RICHARD HAMBLETON

Yield Gallery specialise in Richard Hambleton Original Pieces.

Richard Hambleton was Considered by many to be the Godfather of street art (a title the artist rejected) Hambleton first appeared on the scene in 1976 with his Mass Murder series.

He created 600 across 15 cities, the American-Canadian would anonymously chalk the outline of bodies, creating a vivid impression of murder scenes. But it was the dark, life-sized, black-silhouetted figure of his early eighties character, the Shadowman, that propelled him to famehe painted 450 of them on the walls of New York City.

As Hambleton became more established the artist started to paint on canvas in which Galleries quickly embraced him . As did Europe, when he toured the continent in the early eighties, painting his Shadowmen on the walls of London, Paris, Berlin and Rome.

But money and fame didn't satisfy Hambleton, and by the nineties, with an aggressive and ever-worsening drug habit, he had fallen out of view.

The exhibition then travelled to Milan, Moscow, Cannes and Paris, before returning to New York in 2011 By now Hambleton's name was once more being held in the same high esteem it had garnered in the 1980s, when he was more famous than his contemporaries JeanMichel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and had twice appeared on the cover of Life magazine

DAVID HOCKNEY

David Hockney, born 9 July 1937 is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer As an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.

On 15 November 2018, Hockney's 1972 work Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold at Christie's auction house in New York City for $90 million (£70 million), becoming the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction. It broke the previous record which was set by the 2013 sale of Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog (Orange) for $58.4 million. Hockney held the record until 15 May 2019 when Koons reclaimed the honour by selling his Rabbit for more than $91 million at Christie's in New York.

Hockney has experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolours, photography, and many other media including a fax machine, paper pulp, computer applications and iPad drawing programs. The subject matter of interest ranges from still life’s to landscapes, portraits of friends, his dogs, and stage designs for the Royal Court Theatre, Glyndebourne, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

JOE LYCETT

One of Britain’s most popular comedians JoveLycett has created Slags (2020) in support of the UK’s leading HIV charity the Terrance Higgins Trust. Slags (2020) will go under the hammer at The Auction at Christie’s, a night that changes the lives of people living with and affected by HIV Since it started over 20 years ago, it has raised over £5.2 million for the THT. Over the last four decades, the charity has been at the forefront of the fight against HIV – and today, they’re working towards the life-changing goal of ending new HIV cases in the UK by 2030

We thought we’d let Joe describe this work himself: “This piece of art, which I have personally created with my own fists, stands out as a particularly remarkable painting that skillfully captures the essence of flowers. However, this is no ordinary floral representation like you might get from Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe or Bob Ross Each flower depicted in this artwork carries an unconventional twist, because over each one I’ve written the word ‘slag.’ This term, often used colloquially, here playfully contrasts with the traditional beauty and delicacy associated with flowers, introducing a layer of irony and critique Through this unique juxtaposition, the painting invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of beauty and value, and of slags.”

Joe’s piece and more than 70 artworks, experiences and trips will be auctioned to fundraise for the THT life-changing work. The donated items are spread across two auctions the Timed Auction, which is live now and the Live Auction at Christie’s By bidding on these lots, you can help end a global epidemic that has killed 38 million people and ensure that Terrence Higgins Trust can be there for people living with HIV.

Matthew Marquis

Matthew Marquis 42 is an American contemporary artist that inspires his oil paintings on canvas with a wide range of grotesque figures with bulging eyes, bulbous cheeks, proliferating limbs, and fractured faces evoke the allure and abjection of a carnival.

Marquis has been painting for over 20 years in his hometown of Telford, Pennsylvania of the United States.

The talented Marquis takes inspiration from artists including Pablo Picasso and George Condo integrating tenets of abstraction into a practice that ranges from macabre portraiture to more geometrical, less representational compositions.

Marquis has referred to his surrealistic style as a unique humoured twist on cubism which attempts to capture a subject’s multiplicity, and “artificial realism” that offers a simulated, distinctly American take on European art.

HARLAND MILLER

Harland Miller is an artist and writer whose peripatetic career has included time spent in both Europe and America. After living and exhibiting in New York, Berlin and New Orleans during the ’80s and ’90s, Miller achieved critical acclaim with his debut novel, Slow Down Arthur, Stick to Thirty (2000), the story of a kid who travels around northern England with a David Bowie impersonator.

As a writer, Miller’s novels and short stories often take his autobiography as the point of departure. A love of books themselves, not only as the carriers of stories but as objects in their own right, equally pervades his artistic practice. In his paintings and works on paper Miller regularly sets up the potential for narratives, characterised by their humanity and tragi-comedy, using titles, phrases or single words to echo or allow for multiple readings

In 2001 Miller began a series of paintings based on the dust jackets of Penguin books. By appropriating the iconic Penguin logo, Miller found a way to marry painting with his writer’s love of words Influenced by Pop art and abstraction from mid-century America, his works draw attention to the inherent possibilities of language within the visual field, employing humour, irony and emotion to explore not only the formal qualities of painting but also the complexities of the spoken and written word

FERN

Born in 1996, Fern is a London-based British painter whose artistic style reflects the influence of various contemporary artists, such as Harland Miller and The Connor Brothers. Drawing inspiration from mid-century posters, Fern’s work features a juxtaposition of pin-up style portraits of women against blocks of solid colour, accompanied by deadpan snippets of text.

Her distinctive aesthetic, characterised by a blend of dry wit and playful intelligence, results in captivating paintings that satirise both modern and contemporary culture. As a female artist, Fern frequently celebrates self-assured femininity and explores themes of female sexuality while simultaneously offering overt or implicit critiques of the male-dominated world in which she navigates.

Fern has created a new series of pieces exclusively for ‘Urban Impressions’ all on display.

MR CALLABY

Matthew Callaby, known as MrCallaby, is a British artist, currently based in Bristol. He uses acrylic on canvas to create cute, chubby characters in a strange, vivid world. His work often features anthropomorphic characters painted in his unique, illustrative style. Despite see-sawing between adorable and disturbing, Callaby’s main goal is to create a sense of fun within his work.

Following on from his first solo exhibition show, ‘Sad Flower Season’, Yield Gallery are delighted to exclusively have 4 of his pieces on display at ‘Urban Spring’.
