Birch Students Create Thanksgiving Packages

Birch students from Brian Aplustille’s and Julia DiGiacomo’s classes wanted to make sure that Merrick families can enjoy a delicious feast of turkey with all the trimmings this holiday season.

“We wanted to take this opportunity to teach our students the importance of community service and giving back to our neighbors in need,” explained Aplustille.

“Each classroom participated in creating thanksgiving baskets that included food items that make up a thanksgiving dinner,” added DiGiacomo. “Students also raised money by helping at home and additional gift cards were purchased from local grocery stores.”

Classrooms had the opportunity to view all the baskets that were made, and students were able to reflect on their hard work and dedication. Students were encouraged to share the positive feelings that come from helping those in need.

All baskets were donated to the community cupboard in Merrick. Students from both Aplustille's class and DiGiacomo's S.A.D.D. club helped load all donations onto the delivery truck.
