A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & BOARD CHAIR

Dear YMCA Friends and Family,

As we reflect on the past year of strengthening communities across San Bernardino County, we are proud of the impact we’ve made, the innovation we’ve embraced, and the growth we’ve experienced. At the same time, we are far from satisfied—we are energized and motivated to continue moving forward, deepening our commitment to meet community needs in even greater ways.

One of the year’s major milestones was the completion of our 2025andBeyondStrategicDirection. This new strategic plan was shaped by listening to voices beyond our walls —gathering insights from the community to better understand how they perceive and experience their YMCA. This plan will serve as our North Star over the next 2–3 years, guiding us through five strategic priorities:

• Optimizing programs and operations

• Establishing a strong and consistent brand identity

• Creating a culture of growth and innovation

• Expanding philanthropic efforts

• Strengthening the capacity of our local branches

As these strategies are implemented across our branches, the goals and actions may look different in each community to reflect their unique needs. However, we remain united in our strategic focus and dedicated to building on our foundation to deepen our impact in the years ahead. We are continually inspired by the servant leadership of our front line and leadership staff, the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, and the generous spirit that defines this incredible community.

Thank you for your continued support, your boundless generosity, and your belief in our mission. Together, we are building stronger communities and making life-changing miracles happen—one individual at a time.

KEEPING FAMILIES TOGETHER

At YMCA Preschool University, every child—and every family—belongs. For Magaly, a single mother working full-time, finding a safe, nurturing place for her children was essential. She chose the Y because the hours fit her work schedule, the program provided the academic environment she valued as a University of Redlands alumna, and she knew her children, Thanos (4) and Anastasia (2), would thrive.

“I will forever be grateful. The Y has given us more than childcare, it’s given us a safe and nurturing community.”

But when unexpected financial hardships hit, Magaly faced an impossible choice—separating her children and sending Anastasia to live with relatives so she could keep working. The thought broke her heart. That’s when she reached out to the Y.

Magaly was met with empathy and compassion. The Preschool University director listened with understanding and worked to find a solution. Through financial assistance, Magaly could keep Thanos and Anastasia together, learning, playing, and growing in a safe, loving environment. Studies show that children who attended Preschool graduated high school at a rate that is 22 percentage points higher than those who did not.*

Today, Magaly feels less stress and more joy. “The financial aid helped my family stay together, focus on education, and build our future,” she shares. Her children’s days are filled with arts and crafts, nutritious meals, and caring teachers who treat them like family.

With the burden of financial worry eased, Magaly is present for her kids and looking ahead—considering enrolling them in the Y’s sports programs next month.

“I will forever be grateful,” she says. “The Y has given us more than childcare—it’s given us a community.”

At the Y, we don’t just care for children, We keep families together.

DIRECT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE*

The YMCA Annual Campaign is a fundraising effort led by volunteers to raise essential funds each year for our programs and services. Thanks to the generous support of more than 1,320 donors last year, the Y is able to ensure every child, individual, and family has the opportunity to take part in our programs — regardless of their financial circumstances. This Campaign helps provide direct financial assistance in programs like membership, camp and childcare, circus and youth sports and aquatics, allowing the YMCA to fulfill our mission of ensuring access for all.

MAKING FAMILIES STRONGER

For the Ochoa family, the San Bernardino Family YMCA has been more than a place to exercise; it’s been a place to connect, grow, and make memories together. They first learned about the Y through the EXL program in the San Bernardino City Unified School District, then discovered a world of activities perfect for their daughters, Miah (9) and Aria (7).

From karate and gymnastics to swimming, Day Camps, and community events, the Y has given the girls opportunities to learn new skills, make friends, and build confidence. Miah is gaining self-defense skills and discipline through karate, while Aria is developing strength, flexibility, and lasting friendships in gymnastics.

“The Y has brought the whole family closer. Dad and Miah have karate and Mom and Dad enjoy fitness classes together thanks to Kid’s Club.”

Kid to Camp campaign, they were able to enjoy a week up in the mountains at Camp Edwards doing archery, swimming and nights by the campfire.

“They love swimming all the time and couldn’t wait to bring home and share with us all crafts they made while up at Camp” said Adrian, Dad to the girls.

The Y has brought the whole family closer. Dad and Miah have advanced together in karate, something they had never experienced before. Mom and Dad enjoy fitness classes, made easier by the Kid’s Club, included in their membership. Kid’s Club allows parents to drop off their children while they get in a good workout or just to enjoy some relaxation time by the pool.

Without the Y, childcare during school breaks and affordable extracurricular activities would be much harder to find. Instead, they’ve found a safe, fun, and welcoming community that offers more than they ever imagined. “We are grateful to have a Y in our community,” Adrian shares, and the Y is grateful to have them.

FINDING CONFIDENCE ONE STROKE AT A TIME

At the Y, we believe every child deserves to feel safe and supported, especially when facing something new - like being a part of our Safety Around Water (SAW) Program, where we teach essential water safety skills. These skills not only open up a world of possibilities for kids to explore their curiosity safely, but also prevent drowning, which is the second leading cause of death in children ages 5-14.*

Mika was nervous about getting into the water. Sitting on the pool’s second step, her face showed how worried she felt. When it was her turn, she froze, afraid to leave the safety of the stairs. With patience and reassurance, the instructor promised never to let go. Gently guiding her into the water, they encouraged Mika to imagine she was lying back, looking at the stars in the nighttime sky. For three brave seconds, Mika floated on her back and with a little help, she swam back to the stairs, and the biggest smile lit up her face. In that moment, she wasn’t just learning to swim; she discovered her own courage.

At the Y, moments like Mika’s remind us of our mission — helping kids feel safe, supported, and proud of themselves, one small victory at a time.

SAFETY AROUND WATER PROGRAM

As part of the Y’s commitment to reduce drowning rates and keep kids safe in and around the water, the YMCA of the East Valley provides free life-saving water safety lessons to children in our communities at our Redlands, Highland, and San Bernardino branches, with an emphasis on reaching at-risk children in underserved communities.

AROUND THE YMCA OF THE EAST VALLEY

At the Y, we believe in supporting the whole person and the whole family. Angelica’s son, who has an intellectual disability, has thrived here through his love of exercise, sports, Hoopshots, and swimming with Special Olympics. But our support didn’t stop at the gym. When his mom faced the complex conservatorship process, our legal aid team stepped in—answering questions, guiding her through paperwork, and making each step smoother. At the Y, we’re more than a place to play, we’re a community that stands beside you.

THRIVING AT THE Y

After a sudden diagnosis of life-threatening liver cirrhosis, Mike faced countless hospital visits, time in the ICU, and ultimately a liver transplant. His recovery was long and difficult, but through it all, he discovered an unexpected source of strength: the Y’s Circus program.

Even while in the hospital, Mike juggled to keep his spirits up. Once strong enough, he poured his energy into Circus. He taught unicycling, juggling, and stilts, and sharing his love of performing with kids. Circus became more than an activity; it was a lifeline. It gave Mike something to work toward, a reason to smile, and a place to belong.

Today, Mike continues his journey of strength and health, working out at the Y in Redlands and inspiring others with his story. The Y didn’t just give him a place to heal—it gave him a community, a purpose, and a reason to keep going.
