I started smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs at a very young age. When I was 16, it turned into a serious addiction and my life was a nightmare. My relatives sent me to a Christian center for rehabilitation where I heard about Christ, studied the Word, and listened to worship. After rehab, I was given the opportunity to serve at Young Life Capernaum camp for children with special needs. That was my first introduction to Young Life and at camp I made a firm decision to dedicate my life to the service of God. I live in a small village where I have started a new Young Life team and dream of further developing this region. As a Developing Global Leaders scholarship recipient, I am studying at a theological seminary. Because I live in a predominately Muslim country, I need a diploma to officially become a church pastor. I met Jesus after losing my dad. It was my most vulnerable moment where I came to even wonder if God existed. I struggled how to calm the war in my head and all my anger. It was at that moment when a friend invited me to a bonfire with some guys from a ministry called Young Life. In my desperation to get out and not stay locked in my room, I decided to go. When I arrived, they welcomed me with joy and I was amazed at how they knew my name and talked to me. When everyone started singing around the bonfire, it was like all the weight fell off me and I felt God’s presence like never before. Later I went to Young Life camp where I decided to follow Jesus and leave all that weight and my life of addictions. I live with my mother and my twin brother in the small community of Granada. We are a very close family. As a DGL student, I’m studying international business. I was born of a Muslim father and a Christian mother. I was raised as a Muslim and learned all the ways of the religion; I used to sneak to go visit my mum and spend time with her. When my dad found out about this, I was sent to live with my mother. My dad cut all the ties that I had with him and I solely depended on my mother for everything. I dedicated my time to studying the word of God and participating in church activities. It is through the daily communion with Christ that the burden of my father’s rejection was lifted and I was able to forgive him. My name is Gloria and I live with my aunt and uncle, cousins and siblings. My mum was a peasant and she struggled to pay for our basic needs and schooling, but my uncle took us into his home to help pay for our school fees. In high school, I lost my mother; l was broken. I couldn't imagine losing my mother on top of all of the suffering I had endured. Life without biological parents is unbearable at times, even when you have guidance. My mother raised me as a single mom and things were not easy for us. I had no hope for a future education after high school. I used to hold onto bitterness against my father because he abandoned us, but through the Young Life ministry, I was moved to ask God to help me forgive him. God has now given me love for others, including my father. As a recipient of the Developing Global Leaders scholarship, I am studying procurement and supply chain management at the University for Development Studies in Nyakpala, Ghana. "Solo" is a faithful young man from Mali. Orphaned from a young age, he and his three younger brothers were cared for by their grandparents until he was given the opportunity to live and go to school at a mentor’s orphanage and then adopted. Solo accepted Jesus while living under the care of his adopted mother. Grateful for what his mother did for him, he shares, “I want to be the person by whom God exercises his justice of love towards the voiceless and powerless people in my community.” Now a Developing Global Leader he shares, “I want to be an example to others of a man of God and help my community flourish.”

My name is Rose and I come from a Muslim family. I am the second born of eight children and our parents separated when I was young. For as long as I can remember, I have suffered from a skin rash and can’t find the right medical help to cure it. One day I met a Young Life leader who invited me to club. At first, my family did not want me to go, but they finally came to accept it and I managed to go to camp. When I was 16 I attended my first Young Life camp where I felt an atmosphere like never before. Everyone was so happy and showed love towards each other despite coming from different backgrounds. I heard the Word in a way I never thought was possible. The leaders shared the Gospel in a fun, compelling way and I connected to the Lord like never before. My name is Jiya, I live in India with my mother and my four sisters. When I was nine my dad separated from us. Later, my mother got sick. Also, living in a slum area, gaining an education as an underresourced young girl was nearly impossible. Feeling alone from not experiencing the love of a father, I considered giving up hope. I was introduced to Young Life by my aunt and uncle, who are Young Life leaders, when they invited me to Young Life club and ski camp. During that camp, the pastor made a call to surrender our lives to Jesus and it was at that moment that I made the decision to follow Him. I started reading my Bible and praying regularly. God completely transformed me, and I am now a volunteer leader for Young Life in my city. I am studying psychology and I want to work as a neuropsychologist in a hospital or research institution. I have always been musically inclined ... I took piano, violin, and voice lessons all through school. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve taken an interest in composing, writing all sorts of music, from singer songwriter to string quartets. As a Young Life Developing Global Leader, I’ve started helping in the music department with a band club at our local high school. I’m able to use my musical abilities to reach out to these students, but the conversations I'm having with them before are actually more encouraging than the actual practice itself.
