Tia transforms factory wall

THE Ginger Factory had a wall that was crying out for creativity and knew it wanted something bright and cheerful that would pay homage to the flora and fauna found on site, in the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas. The factory wanted to work with a local artist, just as it did with Sophy Blake for The Rainbrella Project, and Tia Carrigan’s distinctive and dynamic artistic expressions instantly resonated with its aspirations particularly her murals in Pomona. In addition to being a captivating backdrop for cherished family photos, this wall also serves as the designated meeting point for the Ginger Factory’s fascinating Live Bee Show. Tia was given a simple brief to have ornamental gingers, bees and birds featured in her bright colour palette. So, with her tins of radiant paints and a 20-metre blank canvas, she set to work weaving her magic through every brush stroke. The factory was blown away with how quickly Tia transformed this plain wall into a work of art. Visitors loved watching Tia in her element and followed the journey through daily social media updates. Tia has authored and illustrated her very own book, The Little Bird Learns That Can’t Is Not A Word which the factory now proudly sells in its retail shop.

Guests had the opportunity to purchase a copy signed by Tia with a special personalised note. The Ginger Factory is delighted to be able to offer a second major art installation to visitors that will bring immense joy to all that see it.

As a free-entry park, visitors can come and view these installations 364 days of the year and the factory looks forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing everyone’s photos in front of the mural. If the Ginger Factory were to encapsulate the essence of this masterpiece in a solitary

word, it would undoubtedly be “happiness.” Go and experience it for yourself, and kindly share your photographs to partake in a competition. Visit www.gingerfactory.com.au to find out more!

MOVEMBER – CHANGING LIVES AND C H A L L E N G I N G FAC E S I N E U M U N D I WITH November rolling around it signals not only the heady tentative early steps into an Australian summer, but it also trumpets the return of that rare Australian mammal – the Movember Man. Come the first of November, otherwise clean shaven and facial fur bereft individuals are suddenly propelled into a cat and mouse game with their razors as they challenge themselves to grow moustaches and change the face of men’s health, all in the name of a very worthy cause – Movember. But it’s not all about the older fellas – this year the focus is on creating a vibrant and supportive Mo Tribe, with young people and ladies very much welcome to participate. Movember is an annual event commencing in November for the month. From humble beginnings in 2003 with 30 guys, the Movember movement has grown into a truly global one, inspiring support from over 6 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters across 20+ countries and supporting over 1,250 funded projects. Funds raised go to support the biggest health issues facing men: mental health, and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Men are dying on average 5 years earlier than women and largely for preventable reasons – including where males account for 75% of all suicide deaths. It’s not all about raising money though

HI MY NAME IS EDDY

– it’s about beginning conversations and challenging men to reach out and seek support, and to create a culture where men feel safe in asking for help. And the mighty men and women of Eumundi are banding together to again support this worthy cause. Since 2016, a rag tag group of misfits from across the region has joined the fight and ditched the razor, and in the process raised many thousands of dollars. With the support of the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi, events are organised, beers are shared, raffles are

raffled and conversations are started. This year there is a bunch of events organised and all are welcome: frisbee games, mental health walks and Hairy Hikes, a Drive-in movie night and a car rally. (Check out the ‘What’s on’ section) It all kicks off at the Imperial Hotel on Sunday November 5 in the beer garden from 3 to 6pm. To join in, for further info or to donate, please contact us at movembereumundi@gmail.com. Or search Facebook for ‘Eumundi Mo-Tribe’. And remember – ‘it ain’t scary to be hairy’.

MARIE Rene, Director of the Women and Girls Program at Hoofbeats, is a qualified Equine Program Facilitator with a Diploma in Horse Psychology from the Equine Psychotherapy Institute (EPI). Based in Victoria, the EPI, is a world class facilitator of equine therapy, running programs to train and qualify practitioners. Marie and Olivia Gerritse are both qualified to deliver EPI programs at the Doonan based charity. “We study Gestalt Therapy which is centred on increasing a person’s awareness, freedom and self direction, and we learn those concepts through the EPI,” Marie explains. “It is experiential therapy. I can tell you how to be more aware but if I bring you in the paddock and you actually experience it, then it starts to unravel the belief system you have created for yourself since childhood, to adapt and survive in society.” The therapy is an experimental approach to counselling, psychotherapy and mental Page 8 | Your Local Lifestyle November 2023

health whereby horses are the assistants, and the teachers, in the process. The physical nature of equine therapy, with a horse or horses in a paddock, is able to address parts of psychotherapy that are limited in room-based work. The invitation is to meet the horse, learn how they experience the world, and through this awareness and connection, see what we can learn from each other. Under the guidance of a skilled practitioner the client is safe and supported as they explore the possibilities that arise from the freedom of their new experience. Hoofbeats Sanctuary is a local charity run by founder and CEO Barb Blashki, as an initiative of her foundation, Kanyini Connections. Through the work of her foundation, Barb has been supporting the most vulnerable members of our community since 2009, including children with disabilities and families impacted by domestic violence. With a desire to focus on intervention and improve the lives of women and children at a community

level, Barb’s research led her to the positive impacts of equine therapy and the power it has to transform lives. Anna (not her real name) was desperate for something to change in her life. She had spent most of her adult life struggling from day to day and after fifteen years of conventional therapy and medication, she discovered equine therapy at Hoofbeats. Marie shared Anna’s journey with me. “Anna has a history of domestic violence. She also has PTSD from the violence and trauma in her past. She has a child who struggles with autism and they have lots of conflict. So what we do in the paddock is first we build trust, then we build a safe space, then when she is open to it, we talk about the PTSD, the triggers and how it impacts her.” For Marie, she understands the process her clients are starting because she has been there herself. As a young woman in her early twenties she dealt with feelings of unworthiness but it was the transformative experience of working with horses that

The hores have also found sanctuary at Hoofbeats improved her mental health and gave her the tools to change the course of her life. She brings this empathy and insight to her work. “For Anna, she really wanted to focus on how to get along with her son. So we did a few exercises with the horses where she tried to get the horses to do something with her. Once she worked with Phoenix who is

only two years old and she said it made her feel like she was with her teenage son. She learned a lot about her own boundaries and how having no boundaries actually impacts the horse, because the horse does whatever he wants when he’s around her.” Marie explained how during the course of the Recovery and Discovery program, learning to work with the horse, Anna grew in confidence and as she did, the horse began to respond positively towards her. “She is also recognising what is her comfort zone. Because she grew up in a family where she always felt unsafe, this was the only way to live that felt familiar to her. “She didn’t have the tools to recognise a healthy relationship where her boundaries would be respected. Which might explain her later relationship with a mentally abusive husband. How could she look for something she had never experienced before? “With her relationship with the horses and me, she experienced maybe for the first time safe contact with another human and a completely authentic relationship, because that’s how the herd is.” The therapy horses that make up the herd have been rescued from abusive situations and they have also found sanctuary at Hoofbeats. Marie says, the healing can go both ways. “Between the horse and the participant, sometimes beautiful things happen. One of our horses called Cappy, has horrific trauma of neglect and starvation. She has been abused and as a result she has very sensitive skin. She has a trauma response to being touched which could look like PTSD in humans.” Cappy who says no to being touched, formed a particular bond with Anna and through working on her self regulation skills, Cappy allowed Anna to pat her sensitive skin. “Horses can feel these things, they are very intuitive creatures.” The sanctuary also provides a great opportunity for the many volunteers who make it possible for Barb to operate, and for Olivia and Marie to deliver the programs. Marie says, “Our volunteers are essential. Without the volunteers there would be no sessions, no programs. They care for the horses and they are really committed. They spend a minimum of four hours per week. We have three shifts per day. The biggest team is the stable team.

“They make sure our horses are fed and healthy, and they clean the paddocks. We have the administration team too. The more volunteers we have, the more clients we can take on. They are essential. Without them we don’t work.” Many volunteers have been drawn to Hoofbeats, looking to fulfil something in their own lives, to meet people, make friends and to make a difference. “Some people don’t allow themselves to take time for them, if there is not the excuse of taking care of something else. Once you have that excuse, when you feel what it is like to take the time, it seeps through more parts of your life. It’s just a place where you can experience peace and harmony in your life.” Marie says for the volunteers the experience has many rewards. “They get to spend time around the horses. When we are all here, we giggle, they are happy, they get a sense of

community as well. Some volunteers make friends for life. It’s beautiful.” Go Remarkable is a program for 10 to 24 year old clients, based on establishing goals specifically for girls and young women who struggle with self confidence and anxiety. “Those girls experience what it is like to be in a healthy relationship, what it is to be heard and to say what they want to say without being judged. They can try and experience whatever they want. The only rules are no self harm or harm to horses.” Marie facilitates the one-on-one program, over one session per week, for twelve weeks. “We do activities and experiments to see what comes up for them and everything is in a safe space. So if we want to to explore anxiety, for example, we know we will explore anxiety in their window of tolerance. They never experience a full panic attack but at least they can get familiar with it and manage it better.”

The demand for equine therapy is strong, as people explore more holistic options for treatments to improve mental health.

The demand for equine therapy is strong, as people explore more holistic options for treatments to improve mental health. Marie and Olivia have a waiting list and would like to be able expand by introducing more horses and programs. Hoofbeats is currently on land provided by Sunshine Coast Council, but they are rapidly outgrowing the facility, which limits them to only ten horses due to space. Marie is hopeful that they will find their dream property locally. One that would give them 30 to 40 fenced acres of flat land with access to water and a building that could be adapted for administration. It would make it possible for them to be able to help more women like Anna. “After years of therapy, the problem for Anna was that every time she was telling her story, she got retraumatised. She learnt what it feels like to be calm and to be self regulated because she did it for someone else. She has a base. “That experience has stayed with her. So now she is trying to reach that state without Cappy. She is on her way. “She told me openly that this 12 weeks did change her life.”

Prime Minister’s Award for CONGRATULATIONS GSLC PTSD Dogs Australia’s CEO

ANGIE Weeks, CEO and Co-Founder of PTSD Dogs Australia was honoured this month winning the 2023 Prime Minister’s National Veterans’ Employment Award in the category of Partner Entrepreneur of the Year. The winners of the 2023 awards were announced by the Prime Minister the Hon Anthony Albanese MP and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs the Hon Matt Keogh MP on September 13 at an event in Canberra. The Awards are a platform to highlight

the remarkable skills and abilities in the veteran community, both as employees and entrepreneurs. The Awards also acknowledge organisations that actively recruit, employ and support veterans and their families in the civilian workforce. Angie and her husband Roger Weeks along with Accountant Julie Morrisson and Barrister Pattifield co-founded PTSD Dogs Australia as a non-profit organisation that rescues, trains and provides at no cost, service dogs for veterans and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In the five years since the organisation was established, Angie has trained more than 30 Assistance Dogs for veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD. “This is such an honour to be recognised for the work we do. It is so rewarding to see the transformative effects that the dogs have for their handlers. Reducing anxiety and depression and improving the overall quality of life of veterans and the positive impact that the dogs have had on their families, helping them to reconnect and improve their relationships,” said Angie Weeks. The fantastic work by PTSD Dogs Australia is done nearly entirely by volunteers and is funded entirely by donations, sponsorships and grants. If you’d like to support the organisation, go to www.ptsddogs.org.au.

The Good Shepherd Year 11 Formal event was a memorable night for all who attended. Students arrived in style, some even on bikes, and walked the red carpet, dressed in their most stylish outfits.

Festive Community Choir and ‘Mo-off’ Parade GET ready to start singing in November! Pomona and District Community House (PCH) needs your voices. The annual Pomona Night of Lights is set for Thursday, December 14 and this year we are creating a Festive Community Choir to perform on the night. PCH is joined by Clare from Those Folk who will lead the choir. You will get to sing a range of festive songs, including carols and connect with other like-minded folk. The choir is for all ages and voices. The choir commences rehearsals on Thursday, November 16, 6-7.30pm then meets weekly on Thursday nights until the performance at Pomona Night of Lights. Children under 15 years are to be accompanied by their adult. It’s a chance for young and old to sing their hearts out. Then on Sunday November 12 community has a chance to come together to support our men. It’s Movember. Let’s connect at Pomona Bowls Club over a day of free bowls, music by The Vibe, food and a ‘Mo-off ’ parade. The ‘Mo-off ’ is a chance for all those identifying as men in community to be supported and celebrated. Come show off your finely scaped mo or beard, fake or real in the ‘mo-off ’ parade. If you don’t have a mo then get creative at the crafting table with help from your kids, family or friends. A fun day for all ages.

R OTA RY PA R T N E R S W I T H B E N D I G O BA N K B R A N C H E S TO C O M BAT M A L A R I A THE Rotary Club of Cooroy is delighted to announce a collaboration with local Bendigo Bank branches on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie to introduce Rotary Foreign Coin Donation Boxes. These unique donation boxes accept foreign and local currency, with proceeds supporting Griffith University in Queensland’s efforts to develop a malaria vaccine. President Chris Durie, overseeing the program on the Sunshine Coast, emphasised the urgency, stating, “Every

five minutes, a child dies from malaria somewhere in the world.” Malaria, a widespread tropical health issue, claims over 700,000 lives annually and incapacitates millions. The disease is caused by a parasitic mosquito-borne infection. Bell Miners BELL Miners are more commonly known as Bellbirds. Most people will be familiar with their tinkling call, but few will have laid eyes on these olive-green birds. That’s because they tend to remain in the upper canopy of large gum trees. Like their cousins the Noisy Miners, Bellbirds are very territorial, defending their patch aggressively. It has been suggested that the constant chiming call acts as a warning to other bird species to stay away. Bellbirds live in colonies across their range. The southeast corner of Queensland is the northernmost extremity of their habitat. Their favourite food is the sugary secretion of small insects called psyllids. The psyllids suck the sap from eucalyptus leaves. This sap contains more sugar than the insects require, so they excrete the excess sugar and

starch as honeydew, also known as lerp. The insects use the lerp to make a little cone-shaped house for themselves on the leaf. Many creatures feed on these lerps and psyllids, including some possums and gliders, but it is the Bell Miner that has turned lerp production into intensive farming. The Bellbirds use their tongues to lever the lerp off the insect with out harming the psyllid nymph underneath. The insect simply makes a new house from its next meal, and thus more food for the Bellbirds. With the Bellbirds chasing off other birds that might eat the psyllids, the insects become so numerous that they eventually kill the gum trees. The birds then move on to a new set of trees, leaving behind dead trees with hollows for other species to enjoy. Bell Miners are an essential part of the ecosystem, even though they appear to be destructive.

New exhibition celebrates creative collaborations NOOSA Regional Gallery and Noosa Council are pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition that celebrates the diversity of creative collaborations on the Sunshine Coast. Known Associates explores the power and richness of partnership in creating art, the exhibition highlights current collaborative practices between artists and explores the possibilities of working together towards a shared outcome. “Most artists I know crave connection with like-minded creatives,” says Curator and Noosa Regional Gallery Director Michael Brennan. “This exhibition was an opportunity to bring together artists who are known to have practices in their own right, but who have also teamed up with a creative partner.” Setting out to interrogate and

celebrate creative collaboration across the Region, Known Associates features Courtney Scheu and Itamar Freed; Eco Trio (Rosie LloydGiblett, Yanni Van Zijl and Helena Jackson Lloyd); Ketakii JewsonBrown and Shaye Hardisty; Mia Hacker, Brian Warner and Kilagi Nielson; Studio 26 (Brady Cooke, Petalia Humphreys, Jaime Kiss, Jack Macrae, Alex Walker and Prita Yeganeh); and Tamara Kirby and Corrie Wright. Across six purpose-built spaces within the Gallery the exhibition will see shared ideas intertwined. While actively engaging the audience in some parts, Known Associates blends the vision of artists and audiences alike into unique evolutions of meaning and experience. ‘Known Associates’ will run until November 26. Entry to the event is free. www.noosaregionalgallery.com.au

More than a status: Our biosphere reserve celebrates community and environment ON November 3, communities around the globe celebrate their commitment to sustainability and living in harmony with their natural environment. The International Day for Biosphere Reserves is an invitation to take inspiration from solutions being applied in these regions to implement genuine sustainable development practices everywhere, with full respect for both nature and the living world. Year on year, the need for tackling environmental issues becomes more urgent as issues such as climate change, habitat loss and the survival of wildlife near a tipping point. UNESCO states that “Our relationship with nature and with other living beings needs a radical rethink in order to address these issues - we need to design and create a truly shared world.” Biosphere reserves around the world have shown that it is possible to establish a sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature. A biosphere reserve is an area declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as having achieved a notable balance between environment and sustainable human development.

These sites of excellence demonstrate local solutions to global challenges by involving local communities and all interested stakeholders in planning and management of three main functions: nature conservation and protecting biodiversity; scientific research and learning; and sustainable economic development that is socio-culturally and environmentally sustainable. Noosa is recognised globally for our rich biodiversity surrounding and weaving through a thriving urban population. In 2007, the Noosa Shire was the first region in Queensland to be designated Biosphere Reserve status, recognising decades of our community working together to live sustainably, in harmony with nature. Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation’s Rex Halverson says “It’s the Noosa community’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection over decades that lies at the heart of our prosperity and desirable lifestyle,” he said. Our region is special in that we now have three adjoining sites, with the neighbouring Great Sandy Biosphere Reserve (Burnett region) to our north, and Sunshine Coast Biosphere Reserve to our south. As part of a global network of 738

sites across 134 countries under the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves and the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves (WNICBR), the network provides a platform to share knowledge and develop approaches to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Just recently, the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation had the privilege of meeting with other coastal and island nations at the 11th Meeting of the WNICBR on Butchulla Country at K’gari. It was an opportunity for Noosa to share learnings and future focuses, collaborate with peers and hear how other biosphere reserves are approaching issues such as climate, protecting threatened species and working more closely with Traditional Owners. “To celebrate Noosa’s commitment to conservation and sustainable living, the Foundation established the Noosa Biosphere Awards to recognise those championing environment and sustainability practices within the Noosa Biosphere. “Now in its third year, we will be announcing this year’s finalists this month

Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Chair, Fiona Berkin at the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves conference on K’Gari.

with winners announced at a special event on November 30,” he said. The Noosa Biosphere Awards will be held on Thursday November 30 at the Sunshine Beach SLSC. Tickets are now on sale at noosabiosphere.org.au.

YOUR SEASONAL PRODUCE WATCH with Matt Golinski B E E T R O OT BEETROOTS are highly nutritious, easy to prepare and good value for money. They can be roasted, pickled, steamed or eaten raw, and add a splash of colour and sweetness to salads and roast vegetable mixes. They marry well with cheeses, nuts, yoghurt, and all meats from fish to beef. The leaves of small beets can be eaten raw in salads, while larger leaves are generally steamed or braised. There are lots of different varieties, including bright yellow golden beets and target beets like the ones I used in my recipe which I bought from the Mary Valley Country Harvest stall at the Saturday Pomona markets. Kenilworth Dairy produces an amazing haloumi which I have fallen in love with, it’s not too salty and cooks up beautifully crunchy and golden on the outside and gooey in the middle just the way haloumi should.

ROASTED BABY BEETS, GRILLED K E N I LW O R T H H A L O U M I , CHICKPEAS, ORANGE AND MINT INGREDIENTS: 2 bunches baby beets 200gm haloumi, cut into ½ cm slices 1 x 400gm tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 red onion, cut into wedges 2 oranges, peeled and cut into 8 pieces ½ cup fresh mint leaves 1 tsp Dijon mustard 30ml red wine vinegar 60ml olive oil salt and pepper METHOD: Lightly rub the beets with vegetable oil and roast at 180° for 20 -25 minutes or until tender when pricked with a knife. Rub off the skins with your hands or scrape off with a small knife and slice into circles or wedges. On a separate tray combine the chickpeas and red onion and drizzle with olive oil and salt, and roast for 20 minutes or until the onions are soft. Whisk together the mustard, vinegar and olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Lightly oil the haloumi slices and grill in a hot grill pan on both sides until crispy. Toss with the beets, chickpeas, red onions, orange, mint and dressing and serve while the haloumi is still nice and hot. Serves 4

Mushrooms

The mighty lion’s mane The Eastwell farms team

By Margie Wegener

I STUMBLED across Lion’s Mane mushrooms a few years ago when I was researching alternative ways to help my mum with depression, grief and general age-related cognitive decline. My search took me to websites all around the world, promoting the benefits of mushrooms as supplements, and in particular the wonderfully named Lion’s Mane variety. Last year I met Bryant and Susie Ussher when I visited their regenerative farm, Eastwell Farms, to learn more about their local beef production. To my surprise I discovered they also grew lion’s mane and other mushroom varieties at their Kin Kin farm. Susie’s son Alexander ThompsonWelch, works in the farm business, managed as a three-way partnership. He shares, “We first discovered the wonderful, diverse world of fungi in

2019 through Paul Stamets’ documentary Fantastic Fungi. It was a rabbit hole we were eager to dive into, and has become a massive part of the farm since.” Lion’s mane (Hericeum erinaceus) mushroom is a medicinal mushroom which has been used in eastern medicine for thousands of years as a supporting food for brain and gut health. Including a regular supplement is claimed to promote healthy gut bacteria and support nerve cell regeneration, thereby improving short-term memory, boosting mood and providing daily clarity. Alex says, “We grow it on our farm alongside our oyster and reishi mushroom. Many people don’t realise you can replace

common pharmaceutical medicines with mushrooms. We already sell lion’s mane, which supports your immune system, gut health, and cognition. Reishi supports your mind and relaxes your body. We do all of this on the Sunshine Coast, naturally and chemical-free. We will soon branch out into more varieties of medicinal mushrooms like turkey tail.” Eastwell Farms are one of a growing number of paddock to plate producers in the region. They offer home-delivered beef across the Sunshine Coast and sell beef and mushrooms to restaurants and food producers. You can also find their products locally at Tewantin Market Garden, Yandina Market Garden, Sunshine Beach General

Store and Go Vita Gympie. They sell lion’s mane and oyster mushrooms fresh at the Yandina Country Markets and the dried and powdered medicinal mushrooms are available through their website. The family are dedicated to the Kin Kin farm and regenerative farming is at the heart of their primary producing, whether it is livestock or mushrooms. Bryant Ussher, a third generation farmer, is an inspirational and influential advocate of ecological farming practices, dedicated to improving local biodiversity. Alex brings youth and fresh skills to the family farm. “I manage the mushroom production, retail, wholesale, accounting, socials, website and the markets. We’re trying to hit quite a few verticals simultaneously, and with that comes the need for a diverse skillset. I’ve got two bachelors in computer science/IT management, so that helps bring a skillset most farms don’t have direct access to.” He is passionate about the ability of mushrooms to resolve common ailments. “I’m a firm believer and advocate for a regimen of medicinal mushrooms in everyone’s diet. Lion’s mane, cordyceps, turkey tail and reishi changed my life. Lion’s mane in particular is a wonder-shroom. We don’t grow cordyceps or turkey tail yet, but stay tuned.” The more we learn about fungi and how vital mycelium is for all living organisms, the more understanding we have of nature, and potentially ourselves. It’s the organism that everyone is talking about. “Lion’s mane has changed my life. It’s completely shifted my ability to focus, given me clarity and boosted my mood. I am overall a better person because of the mighty lion”, Alex says with a smile.

MARY Valley artist Heinke Butt brings the stunning beaded garments of the Ndebele women of South Africa to Gympie Regional Gallery in her new exhibition. This multi-media exhibition reveals how the women use their garments as cultural identity and creative expression. This exhibition is the outcome of a PhD research project that gives a deep insight into how the women of the Ndzundza Ndebele tribe became the custodians of their unique cultural identity in the face of the adverse conditions they endured for over 2000 years. Heinke was born in South Africa during the Apartheid era. The horror of Apartheid and the issue of identity creation by individuals has been a recurring question throughout her life and continues to be a focus in her art. The exhibition runs until November 25. Heinke will also present an artist talk at the gallery on November 18.

In a dazzling homage to the golden era of jazz, soul, and cabaret, Melissa Western and her world-class all-female band invite audiences in Maleny, Pomona, Coolum and Eudlo to step back in time to 1954, a year that witnessed the remarkable careers of three legendary women in music - Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and Eartha Kitt. 1954: Ella, Etta, Eartha celebrates the ground breaking contributions of these iconic artists and their indelible influence on the world of music. Melissa Western, a powerhouse performer known for her captivating stage presence and velvety voice, brings this spectacular tribute to life. Her performance has been hailed by critics as “feisty, highly enjoyable,”

and her “aptitude for music is vast and versatile.” With her extensive musical talent and dedication to research, Melissa has crafted a show that not only honours the musical genius of these artists but also delves into their inspiring life stories. 1954: Ella, Etta, Eartha is not just a musical journey; it’s a testament to the indomitable spirit of these women who defied prejudice, poverty, and abuse to rise above the challenges of their time. Melissa Western explains, “As my understanding of the mid-’50s developed, I was drawn to the stories of Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, and Etta James. Though very different in their styles of music, I noticed this common thread of genre trailblazing, of three women of colour breaking glass ceilings all around them and paving the way for so many who followed after them.” The show is a blend of nostalgia, history,

and exceptional musicality. It’s a captivating journey that showcases the resilience and artistry of these iconic figures while immersing the audience in the atmosphere of the 1950s. Accompanying Melissa on stage is an incredibly talented allfemale jazz band featuring some of Brisbane’s finest musicians, including Jayde Ellingson on bass, Grace King on drums, Cassie Whitehead on sax and Peta Wilson on keys. Playing the Majestic Theatre, Pomona Friday November 10, 7pm. Full details: www.redchair.com.au

Jelly Roll Morton

Joseph ‘King’ Oliver

THE Noosa Heads Jazz Club Inc. celebrates two luminaries of Traditional Jazz this November. Jelly Roll Morton born 1885 and named Ferdinand Lamothe, began playing in New Orleans ‘sporting houses’ around the turn of the century. His pre-1923 activities are shrouded in legend. He started playing piano when he was ten, worked in the bordellos of Storyville while a teenager (for which some of his relatives disowned him) and by 1904 was traveling throughout the South. He is regarded as the first true jazz composer with hits such as Snag It, Wolverine Blues, and The Chant. He loved to show it off with extravagant suits and

cars, and having a diamond embedded into one of his teeth. Joseph ‘King’ Oliver performed with many bands around the USA and in 1922 returned to Chicago to lead his own ‘Creole Jazz Band’ at Lincon Gardens. It was this band that Louis Armstrong was to join as second cornetist. Other bands he led included the Dixie Syncopators. As a composer his hit tunes included Snake Rag, Canal St Blues and Dr Jazz. Playing at the Majestic Theatre Pomona, Thursday November 23, 1 to 3.30pm. Tickets $30 +Booking fee. Members $5 discount. For further details and tickets head to www. noosajazzclub.com

With lyrical, soaring and earthy prose, verse, and song, the most controversial poet of the mid-century stages a twenty-hour midnight pub crawl of a Welsh fishing village exposing the victorious and the venal among the denizens of a provincial sea side town. Get creative and festive at Cooroy Butter Factory

CHRISTMAS is around the corner and the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) has so many great exhibitions and workshops coming up. Are you at a loss buying Christmas presents? Try something different and fun. CBFAC is offering a fun-filled creative workshop November 11 and 18. In this fast-paced workshop you get to create five gorgeous, bespoke handmade pottery presents. First week you make the pottery pieces and the second week you glaze them. Eclectica, the CBFAC annual members exhibition is coming up fast. Again lots of prizes are on offer – cash prizes between $300 and $1000 for different categories. This year a new prize is being offered that explores sensuality and the body... something a bit risqué. $1000 is on offer for this prize. Entered works for this prize will be shown upstairs and CBFAC will run some life drawing classes in the space during the exhibition. There are major prizes for overall winner, landscape, abstract, animal, and ceramic themes. Painting, Sculpture, Craft/ Design and Digital mediums are accepted. How do you enter? Become a Friend of the CBFAC and you are automatically able to exhibit in this exhibition. Go to the CBFAC website to join… but don’t delay.

During the Eclectica exhibition, we celebrate Christmas in Cooroy on Friday December 8, with lots of entertainment and our extensive Christmas market that surrounds the CBFAC building. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. There are some fabulous exhibitions taking

place right up to November 19. Shows by Anne White, Kym Barrett and Cheryl McGannon, Noosa District High School and Art Brut provide an incredibly diverse menu for art lovers. Finally, there will be an artist in residence in the house, supported by Eumundi Guesthouse.

A NEW exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre invites you to have your curiosity provoked. Pomona artist Ann White has created 23 works on the theme of Mapping the Pathway. A mix of landscapes and interiors, each painting or drawing entices the viewer to look past the immediate and wonder what is beyond. Almost half the works are of, in and around Pomona, but not as it’s usually presented. Others are from further afield. All are from the point of view of a walker or visitor looking along. “I try to express a story in each work, with light, depth and perspective being key to inviting the viewer,” says Ann. Mapping the Pathway is on show until November 19.

Decoding wine selection Exploring Verdelho and Cabernet Sauvignon

FOR part three the two varieties I have chosen for this article are Verdelho and Cabernet Sauvignon. Verdelho varieties come from the island of Madeira, an autonomous Portuguese outpost off the coast of Morocco. Imported to Australia in 1825 Australian Verdelho is grown from coast to coast, though two states are generally recognised as the producers of the finest examples. Western Australia (in particular the Margaret River and Swan Valley regions) produces beautiful Verdelhos, tending towards golden apple and citrus zest, with tropical notes and floral spice. The New South Wales Hunter Valley’s display lovely acidity, as well as having the floral tropical fruit flavours. Cabernet Sauvignon is a somewhat regal status variety. Cabernet Sauvignon has the ability to express a unique character nearly anywhere it’s planted. But not all Cabernets are created equal.

The muscle and opulence of the Napa Valley, where it’s known as the ‘king of grapes’ contrasts with Bordeaux where its presence has been long and more complex. In Australia, two different and distinctive Cabernet kingdoms have developed: Margaret River and Coonawarra. Margaret River produces mediumbodied Cabernets of elegance, complexity and transparency. Almost all wear a crown of briny sea spray, pencil lead, eucalyptus and currant. Coonawarra has 130 years of wine history, the region famed for its rich, sturdy Cabs etched in dark berry fruit, mint and dried herbs. I also suggest reading the back label when you have selected. Happy hunting.

BOOKS with Hayley Saunders SALT RIVER ROAD – MOLLY SCHMIDT DEBUT West Australian author Molly Schmidt had a clear vision when she set out to write her first novel Salt River Road. She wanted to create a story that “actively pursues reconciliation between indigenous and nonindigenous people”, while at the same time honouring the traditional custodians of the land where the novel is set. Salt River Road explores these issues through the lives of the Tetley family – five siblings and their father Eddie, who are falling apart after the death of their mother. The children are struggling with their own emotions and the impact of losing their mum, but Eddie can’t see through his own grief to help. The novel uses the voices of Rose and Frank, the middle siblings, once so close but now unable to find their way back to each other. Frank begins to spiral out of control, moving into the shed and cutting off communication while Rose is overwhelmed with the responsibility of trying to keep the family together. Luckily, Noongar Elders Patsy and Herbert seem to know exactly when to step in to help, offering a safe space for both Rose and Frank at different times. However, when they rescue Rose from running away and deliver her back to the house, their presence stirs up some sad memories that Eddie has been doing his best to forget. Rose is drawn to Patsy and Herbert, their knowledge and understanding of country, the power of belonging, both to the land, and to the community. Can this understanding help to heal the broken Tetley family before it’s too late? Salt River Road explores the bond between family of birth, and family of choice, using the harsh West Australian landscape as a backdrop. Zonta Clubs worldwide actively participate to highlight the Zonta International Campaign, which is committed to eliminating violence against women and girls. It is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating human rights violations in our world today. Violence knows no boundaries; it transcends age, background, and education level. Erin Yarwood SPRING TO IT! with & FESTIVE FOCUSED with ERIN YARWOOD CHRISTMAS is literally just around the corner… and although we’re only in November, now is the time that all the festivities seem to start kicking off and continue until the new year. And although it can be extremely fun, it can be quite taxing and take a toll on you both physically and mentally… So now is the perfect time to be mindful in setting yourself realistic and achievable goals in maintaining wellness and sanity during this rather jolly old time! Between staff parties, end of year break ups, family dos and everything in between… there’s bound to be a fair bit of eating and drinking going on, and simply being merry. Which is fun and completely necessary – don’t get me wrong. We’ve all got to let our hair down. BUT… make sure you’re still moving your body, eating well and keeping up your regular routine amongst the festive chaos to not only keep you fit, but feeling good in general too. It would be such a shame to waste all your focus and determination on your physical health for the year from a few overindulgent shindigs. KEEPING ACTIVE Don’t be too hard on yourself… the festive

season is meant to be festive! But try to make it your challenge to keep an active routine up during this time. It may be less than you normally do – so don’t beat yourself up about that. But choose something that’s fun, achievable and active enough to keep you feeling great! EATING WELL Nothing quite beats a good old Christmas pudding, with all the trimmings of course! Or all the delicious gooey cheese platters we get offered and consume at every function. And who can resist a fluffy pavlova, smothered in whipped cream and summer fruits! Paired with refreshing wines, beers, cocktails and eggnog… the list really does go on. My mouth is watering just thinking about these festive treats. So, my suggestion to you is to make sure you enjoy each mouthful of these delights, but in moderation. And make sure you’re still eating your healthy choices and drinking plenty of water in between. So whatever hard work you have put into YOU this year, do yourself a favour and don’t waste it all during the last month or

two of the year. Make it your mission, your Christmas treat to yourself to keep working on yourself, whatever that may involve. That way you will be kicking off your 2024 with loads of energy, confidence and pizazz! Ex

Across the generations at SconeTime ON Tuesday October 10, some of the Year 9 Leaders from Noosa District State High School volunteered at the community event, ‘Scone Time’. This event provided an excellent opportunity for these students to interact with the senior members of our community and share experiences across the generations. Students helped with the preparation and serving of scones, tea, and coffee at the monthly gathering which for some of us, was a little scary at first as pouring hot tea is something of an art form! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed assisting with the tea and scones but more importantly conversing with the older people. We had the privilege of listening to live music, joining in the birthday celebrations, and listening to the wonderful stories of the past, straight from the hearts and minds of people who have so much more life experience than we do. The organiser Martin Duncan welcomed the student volunteers with open arms

and the hospitality provided by the other volunteers left a long-lasting impression and an eagerness to return next month. We can’t wait to be back in November! With thanks Emily Nelson and Harley Crebert

NUTRITION with Sarah Gray MALNUTRITION A SILENT EPIDEMIC!

WHEN you hear the word malnutrition your mind instantly goes to a third world country where food sustainability is non existent. But what if I was to tell you malnutrition is rampant in Australia. In fact 10 – 35% of us are under nourished and are suffering from malnourishment in the broader community. In residential care it can be as high as 72% of our aged community that are affected. A silent epidemic it often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed. Up to 83% of us believe that it is impossible for people in Australia to be malnourished. We are not living in a third world country so many of the

warning signs are ignored even by close family and friends. I believe that education is the key when it comes to food sustainability and good nutrition. Below are some signs of malnutrition that we can all keep an eye out for: • Unplanned weight loss • Lack of interest in food or drink • Inability to concentrate • Loosing focus often • Lack of appetite • Feeling tired all the time, even with a sedentary lifestyle. • Feeling generally weaker than usual • Getting sick often. • Slow recovery from illness. Interestingly, people suffering from malnutrition may be overweight OR underweight. Secondly, somebody addicted to junk-food is in the high-risk category for malnourishment. Thirdly, children and the elderly are the most vulnerable. If you have any concerns for yourself or a loved one, please reach out to a professional today. There is lots of help out there, you just have to ask. You are what you eat! www.foodtrition.com.au, @foodtrition1

L L E W O ’ B R I E N Federal Member for Wide Bay EARLIER this year the Kin Kin quarry operator lodged an application under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity and Conservation (EPBC) Act to clear more than 8 hectares of remnant vegetation that is identified as core critical koala habitat, as well as habitat for the greater glider and grey headed flying fox. The EPBC assessment process requires the applicant to make a referral to the Minister, Tania Plibersek via the Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, whose role is to apply the law to protect Australia’s unique animals, plants, habitats, and places. At the time of writing this column, the application is now subject to a request for further information. The Federal Environment Minster has asked the Kin Kin Quarry operator for additional details before she makes her decision. While I am hopeful the Minister will recognise the terrible impact this land clearing proposal will have on this patch of critical local habitat, I am concerned that this Minister has already given the green light to clearing essential koala habitat to make way for a wind farm near Rockhampton. In 2020, the former Coalition government refused to allow the operators of the Lotus Creek wind farm to clear 341

hectares of old growth forest to install 55 wind turbines on the Nebo-Connors Range. Fast forward to a change of government in 2022, and Minister Plibersek overturned this decision and gave the go ahead to clear the forest that has been described as “koala central”. I sincerely hope that the Minister’s decision to bulldoze koala habitat to make way for an industrial scale energy project is not an indication that the Labor Government is prepared to pursue ideology ahead of our endangered species. As the quarry already held development approval, they do not require any further local or state government approvals to clear this vegetation. I have written to Minister Plibersek to convey my objections to this land clearing proposal and have not yet received a response. The Federal Government has no role in regulating the quarry’s day to day operations or activities, however, the proposed vegetation clearing at the site triggers the need for EPBC Act assessment as the activity is likely to have a significant impact on local threatened species and ecological communities. I encourage everyone who is concerned about this clearing proposal to email Minister Plibersek at minister.plibersek@ dcceew.gov.au.

It has been a big two weeks in the lead up to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum. It was especially big for all the volunteers. In Fairfax, over 65.6% of voters rejected the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Voice to Parliament. While I am relieved by the outcome, I am also very aware that many Australians are disappointed by the result. This outcome does not mark the time to celebrate. Rather, it marks a time to unite as a community, as a country and to now pave forward a practical way to improve the lives of indigenous Australians. Like all Australians, the Coalition wants Indigenous disadvantage truly addressed. To all the volunteers - thank you for your time. LO C A L C H A M P I O N S

As part of our local sporting champion grants, I recently had the pleasure of reviewing federal funding grants for many aspiring athletes in the region. The applicants were approved for funds to help them reach their sporting goals. From hockey to water polo, surfing to football, it is inspiring to see such a diverse range of sports and young people pursuing their dreams. Congratulations to all the recipients!

I had the pleasure in welcoming over 500 new Australians at a Sunshine Coast Australian Citizenship Ceremony recently. It is incredible to see so many people thrilled to call Australia their home. We truly have the greatest country on Earth, and these ceremonies are humble reminders of that fact. I never tire of the opportunity to visit such momentous events. To our newest Australian citizens, ‘congratulations and welcome home.’

has been charged with examining youth justice, and the state’s crime epidemic. My hope is that we will be able to hear directly from the experts, including front line police officers, about the legislation and resources they need to allow them to do their jobs, and keep our community safe. I look forward to sharing more updates as our work gets underway. In the meantime, as always I welcome your feedback on this important issue. In other news, I am looking forward to heading back from Parliament at the end of this week to attend the Walk for Daniel on Friday. This is a significant day for many of us as we remember and honour the life of

Daniel Morcombe and a reminder to have those conversations with young people about personal safety, stranger danger, and staying safe online. This weekend I’ll also be launching my new Community Canteen – a specially modified barbeque trailer available to hire for your next community event! D A N P U R D I E State Member for Ninderry LAST week, I hosted my second community crime forum in conjunction with the Bli Bli Community Association. Around 40 locals attended the event, where our local police gave an update on the work they are doing to help keep us safe. Although crime rates have increased on the Coast, we are extremely lucky compared to other parts of the state, where the same juvenile offenders in stolen vehicles are chasing the police, and the police are powerless to stop them. When I transferred to the Sunshine Coast 10 years ago, there were 30 officers and 1 Officer in Charge at Nambour Station.

Page 34 | Your Local Lifestyle November 2023

In that time, the approved strength hasn’t grown, and its common to find only around 24 officers on roster at any given time. In the same time, the population in some parts of the Nambour division, such as Bli Bli, has doubled. Coupled with weaker laws, especially in relation to juveniles, it’s no surprise our hard working police feel like they’re working with one arm tied behind their back. Given the issue of law and order is something I am passionate about, I was very proud to recently be appointed to the new Parliamentary Select Committee for Youth Crime. This committee, chaired by my neighbour, Noosa MP Sandy Bolton,

PINK UP COOROY

a true community event A HUGE thank you to the hinterland businesses and community for making our Pink up Cooroy fundraiser, at the Cooroy RSL such a huge success. The fundraising hasn’t been finalized but will be close to $20,000 raised! With the support of the 64 businesses listed we had a huge prize pool for the multi raffle and auction. A big thanks to the generous donation of a natural pink 0.09 carat diamond from Trevor and Averil Wilcox. The Cooroy RSL did an amazing job of serving 160 scrumptious breakfasts made by Chef Paul and his team and served up by Helen, Leanne and a great group of RSL staff who volunteered their time to make sure the fundraiser was a success. Thanks to Brenda Thompson and Kerry Martin for checking guests in on the day. Jackie Zipf showcased her up-cycle creative clothes modeled by 10 cute children. Thanks to

Jackie and the parents of the young models. Pink up Cooroy MC and auctioneer Richard Hansen with the help of Polly Back also did an exceptional job. Live life Pharmacy, Patches of Cooroy and Cooroy Golf Jokers group all gave sizable cheque donations. Thanks to our special guests Rachael Stevens - a McGrath Foundation breast care nurse, Sara McGrath, Mayor Clare Stewart and Councilors Karen Finzel and Amelia Lorentson, as well as Cooroy Chamber President Sirah Robb. Peter Zipf, Gary Christensen and Brett Hill helped Pink Up Cooroy by getting the banners up in the streets, thanks boys and thanks to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for keeping this fundraiser as one of their events. I’ve been involved with raising funds and awareness about breast cancer for over 10 years now in Cooroy and this year three special people stepped up to help me. The team from Your Local Lifestyle. Lil Staff helped with social

media, Janet Webb helped with graphics and seeking donations, planning and letting her office turn pink for months. Lesley Maxfield collected donations and sprinkled her creative touch over all of the donations and tables at the event. Thank you. You can still add to the final amount raised by buying a schnitzel at the Cooroy Hotel, Cooroy RSL and Your Mates Bowls Club in October - a gold coin will go to the McGrath Foundation. Make sure you like and share our Facebook page - ‘Pink Up Cooroy’ to stay up to date with the final tally for 2023 and everything happening in 2024. Pink Up Cooroy is a true community event and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting it. I love my town and look forward to turning it Pink in 2024.

Revival of the Richmond birdwing butterfly

Dutchman’s pipe vine (Artistolochia elegans)

THE Richmond birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia) is the largest subtropical Australian butterfly, found only in subtropical northern New South Wales and Southeast Queensland. Its populations have declined in Queensland since the 1920s following the loss and fragmentation of their habitats, mainly rainforests. Clearing and inappropriate burning of understorey vegetation, weed pressure, and the ongoing habitat loss through development, mining and clearing continues to threaten this butterfly today. A key nemesis of the butterfly is the Dutchman’s pipe vine (Aristolochia elegans), a formerly cultivated exotic species from South America and a Category 3 Invasive Plant in Queensland. The Dutchman’s pipe emits an odour that

tricks the adult butterfly to lay her eggs on this vine, and not the birdwing butterfly vine (P. praevenosa). Sadly, when eggs hatch on the Dutchman’s Pipe the caterpillars are poisoned by eating the leaves. Noosa Landcare has been an active and proud member of the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network (RBCN) for many years now. Powered by a collection of passionate individuals, groups, and organisations, the RBCN is dedicated to the conservation of the Richmond birdwing butterfly and its host plants, the birdwing butterfly vine and mountain aristolochia (P. laheyana). For over 20 years, Noosa Landcare have been propagating the birdwing butterfly vine, supporting the re-introduction of this vine throughout south-east Queensland. It has brought the organisation so much joy

Our poolside services include:

to receive the many reports and photos of butterflies visiting our customers planted vines. Last year alone, we grew and sold 2,000 vines! The participation and enthusiasm from our community in helping create more habitat for the Richmond birdwing butterfly has been extraordinary. For a couple of seasons now, we have noticed Birdwing larvae chewing on our P. praevenosa vines in the nursery too. An accidental captive breeding program! Last year we were lucky enough to witness a lovely healthy female birdwing butterfly emerge from a chrysalis – a special moment for all of us here at Noosa Landcare. We invite members and our wider community to join us in helping establish more vines in our region. We have plenty of mature vines in stock at the HinterHub store in Pomona or you can order directly

from our production nursery team. Visit www.noosalandcare.org. We also urge our community to please be on the lookout for Dutchman’s pipe on your property and your local bushland areas. If you have the vine on your property, please consider taking the appropriate steps to remove this vine. Report your sightings via the QR code. Your sighting information will help Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network to build a database of birdwing butterfly distribution across Queensland and NSW.

BUDERIM FALLS

Easy walk for the litt le

THESE beautiful falls also known as ‘Serenity Falls’ are hidden away in 45 hectares of tropical heaven on the northern side of Buderim. The falls offer a lovely day out for the whole family. You can enter from the top via Quorn close or the bottom via Harry’s Lane with parking at both entrances. Entering from the bottom for the first time was enjoyable, with a wide wooden elevated 600m board walk that helps minimise the impact on the vegetation and making it suitable for wheelchairs and prams. Once the board walk ends it’s a short 300m trail walk on a cobble stone path alongside the creek. We enjoyed the sound of the water running over the rocks before it cascades over larger rock formations into small rock pools. It’s so pretty with the birds singing happily in the background. As you reach the falls you will have to cross the creek which involves a little rock hopping. It’s time to get out your camera as you will now see the high arch Serenity Bridge with the falls as its back drop. The bridge is also a great vantage point to view the falls.

ones

At the falls you can enjoy a dip in the cool water or experience the curtain of cascading water from behind. If you have little ones with you a few snacks are good to enjoy at this point. The water flows all year-round and is spectacular after rainfall. Once you have taken in the beauty these falls have to offer, you can head over the bridge and do a loop. This will take you up through the rain forest past the top entrance and back down, an approximately 600m round trip. The whole trail is 2.6km so you can do as little or as much as you like. Buderim Falls are very popular especially in summer. I recently went on a Monday and it wasn’t crowded at all. As for fitness level we did the 900m walk from Harry’s Lane at the bottom with my two year old granddaughter and she absolutely loved it. Picnic tables and toilets are available at both entrances, but dogs are not permitted. Always remember to take plenty of water, hat and sunscreen. It’s going to be a hot one this summer! Happy Hiking - Andrea

Bird nesting time WILVOS are certainly feeling the pressure of human impact on our wildlife at the moment. Our WILVOS 5441 6200 Hotline number always tells the story. It is nesting time for our birds at the moment and they have so much to contend with, just with Mother Nature alone. A day of high winds means baby birds are blown out of nests. Fortunately, people now know to get the chicks checked and then they can place them back, in a man-made nest, in the tree containing the original nest, or placed in a nearby tree. Observing from a distance, parents are soon seen back feeding their young. The birds are ecstatic to see the family reunited and so are we! As wildlife carers we do our best, but parents are even better at rearing their young. In these past weeks a variety of birds of all ages have come into care. Egg incubators have hatched chicks, along with humidicribs housing the very small chicks, and brood boxes providing consistent temperatures for the growing youngsters. Pigeons have been my highlight over past weeks. A tiny little crested pigeon was found at the base of a palm tree, below a nest where a python had made a meal of her siblings. She is now flying gracefully, though still being supplemented with food. Soon after this, a topknot pigeon

Tommy Topknot Pigeon after just 8 days in care

chick came into care - a solid little creature with bald head and pin feathers emerging from wings and tail. He has grown at an incredible pace and only ten days later he is grooming his feathers and showing the beginning of his weird topknot. He is always ready to open his big beak! Such primeval looking birds when mature. Topknots are huge fruit eaters and wonderful seed dispersers in our rainforest habitats. How privileged we are in Australia with our amazing birdlife.

With free registration, how-to guides, and promotional resources available, anyone can host a garage sale easily, and find where to go to grab a bargain, across two big weekends - November 11 and 12, and November 18 and 19. Noosaville resident Justin said his family was pleased to get involved and part with things they no longer needed. “This way you know the things you no longer need are going to someone who wants them so it’s great for the environment and the conscience,” he said. “It’s a great project for the kids to get behind, as it helps teach them about the circular economy and gives them a way to make a bit of pocket money,” he said. Noosa Council’s Waste Coordinator, Mark Borgert, said the Garage Sale Trail initiative supported Council’s goal of reducing waste and boosting recycling. “Hosting a garage sale can feel daunting, but our involvement gives residents access to handy guides for setting up a garage sale and help to promote it, including listings on the Garage Sale Trail website.” Mr Borgert said participation was open to community groups and charity

MTB The Victory Labyrinth

LET’S take a look at our Gympie trail centre. The Victory trails are located on the north eastern edge of Gympie at Victory Heights. The staging point for this network is a good sized carpark with toilets at the corner of Wolvi Rd and Barton Rd. These trails are classified multi-use but don’t let this put you off as there is plenty of variety here, everything from beginner loops, to flow and jump lines that will challenge even the most adventurous and talented riders. The Vic is a smallish parcel of council land approximately 1.5km long by 300m wide, that has been worked by volunteers into a 25km labyrinth of very nice windy single trails. There isn’t a lot of elevation but what there is has been utilized to perfection. I’ll come back to this. The entrance is just to the left of the toilets. From here we can go right and enjoy a short green loop on Kangaroo, including some small jumps, a short tunnel and a bridge. Next we have a couple of jump lines that run down to the left of the fire trail, the one closest is intermediate and the next one across is more advanced as it has a platform qualifier that you have to jump off to start the run. Both finish a little way down the fire trail so only a short ascent back to the beginning to do a few reps. Next is the beginning of the Labyrinth, trail 4 (Gully), it starts just to the left of the advanced jump line. As with most of the trails here it nice and windy and undulating and that takes you deeper into a network that keeps on giving. If you like a challenge look out for the many skinny log rides off to the edge of the trails, one even crosses a creek that may or may not be dry; there is a bridge for those that prefer not to chance a dip. The trails are mostly numbered and the higher the number the further you will be from the start, 9.1 being the furthest. The park is split lengthways by a couple of fire roads so you are never more than a couple of kilometers from

your car. You will come across a few places where the trail labelling may seem a little odd, for example like this 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4. These are spots that have trail variations that mostly lead back to the same start point.

These trails get plenty of love from the local mountain bike club so you will often find trails closed for repair or trails that have been upgraded with bigger jumps than you may be expecting, so always ride for the unexpected. As

Cooroy Service Centre

mentioned, these are multi-use trails so always give way to other users. Till next time, ride safe and keep the rubber down. Andy Flanagan – Adventurer, Mountain Biker and Senior Mechanic at SpokeNTrail

Youth Boxers make a clean sweep in USA IT’S been a very busy month for the team at Impact Boxing and things do not look like slowing down anytime soon. The amateur boxing team have been kept busy with state training camps and competing. There are also some big things happening with future bouts to be announced for the professional boxing team. The Pee Wee boxing program is also back in full swing. On top of all this Team Impact’s head coach and owner Mark Evans has just returned from a very successful trip to the USA as Boxing Australia’s appointed Lead Coach. Evans led a team of six Youth boxers to the USA where they competed in the annual Rip City boxing tournament in Portland Oregon. The team won every bout at this tournament and were also awarded the best team of the tournament. “With a clean

sweep at this tournament it’s fair to say that I was extremely proud of these kids. All six are current National Champions and all were tested with the best that the

Americans had in their individual age and weight categories. This has once again been a great measuring stick for us to gauge where we are at on the World stage. When

you beat the Americans on their home soil I guess you know we are doing something right with our kids,” Evans said. The team then travelled to L.A. for a three day training camp, training in various L.A. Boxing gyms. The highlight of this part of the trip was training with World renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach at his Wild Card gym. “Freddie was in awe of our Aussie boxers and their skill set,” Evans said. A quick five day turn around and Coach Mark Evans is off again. This time he is in the Solomon Islands delivering a five day coaching and high performance camp with their National team. Upon his return from the Solomon Islands Team Impact will be heading to NZ for a two day boxing tournament. Certainly busy times for the Impact Boxing crew. Coach Mark Evans
