Finally, an inflatable boat with style - here’s how PudBoat did it

PudBoat - an exciting new style of inflatable boat arrives in the UK, offering a design never seen before. This unique and groundbreaking boat is set to revolutionise the boating experience for enthusiasts across the country.

Created with comfort, safety and ease of use in mind, the PudBoat is a gamechanger for boat owners. Using drop-stitch technology this design combines looks and practicality. It features inward-facing seating with rigid sides that double as backrests, providing a nice touch of comfort.

Unlike many traditional inflatables, it boasts an inflatable flat deck allowing for more seating space and leg room. The built-in outer side buoys provide stability and a smoother, safer ride for passengers even on coastal waters.

As well as its innovative design, PudBoat aims to make boat ownership easy. With no need for a mooring or a trailer, setting up is a breeze taking fewer than 15 minutes to go from flat-packed to fully inflated.

Once ready, it can be launched into the water even from hard or rough ground thanks to the extra-durable PVC hull. It takes only one person to deflate and pack away to just 1/10th of its full size. And once wrapped in its packing bag, owners can store in their car to take from place to place.

The UK market for inflatable boats has seen a surge in demand over recent years, particularly with the rise in domestic holidays and outdoor activities since the pandemic. As more people discover the joy of boating, the PudBoat stands out from the competition with its unique design and focus on comfort. Starting with a boat which is safe and easy to use, PudBoat took the traditional style of inflatable boats and gave it a fresh upgrade incorporating new technology.

PudBoat has already received rave reviews from those who have experienced the innovative inflatable firsthand. One owner sailing on the Thames near Sonning, said an onlooker was so curious about

the new design they ran along the towpath to catch up and ask about it, saying he had never seen anything like it before. Another owner living near Poole who was new to boating, found the PudBoat incredibly easy to use. They said they enjoy taking their family out to explore Poole harbour regularly launching from Baiter slipway.

PudBoat might be new but the company is committed to making the most stylish, safe and comfortable inflatable boats available. The current model enables four adults to sit comfortably but there are plans to introduce models of different sizes and design. ‘The goal is always to encourage more people to take to the water and enjoy the benefits of owning a PudBoat’ says the company. ‘We will never stop making the most stylish, most comfortable inflatable boats on the water.

’To learn more about owning a new PudBoat yourself, visit www.pudboat.com or email boats@pudboat.com

Weighing under 60kg, the PudBoat only needs a fraction of the outboard power compared to a solid hulled boat. Pictured here on the river Thames using a 68lb thrust electric outboard motor

Amble along the Hamble

British Boating Magazine heads south this issue with a visit to the Hamble, exploring the waterway and it’s surrounding attractions.

The River Hamble, located on the south coast of England, has long been known as the epicentre of boating in Britain. With its picturesque scenery, navigable waters, and numerous marine businesses, it is a popular destination for boating enthusiasts. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sailor, navigating the Hamble can be a thrilling and rewarding experience. This comprehensive guide will provide you with all the information you need to explore this beautiful waterway by boat, from safety tips to recommended routes and must-see attractions. So grab your life jacket and get ready to set sail on a British boating adventure!

LOCAL LANDMARKS

Before you embark on your boating journey along the River Hamble, it is essential to understand the key features and characteristics of this waterway. The River Hamble stretches approximately seven miles from the mouth of Southampton Water to Botley, meandering through picturesque towns, beautiful countryside, and historic sites along the way. One of the unique aspects of the River Hamble is its tidal nature. The ebb and flow of the tides significantly impact navigation in the area. It is important to familiarise yourself with the local tide tables and plan your trip accordingly to ensure a smooth and safe sailing

experience. In addition to the tides, the River Hamble is also home to numerous marinas, boatyards, and mooring facilities, making it a hub for boating enthusiasts. The area offers a wide range of services and amenities, including fuel docks, repair shops, and provisions for stocking up on supplies.

When embarking on a boating journey along the River Hamble, it is important not to forget safety and ensure that you are familiar with the necessary licensing requirements. The safety of both you and those around you should always be top of mind. First and foremost, ensure that you have the appropriate boating license or certification. In the United Kingdom, anyone operating a pleasure craft with an engine of more than 10 horsepower needs to hold a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent

6 | SPRING 2024 British Boating Magazine
UK HOTSPOTS - RIVER HAMBLE

qualification. This certification ensures that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the waterways safely. It is also important to familiarise yourself with the local navigation rules and regulations. The Hamble, like any other waterway, has specific guidelines that must be adhered to in order to maintain a safe and harmonious boating environment.

ESSENTIAL KIT

These rules may include speed limits, right of way, and restrictions on certain areas, such as wildlife conservation zones. Additionally, make sure that your boat is equipped with all the necessary safety equipment. This includes life jackets or personal flotation devices for all passengers, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, distress signals, and a reliable communication device, such as a VHF radio. Lastly, it is recommended to regularly check the weather forecast before setting sail on the River Hamble. Sudden changes in weather conditions, such as high winds or storms, can significantly impact your boating experience and safety. Always prioritise your safety and consider postponing your trip if unfavourable weather conditions are expected.

TIDE LEVELS

Now that you are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and safety measures for boating on the River Hamble, let's dive into the best times to explore this picturesque waterway. Being a tidal river, the River Hamble experiences varying water levels throughout the day. It is essential to plan your journey around the tides to ensure a smooth and enjoyable boating experience. During high tide, the river offers deeper water and easier navigation, while low tide exposes mudflats and can make manoeuvring more challenging.

To make the most of your boating adventure, it is recommended to consult a tidal chart or refer to an app that provides real-time tidal information. This will help you plan your departure and return times, accordingly, ensuring that you have enough water depth for your vessel. In addition to the tides, considering the time of year is also crucial. Summer months, especially July and August, tend to be the busiest on the Hamble. Boaters flock to the waterway to enjoy the warm weather and idyllic surroundings. If you prefer a quieter and more serene experience, consider visiting during spring or autumn when the crowds are less pronounced. Another factor to keep in mind is the time of day. Early mornings and late afternoons often offer calmer waters and stunning sunrises or sunsets that add a touch of magic to your voyage.

LOCAL NATURE

When navigating the River Hamble, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you make the most of your boating adventure. Firstly, familiarise yourself with the navigation aids along the river. Pay attention to buoys, beacons, and markers that indicate safe passages and potential hazards. These aids are crucial for maintaining a safe course and avoiding any shallow areas or underwater obstructions. Furthermore, it is essential to follow the rules of the river and display proper etiquette. Keep to the right side of the channel, especially when passing other vessels. Maintain a safe distance from swimmers, kayakers, and other water users and always be mindful of your wake, as excessive speed can create hazardous conditions for smaller boats, riverbanks and shoreline property.

Lastly, use your charts or GPS system to plan your route and keep track of your

progress. Knowing the depths and potential obstacles along the river will help you navigate confidently and avoid any surprises.

While navigating the River Hamble by boat, don't forget to take the time to appreciate the abundant wildlife and nature reserves that this stunning waterway has to offer. The Hamble is home to a diverse ecosystem, providing a habitat for a wide range of birds, fish, and mammals. As you cruise along the river, keep an eye out for the many bird species that call this area home. From elegant herons and graceful swans to majestic ospreys and playful kingfishers, there is always something fascinating to observe. Consider bringing a pair of binoculars to

get a closer look at these feathered friends in their natural habitat. In addition to the wildlife, the River Hamble boasts several nature reserves that offer opportunities for exploration and tranquillity. One such reserve is the Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, a haven for migrating birds and a place to discover saltmarshes bustling with life.

Another must-visit spot is the Curbridge Nature Reserve, a peaceful oasis that is perfect for a tranquil stroll along its scenic footpaths. Here, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the river's surroundings while listening to the peaceful sounds of nature.

Exploring the wildlife and nature reserves along the River Hamble not only adds a

layer of beauty to your boating adventure but also allows you to connect with the natural world. So, be sure to bring your camera and binoculars, and prepare to be captivated by the abundance of wildlife and the serenity of these nature reserves.

ARCHIPELAGO EXPEDITION YACHTS - Decarbonisation of the marine industry is challenging but critical. If we are to successfully decarbonise, the answer lies beyond battery technology: electric boats are not currently suitable for offshore and longdistance use. There are a number of future marine fuels which are competing for pole position, and we look at these fuels and how they can be best used in the leisure industry.

ARE ELECTRIC BOATS VIABLE IN THE COMMERCIAL MARINE INDUSTRY? - The ZENOW GovernmentBacked Project aims to find out - The ZENOW project, led by RS Electric Boats with 15 UK marine entities, plans to introduce twenty electric workboats with £5.4 million funding, including a £4.1 million UK SHORE and Innovate UK grant. Set for delivery by March 2025 to ten UK locations, the fleet features Pulse 63s and Cheetah Marine models with RAD Propulsion electric drives. A three-year demonstration will collect data to optimise electric boat operations and promote global electric adoption in small harbours and marinas. This initiative aims to reduce emissions, offer a model for electric transition in maritime operations, and position the UK as a leader in green maritime technology.

OPTIMA ELECTRIC YACHTS - Come and hear how Optima Yachts are revolutionising the marine industry with sustainable, ultra-efficient electric boats and removing “range anxiety” with their range of up to 150 NM. With the e10 & e13 Optima Yachts are contributing to a new future in sustainable boating, preserving the oceans for future generations to enjoy.

EPROPULSION - ePropulsion have recently launched its latest innovation, the eLite electric outboard motor. The eLite, which has been created for the tender and smaller boating market, represents a new era in clean, quiet, and eco-friendly marine propulsion. The direct-drive motor and advanced design propeller deliver high efficiency with near-silent operation. With a focus on minimal maintenance and cutting-edge technology, this addition to the ePropulsion range raises the bar in electric boating standards.

RAYMARINE’S DAME AWARD WINNING ALPHA DISPLAYS & NEW SMART WIND - Greg Wells of Raymarine will present Raymarine’s new Alpha performance displays. Alpha Performance Displays are Raymarine’s most versatile marine data displays. High-bright touchscreen instruments with wide view angles offer excellent visibility from anywhere onboard. Alpha’s extensive data dashboard options and widgets make critical sailing, navigation, and engine data easy to interpret at a glance. The Alpha Series won the prestigious Dame Award (Navigation & Communication category). The Dame Award jury of marine industry experts said, “We are impressed with the Alpha Performance Display System’s performance given its lower-than-expected price point, making hi-res big screen sailing data accessible to a wider base of users.”

Greg will also introduce Raymarine’s new Smart Wind transducer (RSW). The RSW mast head unit is a professional-level wind sensor designed for leisure sailors. The RSW transducer is engineered for simplicity and accuracy using an integrated 3D motion sensor and Raymarine Smart Wind™ technology to give every skipper a new level of sailing intelligence.

Sustainable Inspiration

from the sea

Sustainability may be a buzzword in interior design, and one that can even seem a tad burdensome, ZOE HEWETT shows us why it’s important nonetheless and doesn’t have to be a joyless, earnest pursuit.

Designing more sustainably gets to be heartening, as it presents great opportunity for creativity, and improved wellbeing. Aesthetics absolutely do not need to be compromised, as its all in how its realised so here are a few ideas that focus on life near water.

It’s always tempting to bring the outside into our interior schemes, so it is perfectly natural in a waterside property to start decorating with sea-inspired hues. It is worth considering the addition of a few unexpected twists to evoke coastal charm without clichés though, to create

something a little bit different. Instead of the traditional blues and whites of sailor uniforms, sea foam and sky or Cornish crockery stripes, experiment with bolder combinations like dark navy paired with pops of vibrant orange or hot pink, reminiscent of buoy markings. This kind of look might be too dark for certain spaces and tastes but can be elegantly cosseting and perfect for those smaller rooms that don’t see a lot of natural light, or passthrough rooms where no one lingers for very long, such as a hallway, stairwell or even the loo under the stairs. These places

are ideal for a hit of unexpected, dramatic decor.

For spaces that ought to be brighter, and receive plenty of natural light, it could be fun to play with pastel ice cream tones, accented with splashes of neon colour for an upbeat vibe that captures the carefree gaiety of a day at the beach. These unconventional colour schemes will inject personality and energy into waterfront interiors while paying homage to the vibrant coastal lifestyle.

River or lake side homes may better suit inspiration from freshwater palettes and the surrounding flora and fauna. Murky, silty greens and browns would certainly be interesting to experiment with, and possible to enliven with accents of pink, yellow or orange.

Incorporating these dynamic palettes through accent walls, statement furniture

pieces, or decorative accessories allows for a fresh take on seaside aesthetics. But, creating these fabulous colour schemes sustainably means investing in natural, non-toxic paints. While they may be considerably more expensive than a typical tin, ‘eco-friendly’ paints not only enhance the health of indoor spaces but also minimise harm to waterways. With a higher quantity of pigment than cheaper paints, they achieve a better quality finish with greater depth of colour too. Conventional paints often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can leach into water systems during manufacturing and disposal. Opting for eco-friendly paint brands like Little Greene, Earthborn, or Grapehstone ensures low VOC emissions and non-toxic, child-safe formulations. These paints are derived from natural ingredients such as plant oils,

mineral pigments, and waterbased binders, reducing environmental impact and promoting healthier indoor air quality, making them absolute value for money. There is even a range of airpurifying paints available from Graphenstone, and new kids on the block Yes Colours supply all their paint in recyclable plastic pouches, reducing the weight of their product and therefore the emissions when in transit, and significantly reducing the volume of packaging that ends end up in landfill. Additionally, choosing water-based paints simplifies cleanup, as brushes and tools can be rinsed with water instead of harsh chemical solvents, further preventing water pollution.

these are now known to have extremely negative health implications for humans and animals. Since furniture is largely mass produced, the scale of this invisible problem is huge and far reaching, with flametard chemicals now being found in everything from women’s breastmilk to the lipids of sea dwelling creatures like seals and penguins.

While that may sound alarming, now that we know we can do better, and creative upholstery is a large part of the solution.

Prioritizing traditionally reupholstered vintage or antique furniture not only adds character to interiors but also reduces environmental impact and safeguards waterways.

Another way to promote clean and healthy waterways through interior design is actually to avoid buying new sofas and armchairs. These two things may at first seem entirely unrelated, but since a recent change in UK law, finished-with sofas have been classified as hazardous waste.

They are now required to be incinerated to prevent their invisible chemical contents ‘running off’ during decomposition. Modern, mass-produced furniture contains petrochemical foam which has to be treated with harmful fire retardant chemicals, in order to pass the open flame test which is used in the UK to determine fire safety for furniture. This involves placing a bunsen burner at the back of the seat on a sofa or chair and counting to 21 seconds.

Using natural materials such as sheep wool and horse hair stuffing that are inherently flame retardant, and therefore don’t require chemical treatment, those old, artisanal, traditional upholstery methods are the best.

With a decorative top fabric made from wool, linen, cotton or other plant-based fibres, it is possible to create stunning statement seating that is absolutely healthy and does not compromise fire safety.

The choice of available fabric is limitless, ranging from classic patterns to contemporary styles, plains, textures, stripes in any colour, to bespoke designs printed to order, and even motifs inspired by coastal themes and underwater wildlife, so it is very easy to create inspiring design statements.

If the upholstery catches fire within that time it fails, hence the requirement for a dousing in flametards, but unfortunately

However, due to a bizarre UK law, only vintage or antique chairs and sofas dating from 1950 or

British Boating Magazine SPRING 2024 | 23 WATERFRONT LIVING

earlier may be treated to the traditional horsehair and sheep wool approach. Any furniture with a frame newer than that has to be upholstered the modern way with flammable foams and litres of toxic flameinhibiting chemicals.

Traditionally upholstering vintage furniture with environmentally-friendly materials not only eliminates exposure to toxic chemicals in the home but also helps keep manufacturing staff safe in the workplace.

While paying highly skilled artisans to create custom chairs and sofas can come with a higher price tag, it’s really a nobrainer investment.

Many in the furniture industry are calling for legislative change to allow designers, makers and upholsterers to create seating that is safe, and stunning, out of frames from any era.

Success will likely be slow, but in the meantime there are positive actions to take even if investing in professional traditional upholstery or learning how to do it yourself isn’t an option.

Vacuuming your furniture as well as the floors frequently and thoroughly with a HEPA filter hoover may seem daft, but is highly recommended and getting loose

covers made for sofas and armchairs out of a natural fibre fabric, will inhibit the spread of vaporised FR chemical particles and keep the air in the home clean.

levels, improve air quality by absorbing toxins, and provide a sense of tranquility and relaxation.

If that sounds a little too high maintenance, then dried grasses and flowers considerately foraged from the locale are your friend.

Environmentally speaking this so much better than pesticide ridden, mono-crop cut flowers imported from abroad, and its always the things that are local to a place that add charm.

Dried grasses such as sea oats, marram grass, and beach grass bring a touch of the seaside indoors, reminiscent of windswept dunes.

Creating floral displays can be a relaxing crafty past-time that’s very accessible, with a lovely end result that add texture and depth to your decor.

Drying sea lavender, marsh marigold, and bog bean for flower arranging is a simple process that preserves their beauty and allows you to enjoy them long after they’ve been harvested. To dry each of these flowers effectively, simply harvest them when the blooms are fully open at their peak freshness before they start to wilt. Bundle small bunches of sea lavender stems together and secure them with twine or rubber bands.

Plants are another fantastic doubleduty decorating tool that also help purify indoor air, and since this is all about waterside living it makes sense to take inspiration from water gardens to bring the calming essence of the waterfront into the home.

When selecting plants to create an indoor water garden choose species that thrive in aquatic environments and can be easily maintained indoors such as water lilies, provided there is plenty of sunlight available, peace lilies, arrowheads, and lucky bamboo. These plants can be placed in decorative containers filled with water, effectively creating a little pond, or planted in aquatic soil within a watertight container to create miniature aquatic ecosystems within the home.

In addition to their visual beauty, indoor water garden plants help regulate humidity

Hang the bundles upside down in a warm, dry location with good airflow, such as a wellventilated room or a covered porch. For bog bean and marsh marigold flowers lay them out in a single layer on a flat surface, such as a drying rack or a screen instead.

Allow to air dry for about two to three weeks, or until the flowers feel dry and crisp to the touch. Once dried, remove from the bundles and store them in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use them and arrange in vases, either on their own or combined with other dried botanicals such as seed pods or branches and place on mantels, side tables, or as centerpiece displays.

There is one more advantage to waterside living when it comes interior design and that’s styling with unique and surprising decorative treasures sourced from reclamation yards and antique stores in coastal towns. Furniture and flooring crafted from locally reclaimed boat timber, salvaged from hulls or decks, can imbue spaces with unique character and history. This is a sustainable approach to interior design that and celebrates maritime heritage in a very practical way.

We believe the greatest luxury is personalisation. Each of our projects are bespoke to the clients with design at the forefront. We sat down with our design team to take a closer look at the trends we believe will make a big impact in 2024…

YACHT DESIGN TRENDS TO KNOW IN 2024:

SLOW INTERIOR DESIGN:

Slow interior design, as exemplified in SETAG’s approach, is a burgeoning trend that harmoniously blends traditional timber pieces with contemporary styling and complimentary warm earthy colour palettes. Fusing the timber pieces together with modern styling is one of the latest trends to hit the residential interior design industry - a style we believe will stick around for a long time.

This design ethos celebrates the integration of personal cherished heirloom pieces and encourages a thoughtful, deliberate approach to interior spaces. At its core, ‘slow interior design’ embraces the idea of longevity, sustainability, and a deep connection to the past.

This is a trend that SETAG excel in quite naturally, if we say so ourselves - one of the most wonderful things about refurbishing an older yacht is the abundance of quality and intricate timber work you often get to work with. These more traditional canvas’ allow us to weave the original carpentry into the new design in a timeless manor creating an interior that is both bang on trend and respectful of the original style of the boat. Although, the

harmonious marriage of traditional timber elements with modern styling is the key. The warmth and character of timber pieces serve as the foundation, providing a sense of history and authenticity to the space. These timeless materials act as a canvas upon which new design concepts can be layered, creating a rich tapestry of textures and hues.

SETAG, with our expertise in refurbishing older yachts, exemplifies the essence of slow interior design - we seamlessly integrate original carpentry into contemporary designs, paying homage to the boat’s heritage while infusing it with fresh, modern appeal.

With our beautiful Windy 37 project, this fusion of old and new was executed with finesse. A unique project that transcends craftsmanship – a vessel that now carries not just the weight of luxury but the sentimental value of family history. Our client entrusted us with the restoration and customisation of a yacht once owned by his father. Driven by a desire to rejuvenate this vessel, he approached us with a vision to blend modern luxury with the sentimental charm of the past. Now with his own children – our client wanted to create the perfect modern yacht for his family to enjoy with the sentimental memories attached.

PROMOTION - SETAG YACHTS

The inherent beauty of Cherry timber throughout the Windy was accentuated by the addition of rich brick-coloured leather details, adding depth and sophistication to the interior. A palette of neutral textures was carefully selected to complement the richness of the timber, creating a balanced and harmonious environment. Subtle retro touches were introduced to enhance the overall aesthetic...retro piping designs on the interior sofa and quilted flutes on the exterior seating added a nostalgic flair, harkening back to the era of this classic yacht. These thoughtful details not only complemented the interior carpentry but also added a layer of visual interest and personality to the space. Overall, slow interior design offers a refreshing alternative to fleeting trends. By honouring the past while embracing the present, this design philosophy creates spaces that are both timeless and deeply meaningful, fostering a sense of connection and belonging for generations to come.

TILES & PATTERN:

‘Starlink’ and ‘Eucalyptus’ luxury wall panels from Siminetti

Tiles and patterns are making a triumphant return to interior design, particularly in areas like splashbacks and Heads. What’s catching the eye of designers and homeowners alike are the pearlescent and patterned tiles that add a touch of glamour and sophistication to any space.

Pearlescent tiles, with their shimmering, iridescent quality, bring a sense of luxury and opulence to interiors. Whether used as a splashback in the kitchen or as a feature panel in the Head, these tiles instantly elevate the overall aesthetic, infusing it with a

sense of elegance and charm. Similarly, patterned tiles are gaining popularity for their ability to inject personality and visual interest into a room. From intricate geometric designs to bold floral motifs, these tiles offer endless possibilities for customisation and creativity. They can be used to create focal points or to add texture and dimension to an otherwise plain space.

One of the key advantages of using these stunning tiles is their ability to transform a space in a practical way. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they also offer durability and easy maintenance, making them ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens and Heads.

At SETAG, we understand the power of tiles and patterns in enhancing the onboard experience, we’re able to create spaces that exude quality and luxury, even in small doses. We have recently specified a couple of refit projects with mother of pearl patterned mosaics that are currently in production. We can’t wait to see the results – make sure you keep an eye on our website for the transformation.

In summary, tiles and patterns are not just functional elements but also powerful design tools that can elevate any interior scheme. Whether it’s the subtle shimmer of pearlescent tiles or the bold statement of patterned mosaics, these elements have the ability to leave a lasting impression, adding beauty and character to any space.

EARTHY COLOUR PALETTES:

Earthy colour palettes are taking centre stage in interior design, signalling a departure from the dominance of grey tones. In 2024, the focus shifts towards rich earthy tones and fresh warm neutrals that evoke a sense of comfort, harmony, and connection to nature. For marine interiors, where timber features prominently, these earthy tones beautifully complement the natural warmth and texture of the wood.

At SETAG, we employ a strategic three-tiered approach to layering these earthy hues, ensuring a seamless integration with the original boat timber. Central to our process is the recognition of boat timber as a foundational element that informs our material selections and colour scheme.

Firstly, we establish a fresh base palette that harmonises with the tone of the boat’s timber, by ensuring that the tone of any lineout (bulkhead and ceiling) materials are complimentary to the timber colour. This serves as the backdrop against which the rest of the design will unfold and build up a fresh base palette from this - ensuring a cohesive and unified look throughout the interior.

Next, we introduce deeper, earthier neutral accents that directly pull in the warmth of the timber colours. These accents may manifest in subtle details such as piping on furnishings, leather handrails or door handles, or even in the choice of soft furnishings like lampshades, scatter cushions, and

54 | SPRING 2024 British Boating Magazine PROMOTION - SETAG YACHTS

throws. By layering these earthy tones strategically, we create depth and dimension within the space while maintaining a sense of continuity with the natural elements of the boat.

Finally, we add the lead colour(s) and patterns to the scheme, serving as focal points that inject personality and visual interest into the design. These elements are carefully chosen to complement the earthy palette and enhance the overall aesthetic without overpowering the natural beauty of the timber.

Throughout this process, we remain mindful of the balance between old and new, ensuring that the timber remains the focal point while the new materials seamlessly integrate with the original features of the boat. Sofa’s, headboards, and other upholstered items can fall into any of these three categories of material selection - each decision is just guided by the desired level of drama and the overarching design vision. In essence, our approach to earthy colour palettes is rooted in a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of boat timber and a commitment to creating interiors that feel both timeless and harmonious. By thoughtfully layering tones and textures, we craft spaces that exude warmth and elegance.

Sailing into Spring

Ah, the sweet scent of spring! As the daffodils bloom and the days grow longer, there’s an undeniable sense of renewal in the air. And what better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than by updating our wardrobes with fresh, maritime-inspired styles? Fashionistas everywhere are eagerly diving into the latest trends, and this spring, it’s all about channelling those coastal vibes. Picture yourself strolling along the pier, the salty breeze tousling your hair as you sport the epitome of nautical chic. So grab your sunhat and slip on your deck shoes as we embark on a journey through the latest trends in marine fashion, tailored specifically for the coastal breezes of the UK.

A SPLASH OF STRIPES

Let’s start with a classic: stripes. There’s

something inherently nautical about those horizontal lines, reminiscent of sailboats slicing through the waves. This spring, stripes are back with a vengeance, adorning everything from Breton tops to flowing maxi dresses.

Picture yourself strolling along the promenade, the sun kissing your cheeks and the salty breeze ruffling your hair. Now imagine yourself in a crisp navy and white striped tee, paired with your favourite denim shorts. Effortlessly chic, yet undeniably relaxed – it’s the epitome of coastal cool.

But why stop there? Embrace the full spectrum of stripes this season, from bold, graphic prints to subtle pinstripes. Mix and match different widths and colours for a look that’s uniquely yours. And don’t

be afraid to experiment with unexpected pairings – after all, fashion is all about expressing yourself.

SAILING IN STYLE: NAUTICAL CLASSICS WITH A TWIST

No marine-inspired wardrobe would be complete without a nod to the timeless classics of sailor style. But this spring, designers are putting a fresh spin on nautical staples, breathing new life into old favourites.

Think oversized anchor motifs adorning chunky knit sweaters, or rope detailing adding a touch of whimsy to tailored blazers. Sailor-inspired buttons, reminiscent of those found on traditional naval uniforms, lend a sense of sophistication to even the most casual of outfits.

PRACTICAL MEETS POLISHED: THE ESSENTIALS

When it comes to boating fashion, practicality is key. After all, you never know when you might need to spring into action to adjust the sails or fend off an unexpected spray of seawater. But practicality doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style.

Invest in a quality pair of deck shoes – the kind that can take you from the deck to the shore without missing a beat. Look for styles with non-slip soles and breathable materials to keep your feet comfortable all day long. And don’t forget about the importance of sun protection – a wide-

SEASIDE SERENITY: EMBRACING OCEANIC HUES

As we gaze out over the horizon, the vast

expanse of the ocean stretches out before us, a mesmerising tapestry of blues and greens. This spring, channel that serene beauty with a colour palette inspired by the sea itself.

From serene sky blues to deep, oceanic hues, shades of blue are everywhere this

season. Whether you opt for a breezy sundress in a soft azure or a tailored blazer in a rich navy, you can’t go wrong with this timeless hue.

But don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour to your maritime-inspired ensemble. Vibrant corals, sunny yellows, and even

58 | SPRING 2024 British Boating Magazine

shades of seaweed green are all fair game this season. Mix and match different colours and textures for a look that’s as dynamic as the ever-changing sea.

ACCESSORIES AHOY!

No boating ensemble would be complete without the perfect accessories to tie it all together. From statementmaking jewellery to practical yet stylish gear, there’s no shortage of options to choose from.

Invest in a sturdy yet stylish waterproof watch to keep track of time as you sail the seven seas. Look for styles with nautical-inspired details like anchor motifs or compass rose designs for an extra touch of maritime charm. And don’t forget about the power of a good hat – whether you prefer a classic cap or a wide-brimmed sunhat, a hat is essential for protecting your head from the sun’s rays while adding a dash of style to your look

SMOOTH SAILING AHEAD

As we bid farewell to the chilly days of winter and welcome the warmth of spring, there’s no better time to embrace the spirit of the sea with maritime-inspired fashion. From breezy stripes to oceanic hues, the latest trends are sure to make a splash on the shores of the UK. So go ahead, embrace the spirit of the sea with confidence and style. Whether you’re cruising along the coast or racing across the open ocean, let your fashion choices reflect your love of all things maritime. After all, life is too short to wear boring clothes – especially when you’re out on the water. Smooth sailing awaits!

The Solent is a popular destination for sailing enthusiasts, offering a unique and exhilarating experience for sailors of all levels of expertise. Whether you are a beginner looking to learn the ropes or an experienced sailor seeking a new challenge, the Solent has something to offer everyone. With its natural beauty and favourable weather conditions, it is renowned as one of the best sailing destinations in the world. Nestled on the south coast of England, this stretch of water offers an array of exciting

opportunities for sailing enthusiasts. The Solent's strong tidal currents, challenging tides, and variable wind directions require skill and expertise, making it a favourite among experienced sailors looking to push their limits. For beginners, the Solent provides the perfect learning ground, offering sheltered waters and a wide range of sailing schools and courses to choose from. With its picturesque coastal towns, stunning views, and vibrant sailing community, the Solent is a must-visit destination for any sailing enthusiast.

When embarking on a sailing adventure in the Solent, it is imperative to choose the right yacht for your journey. The size and type of yacht you select will greatly impact your overall experience. Consider factors such as your sailing experience, the number of people joining you on the trip, and the duration of your stay.

For beginners or those looking for a more leisurely experience, a smaller, easy-tohandle yacht is recommended. These yachts offer stability and are perfect for navigating the gentle waters of the Solent. More experienced sailors may opt for larger, performance-oriented yachts, which

can handle the stronger currents and challenging wind conditions.

Whichever yacht you choose, ensure that it is well-maintained and equipped with the necessary safety gear. Some sailing schools in the area also offer yacht charter services, making it convenient for you to find the perfect vessel for your Solent adventure.

NAVIGATING THE TIDES AND CURRENTS IN THE SOLENT

Navigating the tides and currents in the Solent can be both challenging and thrilling. The Solent is known for its strong and unpredictable tidal patterns, which can greatly affect your sailing experience. Understanding the tides and currents is

essential for safe and efficient navigation. When planning your journey, it is important to consult tide charts and tidal atlases to determine the optimal time to depart and arrive at different points. Tidal streams can reach speeds of up to 4 knots in certain areas, so it is crucial to plan your routes accordingly. Additionally, it is advisable to stay informed about any relevant tidal gates, which are specific time windows when favourable currents can assist in your progress or hinder it if not timed correctly. Taking advantage of these tidal gates can significantly improve your sailing experience.

KEY LANDMARKS AND ATTRACTIONS IN THE SOLENT

The Solent is not only renowned for its challenging tides and currents but also for its breath-taking landmarks and attractions. As you sail through this picturesque region, you'll encounter several key landmarks that are worth exploring. One of the most iconic attractions in the Solent is the Needles, a row of distinctive chalk stacks rising dramatically from the sea. As well as being home to some of the most popular cruising waters in the world, Haslar Marina gives boaters access to an irresistible mix of fascinating places to visit and things to do for all ages. With 24 miles of waterfront, safe panoramic beaches, impressive naval heritage, an array of water sports, plus scenic countryside walks, historic trails, and outlet shopping, there really is something for everyone.

National boating business, boatfolk, which runs Haslar Marina, has a mission to reinvent the modern marina by creating great places for everyone that wants to be in, on, or by the water. From the experienced boater to the curious dabbler, boatfolk’s vision is to create inclusive communities to serve a new generation of boater and make its 11 marinas across the UK the first choice for people to spend time with friends and family.

The modern, purpose-built pontoons offer walk ashore berths with generous layouts, providing ample manoeuvring space and access.

Following a significant redevelopment, which was completed in 2023, the marina boasts excellent facilities including two exceptional on-site restaurants, 11 premium hotel rooms, luxurious washrooms and toilets, laundry rooms and free car parking.

The redevelopment also included the installation of an additional 36 deep water berths, a new motorboat service centre, enlarged boatyard, full service boatcare team, onsite boatpoint boat brokerage office and the introduction of a boat subscription offering, making it one of the leading boating destinations on the south coast.

After a day of adventuring, Haslar Marina offers two delightful restaurants on-site, The Creek and The Lightship, described as ‘hidden gems’ by many.

The Creek, with its unique charm and sweeping views over the marina and Portsmouth Harbour beyond, offers

RESPONSIBILITY TO THE PLANET

The boatfolk team believes that through people and places they can inspire, educate and influence behaviours to make a positive impact on the marine environment and the planet. Working closely with charities and environmental partners they are focusing on marine wildlife, ocean plastics, clean water and renewable energy.

As part of these initiatives Haslar Marina has installed a biohut cage system under the pontoons in partnership with The Seahorse Trust and the University of Portsmouth, to provide a safe home for the UK’s native seahorse species, the protected short snouted seahorse, and other vibrant marine wildlife.

The biohut cage systems, which you can watch from a live feed, provide an artificial marine aquatic nursery, which provides food and shelter to many juvenile species. It restores the ecological nursery function that is lost when natural shallow coastal waters become urban environments

and provides the ideal environment for seahorses to thrive, hunt and hide from prey.

Blazing a trail for a more sustainable future, Haslar was the first ever marina to win The Yacht Harbour Association’s (TYHA’s) new Sustainable Marina award last year, acknowledging the marina’s great work in continuously challenging and improving practices focused on marine life, ocean plastics and clean water.

As boating enthusiasts, we are all drawn to the breathtaking beauty of the British coast. Whether we sail, cruise, or use a personal watercraft (PWC) commonly known as ‘jetskis’, the allure of the open water is undeniable. However, with this privilege comes a great responsibility – the responsibility to ensure that there is enough space for all to enjoy our coastal waters safely and responsibly. One area that often highlights this responsibility is in regard to personal watercraft. While these vessels offer exhilarating experiences, they also pose unique challenges when it comes to sharing the water with other boaters. By investing in education and training, PWC users can ensure that they are enjoying their vessel safely and to its full potential, whilst remaining respectful of others on the water.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPONSIBLE PWC OPERATION

It’s no secret that some PWC riders have earned a reputation for reckless behaviour, zipping dangerously close to other vessels and disregarding basic maritime etiquette. This not only creates hazards for themselves, but also creates challenges for fellow boaters who deserve to enjoy the water in peace and safety. These challenges include:

1 SPEED AND MANOEUVRABILITY

PWCs are known for their agility and high speeds, which can pose a risk to slowermoving vessels such as sailboats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Their ability to change direction quickly and navigate tight spaces makes them unpredictable for other boaters, especially in congested areas or narrow channels.

2 WAKE AND WASH

PWCs generate significant wake and wash, especially when operated at high speeds or in close proximity to other vessels. This can create hazardous conditions for smaller boats, causing them to rock violently or even capsize in extreme cases. Additionally, the turbulence created by PWCs can disrupt the stability of nearby vessels, making it challenging for them to maintain course and control.

3 LIMITED VISIBILITY

PWCs are low-profile vessels that sit close to the water surface, making them less visible to larger boats and vessels with higher freeboards. This can pose a

danger, especially in crowded or busy waterways where visibility may be limited. Other boaters may not always be aware of the presence of PWCs until it’s too late, increasing the risk of collisions or nearmisses.

4 RECKLESS BEHAVIOUR

Regrettably, there are instances where PWC riders engage in behaviours that could be considered reckless or inconsiderate on the water. These actions may include weaving in and out of traffic, performing risky manoeuvres, or encroaching too closely on other vessels. Although these behaviours are not representative of all PWC enthusiasts, they do present safety concerns for everyone on the water. Such actions have the potential to endanger both the operators themselves and other boaters, increasing the risk of accidents or injuries. While PWCs offer thrilling experiences for their operators, it’s essential for riders to be mindful of the challenges they pose to other boaters. By investing in PWC proficiency training, adhering to maritime rules and regulations, and showing consideration for fellow boaters, riders can help ensure that everyone can safely enjoy the waterways without undue disruption or risk.

THE ROLE OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Education and training play a pivotal role in boating, particularly for PWC riders, as they equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary for safe and responsible watercraft operation. The RYA PWC Proficiency Course is a fantastic example of a course which provides valuable instruction for both beginners and experienced riders who want to consolidate their knowledge. Participants learn about navigation rules, collision avoidance, and the importance of maintaining a proper lookout. At the heart of these courses lies the crucial skill of learning how to safely share the water with other boaters, ensuring a harmonious and safe environment for all water enthusiasts.

One of the primary advantages of participating in a PWC Course is gaining a comprehensive understanding of maritime rules and regulations. Whether navigating inland waterways or exploring the open sea, it’s essential to be well-versed in the laws governing watercraft operation. These courses cover essential topics such

as navigation rules, right-of-way, and collision avoidance strategies, empowering participants to make informed decisions and navigate confidently in various maritime scenarios.

PRACTICAL INSTRUCTION AND SKILLS ACQUISITION

PWC Proficiency Courses provide practical instruction on manoeuvring techniques and emergency procedures. From mastering turns and stops to executing proper rescue manoeuvres, participants acquire the skills needed to handle their PWCs adeptly and respond effectively to unexpected situations. This hands-on training instils confidence and ensures that participants are prepared to navigate safely in real-world conditions, even in the face of adversity.

Beyond the technical aspects of operating a PWC, these courses emphasise the importance of situational awareness and maintaining a vigilant lookout. Sharing

the water with other boaters, including sailboats, yachts, and kayaks, requires a heightened sense of awareness and respect for fellow mariners. By learning how to anticipate and react to the movements of other vessels, participants can avoid collisions and minimise risks, fostering a safer and more enjoyable boating experience for everyone on the water.

Furthermore, participating in a PWC Proficiency Course promotes a culture of responsibility and accountability among watercraft operators. By investing time and effort in obtaining proper training and certification, individuals demonstrate their commitment to upholding the highest standards of seamanship and safety. This commitment extends not only to personal conduct but also to promoting a culture of respect and courtesy towards other boaters, fostering positive interactions and relationships on the water.

about ticking a box for compliance; it’s about taking responsibility for our actions on the water and ensuring that everyone can enjoy the coast without fear of accidents or conflicts.

Moreover, the advantages of such courses extend beyond just safety. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the marine environment, learning about conservation practices and how to minimise their impact on fragile ecosystems. They also become part of a community of responsible boaters who share a commitment to preserving our coastal waters for future generations.

FINDING THE BEST TRAINING PROVIDER

With so many training providers in operation, it can be challenging to choose the best one for your specific requirements. Whether this is your first foray on the water, or you are looking for a course to consolidate your existing knowledge, it is important to find a reputable operator who can provide the most relevant course to meet your needs, taught by experienced professionals.

One of the best ways to spot a trusted training provider is to find a training centre which is recognised by industry leading boating organisations such as the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). RYA certifications are recognised and respected all over the world and their courses are accompanied by high-quality learning materials. By choosing an RYA recognised training centre, you can have peace of mind that the instructors are appropriately qualified.

Working alongside instructors who have in-depth knowledge of PWC operation and boating makes it so much easier to learn new skills. When looking for the right training centre, don’t be afraid to ask specific questions about how their training will help you meet your short- and longer-term goals. A good instructor will know exactly which courses will best meet your needs and will be able to recommend the best pathway to success.

GETTING OUT ON THE WATER

As we navigate the waters of our beautiful British coast, let’s remember that we all have a stake in ensuring its sustainability and enjoyment for years to come. By investing in training and education, we not only enhance our own boating experiences but also contribute to a safer, more harmonious marine environment for all. So let’s embrace our responsibility as boaters, respect the space of others, and make every charter a testament to our commitment to responsible seamanship

BOATING ON THE BROADS...

AND BEYOND

We continue our journey through the inland waterways with Tingdene, in this issue they take us to the Broads!

The east coast has always been one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK, on both land and water. Norfolk and Suffolk boast rural beauty, stunning landscapes, magnificent castles, and exquisite stately homes. And, of course, the infamous Broads. 120 miles of navigable waterways, made up of seven rivers and 63 broads, offering a unique

experience, full of front-row seat moments to an abundance of wildlife in their habitats, landscapes that fill the horizon, and hidden historical gems.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS ON THE BROADS

Three of Tingdene Marinas & Boat Sales’ ten UK inland marinas are based on the sought after Norfolk & Suffolk Broads and provide the perfect base to spend your

days on the Broads. Waveney, Broadlands, and Brundall Bay Marinas are all closely linked, with premium facilities and fantastic boating communities. Their direct access onto the Broads navigation and easy access to the sea make these marinas somewhat rare and suitable for almost all boaters.

GO YOUR OWN WAY

All three of Tingdene’s inland Broadsbased marinas offer a unique blend of serene waterways and proximity to the sea, creating an exceptional boating and leisure experience. Despite being nestled inland, the Broads are intricately connected

to the sea through a series of tidal rivers and estuaries. Boaters can navigate from the tranquil confines of the Broads to the open waters of the North Sea, allowing for diverse adventures and an option for what kind of pace fits best with your day’s adventure.

The seamless integration of inland waterways and coastal access makes these marinas highly sought after by boating enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. Visitors can meander through picturesque villages, encounter abundant wildlife, and engage in various water-based activities. Whether it's sailing, fishing, kayaking, or simply

enjoying the serenity of the surroundings, inland marinas near the Broads provide an unparalleled opportunity to explore the heart of the UK’s waterways with comfort, ease, and excitement!

WAVENEY MARINA

Perfectly placed between both counties, Waveney Marina is home to some of the most stunning scenery the Broads has to offer. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Waveney Valley, the marina is the ideal spot to revel in the quiet life. Savour uninterrupted views across the river and marshes, and delight in the authenticity of the local wildlife to your heart’s content.

As we know, pubs and restaurants are important to boaters. ‘The Waveney Inn’, overlooking the marina, is a cosy waterside family pub to stop and visit to tuck into a reasonably priced menu of locally sourced food. A huge hit with locals and berth holders alike it’s the perfect pit-stop at any point before, during, or after your cruise.

BROADLANDS MARINA

Facing onto Oulton Broad, between the beautiful Suffolk coastline and the worldfamous Broads National Park, Broadlands Marina sits ready to welcome in passing boaters. Boasting brand-new floating pontoons and marina facilities, plus with plenty to see and do on site, this is a great stop off or place to base yourself that the whole family will appreciate.

Services on Broadlands Marina are aplenty, and there is just about everything you need to achieve some well-deserved R&R after a long day on the water. Onsite

• Britain’s largest butterfly, The Swallowtail, and the Norfolk Hawker dragonfly are found only here.

• The Broads are Britain’s largest protected wetland, and its conservation is incredibly important to the biodiversity of the UK.

• Each national park has an authority responsible for conserving the distinct qualities of their area for future generations, including conserving culture and heritage in farms, villages, towns and cities.

• The Broads come in all shapes and sizes. From small pools to vast expanses of water, only 13 of the 63 broads are fully navigable.

KEEPING BRITAIN’S WATERS CLEAR

MARINE HYGIENE TALK BLACK WATER

As the new boating season approaches, ensuring that your vessel is in top condition becomes a top priority. However, amidst the excitement of getting your boat ready for the water, it's crucial to understand the implications of black water waste on our oceans. This growing concern, primarily from boats, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems, with small vessels facing particular challenges due to the confined spaces they operate in.

Fortunately, there are innovative environmentally friendly cleaning solutions specifically designed to meet the needs of small boat owners. These eco-friendly cleaning products simplify the process of preparing your boat for the new season

ahead. With these marine friendly solutions now widely available, cleaning your holding tank and pipework is quick and simple, allowing you to maintain a pristine marine environment with minimal effort.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF BLACK WATER WASTE

Black water waste from boats comprises sewage and wastewater generated onboard, primarily from toilets and plumbing systems, which may contain human waste, detergents, chemicals, and pollutants from cleaning products. Unlike grey water from sinks and showers, black water harbours organic matter and pathogens, posing a greater threat to the environment.

Boats typically store black water in holding tanks until it can be properly disposed of at designated pump-out stations or treated onboard. Proper management and treatment protocols are essential to minimise the environmental and public health impacts associated with black water waste.

MARINE HYGIENE'S SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS

While many cleaning products used to treat black water in holding tanks contain harmful chemicals, environmentally friendly boat cleaning provider, Marine Hygiene, has developed simple yet effective cleaning sachets provide a safer alternative. Formulated with environmentally friendly

88 | SPRING 2024 British Boating Magazine PROMOTION DROP leave Flush ...the treatment sachets into the tank, head or bottle ...for a few minutes to dissolve pump, shake or wipe away www.marine-hygiene.com Cleaning Treatments

bacteria, these easy-to-use, effective cleaning sachets help reduce the risk of introducing harmful substances into marine ecosystems, while also safeguarding the vessel’s infrastructure.

Company co-founder and director Neville Sell told us, “Our mission at Marine Hygiene is to revolutionise the boating industry by providing eco-friendly solutions that prioritize the health of our oceans. Through the development of our ecofriendly Holding Tank Digester and Head Maintainer cleaning products, we aim to address the pressing need for responsible waste management practices onboard boats. These solutions offer a simple yet effective way to combat black water waste without compromising marine

ecosystems. By harnessing the power of environmentally friendly bacteria, we ensure that boat owners can maintain their vessels while safeguarding the health of our oceans and waterways."

HEAD MAINTAINER - COMBATTING ODOURS AND BLOCKAGES

Marine Hygiene's Head Maintainer offers boat owners an effective, ecofriendly solution to the persistent challenges of unpleasant odours and blocked pipes, often stemming from uric acid crystals. Unlike conventional cleaning products laden with harsh chemicals, which merely mask the issue temporarily and pose a threat to marine life upon disposal, Marine Hygiene's Head Maintainer sachets present a simpler, more effective alternative.

Harnessing the power of a carefully formulated blend of environmentally friendly bacteria, these sachets become catalysts for change when submerged in water. They release a specialised bacteria that actively seeks out and breaks down buildup, restoring clarity to pipes and systems without compromising the integrity of valves or pipework. This ensures a clean and hygienic toilet throughout the boating season, allowing for worry-free enjoyment on the water.

HOW TO USE MARINE HYGIENE’S HEAD MAINTAINER

One of the standout features of Marine Hygiene’s Head Maintainer treatments is their simplicity to use. To begin, prepare the toilet bowl by adding water. Then, drop one sachet of Head Maintainer into the bowl, allowing it to dissolve fully in around

5 minutes. If needed, utilise the solution with a toilet brush to clean the bowl's surfaces.

Once the sachet has dissolved, pump the solution out of the bowl. For ongoing maintenance, consider applying a weekly treatment for the initial 4 weeks, if feasible. By following these steps, you can ensure that your boat's toilet remains clean and hygienic with the convenience of Marine Hygiene's Head Maintainer.

HOLDING TANK DIGESTER FORMULA TRANSITIONING TO GREY WATER

Over time, holding tanks on boats accumulate waste deposits that traditional marine cleaning products struggle to fully eliminate. Despite emptying, residues

persist, emitting unpleasant odours and posing environmental risks. In contrast, Marine Hygiene's Holding Tank Digester takes a proactive stance.

By infusing specially formulated, environmentally friendly bacteria, these sachets initiate the process of transforming black water into a greener alternative known as grey water.

Upon introduction into the holding tank water, these microorganisms swiftly target and break down waste buildup, kickstarting the conversion process. This proactive approach significantly reduces odours and minimises environmental impact, offering a safe and eco-friendly solution for boat owners on their season ahead.

HOW TO USE MARINE HYGIENE’S HOLDING TANK DIGESTER FORMULA

This treatment will only work if you have a Holding Tank onboard and can close the Seacock.

Marine Hygiene's Holding Tank sachets make maintaining a pristine marine environment aboard your boat simple. For effective use, simply place two sachets into the holding tank either through the deck suction outlet or directly into the tank itself. Upon contact with moisture or residual matter commonly found in holding tanks, these sachets begin to dissolve immediately, releasing targeted microbes and friendly bacteria to thoroughly clean the tank.

The timeframe of turning black water into grey water can be affected by factors such as tank size, temperature, and bacterial breakdown speed. Consequently, the proportion of black to grey water fluctuates accordingly. We suggest an initial shock treatment of 4 weeks to start the cleaning

90 | SPRING 2024 British Boating Magazine
DROP leave Flush ...the treatment sachets into the tank, head or bottle ...for a few minutes to dissolve pump, shake or wipe away www.marine-hygiene.com Cleaning Treatments

and breakdown process in the holding tank. Once the shock treatment is completed, we suggest not discharging the holding tank, while in use, for 5 to 7 days.

For optimal results, it is recommended to undertake a weekly treatment for the first 4 weeks, followed by monthly maintenance thereafter. This proactive approach aids in addressing any existing organic buildup, ensuring optimal performance of your holding tank.

It is also important to note that the use of acidic products such as bleach, toilet cleaner, or disinfectants can neutralise the friendly bacteria in our tank digester sachets, so check that your complementary cleaning products are also eco-friendly, and don’t contain harmful chemicals which could endanger aquatic life upon release into the environment.

Marine Hygiene's eco-conscious products not only tackle the challenges of black water waste but also serve as a straightforward and efficient cleaning solution, promoting a healthier marine ecosystem. By integrating environmentally friendly cleaning products into your regular boat maintenance routine, you're contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for our oceans.

Make a list of the specific boats you are interested in and prioritise your visits accordingly. This will help you save time and ensure you don't miss any important exhibits. Secondly,

be sure to dress comfortably and wear appropriate footwear as you will be doing a lot of walking, often having to remove your shoes to get on board and explore each boat. Don't forget to bring a notepad and a pen to jot down any key details or questions that arise during your visits. Lastly, don't hesitate to engage with the exhibitors. Ask questions about the specifications, features, and any unique selling points of the boats you are interested in. Building relationships with the dealers and brokers can also be advantageous when negotiating prices or seeking future services.

Attending a boat show can be an overwhelming experience, but with a little preparation, you can make the most of it, take the time to research the boat show itself. Find out the dates, location, and any special events or demonstrations that will be happening.

Make a list of the specific questions you want to ask the exhibitors. This could include inquiries about the boat's performance, maintenance requirements, or any additional features that are important to you. Having a clear list of questions will help you stay focused and maximise your

time at the show. Next, consider setting a budget for yourself. It's important to have a realistic idea of how much you are willing to spend on a boat, as it will greatly influence your options and negotiating power at the show. Lastly, don't

forget to bring your camera or smartphone to capture photos and videos of the boats you are interested in. This will allow you to review the details later and compare different models.

Once you have done your initial preparation for a boat show, it's time to delve into the world of boat models and

pricing. This step is crucial in narrowing down your options and finding the boat that best suits your needs and budget. Start by researching different boat models that are likely to be showcased at the boat show. Look for models that align with your intended use, whether it's fishing, cruising, or water sports. Take note of the

key features and specifications that are important to you, such as size, engine power, and additional amenities.

Once you have a list of potential boat models, it's time to research their pricing. Look for recent market prices and compare them to your budget to see if they are within your

range. Keep in mind that there may be additional costs to consider, such as berthing or insurance.

It's also worth checking if there are any ongoing promotions or special offers for the boat models you are interested in. Boat shows often have exclusive discounts or packages available, so make sure to take advantage of these opportunities. By investing time in researching boat models and pricing, you can approach the boat show with a focused mindset.

Asking the right questions to boat vendors is an essential step in the boat buying process at a boat show. Once you have narrowed down your options and have a list of potential boat models, it's time to head to the show and speak directly with the vendors.

Approach each vendor with a clear set of questions to gather all the information you need. Start by asking about the boat's specifications, such as engine size and power, fuel efficiency, and the maximum number of passengers it can hold. Inquire about the boat's maintenance requirements and any warranty coverage. Don't forget to ask about the financing options and whether there are any special financing deals available at the boat show. Inquire about delivery options and any after-sales services that the vendor provides.

By asking the right questions, you can ensure that you have a

comprehensive understanding of each boat model and make an informed decision.

When attending a boat show, it is crucial to evaluate the condition and quality of the boats you are interested in. While brochures and online listings provide some information, nothing beats seeing and inspecting the boats in person. Start by examining the exterior of the boats. Look for any signs of damage or wear and tear, such as scratches, dents, or fading paint. Pay close attention to the hull, deck, and fittings, as these areas are more prone to wear. Next, step inside the boat and inspect the interior. Check the upholstery, flooring, and fixtures for any signs of damage or deterioration. Look for any signs of water leaks

or mold, which could indicate underlying problems. Don't hesitate to open cabinets, inspect compartments, and test the functionality of all systems, including electrical, plumbing, and navigation equipment. Pay attention to the soundness of the engine and ask for maintenance records if available. Lastly, consider seeking professional advice from a marine surveyor. They can provide a thorough evaluation of the boat's condition, highlighting any potential issues or hidden problems that may not be apparent to the untrained eye.

Now that you've thoroughly evaluated the condition and quality of the boats that you are interested in, it's time to talk money. Negotiating the price is

an essential step in the boatbuying process and requires a strategic approach. Start by knowing what you're willing to pay. Research the market value of similar boats and have a clear budget in mind. This will give you confidence and help you determine a fair price.

When negotiating, be respectful and professional. Don't forget that the seller also wants to make a sale, so finding a win-win situation is the goal. Be prepared to walk away if the price doesn't meet your expectations. Additionally, consider other factors that may affect the price, such as accessories, warranties, or potential repairs. These can be used as leverage during negotiations. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask for extras or

discounts. The seller may be willing to throw in additional equipment or services to close the deal. Remember, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Now that you've negotiated the price and are on your way to securing your dream boat, it's important to understand warranties and contracts. These legal documents are designed to protect both the buyer and the seller and ensure a smooth transaction. When it comes to warranties, make sure to carefully read and understand what is covered and for how long. Consider any extended warranty options that may be available and weigh the cost versus the potential benefits. Contracts, on the other hand, outline the terms and conditions of the sale. Pay close attention to the specifics, such as the purchase price, payment terms, delivery date, and any contingencies or conditions. If there are any clauses or language that you don't fully understand, consult with a professional, such as a lawyer or a trusted advisor. By familiarising yourself with warranties and contracts, you'll have peace of mind knowing that you're protected throughout the purchasing process.

Now that you have a good understanding of warranties and contracts, it's time to explore the various financing options available to make your dream boat purchase a reality. While paying in cash is always the best option to

avoid any interest charges, it may not always be feasible for everyone. Fortunately, there are alternatives that can help you spread out the cost over time. One common financing option is securing a boat loan from a bank or a lending institution. These loans typically have competitive interest rates and flexible repayment terms. It's important to shop around and compare different loan offers to find the best option that suits your financial situation. Another financing option to consider is marine financing, which is specifically tailored for boat purchases. Marine financing companies specialise in offering loans for new or used boats, and they often have expertise in valuing vessels and understanding the unique requirements of boat owners.

Additionally, you may want to explore the possibility of financing through the boat dealership or the boat show organizer themselves. Some dealerships offer in-house financing or partner with financial institutions to provide attractive loan packages to

potential buyers. Similarly, boat show organizers might have partnerships with finance companies to offer special financing arrangements during the event.

Before finalising any financing arrangement, it's crucial to carefully review the terms and conditions, including the interest rate, repayment period, and any associated fees. Take the time to calculate the total cost of the loan and ensure that it fits within your budget. By exploring the different financing options available, you can choose the one that best suits your needs and helps you achieve your goal of owning a boat.

Whilst buying a boat can be daunting, it should be one of the best days of your life, remember to embrace the occasion, draw on the experience and knowledge around you, visit as many boat shows as you can, this will really help you understand exactly what it is your looking for and the best way to achieve it, lastly, do not forget to acquire proper boat insurance to protect your investment.
