Hello and welcome to our October edition!

October is definitely a sporting month. This year is the first year we have the AFL Grand Final Eve as a public holiday! It is great news to all the AFL fans. But even if you don’t follow footy; it is still nice to have a day off and a long weekend! Long live AFL! We try not to talk about politics in this magazine. However this Is just so noticeable that I have to say, it only took my baby’s shower time to change the Prime Minister of Australia! I am serious. I had just finished showering Pasha, was walking out of bathroom and found that the Tony is out and Malcolm is in and all over the news. Jaw dropped!

Since Spring arrived, there have suddenly been so many activities I can enrol my kids in. How about you? Have you tried local play centres, music and yoga classes, kids’ eat free meals, golf and concerts? Go through our magazine and you will keep your kids occupied this school holiday.

John comes out of retirement to work in Aged Care

W

orking in government for many years meant transi oning into a career in aged care was a huge change for Employease student John. As well as the significant change in jobs, John was also facing coming out of re rement and ge ng back into study as a very mature student. Having last studied during his secondary school years he found se ling down to study again was a challenge, but John was determined to have a job that he enjoyed and that kept him busy.

Simple measures such as keeping a diary and alloca ng specific evenings to study meant that John was not just able to complete the course but also receive comments from trainers such as “an excellent assignment, one of the best I've seen,” which he holds as his proudest achievement within the course.

A er working hard for six months and ge ng his cer ficate, John had a job close to home within a few weeks. He states that he feels extremely confident in the workplace and doesn't worry about tasks such a li ing as the manual handling skills he learned within the course prepared him for what actually occurs. John saw his work placement as an extremely important component of the course as it was great exposure to what work would be like, there is nothing like real work experience to prepare you for employment.

Overall John believes that Employease has made coming out of re rement a comfortable and easy process and now plans to study in the disability field to further extend his knowledge.
