A sustainable revolution sweeping the Shire

NOOSA BIOSPHERE TRAIL U P G R A D E W I N S AWA R D

NOOSA Shire is leading the charge in a sustainability revolution, with households across the region making the switch to all-electric appliances and cars powered by clean electricity. This shift is not only slashing household expenses by up to 50% compared to those relying on fossil fuels, but it’s also making a significant positive impact on the climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from energy use. Zero Emissions Noosa Inc, supported by Noosa council, is producing a ‘Rewiring Noosa - Electrify Everything’ guide covering eight different technologies and strategies, including rooftop solar PV, heat pump hot water systems, pool pumps and heaters, home batteries, electric vehicles, and energy monitoring and control systems. Through a series of articles in Your Local

Lifestyle and at community forums, we will provide detailed information on the costs, savings, and benefits of each technology, helping residents make informed decisions about their energy usage. One of the key benefits of this approach is the potential for significant cost savings. For example, by switching to an electric vehicle, households can save up to $2,000 per year on fuel and maintenance costs. Similarly, by installing a solar hot water system, households can reduce hot water energy consumption by up to 65%, saving up to $500 per year on energy bills. NOOSA Council’s upgrade of the Cooroora Trail (Trail 5) on the Noosa Biosphere Trails has won an Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Qld Excellence Award. This scenic Noosa Biosphere Trail links Pomona to Cooran via an easy 9km one-way journey through the beautiful Tuchekoi National Park. The $1.68 million upgrade was possible thanks to funding from the Australian and Queensland governments’ Local Economic Recovery Program. Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation funded the initial Noosa Trail Masterplan, developed by Tourism Noosa who worked in partnership with Noosa Council on the trails project over several years.
