WELCOME TO Yield Gallery

Dear Clients, Yield Gallery is a family run business with years of experience in the market place providing collectors and enthusiasts with knowledge in buying and selling investment grade artworks.

Yield Gallery is based in Denmark Street, Soho, which has a lengthy history and is famous for its art & music. Back in the 1990’s, the building where we are based, 8 Denmark Street, was a huge art gallery showing works by then undiscovered artists such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Gavin Turk.

In the late 1990’s, when Damien Hirst rented 8 Denmark Street, he fell behind with his rent. In place of the rent, Hirst offered the landlord a couple of his paintings, which the landlord refused to accept and asked Damien Hirst to leave, those painting would be worth millions of pounds in today’s market! Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

The Banksy market has long been robust, and has grown at a consistent rate for over a decade, however last year was unprecedented with over £47 million spent on Banksy artworks alone, with a total 220% increase. We have seen a huge spike in new buyers looking to diversify their investment portfolios between 10-20%. It has been a huge privilege for Yield Gallery to support new and existing collectors as they navigate this often complex and less than transparent marketplace. Meanwhile, working with our more established investors in a market moving at an unexpected rate in the past year has been both challenging and rewarding for the whole Yield Gallery team.

Choose Your Weapon (Lemon), 2010

It goes without saying that Banksy himself has long played a clear role in shaping the way his work is brought to the secondary market — and the reception his newest works receive from the public and collectors alike are among the greatest rewards for us as a team working in the artist’s market.

Our gallery advisors are often asked for a solid prediction of what the market will do next. No one has a crystal ball for 2022 — if we did we’d probably be putting it all into art and the Banksy market going by 2021 auction results.

The demand will continue to be higher than ever, Banksy’s popularity internationally is growing expediently and we suspect this to only accelerate. It is without doubt will be a very exciting time for the market - but let’s hope the successes of this year are multiple. Yield Gallery is a modern and contemporary art specialist based within the bustling streets and the art community of Soho London.

We have an art studio in Soho London where we store our high-end blue-chip pieces from the worldfamous artists such as Banksy & Richard Hambleton. Client meetings can be arranged here via appointment only. We are also excited to be adding an additional London gallery in 2022.

Join an exclusive community of blue-chip and emerging art collectors, featuring works from Banksy, Richard Hambleton, Andy Warhol & Retna.

Please contact one of our experienced advisors for further information or to arrange an appointment at one of our London Galleries. We wish you all the very best for the year ahead, whatever its challenges. As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes, Yield Gallery

Banksy’s Famed Shredded Artwork, ‘Love Is in the Bin,’ Sells for a Record $25.4 Million at Sotheby’s –18 Times the Non-Shredded Price

Love is in the Bin was sold for £1.1million in 2018 and has resold three years later for £18.6million in October 2021, a record for the artist at auction.

Nine people chased the work for more than 10 minutes, according to Sotheby’s. The successful bidder was a collector in Asia, the auction house said. Banksy’s auction market has exploded over the past year. His top three auction prices have all been set in 2021. In the first seven months of the year, his work generated $125.5 million on the block, making him

the fifth best-selling artist, according to the Artnet Price Database. Notably, that total is almost as much as his work has generated at auction in all previous years combined.

It was originally known as “Girl With Balloon” when it first went under the hammer - also at Sotheby’s - but just as the anonymous collector made the winning bid, a hidden shredder embedded in the frame by Banksy whirred to life, leaving half the canvas hanging from the frame in strips.

BANKSY

BOOSTED A BRISTOL HOUSE PRICE FROM £300,000 TO £5 MILLION

The anonymous street artist, now something of a cult figure in the art world, painted a woman sneezing on the end wall of the house.

The year 2020 may have been one to forget for most people, but for Banksy it was 12 months in which he continued a seemingly irrepressible rise from street artist to cultural phenomenon.

Prices for Banksy prints at auction have been increasing steadily since January 2020... Overall there has been a 104% increase in Banksy signed prints and 164% Banksy unsigned prints in 2020. Close to £42.7 million worth of Banksy prints were sold from January - December 2020 - nearly seven times more than the amount of prints sold in 2019, which totaled around £7 million. This is the highest yearly increase in the last decade. The second-highest jump was from 2018-19, when the total value of Banksy prints rose by 92%.

Typically, Banksy creates two editions based on each of his images, One is made in an edition of 150, with each one signed by the artist. These tend to be the more expensive editions. He also usually concurrently creates a larger edition of around 600 unsigned works.

There is no doubt that Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips have been bustling with activity and interest in online-only sales. However, the instantaneous nature of sellers wanting to buy and sell immediately has increased, which has seen a surge in private sales.

Sellers are becoming frustrated with high commission rates at auction as well as feeling disheartened by long lead times. Here at Yield Gallery we can offer the benefit of being able to buy and sell immediately. Now more than ever, sellers are choosing private sales over auction for this very reason, realising that returns and turnaround times are much more advantageous. There has been a welcome arrival from newcomers in the market, particularly from private investors from Japan and America, as well as those from the Middle East. This has been demonstrated in private sales as well as throughout the public auctions. This new influx of buyers is not only great news for sellers but also great news for the art industry as a whole!

WHY BANKSY CAN SURVIVE A global pandemic

Buying Banksy Risk-Free

Before buying any Banksy artwork, the details are submitted to the Pest Control Office to gain their official stamp of approval. Pest Control are the official legal guardian of all Banksy artwork; they carry out a meticulous process dedicated to Banksy artwork to authenticate the legitimacy of every piece.

This service is carried out in order to protect both buyer and seller. Any Banksy artwork that has been certified as real should be accompanied by a Pest Control Office Certificate of Authentication, so you can be assured that your purchase is risk-free.

We advise that, once purchased, you register yourself as the new owner. This is another level of protection for you to verify your transaction and prevent others from posing as the owner of your artwork.

BANKSY’S RAPIDLY RISING MARKET

Supply and Demand makes Banksy a Great Investment

As far as the primary market is concerned, Banksy prints and unique works with certificates from Pest Control are the only truly authentic Banksy work. The market for these pieces shows no signs of slowing down!

Banksy's wide appeal has made his work a household name, with many of the prints being considered as iconic. The supply of Banksy work has reduced dramatically in the last 15 years, with gaps of between 2 to 7 years with no new work being released at all.

Girl With Balloon, released in 2004 would have originally cost £275 but now sells for over £400,000. Undoubtedly, the seemingly endless exposure and news that surrounds Banky's work attributes to its value.

PEST CONTROL - ‘KEEP IT REAL’
YIELD GALLERY INVESTMENT | 9

In September 2020, Sotheby’s closed it’s third dedicated sale of 23 Banksy Prints in online auction. It is no surprise that every piece sold. What was surprising was that the total take of the auction reached £2m, which was triple the estimated total anticipated amount expected. Every print at least doubled its' high estimate, with other pieces receiving four, five and in some cases ten times their high estimate. The demand for Banky’s work continues to increase with over half of the buyers at this auction never having bid at Sotheby’s before. With a new influx of buyers as well as traditional buyers looking to diversify their portfolio, there is no doubt that demand is currently higher than ever.

BANKSY AND THE PANDEMIC

New Record Reached This Year

Previously, the £9.9m paid for Banksy’s Devoted Parliament was the highest ever paid for one of his paintings.

However, during the pandemic Game Changer appeared in a foyer at Southampton General Hospital. The Banksy painting depicting a young boy playing with a superhero nurse doll has now raised more than £16.8m for an NHS charity after being sold at Christie’s auction. This work was a record world auction for a Banksy piece!

BANKSY vs PROPERTY

The rise and rise of the ‘affordable’ Banksy

While demand for Banksy works has rocketed at all value levels in 2020, the demand for ‘affordable’ Banksy artworks has been most acute, particularly for prints under £45,000 and unsigned prints.

This trend is likely to continue well into 2022, with new buyers entering the market.

In the last 12 months, the value of an unsigned Banksy print increased by 280%, almost 63% higher than the value of a signed edition of the same image, and 52% higher than the over-all increase in Banksy prints in 2020.

The highest jump in value was for an unsigned edition of Turf War, which achieved £64,320 in 2020 against a top previous price of £9,375 in 2019 – an increase of 586%.

“NO bridges the work of art and activism and brings the movement to life with remarkable immediacy.”
Yield Gallery were proud supporters of “No” 20 Years of Stop the War – A visual retrospective Exhibition in Bow, East London.

The exhibition itself ran from the 8th to the 19th of September 2021 at The Nunnery Gallery. Yield Gallery personally donated all three of our Banksy anti war placards from the protests held on the 15 February 2003; this was a coordinated day of protests across the world. These pieces by the now infamous street artist Banksy were created and nailed to wooden timbre to be marched through the capital in support of the cause. Very few of these placards are still in existence after being either destroyed by the metropolitan police or simply discarded by the protestors themselves. The exhibition highlighted these mass acts of anti-war opposition. Importantly, it also traces the role that artists have played in the movement since 2001, including work from a diverse mix of street artists, musicians, fashion designers, and photographers that have “been on the front line from the beginning”. It was a resounding success and achieved high attendance from the outset including numerous prominent politicians and artists themselves.

Pablo Picasso’s Granddaughter, Marina, could be the key to owning your very own limited-edition piece by the modern master

Forget about eye-watering multi-million pound paintings and discover the world of limited-edition prints, exclusively held by Yield Gallery in London

As a master of his craft, Picasso stands as one of the most recognised and influential artists ever. A prolific creator, who had a profound impact on modern art by pioneering many movements & techniques, including - but not limited to - Cubism and collage. Picasso was an experimenter at heart and a leader by practice.

So, who is Marina?

Once an artist passes away their artwork is inherited; in the case of Pablo Picasso - who died without a will - it took six years to divide his holdings at a ripe cost of $30 million. A fifth of the artist’s estate was passed on to Marina Picasso. During Pablo’s first marriage to the Ukrainian ballet dancer Olga Khokhlova, they had a son named Paolo who would later welcome his first child Marina Picasso, in 1950. Marina grew up distanced from her grandfather due to the divorce of her parents and was raised in poverty away from Picasso’s enormous wealth.

Despite such conditions growing-up being a sharp financial contrast to her later inheritance (of more than 10,000 artworks altogether!) Marina did not allow wealth to shadow her philanthropic work-ethic. As a young adult unable to afford college, she supported herself working in a home for ill and disabled children and continued such outward kindness into her later years, selling her collection alongside famed gallery representative Jan Krugier to fund her charity work.

After Krugier’s death in 2008, Marina was unimpressed selling via Sotheby’s Auction house and decided instead to sell privately – continuing to do so until this day. Through the funds Marina acquired over the years she founded an orphanage in Vietnam called “The Village of Youth” as well as a foundation that has funded food packages, farming subsidies, scholarships and medical equipment for hospitals around the globe including, but not limited to: Switzerland, France, and various countries across the continent of Africa.

BUSTE DE FEMME (female bust)

This picture is one of the best-known of Picasso’s series of images of Dora Mar. The electric red lends an intensity that heightens the colours of Picasso’s muse’s face and clothing. The yellows, blues and greens thrust themselves into a bold relief through their contrast with the near-monochrome background. It is a joyful rendition that was created at the height of the two artists’ relationship. Anecdotally, Buste De Femme (Femme à la résille) was one of the paintings with which Picasso was unable to part during his lifetime. Only changing hands after his death, whereby it was inherited by his granddaughter, Marina.

Jan Krugier was then able to acquire the original 1938 painting due to their friendship, but it was later sold to a private collector through Christie’s for $67.3 million (above its upper estimate) after featuring in its last public shows in both New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Paris’ Grand Palais, (Picasso and Portraiture: Representation and Transformation, April 1996-January 1997).

LA FILLE DE L`ARTISTE A DEUX ANS ET DEMI AVEC UN BATEAU (The Artist’s Daughter Is Two And A Half Years Old With A Boat)

A spirited Maya Picasso, aged two-and-a-half, is the subject of this vivid portrait from 1938. Painted only months after he had finished his harrowing Guernica, this picture clearly evidences that Maya, daughter of Marie-Thérèse Walter, was a great source of joy in Picasso’s life. The baby girl presented new and delightful artistic challenges for her father. Picasso’s palette for this picture captures the liveliness and playfulness of Maya’s nursery. For the background he has chosen a robin’s egg blue, which he also uses for the highlights of her blonde hair. He depicts her holding a favourite toy boat, which features in other portraits from this time, and a colourful pinwheel in her chubby hand. This colourful, boisterous print by Pablo Picasso showcases his talent as a proponent of Cubism.

Now 86 years old, Maya lives in Paris, has three children, and is also one of Picasso’s five surviving heirs, alongside Marina. Maya recalls watching her father paint Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) which set a record in 2015 for a work sold at auction at a closing bid of $179.4 million.

“ Helping to look after orphaned children or suffering adolescents and surrounding them with affection has been a constant aim of my life.”
Marina Picasso

BUSTE DE FEMME NUE FACE (Bust Of Nude Woman?)

Pablo Picasso’s nude portrait of his wife and muse Jacqueline Roque is one hundreds of portraits that he painted of her in the 11 years of their marriage. He had met her when she was just 26, himself 72, convincing her to date him by drawing a chalk dove on her house and bringing her a rose everyday for six months. Picasso painted her angular and elongated, with her face characterised by large eyes and high-set cheekbones. The shades of deep blue lay fluidly on the canvas with bright whites and a vibrant yellow suggest a recognition of the artist’s early ‚blue period’, yet it had now come to combine with the energy he had for life and all its wonder.

After Pablo’s death in 1973, Jacqueline prevented Picasso’s children Claude and Paloma Picasso from attending his funeral. Jacqueline also barred Picasso’s grandson Pablito Picasso – Marina Picasso’s younger brother - from attending the service. Pablito was so distraught he drank a bottle of bleach, from which he died three months later. The death of her brother is an key reason Marina chose to sell all of the work she had inherited, for it could not be helped but associated with his passing. Picasso is quoted to have said: “Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face, or what’s behind it?” However, one questions the delicate portrayal in his paintings as compared to the pain Jacqueline caused throughout his family after his death.

FEMME AU BALCON (Woman on a balcony)

During the early 20th Century, Picasso was working alongside George Braque with inspiration from African sculpture to create a new movement that came to be known as cubism. Picasso is commonly recognised as the pioneer for this movement, and is the foundation for his fame. Here in Femme Au Balcon, we see Picasso’s cubist elements blend with portraiture to create this image full of colour and life.

Leaning against the curved railing of the balcony, the model in this print is depicted through a series of shapes and forms of varying colours layered over one another. A typical example of Pablo Picasso’s work, this print demonstrates the artist’s ability to manipulate perspective and create unique views of his subjects.

RICHARD HAMBLETON

Richard Hambleton was an American-Canadian graffiti artist best known for his recurring motif of a black-silhouetted figure known as the Shadowman.

Along with his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hambleton painted directly on the streets of New York and achieved success during the art boom of the 1980s. “I painted the town black,” he once said.

“They could represent watchmen or danger or the shadows of a human body after a nuclear holocaust or even my own shadow.”

Born on June 23, 1952 in Vancouver, Canada, he studied at the Vancouver School of Art before beginning his Image Mass Murder series in 1976. These works mimicked the look of chalk outlines used by police during crime scene investigations. Settling in New York in 1979, Hambleton transitioned from street art to producing paintings in his studio. He went on to participate in both the 1984 and 1988 Venice Biennale.

The artist died on October 29, 2017 in New York, NY. Today, Hambleton’s works are held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.

The current blue-chip artist Banksy quotes “without Richard Hambleton there would be no Banksy, I received all my inspiration from Richard Hambletons street art “Shadowman”. It’s been a big few years for the Richard Hambleton market since his death in 2017.

On June 26th 2018, the late street artist’s 1983 painting ‘As the World Burns’ sold for $552,000 at Artcurial’s Writing’s On the Wall auction in Paris. The sale nearly quadrupled its $140,000 estimate and smashed Hambleton’s previous auction record of $215,000.

RICHARD HAMBLETON

Beautiful Paintings

The beautiful paintings are Richard Hambleton’s most profound achievement to date. These gold or silver leaf paintings on metal, mirrors and canvas are drenched with tinted varnish offering a potent combination of absorbing beauty and arousing illusion.

Before Americas richest man David Rockefeller passed away in 2017 at 101 years old, David Rockefeller’s last purchase in 2016 was these amazing pair of Richards Hambletons “Beautiful Paintings” created in 1995. David Rockefeller was the guardian of his family’s fortunes and head of a sprawling network of family interests that ranged from environmental conservation to the arts. The Rockefeller’s art collection has become one of there most valuable assets and represents a significant part of the family’s wealth.

Richard Hambletons Landscape piece named “Mutiny” acrylic on canvas was sold at Phillips auction house in November 2019 for $500,000, selling for 5 times its original estimate of $100,000 !

RICHARD HAMBLETON

Shadow Heads

Richard Hambleton created his amazing Shadow Heads to use as currency when he needed to pay for shelter or any other debts, he may have had. He always carried a satchel with a few ShadowHeads so he could pay for his bills and day to day living expenses. A Shadow Head is the baseline to owning an original, signed & dated artworks by the artist, they all vary in shape , size & colour, no two are the same.

A Richard Hambleton Shadow Head is seen as an essential piece in any art collector’s portfolio, achieving auctions results of over $70,000.

Forbes stated that ‘Hambleton is credited with starting the New York Street Art Movement’, along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, thus influencing later street-art sensation Banksy, amongst countless others. Exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in 1984 as well as featuring on the cover of Life Magazine are two of his greatest of many achievements. Hambleton’s works, rich in meaning and contextual social commentary, have been successfully sold in auction house’s such as Christie’s, Phillips, and Sotheby’s. In 2019 Richard Hambleton’s ‘Four Jumping Shadows’ sold at Sotheby’s beating estimates and achieving $437,500.

WILL McNALLY

WILL McNALLY

Born and raised in the UK from Irish and Cypriot roots, Will McNally is a self-taught artist who discovered that alongside his artistic passion he also wielded a natural aptitude for creating work that he and others found immense pleasure in. Whilst Will is UK-based, his reach is international and he has already worked with Universal Studios and Warner Brothers, as well as a multitude of the rich and famous from around the world.

Currently showcasing his pieces in New York, Will has already found success across the United States despite his youth and relatively recent arrival on the art scene.

Boasting clients from Los Angeles to Dubai, as well as great success in his home country, the future is already looking very bright for Will McNally. Taking a lot of his inspiration from modern art, as well as modern media –he is a huge, self-confessed fan of movie and musical legends, which you can evidently see in his pieces. Despite his love of pop-culture, Will is very proud of his roots and also strives to showcase his heritage and cultural background through his work. Will’s pieces are unlike the majority of young artists that we see on the market as he has a unique take on very iconic snapshots or common portraits. His use of lighting is rarely seen in the field and showcases a vastly differing viewpoint on already fantastic artwork. The work he creates is designed to appeal in part to the younger art investor, and his take on scenes from movies and artists we know and love gives his work a very stylised appeal. In an industry where the average age of the art purchaser is dropping by the

day, there is a significant gap between posters that depict movies, music and television, and fine art that is exquisite but unrelatable.

This is where Will McNally comes in, fitting into this niche and filling the need for those who wish to have artwork that they appreciate on a personal level as it strikes a direct chord with their lives. We all have favourite movies, favourite shots, favourite artists and albums, and yet the only way most people choose to show their love for the media is with film prints or posters.

Will depicts incredible portraits of movie stars, scenes and iconography, musicians and quotes which are perfect for the modern-day art collector. The style that Will uses means that your favourite scene from a film or artist will look equally at home in a bedroom, drawing room or dining room alongside more traditional artwork.

Some of his most recent work needs to be seen in person to be truly appreciated, his use of neon lighting elevates his pieces to command the room; ranging from subtle to dominating, Will truly has pieces that cater to all tastes.

STIK

Stik's monetary value of his works have been rising consistently since he exploded on the streets in 2012. All Stiks pieces that have sold through major auction houses such as Christies & Sothebys have sold for above & beyond their estimates by some huge amounts

A maquette of the bronze sculpture Holding Hands (2020) by the British street artist Stik sold at Christie’s contemporary day sale for £287,500 ($376,700), setting a new auction record for the artist. The piece is a proof of a larger sculpture that was installed in London’s Hoxton Square earlier this year. Stik donated the maquette to the Hackney Council, the local government of the London borough of Hackney; proceeds from its sale will go towards funding a new public sculpture and installations across the borough.

Stik donates large amounts of his profits to the regeneration of the Shoreditch & east London areas

Lovely visit to this gallery today. My Husband and I were shown around by Richard who is a great chap and extremely passionate about his art. I especially enjoyed the Banksy No Ball Games! We were offered refreshments (free of charge) on arrival and the goodie bag at the end was a nice touch!

Amelda Lane

Attended their exhibition at Saatchi gallery last week, had a fantastic time. Some really interesting pieces of art on show the staff were courteous and professional.

Antonie Askes

Visited them just before London went into lock down at their address & was taken to the Soho Gallery, had to make an appointment as they are not open to the public due to covid-19. They were very professional and adhered to the government guidelines, also saw some very interesting pieces of art. Will defiantly be using this gallery to purchase some pieces in the future.

James Whittaker

Just got back from a tour of their gallery which was brill! I did't expect it to be so interesting! They have some really nice pieces of art mainly from Richard Hambleton (I have been a fan of Richard's work for ages anyway) but I even learned some new interesting facts about him! The staff were very professional and you could tell they care about art. Thanks!
