YOUR LOCAL FAMILY MAGAZINE Dec/Jan 2021

Hi & welcome to our December/January Issue!! Wow our last issue for the year and hooley dooley what a year it has been! I think I speak for all of us when I say thank god it’s nearly over. I’m looking forward to the fresh start that we all hope 2021 will bring. 2021 will also be a new start to this magazine with a new Editor in February. This is my last magazine my last issue ever! I started my journey here way back in 2015 and It actually feels a little strange to be typing this realising I won’t be typing another ever again. I’m partly excited for a new beginning and partly melancholy thinking back over the last 5 years. Ollie was still a bubba when I started and our monthly park visits were something we both loved. I’ve met some wonderful people, learnt a lot about myself, running a business and working from home with a young family. There’s been ups and downs but it’s all been part of my journey and I'm grateful for it all. Thank you to everyone for your comments, feedback and kindness over the years. So what’s in my last edition..... Christmas this year will hopefully not look too different for most of us now. Children always make the joy of Christmas so magical and I don’t think Covid will have changed that too much. Although our photos with Santa may look a little different, it will still be my number request from my boys. Plus what a reminder when we look back in years to come seeing a photo with a socially distancing Santa! Speaking of Santa we have a article with tips on writing to him on page 10. With the borders reopening and limits on gatherings increasing it’s heartwarming to think that we will get to spend time again with our loved ones over the festive period. And with overseas travel not an option more of us will be spending our summer break in our own backyard - travelling around and exploring our wonders! In this months issue we have a few articles that may be helpful with tips for trips, holidays and staying healthy. In the Kitchen this month we have some delicious Christmas baking to make and share. They’re easy enough to have some little helpers give you a hand too. In our “Kids Corner” we have a cute New Years Resolutions sheet for kids - it's a great one to fill in and keep to look back on in years to come. You could make a few copies and all fill one in, colour the page and keep them with photos from your New Years celebrations. While you are out shopping for family and friends see if there are any local businesses that you may be able to support as they all start to open and rebuild. Vouchers are a great present too - they could be for a service, used towards some lessons Like Us On or a gift that they choose. And so for the last time from my family to yours “We wish you a Merry Christmas & a Safe and Happy New Year”

Out and About

We’ve visited some fantas c playgrounds over the past few years so we thought with the holidays coming up what be er me to share with you some of our favourites! Be sure to pack a picnic and enjoy some good old fashion no cost fun at the parks in and around Banyule & Nillumbik.

Alistair Knox Park Main Road E L T H A M Set amongst the parklands the layout is spacious & inviting. There’s a flying fox, a spinning wheel & bird nest swing. Musical equipment is spotted throughout the space along with wooden animal carvings sculptures. There’s plenty to climbing & balancing on plus a huge see-saw big enough for the whole family!

Rotary Centennial Park Wamba Road DIAMOND CREEK An abundance of play options for big & little kids: monkey bars, balancing disks, spider web, rope & rock wall, slides, bridges, a tunnel & shop window plus more! The play space is also fenced off along the road & has an undercover BBQ area, tables & bench seats & new clean toilets with baby change tables as well.

Binnak Park Anderson Parade WATSONIA The main structure has numerous climbing features leading to the top with an enclosed spiral slide. For the younger kids (or less adventurous) there’s a smaller web and a separate lower structure with bars and ropes to master. MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428

In The Kitchen

Butternut Snap Ruldoph Chocolate Tartlets Ingredients · · · · ·

250g packet Arnott's Butternut Snap Cookies 65g unsalted butter, chopped 1/3 cup cream 200g milk or dark chocolate, chopped 10 vanilla marshmallows, halved

· · · · ·

2 tablespoons vanilla ready-made frosting 20 Jaffa lollies 20 mini vanilla marshmallows, halved Writing icing Pretzels

Method - Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Place 1 biscuit over each hole of a 12-hole round based tartlet tin. Bake for 2-3 minutes or until soft. Remove from oven. Using the back of a spoon, carefully press softened biscuits into mould into a cup shape. Allow to cool then remove from tin and transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining biscuits. - Place butter, cream and chocolate in a saucepan over low heat. Stir constantly until melted & smooth (5 - 10 min.) . Pour into a bowl and refrigerate for 15 minutes or until cool but not fully set. - Fill each biscuit cases with 1 heaped teaspoon of chocolate mixture. Return to the refrigerator for 20-25 minutes, or until they are set. - Now the fun part! Gently press 1 marshmallow half, cut-side down into each tartlet. Next attach 1 Jaffa to each marshmallow with ready-made frosting to make Ruldoph’s nose, then attach 2 mini marshmallow halves above nose, cut-side up, to form eyes. Use a drop of writing icing for the pupils. Cut pretzels in half to make antler shapes & put 2 pretzel pieces above the eyes. Press in slightly to secure. ENJOY!!
