Welcome With Christmas and year end fast approaching, it’s a busy time of the year for most families as we start organising for the year end, and plan for the new year. The Power of 15 Minutes, an interesting read on setting aside 15 minutes out of our busy schedule to achieve our goals. The Joy of Giving is not all about the gift but the thought behind it. Parties with More Dash than Cash gives us some great tips on how to have a great party without the breaking the bank. This time of the year is also a good time to take a look at Why You Need a Will. Few more great articles not to be missed Merino Wool is the Best Kept Baby Sleep Secret, The Downside of Pink Blue Divide, and ADHD vs Vision Problems. If you are looking at childcare or school options for your child next year, check out these quality centres : Craig Family Centre (Ashburton), Glen Iris Childcare Centre (Glen Iris), and opening soon in January 2018 Little Lane ELC (Hawthorn). For primary school options, there are Erasmus Primary (Hawthorn), Ruyton Girls’ (Kew), Sacred Heart (Kew) and St Bridget’s Catholic (Balwyn North).

READING THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD After many years of practice in the area of paediatric optometry, I have realized that the requirements of a child's visual system - the way it functions, the demands placed upon it - differ from an adult in many ways. In early primary school, a child learns to read and write, so that they may utilize these skills to learn more effectively in the latter primary years. First we learn to read, then we read to learn. Reading well, reading efficiently, without undue strain, fatigue or blur, is not a given for many children. Eyes need to co-ordinate and focus, and the visual data needs then to be interpreted and processed by the brain. Children are our future. A thorough examination with a properly trained behavioural optometrist can ensure your child sees the world as best they can - nothing less is acceptable. Bookings for comprehensive eye examinations for children may be made with Dario, Optometrist.

WHY I CHOSE TO BE A STAY AT HOME (WORKING) MUM The irony of writing this article is not lost on me – it's just clicked over to 9.01am Wednesday morning and because I got home late last night from a work function / date night (Combining the two, because what husband doesn't want to tag along to a French author book signing? Genius!) I forgot to write it. Oh right, I digress. Because I got home late last night and was so exhausted by 9pm, (yes - that is what I consider getting home late) I went straight to bed after kissing the kids goodnight who had already been snuggly tucked into bed instead of writing this. One sweetly snoring in her watermelon sleeping bag which is “her” thing at the moment. The other, pretending to sleep only to yell out MUUUUUUM the minute I walk away. Ends up he wanted a double dose of kisses and cuddles – at 9 years old I'll take all the cuddles he lets me have. I sink into bed, my 30 week pregnant frame sore and heavy. I'm due 14 days after this year’s Paris to Provence festival… I hope I don't go early. The article – ah yes! Huge day tomorrow for work. My brain won't shut down for the night. I have two of my staff coming over (note* vacuum areas they'll see so it appears clean but shove the rest in the pantry so they won't notice the mess). We have back to back meetings during school hours. In the nd 2 half of the year, this is my life. It's a balancing act of being a present parent and getting my job done on serious timelines. Thank goodness mum could take them to school today. Before having kids, I decided I wanted to be a stay at home mum. I'm also French. Dad was a chef, mum was an artist. I grew up seeing them working from home – it's part of who I am and so the idea

of creating a whimsical French festival came naturally to me. It allowed me to be a stay at home mum and my home office permits me the freedom of doing school drop off and pick ups so when head lice or chicken pox rear the ugly head, I can easily pop down to school and get the menacing culprits. I try to involve my kids into the Paris to Provence festival - sometimes they get to accompany me behind the scenes into a Chef’s kitchen where they’re allowed to help make a crepe, sometimes they just love hearing that mummy had a fun photo shoot with French bulldogs. I realise that balancing work time with family time may be easier for me than most, for example one time I was invited to an olive grove, I was able to bring the kids and my husband which was a total win for me and them because they got to play with a lama and have a tractor ride by the owner. And of course, on weekends there’s the obligatory croissant tastings for example when Gontran Cherrier opened a new boulangerie in Hawthorn we as a family had to go “work” and find our favourite petit gateaux. After all, we do want the best representation of French food at Paris to Provence. I don't know what next year will bring work wise with a newborn in the house and juggling staff twice a week from home, but I love my self made job and love that I can create this little piece of France for Melbourne, and work it around my family. Sure, it's not always easy but it works for me, it's how I want to do this parenting thing. I don't want those two aspects of my life to be separate and when I get to the last few months of the year when work is overwhelming in prefestival mode and I have to ask hubby to take a day off work to help me – I feel blessed to have their support and love and come home to that every afternoon.

WIN 1 of 3 ‘TICKETS for 4' to the PARIS TO PROVENCE FESTIVAL To enter, go to our facbeook or instagam @yourchildinboroondara. Entries close on 19 November.

Laura Rancie Founder & Director of Paris to Provence: Melbourne French Festival info@paristoprovence.com.au Laura is 34 years old, married to an Australian and has two kids aged 6 and 9, with baby #3 due two weeks after this year’s festival (fingers crossed she doesn't go early). Laura's parents moved to Australia when she was five and has benefited from growing up bilingual and turning her heritage into her passion, through creating Australia's first French festival established in 2010. A little bit chaotic, a little bit creative, her style of working mum is what makes her happy. Laura's family attend a French primary school, they have two French bulldogs and return regularly home to France.

The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson Who's that singing on the savanna? It's the top-five ugly animals in Africa! The wildebeest, warthog, vulture, hyena and marabou stork swagger proudly across the savanna, rejoicing in their ugliness - and delighting their babies, who think they're perfect just the way they are. Inspired by the real-life Ugly Five safari animals, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's brand-new picture book is a jubilant celebration of animals who are often rather unloved. The funny, heart-warming rhyme is a joy to read aloud, while bold, comical illustrations bring the savanna spectacularly to life.
