Kin Kin locals stump Council

WHEN Noosa Councillor Brian Stockwell almost takes a mid-air catch while driving his electric bicycle and wearing a Viking helmet, you know it can only mean one thing. Yes, the annual Kin Kin vs Noosa Council Pink Stumps cricket match held at Kin Kin Oval was back on again, held on Sunday May 23. The origins of this extraordinary hinterland contest stretch back six years when a charity cricket game was devised

featuring then-mayoral contestants Tony Wellington, Sandy Bolton and Ray Kelly, according to Cr Joe Jurisevic, now the chief whip for the council’s team. According to the game’s founder and main organiser, Kin Kin’s own Anita Poteri, there are rules to the local version of the game, surprisingly enough. “You can drink beer on the pitch; you’ve got to wear a tutu when batting; and if a spectator manages to catch a six, the batsman’s out,” she explained. “Oh, and you can’t go out on a golden duck,” she quickly added – just as a hapless

Council staffer got bowled on their first ball. Kin Kin won on the day, with Ms Poteri herself vying for ‘man’ of the match with two handy wickets, including Cr Karen Finzel’s. The atmosphere was helped along by ‘sports commentators’ Kin Kin dads Chris Fuller and Scott Cairns who set a far more consistent, entertaining and downright funny ball-by-ball report than any sports media company could conjure up. As for the rules, well, some were added and some taken away as the game progressed. But this is Kin Kin after all, where the only surprising thing would be no surprises.

And it was all for a good cause, raising funds for the McGrath Foundation which raises money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia and increase breast health awareness, founded by legendary test bowler Glenn McGrath following the death of his wife Jane from the disease. “I met a McGrath’s nurse and looked into it,” Ms Poteri said. “They’re paid by fundraising; I thought I needed to do something to help. They help the cancer patients get through it, and help families get through it.”
