Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) Urology Clinic What is PTNS? Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) is a clinic-based procedure for the treatment of Overactive Bladder (OAB) symptoms of frequency, urgency and/urge incontinence. It involves the electrical stimulation of one of the nerves (posterior tibial nerve) involved in the control of bladder sensation and function, thereby resulting in symptom improvement. A commitment of 12 consecutive 30-minute sessions is required for adequate treatment, with further maintenance sessions as required. Why do you need this procedure? PTNS improves symptoms of frequency and urgency for those who have not responded adequately to dietary and lifestyle modifications as well as oral medication. How is the procedure performed? It is done in the outpatient clinic in a sitting/reclining position. A tiny needle electrode is placed above your ankle and electrical stimulation of this electrode is carried out by a battery-powered stimulator device. Treatment can be performed on either leg.

When the stimulator is turned on, you will become aware of a response in your foot which indicates that the correct nerve is being stimulated. The adjustment of the stimulation will be performed accordingly when we ask questions about your sensation and/or observe your toe movements. You will need to sit still during the treatment time and not move your leg. During the treatment, you may experience a buzzing, tingling or throbbing sensation during the treatment. The current can be turned down so that it is comfortable for the duration of the treatment. Each treatment session lasts for 30 minutes and the needle is removed at the end of the session.
