ANZAC DAY 25th April by Peter Hatherley

ANZAC Day, in the tradi onal sense, commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on the beaches of Gallipoli on the 25 th April 1915. The landings marked the first occasion of a major military ac on involving Australian and New Zealand forces in World War One. This occurred just fourteen years a er Federa on and as such was an occasion in which the ANZACs were keen to prove their military worth amongst the na ons of the world. For many, this campaign marked the beginning of our na onhood. However, with the passing of me and with less tangible memory of the events of 1915 it has gradually become a day in which our na on remembers all Australians and New Zealanders that have lost their lives or been injured in war. But ANZAC Day is much more than remembering those that have died in conflict. In remembering our war dead and injured we also honour our history and those uniquely Australian tradi ons which were forged on the ba lefield. Our sense of mateship being paramount, our dry sense of humour, disregard for overbearing authority, ingenuity, courage, sacrifice and our “no worries mate” op mism are all part of the ANZAC Day tapestry. Those characteris cs displayed then are what we s ll admire today. Indeed many are of the opinion that ANZAC Day lays the founda on for the Australian narra ve.

14

Irrespec ve of how long you have lived in Australia or where you came from, ANZAC Day is for all Australians. Not just those that had family fight in War. It is no longer reflec ve of whether or not you had a forefather defending the Australian way of life. It is a day when the na on can come together and be proud of what we are as a na on. When we can reflect upon those ac ons of 100 years ago and those more recently and be thankful for the sacrifice others, and, in par cular, the hardships felt by those le behind. ANZAC day provides the means to remember the cost of war. It is a day to remember the strength of the human spirit. Above all ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance. It is not a day of celebra on but rather a profound reminder of the ul mate cost of ci zenship.

Peter Hatherley - Retired Army Ofcer
