the back is now just as colorful and appealing as it is inside.
