Let the Carnival begin

AS THE summer holiday season begins, Noosa’s own returned services club, Tewantin Noosa RSL, is gearing up to spread festive cheer with its 27th annual Christmas Carnival, happening on Sunday, December 10, 4-8pm.

One of the longest running Christmas events in the region, the carnival promises a spectacular evening filled with familyfriendly activities, entertainment, and a grand finale that will light up Noosa River like never before.

Highlights this year include the expanded array of free rides. From the exhilarating giant slide to the whimsical tea-cups, the challenging rock wall, and the thrilling ‘super flyer chair-o-plane’, there’s something for everyone seeking a dose of adrenaline-fueled fun.

Tewantin Noosa RSL is also providing a free animal farm, where families can interact with adorable creatures and create lasting memories. And you can grab a photo with the Nova Star Stiltwalker Angels.

At sunset, the carnival will come alive with the glow of enchanting products available for purchase, creating a vibrant and festive market ambiance.

For those feeling lucky, raffle tickets will be on sale, proceeds going towards supporting the RSL’s ongoing community initiatives.

And you can feast your senses at the food stalls, which are offering diverse culinary delights from savoury treats to sweet indulgences. Outlets include Noosa Lions Club, Neshama, Woodfired Pizza, Reka’s Eats, Mr Whippy and Fairy’s Floss.

This year’s on-stage entertainment lineup features Brett Campbell’s Children’s

Christmas Show which will mesmerise the little ones, while David Zuric and Amanda Jensen will showcase their musical talents.

Later, the carnival will crescendo with the soul-stirring Carols by Candlelight, featuring the Kitty Kats. You can buy candles and song-sheets for the event from the volunteers from KNGO Australia

The grand finale will be a breathtaking display of lights and colours as Noosa River becomes the backdrop for the biggest local fireworks display ever on the river.

THE idea started 22 years ago.

Then three years ago Chris Kennedy and his partner Joanne Hill met now-business partner Ward Morel, who had the same idea.

Working together as Kings Group, they are hoping to bring a state-of-theart, environmentally friendly car wash to Cooroy.

The three all live in Cooroy and Pomona.

All are currently running businesses on the Sunshine Coast, and are looking forward to opening the car wash in Cooroy due to the massive environmental benefits. Chris’s mum also runs a Maple St shop.

The proposed business is to be established on the land between Cooroy’s two service stations on Elm St, and it will cater for a wide variety of vehicles, including recreational vehicles, caravans and boats as well as vans and cars.

While the washes will be self-serve, they are considering adding a valet service in one of the super-bays “so people can go shopping or use the juice bar while they wait”.

Local staff will be employed in a range of duties, and if the proposal is approved by council, an operator will be sought to run the juice bar.

Significantly, it will access solar power to run, use roof-collected water and ensure post-wash runoff is treated, not just flowing into the stormwater system into rivers and out to sea.

The closest similar facilities can only be found in Noosaville at this time.

Joanne said it has been a long process to get to the point where their development application for the car wash and a juice bar with healthy food options is to be considered by Noosa Council.

“We wanted to make sure everything was good – we’ve done our homework, we sought advice from leading professionals in the fields of car wash architecture, economics, community needs, planning needs, carbon neutral offsetting, traffic and acoustic engineers, just to name a few,” she said.

Ward said they are “putting a lot of thought into the project with regard to the community [with this] as well, because this is our town”.

“If approved, we will have a dedicated space to allow local groups to set up onsite for fundraising activities,” he said.

“The supply chain will be kept as local as possible. We’re putting in a health food shop selling juices and gluten free items.

We will put in a safety hub for kids.

“We’re even putting in wheelchairaccessible public toilets which are not part of what’s necessary [in the application].”

Entry and exit from the car wash will be from side streets – Opal St and a widened Diamond Lane respectively – ensuring no potential traffic hazards on the busy main street.

A big key for the team is to blend into the “different by nature” theme of Noosa Council, which has an enviable reputation for environmental considerations.

“Council cares for the environment as we do, and the amount of water [from the car wash] will not go into stormwater, reducing the pollution of our waterways and water consumption significantly,” Ward said.

“We can measure it by the number of vehicles. Every vehicle washed at home sends an average of 750mls of black oily sludge into the stormwater system and therefore our creeks and rivers. We would love this to be our legacy, knowing that we have left our waterways cleaner than we found them.

“We believe that if our application is approved then our facility will set new benchmarks for future builds in car washes, with regards to being as clean, green and sustainable as possible.”

collaboration “POMONA? Perfection!” says Noosa councillor Karen Finzel, reflecting on the first time she set eyes on the town she has called home for nearly 40 years.

Karen and her husband Craig moved from Brisbane in 1985 with a baby, Joshua, in tow and another, Zach, on the way.

“We settled in Noosa to raise a family, care for the natural environment and contribute in a meaningful way to our community,” she says.

“There we lots of people in a similar situation to us; new to the area and with young kids. No one had family nearby, so our friends – our community – became our family.

“At the start it was just helping each other to get by. Everyone chipped in to build each other’s houses, provide childcare and get small businesses up and running.”

Another child came – a girl, Rebekah – and as the Finzel family was expanding, the hinterland community and its needs were evolving, so Karen joined with friends and neighbours to push for change.

“In the 90s there were no activities for kids in the hinterland, so we advocated for the construction of the Pomona playground and skatepark,” Karen says. “We worked to get the kindergarten accredited as a learning centre too.”

“We probably ruffled a few feathers at local government along the way, but we had to in order to get things done for our community.

“Local people understand best where the gaps and opportunities are. That’s why their voices and their stories are so important.”

In 1993, the Finzel family were expecting a fourth child when Karen received a lifealtering diagnosis; she had cervical cancer.

After baby Hannah was brought into the world, Karen immediately went into treatment and won the battles, and, ultimately, the war against cancer.

“That was undoubtedly one of the hardest periods of my life and I couldn’t have gotten through it without my family, community and medical professionals,” she says.

Through her journey, Karen also received support from the Gynaecological Cancer Society and – after being declared cancerfree – joined forces with them to help others.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is a terrifying and bizarre moment – you don’t know what to do or how to feel,” she says.

“I received specialised training to provide emotional support for people diagnosed with gynaecological cancer and advocated to government for improved education, prevention and care.

“Often people don’t have someone who can empathise with their situation and give advice, so I was very glad to be able to

provide support where I could.”

Karen continued working in the medical sector as an administrator at Eden Private Hospital in Cooroy.

She worked there for 10 years, a period in which she also completed a counselling diploma, before being elected to council in 2020.

“Representing the people of Noosa is the greatest honour and a privilege,” Karen says.

“It has also been an opportunity to take the connections and lessons from decades as a community organiser to strengthen our local government.

“Every day I draw on those experiences and the diversity of perspectives in our community to bring authentic representation to the council chamber.”

Throughout everything, one constant for Karen has been art – originally as a creator and then (perhaps unsurprisingly) as an organiser.

She has helped to provide platforms for Noosa’s artist community, including through the iconic Tall Trees Art Festival and as a committee member for Noosa Open Studios.

“Art is about telling stories – often the stories of people who don’t otherwise have a voice,” Karen says.

“As a councillor, I think the job is similar – we need to listen to the community and provide them with an opportunity to have their voice heard.

Kin Kin Community spirit shines bright

A LOT has happened in Kin Kin this year.

Don’t be misled by this quiet village – it has a thriving community supporting many residents of all generations.

Come along to the community sports ‘Fun and Feed’ night, the mothers’ group, monthly Sunday market or community morning tea, and you’ll see the spirit shining through, all developed by the Kin Kin Community Group (KKCG).

KKCG has worked passionately this year to bring back its community hub Kin Kin Community House.

The renewal project has been a key focus for locals to have a meeting place for social connections and events.

Located in the heart of Kin Kin Village, the Community House is situated on the hill overlooking the picturesque sports oval – and has one unique story to tell.

The upper part of the building was once part of the school located at Kin Kin Junction. It sat by Pomona Kin Kin Rd at Eastern Branch Rd. It opened in 1909, and there are locals still living here who were schooled there.

Closing in 1981, it was relocated to the village and given a new ground floor, until 2019 hosting celebrations and meetings – but due to nesting microbats, it was locked

up and, along with COVID community connection was lost.

Three years later, Noosa Council restored the building with fresh new charm.

Through community grants, locals and volunteers, Kin Kin has now regained its

hub, and is reaching out to the community to let them know ‘What’s On’.

It’s been an amazing outcome over this past year – and now, the Christmas spirit is here.

The Kin Kin Christmas Party is on Saturday, December 9, with much to be celebrated.

THE grand reopening of the Kin Kin Hotel, after an extensive renovation, is set to breathe new life into the heart of this quaint community.

The wait has been worth it, as the meticulous restoration work has breathed new life into the old establishment.

Stepping inside will be like taking a journey through time, with carefully restored heritage features echoing the tales of generations past. Original brass room numbers, lovingly restored, proudly stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time, ready to see out another century.

A unique touch to the Kin Kin Hotel’s revival comes in the form of custom beer tap handles, a labor of love by local craftsman John Reeves.

Here’s to the next chapter in the history of the Kin Kin Hotel. Cheers!

EXPRESSIONS of interest (EOI) have opened for a major component of the proposed pumped hydro project at Borumba Dam, near Imbil.

The EOI is for underground works that will contribute to creating a dam above the current one, using controlled blast and drilling works rather than a tunnel bore, forming a D-shaped tunnel leading to the site.

Borumba is the first of two sites being developed for hydro power and will produce 2000 megawatts of power when complete. It will power up from excess solar and wind power gathered in Southeast Queensland and be capable of lighting up two million households. Once fully underway, the project’s main works will create more than 2000 jobs during construction, boosting the local economy.

FOR Patrick Handley that moment was in Chicago in late 2004 when he saw the transformative design possibilities for water features and ponds being achieved

by Aquascape Inc. “I called up the CEO and said Greg, I want to take this to Australia. I was hoping for some support or something I don’t know, but there was just silence. I thought, I am going to take this back to Australia and I knew it was going to take years and years Page 10 | Your Local Lifestyle December 2023

but it was like that lightning bolt moment because I could see that you could build things like this.” He sweeps his arm toward the stunning waterscape stream and garden behind the deck, the relaxed setting for our meeting.

The waterscape is the showpiece of Aquascape Australia’s Yandina base. It looks like a naturally flowing pristine creek, with a constant water flow creating the soothing sound of burbling water.

“I could see you could build something

beautiful. Not concrete everywhere. You are treating the water right and it’s really simple. There is nothing complicated about it. There’s no obvious pumps and filters that you can see. It’s very simple, there’s no complicated filtration equipment, it’s just water passing through surface area that supports colonies of bacteria which do the filtering, in combination with aquatic plants.”

Patrick is the founder of Waterscapes Australia and he introduced Aquascape

design and products to this country. The eldest child born to parents who chose their own path, Patrick has never lost his childhood fascination for the discovery of water and the life that it supports.

In the early 1970’s Patrick grew up on a commune in the Yarra Valley where his father built some of the houses. His father was following the emerging philosophical thoughts of the time which led people back to the land to grow their own food and establish like-minded communities.

“Dad was more of a philosopher but he was also trying to be practical, he was a carpenter. We had bookshelves full of books on permaculture, biodynamics and natural sciences and philosophy. So we were brought up with that kind of thinking as well. And then he had eight kids,” Patrick says laughing. “He started late, he was 45 when I was born, then he had seven more children after that. He had been doing a lot of work in Victoria, regenerating land and building mud brick houses. He was into alternate building styles.”

Patrick’s mother always said her son was experimenting with nature from an early age, busy making water gardens in baking trays out of moss, water and rocks. Inspired by his parents, Patrick went on to study horticulture at Gatton University (now UQ Gatton campus).

“I was always growing things anyway so I went and studied horticulture and I also did my Permaculture Design Course in the early eighties out at Crystal Waters with Robin Clayfield. From there I actually worked a bit with Jeff Lawton and then we went to South America. I was going for six months to work and I ended up staying for seven years. I left in 1994 when I was 24, with $600 and a return ticket.”

During those years Patrick was based mostly in Ecuador, but found opportunities to work in the biospheres of the Amazon, the Sierra, the coastal areas and in between.

“I worked with orphanages and I had my own business where I helped some communities with recycling and food security. I worked with Spanish NGO’s. I ran introduction courses on permaculture and that’s what I was there doing, trying to make something of it and trying to live as well. I did a bit of travelling, in Columbia and Peru and a little bit in Guatemala.”

He followed his heart to Canada, where he married and established a small business.

“Initially in Canada I was landscaping and building ponds the ‘traditional’ way but the actual technique didn’t make sense, and what was being built didn’t make sense to me and I thought, there has got to be a better way to make it look natural and to recreate what I see in nature.”

And that is where he was introduced to the wonderful world of Pondemonium, the leading event in the water garden industry.

As that door opened, his marriage ended and Patrick was a long way from home.

“I got divorced. I came back to Australia with enough to buy a ute and a wheelbarrow and a shovel. And it was like, ok, back to it again. I had quite a good business in Canada, but after the divorce it was time to come home.”

Today Patrick attributes his success to always moving outside his comfort zone, taking that next step and the occasional risk.

“I started with a pallet of some pond liner and a pump and a bit of gear to build. It was a grass roots thing then, before most of the internet was there, and I called myself Waterscapes Australia just because if I am going to do it, I have to do it all over Australia. My idea was to develop (the business) to a point where other guys were doing it as well, and I would train and supply equipment for them.”

“I was just learning everything.

I built my own websites, my own shopping sites. I did everything.

The websites were to showcase what we were building in the early 2000’s, using my projects, which at the time were pretty simple.”

Starting from a humble garage, to rented spaces and battling for leases, Aquascape Australia is now an international business, with a head office and warehouse thoughtfully designed by Patrick to maximise views to Mt Ninderry.

“I pretty much did the entrepreneur thing, which was 16-18 hours a day. I would get up early, pack orders and send, get the trucks ready, get the guys ready, go do the jobs, go quote the jobs, come back do the estimates, look at the orders, do that and go back to bed again. I was single at the time, which was a good thing I suppose” It now employs a dedicated team at the warehouse and around Australia and distributes supplies all over Australia, to the Middle East, Asia and India. Patrick has created a team of over forty Aquascape Certified Aquascape Contractors.

“We provide all the contractors with education, that’s the key. That is what I really do enjoy, seeing these guys succeed in what they do.

They are improving the ecology and the people around them.”

The supply business has taken off and the original business Waterscapes Australia now ticks along as Patrick’s design consultancy and installation platform. In 2019 Waterscapes Australia built Australia’s first recreational lake at Woodford, on the 500 acre site known as Woodfordia. Unlike conventional pools, they rely on a strongly balanced eco-system and don’t use any type of conventional filtration technology.

“Lake Gkula is the biggest in the southern hemisphere in the style that we do and the largest Aquascape system in the world. It took five months. Three weeks excavating and about four months building. We did the project on budget. For me it wasn’t a

“I had been working with a bunch of contractors. Ben Harris, he was my first Aquascape contractor and he’s a really good designer. Then I called in other guys. I got about twelve guys from around Australia and we all stayed on site. A few local guys

were on it as well. So I designed it and Ben did the drawings and then we worked out materials and we were right on target.”

The project took 2000 tonnes of boulder, 2000 cubic metres of pebble, 900 tonne of sand and masses of pond liner. Plants and aquatics were introduced a few months later once the water chemistry had settled.

“We created spaces for the aquatic life. We made a cod hole with overhanging logs which is down about 4 and half metres. The deepest point is 5.5 metres. We’ve got hollow logs and all the endemic species of the area, fish like rainbows and spangled perch plus native aquatic plants. I was out there recently and it is absolutely incredible. It’s so clear and there are lung fish, turtles, Mary River cod,” he says proudly.

“When I came back to Australia, I was challenged and told, it’s a dry continent why would people want to build creeks and ponds? And I said, well the drier it is,

the more creeks and ponds we are going to want because we want to have water within our living areas, and in our environment to support the life around us. It’s an enjoyable thing. Then it’s a matter of doing it wisely.”

“I never imagined that this would happen, but for me I really enjoy it, especially seeing the satisfaction that the teams get.” Patrick calls it, ecology in motion, improving the ecology for all living things, including us.

Apollonian Hotel: More than just Pub Life!

ASK the locals of the quiet little town 15 minutes north of Noosa Heads, and most joke it’s the best pub in town (being the only pub in the vicinity), but those that give it a little more thought declare it’s the community centre of the town!

Since the relocation of the building to Boreen Point back in the 1980’s, the Paynter family has continued the tradition of good food, friendly staff, relaxing atmosphere and maintained the buildings’ beautiful heritage and style (amongst a few leasings of the Hotel over the last 35 years

LAST month community groups gathered at Cooroy RSL for a second round under their community giving program, resulting in a record amount of community donations this year supporting over 40 local organisations with more than $100,000!

This funding has enabled local community organisations to deliver a wide range of services and activities to our community with the help of their dedicated volunteers.

Youth sports was a popular category with support going to groups such as Cooroora Netball, Collins Dressage,

Eumundi District Swim Club, Pomona AFL, Cooroora United Football, and Cooroy and Pomona Pony Clubs.

Community and fundraising events such as the Cooroy Ambulance Centenary event, Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival, Eumundi Christmas Extravaganza, Noosa Show, Pink Up Cooroy Breast Cancer Fundraiser, and the Australian Body Art Festival were also supported.

Equipment for our locals schools, youth groups and funding for fantastic local organisations providing support to those in need was also included.

The list continues with funding for

exhibitions at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, fridges for Combined Coastal Car Club, kitchen flooring for Permaculture Noosa, mental health and social inclusion activities for Noosa Landcare, website development for Urban Wildlife Program, operational support for Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens, and history was also not forgotten with display cases for Noosa Museum.

Many other organisations were also supported with in-kind support and prizes for raffles and auctions.

New book celebrates local wildlife EVER seen a platypus leap out of the water? How about a butterfly landing on the wing of a hovering bird-of-prey? Our regular contributor, Tony Wellington, spends enough time wandering the region’s wild places to not only witness such natural marvels, but also capture them with his camera.

Tony has just produced another superb book about our local wildlife. Titled The Nature of Noosa, it’s an impressive coffeetable book with over 200 pages of full colour images.

“My previous wildlife book, Wild About Noosa, published in 2020, was well and truly out of stock, yet local book retailers were pleading for more,” Wellington said.

“I had the choice of either reprinting that book or creating a new one. The latter was the more appealing option. It provided me with the opportunity to showcase recent photographs, as well as go hunting for exciting new images to include.”

“The Nature of Noosa features many creatures that didn’t appear in my previous wildlife book. All 350 images in The Nature of Noosa are previously unpublished. This new book is very much about animal behaviour, but there are a few landscape

images celebrating our diverse ecosystems.”

Tony is probably best known to readers of Your Local Lifestyle for his monthly wildlife articles. He also appears on ABC Coast FM each Tuesday afternoon chatting about wildlife with Annie Gaffney. As well as being a former mayor of Noosa, he has also authored books on music in the sixties and seventies. Both music and nature provide him with solace.

“I’m an early riser, and there’s nothing I enjoy more than walking the varied landscapes of our spectacular region before breakfast. Early morning is when most of our non-human neighbours are most active.”

WILD ABOUT NOOSA HINTERLAND

AS can be deduced from their name, the preferred food of the Mistletoebird is the fruit of the mistletoe plant. Mistletoes are parasites that cling to the branches of host trees, from which they extract nutrients.

The Mistletoebird has a modified digestive tract to accommodate this diet. They don’t have a grinding gizzard, and the fruits even bypass the stomach, instead going straight to the small intestine. Here the outer, pulpy layer is digested, and the seed is released within 4 to 12 minutes after being eaten.

What’s more, Mistletoebirds have evolved so that they do their business in a very particular manner. Unlike most birds which hang their posteriors over the edge of their perch, these birds turn sideways when they defecate, so their poo lands directly onto the branch, not the ground below. The seed retains a sticky coating which serves as glue.

Studies have shown that Mistletoebirds can process an amazing 60,000 seeds per hectare in a single fruiting season.

The folklore about kissing under mistletoe dates back to Norse mythology in which a female god declared mistletoe to be a symbol of love. She thus promised to kiss anyone who passed underneath it. Given the mistletoe plant’s prevalence locally, particularly on eucalypts and wattles, that might demand an awful lot of smooching when walking through the Australian bush.

Sarah and Jody’s amazing journey

NOOSA’S hinterland communities still have a bucolic, laid-back, non-metropolitan feel about them, and we all love that – it’s why we’re here.

But that doesn’t mean we miss out on accessing highquality retirement and business mentoring and advisory services normally found only in major centres.

When Sarah Keily and Jody Alden started Sunny Coast Accountants seven years ago working part-time, they had plans to enjoy running a small business while enjoying the country life.

But they also caught a wave of growth that has since been happening across Noosa hinterland.

“We were just doing school hours, working from home,” Sarah said.

“We wanted to offer a service that wasn’t time/costdriven, as many accountancy businesses are.”

The pair brought diverse skills learned from previous businesses including a local outfit – and a client empathy that had an immediate impact on female business operators.

“We mainly service small business and self-managed super find clients,” Sarah said.

“Many women run businesses in this region, and we further provide mentoring, helping with pricing and margins, business forecasting, bookkeeping, BAS returns and more.”

It wasn’t a deliberate strategy to target female business owners, but that’s how much of their business has worked out - and clearly, they have tapped into a rich vein of local business need.

“And now Sunny Coast Accountants has grown from two part-timers in Jody and me, to nine staff in seven years,” Sarah said.

The phenomenal growth is continuing with another staff member in 2024, while they employed their first male staffer just this year.

Sunny Coast Accountants now has clientele across the entire hinterland, and has just relocated to operate out of its new Myall St, Cooroy offices.

“This is our third office in six years,” Sarah said.

“We’ve outgrown the others.”

She said all staff are locals, “and we don’t use outsourcing services”.

QUINCE AND CIDER GLAZED LEG HAM

INGREDIENTS: 1 whole Bone–in Leg Ham 200gm quince paste 200ml apple cider 2 tbs apple cider vinegar Handful of whole cloves

GLAZING your own ham can be very satisfying, and the smell as you’re slowly cooking and basting it fills the whole house with beautiful Christmassy aromas. There are lots of things you can glaze a ham with, and it’s lots of fun experimenting with different flavours to come up with your own signature ham.

Starting out with a good quality ham is important, and we’re lucky enough to have two amazing free range pork producers in the region, Piggy in the Middle in Kilkivan,

and Forage Farms in Kybong. Both are still taking ham orders until early December but get in quick before they run out. Look on their websites for details on how to order one.

I have always found that using a whole, bone in leg of smoked ham is preferable.

Although it seems like a lot you can always cut pieces off and give them to friends (they’ll love you for it) and believe me, once it’s in your fridge, it has a magical way of drawing you back every ten minutes to cut off another slice.

The issue with glazing a 10kg ham is that you need a pretty big oven to bake it in. You can cut it in half first and do it in two goes if you need to. I use a knife to cut through to the joint, then a clean hacksaw to cut through the bone if necessary.

If you are doing a whole ham, the first thing you need to do is carefully remove the skin. I leave about the first 10cm of the

shank still covered with skin so you have something to grip. Cut a line around the shank through the skin and then slowly with the tip of your knife, work the skin away from you trying not to remove any of the beautiful creamy fat.

Once the skin is removed, score the fat lightly across the ham on a diagonal about 2cm apart, then back the other way to form diamond shapes. Don’t cut into the fat too far or the diamonds sometimes fall off while you’re baking your ham.

Next, stud each square with a whole clove, using the pointed end like the point of a nail, and pressing them in with your thumb.

To make the glaze, cut the quince paste into small dice, and place into a small saucepan with the apple cider and apple cider vinegar. Heat gently until the quince paste has melted and the glaze is about the consistency of tomato sauce.

Place the ham on a wire rack sitting inside a tray and add about a centimeter of water (this will stop any excess glaze from burning on the tray and save some scrubbing later).

Brush the glaze over the ham and place in a preheated 140 °C oven for 20 minutes.

Remove from the oven, brush with more glaze and return to the oven for another 15 minutes. I like to keep doing this until all of the glaze is used up. (About 2 hours) That way you get a nice thick, rich coating that really infuses into your ham.

Remember, you’re not cooking the ham, it’s already cooked, so you’re really just baking the glaze onto it.

Allow the ham to cool well, then wrap tightly with plastic wrap.

It will keep well in the fridge for about one week.

Life on the shoreline

MITCHELL English is a Noosa based contemporary artist and a familiar face around the national park surf spots.

Paddling out for a dawn surf, or casually observing the late afternoon beach crowd, Mitch is never too far from the shoreline.

As a full time artist, he has successfully walked that line between the commercial and critical art worlds. Painting for over thirty years, Mitch’s work is now held in public collections within Australia and private collections all over the world. He has exhibited in Indonesia, Germany and Italy and widely within Australia in solo and group shows.

Locals may have seen a large scale production of his coastal-inspired work on the Spit Van. The converted caravan come coffee and food outlet at the Noosa Spit is wrapped in the artwork ‘Golden Summer’.

It was always going to be art for Mitch.

“My earliest memory of art is being five years old and winning a painting prize from the local council, the junior painting prize."

Mitch grew up in Sydney, on the Manly beaches and later at Bondi.

“I have never lived further than walking distance to the beach. I left home at 15 and I made sure I always had enough money to live at the beach," he says laughing.

I visited Mitch on a work day in his comfortably organised Noosaville studio.

He works surrounded by surfing books and music, photographs, bits of colour inspiration and paintings at various stages.

Busy finalising a new solo show, Mirror Maze, opening at Sydney Road Gallery in Balgowlah, which will see a return to his hometown roots, I was curious to know how Noosa is treating him and the family.

“Best thing we ever did," he says referring

to the move north in 2018, with partner Chelsea Miller and son Duke. “I wish we had done it sooner."

Mitch’s work is now largely informed

by Noosa and the people he sees on the beach. He will study the crowd for reference material and take shots on his iPhone. “Since moving to Noosa I am actually painting from photographs taken in late afternoon. If you look at the pictures the shadows are long because I am photographing people late in the afternoon.

As a painter of colour it doesn’t interest me to take photos in the middle of the day because so much is washed out. So all my paintings start with a cadmium yellow background and by the time the picture is finished you will get just hints of the yellow.

That’s just the sunlight, a tinge, that late afternoon glow that we get.”

There is a sentimentality to Mitch’s beach scenes that is quite nostalgic. He captures a

more typically laid back time in Australian beach life and surf culture.

“Nostalgia is a dirty word with a lot of people, because it’s regressive. But I actually think people connect with the paintings I do, because it reminds them of a much simpler time. The retro colours I use, the imagery is almost simplistic, and that’s very reassuring to people.”

Mitch admits that he is obsessed with the beach and the freedom that it allows the individual.

“My work is not politically charged and it’s not that challenging but there are undercurrents to it.

"There is no class divide on our beaches. I really believe that once your clothes come off and you are on the beach no one knows who you are, or what background you have. It’s a great leveller. At the beach, it’s just you versus the elements and you are all in it together.” www.mitchellenglish.com.au

THE Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre celebrates December with its annual Butter Factory Friends prize exhibition titled Eclectica.

SO these days it’s more than a tough gig getting into the market for any musician than ever.

But that doesn’t sway Noosa District High School (NDHS) student Jemzel Costales. The 17-year-old Year 11 student is already making small but steadily growing waves into that wall of sound, with numerous streaming outlets and video taking her music to the world.

Some platforms have returned as many as 400,000 hits/views – not bad for a new young performer.

Her stage name just Jemzel, she currently lives in Nambour, but has not only been a Rockhampton, Cooroy and Eumundi resident in her short life to date, she’s also spent a year living in the Philippines.

Not surprising, given her parents are Filipino. And the same goes for her often being compared to global Filipina performer beabadoobee.

“In a Filipino family, I grew up around music,” Jemzel said.

“They’re a very musical people; they have karaoke at every party. And I have lots of relatives who play instruments and sing.”

Jemzel is largely self-taught in music, living in the osmosis of a musical family.

“I remember at age seven I taught myself how to play ukelele even before I had a ukelele.

“I eventually ventured into other instruments. But I’ve always been singing, ever since I could talk.”

Guitar is now her main instrument, but she knows her way around a keyboard, also drums and bass.

As for influences, Jemzel remains global, saying there’s something to learn from everything.

“Honestly, I take inspiration from every type of music I listen to, even if I’m not that into the genre. I take things like the melodies, chord progressions, production styles, everything. I’m a sponge.”

Perhaps naturally, with a Filipina

background, she admires the success of beabadoobee.

“I get compared to her quite a bit because she’s also Filipina and we both lean towards the alternative type of music scene,” Jemzel said.

“Seeing someone who’s Filipina, female and in a genre that not many people would expect and she’s thriving there, that’s someone to look up to.”

Jemzel’s a songwriter as well as performer, and focuses on her own personal experiences for lyrical inspiration.

“Songwriting is very important to me.

Some say lyrics don’t matter but I hold my songwriting very close to my heart.

“Also, many people write about hypothetical situations - to me it’s about personal feelings, personal experiences, emotions, telling my story as best as I can.”

Most of Jemzel’s appearances have been through her school, but she broke the mould recently when supporting Australian artist Mo’Ju at a concert, playing a 30-minute set.

Jemzel has good things to say about her school’s support.

“The [NDHS] school musical environment is so great. I’m very lucky; a lot of artists say they got made fun of being a ‘music kid’ at school. My school is a very supportive environment.

"They get us into gigs, parades, lunchtime stuff, and trying to get stuff out of school.

“This year I’m lighting the tree at Christmas in Cooroy (On December 8).

“I’ll play there, too, at the Butter Factory.

“Coming to Christmas in Cooroy and having watched other people light the tree, and this year it’s me!”

Jemzel can be found on all major streaming services. She has her own Youtube channel, and was crowned Triple J Unearthed High 2022’s Class Shakespeare.

Her song Tell Nobody is making major waves, along with her other compositions also gaining traction on TikTok.

For the past ten years, Susan Dearnley has been delighting Noosa audiences with the summer pantomimes she has directed for Noosa Arts Theatre. Many young actors

DOORS open for Little Seed Theatre Company’s 2024 Enrolments on Friday December 15.

As Little Seed Theatre Company gears up to celebrate 15 years of operation, company director, Johanna Wallace says they have come a long way since their early days. In 2009 she took over teaching three acting classes that were being run out of Noosa Arts Theatre. There may have been 25-30 students all up.

Gradually Johanna kept adding students, classes and then staff as things grew.

Fifteen years after starting out, Little Seed offers training in Acting for Stage and Screen, Musical Theatre and Dance, welcoming over 200 students through their programs. This year they have staged eight major shows as well as attending Eisteddfods, Theatre Festivals and putting on showcases. It’s been a huge, fun year filled to the brim with story and song.

Several graduating Little Seed Grade 12 students have been placed in full time performing arts programs for 2024.

In 2024 Little Seed is looking to expand again, offering preprep acting classes to help little ones grow in confidence prior to starting school. These classes will be held during morning hours and will offer a fun and friendly opportunity for creativity and learning.

With a full season of shows in store for 2024, Little Seed will be back with their popular musicals presented by both their primary and secondary musical theatre students, their well loved Shakespeare at the Lake production and their crowd favourite week-long holiday programs. As the team get ready to announce all that 2024 has in store, the company is looking to welcome new faces to join.

Naughty but Nice Instead of a write up to close the year out, I decided to include a fun little workout for you to try instead. This fun & festive inspired program isn’t going to take up too much of your time; it doesn’t really require any equipment as such and it will allow you to be jolly, without the guilts.

So… put on your Santa suit and get ready to sleigh this workout!!! Enjoy. E x WARM UP (Make sure you are in close proximity to your Christmas Tree) Jog on the spot, adding punches out to the front. If you have been slack and yet to decorate your tree, you can add some slight resistance by holding on to baubles and tinsel and hanging them on your tree as you jog.

2-3 minutes. Or as long as it takes to make your tree look pretty.

SQUAT/ PRESS(ENT) Stand with your feet a little wider than hip distance apart, toes slightly turning out. Bend your knees, hinge forward at the hips but keep your chest up. Drive through your heels as you come up. As you come up, reach up for the ceiling. This will help to elevate the heart rate slightly.

If you’re feeling a tad snoopy and no one is around, when you squat down, grab a present with your name on it and as you’re pressing it up towards the ceiling, give it a subtle shake or two.

This will add a bit more resistance and help to lift the heart rate a bit more with the excitement of wondering what is inside!

3 x 15 HO HO HO (HO) PLANK Take your elbows to the ground under your

shoulders, lock your legs out, tuck your hips under slightly and lock your core. Press up to your hands, and then back down to your elbows in time while deeply saying HO, HO, HO, (HO).

Remember to alternate sides with the press up.

Can also be performed on your knees.

3 x 45 sec REINDEER SPRINTS Channel your inner reindeer and get prancing!

Focus on good posture, getting your knees up as high as you can, staying light on your hooves and go for speed. Pumping the arms helps to get your knees up higher, which makes you work harder.

Reindeer antlers optional.

3 x 45 sec RUM BALL CURLS Grab a handful (or bowlful) of your freshly rolled rum balls. Stand up nice and tall, with one ball in each hand (more depending how big your hands are, or how empty your stomach is…). Keep your knees soft and lock your core. Extend both arms beside your body and curl up – making sure hands reach around… mouth height. Then take arms back down to full extension, reloading. Can be performed alternating or both arms together.

Depends how hungry and adventurous you are.

3 x 20 (up to you, but I’d advise to skip reloading the hands EVERY curl….)

LUNCHTIME LUNGES Lunchtime is always fun, but especially over Christmas!!!

So, to avoid any feelings of guilt over how many chicken thighs, leg ham or the QUADripple servings of peachy pavlova you devour, get to work and work those delicious and deserving areas.

3 x 20 alternating CHRISSY CARD CRUNCHES They almost seem to be a thing of the past, but luckily a great aunt or two usually still takes the time to sit down and write out a lovely Christmas Card each year that can be hung up or placed on the mantle. And if you’re lucky, you may even get a run-down letter of what 2023 entailed.

So instead of making a cuppa and sitting down to read… Roll out your mat and get crunching instead. Lay down on your back, knees bent with your feet to the floor. Lock your core and tilt your pelvis up slightly to help engage deep. Place the card in an easily readable spot to avoid straining of the neck and eyeballs.

Crunch up to get shoulder blades up off your mat, read a line or two. Then lower. As you lower, try to maintain connection with your spine on the mat. Breath in as you lower, out as you come up. Focus deep. And make sure you are sending a thoughtful reply card back!

Dr Huw Adams grew up in Cardiff, Wales and graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2014. After completing his residency program in the UK, he lived and worked on the Sunshine Coast from 2016 to 2020 at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Following completion of his General Practice training in the UK, the lure of warm weather and sunny beaches (and his Australian wife Hannah) have brought Dr Adams back to Queensland. Dr Adams is interested in all aspects of General Practice, with a particular interest in men’s health, cardiovascular health and chronic disease management.

He is available Monday to Friday and welcomes new and existing patients.

DR GABBY JARRETT Dr Gabby Jarrett completed her medical training in Queensland, working across multiple hospitals in both metropolitan and rural ßsettings. Creative Connections at Pomona Community House

HAVE you heard about the Creative Connections social group at Pomona & District Community House (PCH)?

Facilitated by community members Celine Roth and Heather Murphy, the group is a chance to grow your imagination, make new friends, explore and have fun.

Celine is an emerging art therapist and believes in the power of creativity for healing. She feels so lucky to be part of the

vibrant community spirit of Pomona and knows strong community is built on strong connections. Celine, who loves working with clay and making collages out of paper and found objects, thought creative gatherings would be a great way to further connect and support community wellbeing.

That’s when she met local visual artist Heather.

Heather in recent years has been exploring the benefits of creative play and how the making of art helps move the brain out of trauma and into healing. They both love sharing their skills. Celine explained “I enjoy unearthing expressive skill and capabilities through making with people who thought they had no artistic fibre in their body."

All materials provided and no experience needed. Creative Connections meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, 10am2pm (December 5, 19 and January 16).

Pomona & District Community House have loved supporting community this year and wish you all an enjoyable festive season. Work Christmas parties and FOOD. School break-up parties and FOOD. Neighbourhood Christmas parties and FOOD. Sport club Christmas parties and FOOD. Street parties and FOOD. Oh, and then there is the alcohol, right?

It can get really overwhelming if you are someone who obsesses about your health or your weight, but here are a few things that may help you enjoy your Christmas holidays instead of dreading them.

First, put on your big girl/boy pants. You are in charge of you and your choices. So don’t let peer pressure from the mob decide for you when it comes to food or alcohol.

Second, be comfortable enough in your own skin to not have to run with the mob.

Third, there will always be healthier options but choose a bit of both. Don’t deny yourself.

Fourth, slowdown. Take your time when choosing what you want to eat. Eat slowly and enjoy every mouthful. Use a smaller plate and don’t eat while your mind is occupied with other things.

Last but not least, cherish the time you spend with family and friends. Live, love, laugh, eat and be merry. Remember what Christmas is supposed to be about!!

Embracing the unknown IN this wild and crazy life, we can find ourselves entangled in a web of thoughts that echo our personal struggles. I recently found myself asking “What’s the third thing?” as I faced two unexpected challenges. The problem is that narrative had me focused on something I didn’t want.

I shifted the language of my queries, instead asking questions that were invitations to explore a landscape of possibilities. Questions like “What would it take to find peace in this moment?” and “What is my one next step?” became a guiding light. What I found is that the essence lies not in hastily finding answers but in the art of continuous enquiry.

This practice is akin to an awakening, a gradual revealing that removes the weight of constant problem-solving. This way of being allows you to reflect on a question, allowing it to percolate through your thoughts and emotions. What unfolds is an array of unexpected opportunities and insights.

Now, you may be curious, how does this process work? Enter the Reticular Activating System (RAS), a mental filter that, in simpler terms, acts as your brain’s search engine. Imagine it as a guide, directing your attention to what matters most. By consistently asking gentle and empowering questions, you activate your RAS, training your mind to seek

The free program will commence in 2024 with sessions made available to residential care facility residents in addition to members of the public.

The program will be delivered by a Sunshine Coast-based artist educator, and supported by Noosa Regional Gallery volunteers.

In readiness for the new program, the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in collaboration with Noosa Regional Gallery will present a specialised training workshop for local arts and health professionals.

“Drawing on the knowledge and expertise of participants, the workshop will foster community partnerships in building a sustainable program suited to the local community," says Noosa Regional Gallery Education and Public Programs Officer Brooke Bowtell.

Looking back on 2023 WOW another year over, thanks for all your support and kind words through the year.

Let’s have a look back on the year, just in case you missed one of the beautiful places to explore over the festive season.

I started the year on the Noosa Trail Network Cooran to Pomona section. The trail is now completely upgraded and very popular. It's 18km return along trail 5 and great for the whole family, taking in views of Mt Cooroora and Mt Cooran.

Baxter Falls…. Love love love!! Please Rain These Falls are stunning and the walk to them is just beautiful, only 4kms return.

You can take a dip and its home to the only suspension bridge on the Sunshine Coast.

Kin Kin Loop - it never gets old, the scenery is just magic. Did this one just a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday starting at 8.30am we made it back in time to enjoy the markets enjoying a well-deserved juice.

Ewen Maddock Dam - one of my fav's as I can take my dog. I know it’s a bit of a drive to get there but well worth it.

The picnic area alone is a great spot to take the kids and enjoy a short or longer walk. Highly recommend this one for the families.

Maroochy Regional Bushland Gardens - if you have family visiting this Christmas, this is a must do. 82 hectares of Australia wrapped up just for you. Don’t forget your picnic lunch and camera. From sculptures, amazing art and bushland walks it's an amazing day out.

Half way through the year already.

June I encountered The Bloody Long Walk, a 35km walk from Coolum to Mooloolaba, raising money for mitochondrial disease. We may have lost a couple of toenails, but are very much looking forward to next year.

Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary is such a quaint little place nestled in the back of Bli Bli. Although beautiful, I recommended

visiting in the cooler months to avoid the mosquitoes. It is also a part of the poetry trail and the strawberry farm across the road is open from June to October.

Baroon Pocket Dam to Kondalilla - once again we need the rain to fully enjoy this pristine part of the Sunshine Coast. I am still happy to walk this trial and actually did it back in June as I enjoy all the aspects of nature. It is very popular over the holidays, but the tourists love running into locals so don’t let this put you off.

The Great Noosa Trail Walk - I absolutely loved this experience. Honestly if you have thought about it - do it!!

It’s no walk in the park but it gives you the confidence with likeminded friends to enjoy hiking and camping and showcases the Noosa Trail network. Best three days ever!!

And lastly Buderim Falls - I must say what a special day exploring this lovely park

New web app to make recycling simpler NOOSA Council is making it easier for residents to recycle and reduce the waste they send to landfill with the help of a new web-based app.

Locals can simply tell the website what items they’d like to recycle or no longer need, to find a list of Noosa-specific options to either recycle the item or donate it for repair and reuse.

Council partnered with Recycle Mate, an initiative of the Australian Recycling Industry, in an Australian-first project to create the custom web-based program especially for Noosa locals.

TWO new energy efficiency toolkits are available to loan, free, from Noosa Libraries to help residents cut their power bills and reduce their emissions.

Residents can also borrow a portable induction hotplate to test out the new cooking technology.

Each energy efficiency kit includes a plug-in energy monitor to reveal how much power an appliance uses, as well as the cost of running it over a year.

“These kits help residents make informed decisions to make their homes more efficient, reduce emissions and ultimately save them money,” Noosa

Council’s Carbon Reduction Project Officer Annie Nolan said.

Other items in the kit include tools for measuring the flow rate of taps and showers, and a thermal camera for identifying hot and cold spots around the home.

Cooroy Residents Ally and Garry said the kits were really easy to use.

“I was able to measure how much power my TV uses just in standby,” Garry said.

“By using the thermal camera, I was able to identify a number of hotspots which are making my air-conditioning work harder and cost more.

“I have identified a number of areas to reduce my electricity and save costs."

Keen chef Ally said using the portable induction kit was great.

“It came with a magnet so I could see if my pots were made of a magnetic material and hence compatible with the induction stove. The stove itself was terrific - heated up really fast. My next stove will definitely be an electric induction cooktop,” she said.

Ms. Nolan said Council was loaning out the cooktops to encourage residents to consider high efficiency induction technology when upgrading older stoves.

The kits and cooktops are available for seven-day loan from Noosaville and Cooroy Libraries. A free library membership is all that is needed to borrow the items.

NOOSA Council’s upgrade of the Cooroora Trail (Trail 5) on the Noosa Biosphere Trails has won an Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Qld Excellence Award. This scenic Noosa Biosphere Trail links Pomona to Cooran via an easy 9km one-way journey through the beautiful Tuchekoi National Park.

The $1.68 million upgrade was possible thanks to funding from the Australian and Queensland governments’ Local Economic Recovery Program. Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation funded the initial Noosa Trail Masterplan, developed by Tourism Noosa who worked in partnership with Noosa Council on the trails project over several years.

Woodford for lunch CROSS country rides can be a lot of fun, especially if you go with a group with similar fitness and expectations.

This is one that we do at least once a year. It generally takes us around 6–8 hours with a lunch break at a Woodford Café. Navigation using a GPS with a route loaded will make it fairly straight forward, but be prepared for a long day out as things can, and often don’t, go to plan so have a backup plan for mechanical and medical issues. The distance of the route I use is approx 75km with 1000m of elevation.

We start out at the Glasshouse tourist information centre and ride south along the Steve Irwin Way bike path till the rail underpass. Be sure to take in magnificent views of the east face of Mt Tibrogargon.

Crossing under the railway we start to head west, passing through the Tibrogargon day use area, including toilets if needed.

From here its rough & windy fire roads with lots of intersections to navigate until we pop out onto the Glasshouse Woodford road that takes us up to the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout/Day use area and time for a short break to take in the magnificent views and read about some of its history.

Back on the bikes a little refreshed ready for a short ride to one of the highlights of this ride - the Hennessy Hill Down Hill MTB trail. This is one that is not to be taken lightly as it is graded black diamond and has been known to bite, so take care as there are many gap jumps and tricky rock gardens.

Most of the trail can be rolled judiciously using “B” lines without leaving the ground.

- if done at speed the air time can be significant. Note that if you are here on a weekend you may have riders doing very fast laps of this trail so beware.

With big smiles and Hennessy Hill behind us it’s back onto fire roads that are often shared by four wheel drives and dirt bikes. We usually do this ride mid-week to avoid most of this traffic and noise. There are some big bog holes and a creek crossing

or two to contend with, which makes it a good idea to do this ride during a dry period. Its also quite exposed a lot of the way so cooler temps are best. Eventually we pop out of the trails onto George St headed to downtown Woodford.

Woodford has lots to offer in the café arena during the week, including a pub.

After coffee and a good feed we head north down the main street past the The Braison Hussy, our favorite café that unfortunately became a victim of COVID past a small skate park/BMX track (a quick detour for some of us), over a bridge and then into Leichhardt St headed back east.

The ride back has a fair bit of old school

single trail so be sure to save some energy.

One section called the Rattle Snake is a 5-6km undulating windy single trail created my moto riders that will keep you guessing as to where the trail goes and which is the best line to take. Views of Beerwah signal we are getting close to the finish line, but not before a frantic & fun descent that’s brings us out just to the north of Mt Coonowrin. From here it's bitumen with more great views of the mountains all the way back to the car.

TWO ambitious Year 6 students Ari Waters and Thomas Dixon from Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC), have emerged as National Champions, conquering the Regional, State, and National Finals in the high-octane world of Esports.

Their remarkable journey culminated in a triumphant win at the National Finals, solidifying their reputation as the rising stars of competitive gaming.

The National Finals held on the Gold Coast last week, saw Ari and Thomas face off against fierce competitors in epic clashes of strategy and precision. The State

championship matches were incredibly close, with both teams demonstrating outstanding offense and defence. Their dedication, teamwork, and skill were nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Mr. Rossow, the Esports Coordinator at Good Shepherd, expressed his pride in the achievements of Ari and Thomas.

GSLC takes great pride in its Esports program, which includes both a social club and competitive teams. The Esports social club at GSLC serves as a welcoming space for like-minded students to connect and bond over their shared passion for Esports.

Luke 'Mad Dog' Martin looking to finish the year off with a bang!

IT’S been a massive year for the Impact crew.The team have competed all over Australia and travelled abroad on several occasions (to Samoa, New Zealand and USA to name a few). With the amatuer boxing team now finished for the year we have one big fight left on our calendar.

Professional boxer Luke, 'Mad Dog', Martin will be looking to finish the year with a bang when he takes on Orion Brown on December 20 at the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane.

These two have fought 7 times in the amatuer ranks previously with the score being 4-3 Orions way. Luke will be looking to settle the score as they meet for the first time as professionals.

“This will be Luke’s first fight back after

his bicep injury. He snapped the bicep off the bone in his last fight in May. He has since had surgery to reattach the bicep.

All seems to be holding up OK so we are confident that it will be fine.

He is as tough as nails this kid and always gives 100% in there. These two are no strangers in the ring so I am tipping there will be fireworks from the opening bell. Our preparation for this fight has been good and with 3 weeks left before we fight I believe Luke will be in the best shape of his career.” Coach Mark Evans said.

L L E W O ’ B R I E N Federal Member for Wide Bay OVER the last 30 years, more than 44,000 lives have been lost on Australian roads, and hundreds of thousands more have sustained serious and life changing injuries.

Road safety should be a priority for all levels of government however, the Albanese Labor government has just announced a 30 percent cut in its share of road infrastructure funding.

The Queensland government has also dropped the ball on road safety. Earlier this year I made a Right to Information request to obtain the secret data from the Queensland Labor government on the state of Queensland’s road network.

Queensland’s roads are rated under the AUSRAP system, where sections of roads are rated 1 to 5 stars, with 1 star being the most dangerous and 5 stars being the safest.

Roads with design elements like dual lane divided carriageways and wide lanes with good markings have a higher star rating.

Unsurprisingly for those who drive on them, 50 percent of roads in Wide Bay have a rating of just 2 stars, and 14 percent have a rating of 1. Only 0.3 of a percent of Wide Bay’s roads merit a rating of 5.

The long awaited results of the Albanese Labor government’s 90 Day Infrastructure Review (which actually blew out to more than 200 days), have given no comfort and no confidence for Queenslanders,

particularly around road safety. Major projects for Wide Bay like the Tiaro bypass are still listed as to be completed but are left in limbo with no clear answer on when the project will start and finish, or whether the scope of the project will be changed from four lanes to two.

Funding for the bypass was secured by the Coalition government in 2021 with construction expected to start in early 2023 for a completion date of late 2024, but the State and Federal Labor governments’ disinterest in the project jeopardises its delivery. Meanwhile, lives are at risk on this dangerous section of the Bruce Highway.

More than 11,000 vehicles use the highway between Gympie and Maryborough every day, and these numbers skyrocket during school holidays.

There have been six fatalities on this section of the highway in 2023, and yet there are no plans by either the State or Federal governments’ to extend the four lanes beyond Curra. We need projects to upgrade the Bruce Highway prioritised and fast tracked.

S A N D Y B O LT O N State Member for Noosa TO begin, even though we have not done the official opening of Six Mile Bridge #7 yet, given the long journey, I wanted to share with you that I took my first drive over this much fought for replacement as one lane is now open.

Once we get to the ‘official’ bit we will be popping some bubbles and hope you will join in!

Further on infrastructure, my ongoing efforts for better connectivity for Noosa residents have included seeking a trial train shuttle from Gympie North to Nambour in order to connect with the timetable there, and bus services that address gaps to access work and medical services. Funding has now been secured for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to open consultation on a Northern Sunshine Coast Transport Strategy following advocacy from several key groups and our office.

In addition, there is a consultation on the planned Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line which happily was not cut in the Federal government's review, which TMR have also stated could connect to the existing North Coast Line, north of Beerwah Station.

On community, one of our grant recipients from earlier this year was the newly established Cooran Organic Garden.

Healthy food grown together is key to sustainability and connectiveness, with these gardens providing a nourishing space to share concerns, tips, skills and beautiful produce! It was wonderful to attend their Page 56 | Your Local Lifestyle December 2023

inaugural AGM and support this project.

Thankfully we received some muchneeded rain this month, however, even though the Fire Ban has been lifted, please remain vigilant and do not take any risks, as it is often one minor decision or action, that can lead to the devastation of a community. These intersections have been a focal point of community interest and concern due to the increasing traffic congestion, safety issues, and the potential impact on the overall wellbeing of the community.

This petition isn’t just about highlighting the issues these intersections present; it’s about advocating for the community’s right to be involved in the decision-making processes that affect their daily lives.
