It’s time for a ‘Bloody Long Walk Sunshine Coast’

ON Sunday June 4, more than 1,300 people will walk, jog or run 35km from Coolum to Mooloolaba Beach in the fifth annual ‘Bloody Long Walk Sunshine Coast’ event!

Starting at Tickle Park, walkers will enjoy stunning ocean views as they follow the scenic Sunshine Coast beaches. They’ll then walk walking alongside the beautiful Maroochy River through to the picturesque Alex Forest conservation area before finishing on beautiful Mooloolaba Beach.

By joining the event, Bloody Long Walkers will help raise awareness of mitochondrial disease (mito), a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death. One Australian child born each week suffers a

‘Ted’ to be finally returned?

ROB was contacted several months ago to help identify the recovered remains of missing ADF member, Sgt Edward ‘Ted’ Booth Watson (NX47331) – a cousin of his mother Kathleen Jeffs (nee Templeton), another long-time local along with husband Archie Jeffs.

So... who was Sergeant Edward Booth Watson and what was his story?

Edward Watson, known by friends as ‘Ted’, was born in Taree in 1917.

Along with three siblings, he grew up on Jones Island, at the mouth of the Manning River on the NSW midcoast.

On June 26, 1940, aged 21, Ted’s younger brother Wentworth enlisted with the AIF serving with the 2/3 Independent company (later to become part of the 2/7 Australian Cavalry Commando Regiment that camped at Yandina Showgrounds.)

Ted soon followed, enlisting two months later on August 28, 1940, with the 2/1st Infantry Battalion.

He was deployed to the Middle East serving for 16 months, fighting in the North African Campaign.

He took part in battles around Bardia and Tobruk, then later in Greece, Crete. and three months in Ceylon.

In August 1942, the 2/1st was sent home for some welldeserved R&R following Japan’s entry into the war.

But after a brief respite, the 2/1st was deployed to New Guinea, arriving in September 1942 just as the tide of the Kokoda Track Campaign was starting to turn in favour of the Allies.

The track or trail, is a single-file foot track running roughly southwest from Kokoda for 96kms through dense jungle, steep inclines, and deep valleys through the Owen Stanley Range towards Port Moresby.

Between July and November 1942, a series of battles between Japanese and Australian forces were fought which became known as the Kokoda Track Campaign.

Not only were the Australian soldiers in ferocious battles against a formidable and fierce opponent – the Japanese Imperial Army - they had to constantly fight tropical diseases: malaria, dengue fever, scrub typhus, tropical ulcers, dysentery and fungal infections. They also endured debilitating climate and torrential rainfalls that turned the ground into a quagmire.

In March 1942, the Japanese had adopted a strategy to isolate Australia from the United States - intending to prevent Allied military operations by capturing Port Moresby in New Guinea.

Japanese forces had landed and established beachheads near Gona and Buna in North-east New Guinea.

They quickly advanced, capturing Kokoda and its vital airfield, then were in sight of Port Moresby, but withdrew on September 26 with the Australians in pursuit.

Ted’s battalion joined the Allied pursuit of the withdrawing Japanese north, suffering heavy

casualties. More than 60% were killed, wounded or evacuated sick.

During this counter-offensive, the 2/1st were involved in major battles at Eora Creek, Gorari and Sanananda between October and late November 1942.

It was on Friday, November 20, that volunteers were called to silence a 75mm gun halting the Allied advance along the Soputa track.

The gun had been dragged through the jungle into the mountains and had the Australian troops pinned down. Ted was one of the 90 soldiers to raise their hand. The fight lasted about 36 hours and has been described as “Hell let loose”.

Of the 90 volunteers, only 20 soldiers and four officers survived. It was one of the fiercest battles of the Papuan Campaign.

Ted was not one of them. He was buried by his mates somewhere near the Soputa Track.

After 80 years, there is now hope that he has been found and now may be peacefully laid to rest and his ultimate sacrifice honoured the way it deserves.

May you rest in peace, Ted. Lest we forget.

*There are more than 2000 Australian servicemen unaccounted for in Papua New Guinea from WW2. The ADF works tirelessly to locate these soldiers and commemorate them. Hopefully now there is one less.

The Following was Printed in the Manning River Times & Advocate for the Northern Districts of NSW on Saturday January 23, 1943

A Former Platoon Commander and Personal friend of Sgt Ted Watson wrote a letter to his parents, Mr and Mrs Watson who later called on him in Sydney and obtained many personal details concerning their son.

Dear Mr and Mrs Watson,

No doubt you have heard of the death of your son by now. It is with the greatest of sympathy that I write these few lines to you regarding the matter. I was Teddy’s platoon ‘commander for over a month. He was a corporal. I took over the platoon and I can honestly say that he was the finest section leader I’ve had since I’ve been in the army. Realising his splendid qualities, I promoted him to platoon sergeant at the very 1st opportunity. There being no vacancies in my platoon for the rank, he was transferred to another platoon. Shortly afterwards he met his death.

Prior to this I spoke to the colonel regarding his leadership and he had him in mind for a commission. Undoubtedly he would have been commissioned about a month later.

He behaved splendidly in the battle where he was killed and accounted for at least 20 Japanese with his Tommy Gun and grenades before he was wounded by a bullet. Even then he continued fighting until there was a lull and making his way back for medical treatment he was shot again and died like a real man.

This was the fiercest battle of the Papuan campaign. Out of 90 Australians who attacked, only 20 men and 4 officers came out alive, I was one of the fortunate ones. I’d advise you to buy a copy of the S.M.Herald or Telegraph 28 November and read the account of the battle.

Teddie was loved by all ranks and he set a splendid example in everything he did. Can I add anymore?

Sincerely and with sympathy

WILD ABOUT NOOSA HINTERLAND

with Tony Wellington

IF you’re a believer in reincarnation, try not to come back as an Antechinus. Sure, they

may look cute, but the males only live for one year and the females are lucky if they survive two years.

The most common Antechinus in our area is the Yellow-footed Antechinus. It’s a mouse-sized marsupial, not a rodent. Antechinus can be distinguished from ordinary house mice by their slightly longer, pointier nose, and a touch of rufous colour on legs and underparts. They also have a fold in their ears - a sort of double lobed outer ear which is not present on rodents. What’s more, they don’t have the characteristic musk smell of rodents.

When they choose to cohabit with we large hominids, Antechinus do have a tendency to build nests inside sofas and wall cavities. But the upside is that they’re very entertaining, plus they are fierce predators of cockroaches. Although Antechinus are generally nocturnal, the Yellow-footed variety are the most likely to be seen during daylight hours.

These little animals live in the fast lane, which accounts for their short life span. During the breeding cycle, the males rush about fighting and mating, which eventually causes them to drop dead from stress and exhaustion.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

The female’s pouch is an open slit on the belly. Females give birth to undeveloped young that latch onto teats in the pouch where they remain for around 50 days. After leaving the pouch, they cling to their mother’s back as she scampers about: just another facet of their entertainment value.

A truly fruit-full

THIS is a story about a farmer and a cook. And fruit. Lots of it.

It’s also about a woman who travelled a long way, through a lot of places, to find her passion and love, and a man who can fix just about anything, and who was awaiting her arrival.

Then in time they discovered there was no annual food festival in their own area at Woolooga, north-west of Gympie – so they started one themselves.

Cecilia Diaz spent her early years in the Philippines, undertaking school studies, then moving on to study a degree.

But then in the late eighties, when Cecilia was just 19, her parents decided to migrate – parents and two siblings – to Australia.

“I was already in my first year of uni, doing commerce,” Cecilia said.

“We moved in November 1987 and first arrived in Sydney, but then we went to a country town, East Maitland.

“To study for a degree, I would have to re-qualify through a TAFE business diploma, as the grading was a bit different.”

She was told she would have to re-sit Year 11 and 12 equivalents, “but I didn’t want to go back to school, and the only way was to do TAFE and business admin as a ticket as a mature age student to do a degree”.

Meanwhile, Cecilia worked casually as she began to assimilate into her new country.

“I was baby-sitting, house-cleaning for

partnership

friends and rellies; I worked at Kmart –then at the end of 1989 I got a job to work for National Australia Bank in Sydney.

“In 1990 the family relocated to Sydney, and I stayed in banking for the next 10 years – also doing my Bachelor of Commerce degree for five years part-time.”

But banking did not inspire Cecilia’s passion, so “I quit and worked awhile in direct marketing, then in real estate for five years, before moving to Queensland with my parents”.

“They had decided to retire –in Maryborough. I had no connections there; it was a bit of a culture shock after Sydney, more of a slower pace. But we had been travelling to Queensland for many years – Hervey Bay in particular.

“Also, Maryborough has such beautiful heritage buildings.”

It was a time for Cecilia to “find a new crowd, find my way – it gave me time to get to know the place”.

Her parents’ garden was a work of sustainability, in which she became involved – and discovered a love of cooking – but that was as far as it went at the time.

“I got back into real estate for two years –but I was always cooking,” she said. But things were not the same; something “didn’t fit”.

“So I started growing and cooking, feeding my passion for cooking.

“It was trial by experience – growing tomatoes, more produce than I could handle, then giving lots to friends – but there was only so much they could take.

“I Googled tomato relish, and an aunt gave me a recipe for pickle – again there’s only so much pickle friends can handle.

“But they started to say ‘you’re good enough – why not start to sell them yourself?’

“And my boss in real estate said, when I once brought in some spring rolls, said ‘you should be a cook – what are you in real estate for?’

So Cecilia set out on a new path, taking the business name CC’s Kitchen, as so many people knew her as “CC”.

“I wasn’t sure where it would lead – and my father said it was ‘going against the grain’.

“He said ‘you want to be a cook when you’ve got a degree and a good name in real estate?’ And so I just did a small business management course and tried to get to know things.”

A trusted person said to her ‘when you start a business, stick it out for three years –if it’s not working by then, it’s not for you’.

“And 12 years later, here I am.”

Cecilia started out making what she was already doing, along with jams.

“Customers at markets were saying that gooseberry jam is ‘the best jam ever’!

“I was talking to market people, trying to learn about ingredients like gooseberry – I didn’t even know what a gooseberry was.

“Then one of my friends one day said to me ‘by the way, the Petersens over there have gooseberries, and said I could go over and see them and I could learn about them’.

“Greg was behind the stall at the end of the day and had some gooseberries left and he said ‘someone told me you were after gooseberries’.”

That was a fateful meeting.

“He became my [gooseberry] supplier –and before I knew it, he was wanting to sell me rosellas.

“I thought ‘why would you want to cook a bird’?

“Not realising it was actually a fruit, I said he’d better get me some.

“When he delivered it I didn’t know what to do with it, but he taught me how to prepare and cook it, a la ‘Nana Petersen’.

“A year later we got married and moved to his Woolooga farm – and here we are: the story of the farmer and the cook.”

Greg was a fourth generation farmer and always wanted to be one since he was four.

Born in Redcliffe, “he pretty much grew up around Narangba, Kallangur, before buying the Woolooga farm in 1999”, Cecilia said.

Page 10 | Your Local Lifestyle May 2023
Before I knew it, Greg was wanting to sell me rosellas. I thought ‘why would you want to cook a bird?’

“He’s a jack-of-all-trades; he knows how to fix trucks, how to invent things, [and] he’s a great recycler.

“He knows so much about the land; if he’d stayed at school he wouldn’t know half the things he knows now.

“I can’t even know my directions – he helps me with that – he knows how the rains go, the clouds, all these things.

“I’m in awe at all the things he knows.”

The pair have been together for 10 years now, living on the Petersen Farm.

“It’s a rosella farm. The land is about 50 acres; we cultivate about 30 acres and leave 10 to 15 as a balance for nature, for all the wildlife,” Cecilia said.

“We grow rosellas which only take up about four acres of our land. We’ve got other crops: Asian vegetables, okra, Mexican stuff like jalapenos.”

The list of items the pair are growing is lengthy, and tailor-made to suit the clientele they have.

“We’re getting ready for winter crops like beans, snow peas, tomatoes, chillis, sunflowers sometimes to keep the balance.

“And we leave a lot of land resting, growing in rotation – so the farm is productive all year round, but we go a bit low during December to February as it gets too hot.”

Is it a farm-gate-style business? Does it supply locals? Does it appear at markets? Does it supply shops and stores?

The answer is yes to all. But Cecilia and Greg are smarter still – they have identified different cultural groups with particular requirements.

And they don’t just grow and hope to sell – they estimate the overall demand first, then grow and produce enough to meet it.

“We have a shop at the farm (understandably dubbed The Big Rosella)that’s where you’ll see a big rosella structure mounted on its roof. It’s a shop for fresh and local veggies, CC’s Kitchen prepared items,” Cecilia said.

“It works on an honesty basis; the traffic we get is local as well as drive-throughs with caravans, and cars that have been doing these trails for 20 years.

“It has become a bit of a stop-by for a lot of people. We’re open seven days a week including Christmas and public holidays –a little shop providing essential produce.

“We go to Maryborough and Urangan markets in Hervey Bay as well as a lot of fruit festivals in Southeast Queensland, supplying shops directly, local communities, crops for South Africans, Indians, Asian communities.

“We grow for demand – we don’t just grow it.”

She said it wasn’t smart to rely on pricedriven markets in Brisbane markets, “so we like the direct contact with customers we get a more reasonable price and it’s win-win as they get nice fresh produce with no waste, and they get a fair price as it’s not going through a middle-man”.

The couple are supplying direct to food manufacturers, jam makers, supplying rosellas to South Australia, Victoria and other locations.

“We are the biggest supplier of rosellas in Queensland,” Cecilia said.

This year, they are organising and celebrating their eighth year of the Big Rosella Field Day on May 6 and 7, their annual event that celebrates the harvest of rosella fruit and promotes the love of farming.

It features tours of the farm, educational workshops, cooking demonstrations and tastings, plus entertainment among many other activities.

“When we go to farmers’ markets, people say ‘what’s a rosella?’ We assume people know, but younger people don’t.

“A year before we started this, the Brisbane Market price fell below $2 a kilogram; we said we won’t sell them in the market – we’ll put them away.

“We had 1.2 tonnes of rosellas. Then I saw in a magazine a festival about Brussels sprouts had 5000 people show up. There’s nothing exciting about Brussels sprouts, but they had 5000 show up!”

The Rosella Festival name came up in a kitchen table conversation.

“[Then] we called out to the likes of Matt Golinski, maybe for a cooking demonstration, who said he’d love to, so we hired a big marquee and got family and friends to help out. In our first year in 2016 we had 300 people show up; it was so exciting.”

“Now we’re into our eighth year, so pretty much our intention is to educate people, get people back on the land, learn small crops, have a day out to remember what it was like when they were young, see all the

products – and we invite other farmers to come along and talk about their farms and produce.

“It’s crazy but fun - that’s why they call me CC: ‘Crazy Cook’.

“I want to leave some legacy on this earth, to teach how to cook, how to farm, in a small way leave an impact for our small community.

“We have no kids, so that’s what drives our passion. Our only kids are our two fur babies, our farm dogs. They are almost like kids.”

Tewantin’s global menu

PULL up at the Noosa River Kitchen on Tewantin’s Memorial Avenue and you will see a small, cosy café restaurant fronting a fully equipped commercial kitchen.

Open the door and - from a culinary perspective - experience the whole world.

Because the lunch, breakfast and special occasion menus that Chris and Kathrin - who started Noosa River Kitchen in September 2021 - are an atlas of genuine cuisine from nearly every continent on the planet.

And the key word is ‘authentic’.

That means, if you are harking back to your holiday in Asia, Europe or the Americas, and a taste for the foods you grew to love while travelling, you can find them right in the heart of little ol’ Tewantin.

Perhaps not surprising, given chef Chris has not only prepared meals for the likes of the President of Germany, the House of Faberge, and members of the British Royal Family – he has crafted his trade in some of the world’s best eating establishments.

Chris grew up in the Black Forest region of Germany and has spent his entire career in hospitality.

“I was born in a stock pot,” he quips.

Needless to say, a Black Forest gateau made by him can only be truly authentic, but his specialities include Bavarian, traditional Italian, classic and nouvelle

French, and Mediterranean cuisine. Traditional authentic cuisine, not ‘fusion’ - original ingredients all the way.

It was a bottle of Rosemount Shiraz that kicked off Chris’s journey to Australia (ask him about it when you visit), arriving in time to be part of the Sydney Olympics showcase in 2000. He and Kathrin celebrated 23 years “of friendship and love” this year and have established a growing patronage from locals.

As Kathrin says, “a lot of our customers have travelled the world and know how things taste. Customers say ‘this reminds me of what I received in Europe’”.

They also enjoy the alwayschanging lunch and special occasion menus, along with the regulars who come in for a more unique breakfast experience.

You can travel all the way to Gympie Terrace or Hastings Street for a quality international meal.

8-3pm Sunday to Friday, and evening special occasions or functions, and provides specialised corporate and home catering services. Visit

MAY IS FOR MOTHERS

WHAT a wonderful time of year! May is one of my favourite months! We have beautiful, comfortable temperatures, glorious, warm sunny days and if we are lucky, some lovely autumn showers.

And this is a magical time in the garden too! Autumn is the best time of the year to plant, with the ground still warm, your new plants will settle in quickly and be well on their way to being established for an explosion of new growth and flower blooms in spring.

Autumn is also an ideal time to fertilise and mulch the gardens. The plants are still growing, so they will love the extra boost, and the mulch will not only keep the soil warm, it will also lock in the moisture and the best bit... keep those pesky weeds at bay!

May is also for Mothers. And what do Mothers want more than anything? More than flowers and chocolates? Time with their kids. Even better, their kids to help them in the garden! While flowers and chocolates are a popular choice, why not consider giving your Mum something that will last longer and bring joy for years to come? The perfect gift for Mother’s Day is plants, (natives of course).

Plants are a great gift idea because they are long lasting, not like the bunch

A new vibe in Pomona

A VIBE CAN BE HARD TO DESCRIBE. IT’S THE KIND OF THING THAT IS THERE, OR IT ISN’T. DENNIS DENUTO MAKES

A SENSATIONAL CASE FOR ‘THE VIBE’ OF THE AUSTRALIAN CONSTITUTION IN THE CASE OF THE CASTLE, THE 1997 AUSTRALIAN MOVE CLASSIC, WHEN HE STATES SIMPLY, “IT’S THE VIBE”.

WE are in Pomona on the kind of Autumn day where everything is sparkling and you adjust your eyes for a reality check. The fresh air is cracking, the birds are broadcasting their joy and the locals are smiling, nodding to each other boasting wordlessly, yup we live in paradise.

My husband’s barber has moved from bustling Noosaville to a new precinct in Pomona, closer to our home and more to our vibe. When we arrive at Hashima Surfhouse, the new barbershop and showroom of Jimmy Smith, we wait in the super comfy lounge corner. We tune in to the chill music vibes, hubby drifts into a power nap and I flip through the soul inspiring coffee table books, instantly awash in a sense of calm.

Vibe Stores Pomona was completed last year in November and is now full of tenants. It is the vision of Adam Schmidt, owner of Grow Landscapes who along with his wife Sharon first came to Kin Kin in 2008. They previously ran Grow from Brisbane and together have operated the current landscape business in Pomona since 2017. The buildings that now comprise the Vibe Stores were run down and flood prone, but Adam saw the

immense value in retaining them.

“I loved that these buildings backed onto the park. None of the buildings on Factory Street take advantage of the park, which is one of Pomona’s greatest assets. So I couldn’t wait to rescue the buildings by raising them out of the flood plain and opening the back shed out onto the park,” Adam says.

Drawing on previous experience from rescuing character buildings, Adam designed the project to both maximise and improve the front character building and create a community within the retail precinct.

“I loved the original front building and its history as the old Railway Hotel.

When we bought the building staff brought in articles and books about the original hotel. The buildings are on the Pomona Heritage Walk, so there is a nice story and appreciation that I have for the building’s history. I also saw the potential in saving

and lifting the old back shed out of the flood plain. This is where Jimmy is located and I have created a very modern space that looks out onto the greenery. The old shed was completely closed off to the park, so I couldn’t wait to put in large sliding windows to the gorgeous parklands”. The offer to open his own barber shop came at the right time for Jimmy, who was just contemplating what he wanted from life, as he hit his thirties.

“Originally I was thinking about going travelling but Adam hit me up to come and look at the space. I just walked in and saw the high ceilings and the big window at the back. I think I was waiting for the right space and I thought, you wouldn’t get an opportunity like this near the coast to start a business. This is beautiful.”

For the last decade, Jimmy has been the popular, locals favourite barber at the internationally renowned hipster

barbershop Sip Sops, associated with the uber cool Thomas Surfboards empire. Jimmy arrived in Noosa as part of the new wave of hipsters that gravitated here for warmth and waves and swelled Noosa’s population a decade or so ago.

“I came to Noosa on some road trips. Me and my mates would road trip up from Victoria. We came here and the waves were magic. It was warm all the time, we surfed in board shorts. I was sort of getting a little bit stale cutting hair.”

At the time young Jimmy was completing a hair dressing apprenticeship but when one of his mates showed him the barber products from Upper Cuts, he started trying to replicate barber hair cuts and found his talent. He was following the Noosa surfers on social media when he saw a post on Instagram ‘Barber Wanted’. It was a huge decision as a 20 year old to leave home and all his mates but he made the move north and started working at Sip Sops in the original surf shop.

“I was a 20 year old kid from Victoria who loved long boarding and alternative surfing who just got thrown in the middle of it. It was interesting because I got to learn how to deal with all sorts of people but I had to treat

Page 18 | Your Local Lifestyle May 2023
I think I was waiting for the right space and I thought, you wouldn’t get an opportunity like this near the coast to start a business. This is beautiful

everyone the same. We had a lot of famous people through that shop over the years. There were some wild times.”

And now in another brave move, he has brought barbering within a surf shop to a small hinterland town.

“I had been thinking about doing it for years, my own thing, but I was just so happy in my twenties, having a great time at Sip Sops, watching it grow and growing with it. I was just a young kid, surfing and I was

locals. Young families have moved out here. People who are doing big things are living out here. It’s pretty cool. I’ve met a few families that have moved from the cities and they are here for the kids to have some more room.”

And there are actually plenty of surfers.

“When people buy (surf) wax it’s like yes, it’s happening. It’s here! There are surfers in the hinterland!” Jimmy laughs.

ROSELLAS

ONE of my earliest childhood cooking memories is sitting around the kitchen table peeling the calyxes from the pods of rosellas and cooking them up to make jam. Every time I smell the aroma of rosellas cooking now it takes me straight back to that table.

Rosellas are the fruit of a variety of hibiscus native to western Africa and India but are now grown all over the world for their fruit, leaves (which taste like sorrel) and fibre for textiles.

Jars of their crimson jam have always been an essential item on any good cake stall in Queensland, the plants suitability to our climate and the high natural pectin levels in their pods makes them the perfect choice for conserves.

Fresh fruit is available from mid-summer through to late autumn and can be made into jam, chutneys, cordial, tea, and sweet or savoury sauces. The leaves can be stir-fried and eaten as greens.

Cecilia Diaz-Petersen, the ‘queen of rosellas’ and her husband Greg from Petersens Farm in Wooloolga are one of the biggest growers in Australia, and on the first weekend in May each year they open up their farm to the public to celebrate this beautiful fruit. I’ll be there on Saturday May 6, cooking up some of my favourite rosella recipes. I hope to see you there!

ROSELLA AND NATIVE MINT MERINGUE ROULADE

INGREDIENTS:

150gm rosella jam (see note)

4 pastured free range egg whites

150gm castor sugar

1 tsp cornflour

1 tsp white vinegar

300ml cream, whipped

¼ cup native mint (see note)

icing sugar for dusting

Serves 8 – 10

METHOD:

Preheat oven to 160°C.

Line a 25 x 40cm baking tray with baking paper.

Beat the egg whites using the whisk attachment of an electric mixer until they form soft peaks.

Slowly add the sugar and beat for 5 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved.

Gently fold in the vinegar and cornflour and spread the meringue in an even layer on the lined tray.

Bake for 20 minutes at 160°C.

Lay out a clean tea towel and cover with a piece of baking paper.

Sprinkle evenly with icing sugar and turn the meringue out onto the baking paper.

Peel away the lining paper and replace with a new piece of baking paper, then roll up tightly in the tea towel, starting from the short side. Allow to completely cool then unroll and remove top sheet of baking paper.

Spread evenly with the whipped cream and generously spoon on the rosella jam.

Sprinkle with half of the mint leaves and roll tightly into a log, using the bottom sheet of baking paper as an aid (like using a sushi mat).

Gently transfer to a serving platter and dust generously with icing sugar. Serve each slice sprinkled with the remaining mint.

NOTE:

Rosella jam is readily available pre-made, but if you’d like to make your own:

Remove the outer calyx’s (the red bit) from the rosellas, reserving the inner green pods.

Place the pods in a small saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and discard the pods, keeping the liquid (it contains the pectin to help your jam set).

Place the rosella calyx’s into a medium saucepan and add the pod liquid (it doesn’t need to cover the fruit, it will cook down very quickly).

Simmer over a low heat until the fruit breaks down in the liquid, then measure the amount of pulp you have, and add the same amount of sugar by volume.

Simmer over a low heat until the jam becomes very thick, stirring occasionally.

(When I think mine is ready, I like to put a little bit on a saucer and put it in the fridge to check that it sets firmly enough.)

Pour the jam carefully into heatproof sterilised jars. I buy my native mint (Mentha Australis) from the Landcare nursery in Pomona or Fairhill Native Plants in Ninderry. It’s a beautiful perennial ground cover plant with little white flowers and a strong spearmint flavour.

HOW TO KILL A CLIENT – JOANNA JENKINS

PERCHED high above the winding Brisbane River, there is a current of unease running through the offices of Howard Greene. The partners and staff of the prestigious law firm are all aware of the corporate restructure underway, but “restructure was a euphemism for mass sackings. Always on the cards when profits were down”.

Ruth Dawson is spending 6 months working in the Brisbane office at the request of one of her clients, which is great news for Viv, the only female partner in Brisbane. “Ruth was a bit scary, a renowned curmudgeon, but she’d be an ally in this sea of blokes.”

When Gavin Jones, the in-house lawyer of Howard Greene’s biggest client, Minerallic, dies from an apparent heart attack at the age of 39, shock waves are felt through-out the firm. Minerallic is worth millions in fees and Gavin liked to wield his power with manipulative contempt. Misogynistic, arrogant and cruel, both in the office and at home, Gavin is widely disliked, and when the police begin to suspect foul play, fingers point toward Viv, who had been publicly humiliated by Gavin at the Howard Greene partners conference, and who had been harbouring a revenge fantasy.

It doesn’t take long for Ruth to see that Viv is being set up for a fall, and Ruth begins to do a bit of investigating of her own. But it seems any number of people had motivation and desire to get rid of Gavin, so, who actually killed him?

“How to Kill a Client” written by Joanna Jenkins, herself a partner in an international law firm, is a fun thriller, which takes us on a ride through corporate greed and capitalism, and the lavish but unstable lifestyles of lawyers at the top of their games.

HOW LOCAL LIBRARY HELPED WRITER ACHIEVE HER DREAM

RADIO announcer and now author Sheridan Stewart is celebrating the release of her brand-new book I Am Enough and is quick to acknowledge how her local library played a part in her writing journey.

Sheridan regularly visited Coolum Library as a writing haven, with its calm and inviting space.

Her debut book, which began as a 90-Day challenge simply to spend less, contemplates what it means to have enough, do enough and ultimately be enough.

Sheridan said the book came from a single page journal entry which she looked at and thought “that’s a book”.

“I found writing at home could be quite distracting and because I had the idea of non-essential spending, I remembered my library,” Sheridan said.

“We spend money so habitually that we walk straight pass the things that are completely free.

“The library offers free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, printing that’s incredibly affordable and people who can help you with technology when you need it.

Crows Nest, is a Qld small-town crime novel inspired by an unsolved crime in the 1990s and written through the author’s extensive career in child protection. Told from the perspective of Dana Gibson, an outof-town social worker pulled into the chilling murder investigation of two local women found dead in regional Queensland in 1991. Crows Nest not only brings aspects of this particular case to light but explores the silencing of women that still occurs far too often within Australia. Nikki grew up and resides in Toowoomba and brings to her work an understanding of rural communities, their customs and their secrets. Books available to purchase on the day. Free event, bookings required.

Master songwriter Don Walker performs in Eumundi

LEGENDARY Australian singersongwriter Don Walker will be taking to the stage with his band at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday May 19, the first performance in the ‘Lighting in a Clear Blue Sky’ Australian East Coast Tour. They will be supported by Melody Moko for what will be a seated show.

Don Walker is renowned as one of Australia’s best songwriters. With Cold Chisel, he wrote Saturday Night, Cheap Wine, Standing on the Outside, Four Walls and Khe Sahn along with many others, and co-wrote Flame Trees. He then recorded and toured, initially under the name Catfish; and with Tex, Don and Charlie (with Tex Perkins and Charlie

Owen) writing songs like Sitting At A Bar and Harry Was A Bad Bugger; and penned songs for many, including Slim Dusty’s Looking Forward, Looking Back.

‘Lighting in a Clear Blue Sky’ (to be released on May 5) is Don Walker’s fourth solo album and his first studio album in 10 years.

A solo effort as deep as the ocean and as dark as the night, with big bright flashes of musical lightning, it’s both wondrous and tragic. It’s melancholic. It’s reflective. It’s dirty and bluesy and blue.

Recorded in Victoria over two days, it features long-time bandmates and creative collaborators Garrett Costigan on pedal steel; Michael Vidale on bass; Hamish Stuart on drums and the late,

Internationally acclaimed author, Trent Dalton, says it best, “’I’ve got the song we’ll need to live,’ he sings on the very first line of the very first song. Turns out he’s got a whole album of them. Every one of them nourishing and sustaining, restorative and resurrective. And now, for the first time in years the incomparable Don Walker is about to speak,” says Dalton. Imperial Hotel, Eumundi. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets $60 (+BF) through Oztix.

Three for the price of one

NOOSA Arts Theatre’s latest offering is the very popular One Act Play Festival which is something that the local community has embraced for decades. Fielding plays from around the world, a rigorous process involving a professional reading panel whittles the entries down to the final three. Then the real fun begins! Directors and casts audition to bring these one act plays (no more than 45 min in length) to life on the Noosa Arts Theatre stage.

The three plays chosen this year are an eclectic mix. There’s the black comedy Love Over A Barrel written by Rob Selzer who won last year’s competition with his play Three Wives and a Funeral. Alison Venning is a first time director with Noosa Arts Theatre. Her last appearance was on stage as Tanya in Mamma Mia. This fun play tells the story of Billy, an ex-priest, who now works as a contract killer who has a strict moral code of never telling a lie which places him in a conundrum. Do love and bullets mix?

There is also The Magpies

written by Paula-Mary Camilleri and directed by Jacqui Mata. The story is about Helen, who lives by herself, in a small wooden house. There are three magpies that visit her daily so she feeds them. Since her daughter Rebecca moved out, Helen has decided to re-join the dating scene. We bear witness to Helen with her first dating experience along with a few injured birds, late night Doritos and mint slice biscuits thrown in. What could possibly go wrong?

Our third offering is Astro Cafe written by Paul Clarke and directed by another first time director to Noosa Arts Theatre, Catherine Gamble. It’s late night at the Astro cafe, and one of the townsfolk tells of a strange encounter he’s just experienced out on the road. Could there be more to the event than it first seems? The past is about to collide with the present, changing everyone’s lives forever. Can we hear that classical music piece of ‘Close Encounters’ perhaps?

The shows starts May 18 and runs to May 28. Tickets available through the website www.noosaartstheatre.org.au.

The company are proud of creating ‘Shakespeare at the Lake’ and their players revel in the beautiful surrounds.

New exhibition format

Each year we look to bring music, laughter and poetry to the Botanical Gardens and to bring to the stage the words of Shakespeare, master wordsmith and obsever of human nature. It is a joy for us to create these shows and we love seeing our audiences arrive with wine, cushions, blankets and a picnic ready to settle in and while away a beautiful afternoon.”

IN May the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) is experimenting with a new exhibition format.

Staff have noticed how visitors love to talk to an artist about their work and not simply come to a large open empty space with pictures on the wall. When CBFAC runs its annual Eclectica end of year exhibition of members artwork, artists set up an easel or table in front of their work and spend the day working and talking to visitors.

In May CBFAC has invited artists, both members and non-members to take up residence in the gallery spaces with their work for periods of a week and for those artists who work during the week, over weekends. It means a visit to the gallery will mean not only seeing an exhibition but also up to 12 artists working away. The project dubbed Art Jam will run over 5 weeks from May 5 to June 11. There are still some spaces available for this exciting new project.

Whilst the CBFAC continues to be creative in its programming it also provides a regular exhibition program. Hiring space for an exhibition either by an individual artist or a group of artists is popular and is well supported by the Butter Factory staff. 2023 is well and truly booked out but the CBFAC is now taking applications to exhibit in 2024. The gallery provides three major spaces downstairs and a space

upstairs aimed at artists who are starting out or have not had a major solo exhibition. Go to the CBFAC website to apply.

And of course if you want something a little different than an exhibition why not come along to the CBFAC mother’s day market to grab something unique made by an artist for your mum. The market takes place on Saturday May 13 from 10am-2pm. www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au

DON’T miss out on tickets to the exclusive screening of The Giants, an eco-documentary, a poetic cinematic portrayal of Bob Brown, forests, and our deep connection with trees. The Giants interweaves Bob’s story with the life cycle of the ancient trees he’s fighting for. Bob shares his 50 years of inspiring activism, from saving Tasmania’s last wild river to the current battle for the Tarkine rainforest, also known as Takayna.

The film features a star-studded cast of windswept eucalypts, Huon pines, and myrtles, brought to life by cameras rigged high in the tree canopy, immersive point cloud animation generated from 3D tree scans. The Giants is a stunning, visual feast that reveals the hidden life of the forest.

The event is hosted by Sinerji founder and designer Louise Visser, fresh from her ‘Art for Takayna’ field trip in Tasmania, where artists gathered to collaborate and take inspiration from the Gondwana rainforests of Takayna.

Louise will discuss the current situation in Takayna and what we can do to protect old-growth forests across Australia.

And in the words of Bob Brown himself, “If thoughtful people who otherwise feel hopeless about the plight of nature come away thinking, ‘I’m going to take action’ or ‘I’m going to start funding action or change my vote’, then it will have been worthwhile.”

All proceeds from the screening will go

directly to the Bob Brown Foundation, raising funds for projects that make a difference. The screening is proudly sponsored by Sinerji Clothing, Kunara Organic Market Place, Waterscapes Australia, The Falls Farm, and The Mapleton Public House. Tickets are available from Humantix (search THE GIANTS).

Screening Saturday May 6 at 6.30pm at the Majestic Cinema Nambour.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE!

WE are bombarded with a broad array of weight loss options on a daily basis. There are literally thousands of strategies to becoming healthier. From Paleo, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Calorie deficit, Carnivore, Hello Fresh and the list goes on and on and on.

Confused much? Well, you aren’t the only one. The best advice I can give you is, keep it simple. Yep! That’s it! Keep it simple. Go back to the basics!!

An easy place to start is to write down what you are eating and drinking through the day. Tracking your food makes you so much more aware of what you are actually feeding yourself, rather than what you WANT to believe you are feeding yourself. Often this is all it takes for someone to realise how much and what types of food they habitually consume.

Are you eating enough vegetables? Are you getting enough protein? Are you drinking enough water? Are you having too much alcohol? It all becomes very transparent when you track.

I know what your thinking! What app do I use to track. Well, you are going to love this. Keep it simple and track the oldfashioned way using pen and paper. It is

WHY WE LOVE LIQUID HERBS

They are our powerful liquid herbal extracts which our registered Naturopaths and Herbalists can use to help assist you on your healing journey. Extracts are produced from wholefood herb plants which offer a higher concentrated strength of herb than found in tablets or powders.

HOW ARE THEY DISPENSED?

Naturopaths and Herbalists can prescribe and dispense liquid herbal remedies after a consultation with their client. This consult will include checks of contraindications, allergies, current medications, and supplements to ensure the herb is safe for the individual client and there are no adverse interactions. The formula is dispensed into a bottle and instructions are given on dosage, per individual client’s needs.

WHY DO OUR PRACTITIONERS LOVE THEM?

• Customised formulation blends can be created for each individual client’s health needs. The practitioner can customise the blend, strength, and dose for each client.

• Because of their strength liquid formulations can also target health conditions more effectively.

• Better value for the client as the dose is in concentrated form.

• Diverse use and can be used for oral remedy, nasal rinses, throat sprays and topical applications.

WHAT ABOUT THE TASTE?

As the liquids are extracted from herbs, they have a strong herbal taste. Some herbs are more potent in taste than others. Each oral dose is to be diluted into water or juice before drinking. This dilutes the taste of the herbs and makes them more palatable.

Did you know that Flannerys Tewantin offers a herbal liquid dispensary? Come in and talk to one of our naturopathic practitioners to find out if our herbal liquid formulations could benefit your health. Have a question for our Naturopaths? FITNESS FOR YOUR BODY & MIND with Erin Yarwood

IT may be taking it’s sweet old time to arrive, but the cooler weather is almost here!!

And what better way is there to stay warm than exercise!?

One thing I tend to notice each time the seasons change and get fresher though is people seem to lose their mojo.

Some find it harder to get up early in the morning to hit the gym before work. Or can’t seem to get inspired to head to their favourite fitness class on their way home.

And just struggle to stay motivated in general, preferring to snuggle up in bed or in front of the TV & fire instead of sticking to their usual consistent warmer-weather routine.

And although I can kind of see where they’re coming from… (who doesn’t love wearing their uggy’s and favourite pair of trackie-dacks feeling all cosy and snug?…)

I’m here to try and convince you to keep on moving and grooving through the cooler months.

Make a commitment to yourself, right now. You will thank me for it – promise.

REASONS TO KEEP MOVING

Winter is the best time to stay active. And there are so many benefits for sticking to your gym routine or fitness schedule

even when it’s cold and dark and that hot chocolate is calling your name.

1. We had a pretty warm summer. And a rather humid one at that!!! Now I personally don’t mind working out in the heat… but cooler temps and less humidity is way more appealing when working up a sweat, don’t you think!!?

2. Winter can sometimes get a little depressing… even if you don’t notice it at the time. Fewer daylight hours can dull your mood. Exercise is a natural way to boost your endorphins, helping to keep your mood lifted and feeling good!

3. During winter we tend to cover up our bodies that bit more. Hiding beneath jeans or leggings and a big jumper! But it’s no time at all until it gets warmer again, especially where we live!!! Which means exposing your body that little bit more again!!!

Why waste all your hard work and determination by becoming less active over the cooler months? Keep moving. And you’ll be so proud of yourself when you dust of your denim shorts and singlet again!

WAYS TO KEEP MOVING

If you’re in a good routine now with working out, stick with it!!!

Even a daily dog walking regime is awesome and will help to keep your body in tip top shape over winter. Find ways to keep your current workouts fun… or branch out and try something completely new and exciting!!!

Exercise should be fun. So, make sure you choose something that you enjoy. And you’ll be more inclined to stick to it.

1. Become a member of somewhere.

Whether it’s a gym/fitness studio, sporting club or a walking group.

Becoming a ‘part’ of something is a perfect way to stay accountable and keen. Set yourself goals. And never go too big with your goal setting – make it achievable. Write them down so they’re visible and are always fresh in your mind. Give yourself weekly or even daily challenges throughout the cooler months. Maybe you might try to walk that little bit further each morning or park a little further away from your destination… or you might add some intervals into your park trip with your pooch. You might try to lift some slightly heavier weights, or try to get to an extra exercise class each week? Or maybe branch out and try something completely new and out of your comfort zone. By achieving challenges you set for yourself, no matter how big or small, it’s an accomplishment and gives you that endorphin rush each time. Which in turn makes you keen to keep going.

So, whatever you decide to do during the cooler days and fresher evenings, make sure you do it with purpose, commitment and good intentions.

And simply, keep on moving. Your mind and your body will thank you for it. E x

TAKE A HIKE IN THE HINTERLAND with Andrea Taylor

EWEN Maddock Dam is located between Glenview and Landsborough. Its main purpose is to supply potable water to the Sunshine coast region. Construction began in 1973 and was completed in 1976 and upgraded in 1982. The surface area of the dam is 397 ha (980 acres)

To get there travel along Steve Irwin Way then turn onto Mooloolah Connection road. Follow this for 1.5 km. The entrance to Maddock Park is at SEQ water.

This hike is perfect for the whole family, even our fur babies (on leash). I took Bella with me and she did well walking the 18km. Having the trail so close to the water she was able to cool off a few time along the way. Maddock Park has all the facilities you need; BBQ’s, sheltered picnic tables, toilets, playground, parking and even a little beach for swimming. You can also launch your kayaks for a great day out on the water. Starting at Maddock Park it is 18kms return and is not a loop, there are no facilities at the end where you turn back. So if you like you could start from that side (Gympie St North) that way you will hike to Maddock Park where you can relax and enjoy your morning tea or lunch before heading back.

The hike is very cruisy and relatively flat and well shaded. Please keep in mind this is a shared trail and very well signed for everyone to enjoy.

It truly is beautiful. On my last visit we arrived at sun rise, enjoying a tranquil start to our day. The Dam always looks stunning. Early morning through winter is my favourite with the fog sitting on the blue still water and perfect clear skies. It is a very scenic trail with views to the Glass House Mountains so lots of stopping to take photos. I was lucky enough to go with a friend who has a great knowledge of the Flora and Fauna so there is much to see from snowflake lilly’s, purple native iris, Banksia spinulosa or candle stick banksia - the vibrant orange one we often see, my favourite Melaleuca wetland (paper bark tree’s), even some native raspberries.

With plenty of bird life we were lucky enough to get a close encounter with an Australian golden whistler who wasn’t too shy as he protected his territory. Other birds you will see are kingfishers, willy wag tails, finches, ducks and grey herons.

Ewen Maddock Dam

Along Steve Irwin Way you can get another view of the Dam from the Maddock wetlands. It is only a short walk but well worth fitting into your day.

Also keep in mind the weather - after rain it is very muddy and could even be flood affected.

I highly recommend this hike, it is well worth the drive. And as always remember plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.

Happy Hiking

Abundance of Flora & Fauna

UPGRADED COOROORA TRAIL OPENS!

VISITORS and locals alike will now be able to better enjoy the magnificent natural and cultural environment of the Tuchekoi National Park thanks to a $1.68 million upgrade of the Cooroora Trail.

The 10km track, formally known as Trail 5, which links Pomona to Cooran, was officially opened on Wednesday by Noosa Mayor, Clare Stewart, and Chief Executive Officer of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), Major General (Retd) Jake Ellwood.

This shady trail winds through eucalypt forest and grazing land past the peaks of Mt Cooran and Mt Cooroora. Visitors can stop and have a break on the banks of Wirruna Drive Bushland Reserve Lake, or one of several bench seats along the path. The trail works well as a two-way journey with lunch options at both Cooran and Pomona.

Noosa Mayor, Clare Stewart, said the upgrade is the first project to come out of the Noosa Trails Masterplan and is designed to improve town connectivity, increase the use of the trails for educational and recreational use, drive tourism and enhance their effectiveness as fire breaks throughout the bushland.

Echidna’s spiky life

OUR WILVOS

5441 6200 Hotline has been busy. We are always looking for new members to care for wildlife or answer the hotline. A training day will be held in Yandina in May. Details can be found on the WILVOS website.

“The completion of the Cooroora Trail upgrade, which includes investment works at Pioneer Park, Cooran, Cooroora Mountain Park and Stan Topper Park, Pomona, in addition to renewal of the Cooran horse yards, represents Noosa Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting our hinterland communities and local businesses,” the Mayor said. Following the success of the Cooroora Trail, priority upgrades of Trail 7 (Yurol Trail) will follow later this year.

There have been a number of calls about echidnas, which usually happens early in the year. It must be tough living in a burrow, depending on Mum to come and feed you every 5-10 days and then suddenly the burrow entrance is opened up and you are all on your own.

These exquisite creatures have no teeth to bite and no poisonous spurs so no ‘weapons’. Some cope well. Others struggle in their search for food, water and shady shelter. Prone to heat stress, it is important that these animals find cool places to ‘dig in’ during the day, emerging at night to forage for delicacies such as termites. Sometimes they need to come in for a little specialised care until they are taken back to their area.

Caring for

FIELD

to enjoy making

This week an adult echidna found its way into an area dug out for a pond. About a metre deep one end and fifty centimetres at the other end, the animal didn’t climb out. It was a lovely earthy spot with sprinklers around so it was nice and cool. The lovely man who rang up was concerned it could not get out because of the steepness of the sides. Some ramps were erected and it trundled off to the bush that night.

Our Hotliners often have wonderful tales to tell. They find it rewarding to be able to help people who care so much about our wildlife. Sometimes it takes a few people to sort out the odd strange scenario, but usually a carer or transporter can promptly pick up an animal and arrange the care it needs.

NEWS IN BRIEF

MIDDLE CREEK ROAD UPGRADE

Works on the upgraded stretch of road, which links Federal State School and Andersons Road, was fast-tracked to cater for increased traffic flow due to the Black Mountain landslide diversion.

Noosa Council Mayor, Clare Stewart said “the damage caused to our network from last year’s floods was extreme, but this hinterland community has been especially hard hit with the loss of a major thoroughfare on Black Mountain Road due to the landslide.”

‘PLANNED BURNS’ BEGIN

Sunshine Coast Council’s annual planned burn season is underway with nine sites prioritised across the region. Amongst those are Peregian Springs and Yandina Creek undergoing burns before September.

Sunshine Coast Council Fire Management Officer Guy Morgan said a trained Council team worked hard to plan and prepare for burns and monitored the weather closely, waiting for the right conditions.

“Low intensity patch mosaic burning is used to reduce the impact on native animals,” Mr Morgan said.

A map of all burns scheduled for 2023 will be placed on Council’s Facebook page.

It’s time for a garden stocktake

THE air is getting a little chillier at night and the days are becoming crisper, announcing that Autumn is here on the Sunshine Coast.

This season’s forecast is for below average rainfall and slightly warmer than average temperatures, which means the ground will continue to dry up.

Autumn is a good time to get into the garden and survey your property, plant natives and remove invasive plants, to encourage flora and fauna to flourish.

Sunshine Coast Council Pest Plant Officer Rhea Phelan has some tips to keep your garden in great condition this Autumn.

Top of the list is discovering what the warm, wet summer brought to life on the land where you live?

Have you discovered any new native plants popping up? Did floods wash any new invasive plants into your dam, farm, or bushland? Have native violets disappeared under the vigorous summer growth of the invasive ground covers?

It can often be difficult to know which plants are invasive and which are beneficial natives that provide food and home to wildlife.

Here are two natives that will grow well this Autumn across the region, as well as two high priority invasive plants that might be flowering at your place this time of year to keep a look out for.

INVASIVE WEEDS

Broad-leaved pepper trees (Schinus terebinthifolius)

BENEFICIAL NATIVES

Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus)

Originally introduced as a garden ornamental, broad-leaved pepper trees escaped cultivation and now dominate sand dune ecosystems on the Sunshine Coast replacing banksias and casuarinas. They are recognised this time of year by their flowers which are small and white and followed by hundreds of red berries.

Madeira Vine (Anredera cordifolia)

This tall, hardy native shrub has a dark green foliage, fringed bell-shaped, pinkishwhite flowers and stunning, blue berries. It attracts Figbirds, Regent Bowerbirds, as well as Wonga and White-headed Pigeons. Purple Coral Pea (Hardenbergia violacea)

This weed is a prolific spreader from aerial tubers, plant parts and seeds. Madeira vine has fleshy, bright green leaves and flower spikes that are around 10cm long with tiny flowers covering them. It’s often described as resembling a lamb’s tail. The Madeira vine is currently flowering.

A hardy vine that grows well across the coast, this native has spectacular, purple flowers and is a food plant for the common Grass Blue Butterfly whose larvae feed on the leaves, buds and flowers.

KinKin for coffee on Ebikes

NOOSA’S 100km trail network can be a bit daunting with its many intersections and big elevations but when you break it down into smaller chunks it’s not so bad especially on E-bikes.

On a recent ride we headed out from Stratford park for a three hour ride that would include some coffee and tucker at Kin Kin’s Black Ant. After a bit of bitumen we were soon onto the dirt of Simpsons Rd and headed for Cootharaba Views lookout. The way is very undulating so be prepared for some steep climbs with rewards of long flowy down hills. By flowing I don’t mean bike park flow, I mean long windy, sometimes rutty and rocky fire trails lined with big beautiful eucalypts.

Cootharaba Views always delights. It has big sweeping views to the east, across the hinterland and lake Cootharaba to

the Pacific Ocean and to the west is also beautiful if you don’t look down to the quarry.

Next is another of those long windy descents down to Sheppersons lane where you’ll find a loo and a nice shady park. From here you can take the short cut, signed, across the paddocks into Kin Kin or, as we did, turn right and take the longer challenging route via Bunneys & Wahpunga lanes. Don’t miss all the nice windy, shady single trail in the bush on the left of Wahpunga lane. Left into Grady’s Lane, a few big hills that the E-bikes cruise up and we are rolling into Kin Kin’s Black Ant for a coffee and a brekky wrap.

From here there are a number of choices to finish the loop, we chose trail 3 to KinKin rd then Camphor Rd - trail 2 to Middle Lookout.

E-bikes really do open up your options for exploring this picturesque trail network without taking too many hours out of your busy day.

Enjoy the ride! Andy FlanaganMountain biker, Unicyclist, Senior Mechanic at Spoke N Trail and lover of the great outdoors!

RESIDENTS can have a say about existing indoor leisure facilities and provide suggestions for how to meet future needs. There are prizes on offer. Mayor Clare Stewart said there will be further opportunities to offer feedback at various stages of the project.

“Although Noosa Leisure Centre is the shire’s largest indoor court-based facility, it reaches capacity during peak demand periods,” Mayor Stewart said.

“Population growth and increasing participation in traditional and new indoor sports are driving a need for indoor sports facilities.

LLEW O’BRIEN Federal Member for Wide Bay

ONE of my highlights each July is the annual King of the Mountain event at Pomona, where the community comes together to host a family friendly day out in one of the most picturesque hinterland towns on the Sunshine Coast.

The 2023 King of the Mountain is shaping up to be another fantastic day, with an amazing variety of activities on offer. Runners from far and wide are drawn to Pomona for the Mountain Challenge which is considered to be one of the world’s most gruelling races. Many of the Mountain Challenge competitors have been returning year after year, coming back to test themselves and their endurance against the Mt Cooroora circuit.

The juniors have their own challenge in conquering the Prince and Princess circuit, and the mountain bike ride is a great activity for families and an opportunity to explore and enjoy the beautiful Noosa Trail network.

There’ll be plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy, with the arts and craft market, antique fair, pony rides, live music, and sand sculpture in the park that includes kid’s play workshops.

The King of the Mountain is a wonderful example of community groups and local business working hand in hand to stage a festival that attracts visitors, showcases our gorgeous part of the world, and delivers

significant social and economic benefits to the region.

I’ve had to step my training this year after signing up my daughter to do the Mountain Challenge with me. I’m hoping the regional Parkrun’s I’ve been doing on Saturday’s will stand me in good stead in July, and that she won’t beat me by too much!

So, mark July 23 in your calendar and head to Pomona. I hope to see you there.

SUPPORTING EUMUNDI’S COMMUNITY GARDEN

I had great pleasure in meeting up with members of the Eumundi and District Community Association’s community garden recently.

The raised ‘wicking’ garden beds, made possible through a $6000 Stronger Communities Grant I helped secure, ensure all members of the community garden can access these very productive veggie patches. They are a great addition to the community garden and an excellent example of a water efficient gardening technique.

Congratulations to everyone involved in creating this wonderful community asset.

DIABETES ADVOCACY

15,000 Australian families have had the rug pulled out from underneath them after the Labor Government axed a life-changing medicine from the Pharmaceutical Benefits

Scheme (PBS) which is used to manage diabetes.

Without any consultation or support for the patients impacted, the Government has cut the medication from the PBS and has sent the price soaring from as low as $7 to $280 per script.

Local student Freya (14), who I first met in 2016, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 11 months of age. Freya and her mum Jackie are just one of 15,000 families who will suffer from this cold-hearted decision.

Although I welcome the recent decision to extend Fiasp on the PBS for a further 6 months, this is just a band-aid solution. I will continue to campaign for a permanent solution beyond October on behalf of 14 year old local, Freya, and the 15,000 other Australians who rely on Fiasp.

NEW LOCAL ROADS

I am proud to have secured 80% for the $301 million upgrade of the Maroochydore-Mons Rd Interchange on the Bruce Highway a few years ago.

The project reached another key milestone recently, with the new eastern and western service roads opening to traffic at Forest Glen and Chevallum respectively.

The practical benefit of these service roads is that motorists, pedestrians and cyclists no longer have to enter the Bruce Highway for local commutes around this area; getting people home sooner and safer.

ANZAC DAY

Anzac Day remains one of the most significant days on our national calendar, for very good reason. I was honoured to attend a number of services across the electorate again this year, including the local service hosted by the Eumundi & District Historical Society. At the service I was privileged to read the very poignant ‘In Flanders Fields’, which was written by a Canadian medical officer, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae in 1915. Sadly he was a casualty of that war in which he served, but his poem is a lasting legacy of the sacrifice, courage and bravery of those who served, not only in that conflict,

but all that followed. This year marks 108 years since the Anzac spirit was first forged, and long shall it live as we continue to pay our respects and pause to commemorate and reflect on the contribution every serviceman and woman has made.

SEIB ROAD PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE UPDATE

One of my proudest achievements since being elected is securing the funding for a new pedestrian bridge over North Maroochy River, at Seib Road. This funding was committed in 2020, and at the time we were confident construction would follow reasonably quickly once TMR and Council agreed on the final design.

Despite repeated assurances the project is on track, we now know there has been some delays with the design, however the good news is that these have been resolved, and we should see shovels in the ground before the end of the year.

As a community, we’ve been waiting for more than 20 years for this critical infrastructure, and I look forward to seeing work get underway in the near future.

NEWS FROM PARLIAMENT

Last month in Parliament, we witnessed a watershed moment when Labor finally, after eight years of watering down the youth justice laws, adopted the LNP’s policy for breach of bail. While this alone is no silver bullet

for solving the youth crime epidemic, it is an important step forward. We need to give police the resources and tough laws they need to do their job,and keep our community safe.

GRANT SUCCESS

Congratulations to Eumundi District Swimming Club, for scoring big in the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Their $24,587.33 grant will allow the Club to purchase new equipment to ensure they keep achieving so much success in the pool!

The next round of the Gambling Fund is open now, and closing on 31 May, 2023. For further information visit www.justice.qld. gov.au/initiatives/community-grants.
