DION NEW PORT

Lined up are some of the best skiers in the world. It is your job to judge them but just where do you start? Dion Newport gives us his perspective into what it’s like to be one of the world’s top ski judges.

We are continuously looking at improving the judging systems. We actively look for feedback from the athletes, as it is their sport and they should be the ones controlling its direction.

heated! When I’m in the role of head judge, I have on occasion not agreed with the panel, but if they are all in agreement then we go with their scores.

Do you ever find it hard to separate mark giving from personal emotion when the person you’re judging has a bad attitude behind the scenes?

Have you seen anyone recently that you think displays an outstanding talent that we should keep an eye out for?

I don’t think this is a problem, over the years the judging systems have become much more professional. For a lot of competitions the judges will only know the bib number about to start not the competitor’s name. Each panel has a Head Judge, who usually does not score. Their job is to ensure the panel judges’ scores are in and around the same, which eliminates a judge giving a biased, low score.

That is a hard one, every year there are new kids breaking onto the scene in both park and freeride. When you think you’ve seen it all, they push the limits further.

So, how did you become a ski judge? I’m a 31 year old New Zealander from a small surfing town called Napier which is in the north Island of New Zealand. I started skiing properly in 2000 and jumped straight into competitive skiing. I quickly saw the standard of judging on the New Zealand circuit was really hit or miss, which is frustrating for athletes. I decided to jump on to a few panels and it grew from there. How have you seen techniques evolve over your career? Both free ride and park events have developed into overall impression systems, which is essentially an overall score out of 10 or 100. In relation to park skiing, the emphasis has shifted from technique and difficulty to progression and execution. This has happened because a lot of the top riders are doing such similar tricks. Even though these tricks are extremely difficult and technical, it is a perfect landing or something unique that will separate the podium from the pack. In Freeride, the World Tour system uses an overall impression judging system, while the US tour uses a separated category system. The athlete is scored on choice of line, control, fluidity, technique and lastly tricks/airs. There used to be a category called “aggression” but it was difficult for the panel to judge consistently. Where is the line between strong, fast, daring skiing and crazy, dangerous skiing? We were concerned it would push athletes to ski too fast in areas of big exposure, which has led to fatal accidents in the past.

Can you give us a basic idea of what judges are looking for at a ski comp? For park events, the judges will reward runs where the features are linked together in a fluid manner (e.g. landing switch and then hitting the next feature switch). The tricks must be clean with well-executed grabs. Finishing further down the landings will score slightly higher, and progressive tricks will also score well. For free ride events, the judges are firstly looking at the line choice – fall line and linking features together without hesitation. The runs that are fast and hit good sized cliffs will be rewarded. Including a trick will always get the panel excited! What would your dream job be? Judging at Sochi 2014? I think I already have my dream job! Travelling the world to the most amazing ski spots and getting paid to do it! I recently got confirmed as a panel judge for the Olympics in Sochi. Of course it will be a highlight of my career. I am really looking forwarded to seeing how ski pipe and slope style are received by the wider winter sport community. I went to Sochi two years ago for a free ride event and I’m really looking forward to seeing the amount of infrastructure that has been put in place, it’s an awesome mountain. Do you ever fall out with the other members on your panel about decisions? I have not really ever fallen out with another judge but we definitely have debates and sometimes they get

In free ride, I think Sam Smoothy is really exciting at the moment and having just missed out on the title last year I think he is going to really be pushing it this year. Markus Eder has joined the tour and his combination of park skills and great skiing technique will be one to watch. Make sure to catch all the action on the live stream at freerideworldtour.com In park skiing, I think the Inspired crew (Henrik Harlow, B Dog etc) are taking it in a new and super styled direction. The top riders like Jossi Wells, Tom Wallisch and Gus Kenworthy (just to name a few) are all going to be trying to separate from the pack with Sochi approaching so I think the top-level park events are going to be incredible this year. What do you think the future holds for the world of skiing? The progression of park skiing over the last 10 years has been phenomenal. If you asked me in 2000 if a double cork 1080 (2 flips and 3 full rotations) was possible I would have fallen over laughing, now that is almost a standard trick! I think park crews will continue to build bigger features and the tricks will keep progressing. The US Freeskiing World Tour and the Freeride World Tour have combined this year, and so for the first time the best in the world are being brought together on one stage. Thanks Dion!

BRANDING A GENERATION

TAKEAWAYS €10

words by Chloe Hardy

In a slightly shocking start to this winter season, super snowboarding giants, Burton announced that they would be cutting back on a number of well known brands that they own including Foursquare, Analog and Special Blend because they weren’t making enough money. This came as a massive disappointment to many in the snowsports community, because who wants to hear, Burton lover or not, that a company that big is struggling to keep its smaller assets afloat? Since I started skiing in 2007 I’ve always heard a lot of controversial opinions on Burton, with many riders viewing the company as the snowboarding equivalent of Greenday; they were good, then they got big and sold out. But what many people overlook is the fact that Burton was and still is a family run business, who used the profits of their success to invest in these smaller companies and keep the focus on snowboarding and great gear as opposed to seeing them bought by faceless corporations. And for some brands it’s not the end of the line, with companies still selling in areas that they profit to give them a chance to get back on their feet. For example you can still get Gravis

shoes in Japan and Analog outerwear is still widely available at the sacrifice of the streetwear. So who would think with all these cutbacks and talk of money loss that even smaller, local, one man brands would be thriving in ski towns throughout the world? The tiny town of Wanaka in New Zealand is home to Mons Royale thermals and growing companies Bandit Bandanas and Capital clothing, which are starting to make their way over here and to the US. Closer to home, Morzine has been the starting point for a few well-known brands such as AMC Development and more recently Rubix Kangaroo and Misguided Fools. Over the past few years their popularity has spread throughout the Alps and beyond, meaning AMC’s Alli Loveday has been able to give up his day job and run the company full time. But what is it that makes these little brands so popular? For starters, all sell essentials like hoodies, hats, tee shirts and sunglasses at an affordable price, so whether you’re here for the season or on holiday, you’ll have some money spare for other fundamentals

ON S E RV E79 E R E PLEA S4 50 79 66 0 like beer and pizza. Secondly, all the gear is designed by riders for riders, with handy extras like thumbholes to stop you getting snow up your arms! Furthermore, skiing and snowboarding has become a lifestyle subculture and one in which individuality is very important which makes it the perfect environment for smaller companies to thrive. After all, who wouldn’t want to rep a hoody or a tee shirt that their friend, or a friend of a friend had designed and made? Particularly when you can go home and know that no one else will have the same one. This is the way that many companies start out, whether they become huge like Burton or stay local. The common goal is to make good quality gear so people can feel good, look good and have as much fun as possible. And that’s what it’s all about right? N I A V L SY E D R A COCH PHER PHOTOGRA

I appreciate lots of different photographic subjects. Freestyle sports like skiing, snowboarding, BMX and mountain bike provide amazing photographic opportunities. But I also appreciate nature - my mum and grandmother love flowers, there are around 500-600 different species of flowers in their gardens, so I have choices! At the end of the 2008/09 winter season, Arnaud Kugener organised an event with lots of international and national freeskiers in Chatel during the “3 Style Days”. The photo and video shooting took place over several days and there was a photo shoot contest. I won the contest despite being the only amateur photographer then I decided to turn photography from a hobby into a career. Living in the Portes du Soleil is amazing for providing photo opportunities. My three main summer events are the Chatel Mountain Style, the Pass'Portes du Soleil and the IXS European Downhill Cup. During the winter I shoot and follow several young riders to help them with their career and to try and find them sponsors. For example, for the last year and a half I have followed two brothers aged 9 and 11. The best thing about being a photographer has to be working for yourself, so you can work when you want and often at home (during the postproduction). You also get to travel and meet different people. The worst thing is that your career is often based purely on having the right connections and knowing the right people, which can be really difficult but you just have to be persistent. Having good equipment helps enormously to capture a clean and sharp picture but if you have a creative spirit with just an amateur

camera - even a mobile phone can be enough. An expensive camera will not take the shot itself, you must know how to use it if you want to get the really great shots. Changes and improvements to photographic equipment are so progressive and are changing every year so you have to stay ahead of the game to stay a part of it. For me, the most important pieces of equipment are the lenses. If you have a quality lens and you know how to use it then a quality image will follow. Sylvain’s top tips:

Never put your subject in the centre of the frame, put it to one side (there is a gimmick: cut your frame by three parts in vertical and horizontal and put your subject at the intersection of these lines). The only subject this doesn’t really work for is architecture when symmetry usually works well. Prepare the focus on the point you want take in automatic, when it’s good, put it in manual and then autofocus. The autofocus should not change from the correct focus and then you can then take a great photo. If you want to shoot sports or other moving subjects, the setting must be made with the speed of the shot in mind (choose for example two milliseconds instead of 2 seconds). The choice of the lens is important too, a good lens helps a lot both for a good photo and for creativity. For me, I use mainly fisheyes for creativity and a zoom lens for the best quality. Try and try and try… sometimes you discover by mistake how to create a great shot.

Penguins captain

SKI RENTALS

Mike Brodin caught up with Yodel to tell us all about his life and career as Captain of our very own Penguin’s ice hockey team. “I started playing hockey when I was 3 years old, my brother played and I wanted be like him. My "professional" hockey career began when I started playing for Reims when I was 17. This is now my 6th season playing for Morzine and I absolutely love it.

I don’t think I ever really agitate the opposition, I think that everyone understands it is part of the game. There may be some guys that think it is personal but what happens on the ice, stays on the ice. I never go too far, it’s just part of the game, nothing is ever personal...

I’ve been Captain of the team for four years now. For the first three years I was chosen by a team vote but this season the coach decided himself to keep me in that role. I’m very proud of being the Penguin’s Captain and trying to be a good one.

If I had to choose five words to sum up my passion they would be: team spirit, solidarity, friendship, work and love.

I think the team chooses me as their Captain because I’m always talking in the locker room trying to motivate everyone in the team. I’m trying to be a leader on the ice and through my words. After a game it is really difficult for me to wind down; it’s impossible to get to sleep quickly after a game because my body is still so pumped. I don’t usually get to sleep until 4 or 5 hours after the game and before that I just spend the time hoping to fall asleep earlier than that! I don’t think we can really say we are more competitive against one team than another. This season we really do have a great team that can beat anyone but we need to work hard and be focused to get the results. We can’t just hope it will always be a positive result.

I really love the fact that we are playing in a ski resort but I don’t often go up the mountain. I go up for a coffee with friends but even when I go skiing, it’s never for more than a few hours and always pretty laidback.

ONESIE OF THE MONTH Only the truly too cool for school can wear their headband at such a nonchalant angle. A multi-coloured one at that! The tangerine hues of this beauty are wondrous and only accentuated by the mismatched royal blue tones. Triangular, faux knee and elbow patches? Usually such patches are saved for an academic, it must be that this image is genuinely teaching us something about retro ski fashion… And don’t think we are missing the hot pink retro-style skis that finish of this tri-factor of horrific colour clashing. If this doesn’t gain some truly envious and truly terrified glances up on the mountain, I’ll eat my multi-coloured woolly headband.

www.retro-rentals.eu

Ingredients: Spoonful of Ginger Marmalade 20ml Fresh Lemon Juice 50ml Pineapple Juice 8 Mint leaves 5ml Sugar 50ml Spiced Rum (Bacardi OakHeart if possible) We serve the Marma-lady in a jam jar so if you have one it will add to the authenticity! Add the ingredients in the order listed above. You will need the lemon and pineapple juice to break down the marmalade. Add some crushed ice and shake (or stir!) it all together. To garnish add another couple of mint leaves. Delicious.

WINTER

ACTIVITIES There’s no shame in admitting you need a break from skiing or snowboarding…we’ve all been there! The best thing about the mountains is that there is a massive range of other activities you can enjoy. Here are a few of our favourites...

Snow Shoeing

Night Sledging

Snow shoeing is an amazing way to enjoy the mountains by appreciating the nature in a calm and serene way. It can provide the perfect break for your legs from skiing and boarding while still getting out and inhaling the beauty of the area. We recommend you use a guide to fully enjoy the experience and we think Indie is a great choice.

If you’re looking to extend your day beyond the opening hours of the lifts, why not head out for some night sledging? It is the perfect group/family activity and gives you the opportunity to witness the beautiful snow by moonlight. It’s probably a good idea to get a guide if you want to avoid the piste bashers by night!

Husky Rides

Parapenting

Dashing through the snow, in a one-husky open sleigh…Ok so there may be more than one way to pull a sleigh but we wholly recommend huskies. The traditional cry of ‘moosh moosh’ (derived from the French word ‘marche’ meaning to walk) will only add to the entertainment of gliding along the snow pulled by these beautiful dogs.

Parapenting or paragliding is an increasingly popular activity in the area probably owing to the fact that it was invented nearby in Meiussy. From take-off, it is possible to climb to well over 1000m and it gives a unique and stunning birds-eye view of the world below. What better way to view this beautiful area?

Ski-dooing Sliding around on a snowmobile on a 20km long private path is the perfect buzz at the end of the day. You can be a passenger from the age of 10 but must be over 18 to drive and rides are every hour from 5.30pm until 10.30pm. A must for speed junkies, motor enthusiasts and anyone looking for that something different on their holiday. Contact: avoscoot@orange.fr

MORZINE

Words by Tazz Gault

Imagine yourself anywhere in between 1966 and 1972, with a gleamingly tanned face in technicolour stretch pants gliding across the slopes of your favourite ski resort. These decades, known to any retro ski lover, carried with them the height of ski fashion. It was up to women to bring with them an attractive and sexy appeal to the slopes, and for men to show their skills, performing tricks on the blues and smashing the blacks. Wool became an after thought, as modern synthetics took charge in its light but warm way. Without a pair of stretch pants painted onto your skin, your ski attire would not only be considered out dated, but you would be frowned on for your lack of knowledge. In some respects, a white blanket of snow had replaced the red carpet and skis were the new high heels and leather brogues of the winter catwalk – you would not dream of wearing the same fur anorak two days in a row. The stylish outfits screamed sex appeal, as promotional films sold the skiing experience as one full of romance and flirtation as a guaranteed attribute, as confirmed as the fact that snow would fall. The retro glow could be seen with the sporadic alpine ‘christmas’ jumper sneaking out occasionally,

but was favoured by the younger of the ski lovers. Colours were bright and stood strong against their white backdrop, with each skier remaining dedicated to a colour-coordinated outfit. Vibrant reds, royal blues and jade greens were just some common sights, peppered with detailing to die for. Designers were in full swing where ski fashion was concerned, with the likes of Bogner, Courreges, Fila and Descente showing the high street what was desired. The winter break that so many looked forward to also took hold of the home life wardrobe. Quilted nylon ski jackets with removable sleeves from visible zip detailing transformed itself into a vest, making AW and SS collide into one. An alliteration seemed to form over these retro years for want of a better way to explain: ski, snow, style and sex.

Jono

Wood Can you take some time to tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from? My name is Jono Wood, I'm a Libra from just outside of London. I have blue eyes and when I'm not drawing I like to travel, ride, surf and take long walks on the beach. Hahaha there you go, it's like a 'Lonely Hearts' extract. Well, it was a bit of a Blind Date question! How would you describe your work? I guess it is bold, clean illustration and graphic design. It's pretty hard to explain. What job do you consider launched your career? Hmm, again that's a tough one but I would probably say the Gravis ranges. They helped get my work and name out to a global audience. It was and still is very strange to see my own work when I’m out in stores or around cities or mountains but that was certainly the first time I felt that. You are involved with some great companies. Can you tell us who they are and how you ended up working with them? Right now I am involved mainly within the action sports industry and I'm very happy to say I have worked with some of the best most influential companies out there in surfing, skating and snowboarding including Gravis, Burton, Nike, Channel Islands, Habitat and Capita. But it hasn't always been plain sailing, there has been a lot of hard graft and long hours to get where I am today. I've worked my way up through the ranks over many years working on small projects to build up a broad portfolio, which is very important before approaching larger brands. Presentation is everything. You have some amazing illustrations, have you studied at all? If so where and what did you study? Yeah, I went down the traditional path of art schooling, from GCSEs to A-levels, a foundation in art and design and then on to an animation degree. It was here that I learnt all the fundamentals and techniques I needed. But when it came to developing my own personal style that certainly came from my

passion for drawing. I was never without a pen or pencil in my hand as far back as I can remember and it was always a dream to make something of it. When I was told during my A-levels that there was no place for my particular style in the classroom, which only spurred me on further to get my work out there. What do you consider your biggest inspirations to be? I know this probably sounds corny but my inspirations don't really come from looking at other artists although there are so many amazing people out there that I love to see. My inspirations come from people, places I've visited, my mood, friends, relationships and my environment. I like to feed off of that and put that into my work. I'll be honest, sometimes I totally forget other people are going to see my work. If you could choose one piece of your work to save from a burning building which one would it be?

My career started many years ago when I was combining both my art and my snowboard career. There was a lot of hard work combined with presentation as well as a large amount of networking and I don't mean social networking. A lot of shaking hands, meeting and greeting. Making time to go to trade shows for example. You paint yourself in a much better light if you take time to meet people in person rather than through email. So I used that to build on and worked my way up taking on clients. I am very humbled and honoured that people gave me the opportunities along the way making sure I did every job to the best of my ability. What are you working on at the moment? Due to the nature of the industry and the process it takes from design and development to trade shows, to manufacturing, shipping and so on until it reaches the slopes... I am already working on 2015. I’m living in the future!

Wow, that’s a tough one. There are a lot of pieces I'm stoked on. It's strange to explain but I like to touch and hold everything I've done. Like when I receive a series of skate decks in the post I can see where all my hours have gone into an object rather than buying an object with money that’s been made from where all my hours have gone. Does that make any sense? It's very rewarding. Hmmm. I'd probably grab a series of one off skateboards I did for friends.

What would be your dream project?

Can you explain the highlights of your career and how you have progressed to where you are now?

I come back year after year probably because of both the variety of the terrain here and friends. I feel very much

Jono

Wood

I think working for Capita is my dream job. It was what I had always set my sights on, designing for a snowboard brand. I think there is nothing more rewarding than seeing my friends riding around on something that I designed and I get to use it too.

Morzine is part of me, and as I write this I am just about to pack my bags after probably the best New Year’s vacation I have ever had. Sharing it with close friends and family, blue skies and great conditions. You can't say fairer than that. Do you ride products that you have designed? And how does that make you feel? Yeah I ride the boards I design which is the most rewarding experience but I'm not the type of person to shout about it. It's just awesome to be part of the process and give something back to snowboarding after everything it has given to me throughout my career as a rider.

Can you give any advice to people wishing to break into a freelance career in designing board graphics? Like snowboarding, do it because you love it. If you are doing it for some other reason then it isn't for you. There will be many nights when you find yourself at your desk at 3am trying to hit deadlines so if you aren't doing it for the love that will break you. That said it is very rewarding. My biggest piece of advice is presentation, presentation, presentation. A good portfolio is key. Best of luck!

Howard Sellers is the Chef at Chalet Fourmiliere, kindly he shared with Yodel one of the many beautiful dishes he prepares for the chalet guests: The Ultimate Surf ‘n’ Turf.

Ingredients: Whole Fillet of Beef 2 Large Tiger Prawns or Lobster Tails 1 Bunch of Basil 100g Softened Butter 6 Serrano Ham Slices 4 Garlic Cloves Pinch of Saffron Mayonnaise 1 Red Chilli 1 Bunch Chives 8 Sweet Potatoes 1 Lemon Rocket (to serve) (Good Quality String) Firstly, to prepare the beef. Remove the chain, tail end and all sinew from the fillet. Be careful not to discard the marbled fats from the fillet as these will add stunning flavor. Sinew can be recognised as being shiny and tough as opposed to dull and softer, which is the fat! Once all trimmed you should be left with a cylindrical single piece of beef. Peel the prawns and skewer from tail to head and poach in salted, lemon water. When cooked, remove and leave to cool. Lay out 6 slices of Serrano ham and cover with basil leaves. Place the prawns on top and tightly roll up. Cut the beef horizontally, three quarters of the way through and butterfly. Tenderise the beef with a meat hammer until it is a rectangle. To the butter add a small

handful of basil and chives along with two cloves of minced garlic. Generously spread the herbed butter over the beef. Place the prawn roll a quarter of the way up the beef rectangle and tightly roll. From the centre of the beef roll, tie it up with string until you are happy it’s secure. In a very hot roasting tray, sear and season the beef generously and roast for 30-40 minutes until the core is at 48°C. Leave to rest for a further 15 minutes while covered in foil, carefully remove the string and cut the roll into 8 oz portions. For the sweet potatoes, cut them into wedges and deep fry in 140°C oil until soft. Remove from the fryer and increase the heat to 180°C. Deep fry for a further 3-4 minutes until crisp. I like to drizzle them with truffle oil for an added treat. For the saffron aioli: Soak the saffron in 10ml of boiled water for 10 minutes and mince two cloves of garlic. Take garlic, chopped basil and chives, diced chilli, lemon juice and zest, soaked saffron and bind all together with mayonnaise until at your desired strength. To Serve: Swipe some saffron aioli on the plate, ‘jenga’ the sweet potatoes into a stack adding a ball of rocket in the centre and gently place the surf and turf steak on top. Voila!

SKI REVIEW SALOMON BBR 8.9 The Salomon BBR has been popular on the mountain ever since its innovative new shape was released 2 years ago. The 2013 8.9 builds on this ski’s excellent reputation by producing a more progressive side-cut creating excellent edge hold.

Few words

The skis have a wood core from tip to tail ensuring great stability on snow along with a powerful rebound. The design allows these skis to both float in powder while also carving down the slope, each with equal style making them the perfect all-rounder to flit between the two. If you have not tried these innovative skis you should, they are fantastic. www.doorstepskis.com

Not just your usual ski flick; Few Words takes more of a documentary perspective and focuses solely on one legendary skier; Candide Thovex. The Quiksilver film takes a look into the life and accomplishments of the French professional skier. While weaving together interviews and historical footage, the crew have also followed Candide for the last two years all over the world and the result is some truly stunning cinematography. That is alongside some steep and scary camera angles that could make even the hardiest skier’s hair stand on end.

Candide’s impressive, varied career is fascinating and once you team that with the photographic skills displayed in Few Words, the cinematic results are outstanding. Just watch it.
