Award ceremony: State of Salzburg media art grant 2024

”Connections don‘t really have to exist, but without them everything would fall apart.“ Die Hauptstadt, Robert Menasse

Salt used to be the BLOOD and bread of Hallein and Salzburg. Schmiede happens to happen in a 19th century salt refinery on an island in the alps. Annually, since 2003, the building is electrified and pulsingly brought to life by the Smiths - the family and participants of Schmiede. Their ideas, openness and actions make Schmiede the playground of ideas. Schmiede is a temporary safe space and island, where the Smiths can develop their ideas and share them with their peers. The process is open, very basic, light and mostly autonomous. During Schmiede we build and test prototypes, skribble and harvest feedback, learn from failures, move forward, get sucked into others’ ideas, discuss emerging topics and teach each other in many ways. What makes Schmiede special is that there are no masters and the program is not curated, but is derived and composed from the ideas and motivations of the Smiths. Schmiede is as unique as it is hopeful. We don‘t want to determine or judge, we want to enable and grow, together, while having fun. We want our ideas to play and connections to flow. Every year we have trusted it all to come together, and it did. Application for Schmiede is open to everyone and ends on May 31.

In the dawn of our third decade it feels appropriate to talk about tradition and the future. BLOOD is a proven medium to build trust and project misunderstandings. So what is the BLOOD that holds us together? The Smiths are not BLOOD related, however we feel a strong family-like bond that was built in our time spent together and the stories we share. In the past twenty years, many origin stories were coined in Hallein and flowed into the world, some to be dragged back by the tide and reasons. Around 2.000 Smiths have participated, many repeatedly over many years, but half of the Smiths of 2023 are new to the island. If all this was too abstract I full heartedly invite you to visit us. The flows of ideas and projects are best understood in person. We are happy and open to share. There is a closed workshop part to Schmiede but all the events in this program are open to the public. Like BLOOD, ideas need to flow to find purpose.

The night with the most lights and entertainment will be the Schmiede Workshow - Friday September 22. 2023 | 19:00 | Pernerinsel | Hallein

See you in Hallein ruediger

Exhibition opening: Textile and Sound

In their exhibition, Gertrud Fischbacher and Marius Schebella present results and works that were created as part of their FWF PEEK research project „Nexus of Textile and Sound“. Smart textiles are used as interfaces for clothing and architectural objects. With the help of sensors and microprocessors, interactions with fabrics and other textile materials are used to link them to sound properties and musical parameters. The research focused on the transfer of material qualities and properties between textiles and sound. textileandsound.org

Hypha - interactive experience

Experience immersive worlds of sounds and colors in two interactive rooms. Via motion tracking you can interact with visuals, sounds and the person on the other side. Center of the visual concept is a gigantic neural, root like, network. Hypha is the long filamentous branches of fungi that rip through living and dead organisms to sustain nourishment. Two people at a time can experience hypha: one in VR mode, one in an actual room with projections and 8-channel-sound.

Visitors shall come in pairs and must be registered via Iist: office@schmiedehallein.com

Dialogues: Smith Labs

/ Festspielbühne

Lab Leaders introduce themselves, their focus, what they offer and search. Labs are focus points and information nodes organized by Smiths.

16:00

- MEME WAR LAB™

The third edition of Meme War LAB™ maintains its forward-thinking approach, most importantly seeking the pursuit of F.U.N. (Finally Understanding Nothing). Incorporating state-of-the-art technologies and rejecting contemporary political hopes and dreams, Meme War LAB™ is highly likely to create a unique fusion of old and new comrades. We are dissatisfied by existing norms and strive to define a new affiliated union: Schmiede Gewerkschaft. Spreading the memes of production.

Lab leaders: Eva, Johannes, Stephan

16:20

- adhoc

Bring the kids: the adhocLAB is a family friendly creative workspace hosted by the adhocrates collective and friends. Each year the mixed group of all ages comes up with an unique project, combining the possibilities of the Schmiede as location with found/reclaimed objects to create objects or installations. Most important: the kids are on eye-level with all other participants and have equal idea opportunity. This way everyone can experiment with new materials and gets to learn new skills.

Lab leades: Kathi Macheiner, Lilo Krebernik, Mac Krebernik adhocrates.net

16:40

- Textile and Sound

For the fourth time Textile and Sound Lab will return to Schmiede. Textile materials and textile practices are linked to sounds and music. We work on reactive and interactive interfaces and on spatial sculptures as well as on concepts to correlate and connect the two disciplines. How can interfaces and instruments be built from fabric or how can textile materials be translated into sounds? We are open to experiments and ideas of all kinds as a contact and/or cooperation partner. Interfaces are smart textiles, sensors, contact microphones, motors or muscle wires. We work with spatial and architectural concepts on the topics of loops, membranes and transparency. We are searching a productive exchange.

Lab leaders: Gertrud Fischbacher, Marius Schebella textileandsound.org | fwf.ac.at | fh-salzburg.ac.at | moz.ac.at

17:00 - feral

Networked Effects I: What gives? - The ferallab will initiate something new and sustainable. We will be seeking to uncover concepts of sustainability in the art, science and technology context. We will attempt to go beyond purely environmental or economic feasibility and dive deeper into the question: What are the implications of our actions? How can we connect cause and consequence without losing hope? Our focus is to sustain joy and hence our willingness and ability for action. This first of three ferallab iterations will push for spontaneous collaborative processes and initiate a fact finding mission. We will harvest ideas, information and solutions in order to bring them together and produce a perspective.

Lab leaders: Kristina Maurer, Laura Welzenbach, Karla Spiluttini rewildingcultures.net

17:20

- Experimental Science Visualization

Modern science is becoming increasingly difficult to understand for the general public. Many relevant activities are performed in scales and intervals that we cannot perceive with the naked eye. The understanding for people who are no experts in the respective field is supported by the visualization of these hidden processes. An attractive design is essential for comprehensibility. Data visualization is the process of using visual elements such as charts, graphs and maps to represent data. It translates complex, large, numeric data into a visual representation making it easier to digest. The Experimental Science Visualization Lab focuses on making these invisible scientific phenomena visible and comprehensible.

Lab leaders: Martina R. Fröschl, Peter Mindek, Mehrta Shirzadian scivizlab.com | pixelvienna.com | martinafroeschl.com | nanographics.at

17:40

- Sound Accomplices

We investigate and pursued the production of sounds: The workshop “Sonic Consciousness” invites participants to play around with and experience the meaning of music and sound from several perspectives. Attendees are free to play with processes, described by Daniel Stern in the framework of “tacit knowledge of relationships” and to perceive how music can help stimulating and communicating tacit knowledge. Kristina Gorke (classically trained mezzo-soprano/performance artist/art historian) presents several findings of her research in possibilities of the interaction between the human voice and technology.

Lab leaders: Kristina Gorke, Bernd Gutmannsbauer, Markus Pöchinger facebook.com/accomplicesverein

18:00

- Studio 3

Eight is a magic number. We are happy to see Studio 3 return again and again to bring interaction design from every direction. Throughout the year, Studio 3 is a venue and also a collective to research, create, share, inspire, debate, educate, think and perform with the aim of utilizing and promoting artistic practices as a vehicle of human-computer interaction research. In September, a large part of Studio 3 will move to the Schmiede and enjoy inspiration and interaction as well as work in a different guise with unusual approaches and alternative exits. Studio 3 is part of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Salzburg.

Dialogue: The party formally known as Bier (German)

On the freedom of art, artistic intervention and creative activism in uncertain times. What must, may, should art and what not in a time when paradigms are shifting. Who has the authority to interpret, what has the right to do and why are we all so polarized? Paul Estrela, co-founder of the Schmiede Hallein, wanted to know more about just that. During the Salzburg state elections of 2023 he saw an opportunity to stress test a system. He founded the Salzburg Beer Party and pretended to run for election. The national beer party did not disappoint. An intervention that finally found its way in front of the judge. Paul wants to discuss his experiences and surprises and spans an arc from Valie Export to Klimakleber:innen. The guest list is in progress and will be announced after the court situation is sattled.
