In 2013 in the city of Gela in the region of Sicily, Italy the ‘Marine Site’ brand was born, a visionary of style, practicality, and fun on the water of just one man, the sole founder and owner Antonio Adragna. Driven by his passion for the sea and experience in the nautical and marine sectors the Marine Site brand is a story of passion and quality handed down from father to son, based from their fully serviced shipyard including mooring and storage facilities Marine Site is well equipped and able to support their customers with their combined 68 years of experience, as the company focuses growth in the global market and now successfully into British waters with its partner and sole UK distributor of the brand, Thanes Marine.

It was whilst holidaying in Sicily with his

wife, that Nick Moger, British entrepreneur, successful businessman and avid boater first laid eyes on the Marine Site range, as he sat ashore, he watched as people enjoyed the Mediterranean waters and glorious weather on small open boats, splashing about on the water Nick noticed that many of the boats were the same. Stylish, spacious and practical offering plenty of deck space for the enhanced enjoyment of those on board and sitting well in the water. It was at this point, before even setting foot on board that Nick began to get an urge to find out more, what were these boats that everyone seemed to be enjoying so much. Nick returned from his holiday in Sicily as the UK’s sole distributor of that very brand of boats, bringing to the UK market ‘Thanes Marine.’

With his personal links and an experienced support network there was no question for Nick as to where Thanes Marine would base itself, and where better than the world heritage site set in the renowned cruising area of the stunning Jurassic coastline, Portland marina, Dorset. It’s fair to say that the British Boating Magazine

team needed no encouragement when Nick invited us down to review his boats and take to the water for sea trials in his desire to show us just how good the Thanes Marine boats are.

Meeting with Thanes Marine Head engineer Peter at their modern workshop facility in Portland, we were initially impressed with the spaciousness of the premises. A number of stock boats were in preparation, giving us a great opportunity to look closely at the stylish lines of each craft. The strength in the quality of build including the transom area where outboards were scheduled to be mounted, the robustness and strength of consoles, seating and sun pad areas were all very impressive and well thought out position wise, for a smaller class of day boat these boats certainly weren’t lacking in space! With ample storage lockers for fenders, ropes and safety equipment along with the typical day boating apparel that you might expect to take onboard for a day out on the water with friends or family, still allowing for good, safe manoeuvrability around the boat.

Wow, what a superb little boat! As soon as I stepped foot on to the Marine 16.5 Open, I was completely taken back at just how much boat you get with this model, immediately drawn by its stability in the water, the boat balanced and steady as I manoeuvred around the deck space, the centre console positioned perfectly for me to walk freely around both sides of the boat allowing 360 degree access and ease of operation, especially well thought out for handling fenders and ropes when coming alongside and tying off lines. With great seating and lounging areas offering a comfortable escape for guests to stay safely out of the way.

A deep and strong sided double skinned hull offering added security that really gave an ‘inside’ of the boat feeling. When often smaller day boats give an ‘on’ the boat feeling, the Thanes 16.5 Open really does offer a feeling of a much bigger boat, in doing so creating a confidence giving feeling of safety. That safe feeling didn’t stop there, with non-slip decks throughout and well positioned stainless bow rails delivering not only ample grab points but a touch of elegance and class as well. Coupled with a stylish, simple yet effective helm of instrumentation and controls with plentiful space for the addition of navigational aids, fish finders and VHF, a stainless frame supported and tinted spray screen

offering protection from spray, wind and low light from the sun made driving the Thanes Marine 16.5 Open an absolute joy. Perfectly complimented by the Tohatsu 50 HP outboard engine, this boat gave me a feeling that can only be expressed by the smile it put on my face. Light and effortless steering made cornering at speed an exhilarating ride, as the hull cut its way through the water, I was able to adjust the boats ride experience at the press of a button with the electric trim offered from the engine controls allowing me to position the bow perfectly to accommodate my speed and changing sea conditions. The soft, stylish waterproof and durable upholstery was both comfortable and easy to wash down after a day on the water! For me this really is the little boat that just keeps on giving, making it the perfect affordable family fun boat, a great first boat for anyone wanting to explore the beautiful British coastline!

The same great handling and manoeuvrability on the water, the same robust build quality complimented by the comfortable soft finishings of stylish padded and waterproof seating and sun pad areas. It’s the same, just bigger and fitted with the Tohatsu 75 HP outboard, she comes with a growl!

Instantly as you board you have notably more space, stretching the whole length and width of the boat, I could really picture heading out loaded up with the cool box and a picnic with a group of friends to drop anchor and spend hours afloat under a warm summers sun. Equally, with a tackle box full of lures, rods and lines the Thanes 19 XL would make for a great day

fishing boat, with the bigger Tohatsu 75 HP outboard easily pushing you offshore to fish over the many wrecks notorious for attracting sea anglers along our coastline, or for the water sports enthusiast seeking endless fun with Ringo’s, wakeboards or water skis, then this is the boat your looking for. The raised, bolstered helm seat allows you to anchor in behind the heightened spray screen giving you phenomenal 360-degree vision and offering a really natural and comfortable helm position, the mounted engine controls perfectly situated to maintain a steady and relaxed contact at all times, again really focusing on the continued safety conscious efforts as demonstrated in the smaller Thanes 16.5 Open.

A gentle ease on the throttle and the Thanes 19 XL Open takes no time to pick up and part the water, sitting firmly she offers a great all round experience for everyone onboard, I would however recommend to throttle back as you make

any hard turns as the 75 hp outboard did tend to bight back at you, this is a boat you need to really drive when fitted with the bigger engine option, but would I go smaller? No. The 19 XL gave a feeling of further, faster, longer and I have to say I loved it! The fuel economy was great too!

Her sleek lines and contemporary design add to the impression of being on a much larger vessel and, with the option of larger outboard engines for me the Thanes 19.5 XL Open is a one boat does all solution, whatever you’re seeking from your boating adventure, there is little to nothing that this boat isn’t suited for.

THANES TM58 STANDARD

RIBs, or rigid inflatable boats, are becoming increasingly popular among fishermen and water sports enthusiasts as they are so very versatile.

Their rigid hulls are strong and corrosion resistant, and inflatable tubes around the edges provide extra buoyancy and stability, making them less likely to capsize or take on water. RIBs are also highly manoeuvrable, which can be crucial in emergency situations.
