SANTA CRUZ BLUES FESTIVAL May 25-26, 2013

Gates open by 10am. Music starts right at 11am and goes till around 7:30pm. There are no ins and outs after 3pm. We recommend arriving early as both the Gold Circle and General Admission sections are on a first come, first served basis.

Aptos Village Park is located at 100 Aptos Creek Road in Aptos, California. Please note there is no parking at the event site. Free parking, as well as a free shuttle service to and from the festival site, is located at Cabrillo College. Signs will be posted directing cars to the parking site. Directions available on our website.

The Cabrillo College parking lot opens at 8am and luxury shuttle buses begin transporting ticket holders at 9am.

What not to bring: dogs, food, alcohol, cans, bottles, containers, coolers, umbrellas, cameras with removable lens, recording devices, video cameras.

What to bring: one sealed personal bottle of water, money to purchase Blues Bucks, sun screen, hat, and a small personal-use camera (no video).

Seats are only provided in the Gold Circle section.

Ticket holders in the General Admission section are encouraged to bring blankets and may bring chairs that are no more than 30 inches in height, with a seat height of no more than 10 inches.

Park Rules: Smoking is no longer allowed anywhere inside Santa Cruz County Parks. The Santa Cruz County Parks and Sheriff’s Department do not allow colors of any organization to be worn at any public event.

The Santa Cruz Blues Festival is a scrip-based event, and cash will not be accepted at any booths except the Blues Festival Merchandise booth, Artist Merchandise Booth & Vintage Blues Booth. Ticket holders can visit the Blues Bucks booth to purchase scrip tickets either with cash or credit card (Visa or Mastercard only). Blues Bucks is the only form of payment acceptable for all food and beverage purchases. Am ATM is located in the Blues Pavilion at the back of the park.

The food court offers a wide variety of choices, including BBQ, Asian, Mexican, Wraps, Pizza, Organic Fare, A Taste Of New Orleans, Gourmet Hot Dogs and more. We also have kettle korn, frozen fruit bars, smoothies, desserts, water and other non-alcoholic beverages. Beer and wine are available at selected booths. Hot and cold coffee drinks are also available.

You’ve made a smart choice to spend your weekend at California’s most intimate music experience. Nestled in the redwoods and up the mossy banks from the bubbling Aptos Creek, it’s time to snap your low-back chairs into place and soak in the music.

Today’s show has a theme that you intutive music fans might recognize—the blues!

Saturday’s festivities start off with Carolyn Wonderland, who is an incredible singer/ songwriter/guitarist from Austin, Texas. Ray Benson, from Asleep at the Wheel, produced Wonderland’s last release, and it just pops off the platter. Sometimes an artist has a hard time getting their message across, and the title of that album was Miss Understood. Since then, Wonderland has been wowing a growing legion of fans who totally understand her raw power.

Wonderland has a deep understanding of Texas blues, and her live performances are transcendent, electrified experiences that are rich with tribute to legends like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. Born in Houston, Wonderland developed her chops while living the bohemian life, seeing bands and living out of her van in Austin. Growing up around Texas blues marvels like Double Trouble and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Wonderland blossomed in the post-Stevie Ray era, enchanting a regional audience that has grown around the world. Her fiery red-haired performances—from whistled solos, to trumpet, to blistering Texas blues guitars—are a trip through the looking glass.

Currently a three-piece band, Wonderland may be the lead driver, but her shotguns are loaded and ready to fire. Cole El-Saleh keeps the beat rolling with keyboard bass and yet assuredly brings color and life to each distinct tune. Drummer Rob Hooper brings the thunder for Wonderland to lay down the lightning.

Wonderland is a triple-threat, and with her mix of country, swing, surf, gospel, and soul she is the perfect mix to start off this day of Texas, Chicago and British blues music.

sonny landreth Continuing an afternoon of fine guitar expertise and style, the Santa Cruz Blues Festival is proud to be able to feature the mind-blowing slide guitar work of Sonny Landreth. Beginning in the 1920s slide guitar became a staple of blues legends like Blind Willie Johnson, Robert Johnson and Son House. Elmore James was the first to bring slide to the electric guitar, vibrating length and pitch, and created a sound that remained relatively unchanged until Landreth came along.

Born to the right of Texas, in Mississippi, Landreth’s family moved to Louisiana early on, which helped root the young performer in the tradition and cultural heritage of the Deep South—which some say is more a state of mind rather than a geographical location.

Premiere Guitar Magazine states that Landreth’s albums, South of I-10 and Levee Town, released in 1995 and 2000 respectively, “contain some of the most incredible slide guitar work ever recorded.” The reason for this accolade is because Landreth has developed his own technique where he also frets notes and plays chord fragments behind the slide—in a word: unbelievable. And we think you will agree, when Landreth hits the stage, your idea of what a slide guitarist can achieve will be forever changed.

Landreth’s latest release, Elemental Journey (engineered by guitar legend Joe Satriani), is an all-instrumental trek through his musical upbringing. Many great blues players are distinguished by their style­—are known by their original technique. Sonny Landreth brings an

original voice to the blues with picking, slapping, tapping and a slide guitar that is unlike anything you’ve heard. Having toured with John Hiatt Jimmy Buffet, and jamming with everyone from Mark Knopfler and Robben Ford to Eric Clapton, Landreth plays a wide range of styles, embracing everything from Texas blues and Delta blues to Cajun and Zydeco.

Sounds of Trinidad, New Orleans, Jamaica, and other exotic spots are woven into Landreth’s tapestry as he plays the music of the planet.

John Mayall The Santa Cruz Blues Festival has grown into a premiere showcase for American roots music and blues giants. And everybody agrees, when it comes to British blues, all roads lead to the legendary John Mayall.

Born in 1933 in Macclesfield, England, Mayall has been a leader in developing an ongoing conversation on what the blues can encompass.

A self-taught prodigy who, at an early age, immersed himself in his father’s vinyl collection of jazz and blues legends like Lead Belly, Pinetop Smith and Eddie Lang—Mayall yearned to emulate what he was hearing. Teaching himself to play guitar, piano and harmonica, it wasn’t long before the founding father of British blues, Alexis Korner, convinced Mayall to be a full-time musician.

Starting in 1956, Mayall began playing with the Powerhouse Four at dance halls. In 1962, Mayall joined the Blues Syndicate. And just one year later he began his own band, now known worldwide as The Bluesbreakers. The band began to gain some notoriety when Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds in 1965 to join up with Mayall in the Bluesbreakers, ensuring the band’s reputation as England’s greatest blues band.

This begins what is one of the most prolific blues soap operas in the history of music. With a keen eye for talent, Mayall knew how to pick the best players to join The Bluesbreakers—but making them stay was never easy. Within the first three years, The Bluesbreakers found and lost: Eric Clapton to Cream (along with bassist Jack Bruce); John McVie left with two other members of The Bluesbreakers (guitarist Peter Green and

drummer Mick Fleetwood) to form Fleetwood Mac; and the young budding guitarist Mick Taylor also left to join The Rolling Stones.

Despite his heralded position Mayall has never had a hit record, won a Grammy or been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but he was at the center of a cyclone that established British Blues as a phenomenon that influenced legions of players, fans and aficionados. After a legacy of nearly five decades, in 2008 Mayall officially disbanded The Bluesbreakers. Dozens of careers were launched and renewed with such diverse members as Coco Montoya and Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction). Authentic, original, and one of the finest guitar and harmonica players on the globe, please put your hands together and give tribute to a true pioneer: John Mayall!

When it comes to Texas blues, nobody epitomized the sound with more swank and swagger than the Vaughan brothers. Older brother of the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie was the original trail blazer. As Guitar Player Magazine notes, “He is a virtual deity—a living legend.” It is with the utmost excitement that this year the Santa Cruz Blues Festival presents Jimmie Vaughan with special guests, Lou Ann Barton and The Tilt-A-Whirl Band.

Raised in Dallas County, Texas, Vaughan’s passion for roots music, and his ability to destroy guitar solos, eventually led to his band, The Chessmen, to open for The Jimi Hendrix Band—but it was upon hearing Muddy Waters in concert that the young Vaughan felt something resound in his mortal coil to dive deeper into the blues.

Like so many aspiring musicians, Jimmie moved to Austin to be among younger, hipper people, and also to be around the Godfather of Austin Blues, W.C. Clark. In fact, Clark had just left Austin thinking the scene had died until he got a chance to jam with Vaughan and realized a new wave of youngsters interested in the blues was being born. Vaughan brought his younger brother, Stevie, to Austin to join Texas Storm, and soon the band was the talk of the town.

Jimmie Vaughan created a unique style for himself, with slicked-backed hair, fine threads and custom vintage cars—no irony attached.

His natural progression to bring the best blues to the scene ultimately culminated in his most endearing band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

King, Buddy Guy and Vaughan’s inspiration, Muddy Waters. According to Vaughan it was Waters who came up to him during a show and told him to carry on the tradition of the Muddy Waters sound, “‘When I’m gone, I want you to do that, and show everybody that’s what I did. I want you to do it for me,’”—passing the musical torch from one of the blues most cherished performers to the leader of a new generation of bluesmen.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds had platinum albums, constant international tours and their song “Tuff Enuff” became their worldwide, instantly recognizable hit. Tough, rough and ready to rumble, Vaughan’s an inspiration to all who witness his fierce guitar work.

Making this brilliant afternoon set of music even more spectacular is that Vaughan is being joined onstage by Austin’s favorite blues singer, Lou Ann Barton. The fiery diva sang with Stevie Ray in Double Trouble and is a welcome addition alongside the smoking Tilt-A-Whirl band. In a few moments you will be unsure if that smoky sweet smell is coming from the rib shack in the back or from the stage. Get ready for blues, Texas style!

steve miller band As the sun begins to set on an amazing day of music, get ready to experience one of America’s greatest legends of blues and rock and roll: the Steve Miller Band. Appearing for the first time, ever, in our beautiful city, you are witnessing a moment that will live in your heart and mind forever.

Often, lead singers get saddled as being the living incarnation of the characters in their songs.

Thus Steve Miller is The Joker, The Gangster of Love and The Space Cowboy—and indeed he is all of these things. Born in Milwaukee, it was like destiny had a plan for the young Miller to avoid a life working in the breweries. A natural born performer in a family of performers, Miller’s father became friends with Les Paul, whose name is synonymous with the electric guitar.

When his family moved to Texas, Miller found himself and his band of teenagers backing up blues great Jimmy Reed, who became a lifelong mentor of Miller’s.

The Pompatus of Love landed in Chicago during the explosion of the blues scene and Miller sat at the feet and learned from legends like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Buddy Guy. Cutting his teeth on the blues, Miller left the windy city for the sunny shores of California to start his own band at the onset of the Summer of Love.

Originally called the Steve Miller Blues Band, the name was shortened in 1967 when Boz Scaggs, another Santa Cruz Blues Festival favorite, joined the band. Their freshman album, Children of the Future, did not yield any of the gold that has become synonymous with Steve Miller’s output— but the rich vein had been tapped.

Blues and funk merged with blistering guitar solos cementing a sound that was to last five decades.

By the end of the 60s, the Steve Miller Band was a nationwide success with such tunes as “Livin’ in the USA” and its battle cry of “Somebody give me a cheeseburger!” Miller was climbing up the Billboard charts with each consecutive album. At the end of the decade that was steeped in LSD and Love-Ins, the song “Space Cowboy” epitomized an era of exploration. In 1972, after rehabilitating from a near fatal car accident, the Steve Miller Band released “The Joker,” whose title track hit #1 on the charts.

From the outer limits of deep space, the Steve Miller Band had found a new groove that returned to the roots of blues and rock and roll. During our country’s bicentennial, the band released “Fly Like an Eagle,” pushing the success meter into legend status. “Take the Money and Run,” “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Rock ‘n’ Me” all jumped off the turntable and into the airwaves with abandon.

Just one year later in 1977, Book of Dreams had three more hits: “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love” and “Abracadabra.” Steve Miller has influenced the musical lexicon of many generations. From country stars to rap stars, the Steve Miller Band remains a huge influence. It’s time to get loveydovey and welcome, the Steve Miller Band.

Hailing from Oakland, California, the band features Warsaw, Poland born front man Lech Weirzynski whose crooning reflects the soul and passion of such people as Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. Weirzynski seamlessly transitions from authentic gospel songs that stir the spirit to funky anthems designed to get you on your feet. A smoking rhythm section drives the band led by saxophonist Johnny Bones churning the turbulent waters with breathtaking solos.

nicki bluhm & the gramblers The afternoon has been moving along with the sweet sounds of soul and funk; get ready for a new genre, known affectionately, as California Soul. The Bay Area has repeatedly produced such a prodigious amount of talented acts that, when a band rises to the top, it is a must-stopand-listen moment. Taking the country by storm is the multi-faceted sensation of Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers.

Nicki Bluhm is the wife of Tim Bluhm, whose contributions to the distinct, special California sound—with his band The Mother Hips—are legendary. Hard to believe that just a few years ago Nicki Bluhm really had no intention of being in a band. Thankfully, though, for all of us, she took to the stage like a swan to water. With a voice reminiscent of Linda Ronstadt, her power and depth are at once empowering, enchanting and a welcome reprieve.

Every one of Bluhm’s albums is like discovering a new ocean of sound, and on her 2011 release, Driftwood, it became evident that a fresh new voice had arrived in the Bay Area jamband scene, where she was quickly invited to join people on stage like Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes) and Steve Kimock (Zero).

A central key to Bluhm’s success is her band, The Gramblers, that includes childhood friend Deren Ney on guitar, Dave Mulligan on rhythm guitar, ALO alumni Steve Adams on bass and Mike Curry on drums. While Bluhm’s voice is one of the strongest sirens in the country, it’s the spaces between, where Ney fills interludes

with memorable, tight, craftsman guitar grooves that raise the sails on Bluhm’s ship. And when husband and wife move up front on songs like “Stick with Me” it really does seem like Johnny Cash and June Carter have been summoned.

With new songs like “Little Too Late” and “Ravenous” being laid down at her husband’s Mission Bells studio in San Francisco, a cool California vibe imbues every note. THE james hunter six Families have been staking out their claims of blanket-covered grass in the large field of Aptos Village Park for over two decades.

Hardcore music fans gather to share the privilege of seeing world class musicians in a cherished setting. And this next act features the internationally acclaimed soulful crooning of The James Hunter Six. Imagine Ray Charles (who played The Santa Cruz Blues Festival in 2003) complete with a smoldering horn section transposed onto the frame of an English roots fan with a penchant for writing catchy tunes that sound like they just stepped off an old Sam Cooke album. Hunter’s voice is aggressive, demanding, haunting and the band cooks, baby. Damian Hand swings on tenor sax; Lee Badau blows hard on baritone sax; Jason Wilson thumps it just right on double bass; Carwyn Ellis mashes the keyboards; and Jonathan Lee is sonic on the skins.

The James Hunter Six captures such a classic soul sound that it’s like traveling back in time with each performance. In 1986, Hunter’s first band Howlin’ Wilf and the Vee-Jays was passionate but found no traction in the bustling London metropolitan music scene. Working the life of a laborer for the railroads systems of the UK, Hunter was in his early forties and busking in Trafalgar Square before he got noticed by some professionals with an insider’s knowledge.

An early fan of his inimitable style was Van Morrison, who appeared on Believe What I Say, Hunter’s first album. Their relationship took

root and Hunter accompanied Morrison on tour. It seemed like the stars were looking out for Hunter, as Boz Scaggs also helped bring the sound to a bigger audience. Since those early scrappy days, The James Hunter Six has opened for B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and John Lee Hooker and has also been nominated for a Grammy for Best New Traditional Blues Album for People Gonna Talk.

While the band can blast through the best of cover songs, it’s the original compositions that embody the wide range of the Howlin’ Wilf that you will be humming the rest of the week. Hunter’s repertoire has increased, moving from finger-snapping upbeat tunes like “Chickenswitch” to sultry ballads like “If I Only Knew,” both from his latest, to the must-have album Minute by Minute. sharon jones & the dap-kings Although corporations fund most musical festivals, The Santa Cruz Blues Festival is an increasingly rare locally-owned event—headed up by the visionary owner of Moe’s Alley, Bill Welch. With an ear tuned to the next big thing, Welch has handpicked this year’s line-up with an eye on R&B. Lucky for us, as you are about to experience one of the finest soul/funk bands to ever grace the planet—Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings.

Sharon Jones rocked her church and several funk-based bands in the 1970s, honing her voice, style, and dance moves—but Jones was strictly blue-collar, working as an armed guard for Wells Fargo, and as a corrections officer at the infamous Riker’s Island. This no-nonsense attitude comes through in the intensity of Jones live performance and, as fate would have it, eventually came to the attention of a French record label, Pure Records.

tedeschi trucks band It’s been an amazing Sunday of music with each act taking us higher and higher, and now it’s time to jettison the booster rockets and go into deep space with the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

From playing for the Obamas, to their own down-home extravaganza, the Wanee Festival in Florida, the band has crystallized into one of the strongest bands in the country and champions of blues/soul and good old jam band rock and roll.

Susan Tedeschi is no stranger to The Santa Cruz Blues Festival—She co-headlined with Robert Cray in 2005 & she and husband Derek Trucks (nephew of The Allman Brothers’ drummer Butch Trucks) graced our stage in 2010. At that time, the band was still coming together, and after three years on the road with a solid cast and crew, they have improved exponentially.

Their newest collection of songs Everybody’s Talkin’ contains some great covers including Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight,” Elmore James’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and the Staple Singers’ “Wade in the Water.”

Tedeschi has earned a gold record for Just Won’t Burn and multiple Grammy nominations, while Trucks scored two Grammys for his albums Already Free and Revelator. Tedeschi’s voice is full of soulful yearning, and is reminiscent of Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. When combined with Derek Trucks sweet Southern sound—a sound he channels through his Gibson—the music is at once unique and familiar.

take a simple gospel melody and wind it up to epic proportions on the keys. Mike Mattison (lead singer of the Derek Trucks Band) has joined the bigger collective, and the three-piece horn section blasts through classic Allman Brothers tunes and award-winning Trucks and Tedeschi songs like “Down in the Flood” and “Hurt So Bad”.

What started as a family jamband experiment has left the nest of the Wanee Festival and taken the act across the globe. Tedeschi is grateful that she and Trucks finally have one band to put all their efforts into. “Definitely a dream to be able to go out on the road together—we don’t have to be in separate bands, and not together all the time,” says Tedeschi. “We all respect each other and do the best we can.”

With an upcoming tour alongside The Black Crowes, the Tedeschi Trucks Band is fast becoming the finest edge of a razor-sharp musical heritage that started in Jacksonville, Florida (where Tedeschi and Trucks share a home and recording studio) with The Allman Brothers in 1969.
