Derek Muscat works with the Theocy design collaboration and spends his time designing graphics for Line skis, Ride and Nidecker snowboards. Some may say he has a dream job and after speaking to him we’re sure he does… “When I was a kid I did a lot of skateboarding and snowboarding, I loved painting and drawing and I thought it would be really cool one day to work for a snowboard company as an in-house designer and that’s how it all started, working for a snowboard company 6 years ago. The job that launched my career was from a guy by the name of Trevor O’Neill who used to be the creative director at LaMar snowboards back in 1999. He actually gave me my first snowboard graphic project and I paid my way through school by turning all my work into projects for paying clients. I’m really fortunate to have a great clientele list and the work they feed me is just so amazing because they give me the freedom to do what I want so a lot of the projects have been the ultimate project. I love the freedom I have to create different graphics for companies like Line skis. For me I like the technology behind snowboards and skis as a lot of them ride differently. I know how I like to ride and for me I like to have subtle graphics, maybe a black top sheet with hidden graphics on it. I don’t think it’s all about how it looks as a rider, the performance is important. I’ve been snowboarding for 15 years now but I don’t ride on one of my own design boards because it just feels too weird. Sometimes for me if it’s a great riding
