Our Balwyn Op Shop is only nine months old and is raising money for a good cause! We are supporting St Paul's College which also relocated its campus around the corner to Balwyn this year. St Paul's College is a Catholic specialist school for children with a wide range of intellectual, physical, profound multiple and sensory disabilities, complex medical needs and the individual needs to students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our school has a range of educational, developmental and therapy programs that enables children to reach their full intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual potential. q Apart from finding a bargain in store, can you donate directly to the Balwyn Op Shop?

One thing we love is to receive quality donations.We kindly ask that if you are to donate, you do this during our open hours.This will allow us to accept the donation based on our store capacity. SPINACH LASAGNA INGREDIENTS 500g spinach leaves, chopped 250g sliced mushrooms 2 tablespoons olive oil 50ml fresh cream 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 50g parmesan, grated 50g grated mozzarella Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to season Freshly grated nutmeg, to season 375g lasagna sheets Cheese Sauce 50g butter 2 Tbsp plain flour 400ml milk 50g parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon dried oregano Salt and pepper DIRECTION 1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, add chopped garlic and cook for a minute. Add chopped spinach and mushrooms slices and cook for 5-7 minutes.

Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Finally add fresh cream to the mixture and turn the heat off.

2. To make Cheese sauce, heat butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add flour and mix until smooth. Gradually add milk and stirring until thick and smooth. Season with salt, pepper and oregano. Finally add parmesan cheese to the sauce and stir over until Cheese melts.

3. Preheat the oven to 180C. Spray a baking dish with oil. Spread a little cheese sauce over the base of a baking sheet. Arrange lasagna sheets over the sauce, top with the spinach and mushroom mixture and sprinkle over some parmesan and mozzarella cheese and drizzle with 1/3 of the cheese sauce. Continue with the remaining lasagna sheets, spinach mixture finishing with the layer of cheese sauce. Sprinkle over remaining parmesan, mozzarella cheese on top and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

ASK A VET with Dr Suze I treated my dog for fleas a couple of weeks ago so why am I still seeing fleas?

Flea infestations, depending on the severity can take up to 8-12 weeks to clear! Treatment requires the regular, correct delivery of a registered flea product applied at a frequency recommended by the manufacturer. The key to understanding why things don’t always go to plan requires a basic understanding the flea lifecycle.

The adult flea, an insect you can see with the naked eye, makes up only 5% of the total flea population.The remaining 95% of the population is made up of eggs, larvae and pupae which can be found but not seen, in your pet's environment e.g. bedding, carpet and in the soil. Adult fleas, live breed and feed on your pet, a single female flea can produce up to 50 eggs a day and live for up to 100 days so populations can escalate quickly! It takes on average 21 days for an adult flea to develop from a flea egg. Fleas prefer warm, moist weather which is why they tend to be more noticeable in the warmer months. The juvenile life stages can remain dormant in an environment for at least six months, sometimes longer, so all year flea treatment is recommended.

If a regular preventative flea treatment has not been appropriately applied, the fleas you are seeing may well be the dormant juvenile environmental stages hatching out because of the warmer weather. Flea products work by targeting one or more stages of the flea lifecycle leading to the reduction and eventual elimination of the household flea population. Continued application of your current flea product will in time eliminate the adult fleas and the environmental 95%.

It is vital to treat all the animals in the household… including the cat! This removes any “reservoir hosts”. Splitting doses is also not recommended as this can reduce the efficacy of your flea treatment.

Can humans get fleas from pets?

No. They prefer the thinner skin of dogs and cats over people but they may bite around the ankles in the case of a heavy infestation.

Animal fact: Fleas can jump 20cm into the air, that's 150 time their own height!
