5 Minutes with Juan Carlos Loyola OAM Director of Doveton Special Soccer School The Doveton Special Soccer School was started in 1993 by Endeavour Hills resident, Mr Juan Carlos Loyola (Carlos) and gives young people with a disability an opportunity to learn to play soccer – and join a wonderful community.

A former international level player and coach, whom, after arriving in Australia in 1977, and working with people with disabilities, identified the need for sport for disabled children. Not deterred, despite having limited English skills, with his wife Christina, he set up the club and it has gone on to have an enormous impact on the south east Melbourne community, helping hundreds of local children and their families.

“Players with disabilities don't play for money or fame, they play for personal achievement and love of the sport. When you start working with these people, you fall in love with them, the satisfaction just to see the happiness and the smiles in the players, this is the reward. I feel my duty is to keep going in this community.”

Carlos tries hard to give the players every possible opportunity – ensuring soccer is a space where players are not being limited by, or feel judged by the challenges of their disabilities. The club plays interstate games as well as many games in regional Victoria. 100% volunteer run, the club has regular recreational trips to different locations, and recently returned from China. The school also has a proud history of success in sport - with 19 of its players in the past 7 years representing Australia across the world.

“I'm more aware now of the necessity of sport for all these people. We are not prepared in sport, in accommodation, in work, in transport. All these four things, they are the strong issues that people with a disability face at the moment.”

Carlos has received many awards and accolades over the years including the City of Greater Dandenong's non-citizen of the year in 1999 and City of Casey's volunteer of the year in 2001. Most notably, he received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2009 Australia Day honours, and a nomination for Australian of the Year in 2014.

5 Minutes with Glory Kids Childcare This month, we met with Sandra, owner, director and lead educator of Glory Kids Childcare and Kindergarten, Narre Warren.

Tucked away amongst the Narre Warren Village, Glory Kids, runs a comprehensive educational program; including science, drama, art and music. They first opened the doors in 2011, and since then has provided first class early education in a safe, nurturing space for hundreds of local children. “We recognize that the values and opinions of families and the wider community are important and believe by working together we will encourage children to understand, respect and care for themselves and the environment as well as be accepting of cultural diversity in our community. Berwick Waters Grand Prix Playground We are so lucky to have this amazing venue locally! The Australian Gardens in Cranbourne is the second site of the Victorian Royal Botanic Gardens and a visit never disappoints. Cranbourne Gardens showcases architectural history, beautiful Australian plants (including 400+ year old replanted natives) and several landscapes.

There is plenty to see and do there, for young and old, including a bus tour, having a splash in their river, picnic areas, playgrounds, paths of all sorts of artistic designs, waterways and cafes.

What’s Cooking

Delicious Scallop Recipe

XO Scallops with Garlic Shoots Ingredients - 2 Tablespoons Peanut oil - 200g large Japanese scallops - 3 Tablespoons XO Sauce - 100g Spring onion cut into 4cm lengths - 1 Tablespoon Shaoxing wine - 1 Tablespoon Soy sauce - 1/2 Cup of chicken broth

Method 1) Heat a wok on high until it smokes, then add 1 tablespoon of peanut oil. Add scallops and stir-fry quickly until lightly brown. Remove from wok and set aside.

2) Add remaining peanut oil into the wok, stir-fry garlic shoots and spring onion for 1 minute.

3) Add Shaoxing wine and stir through xo sauce. Add chicken broth and reduce heat to a simmer.

4) Return scallops back to the wok, add soy sauce, stir through to incorporate flavours. Remove from heat and serve immediately.
