2023

Welcome to this year’s annual YSU Student Awards Banquet, and congratulations to all of the students being recognized for their service and leadership.

The students at this banquet represent the very finest of achievement that can be obtained in our YSU student experience. While demonstrating excellence in the classroom and the laboratory, these students also took full advantage of community service opportunities, leadership positions, and much of what YSU has to offer. We are proud to be associated with such engaged, intelligent and forward-thinking young people – the leaders of tomorrow.

YSU is a better place thanks to participation, collaboration, and efforts of our fine honorees. You have created a momentum that will serve us for years to come. Thank you for being Penguins, and we look forward to seeing the great impact that you will make in the future.

Animus Liberatus ...YSU is a place "Where minds are freed & bridges to success are forged"…and if you are a senior, come back to campus SOON and OFTEN!

African and Caribbean Student Union (AcsU)

“The main purpose of this organization is to teach others about our cultures and how different they are. Most students do not know the African and Caribbean countries that are represented on campus, and we wanted to give everyone an opportunity to know more about these countries. Most importantly, it is very difficult for us as international students to spend so much time away from home, and one way to get through it is to make friends who are willing to embrace our culture. So this organization provides an opportunity for people to connect and make new friends while learning about Africa and the Caribbean!”

What key characteristics make this organization outstanding?

“ACSU is outstanding because in as much as the members aim to share their culture with the YSU community, the members exist as a family on and off campus. They help and motivate each other when things get tough and they celebrate one another when they succeed. They attend people’s graduation ceremonies to celebrate their successes and they also host memorial ceremonies for lives of their friends that they lose. ACSU members create a home for anyone who needs a home by becoming their family and always supporting them. Anyone who has attended ACSU events can testify that they made new friends and they are probably still in contact with that new friend. The African and Caribbean Students Union is not like any other organization that just focuses on planning events and moving on, it also focuses on creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for students at YSU.”

Muslim Student Association

About the ConStellAtion AWARD

puRpoSe

The Constellation Award recognizes an outstanding university-wide event sponsored by a registered YSU student organization. Programs winning this award are distinguished by their inclusion of the university community and contribution to the quality of student life.

CRiteRiA

• Nominated program will have occurred during the past academic year.

• The program will have been sponsored by a registered student organization.

• The program will have been distinguished by its quality and inclusion of the university community.

• The program will contribute to the cultural or social awareness of the community.

SeleCtion

The winner of the Constellation Award is selected by the Student Awards Committee based upon the submitted applications.

“The premise of this event was that each member of the MSA would sponsor a non‐Muslim student for the day, and they would fast together. The Muslim student would hold the non‐Muslim student accountable for the day, and from sunrise to sunset, they had to put their feet in our shoes for a day. Water and food were prohibited. We wanted the non‐Muslim students to understand why Muslims fast for a whole month and what we go through just for one day. It’s about control and abstaining from one’s desires and becoming closer to God in that way. The event was hosted in the DeBartolo Stadium Club, and at 7:45 pm, it started. We had an Imam (Muslim who leads prayer) come and give the non‐Muslims a little speech about Ramadan and its importance, and then we broke our fast together.”

How did this event contribute to the cultural or social awareness of the university and/or community?

“The entire Islamic Awareness week was centered around increasing the awareness of Ramadan on campus. The Fast‐a‐thon was only one part of it. Every day, we had a different event on campus that would raise awareness about Islam and Ramadan. On Monday, we created tasbih beads (which are prayer beads), and we had a slideshow about what they are and how Muslims use them. The next day was the Fast‐a‐thon. On Wednesday, we had a hijab booth up in the Kilcawley Center. A few MSA members kindly donated their hijabs for the table. We had female students come up and try on the hijab if they wanted. The hijabi students would place the veil on them while explaining the importance of the hijab and why Muslim women choose

to wear it. They were able to answer questions people had and were able to clear up any misconceptions they had surrounding the hijab. This event week was very enlightening for many students because they were able to have questions answered about Ramadan and, in general, about Muslims that they didn’t have before.”

National Society for Leadership & Success

What has this organization done to positively impact student life on campus this year?

“With this being the first year of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) being a chapter on campus, it is vital to the organization to impact student life to the greatest extent. Once a student registers to become part of the organization, the NSLS executive board is with them every step to allow a personalized leadership experience for every member! This organization fosters leadership and allows students to work collaboratively to grow their skills and make meaningful connections. Every NSLS member has to complete four steps to be inducted into the lifetime organization. These steps include orientation, leadership training day, speaker broadcasts, and success networking teams. These steps rightfully challenge each student and allow them to be the best they can be!”

Successes and challenges this organization has experienced since its founding.

“One of the successes NSLS has had is the environment it creates for all members during the events it hosts. NSLS ensures a comfortable, stress‐free, and fun environment for all members, no matter what event is hosted. NSLS understands that some students may feel uncomfortable talking to others during events such as orientation or the success networking teams. Regardless, the environment NSLS creates cultivates casual and enjoyable discussions so that even shy students feel relaxed! Although growing the member’s leadership skills is very important to the organization, creating an environment that allows growth is even more important!”

“One challenge the NSLS faces is the decreasing number of students coming to the events in person. To be inducted into NSLS, students must complete the four steps outlined above. These four steps are offered in‐person and online, as some members cannot attend every event. Unfortunately, the online offerings have caused a decrease in attendance to in‐person events. Due to this, NSLS has created a point system to increase attendance at in‐person events. Members who attend the most events get awards and recognition; at every event, there is a chance to win prizes such as gift cards.”

“Another challenge NSLS has had is figuring out how to engage all members, so everyone feels a part of the organization. This was a challenge as members come from all different backgrounds. For example, some members take only online courses, so they are not familiar with the campus; some members are commuters making it difficult for them always to make it to campus for events; and almost all members have jobs or other responsibilities, making it a challenge to commit all their time to NSLS. Due to this challenge, NSLS decided to increase the number of events hosted to allow members a better chance to participate.”

In the words of her student:

“The American Sign Language Club became inactive during the period of COVID-19 and lockdowns. The club was restarted this year with the help of Ms. Basile and it could not have been done without her help and guidance. She has not only helped us engage in extra study sessions and learning opportunities, but she also has connected us with members of the Deaf community for additional educational experiences. She has gone beyond helping the organization grow and in addition has helped us grow as signers, students, leaders, and as people. I think I speak for us all when saying that Ms. Basile has taught us how to be better humans that are more understanding and accepting of the world and people’s differences.”

MentoR of the YeAR Jennifer Frank

Part-Time Faculty, Criminal Justice and Consumer Sciences

“Having known Professor Frank since Fall 2018, she hasn’t been there for just me, but all of her students. She has encouraged and motivated us to be the best version of ourselves; allowing us to grow and change into better individuals that can help society, not hinder it. She has planned and overseen the body positivity fashion show, EveryBODY Fashion Show, for several years now ‐ helping even those outside of YSU be comfortable in their own skin.

The Mentor of the Year is selected by the Student Awards Committee based upon the written application provided by the nominating student.

She’s open‐minded, kind‐hearted, strong‐willed, and she inspires all of her students to be the same positive force this world needs. She has impacted more lives than she knows, including my own. As a fashion major myself, she has helped me better my own education. She has motivated me to open myself to opportunities on campus and beyond. She’s knowledgeable in her teachings, and a fundamental reason in a lot of students’ education and well‐being here at YSU ‐ both current and those who have graduated; her reach is vast and motivating. She has been a mentor since she began teaching, and I’m lucky enough to be one of her students.

The world needs more Jennifer Franks, sadly there is only one. However ‐ fortunately enough, I know the one and only, and I’m grateful everyday that I do.”

“With my student leadership roles, I confidently present the needs of our students to the Board of Trustees. My goal is to represent students of all diversities and majors. As I pursue my dreams of becoming a physician, my experience as a Student Trustee will guide me as I represent and advocate for all patients, especially those in diverse and underserved communities.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Julie Centofanti is one of the hardest working students I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Her passion for learning and serving is evidenced by her more than 700 volunteer hours, a number which represents three times the requirement to graduate with the highest honors distinction. However, Julie is not satisfied with “just” doing a lot of service and volunteering. She wants to create a community of people willing and able to help and serve others. Through her time at YSU she has gone from a very talented but shy student to a leader among her community, motivating others to serve and striving to make every place better.”

IN KOREY’S WORDS:

“All in all, I’ve learned a lot since I stepped foot onto campus; I learned from other leaders that you do not have to be scared, you can make mistakes, and that part of being a leader is doing what you think is right. From these lessons, I went on to be the leader I wanted to be, not the leader I thought I should be or the leader I’d seen in other people. I now lead through my own way, a way that was purely who I was, not anyone else.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Korey Kihm is a natural leader, driven completely by an internal motivation to contribute to his community. His passion and dedication are evident in everything he does. His leadership in the past year completely revived the faltering STEM Leadership Society into a thriving organization with an active membership and regular slate of meetings and activities. Even in the most difficult of circumstances, Korey intentionally integrated himself into the campus community and has served as an outstanding role model of student excellence and success. He meets and exceeds expectations in every category, and his presence at YSU will leave a lasting impact.”

IN TAFADZWA’S WORDS:

“I spent eighteen years of my life in Zimbabwe which is in Southern Africa, but I got accepted to YSU and I was so excited about it. It was difficult to leave my family. However, I had dreams and I wanted to come to college to make my dreams become a reality. When I got to campus, the first two people that I met were resident assistants. I had to stay isolated for fourteen days before I met other students or residents in person. The residents’ assistants made sure that I get food every single day. I would have struggled if the resident assistants had not been there to help me. I wanted to be able to do the same things for all international students who were to ever come to YSU and needed support or help.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Tafadzwa has always done a tremendous job of connecting those within Housing to other departments and organizations on campus by planning of many events, including the International Student Organization’s Annual Prom Night and the African and Caribbean Student Union Week. Tafadzwa also connected her residents and our staff to these events, attesting to her capability to support those around her. This connection of Tafadzwa’s roles on campus has shown us that her ability to bring others together is astonishing by helping to educate others, as well as create a stronger sense of belonging within our community. Tafadzwa is dedicated to learning, growing, and becoming the best version of herself. Tafadzwa is a wonderful representative of not just the Office of Housing and Residence Life, but a remarkable representative of our institution as a whole.”

IN THERESA’S WORDS:

“In my three years at Youngstown State University, I have had several opportunities to interact with those around me. I have found that in all aspects of my being a student, I have found myself being drawn to leadership positions and have worked incredibly hard to serve my many communities. Frankly, I was not incredibly social before I came to college. I did not seek organizations or clubs outside of music in high school. This changed when I moved into Cafaro House as a freshman. I was finally around other people with different interests and this is where I really thrived. Now, two years later, I am a Resident Assistant working in Kilcawley House and I can truly say I love my job and the people I work with.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Theresa has been both a professional and enthusiastic leader in her time as an RA, both being a model for new and returning RAs. She has impeccable time management as she is an Honors College student, President of the Dana Horn Society, a volunteer for the Penguin Pantry and is Principal Horn of the YSU Wind Ensemble. Theresa has spearheaded the Youngstown Strings Project providing music lessons to low-income students in the area. Among all this, she values excellence as she still maintains an impressive GPA, and builds close, trusting relationships with her residents and staff members. She has not only met my expectations in her role as a Resident Assistant but has continually exceeded them and sets the bar high for those around her. In Victoria’s Words:

SeleCtion

A recipient is chosen by the Student Awards Committee based upon the completed application and input from references.

“Cultural awareness occurs in various stages of our day‐to‐day life and activities we involve ourselves in. Being an African student specifically from Nigeria, I would say I have an extent of how I should be able to enlighten people around me about certain things to magnify their ideology about things from my culture and its several ways of life. From joining organizations and holding positions to the tiniest conversation that could erupt between me and someone at Chick‐fil‐A, I try my best in making my awareness known culturally. This awareness ranges in various forms but the catchy one in which has made me have a lot of conversations with people is my accent. Just from the way I speak, it makes people curious, and I tend to solve their inquisitiveness. These opportunities are where I educate people about where I am from and answer whatever questions they may ask of me. It is always fun and enlightening having these conversations and it has shown me why we all need to be involved in things like leadership and activities to promote diversity and enlightenment.

"In addition to this, being optimistic about things has gone a long way for me as a leader and it has made people around me respect me more and not give up on things easily because challenges occur and the way we react to it says a lot about us. I want people around me to learn these ways because it also helps in our daily lives even without holding a leadership role.”

Nominator’s Thoughts:

“Ever since I have known Victoria, some of her biggest strengths are her positivity, innate curiosity, passion, and kindness. She exudes warmth, and every encounter with her makes you feel better than before that interaction. She is an extremely hard worker and does her due diligence to find opportunities for personal development and growth. Victoria never shies away from a challenge, and this attitude will take her to higher places in life.

As a nursing major, Victoria is under a lot of academic pressure and must take complex chemistry and biology classes. Despite this workload, she finds the time to stay active on campus and volunteers a significant amount of time serving as the Programming Chair for the African and Caribbean Student Union (ACSU).”

IN OLUWATUMININU'S WORDS:

“Student leadership has genuinely transformed my life more than I can imagine. I left Nigeria as a shy little girl, who did nothing but study all the time, but now I have grown into a confident and influential leader who still does a lot of studying but has also impacted the people around her and the community. Student leadership has enhanced my personal growth by increasing my network, identifying my strengths and weaknesses, and providing an avenue to develop core leadership skills. Reflecting on my impact on campus, the people around me, and the community, it is apparent that my legacy as a YSU graduate is one of excellence, awareness, and opportunity. I recently spoke with an old roommate from Nigeria who has been following my accomplishments at YSU. During our conversation, she made a powerful statement that stuck with me‐ 'Tumi, have you noticed that all your blessings have been at YSU?' And it is true. While I am an impressive and intelligent young lady, I owe a lot to Youngstown State University. This college‐ its faculty and my peers‐ saw me and encouraged me to discover myself. YSU gave me many opportunities to explore my interest and supported my endeavors. Words cannot fully explain my gratitude, but I will keep making you all proud. I promise. (When I am widely successful in the future, this experience will be in my autobiography). I love you YSU.”

IN MAGUIRE'S WORDS:

“The word community defines more than just a group of people living near one another. A community is a city that builds a person. A community shares in the success and downfalls of its citizens. A community is a safe place to call home. Through my actions, I hope to instill these community values in the next generation of YSU students. As I reflect on my YSU career, community is the word that allows me to feel a sense of accomplishment throughout my four years. Youngstown is the area where I grew up. It was the town that helped build my character. I revitalized this community as president of YSUscape. I developed my own micro‐community as a resident assistant. I served and represented my community as the vice president of Student Government. As I prepare to leave YSU, I am honored to say that I was able to impact my community. Community impact is the legacy that I hope to leave behind through my extracurriculars. YSU has given me opportunities to lead, opportunities to serve, and opportunities to impact. Having an impact on my hometown is something that I am passionate about and is something I will continue to do. That is my legacy.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Maguire cares about YSU and its students. He is always willing to lend an listening ear, a helping hand and a word of encouragement. He leads by example and encourages others to do the same. This summer while completing an internship in Colorado, Maguire still completed his SGA vice president responsibilities. He did not have to do this but he honored the role and responsibilities and completed projects by their deadlines. I was impressed by his level of dedication and commitment to YSU.”

“Maguire possesses a character that stands out in the YSU community. He is dedicated to each of the various roles he has on campus. As an RA, he did an excellent job of community building, enforcing policy, and acting as an outstanding role model for others to follow. I cannot remember a day where Maguire has not been smiling as he always presents a positive and “can do”

IN ELSA'S WORDS:

“I pride myself on leading with love. In any capacity that I am able to serve, I hope I continue to show my love for others and my community. I believe that if I were to leave a legacy at YSU, it would be one that is loving, open, hard working, giving, and a little bit dramatic. I remind myself often that I believe in working hard and being kind. I know that it is applicable to everything in my life and all that I can do. I work hard in school, in leadership roles, during service opportunities, and bettering myself. I love putting in hard work to see it pay off, whether that be in the classroom or on campus. When I see the smiles on my peers’ faces with every event that was successful, or earning a grade that I put the work into‐ it truly is reinvigorating. On the other hand, I enjoy being around people and making new relationships. I make an effort to be kind to those around me as well as being kind to myself. I find that people crave to have genuine relationships, and being a safe person to be around is a gift that I should never take for granted. Reflecting on my time here, I am so grateful for the amount of people that I am able to work with and be around. I hope that they all feel my love for them every day. Being able to serve at YSU has really strengthened these qualities within myself of love, hard work, empathy, patience and respect. I will continue to carry these attributes with me wherever I may go. Hard work and kindness can truly go a long way, and if it were to be a part of anyone’s legacy, I hope it would be mine.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Elsa's character is beyond reproach. She is a wonderful person, caring, empathic, and genuine. She has a very welcoming personality and cares deeply about other students. Her leadership contributions have been extensive, always directed to making life on YSU's campus better for everyone. Having had the pleasure of working with her, it becomes very clear that she has leadership skills that extend far and wide. She uses her gifts in service of others. To put it simply, she is terrific!”

“Whether serving in her role with SGA, student trustee, teaching assistant with honors, or any other capacity, Elsa Khan exudes kindness, compassion, integrity, and a true desire to invest in others. As a Sokolov Honors College teaching assistant, Elsa puts in the effort to learn every student’s name early in the semester and stays in touch with students in her classes from previous semesters simply because she cares about them and their success. Elsa has also remained deeply committed to serving her community. She has far exceeded the service requirement in honors, logging more than 250 hours of volunteer service in a single year. As a BaccMed student, Elsa continues to share her experiences with younger pre-med students to help prepare them for their next steps in their journey. Though Elsa will head to medical school next year, she has left her mark on YSU and honors.”

IN GALENA’S WORDS:

“My life motto is 'give back to what builds you'. After my four undergraduate years, YSU has built me. My vision always has been to give back to my own community through leadership. Whether it was within Greek Life, the Honors College, Student Government, by mentoring first year students, volunteering in the community, giving my input during Board of Trustee meetings, or simply juggling the many responsibilities a student leader has, I spent the last four years doing just that; giving back to the community as my legacy. I want to be remembered as a campus leader who inspired others. I wore many hats throughout the years: sorority woman, Peer Leader, Council President, Chief of Staff, Board Member, intern, researcher, and more. In 25 years, I want to be able to bring my kids on a campus visit to YSU as they decide where to continue their education upon high school graduation. I want to be able to walk into Tod Hall and show them my name engraved on the wall of the Board of Trustees Meeting Room under the name of many other YSU Student Trustees who went on to do amazing things. I want that name to be a reminder that anything is possible, and you can be anything or anyone. For me, that was an Industrial Engineer who's also a sorority woman that was appointed by the Governor to serve as a student member on the Board of Trustees and teaches yoga in the evenings after working multiple jobs on campus. That is what I hope my legacy is; giving back to what builds you and inspiring others along the way.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Galena’s passion and dedication is very evident in anything does. I have watched her grow and transform into a confident and capable leader that inspires and motivates those around her. No matter the job, Galena is willing to take it on. She is always authentic and exudes self-confidence in whatever she encounters. Galena truly exemplifies what it means to be a sorority woman. She has proven herself to be a selfless and humble leader and one who truly works hard for the greater good and unity of our Greek Community.”

“Galena Lupochovsky has demonstrated her belief, pride, and passion for YSU since she arrived on campus. Her positive attitude, compassion for all, and willingness to serve has been an inspiration to me from day one. Every cause, every event, every day, Galena was all in! There is no bigger believer in YSU than Galena. In the dictionary next to YandProud is the name Galena Lopuchovsky. We are so fortunate that Galena chose to be a Penguin, and will represent us as first-class Penguin forever.”

IN CLAY’S WORDS:

“I believe that I will leave a legacy of someone who truly cared. I've always cared deeply about our school and its reputation. At national conferences, I was always proud to represent our school well amongst all other institutions. I think this place has a lot of good to offer, and I love talking about it every chance I get. Beyond YSU, soon after I arrived in Cafaro Residence Hall, I also fell in love with the Mahoning Valley and have enjoyed being integrated into this new community. When regarded by my teachers, I will be regarded as someone who cared enough to do more than what was expected. I am an avid learner and reader, and I never missed an opportunity to further enrich my academics. When regarded by my fellow student, I think that they will remember me as someone who cared to fight. In my time, I served on the BCLASSE Dean's Dozen and the Presidential Mentors as a voice for the student body. In these positions, I was able to bring forward the ideas of my peers to a bigger audience and really push for positive change for our students. From my first day to my last semester, I have always truly cared about YSU, because it cared so dearly for me.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Clay is very involved on campus both inside and outside of the classroom and has developed into a very passionate leader that quickly earns the respect of his peers. Beyond his extensive involvement in Greek Life, Clay has without a doubt shown a commitment to service. He has given countless hours through Sigma Tau Gamma, PRHLs service opportunities and served as an IGNITE Ambassador. Clay always approaches situations with professionalism and a determination that is contagious. Once you get to know Clay, it is not surprising that he has chosen a teaching profession. He never stops teaching brothers or fellow peers, while continuously applying knowledge from his own experiences and by learning from others.”

“Clay Miller exemplifies what it means to be a hard-working, well-rounded YSU student. Highly involved on campus and dedicated to his career path, Clay brought the same level of organization and dependability to his work in the Office of Alumni Engagement. He was charged with managing multiple data projects, and other office duties, in the midst of a cumbersome database conversion. His meticulous attention to detail was essential in correcting data, coding involvement, researching alumni, and providing valuable information to other departments. Without a full-time staff member serving data needs at the time, Clay filled a crucial void in our operations. He has the maturity and professionalism of someone with years of experience.”
