Jimmy graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington 1998 with a BS in Architecture. He is a licensed architect with Perkins + Will in Dallas Texas. He co-founded the LaƟnos in Architecture CommiƩee, under the Dallas AIA chapter, in 2010, and serves as the co-chair for the commiƩee. He was born in Ciudad Juarez Mexico but grew up in the border city of El Paso Texas, which he leŌ in 1996 to pursue his college educaƟon.

“The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.”

Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous words ring true, especially when intenƟon meets acƟon.

“From an Architect’s Book Shelf” was envisioned as a book drive to collect books from fellow architects and distribute them to high schools that have a high percentage of minority enrollments and schools that lack an architecture program. As architects, we believe that we can inspire students to pursue a career in the field of architecture, encourage them to go to college; and, by sharing our personal experiences, mo vate them to believe in themselves and overcome sta s cs.

This collabora ve effort not only became a reality but far surpassed our expecta ons. Our original goal of collec ng 200 books proved too modest, as more than 900 books and 350 architectural magazines were collected and distributed to three local high schools.

When co-worker Yesenia Blandon and I sought out to form La nos in Architecture Commi ee (LiA)with the Dallas AIA we knew that we wanted to get involved with our local communi es, especially with those in need.

We both quickly agreed that one way to help was to somehow mo vate students to stay in school and pursue a college educa on. Since we both come from low income families and are first genera on college graduates, we know the struggles and challenges some of these young students face.

A report published last year by the Pew Research Center, enƟtled Between Two Worlds, indicates that Hispanics are the largest and youngest minority group in the United States, “One-in-five school children are Hispanic. One-in-four newborns are Hispanic. By force of numbers alone, the kind of adults these young La nos become will help shape the kind of society America becomes in the 21st century”. I was alarmed to learn that La no youths have much higher dropout rate than other youths and that those who do go to college have a lower level of comple on; “The dropout rate for La no youths was nearly twice as high as the rate for black youths (9.3%), three mes the rate for white youths (5.7%) and more than four mes the rate for Asian youths (3.7%).” When I read sta s cs like these and can relate to the challenges they face, it’s hard to stand by on the sidelines.

We have the opportunity to pass on one of our valued treasures, a book that once inspired us to become the professionals we are now, to a student in our community.

Yesenia, LiA’s co-chair, soon had an idea for an educa onal program that would entail an architecture book drive. She describes how her idea came about, “If there is something architects appreciate, its books. Realizing how much we enjoy reading them, collec ng them, and how inspired we get when we open a book full of intriguing architectural images—I also realized there are so many of them that I did not need anymore. It occurred to me that if each of us gave away a book that we don’t need any more; we could develop an amazing architectural library for local high schools. We have the opportunity to pass on one of our valued treasures, a book that once inspired us to become the professionals we are now, to a student in our community.” Thus, the program was launched, “From an Architects Bookshelf”.

We quickly began cra ing the program and set a goal to collect books during a four week period for a local high school. Dona ons could include books about architecture, interior

design, art, and construc on. With the help of Terry Salinas, a LiA member and co-worker, we put together a poster that included the details of the program and sent it out to fellow LiA members, who became Book Leaders in their offices. The posters were placed throughout the city; these included architecture firms, the AIA Dallas Chapter office, and city offices.

As part of the program, we asked donators to write a mo va ng message on the inside front cover of the donated book. Anyone who flips it open will see how our architectural community came together to support educa on, to create an apprecia on of architecture, and to raise exposure of our profession as a career path.

A er the four weeks, as the Book Leaders began bringing the collected books to our office, we were amazed to see the incredible amount of books that we were receiving. Members from the Hispanic Associa on of City Employees for Results (HACER) brought over more than 300 children’s books that they had collected; they, too, had far exceeded our expecta ons.

We had just witnessed our community coming forward to support educa on and vest in its future! With the help of LiA members, we began the task of sor ng, labeling and boxing the books and magazines that would then be taken to the beneficiary schools. Early in our planning, we had selected Skyline High School as the beneficiary school. Located in southeast Dallas, Skyline has an architecture program for

It was difficult not to feel emo onal when we saw the faces of the young students as they began to take the books out of the boxes and open them. It’s as though they had uncovered a treasure or discovered a world that perhaps did not exist in their minds.

students interested in pursuing the design professions. With a surplus of donated books, however, we sought out to find two addi onal schools. We selected Williams Preparatory School, a charter school located just north of downtown Dallas, with more than 98% Hispanic student popula on. We did face some challenges finding a third school, as it was difficult to find a school willing to accept our donated books. We called administra on offices at many schools, but they were just not open to taking dona ons, which was a bit mind boggling. Fortunately for us, Hampton Preparatory answered our call. Hampton is a charter school in South Dallas with more than 95% African American students.

While we distributed books at each of these schools, we talked with the students about the architecture profession, the importance of staying in school, and shared our personal

experiences—both the difficult ones and those that have been the most rewarding. Students were very interested, curious, and had many ques ons for us. With this program, we sought out to inspire the architects of tomorrow. We believe that if we mo vate at least one student to complete a college educa on, pursue a career in architecture, and to go on to licensure, we have achieved our goal and the program could be deemed a success! But we also hope that we can inspire the architects of today, and that through this program, mo vate others in our profession to become involved and help bring architecture to the community.

Leadership Profile of Jonathan Penndorf, AIA

Jonathan Penndorf, AIA, LEED BD+C, is a Project Architect at Bowie Gridley Architects in Washington, DC. He is the current President-elect of the Washington, DC Chapter of the AIA, to serve as President in 2012. He is also the Young Architects Forum Regional Liaison for the MidAtlanƟc. He lives on Capitol Hill with his wife, daughter, dog, cat, and fish.

I’ve always been a “doer.”

In high school and college I got involved in and oŌen ended up running many clubs and acƟviƟes.

AŌer graduaƟng it was somewhat natural to me to look for something else in which to parƟcipate. When I joined the AIA in 2001 I never thought I would be where I am today. In 2011 I will be Presidentelect of the Washington DC Chapter, which means I will become chapter President in 2012 when the AIA NaƟonal ConvenƟon rolls into our city. I’ve been told I may be the youngest Chapter President AIA|DC has had, but I felt comforted in my abiliƟes when the outgoing 2010 President noted, “you’re ready.”

From the me I got involved in local AIA ac vi es, I have been a big proponent of mentoring. I feel very lucky to have had several great mentors in academics and in my professional life. I went through the Intern Development Program at a small firm in Washington, DC where I was able to gain experience in all phases of a project’s life. I stayed at that firm through licensure, both because of the professional experiences I was gaining as well as enjoying the people I worked with on a daily basis. I was fortunate to have a great IDP mentor as well as several senior-level folks who were very willing to teach, guide, and unofficially mentor. A er seven years I decided it was me to broaden my skills and

looked for a new posi on. That was in 2007.

When the economy plummeted and the design industry faltered, I found myself looking for another posi on sooner than expected. I feel fortunate that I found one quickly. It wasn’t the right fit for me, though, and in the summer of 2010 I accepted a posi on at Bowie Gridley Architects in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington DC. I am happy to be working again in a building typology I’ve enjoyed from the start—educa on facili es.

During and a er college I was an ac ve volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Habitat is an organiza on that is truly remarkable to me, and proof that all people can make a difference in the lives of others. To me it is also a unique

AƩending Grassroots in 2009 I parƟcipated in a number of YAF events and got to meet my counterparts from other regions. In some ways it was the first Ɵme I truly understood the purpose of the YAF. en ty that brings together the building industry and everyday volunteers. I joined the DC Habitat Public Rela ons Commi ee and a er a few years was honored to be asked to join the Board of Directors. I served on the board for five years, rising to Vice-Chair and feeling confident I was helping make a difference in peoples’ lives.

I joined the AIA|DC Board of Directors in 2006 and though recently registered I found myself quickly at the helm of a new group to serve emerging professionals.

We dubbed ourselves the Emerging Architects CommiƩee and sought to serve the needs of both Associate and Young Architect members. I engaged other Young Architects to come to the monthly meeƟngs and serve as informal mentors for interns. The first year we met once a month at firms around the city, and decided the forum would be free and with no commitment to aƩend a certain number of events. The posi ve feedback from par cipants was inspiring, and we found interns returning month a er month even without a requirement to do so. We had obviously met a need. The AIA|DC Mentoring Workshop con nues to meet monthly and entering its fourth full year has served over 200 interns. The format con nues to evolve but the strong a endance showed us it was something that really was helping our members.

In 2007 I also took on a new posi on that would challenge me in ways I never thought

possible—I became a dad. Nothing in my internship prepared me for that. Being a dad has brought a lot of joy to my life (now and then tempered with frustra on or confusion).

It forced me to work on a balance among the many juggling clubs I have in the air, something I con nue to work at. Balance is the wrong word because you can never maintain equilibrium for long. You can, though, learn to delegate when possible and make decisions to shi priori es. I con nue to work on this “balance.”

In 2008 the Mid-Atlan c Regional Liaison to the Young Architects Forum (YAF) took a job overseas, leaving the posi on vacant. I stepped into that posi on right before the Na onal Conven on that year, and spent a good por on of 2008 trying to gather informa on on the posi on and figure out how best to serve the region. A ending Grassroots in 2009 I par cipated in a number of YAF events and got to meet my counterparts from other regions.

In some ways it was the first me I truly understood the purpose of the YAF. There I was, si ng in a room with about twenty other young architects who were all facing similar challenges as professionals. While none of these challenges were insurmountable, they were common to all of us. We talked about topics like star ng a prac ce, managing a project, crea ng a balance between life and work, and figuring out what the “next step” was a er licensure. I felt like these were lessons I could bring back to the region and my local chapter.

Following Grassroots, I had the idea for a program aimed at Young Architects that would

I find myself in a posiƟon to give back to those coming up aŌer me, and hopefully strengthening the chain of mentoring that binds our profession. program aimed at Young Architects that would cover non-design topics like those discussed among the YAF Regional Liaisons. A small but dedicated group of volunteers came together to create “Architecture, Uncensored,” a four-part series of candid, informal discussions presented

by Young Architects who had started their own firms. The presenters in 2009 included a sole pracƟƟoner, an architect in a partnership, and another who teaches at a local university while maintaining his small pracƟce. The last lecture was a primer on risk management, liability, and insurance. AƩendance was stellar and regular, and another lecture series was held in 2010 focusing on architects in alternate career paths. The combinaƟon of atypical topics with informal seƫng seemed to register well with other Young Architect members.

I have served AIA|DC now for five years as a board member, as Secretary to the Board, and most recently as Treasurer. Through these posiƟons and my role in the Young Architects Forum I’ve learned a tremendous amount about the profession, where architecture has been and where it may be headed. I’ve also had the chance to work with some great architects— fellow board members, commiƩee members, and naƟonal colleagues. I feel as though each of these people has taught me something and the cycle of mentoring conƟnues with each person I work with. I find myself in a posiƟon to give back to those coming up aŌer me, and hopefully strengthening the chain of mentoring that binds our profession. I am looking forward to the next two years for AIA|DC and honored to be a part of the chapter’s leadership in this Ɵme of great change and excitement.

Mentorship:

Speed Mentoring: Prepare to be Professionally Hooked-Up

Peter has lived in the DC metro area for the past five years. He is originally from Buffalo, NY and holds degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is currently employed by Cannon Design and works out of their DC area office located in Rosslyn.

Mentoring, it’s something we o en hear about in the professional world of architecture, especially in the beginning of our careers. Many firms stress its importance and encourage many young professionals to choose a Mentor early on who can guide them to the proper professional path or teach them something that can make the transi on to the working world easier. Every year in May my firm likes to take some me to remind everyone about our mentoring program. One of the main ways we do this is throwing an annual Mentoring Event with the goal of promo ng new and strengthening current mentoring rela onships. This event is typically planned by the Mentoring Liaisons of each office.

A er working for my firm for two years I was asked to become a Mentoring Liaison in my office in 2008. I agreed and joined forces with two other people at my firm, Ron Smith and Wilfredo Rodriguez. The three of us sat down in a conference room in April of that year and began to brainstorm about what we were going to do for the Mentoring Event. We began to talk about what was done in years past and how tradi onally the office got together and talked about Mentoring, had some food and beverages and then went back to work. We quickly realized that we needed to s r things up and started thinking outside the box. We

began tossing ideas back and forth trying to come up with something new and fun for our office to partake in. We realized that on a daily basis most employees only talk to the people on their project teams or in the immediate vicinity of their desks. We also realized that at that me we had a number of new hires that didn’t know people in the office well. How is someone supposed to properly find a mentor if they only know a small percentage of the office or no one at all? We needed to create an event that forced people to communicate with the en rety of the office on a one-on-one basis. By doing so, we could poten ally open people’s eyes to new mentoring rela onships. What could we do that would force everyone to talk to each other? Someone jokingly suggested “speed da ng”. We laughed for a bit about the obscurity of it, but the more we talked about it, the more it made sense. Soon we had our event planned out and “Speed Mentoring” was born.

That May we surprised the whole office and introduced them to “Speed Mentoring”. We took the loose chairs from around the office and set up rows of seats that allowed the

One minute was way too short for people to talk. “Speed Mentoring” was on a dangerous path of becoming “Fast and the Furious Mentoring” at that pace. par cipants to face one another. When the event started we gathered everyone into the seats we set up and informed them that they needed to talk with the person si ng directly in front of them. We encouraged them to talk about things that would showcase their personali es or describe their role at our firm.

Next, we informed them that we had a mer set to go off every minute for the next half hour and when that mer rang everyone had to get up and shi down a seat, those at the end of a row had to shi to the next available seat in the adjacent row. This would ensure that there was always a different pair of people si ng across from one another. A er the half hour had passed and everyone had spoken to one another, we broke for refreshments and then brought everyone back together to discuss mentoring and our firm’s Mentoring Program, and invited everyone to share any experiences they might have had with mentoring.

In the end “Speed Mentoring” was well received in my office. We encouraged all the par cipants to tell the Mentoring Liaisons what they thought and the majority of the comments were posi ve. Some people disliked the noise level and the brief period of me january 2011, pg 08

they got to talk with one another, but people appreciated what we were trying to accomplish and complimented us on our departure from the tradi onal Mentoring Events of years past.

A number of people commented on how they enjoyed talking with people they never get a chance to within the office and said they learned some new things about one another.

We also, had a couple people come up to us in the weeks that followed to inform us that they had chosen a Mentor.

Unfortunately, “Speed Mentoring” has not been repeated in my office. In lieu of repea ng the event, we decided to change things up every year, but always making sure to con nue thinking outside the box when planning the Mentoring Events. If the event was to be done again there are definitely a couple lessons learned that I would like to see implemented and a couple things I would definitely not change. First, I would see if we could use a bigger space with higher ceilings. The space we u lized in our office is quite small and in order to fit everyone in we had to move people in a serpen ne pa ern through rows. It would have been much nicer to set up one large table that everyone could have rotated around.

Also, we underes mated the noise level of that amount of people talking at once. A higher ceiling space with be er acous cs would have allowed the par cipants to hear one another be er. Another thing that I would definitely change would be lengthening the event. One minute was way too short for people to talk.

Chair: Adam Palmer, AIA LEED AB+C

Adam Palmer, AIA is a ’97 graduate (B. Arch) of the architecture program at Ball State University. Adam is NCARB certified and is a LEED AP BD+C, but Adam is first and foremost a husband and a father of two. He started his career at a small healthcare focused traditional architecture firm in Southern Indiana. In the traditional architectural role he has worked on all aspects of the building process, from business development to design through construction. He has also served as the owner’s representative during the time he worked for a healthcare program management firm. Adam is currently an Associate with Schmidt Associates in Indianapolis, where he is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to simultaneously wear all the hats he has worn in his previous work experiences. With Schmidt Associates he also has the opportunity to experience some project types outside of healthcare. Adam’s AIA experience has included regional service as the YAF Regional Liaison for the Ohio Valley Region for four years. He also has been involved with his local chapters in Indiana, Indianapolis, and Kentucky. He served a term as the Central Kentucky Chapter President-elect prior to moving to Indianapolis.

Vice-Chair: Jennifer A. Workman, AIA Jennifer A. Workman, AIA, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, began her career in Dallas, Texas and landed with Good Fulton & Farrell Architects. Her experience is in institutional and commercial projects, and since 2008 her focus has been the Perot Museum of Nature & Science where her firm is the consulting architect to Morphosis. She spends her time on site where the museum is under construction and to be completed in 2012. Jennifer’s leadership with the AIA began at the local level as the Associate Chair to the Dallas AIA where she recognized the need for emerging professionals to have a voice on committees and boards. She dedicated much of her time to various local and state committees and reinstated the previously dormant Young Architects Forum. Jennifer served at the state level as a voting board member to the Texas Society of Architects as the Regional Associate Director and then as the Dallas Director.

Her involvement at the national level began with the National Associates Committee and followed with the National Young Architects Forum as the Communications Chair.

In addition to her Vice Chair role, she is currently a chair for the Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition and an Urban Ambassador for Downtown Dallas, Inc. Past Chair: Sean Stadler, AIA, LEED AP Sean Stadler, AIA, LEED AP, currently serves as Design Principal and is an Associate Principal of the firm WDG Architecture. He focuses on elevating the firm’s stature in design, with particular emphasis on enhancing the civic realm in redeveloping communities. Mr. Stadler’s diverse experience includes commercial, residential, educational, sporting and medical facilities. He holds senior responsibilities for strategic planning; design oversight; project management; marketing; recruiting and hiring, and has helped to develop the firm’s mentoring program. An active member of the design community, Mr. Stadler has been a panel speaker, moderator, and presenter at events such as the AIA National Convention; he has served as an awards juror for programs such as the AIA Institute Honors and Awards; and he has frequently served as a design critic for both Kent State and the Catholic University of America’s Architecture Schools. Sean has served as the AIA National Intern/Associate Committee Chairman (NAC) and the AIA Cleveland Chapter Associate Director. Mr. Stadler was honored in Cleveland with an AIA Presidents Award for his service to the profession and was selected as one of Building Design + Construction magazine’s winners of the 2009 “40 Under 40” competition.

Matthew Dumich, AIA is a project manager with Valerio Dewalt Train Associates in Chicago. VDTA is a high-energy national architectural practice with offices in Chicago and Palo Alto. The firm serves corporate, institutional and private clients from coast to coast. Matt’s work includes new and renovated commercial and mixed-use buildings.

Matt holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) and serves on the Board of Trustees for the UWM Alumni Association. In 2008 he was honored with the Graduate of the Last Decade Award from the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Matt is the former Chairman of the AIA Chicago - Young Architects Forum and the YAF Regional Liaison for Illinois. He is currently the Programs Advisor for the AIA National YAF Advisory Committee. He is the recipient of an AIA Emerging Professionals Component Grant to develop BRIDGE, a mentoring program that pairs Young Architects with local members of the College of Fellows. Events Advisor: Brad Benjamin, AIA Brad Benjamin, AIA is an architect in Greenville, SC. He graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Design, a Bachelor of Science in Construction Science and Management, and a Masters of Architecture. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Derek earned masters degrees in architecture and business. At m ARCHITECTS, Derek oversees much of the firm’s civic and institutional projects. His work has garnered multiple awards at the local and national level, and has been exhibited at the Texas Society of Architects annual convention and at AIA national headquarters. Jason Dale Pierce, AIA, LEED AP is the current Young Architects Forum Regional Liaison Advisor and member of the 2011 YAF Advisory Committee. A project architect with HOK, Jason recently transferred to HOK’s St. Louis office via San Francisco where he is currently working on the modernization of the Byron G. Rogers Federal office building with the United States General Services Administration. Jason recently served as Co-Chair of the AIASF Mentorship Committee and chaired the Long Range Planning committee for AIA California Council in 2010. He served as Vice President of the Academy of Emerging Professionals with AIACC from 2008 through 2009. Jason was a former recipient of the National Jason Pettigrew Memorial ARE Scholarship and received the AIA San Francisco’s Associate of the Year Award in 2008.

Prior to founding MSK Architects, Ms. Kook has worked as a project manager and architect for two of the leading A/E firms in Michigan, and as an architect and an urban designer for NSW Government Architect’s Office in Sydney, Australia. Middle AtlanƟc: Jonathan Penndorf, AIA LEED AP Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia Jonathan Penndorf, AIA, LEED AP, is currently a Project Architect at Bowie Gridley Architects in Washington DC. Originally from New York, Jon a ended the Catholic University of America in Washington DC where he earned his Master of Architecture degree.

Teera Games, AIA, LEED AP is a Project Architect and Designer for Cannon Design. Ms. Games is currently the Project Architect and Project Designer for Tidewater Community College’s New Student Center in Norfolk, Virginia, as well as for Texas Chris an University’s Brown Lupton University Union in Fort Worth, Texas. Ms. Games graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Ins tute and State University, earning her Bachelors in Architecture, and has since been ac vely par cipa ng in outreach programs in her local community and in the A/E/C industry. As part of the commendaƟon, the CNA/Schinnerer program meets all of the 10 commendaƟon criteria as established by the AIA Board of Directors.

Constant evoluƟon. A prominent characterisƟc of most professions is constant change and confrontaƟon by new demands, enabled by new technologies and subject to new economic condiƟons. As a professional, one recognizes the obliga on to protect public health, safety and welfare and to advance both personal and shared professional knowledge and capabili es.

The journey of becoming a professional and con nuously increasing one’s knowledge and abili es is a challenge. It is one that o en takes the professional forward far more quickly than other components of our society. For instance, it is difficult for the law, which is based both on statutes and cases, to advance as quickly as technological changes. The insurance industry, which in large part is based on the liabili es established under the legal system, o en finds it difficult to keep up with developments.

Professional liability insurance is meant to facilitate professional services. It is wri en to cover a broad range of services thus enabling policyholders to meet changing demands and evolving prac ce paradigms. The insurance industry constantly monitors developments in the profession to reveal exposures and iden fy emerging sources of risk for construc onrelated professional service firms.

Changing PracƟce Paradigms and Business Models Within the next few years, professional service

firms will see significant changes in how they prac ce. Many of these changes will be the result of new technologies in design and communica ons. The demands of clients for me and cost efficiencies are pushing nonlinear design and construc on project delivery systems.

Technology as a Driver of Risk The use of digital tools can significantly increase the ability of firms to use their exper se to develop sophis cated design solu ons.

Electronic communica on systems ranging from email to project websites can facilitate the sharing of informa on. Parametric modeling so ware can foster the integra on of design and construc on and provide the project client with a be er understanding of the trade-offs intrinsic in the design and construc on process.

But advances in the use of technology also can increase the exposure of firms to professional and business risks.

Professional service firms have seen their internal management prac ces and project delivery procedures change significantly because of their escala ng reliance on so ware and digital communica ons and produc on devices. Many firms have incorporated technological advances into their opera ons.

Some, however, have not fully understood the business and professional exposures intrinsic in digital prac ce. Other firms have been hesitant to pursue the commercial and technical advantages now available or emerging because of their apprehensions—o en unfounded—

Building InformaƟon Modeling Can Blur Known Legal ResponsibiliƟes

Construc on-related professional services firms have unprecedented opportuni es to increase their profitability, level of service, status in the marketplace, and support for their clients and the public good when they recognize how digital prac ce might change their risk profile and act to properly manage or insure their exposures.

Concerns over ini al costs and the money value of me, a desire to minimize opera ng expenses, and the regulatory or social pressures for sustainability all will impact how the built environment is created, managed and maintained. Building Informa on Modeling will be the tool to enable the integra on of not only the informa on about the building but also the crea ve, construc ve and controlling processes. This undoubtedly will challenge all aspects of the current posi ons of the par es in design and construc on.

While some professional liability insurance covers broadly defined design services, it is not meant to cover general technology-based risks such as lost data, virus corrup on, or general so ware glitches. Personal injury exposures such as defama on or harassment not related to professional services, confiden ality and security viola ons in the sharing of informa on, or the destruc on caused by disasters or the resultant cost of recovery efforts are generally not covered either.

There are exposures and risks created or exacerbated by the use of technology that are not inherent in the performance of professional services. Managing these exposures—and, when possible, insuring against their effect—is prudent for all types of firms but is especially important for professional services firms where their consequences can significantly impact both opera ons and reputa on.

Such exposures require specialty insurance in addi on to standard insurance policies to properly address the risks involved.

The blurring of the bright line that has separated design and construc on may mean that the role of those trained, and perhaps licensed as professionals, will change significantly. The combined forces of client demands and new technologies are serving as a catalyst for more integrated project delivery methods based on the use of BIM. Increasingly, as design is seen as an ac vity rather than the protected output of a profession, commerce is forcing changes in how design firms func on. As the en re design and construc on process is restructured, many design firms will evolve into new business models. During this transi on, they must recognize both their professional and business exposures to preserve their independence, meet their obliga ons as professionals, and minimize their financial jeopardy.

When design firms lead the process, they assume non-professional risks. But when they are subcontracted to a non-licensed designbuild enƟty, they oŌen become the targets of both professional and contractual claims.

One trend that perhaps is beyond the “emerging” stage but is likely to con nue to increase is the use of single-source designbuild contrac ng. Design-build is now o en managed by a contractor or developer. In the future, the design-build process is likely to be run by management consul ng firms, financial en es and consor ums that look at capital assets as one element of their service to a client. When design firms lead the process, they assume non-professional risks. But when they are subcontracted to a non-licensed design-build en ty, they o en become the targets of both professional and contractual claims.

When design firms take a subcontractor’s role, o en there is a “skip-over” mentality in which the ul mate client, such as the owner, agrees with the design-build en ty that any suspected deficiency in design must be the responsibility of the design firm. The jus fica on is that state licensing laws place the actual design responsibility on the professional. Thus the design-built en ty might agree without the design firm’s knowledge to assign the designbuilder’s rights to the client or to pursue jointly a recovery from the design firm.

Although all the par es in a design-build project delivery system comprising independent en es need to share a new perspec ve, the design elements in par cular need to be carefully managed. Design firms may find it difficult to maintain the integrity and public accountability that is associated with being licensed professionals.

One common feature of a project alliance contrac ng methodology such as integrated project delivery is a risk-sharing mentality. The sharing of risk is usually propor onately and contractually defined and ranges from pure alliance contrac ng in which every par cipa ng party’s assets are at risk to limited, or “impure” forms where only profits or stated assets might be jeopardized by a deficient result.

As integrated project delivery procedures evolve and client-driven efforts to share risk mature, project alliance en es will need to look closely at their business risks and at the scope and limita ons of current insurance coverages. Contractual commitments to share losses currently prevent the applicability of professional liability insurance coverage when internal problems arise. Most integrated project delivery arrangements are unclear on how third-party claims are to be addressed.

Current professional liability insurance coverage is defined through policy language and court decisions – which makes it difficult for insurers to respond effec vely to new forms of project delivery. But the Schinnerer and CNA program, which offers the AIA Commended Professional Liability Insurance Program to AIA members, is taking an industry leading posi on to develop insurance coverage that is responsive and will facilitate the evolu on of professional prac ce.

The professional risk— including basic design liability— oŌen becomes greater and spread among the enƟƟes forming the private part of the arrangement. partnerships. A public-private partnership is an arrangement between the governmental and commercial sectors to privately deliver a project or service that is tradi onally provided by the public sector. This extreme form of contrac ng-out by the government is based on the realiza on that private sector innova on, technological skill, financial capability, and management exper se can generate quality public infrastructure and services in an economically efficient manner.

This is especially true in crea ng and managing buildings and proper es.

The development of public-private partnerships is causing much concern among design firms, contractors, financial en es, and facility managers. Part of this concern is the unbundling of project risk in a way that creates challenges in understanding exposures and crea ng systems to manage and insure these exposures. Because each project arrangement is different, the risk profiles and resultant risk alloca ons differ. Every design and construc on endeavor has both project risk and professional or design risk. When a public-private partnership is formed, the project risk usually becomes more extensive but more manageable. The professional risk— including basic design liability— o en becomes greater and spread among the en es forming the private part of the arrangement. Expanded roles may introduce new risks such as mee ng fixed schedules and cost commitments, absorbing development and management costs, and facing reduced cash flow because the fee structures are o en set up as deferred payments made during opera on of the facili es.

Public-private partnerships increase business opportuni es in return for assuming new or expanded responsibili es and risks. In a more entrepreneurial capacity as a developer and operator, the private en ty may assume risks that the public en ty never had. Third-party liability—in many cases the same risks that do not exist for a public agency—becomes important as a risk for private en es.

While government agencies have limited tort exposure, private en es usually do not. A design firm involved with con nuing management or maintenance responsibili es may find that its exposure is not limited in amount or me.

Now more than ever, firms must be constantly aware of the legal and economic issues of prac ce. According to Schinnerer sta s cs on the frequency and severity of claims, both the likelihood of an allega on of negligence or of a non-professional claim for breach of a contract or warranty provision seem to be increasing in firms. Providing construc onrelated professional services to create a capital asset is a challenge because of the high stakes involved.

Every firm needs to be a keen observer of changes in professional prac ce and the vehicles for delivering those services to a shi ing market. Victor O. Book Review: Peter Rose: Houses

I remember vividly the first Peter Rose house I saw published. It was in the April, 1998 issue of Record Houses and I knew right where to find it today. When the issue came out I remember being capƟvated by that house, reading the text and scruƟnizing each photo, eyes darƟng back and forth across the pages, so inspired by the aƩenƟon to detail and elegance of materials.

The house is known as “Mountain House” in the new monograph, Peter Rose: Houses by William Morgan from Princeton Architectural Press, and it captures and holds my aƩenƟon right from the cover now as it did over a decade ago.

That was a year before I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and began work in a firm primarily focused on residenƟal architecture. Rafael Moneo begins the forward for Peter Rose: Houses by describing the complexity and idealism that the design of a single-family home demands. As an architect pracƟcing residenƟal architecture almost exclusively for over a decade, it is enviable to view a porƞolio so full of exquisite work.

Few of us will ever exhibit as much talent or dedicaƟon to our profession, and even less will have the opportunity. For that reason, I was especially moved by Rose’s humility in an acknowledgement to his clients: “These projects were designed and built for excepƟonal clients who provided me in each case with extraordinary sites, more than

adequate budgets, good taste, and thoughƞul conƟnuous collaboraƟon—in short every advantage I could have asked for.”

Peter Rose: Houses is organized simply with a forward by Rafael Moneo, preface by the Rose, and body by William Morgan, author, historian and scholar of New England architecture. It features five sensuous houses, and a somewhat superfluous, though equally elegant, dormitory building as an Appendix. Each house is given a brief descripƟon highlighƟng context, program, parƟ, and materials, but only in the

barest of detail. As with many architecture books, it’s the photographs that tell the story, and they are exquisite. Each displays a richness of material and texture, capturing the details that are so rigorously pursued and executed.

The houses are organized chronologically, but Rose maintains they also represent their—or his—development from the most vernacular with Mountain House to the most abstract, his second on Martha’s Vineyard, East House.

The text is light on architectural theory, and generally succinct, preferring instead to focus on the influences that inform Rose’s work, from childhood to present Ɵme. Most interesƟngly, many of these details are described by each of the contributors, including Rose, for a varied and mulƟ-layered depicƟon.

Rose was born and raised in Montreal and credits the region with much of his influence, including visits to the family’s summer house on Lake Memphremagog and his early pursuit of downhill ski racing. At “Magog,” the “simply sensible” family cabin on Memphremagog, Rose learned the power of orienƟng a house to the land, and with ski racing he learned to understand space and topography. “The intense experience of synchronizing the movement of body and mind with terrain, while flying through space and across surfaces that are constantly changing in texture, color, density, and contour…have played an important role in my development as a designer.”

In fact, it was the ski team that brought Rose to Yale, not architecture. But it was there that

Vincent Scully “brought buildings alive” for Rose, and where he learned from Moore, “to carefully look at, to see, and be thrilled by buildings.” Elements of the iconic Sea Ranch condominium are visible in Rose’s work, but the collected work in Houses assures that Rose was never mired in any stylisƟc pedagogy of his greatest influences. SƟll, a quote from The Place of Houses (Moore, Allen, Lyndon) suggests a kinship very much alive in this collecƟon: “A house is in delicate balance with its surroundings, and they with it.”

Morris extends the criƟcal lessons Rose gained from skiing to confidence, exhibited when Phyllis Lambert commissioned Rose, in the early years of his pracƟce to design “a landmark” with the Canadian Centre for Architecture. It was the successful compleƟon of the awardwinning CCA, described by Morris as “a near perfect insƟtuƟonal building,” that elevated Rose’s reputaƟon to internaƟonal acclaim.

Coincidentally, a divisive poliƟcal climate in Quebec and invitaƟon from Rafael Moneo, then chairman, brought Rose to Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where he has been an adjunct professor for nearly 20 years.

Rose describes the influence of his adopted northeast where “in the landscape of the northeast, one becomes parƟcularly aware of the passage of Ɵme: through the movement of the sun in a single day, the wide range of temperatures, textures, and colors of the four seasons, and especially the powerfully changing weather.” Each of these houses

For those unfamiliar with the Cambridge, Massachuse s-based Peter Rose, his architecture spans across scale, profile, and more than three decades of work. Though Peter Rose: Houses features only a handful of pieces from that accomplished body, it is a beguiling collec on to which any lover of architecture or houses will though ully connect.

Years ago I saw Maya Lin speaking about her just released monograph, Boundaries, for which she spent a great deal of me describing the size and he of her book. She was very conscious of the feel of her book in a reader’s hand. In fact, the ma e black book jacket features the simple tle floa ng above a wellmanicured hand cradling—not just holding—a stone. If there is a shortcoming to be found in Peter Rose: Houses, it is in the physicality of the book itself. The binding and jacketless cover appear as if they have been removed and displaced from a boxed collec on. The underlined tles feel unresolved and the bold, consistent font feels heavy. Inexplicably, the interior of the cover and back are lemon-yellow fields, void of the richness evident in each featured project. One could overlook these details in almost any other book, but alongside the purposeful composi ons of Rose’s work—a handrail cra ed from a single piece of steel at Mountain House photographed in a blanket of
