GourMay Mary Valley Food Festival CELEBRATING

QUEENSLAND’S Mary Valley is preparing for a bumper month of food events with the announcement of the program for their annual GourMay Mary Valley Food Festival.

This verdant region, sitting amongst rolling hills, just 45 minutes inland from Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, is today one of Australia’s great food bowls. Once upon a time, the Mary Valley was ‘pineapple and green bean’ central, along with a thriving dairy industry, but now it is home to organic beef, macadamia plantations, avocado, persimmon, edible bamboo, pumpkin, goat cheese, leafy greens and edible native plants, along with traditional pineapples, beans and dairy.

GourMay Mary Valley is a month-long celebration of the people who create, grow, and harvest fine produce. The Festival officially commences on Wednesday, May 1 with an Opening Ceremony held at Honeybee Wellness Retreat, featuring the Mary Valley Variety Show.

The following weeks will be filled with feature dinners, produce demonstrations, workshops, and competitions, including:

• WINE LAUNCH: WindRush Estate will partner with Kandanga Farm Store to launch the vintage 2023 Tempranillo

• WINE LUNCHES: Dingo Creek will host Vintners Lunch

• FOOD FESTIVAL: Kenilworth Family Fun Day including the Great Mary Valley Camper Damper. Plus a Children’s fruit and vegetable sculpture competition.

• CAMPFIRE DINING/MUSIC: ‘Bellbird and back...a taste of the trail’ involves a gentle half-hour stroll along the Mary Valley Rail Trail to a bellbird habitat where a campfire dinner with local foods and music await.

• CAMPFIRE COOKING: Show off your Camp Oven cooking skills at our inaugural Mary Valley Camp Oven Competition

• HERITAGE RAILWAY: The Mary Valley Rattler will operate its Tasting Train and Picnic Train throughout May. The Silver Bullet will team up with Creative Tours on a scenic journey through the valley stopping at local farms for a Taste of the Mary Valley.

• WILD MACADAMIAS: Learn the story of the macadamia nut. Its origins are in the Mary Valley, and the Macadamia Conservation Trust will take you on a walk through the home of the macadamia.

• LONG LUNCH: Savour the flavours of bushfood with Peter Wolfe at Kandanga Farm Store or the ethically grown produce at Woollahra Homestead. In addition, there will be film nights

based around food themes, a photographic competition, and Kenilworth ArtsFest.

Imbil will once again host Festival Day on Saturday May 25, with Sunshine Coast Foodie, Martin Duncan as MC. The day will include cooking demonstrations, market stalls and bushfood expert Peter Wolf will share some tips on how to get the best from native ingredients.

The highlight of Festival Day will be once again the Great Mary Valley Cooking Challenge pitting four locals in a Mystery Box/Ready Steady Cook challenge. The winning creation will be crowned GourMay Mary Valley ‘Dish of the Year’ and its creator ‘GourMay Mary Valley Cook of the Year 2024’.

GourMay Mary Valley Food Festival 2024 will end with a spectacular Gala dinner. The menu will showcase the diversity of produce that is grown and produced locally, with entertainment including a live band, DJ, and a special ‘surprise’ performance from Internationally acclaimed entertainers.

For full program and booking details:

https://www.gourmaymaryvalley.com.au/ The Mary Valley GourMay Festival is being made possible through the support of the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce, Gympie Council, Queensland Hydro, Vintitech, Headstart Electrical and many other local operators. They have partnered with Slow Food Noosa whose ethos of ‘Good, Clean and Fair’ matches the valley’s commitment to quality and environmentally responsible.

THANKS FROM FRANK

WITH the polls yet to be declared, I’m thankful to the community for such solid support.

The community in their wisdom have elected a great new mix of candidates. I congratulate and dedicate myself to working well with them.

Campaigns can be brutal. In the age of social media, especially more so. Regardless of the results, I’ve only respect for each and every candidate who nominates and runs in the hope of being the positive change they want to see in their community. It’s important to remember that they and their families are human.

Initially, the focus will be on helping settle in the new team so we can be making decisions in the best long-term interests of the community as quickly as possible.

Apart from keeping rates as low as possible and ensuring the council is

set up to deliver quality services and facilities across the shire, residents are also wanting actions to address the impacts of tourism, traffic congestion, short term accommodation, housing and the need for better environmental protections.

All campaigns are different. This time, there’s been new participants, like the My Place sovereign citizens and boating and fishing groups. While candidates are governed by strict rules requiring truthful statements on approved How

To Vote Cards as part of the process managed by the ECQ, other groups are not. All views are part of the bigger picture and a review to make the electoral process fairer and more inclusive is likely.

I am proud of my team who were committed to running a positive, factual and issues-focused campaign.

is the new name for a familiar face in Cooroy. Local lawyers Cooroy Legal Centre and McCarthy Family Law in Noosaville amalgamated in July last year and are now celebrating their successful marriage with a new name.

Principal lawyer Ms Jane McCarthy said the new name was chosen to celebrate the firm’s wide experience in all types of family law matters.

“We will continue to offer sensible advice in all parenting, property, domestic violence and child protection disputes,”Ms McCarthy said.

“Collectively our lawyers have more than 70 years’ experience between them in helping families to negotiate new arrangements after separation.”

Ms McCarthy said both offices in Cooroy and Noosaville would also continue to help people with their wills, powers of attorney, and winding up deceased estates. Cooroy Legal Centre Conveyancing remains a strength for the new practice.

“Shelley, our very popular conveyancer, is still with us to provide knowledgeable and friendly help for people who are buying or selling property in Noosa and the hinterland,” Ms McCarthy said.

Noosa & Hinterland Family Lawyers will operate from their Noosaville office to service the Noosa community, while the Cooroy office will service those in the hinterland. Video and phone appointments, including free initial consultations, are available for clients who are unable to attend either office easily.

More information about Noosa & Hinterland Family Lawyers can be found at the firm’s webpage www. noosahinterlandfamilylawyers.com.au. Both offices can be reached by phoning 5408 4399.

Bearded Dragon with Tony Wellington

THE spines on the Bearded Dragon’s chin give the reptile its common name.

Those spines may look threatening, but they are quite soft to the touch. There are eight species of Bearded Dragon. Our local version is the Eastern Bearded Dragon.

There are a couple of recent discoveries worth mentioning in relation to these docile reptiles. For a very long time, it was assumed that all Australian lizards were non-venomous. Indeed, just a few decades ago, it was generally thought that the only venomous lizards in the world were the Gila Monster and the Mexican Beaded Lizard of the Americas. But research this century has revealed that many of our Australian lizards have weak venom in their saliva.

Researchers have identified two venom glands in the Eastern Bearded Dragon, one in the upper jaw and one in the lower jaw. Although a bite from a Bearded Dragon is very rare, if it occurs, it may just cause localised swelling. There are no long-term serious health impacts from a dragon bite.

The other interesting discovery is that their genetic makeup doesn’t always dictate their sex. Humans tend to think of sex roles in binary terms. But for many animals, and indeed some humans, things are not so black-and-white. Male Bearded Dragons possess two Z chromosomes and females have a ZW chromosome arrangement. (This is the opposite of humans, where the ‘default’ sex is females with XX chromosomes: that’s why men have nipples.) But high temperatures can override the chromosomes in developing Bearded Dragons.

When Bearded Dragon eggs are incubated below 32 degrees, the sex chromosomes dictate the sex of individuals. But when the temperature is above 32 degrees, more of the animals become female regardless of their chromosomal make-up. Indeed, at temperatures of 36 degrees or more, 100% of lizards born are females, including those whose genes would suggest they are males. This may have implications for such animals in response to rapid climate change. MEET OUR TEAM OF DOCTORS: Dr

Brothers in Arms

JOHN AND WILLIAM ‘WILLIE’ LAMB, OF FETTES ROW, EDINBURGH, WERE TWINS, BORN 20 MINUTES APART, WHO BOTH JOINED THE ROYAL SCOTS.

THEY WERE SENT WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE TO CAPE HELLES, GALLIPOLI, IN APRIL 1915, SOUTH OF WHERE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND TROOPS LANDED AT ANZAC COVE THE SAME DAY.

THE following includes excerpts from letters from that time, to their family and brother Tommy and sister, Euphemia (Effie), who kept and later had them typed for posterity.

MARCH 1915

Pte. J. Lamb, D Coy, 1/5 Royal Scots, Leamington, England.

My dearest Mother,

You will be thinking that I am not a very good son to you for not writing, but really we have been so very busy that I haven’t had a minute to write to a single person …

Now mother, how is Fettes Row getting on?

All O.K. I hope. You will all be very busy with [Tommy’s] marriage arrangements. I do hope we will be able to get there.

With all our love, “JOHN”.

Leamington

Tuesday, 16/3/15.

Dear Tommy,

Thanks so very much for the really delightful letters that you have sent to us.

What did you think of the latest bit of news (the Dresden). Isn’t it fine; good for the “Glasgow”; she has fairly had her revenge. You should really see this place. You simply

can’t get moving for all [the soldiers]. All the Artillery went off to-day (dest unknown) and you should see their guns.

Part of our division is away, but we don’t know when we will go. I am afraid, however, that it won’t be very long. We were out “trying” our new rifles, and they are simply splendid.

With best love from “JOHN”.

P.S. You might ask the Mater to send down flannel undershirts – Express Parcel Post.

S.S. COLUMBIA, Transport, Avonmouth.

SUNDAY

Dearest Mother.

Well, we sail tonight on this fine boat to the Mediterranean. The Worcester and Essex regiments are also on board and we are packed like herring in a barrel.

Your Loving son, “Willie”.

Pte. W. Lamb, Z Coy, 1st 5th Royal Scots, 88th Brigade, 29th Division, British Expeditionary Force.

Thursday, 25th March, 1915.

Dear All at Fettes Row,

This is going to be a very difficult letter to write because I can’t really tell what I should put in and what I shouldn’t. However I will leave that to the censor to judge.

Yesterday on board, we heard rumours that the United States had sent an ultimatum to

Germany, also that Premszyl (don’t laugh at spelling) had fallen. Is that true?

Plenty roughing it here; sleeping on the fore-castle at nights, just where one gets the heave; about 200 of us all shoved in there at nights. You can tell Effie that her chocolate is still intact.

Well, I know where we shall probably land, but I am sorry I cannot tell you, but we shall probably not get off the boat. “Willie”. X X

APRIL 1915

Pte. W. Lamb

2/4/15: Good Friday.

This morning I woke to find myself in Alexandria harbour. What a size it is! French, Indian and Australian troops are all here, also a … (censored).

We have now all got our pith helmets, and we had to get regulars to roll our puggarees on.

We have had no news of how the war is getting on although an Egyptian paper says that the Allies have broken through the German right. Oh for the sight of the [Edinburgh] Dispatch! I am also dying to hear about the wedding. With love to all, “WILLIE”.

6th April, 1915.

Dear Tommy,

I suppose the work will come along some time, but so far we have not seen active service.

The sand here is the blooming limit. Gets into the rife, the bayonet, equipment, ears, eyes, nose and hair.

You can tell the Mater she should come here for her Monday’s washing. It would dry all O.K. “WILLIE”.

Pte. J Lamb

6 April, 1915.

My dear Mother,

This is just a short note to let you now that Willie and I are all O.K.

There is practically nothing I can tell you about. We are not allowed into the town [Alexandria], so far, and some places are out of bounds for all the troops.

Willie and I had a swim in the Medy. yesterday afternoon. It was tip-top and we were very sorry when we had to come out. Don’t you imagine that because we are away from you that we never think about the folks at home.

Your loving son, “JOHN”.

Mustapha Pascha Barracks, ALEXANDRIA

10/4/15.

Dear Father,

This will have to be a short note as I am going on guard soon.

There are only three platoons left here [now]. The remainder of us leave to-morrow for some part of Gallipoli as far as I know.

Now Father, I must stop and in order to post this will have to bunk out so cheer oh! I hope you get it.

With united love, JOHN & WILLIE

April 18th 1915.

Dear Tommy,

Don’t enlist yet. Two out of three is quite good going so you can wait a little yet.

Now there isn’t much news to give you. We are now among a great many islands but when we land and where I am blessed if I know.

The Mater asks us what we want. Well socks and cigarettes are our only want: so far. We are broke and don’t get any money, so please send some.

Yours aye, “WILLIE”.

MAY 1915

10th May, 1915. [Gallipoli]

Dear Mother,

This is just a little note to let you know that I am all right so far.

We have had an awful time of it, but luckily so far I have been untouched. I got the Pater’s letter yesterday, and oh! how it did cheer me up to get letters from home.

I have lost my pack containing greatcoat, towels, socks, in fact everything including Effie’s chocolate. I think that I thought more about the choc. than anything else.

We came back from the trenches this morning. First thing I did after getting some breakfast was to fall sound asleep. Then I had a bath in a shallow stream close by. It made me feel quite a different chap altogether.

Your loving son, “JOHN”

15th May, 1915. [Gallipoli]

Dear Mother,

By the time this reaches you, you will know all about the work that the 29th Division has done. We have fairly been in it, I can tell you, and at present we are in trenches down near our base resting.

We had eighteen days in the firing line (the battalion, I mean). I am afraid that this sort of business that is going on here will leave its mark on every one of us for the rest of his life. It makes one pause and think how any nation can possibly pay itself out for war and quietly prepare for it for so many years.

The first morning we were here, we got the nice job of burying some dead. It made the lot of us feel very queer “inside” at first, but I am afraid that it doesn’t affect us very much now. You might tell Effie, Maggie, Tommy etc. that they must excuse my not writing them. Paper and envelopes are so very scarce.

Now Mother ta-ta till the next time.

Your loving son, “JOHN”.

A Trench, Firing Line, [Gallipoli]

21st May, 1915.

Dearest Mother,

Just a few words to let you know that I am all O.K. Here am I sitting in a dug-out with a blanket stretched overhead to keep off the sun’s rays. It is awfully warm during the day, and the very reverse at night. It is wonderful how one gets into trench life. Fancy making a hole in the earth and living in it for days at a time. Since going up to the firing line I have been made observer to Captain Mure. At present it is a fairly safe job, but of course one

has always to run the risk of a stray bullet, or a sniper.

At present I am down at headquarters where I got my breakfast which consisted of some sort of paste on a slice of bread, two rashers of bacon, bread and jam and tea, with a little milk in it! Ye Gods, what a treat! Your loving son, “JOHN”

Pte J. Lamb, 27th May, 1915.

Reserve trenches. [Gallipoli]

My dear Father,

I received your last letter yesterday dated 2nd May. I cannot describe my feelings to you when I was reading it. By the time this reaches you, you will be able to understand what I mean. Perhaps you would imagine that something was wrong when you read my last letters. Willie at that time was missing.

Some of his fellows said that they had seen him running back holding his arm as if he had been wounded. I tried to find out definitely about him, but could not, and I simply had to pray and hope for the best.

However, on Friday, 21st May, my Captain came to me and said that he had sad news to give me. He then handed me poor Willie’s letters and pocket book. I don’t know what I said to him because I was too shocked to know what I was doing.

He was killed instantly, shot through the head. From what the fellows said who found him, it appears that he was advancing through scrub right on to a dug-out containing fourteen Turks. The fellow said he saw the dug-out containing the dead enemies. This advance took place on the 8th of May and we were relieved on the 10th.

I myself advanced with Willie for the first part of it, but when we went forward again I lost sight of him.

Well, Dad, he died a soldier’s death, with his face to the enemy. What could be a better or braver way of taking leave of this world? At present I can’t fully realise what has happened, and I don’t suppose I will fully do so until I reach home.

In your letter you ask if the battalion has been really into action. If you had asked,

have we ever been out of it, it would have appealed to me more. We have been fighting for thirty days now, and out of the thirty we have been five and a half in the rest trenches. All the Heriot boys expressed their sympathy for me and for you all at 14 Fettes Row. That last little bit, 14 Fettes Row, is what troubles me just now.

If only I could be at home just now I would make this sad business much easier for you all to bear. The thought of the dear Mater and yourself losing such a good son is truly a terrible one. Mother, always remember that he died fighting for his country, his home and he died fighting for his father and mother. Now father please excuse more just now. From your loving son “JOHN”

Little Seed Big dreams

AND SUCCESSFULLY

THE often quoted phrase from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, ‘Be not afraid of greatness’, could double as Johanna’s motto as she inspires her young company to find their greatness within.

Twelfth Night is just one of Johanna’s many favourite works of Shakespeare.

“Every time I am working on something that becomes my favourite”, she says smiling.

“I like the comedies. The romantic comedies are fun and they are so silly. Because he was an amazing writer and also a bit of a silly writer. Someone said to me they are like the original Married At First Sight, because of the amount of times a Shakespearian couple get married basically after looking at each other for three seconds! So its wrapped in all this beautiful language and we think he’s so cultured but really it’s a soap opera! He was for the people.”

Allow me to introduce Johanna and Richard Wallace, the talented couple behind Little Seed Theatre Company. Married, with two daughters, the youth theatre company has also been their baby for the past 15 years. Their passion has been the driving force of the local youth theatre company now widely recognised for its high quality productions, drawing audiences from all over the Sunshine Coast and bringing Shakespeare to the people.

“I started what became Little Seed by

taking over a handful of students in some classes at Noosa Arts Theatre,” Jo explains.

“It did start as just me, but because we are such a good partnership, Rich was there from the beginning.”

Johanna was one of those children born to the stage, producing and directing from a young age.

“When I was growing up I was always interested in stories. I was always making people do things as a child and then charging all the parents 20 cents to come and watch a show with every kid in the neighbourhood in it and probably some teddy bears,” she laughs.

“I had this weird thing as a child, thinking I would like to go into movies and also run an orphanage,” she smiles at the memory.

and are now looking at providing paid opportunities for school graduates. For Rich and Johanna, combining their love for social enterprise, teaching and performing arts has been a recipe for success and a rewarding journey but as a young couple they sought adventure and a road less travelled.

Who would have thought that a perpetually evolving cohort of young actors would ... be annually performing quality Shakespearian performances in Cooroy.

“And so sometimes I think it’s really funny that I have ended up with this quite reasonable sized theatre company for young people. It’s not exactly an orphanage but it is a gathering of souls that are likeminded.”

Little Seed currently has around 230 students, aged from Prep to Year 12. They work with a team of about nine creatives who all contribute to the theatre company

“I was only 15 when I met Richard. So we became friends and then fell in love. He’s three years older. We met through a friend who had a bonfire at their place one night and we became really good friends and then the summer that I left school I just remember looking at him and thinking, ‘oh that’s a different feeling, my heart is all fluttery’.”

Two years later (when Jo was 20 years old) they got married and have been married for 26 years. In 2001 they left the Noosa area and moved to Sydney for Johanna to study acting. She tried breaking into movies but the lack of creativity and opportunities left her uninspired. Instead, she worked in theatre on the northern beaches.

“We kind of set aside any extra responsibilities for the next ten years. We didn’t rush into getting a home or starting a family, we did a lot of travelling. From

Sydney we went to Hong Kong for two years and Richard worked in a local school as an English teacher. I came in right on the ground floor of a company that became Dramatic English and we used drama to teach english. I went right across the country of Hong Kong and loved it.”

During this time, Jo had a mentor who saw her potential as a gifted teacher of drama, though her aspiration as an actor pushed her to resist.

“He said to me, ‘I think that you were born to do this. I have a feeling you are going to fall in love with it’. He was right. I really fell in love with it,” she recalls.

Richard’s teaching background and curriculum experience has shaped the administration of Little Seed while Johanna makes the creative decisions. It’s a well balanced partnership. They are both passionate about young people and Rich is Little Seed’s biggest advocate.

“As an educator for many years, and always on the periphery of Little Seed performances, I have come to know that if there is expectation and opportunity young people will utilise their energy to rise, to do things beyond what society expects of them. They have an innocence, where they have not yet learnt that they can’t. In this, I believe they bring us hope, as well as a wonderfully entertaining performance,” he says.

Little Seed’s annual Shakespeare performance in the Botanic Gardens amphitheatre has become a sell-out calendar event with a cult-like following.

Page 16 | Your Local Lifestyle April 2024 COMMUNITY
JOHANNA WALLACE HAS TWO PASSIONS, THE PERFORMING ARTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE. AS FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF LITTLE SEED THEATRE COMPANY SHE MERGES THEM BEAUTIFULLY

This year is the eighth year of Shakespeare at the Lake. The audience returns faithfully each year, many drawn from outside the company and the area, attracted by the talent and commitment of the young cast. Richard is immensely proud of the young actors.

“Who would have thought that a perpetually evolving cohort of young actors would, with infectious intellect and passion, be annually performing quality Shakespearian performances in Cooroy. This is an event, a cast that the people of Noosa should be proud of, an event that defies expectations, an event that you need to experience to believe. Then actually meet the cast after the show to realise they are all still at school!”

got all the scaffolding there to get to the end, you feel great when it is done.”

possible for them.”

That faith is shared by Johanna. She believes there are many misconceptions about today’s young people and they are more capable than we think. About performing Shakespeare she says, “It’s not easy. It’s ok to do something hard. It feels to me like we are busy removing a lot of hard things from the generations coming through and I don’t think that’s doing them a favour because my experience is that they love hard things. They don’t love every second of something that’s hard, but if you can do something that’s hard and you’ve

During the Easter school holidays Alice in Wonderland will play at the Botanic Gardens and a month later Shakespeare at the Lake returns, this year with Hamlet Johanna has started a Shakespeare program for students from year three to six, believing it is never too early to introduce them to the work.

Snappy Shakespeare will deliver sets of 10 minute shows to the audience, giving the young ones a taste of the company’s culture and direction.

“They are learning from a really young age. It goes better than you would think! What has surprised me is that children and young people like a challenge and they seem to glow with the fact that an adult feels that something that is really difficult is

This year’s program is looking impressive. Johanna, Richard and their team of creatives have a busy schedule ahead. Jo outlines, “Wizard of Oz in the June July school holidays. That’s our primary musical at The Noosa J. Then Mary Poppins in September school holidays which is our senior musical, followed by Fantastic Mr Fox and Robin Hood. Plus a really exciting project to run at the end of the year which is an opportunity for our senior class to work with a professional writer and develop a new piece of work. It will be our first time as a company exploring on an extended level, a new piece of work.”

For Jo and Rich, they truly want to inspire their students to see the greatness in themselves. Says Jo, “Finding a place

like Little Seed, that is your space, where people believe in you, we know that we are building a healthy community. The thing is when you have been doing something for a long time it’s easy to forget how far you have come and also what people are doing now. Two of my first students are now mothers which is really special but I can’t wait for the first former students children to walk through the door. I don’t think it’s going to be that long. What I love more than anything else, and what Little Seed represents to me now, is a local community of creatives.”

I took the opportunity to ride my motorbike to Canberra for the first fortnight of the Autumn sitting of Parliament.

The House of Representatives is considering several of pieces of legislation, and the Albanese Government’s Fresh Food Tax has to be one of the worst propositions brought before the House in this session.

The three Bills relate to Agriculture (Biosecurity Protection) Levies and Charges, and unbelievably, will make Australian farmers, fishers, and graziers pay for the biosecurity risks posed by their international competitors.

This tax will drive the cost of Australian produce up, thereby making imports more attractive to consumers, so it’s a tax on Australian competition, making Australian produce less competitive.

Higher costs of doing business means higher costs to consumers. In the middle of this cost of living crisis, the Labor Government is introducing new taxes that will drive up the price of home grown food and produce, making it even harder for the many Australians who are already struggling to make ends meet.

Anyone who has seen the television show Border Security knows that people try to bring in all manner of things that risk spreading exotic pests and diseases.

The Liberal and Nationals Coalition recognises the absolute necessity of

maintaining strong border biosecurity measures to protect our flora, fauna, and agricultural industries from introduced threats.

But the importance of having a strong biosecurity system is not the priority of these Albanese Government Bills – it’s all about raising taxes.

The Bills do not contain any framework on how Labor’s Fresh Food Tax will be administered, or how the funds raised will be used. Essentially, they are an open ended proposition with the proceeds going into general revenue.

The levies squeezed from our farmers are not even guaranteed to end up funding biosecurity measures. We don’t know where the money will go and what it will be used for.

The Coalition will not support these Bills. In his 2023 Budget Reply speech, the Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton announced that instead of imposing Labor’s Fresh Food Tax on our farmers, a Dutton Coalition Government would introduce an Importer Container Levy.

This is in line with recommendations from the independent Craik Biosecurity Review, which investigated ways to sustainably minimise risks to our unique biodiversity and our vital agricultural sector.

The cost of eliminating imported biosecurity threats should be paid for by importers. Not by Australian farmers.

Youth festival in Pomona YOUR NOOSA

The vibrant talents of local young musicians will be showcased at Noosa Council’s upcoming Thrive Youth Festival. As part of Queensland Youth Week, the festival is to take place at Pomona and District Community House on Thursday, April 11, from 9am to 5pm, promising a day filled with music, talent, and community spirit.

Willem Brennan, singer, guitarist, and keyboard player for ‘Mum Says No’, expressed the band’s eagerness to share the stage with fellow local artists.

“It’s a really good opportunity for the community to hear what the local young musicians are currently playing,” Brennan added.

Josiah Tharps, Council’s Community Programs Officer, said the festival provided an important platform for youth expression. “This is a great chance to give our young people space and stage to share their talents,” he said.

With an array of activities ranging from music and food to workshops and a range of wellness sessions, the festival offers an exciting celebration of youth creativity and community spirit.

Young tech leaders help Noosa develop digital skills

Noosa Libraries and the Peregian Digital Hub have launched a Digital Leaders Program, helping equip community members with essential digital skills.

This free initiative brings emerging leaders in tech, who have come through the Hub’s cadetship program, into the Cooroy and Noosaville libraries to share their knowledge with the community.

Through free hands-on workshops, tutorials and one-on-one coaching sessions, participants will gain practical experience and confidence in navigating

an increasingly digital society.

Library Programs Lead Tamara Crew said the young digital leaders offer a supportive learning environment where individuals gain essential skills to keep up with evolving technologies.

“In the first phase, people can drop in for free Tech Help sessions. They

can bring their device for one-on-one support to learn how to maximise their potential and troubleshoot issues,” Ms Crew said.

“Soon the Digital Leaders will deliver a range of talks where people can learn more about AI, and ChatGPT, as well as workshops on using 3D printers, laser cutters and more.”

Peregian Digital Hub’s Director Chris Boden said that for many people the pace of digital change can be overwhelming so it’s fantastic to see these young techs sharing their knowledge in service of the community. Visit the Noosa Libraries website for more information – libraries.noosa.qld. gov.au

Repairs to flood-damaged hinterland roads under way

Reconstruction of flood-damage roads hit top gear in the hinterland this month, with repairs underway at 10 separate locations.

The rain event in early 2022, exacerbated by recent wet weather, caused excessive further damage to two of the five sites along Black Pinch Road. Reconstruction work continues to be completed in stages.

Acting Infrastructure Services

Director, Shaun Walsh, said closures and disruptions are inevitable.

“We work with the impacted residents and try to minimise the impacts as much as we can,” he said.

Due to constrained working areas, full road closures with detours are in place on a section of Cooroy-Belli Creek Road, Cootharaba Road and Happy Jack Road at Ridgewood.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work our way through the flooddamage work,” Mr Walsh said.

Five landslips have already been repaired at a cost of $2.3 million.

“We’ve also completed 14 sites with stormwater and culvert damage at a cost of $5.5 million,” Mr Walsh said.

Mr Walsh said a further $41 million in road repairs are underway.

“Our contractors are about to start significant reconstruction work at Musa Vale Road and the cooperation of residents there has really helped get a good outcome for those who will be impacted during the work,” he said.

Flood recovery work is jointly funded by the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Healthy growth in swimming classes

Latest data shows a significant jump in bookings for swimming lessons at Noosa Aquatic Centre.

In the six months to December 2023, there was a 12 per cent growth in Learn to Swim numbers.

Aquatics coordinator Tim Wilson is thrilled with the positive result.

“Our talented, committed instructors at the NAC do a great job in quickly getting the youngsters competent and comfortable around water,” Mr Wilson said.

The latest Royal Surf Lifesaving Drowning Report for the summer period shows 99 people drowned in

Australian waterways from December 2023 to February 2024.

Twenty-two people died in Queensland during that three-month period.

“Any drowning is tragic, so the more we can promote safety advice the better,” he said.

“Our classes start for children as young as six months,” Mr Wilson said.

The free NAC Baby Splash program continues to be a very popular program for babies 3 to 6 months.

The NAC Squad program also recorded a 33 per cent jump in membership in the last 12 months.

In Brief

Holiday fun for the kids

School holidays are here again and there are plenty of activities on offer at Council’s facilities to keep the kids entertained.

At the Cooroy Library they can get to create their own Popsicle Pal at the Cookies and Canvas event or have fun playing a variety of board games at the Games event.

Head into the Noosa Regional Gallery in Tewantin for a range of hands-on workshops, or they can hone their basketball skills at the Noosa Leisure Centre.

There’s also inflatable fun every day at the Noosa Aquatic Centre. Visit Council’s website to see all the activities on offer – noosa.qld.gov.au

A boost to pathway links in the hinterland

Starting soon, renewal efforts will enhance pathways in Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, and Kin Kin, aligning with Council’s focus on improved connectivity, safety, and accessibility.

Shaun Walsh, Acting Infrastructure Services Director, said the improvements will strengthen footpath links in the hinterland.

“Through consultation, such as the Pomona Place Plan, we’ve heeded the community’s call for enhanced pedestrian links. These renewals are the start in supporting our commitment to safer walking and cycling and better-connected neighbourhoods,” Mr Walsh said.

YOUR SEASONAL PRODUCE WATCH with Matt Golinski

BANANAS

UNLIKE most fruit which is seasonal, bananas are available all year round, and they’re such a dietary staple in most households of Australia that when they become scarce due to weather events panic sets in.

The banana plant is essentially a herb and it’s fruit is considered a berry.

There are two main types of bananas that come from two species of the same family – the ones like cavendish and lady fingers that we eat ripe as a sweet banana, and the plantain type which is generally cooked in its unripe form into savoury dishes like curries or fritters - its high starch content giving it an almost potato effect.

I prefer to use cavendish bananas for cakes and muffins, and the riper the better.

If you have more than you can eat fresh, they can be frozen and used later for baking or smoothies, or if you have a dehydrator they can be cut into slices and dried to eat as snacks.

Most bananas we buy ripe have been force ripened with gas, which is perfectly safe, but in my opinion they’re never as good as ones that have ripened naturally.

BANANA AND DARK CHOCOLATE MUFFINS

Ingredients:

450gm self-raising flour

225gm caster sugar

375ml milk

250ml vegetable oil

2 eggs

4 cavendish bananas, diced

100gm dark chocolate buttons

Makes 12 large muffins

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and sugar and make a well in the centre.

Whisk together the milk, vegetable oil and eggs, then slowly whisk into the flour and sugar mixture to form a smooth batter.

Gently fold in the banana and chocolate.

Cut out twelve circles of baking paper large enough to fit large muffin tray bases with a couple of centimetres extra at the top.

Divide the muffin mixture between each of the papers.

Bake for 30 minutes.

THE DAYS TOPPLED OVER – VIDYA MADABUSHI

MALLI has a small and quiet life. Although only 36, she lives in a retirement village in India. She has selective mutism and is unable to speak once she leaves the safe confines of her own apartment, instead she communicates using a whiteboard and coloured markers. The highlight of her week is the regular Sunday evening call from her brother Surya, who is studying in Australia and hoping to obtain his permanent residency.

Since the death of their parents Malli and Surya have a fraught relationship. Surya convinced Malli to let him use his inheritance to fund the trip to Australia, but now that he has arrived, the path to becoming a resident seems more out of reach than ever. He carefully plans his conversation with Malli ahead of time, hoping to keep things positive, and giving her only a small glimpse into his life.

Surya is working in an Indian restaurant and sharing filthy and cramped rooms above the restaurant with fellow migrants. Their situation is precarious and for Surya, the only shining light is the faint possibility of a date with a colleague.

When Surya fails to make his regular call to Malli, she begins to worry, eventually travelling to Australia with Nayan, the moderator of a missing persons website, who has offered to help. But how much does Malli actually know about Surya’s life in Australia, and how will she find Surya before it is too late?

The Days Toppled Over by Vidya Madabushi is a slow paced and deeply important book about the class and race systems that exist even in Australia, exploring the vulnerability of those seeking a better life, and the ruthlessness of some employers who are holding the power.

ARIA

NOOSA Arts Theatre is proud to announce a world premiere of David Williamson’s 56th play, Aria

Every year on the birthday of her three sons, who were all born on the same day, Monique gathers them together to mark the occasion. Her husband Kevin died years ago, but her three sons, who she idolizes, have more than filled the gap. Unfortunately for all the wives, Monique, highly strung and imperious, doesn’t hold the same high opinion of them.

At the crowning moment of the gathering she sings a famous Opera Aria to remind them that until she met and married Kevin, she was destined to become a Diva. Her gatherings have always been fraught in the past but this year is something else again. Local actress and well loved performer,

Jo Hendrie plays the lead, Monique, and shines as the diva holding onto a youthful ideal that she is more talented than she is. Frank Wilkie, Noosa Mayoral Candidate, plays one of her sons alongside locals Tom Middleton and Jackson O’Sullivan. Their wives are played by Sharon Grimley, Michelle Allen and Lauren Harvey. Hot FM’s Sam Coward is director.

This play is sure to entertain, both funny and poignant it is a must see!

Aged Beauty and Brushed Expressions exhibition is opening at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery on April 6. The exhibition combines the works of photographer, Jane Howie, and painter/ potter, Mandy Smith. The title reflects both their different, but complementary work.

‘Aged Beauty’ celebrates the world Jane finds with her camera in old foliage, pods and flowers. ‘Brushed Expressions’ refers to Mandy’s painted expressions, using her brushes and clay.

exhibitions will be on offer: Saren Dobkins presents Hiding in Plain Sight. This collection of 30 years of work brings together aspects of self-portraiture, in painterly vignettes that reflect facets of personal experience, and self-reflection. Any artist who attempts to capture their thoughts, emotions and perceptions will no doubt find themselves walking a fine line between vulnerability and integrity. These works invite others to share Saren’s moments of awareness and the desire for connection.

Upstairs, Helen Saint-Smith provides an element of fun with an eclectic collection of collage works on Canvas. These works are an extended world tour stretching from Antarctica to Portugal with many stops on the Sunshine Coast in between.

Lauren Manser is new to the coast and this will be her first solo exhibition after rediscovering her creative self since

working in the mining industry. Titled Emergence, it features beautiful images of the Tasmanian landscape.

The annual Hoofbeats exhibition is one of the CBFAC’s biggest and most joyful events of the year and as a major fundraising event, it is wholeheartedly supported by the community. The exhibition proceeds aid Hoofbeats’ equine therapy and trauma recovery programs. This year’s exhibition titled Seeing the Soul: The Human-Animal Connection presents artworks that depict the relationships and deep bonds that occur between animals and humans, reminding us of the importance of a kind and beneficial human-animal relationship. The mediums of photography, painting, drawing, and 3D are all represented. All exhibitions run from April 12 to May 12. Opening day is Saturday April 13.

GALLERY CLOSURE LEADS TO OPPORTUNITY IN IMBIL

THE forced closure of the highly popular fine art gallery in Imbil has prompted the managers to build their own arts hub in the Mary Valley town.

Construction of a Mary Valley arts and cultural hub encompassing the Art on Yabba Fine Art Gallery is soon to begin at the Imbil Heritage Railway Precinct in Imbil, subject to funding.

For Mary Valley Artslink, this project resolves the need to relocate the Art on Yabba Fine Art Gallery to a permanent venue, and also responds to the growth and needs of the arts and cultural sector in the Mary Valley.

President Heinke Butt said the need to relocate had opened the door of opportunity to build ‘bigger and better’ arts facilities in the valley.

“The project – at around $60,000 –is an exciting major investment and we anticipate opening the new hub in September,” she said.

Art on Yabba celebrated its first anniversary in October last year. It has presented 16 exhibitions including solo and group exhibitions for emerging and established artists from this region and further afield, hosting official exhibition openings monthly.

The gallery space has also become a venue for creative industry participants such as poets and choirs, and indicates a clear need for an art and cultural space in the Mary Valley.

BEING YOUNG active and mindful

BEING active and mindful is oh so important and a good combination. They go hand in hand in making us feel good –both physically and mentally.

And it is great to start these wonderful and positive habits early in life.

Encouraging active movement for kids and teens is vital. Physical activity has numerous benefits, being great for selfesteem, posture, coordination, confidence, weight management, body awareness and general fitness. Focusing on mindfulness can help kids to relax and avoid stress, at school or home. It can help them to focus on their breathing when life may become a bit overwhelming, and it can allow them to quiet the mind when it gets a little too busy up there.

In term one I offered both a kidFIT and a sound healing chill class for kids and teens. Both classes were greatly received.

Kids absolutely love to workout! They have so much energy to burn! Once they walk into the studio and see all the gear laid out and the music pumping, they just can’t help themselves! I make sure I keep my classes exciting, flowing and interactive, with fun and achievable challenges thrown in.

My kids & teens sound healing class is

only new, so has only been quite small in numbers. But the lovely kids who have been coming have really enjoyed it and have benefited from the relaxation. They practically float out of the building at the end. The crystal singing bowls have a special way of teleporting you to another place!

I think it is so important for kids to take the time out to just stop, relax, breathe and in their own way, meditate. Life is so fast paced these days, it’s nice to slow it down a notch every now and then.

Speaking of youth, I am also really excited to have been asked to teach the morning movement class for the upcoming YouthFest in Pomona. This is a wonderful initiative run by the Noosa Council and will be held at the Pomona Community House on April 11. Make sure you mark it in your diary and check out Noosa Council’s website for more info on what promises to be an amazing day!! I can’t wait!

So, if you’re a parent, make sure you are encouraging your little ones to get out there, both actively and mindfully.

And if you’re a kid or a teen who might be lacking in some physical activity or need to have a little

chill out sometimes, find the time to do so.

Depending on interest, I will be running both classes again in term two. So get in touch! E x erin@efitnesspomona.com.au

NUTRITION with Sarah Gray

THERE is enough food produced in the world to feed everyone. It’s hard to understand how millions in the world today are starving and yet food wastage is at all time highs.

Here’s a few staggering stats for Australia:

• Food waste costs the average household between $2000 and $2500 per annum.

• 7.6 million tonnes of food is wasted every year.

• 70% of the food wasted annually is edible.

• Australian households throw away around 312kg of food per person annually.

• 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions can be linked to global food wastage.

• Almost half of all fruit and vegetables produced are wasted.

• Reducing food waste is the 3rd most effective way to address climate change.

• 1 in 6 adults do not get adequate food and go hungry regularly in daily life.

Now you might be thinking what the hell has this got to do with nutrition or health? Everything. Diseases relating to inadequate food intake are worsening every year.

Now that I have your attention lets

get down to business. The more food we eat, the less we waste. The better it is for you and your family’s heath and the environment. I would call that a win, win.

Believe it or not, you can make a difference. Here are some ways to reduce wastage in your household:

• Use frozen fruits and vegetables. A lot of us will buy fresh and throw half away.

• Freeze leftovers.

• Take leftovers for lunch the next day.

• Freeze fruit if it is getting older and use in smoothies or homemade icey-poles.

• Stew older fruit and use for breakfast, snacks or deserts.

• Go through your pantry and donate surplus to shelters before they are out of date.

• Compost or worm farm your scraps.

• Grow your own, if possible. The possibilities are endless. Have a chat with your friends and family and make a concerted effort to have more of an impact towards good health and helping the environment.

Imagine having an extra $2000 a year in your pocket. Told you it is a win, win! You are what you eat!

THE POWER OF asking for help

IN our fast-paced world, the notion of self-sufficiency often reigns supreme. We’re taught from an early age to be independent, to tackle challenges on our own, and to persevere through adversity. Yet, in this pursuit of autonomy, we often overlook one of the most valuable resources available to us; the willingness to ask for help.

Consider this: you’re faced with a daunting task at work or a personal dilemma that feels insurmountable. Your instinct may be to soldier on, to grit your teeth and push through the difficulty alone. But what if, instead, you paused and considered reaching out to others for support?

Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a recognition of our shared humanity and interconnectedness. When we seek assistance from others, we not only lighten our own load but also create opportunities for connection,

collaboration, and mutual growth.

Think about the last time you offered a helping hand to a friend or colleague in need. How did it feel to be able to make a positive impact in their life? Chances are, it brought a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, reaffirming the power of generosity and empathy.

Now, imagine being on the receiving end of that support. How would it feel to know that you don’t have to face life’s challenges alone, that there are people in your corner willing to lend a hand or offer guidance?

Asking for help doesn’t diminish your strengths or capabilities; rather, it enhances them by allowing you to tap into the collective wisdom and resources of our communities. It’s a courageous act of vulnerability, a willingness to admit that you don’t have all the answers and that’s OK. So, the next time you find yourself facing a challenge, remember that it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help; it’s a testament to your strength and resilience. Autumn in the Garden

AUTUMN is our absolute favourite time of the year to get in the garden!

And BONUS!.. It is actually the best time of the year to plant!

The seemingly relentless hot, wet and humid weather has kept us all busy mowing our lawns.. n-e-v-e-r - e-n-d-i-n-g …mowing! Arrrgghhh!!

But finally.... the cooler days and crisper nights of autumn seem to have arrived, so it’s time to gather our gardening gloves, roll up our sleeves and get back in the garden. Hip hip hooray!

What are the perks of gardening in autumn? The biggest advantage is the lingering warmth in the soil from summer. This means that as you tuck your plants into their new homes, they’ll have the perfect conditions to establish strong root systems before winter sets in. Plus, with the milder temperatures, there’s less stress on your plants, giving them the best chance to flourish and thrive.

But perhaps the most compelling reason to get planting in autumn is the payoff come springtime. The combination of the warmth in the soil and the lower air temperatures, sets the stage for successful establishment, ensuring your plants have a strong foundation to flourish in the seasons ahead.

By giving your plants a head start now, you’ll be rewarded with a garden bursting into life when the warmer weather rolls around. It’s like laying the groundwork for a

season of lush and glorious beauty, and trust me, your future self will thank you for it.

Autumn is also the prime time for spreading some mulch around your garden beds. Mulch is like a superhero for your garden, especially in the cooler months. Not only does it suppress those pesky weeds and help retain moisture in the soil, it also acts as insulation, keeping those roots cozy when the temperature starts to drop. And as it breaks down over time, mulch adds valuable nutrients to the soil, giving your plants a boost of goodness to fuel their growth.

Let’s make this autumn the season your garden truly shines.

TAKE A HIKE IN THE HINTERLAND with Andrea Taylor

Yul-yan-man Track Beerburrum

THIS is one of the first hikes I did when starting out and would have to say it’s still one of my fav’s. Located at Glass house Mountains National Park, Mount Beerburrum Section. This hike has so much to offer, from rock scrambling to a diverse variety of flora and fauna including banksia’s, vibrant yellow flat-stemmed wattle, and beautiful reflections of the paperbark trees on the billabong. This trail is 15kms and will take you 4-5 hours.

Access and parking is next to the Beerburrum State School. The information hut has a clear map of all the trails and if you like you can add on the summit climb up Mt Beerburrum. It is a 700 meter very step paved hill with 360 degree views of this very special area of the sunshine Coast.

Yul-yan-man trail detours off to the right at the second information hut and returns along Soldier Settlers trail. This well marked trail with bright pink distance pointers, starts off with rock scrambling over and through some very large rocks which is quite challenging although heaps of fun. We did miss one of the markers (too busy chatting) as had many who’d been before us.

So if you do find yourself in this situation, Stop! And return to the last marker you saw to get yourself back on track.

After this section you will hike along a rubble trail where you will get magnificent views of Mt Tibrogargan though the gum trees. I don’t recommend going to the first signed lookout; just stick to the trail as the views are equally stunning. It is not long before you reach the bluff with great views but just wait till the second lookout. You will get to enjoy five of the 12 Glass House Mountains. They are just stunning and this is the perfect spot to sit down, have a rest and just take it all in.

At this point you will descend down a steep slippery rock face, don’t panic it’s about 20 meters and another challenging fun part of the trail.

About one kilometre from here you will reach the Trachyte Circuit where you will return along the Soldier Setter’s Trail. The hike really flattens out now and you will get to enjoy the banksia’s and yellow wattles

amongst the scribbly gums. The distinctive marking on the scribbly gums are made by the female scribbly gum moth, she lays her eggs between the layers of new and old bark. As the tree grow’s the old bark falls away leaving the intricate feeding trails of the larvae. The wildlife ranges from peregrine falcons, echidnas, and a variety of snakes including the king brown.

There are no picnic tables or toilets at the start or along the trail. The closest public toilets are located at Matthew Flinders rest area. We enjoyed refreshments at the local café before heading home. The trail is marked as a Grade 5 and taking a first aid kit and fully charged mobile phone is a must.

As always remember your hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. I drank a 3L hydration pack (dry) on this trail.

Happy Hiking!

AROUND 260 volunteers took to the streets to Clean Up Noosa last March across 14 local sites organised once again by the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA). Volunteer co-ordinator Joe Jurisevic said it was pleasing to see volunteer numbers on the increase from last year after a significant decrease from pre COVID levels, and reports of less litter and illegal dumping this year.

Plastic and cardboard food packaging, cigarette butts, other hard plastic items and numerous other household items continue to be discarded rather than binned. Glass and plastic bottles were a notable reduction.

Thank you to everyone that took part and supported our community in Cleaning Up Noosa.

NOOSA’S EXCITING FIRST EV & ELECTRIFY EVERYTHING EXPO

IN years gone by Noosa has made its mark for the annual EV Expo. With over 5,000 attendees, the event never fails to excite, innovate and inspire. Whether it be an interest in eBikes or even public transport, all bases were covered in the Electric Vehicle space.

This year, ZEN, Inc. have added ‘Electrify Everything’ as a key component of the annual event for those concerned about rising energy costs and wanting to leave a comfortable future for our kids.

By Electrifying Everything in your home or business, including shifting to electric transport and using renewable energy sources to power your ‘electrified’ home, you will save money on energy bills whilst reducing emissions from your home or business.

If this all seems intriguing or somewhat overwhelming, the team at ZEN Inc., supported by Noosa Council and Noosa Junction Association, will be hosting the EV & Electrify Everything Expo

between 9am-1pm

June 16. This is a great opportunity to talk to suppliers of Electrify Everything products & services to find out how you can make the switch and save money at the same time.

The Expo will take place at Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction. In addition to EV’s, you can expect exhibitors in solar, heat pumps, energy audits, induction cooktops, and so much more.

Come and find out how you can significantly reduce your energy bills and your carbon emissions.

For more information, visit our expo website at www.noosaevexpo.com.au Contact us if you wish to sponsor, exhibit or volunteer with like-minded folk at the event.

My 30 years of KOM

I’M honestly at a loss for words, but here goes. I’ve been running KOM with my family for approx. 30 years and I have to say that every event has been an absolute blast. All good things come to an end but surely only if there is a good reason. I believe this year was going to be a sellout, lots of people were watching for the entry to open. If wear and tear is the reason, I tend not to agree, as this cannot be blamed on 80 runners running the trail once a year. I’ll come back to this.

This historic event is a big part of Pomona’s community and culture and should be a preserved. It has created innumerable bonds, friendships and purpose for decades and has lured runners from all over Australia and NZ to our beautiful patch. The official word from National Parks (QPWS) is that the event has to be run in heats. I’m totally at a loss to explain how this could minimise wear on the trail and as for congestion, there is very little due to the spread out on the1.5 km fire trail run prior to the mountain. If safety is a concern, our record is near perfect with one serious accident in 40+ years.

I have personally completed this race 24 times, sometimes with 110 on the start line, its electrifying, thousands of people cheering, adrenaline pumping, men and women shoulder to shoulder, laughing, ribbing. There’s Lew and his two daughters having a laugh, Leslie and Kim up front with their race faces on, Howy and Steve are still discussing strategy, Rhet and I are creeping towards the front. Countdown, Hearts racing, 5,4,3,2,1 BANG!! The crowd erupts in cheer and we are off. Some take it easy, some full throttle, me, I know its gonna hurt so I generally go for it and accept the suffering, knowing it’ll be over well inside the hour.

Yes, a couple of upper sections of the trail have suffered. One due to a chain not being replaced about 10 years ago, this kept people on the hard rock. The other a spot

that needs a small stair set to keep people from going wide onto the soft stuff. Both simple fixes that could have saved this trail a lot of damage.

If there are any organisations out there that would like to take this event on, I

would be very happy to help, we have approx. 16 weeks till the 4th Sunday in July. Plan B - see you on the start line at 2.30pm. Happy summit trails. Andy Flanagan http://www.saveoursummits.org/

IMPACT WORK TOWARDS ‘THE SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS’

TEAM Impact travelled to the Gold Coast last weekend for the Queensland State Novice Titles. This tournament was the biggest one to date with over 320 nominations received.

The boxers boxed over three days in a knock out style competition where if you won you went through to the next round and if you lost you then exited the competition.

The team came home with four Gold medals and three Silver medals.

“I am very happy with the team’s performance over the weekend. We had a few of them had to box their way through to the semi-finals to reach the finals. Two of our debutants, Theo Rivera & AtaariaMai Taya both won gold via first round stoppages. What a great way to start their boxing career. The rest of the team all

boxed exceptionally well with our wins being close and our losses even closer. As a coach I look at performance over results and I am very happy with how they all performed,” coach Mark Evans said.

We will now turn our attention to our next hit out at the Caloundra RSL on March 23. The boxing season is well under way now and all preparations are leading towards our own tournament ‘The Sunshine Coast Regional Championships’ to be held at the Stadium at the Noosa District State High School. This tournament attracts people from all over and is one of the biggest tournaments to be held in Queensland. Save the date - April 20. This will be your chance to come and support our local kids.

Sailability season starts in Noosa

Sailability aims to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy of sailing, mirroring the enjoyment many others regularly experience. The Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club boasts qualified instructors, seasoned volunteers, and top-notch equipment to facilitate sailing for individuals of all abilities.

Under the guidance of qualified sailing instructors, each participant sets sail on a 12-foot Vagabond sailing dinghy, a widely used vessel for sailing training across Queensland. Carers are encouraged to accompany participants aboard to ensure a smooth transition, if needed. Safety is paramount, with a dedicated safety boat constantly monitoring the activity. Additionally, a new mobility transfer device has been acquired to assist individuals with mobility challenges, simplifying the transfer to the boat.

Sailability, a non-profit international program, was introduced to Australia in the 1990s and has been offered at the Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club since 2010. Its success relies heavily on volunteer and community support. Donations are warmly welcomed, and sponsorship opportunities are available. Community events like the

Noosa Come Together Festival and Noosa Gaff Rig Regatta, held on June 8 and 9 respectively, contribute crucial funds to this esteemed program.

The Sailability program runs annually from March, every Thursday morning, except during school holidays, spanning 24 weeks. The season culminates in a Regatta and BBQ celebration in September. Participants can access support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) via their NDIS Plan Manager.

TRIFECTA SWEEP IN THE HINTERLAND

RATEMYAGENT – Australia’s leading review marketing platform for real estate agents has announced David Berns Real Estate as the winner of the 2024 Agent/Agency of the Year Award, taking out the trifecta with David Berns winning Agent of the Year – Doonan, Heid WoodmanAgent of the Year – Eumundi and George Andrews – Agent of the Year – Tinbeerwah.

The Awards recognises Australia’s top real estate agents and agencies and celebrates their dedication to the highest standards of customer service.

Award winners and nominees are the most highly recommended performers by local Australian vendors and buyers. They are selected based on customer satisfaction ratings across the country and total number of reviews collected.

“The Agent of the Year Awards acknowledge real estate agents who go above and beyond for their vendors and landlords. Performancebased reviews are essential in enabling agents to stand out, and they’re also the main criteria toward receiving a RateMyAgent Award,” said RateMyAgent CEO Michael Davey.

“I am very proud of the efforts of my work colleagues and their commitment to delivering professional strategies and service to owners in fulfilling their property dreams. These awards have come from hard work and dedication, and it has been an absolute pleasure servicing the Hinterland community. We look forward to an even stronger 2024,” said David Berns Real Estate Principal, David Berns.

RateMyAgent is used by over 80% of Australia’s real estate agents and mortgage brokers (~51,000) to build their online presence and review portfolios.

EXQUISITE, ELEVATED LAND WITH PACIFIC OCEAN VIEWS

SITUATED high on the ridgetop in a tightly-held part of Lake Macdonald, this breathtaking property awaits someone to bring their dream to fulfilment.

This northeast-facing, five-acre empty canvas embodies the connection between mountains and sea. While surrounded by tall timbers, careful clearing has opened up a corridor to capture the ocean views and breezes. At the highest point of the block a 1000sqm envelope is ready to build on. The area is dominated by multi-milliondollar homes, so an upscale executive residence would fit in perfectly.

The balance of the property, which is zoned rural under Noosa Council, includes mixed vegetation of established gums, rainforest ferns, and bushland. Existing amenities include power to the top of the block, a large dam with earth wall, and fixed wireless NBN.

Aptly named, Clearview Drive is bordered by national park and state forest. The property has access to track 4 of the Noosa Trail Network, providing opportunities for bushwalking, mountain biking and horse riding through pristine natural environments. This is a rare opportunity to secure vacant land with seclusion, elevation and ocean views that can never be built out. All inspections must be accompanied by our agent.

HINTERNOOSA ANNOUNCED WINNERS AT AUSTRALASIAN REAL ESTATE AWARDS

THE 2024 Australasian Real Estate Results Awards were held in February in Sydney to recognise the top real estate professionals and businesses in the industry across Australia and New Zealand. The list of 159 finalists in 34 categories was announced late last year and Hinternoosa were thrilled to be named as a finalist in four award categories.

With the awards night now done, we are thrilled to announce our team has won the Culture Award for 2024.

What is our culture and why do people love being part of our team? Our Hinternoosa Culture canvas the team created together sits proudly in our boardroom and says it best.

Sirah Robb, Director and Principal, achieved recognition as a finalist for Principal of the Year following the successful merger of her two agencies, Wythes Real Estate and Hinternoosa, in April of last year. Under her leadership, the newly formed Hinternoosa superteam has thrived, demonstrating remarkable strength and growth.

Jennifer Anderson was named a finalist for Property Management

Leader of the Year due to her continuous dedication to both her department and clients throughout the last year.

Rebecca Ali-Mumtaz, leveraging her diverse skill set, played a pivotal

role in our rebrand last year and was recognised as a finalist for Support Star of the Year.

Sirah Robb, now Director and Principal of Hinternoosa, commented on the awards night, “Being named as finalists in four categories is well-deserved recognition for the incredible work our team is doing for our clients, our community and each other every day.

“Winning the Culture Award at such a high level is incredibly special. We are honoured to be recognised for our commitment to providing a work environment where our entire team can perform at their best for our clients, have fun while doing so, and celebrate each other’s successes. Thank you to every single member of our team for living our culture every single day. And thank you to all our clients who allow us to shine and do what we do best by choosing us.”
