Hello and welcome to July 2013. This is a very special month for Your Child in Manningham magazines as we celebrate our 4th birthday. I still remember how excited I was way back in July 2009 when I printed my very first Issue with a photo of my 1yr old son on the front cover and the enjoyment I felt to finally get my magazine up and running.

It has been so rewarding to see so many local children on our front cover over the past 4 years, not to mention the great support from our readers and advertisers, which has been truly amazing. Over the years I have lost count of how many grand parents and parents with grown up children telling me how they wish they had a magazine like Your Child in Manningham when they were raising their children, this positive feedback has always been truly appreciated by my husband and I. We are now half way through the year and most of us are thinking of how we can make the school break fun for ourselves and our children. Maybe these ideas will help - Nexus Fitness is offering a great program for your children over the July school holidays, take advantage of these offers while you can! BUSINESS OF THE MONTH A prominent Melbourne tennis coach has been recognised at the national level by being one of only 8 coaches in Australia to have successfully completed the 2012 Tennis Australia Master Club Professional Course.

Eaglemont Tennis Club's Head Coach Shane Scrutton, who also received the prestigious Shane Scrutton 2012 Tennis Victoria Coaching Excellence award, completed the course in February following his efforts in developing one of the most successfully junior coaching programs in Melbourne.

Scrutton runs the modified Little tacker tennis program for children aged 3-5, the Tennis Australia Hot Shots program for children 6-10, and has been highly successful in bringing students from schools into coaching and competitive tennis.

Scrutton also runs a High Performance Squad for advanced juniors that includes some of the top juniors in the state, including current Victorian Schoolgirl singles champion Jemma Carbis (pictured).

On 12 April 2011, the Premier announced the Victorian Government's Bully Stoppers campaign to ensure that action is taken to make schools safer and protect students from any form of bullying. To support this campaign, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) has presented all Victorian schools with an opportunity to obtain between $5000 and $10000 through the Bully Stoppers grant program. Telstra is a proud supporter of the grant program and will provide each school with a digital device and cybersafety kit.

Over 100 schools received funding in round one of the program and applications for round two opened on Tuesday 11th June at: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/bullystoppers/Pages/pringrants.aspx This round of funding is aimed to assist more schools to implement strategies or programs that endeavour to prevent and respond to bullying (both face-to-face and online) and support collaborative school and community partnership approaches in their school community. Parents and/or carers have an important role in supporting schools to provide safe and supportive environments for all children. These grants provide a great opportunity for everyone at school to work together and make it known that bullying is not acceptable.

PARENT RESOURCES http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/bullystoppers/Pages/parents.aspx The parents section of the Bully Stoppers website presents parents with basic steps that parents can take if they believe their child or another child is being bullied, is witnessing bullying or may even be the bully. The site includes down loadable advice sheets that have been developed by experts in the field, including internet safety consultant, Robyn Treyvaud, clinical psychologist, Andrew Fuller and cybersafety expert, Susan McLean.

In addition, two interactive modules for parents were made available in late May. These modules have been developed in partnership with Andrew Fuller, (clinical psychologist and student well-being specialist) and Susan McLean (cybersafety expert). They have been designed to help parents understand, recognise and manage bullying and cyberbullying behaviours and to address standards of behaviour in the context of cybersafety and social media.
