W

elcome, folks, to the 22nd annual Kate Wolf Music Festival, the seventeenth here at beautiful Black Oak Ranch. We are very happy that you have chosen to spend your weekend with us, recharge your batteries and join together in community, one that once again brings the finest in musical traditions to the wooded hills of Mendocino County. In order to make an event such as this happen we rely on an extensive crew of dedicated staff and volunteers to welcome you to Black Oak Ranch for a weekend of fun and music. We appreciate the work of all these folks, and the support of our sponsors, coming together to help create a supportive atmosphere for an unforgettable experience with you, the life support of our gathering. As always, we’d like to thank the Black Oak Ranch community for opening their gates to share the peace and magic of this inspiring land. Please do your part by respecting their community space, and that of your festival neighbors. What better way to celebrate a true sense of community, and a woman who embodied that spirit in Kate Wolf, than to share time, music, and space in a peaceful, positive, and caring way. Over the years we have experienced that kindness, gentleness, friendliness, patience, and

understanding have proven to be the backbone of this gathering as an increasingly diverse group of folks come together to share in this unique experience that awaits all who venture out to the festival. Lyrics from our traditional festival closing song, ‘Give Yourself To Love’, by Kate Wolf, help to describe our shared experience: That what brings us together here has blessed us all today Love has made a circle that holds us all inside Where strangers are as family and loneliness can’t hide We hope you enjoy this all too brief moment in time and then proceed to spread the joy shared to others in your own community. And in the words of the great Jimmy Durante, “Make someone happy, make just someone happy, and you will be happy too.” And remember, when you do leave, please double check if all your belongings are with you and make sure to drive home safely! Cheers, Back Roads Productions and the Festival Staff

They are here for us all. Remember this is the dry time of year. 1) NO FIREWORKS 2) In the music bowl: Smoke (anything) only in the designated areas. General courtesy to all. Everywhere else: No Smoking while Walking (Fire Hazard). 3) NO INDIVIDUAL FIRES OF ANY KIND. No BBQs. Please remember, any empty chair may be occupied by any person until the chair’s owner returns. 8) The “Alter-Abled” section of the bowl is reserved for patrons with various physical needs and/or restrictions and an accompanying helper(s). Due to limitations of this section’s size please respect this space for those folks that will benefit most from its use. 9) No video cameras allowed in the main music bowl. 10) Please use common sense and courtesy when playing music in the camp late at night. Any music (at other than a stage) deemed to be excessively loud after 1:00 am will be asked to have its volume reduced by overnight security. 11) Lost and Found is located at Security Central. 12) RV owners – Generators may only be used to charge your system during daylight hours, starting after 10:00 am. As you wander around day or night, be careful of obstacles, as this campground is a natural woodland area and natural hazards may be present. Please note that camping involves exposure to the elements, nature’s creatures, rough terrain and an absence of artificial lighting. You may, therefore, be exposed to bug bites, sunstroke, your neighbor’s virus, or tripping, especially if you wander about off the designated fire roads, or in the dark. Your entry to the campground constitutes your voluntary and knowing assumption of these and all other risks and your agreement that Back Roads Productions, the owners/lessee/occupiers and others in control of the ranch have no responsibility to you for any injury, loss, or damages you may claim from occurrences during your stay on the property. We recommend the use of a “flashlight at all times after dark. Be mindful of the effects of alcohol and drug use; look after your brothers and sisters. Out of concern for those who wish to sleep, please keep the late night noise down. If you are having trouble with any matter you cannot deal with, we would be pleased to assist. We love this land and know that you do too, so be sensitive to Mother Earth. Pick up and take care.

If you need to go into town during the festival, please contact Security Central for the best in/out access.

FIRE SAFETY COMES FIRST:

Black Oak Ranch is located in the center of a rural area in Northern California and as such we are always looking for ways to keep our facility fire safe. It is of upmost importance that everyone on site pay attention to fire safety while camping out at the ranch. In order to provide a safe environment for a few thousand campers we have made arrangements with the Myers Flat Volunteer Fire Department to bring their beautiful fire engine here for the weekend so we can have a crew on hand for whatever emergencies come up. In addition we have a contract with the Long Valley Fire Protection District for their assistance in medical and fire emergencies. We also have a small 4x4 Toyota fire tender with a 150 gallon water tank available for quick access all over the festival grounds. If you see a fire, report it immediately to the fire or security crew, or any staff you see. There are a series of red fire barrels located along the main roads near street signposts in the campground. Next to these large barrels are 5 gallon buckets filled with wet burlap sacks. In an emergency these buckets can be carried directly to the fire source and the wet burlap sacks can be thrown on the fire, as well as the water in the bucket. The large barrels are for re-filling the 5 gallon buckets if more water is needed. Please never use these barrels or buckets except in emergencies! It is important that they are in place when they are needed. Let’s all do what we can to make these options never become necessary. The fire policy at Black Oak Ranch is no open “flames." This means no candles. No charcoal BBQ’s, but gas cook stoves and gas lanterns are ok when you clear a space all-around of at least 6 feet underneath the stove to prevent sparks from catching fire. No campfires, fireworks, fire juggling, flaming sword swallowing, burning bushes, you get it, NO OPEN FLAMES PERIOD!

GREENING INITIATIVE: Deposits on reusable cups

I

n our ongoing efforts to present as green a festival as is possible, over the last few years we have endeavored to convert our beer cups from disposables to reusables. We have tried a few different approaches and this year we will be bringing back the same system we’ve used the last several years. When you go to the beer garden to purchase a beer you have two options. Option I: Purchase a beer for $7 and pay a deposit of $2.00 for your reusable plastic cup. When you finish your beer you can return the cup for a $1.00 refund, or for a ticket that you can use for the deposit the next time you want a beer. At the end of the weekend you can either return the ticket or the cup for a $1.00 refund. Option II: Purchase a 22nd anniversary commemorative Kate Wolf Music Festival stainless steel cup for $8 ($15 with beer) and avoid the $2 deposit. There is a limited supply of these commemorative cups, which you can use all weekend and take home when you leave. The thought behind these options is to provide a clean, healthy alternative to disposable cups. The operation to wash, dry and re-supply cups to the bar all weekend long comes at a fairly hefty price, which we are trying to partially cover by keeping a portion of the deposit. If you would rather re-use your cup all weekend long, there is no additional charge per beer and you can exchange the cup for $1.00 when you want. If you would rather not keep track of your cup all weekend long, you can avail yourself to our deposit/reuse program. Over the years we have looked for ways to stay in the forefront of green festival operations. In our desire to use less water we have been using a dust suppressant called Dust-off, made from seawater and approved for use by organic farms. This allows us to refrain from using many thousands of gallons of water on our roads and keeps the festival site much more dust free than water ever could. Our cleanup crew is adept at sorting through

8

2017 Kate Wolf Music Festival

REUSABLE CUPS

all garbage to remove recyclables from the refuse stream, keeping landfill to a minimum. Many of our crews use bicycles in their efforts to move around the site. We encourage patrons to bring their bikes as well, providing bike racks at the entrances to the music meadow where you can lock it up while enjoying the show. Pedicabs are available for a fee from our friends at Pedicab People Movers who can move you all over the festival grounds

as needed. They are located right next to the fire crew camp by the Tiki poles. We offer an online ride share program for those wishing to share car space when coming to the festival too. All of these things add up. We appreciate your help in trying to make the Kate Wolf Music Festival as green as it can be. Thanks for all of your efforts!

CREEK INFORMATION:

The creek that runs along the western edge of the festival grounds is called Ten Mile Creek, and is a salmon bearing stream that traditionally sees annual migrations by spawning Steelhead, Chinook, and Coho salmon. The owners of Black Oak Ranch have been working closely with a variety of agencies and groups endeavoring to study the creek and it’s inhabitants in order to help in keeping this stream a healthy place for all. In recent years drought has exacerbated the problems facing the flora and fauna along the riparian zone so we are asking everyone to be especially sensitive and watchful when entering and using the creek this weekend. Do not go into the trees and bushes that line the creek, only use the access points we’ve established for entering and exiting. This year’s abundant rainfall has given us a beautifully full creek for swimming and wading. It may be deeper than you remember, so keep an eye out for kids and each other so we can all be safe. 10 Mile Creek - p. Barlow

H Established 1945 H HOBO JUNGLE:

Campfire Nightly A Kate Wolf Music Festival tradition, the word is out that some of the most touching, funny and creative songs are heard every night around the campfire down by the creek (see site map on page 5) after the main stage ends. Bring your instruments, songs, and your No– Doze for this sing–a–thon of some of the best music you’ll hear—yours! Everyone gets to sing. Some great stories are shared as well. We do ask all attending the Hobo Jungle to remember that some folks like to sleep, and the tent camping area isn’t too far from the fire, so this year when a song comes to a close instead of clapping and hollering your approval, try snapping your fingers, or waving your hands above your head, in quiet appreciation.

ACHILLES WHEEL

Thursday, 4:00 pm - Utahpia Stage Friday, 11:00 pm - Arlo Stage (w/ Keith Greeninger, Joe Craven & Dayan Kai) "...Nothing ever overpowers anything else; the blend is seamless and compulsively listenable." – Deborah Grabien, No Depression Achilles Wheel is a California based rock and roll band that blurs the lines between genres and fuses an infectious blend of Roots and World Music, Rockadelia. Their sound comes across as both Old School and New School and is riddled with great songwriting. The one thing that rises to the surface as you get to know this band is that supporting the benefit of our human condition is foremost in their work. They play hard as a way to break down walls and celebrate life. The idealism that they embraced as younger men has not diminished in the harsh light of the modern world as we struggle to live freely and have a good time, and in the end, hopefully matter. Achilles Wheel fearlessly sings out to these times. Gratefulweb writer Dylan Muhlberg who had this to say… “The stylistic capacity of Achilles Wheel is ever surprising, constantly evocative of something warmly familiar, but never entirely definite. It’s that blend of well-structured solos, integrated musicianship, beautiful vocal melodies and strengthened songwriting that has been Achilles Wheel from the beginning but now finds them in peak form. As expansive of an achievement as Devil In The Yard is, their improvisational expertise and interlocked dexterity makes their live show a spectacular event on its own level. This album is bound to make some new lifelong followers of the Nevada City rockers.”

BAKA BEYOND

Friday, 4:05 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage Saturday, 4:00 pm - Arlo Stage Sunday, 1:50 pm - Revival Tent (vocal & rhythm workshop) "If there has to be a definition of world music, this is it! - Andy Kershaw "It was impossible to resist the relentlessly upbeat nature of the music...there were big smiles on screen, on stage, and in the audience as the music progressed to a final grand dance with everyone standing Baka Beyond

and moving to the intoxicating rhythm" – Pete Taberner, Bristol Post The rhythms of the hunter-gatherer Baka People from the Cameroon rainforest resonate with musical styles from all around the world. Baka Beyond use them to tie music from different genres together. Also carried in these rhythms and in all Baka Beyond performances is the sense of joyous celebration and inclusion that the Baka bring to all their music. The band brings musicians from different cultures and backgrounds together in a seamless celebration of the Global Village. Baka Beyond are not recreating other people’s music. They use the spirit of the Baka’s music to present their own musical heritage, whether the Rhumba rhythms of Kibi’s native Congo, or the Celtic melodies of Martin’s Cornish/Welsh heritage, seamlessly combined. After 21 years of touring around the world Baka Beyond’s live show has evolved over the years. Their live show includes song, dance, percussion, musical virtuosity, videos and big smiles all round.

BARBARA HIGBIE

Friday, 3:05 pm - Utahpia Stage (w/ Joe Craven) Saturday, 6:45 pm - Revival Tent (w/ S. Austin, K. Greeninger, D. Kai,) (Kate Wolf sing-along) “Higbie generated energy and enthusiasm whenever she was on stage, like a jolt of bright sunlight.” – L.A. Times “Higbie is a high priestess of collaboration….” – SF Gate Berkeley’s Barbara Higbie is a master of piano and violin who combines technical brilliance with the pure joy of playing. Her unique compositions weave together elements of jazz, folk, and classical with the music of Ghana and Brazil. Oh, and she also sings like a dream. She has been nominated for a Grammy award, won Bammy awards, performed on more than 65 albums, including one with Santana, one with Linda Tillery and Laurie Lewis, and three with Montreux, the band she co-founded with Darol Anger. Her latest album, Scenes From Life, is an all-instrumental collection featuring 13 new originals, that Singout! calls “highly recommended” and critic Andrew Gilbert describes as “gorgeously cinematic.” In the words of the Los Angeles Times, Barbara is a “jolt of bright sunlight” – and everyone in the audience feels her warmth. BLIND PILOT

Friday, 8:05 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage "Blind Pilot is the kind of band that's really easy to fall for...they possess a keen sense of tone and dynamics, part of an ability to create melodies that ebb and flow through an emotional sweep." – No Depression Portland, Oregon-based Blind Pilot’s 2008 recording debut, 3 Rounds and a Sound, captured folks’ attentions, introducing us to an important new songwriter in singer Israel Nebeker and a fresh approach to thoughtful, literate indie-folk. Nebeker and duo-mate Ryan Dobrowski embarked on a bicycle tour of the West Coast, instruments and all. They expanded to a sextet, did a second West Coast tour on bikes, and picked up steam with the release of We Are The Tide in 2011. Accolades, charting, Letterman and Ellen, Newport Folk, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza followed. But it was to be five years before their next recording, when And Then Like Lions was released in August 2016 to critical acclaim. Grief in many forms had intervened for Nebeker, including the loss of his father to cancer. He says, “Avoiding suffering is avoiding real happiness too. BRANDI CARLILE

Saturday, 8:00 pm - Meadow Stage "Brandi Carlile's songs are emotional and heartfelt, yet they never feel mawkish, thanks to her thundering voice and lyrics that describe complicated relationships with simple, powerful elegance." – NPR Seattle-based Brandi Carlile, a literate singer/songwriter whose music splits the difference between pop/rock and folksy Americana, says: “Everyone needs to risk something.” She’s talking about the M.O. behind 'The Firewatcher’s Daughter', her stunning 2015 release. The 12-song collection represents her strongest, most rock & roll album to date. Carlile and her indispensable collaborators, Tim and Phil Hanseroth, a.k.a. The Twins, have always offered listeners both control and abandon. Yet, over four acclaimed albums and countless sold-out tours, Carlile and The Twins had yet to capture the distinctive spark of old friends working up new tunes, a slippery magic born of years touring together. 'The Firewatcher’s Daughter', by contrast, is a full-on Carlile/Twins co-production with complete artistic control. With this new freedom they tracked the album live, with little or no rehearsal, and wrangled it all into song, catching many lightning-in-a-bottle moments — the crackling Lucinda Williams-meets-Fleetwood Mac of “Wherever Is Your Heart,” the CSN-meets-Bonnie Raitt of “The Eye,” and more — all executed without a net. “My goal,” Carlile says, “is to connect with our longtime fans and friends, and to reach new people with the honesty of this music. Also, I would like my daughter Evangeline to grow up and think I’m cool.”

Artists Continued J ‘60s…- Cockburn sings about injustice and condemned imperialism, without sounding sanctimonious." – PopMatters For 40 years, this Canadian musical legend has been capturing in song the essence of human experience – while fiercely striving to make it better. One of Canada’s finest artists, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala, Mali, Mozambique, and Nepal, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders. “My job,” he explains, “is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal.” That scratching and pulling has earned Cockburn high praise as an exceptional songwriter and a revered guitarist. His songs of romance, protest, and spiritual discovery are among the best to have emerged from Canada over the last 40 years. His guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, has placed him in the company of the world’s top instrumentalists. And he remains deeply respected for his activism on issues from native rights and land mines to the environment and Third World debt, working for organizations such as Oxfam, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and Friends of the Earth. Throughout his career, Cockburn has deftly captured the joy, pain, fear, and faith of human experience in song. Whether singing about retreating to the country or going up against chaos, tackling imperialist lies or embracing ecclesiastical truths, he has always expressed a tough yet hopeful stance: to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight. “We can’t settle for things as they are,” he once warned. “If you don’t tackle the problems, they’re going to get worse.” For his many achievements, the Ottawa-born artist has been honoured with 12 Juno Awards, an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, and has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada. But he never rests on his laurels. “I’d rather think about what I’m going to do next,” says Cockburn. “My models for graceful aging are guys like John Lee Hooker and Mississippi John Hurt, who never stop working till they drop, as I fully expect to be doing, and just getting better as musicians and as human beings.” Bruce Cockburn

His commitment to growth has made Bruce Cockburn both an exemplary citizen and a legendary artist whose prized songbook will be celebrated for many years to come.

CAROLYN SILLS COMBO

Saturday, 9:10 pm - Revival Tent Sunday, 4:00 pm - Utahpia Stage "Sills and her eclectic combo took to the stage like old pros, as their professional, fun and charming manner won the crowd over in a heartbeat. This is by far one of the coolest shows I’ve been to in quite a while." – Paste Magazine "She has enough soul, heart, style and swag to convince audiences and listeners that they may have been transported to an era where country swing rules the waves, juke joints were the place to be, and heartache had a kick like a mule." – Cat Johnson, Good Times Magazine A roots music group with a vintage sound older than its years, The Carolyn Sills Combo is breathing fresh life into the timeless sounds of post-war American music. Nominated for a 2016 and 2017 Ameripolitan Award for Western Swing group and a 2016 Academy of Western Artist Award for western swing group, female, album and song (Even Villains Once Were Babies), fans of classic country and western swing are falling in love with the band’s original songs, written and produced by Sills and her longtime guitarist and husband, Gerard Egan. The cowboy loving duo attracted top Monterey Bay area players for their combo, featuring Charlie Joe Wallace on steel guitar, Jim Norris on drums and Sunshine Jackson on harmony vocals and percussion. Sills and Egan are heavily influenced by spaghetti western films as well as their vinyl record collection, citing a wide range of influences from Bob Wills, Patsy Cline and Merle Travis and Les Paul & Mary Ford. Word of their authentic live show is spreading quickly throughout California, chock full of three part vocal harmonies, dueling guitar and steel instrumentals and tight arrangements of their own distinct brand of Americana. “This is real, swinging, juke box music,” says Sills. “We’re tipping our hats to the music that made us want to play, and hoping our original takes on these classic styles will keep the genres moving forward.’

CARRIE RODRIGUEZ

Saturday, 6:10 pm - Arlo Tent Sunday, 2:50 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage “She’s the trifecta for me – beautiful singer, soulful songwriter, and kick-ass fiddler.” – author Brené Brown Carrie Rodriguez, a singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas, finds beauty in the cross-pollination of diverse traditions. A passionate performer, she effortlessly melds fiery fiddle playing, electrifying vocals and a fresh interpretation of new and classic songs with an “Ameri-Chicana” attitude. Her newest project, Spanish/English album “Lola,” is both a return to her musical roots and something of a departure where she delivers her own twangy, Texas-bred twist on Mexican Ranchera songs, creating culturally blended music for a culturally blended world. Carrie, an Austin native, began playing violin at age five. Her training quickly became the passion and focus of her childhood, and by age 10, she had performed as part of a group at Carnegie Hall. She continued the classical track in her first year at Oberlin Conservatory, then shifted gears to pursue her true love affair with the fiddle—staying true to her Texas roots—at the Berklee College of Music.Early in her career, a collaboration with singer-songwriter Chip Taylor resulted in four highly acclaimed duet albums. Her subsequent solo albums highlight the diversity of her musical identity, from her debut “Seven Angels on a Bicycle” to 2013’s “Give Me All You Got,” which reached no. 1 on the Americana Music Charts. Carrie has toured, recorded and co-written songs with legendary artists such as Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Bill Frisell, Rickie Lee Jones, Mary Gauthier, Los Lobos, Alejandro Escovedo and Los Lonely Boys, among others. She has made numerous television and radio appearances, including Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show and A Prairie Home Companion. She has been profiled in many publications, including Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Times of London, The New Yorker, the Washington Post and many more.Carrie lives in Austin with her partner and musical collaborator Luke Jacobs, a multi- instrumentalist/singer-songwriter from Minnesota, and their son, Cruz Calvin Jacobs.

guitars. They make crooning cool again." - No Depression Given the rising popularity of meditative, folky indie acts in the early 2000s, forming a twangy, rootsy folk trio was probably the least surprising move Derek Fudesco could have made. The former bassist and founding member of the successful indie rock group Pretty Girls Make Graves picked up an acoustic guitar and formed the Cave Singers following PGMG’s demise in January 2007, teaming up with vocalist Pete Quirk and drummer Marty Lund. The Cave Singers released two albums on both Matador and Jagjaguwar Records. Following these releases, The Cave Singers began work on their fifth album. Rather than working with a record company, they opted to coordinate the project themselves and financed the recording through a crowdfunding campaign. The campaign raised 116 percent of the group’s goal, and the album, Banshee, was released in February 2016.

CHARLIE THOMAS AND THE DRIFTERS

Friday, 6:00 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage The Drifters weathered drastic changes in the music industry. They began as one of the greatest of the R&B groups…and finished up as soul singers in the later 60’s. The Drifters could do it all. The Drifters did it all.” -- Marv Goldberg – Music historian and writer Charlie Thomas (born 7 April 1937 in Lynchburg, Virginia) is an American rhythm and blues singer best known for his work with The Drifters. Thomas was performing with The Five Crowns at the Apollo Theater in 1958 when George Treadwell fired his group, called The Drifters. Treadwell recruited the Crowns to become the new Drifters. The new line-up consisted of Ben E. King (lead tenor), Charlie Thomas (tenor), Dock Green (baritone), and Elsbeary Hobbs (bass). This new lineup, widely considered the “true” golden age of the group, released several singles with King on lead that became chart hits. “There Goes My Baby” was the first commercial rock-and-roll recording to include a string orchestra, a Top 10 hit, and number 193 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. “Dance With Me” followed, and then “This Magic Moment” (number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960). “Save the Last Dance for Me” reached # 1 on the U.S. pop charts and #2 in the UK. This was followed by “I Count The Tears.” This version of The Drifters was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000. the cave singers (ABOVE), Charlie Thomas and The Drifters (below)

CROW AND THE CANYON

Saturday, 2:50 pm - Revival Tent Sunday, 1:55 pm - Utahpia Stage “The joy with which the band plays is palpable, both live and on record, and one only needs to take a gander at the miles-wide smiles of both the group on stage and the audience to know this music is affecting people on a very real level.” – Donovan Farley, Jambase Although the band has only been playing together since 2014, Crow and the Canyon sound like a band of age-old collaborators and friends. Their heartfelt yet cerebral lyrics, soaring vocals, and impressive instrumentals are endlessly listenable, while also remaining inventive and interesting. Their debut album, Leaving Soon, is a refreshingly contemplative take on high-spirited Americana songwriting which rewards repeated listening, and weaves back and forth between precise bluegrass, heartland acoustic folk, and bluesy country. The result is a series of songs that sound just as natural on a front porch in the heat of summer, in a dimly lit basement pub in the dead of winter or rollicking on a big festival stage. Their charismatic, engaging performances have garnered them a beloved reputation that keeps music lovers returning time and time again.

DANNY CLICK & THE HELL YEAHS!

Friday, 2:30 pm - Arlo Stage Saturday, 2:50 pm - Revival Tent “A hidden gem…a scorching guitarist with a potent roots rock sound.” Andrew Gilbert - SF Chronicle Until a few years ago, Danny Click was one of Austin’s best-kept secrets, a musician’s musician who’d won the respect of some of alt-country’s biggest names but hadn’t yet found widespread recognition. That changed when Click’s latest CD, Life Is A Good Place, was released in April, 2011 and spent more than 12 consecutive months on the Country, pop, and Americana radio charts. The first single, “Wait My Turn”, reached #1 on Nashville’s Indie World Country Chart, and the second single, “I Feel Good Today”, Crow and The Canyon

topped out at #14 on the NMW national Country chart alongside Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift. In the San Francisco Bay Area, where Click now resides, he’s built a large and passionate fan base that includes musical greats Carlos Santana and Elvin Bishop, both of whom have joined him on stage for impromptu jams. Click and his band The Hell Yeahs, featuring a round-robin roster of top-shelf musicians including Bonnie Hayes on keyboards and Kevin Hayes (Robert Cray) on drums, have played more than 200 sold-out shows over the past two years, as well as opening for legends Sonny Landreth and JJ Cale. In April 2015, Danny and band finished a brand new studio album with legendary producer Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, etc.) which was released worldwide on Sept. 18 and promises to kick it up a serious notch.Fasten your seat-belts.

Simon Holland - Folk Radio, UK Dar Williams’ twenty albums, tell stories of humor, friendship, engagement, gender, and geography. She has toured with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, Lucy Kaplansky, Shawn Colvin, Girlyman, Joan Baez, and Catie Curtis. Hit songs include “When I Was A Boy” and “The Christians and the Pagans,” finding joy in the challenges and triumphs of family, religion, and connection. Every new album from Dar Williams represents her thoughts and feelings about both her own life and larger forces in the world. But her ninth studio record, Emerald, marks a particularly dramatic confluence between her experiences and broader contemporary culture—and what it means to be a songwriter at this moment in history. In the past few years, Williams has been involved in a wide range of different efforts and projects: teaching a course titled “Music Movements in a Capitalist Democracy” at her alma mater, Wesleyan University; working with children at several summer camps; leading songwriting workshops; getting involved with the workings of her village; and writing

Not at gunpoint or anything—the two had never even met—but the effect of hearing the songwriting legend's music for the first time had an equally compelling effect on Luning, who was studying film scoring at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at the time. Now an accomplished artist in his own right, Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, 'Restless,' and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything. Luning started his career playing the Northern California open mic circuit before touring the west coast with Dave and Phil Alvin, Elvin Bishop, and Jackie Greene with festival appearances as well. Luning performs with his longtime bandmates Ben Dubin (bass & harmonica), Linden Reed (drums), and Dave Sampson (guitar & mandolin). If that sounds familiar, perhaps like the attitude of a man who might risk everything to drop out of school and move across the country to pursue a dream, it’s no coincidence. With songs this good, it’s a safe bet that a restless soul like David Luning is going to keep on traveling for a long time to come.

Saturday, 3:45 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage Sunday, 7:30 pm - Arlo Stage (w/ Dar Williams & Laura Love) “Ferron writes of love with the relentless introspection of Leonard Cohen, and, as with classic Bob Dylan, her songs’ tough, questioning attitude sometimes gives way to the unexpected“. – Rolling Stone Magazine FERRON, is a Canadian-born singer-songwriter and poet. In addition to gaining fame as one of Canada’s most respected songwriters, Ferron first became one of the most influential lyrical songwriters of the women’s music circuit, and an important influence on later musicians such as Ani Di Franco, Mary Gauthier and the Indigo Girls. From the mid-eighties on, Ferron’s songwriting talents have been recognized and appreciated by music critics and broader audiences, with comparisons being made to the writing talents of Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. With a career spanning 40+ years, Ferron is a real salt of the earth singer who approaches her art with both sleeves rolled up, ready to dive in. She walks her talk with heart exposed and performs with a courage and commitment that few other artists ever muster. She illuminates human experience in a way that few artists are capable of. Like fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen, Ferron has such self-possession and intuitive command of her material that she can deliver lines that a less experienced singer would never be able to pull off. The weight, poise and gravity that she communicates with each word, each carefully enunciated phrase, is something to marvel at. The words she sings sound ancient, irrefutable and significant. Joe Craven’s resume is simply as impressive as they come as a recording artist, performer, and teacher. Joe’s talents were evident in his alternately slicing and sweet violin and percolating percussion playing which was a focal point of the David Grisman Quintet for 17 years, including all of the choice sessions Grisman, Craven and company cut with Stephane Grappelli and Jerry Garcia. Craven took his skills and spent another seven years working with banjo master Alison Browne and just for good measure added his talents to the acoustic super group Psychograss that included a number of other members of the Grisman alumni-association, (Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, Darol Anger) as well as Tim O’Brien and Tony Trischka. Along the way Craven has also recorded four solo discs, with his Django Latino outing considered an absolute gem that found him interpreting the music of the Hot Club of France with a number of Latin flavors. “Everything Joe touches turns to music,” says David Grisman. Armed with a harmonica rack and an acoustic guitar, Rafael chronicles his life and the world around him with songs rooted in the American folk tradition, and influenced by Woody Guthrie, with whom he shares five co-writes. “Joel Rafael’s songs are filled with passion and compassion,” says Jackson Browne. “Passion for social justice, and compassion – for those among us who have to struggle for a place at the table of American prosperity. Classics like, ‘Angel from Montgomery’,‘Sam Stone,’ ‘Paradise,’ and ‘Hello in There’ speak to the everyday experience of ordinary people with a simple honesty, and an extraordinary ability to get right through to the heart of the listener. Long considered a “songwriter’s songwriter,” John Prine is a rare talent whose writing is greatly admired by his peers. Performers who have recorded from his extensive catalog, include Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Ben Harper, Joan Baez, George Strait, Old Crow Medicine Show, Norah Jones, Bette Midler, Miranda Lambert and many others. “He’s so good, we’re gonna have to break his fingers,” Kris KristofJohn Craigie

ferson said after witnessing a Prine performance. Bob Dylan remarked, “Beautiful songs… Nobody but Prine could write like that.” But long before the awards and accolades, the concerts and many albums, John Prine trudged through snow in the cold Chicago winters, delivering mail across Maywood, his childhood suburb. “I always likened the mail route to a library with no books,” says John Prine. “I passed the time each day making up these little ditties.” John’s parents, William Prine and Verna Ham Prine migrated from Paradise, Kentucky in 1934, joining the many others chasing work in the industrial north. They settled in a west Chicago suburb, and raised four boys. John and his brothers – David, Doug, and Billy – grew up in a close, loving extended family where country music, the Grand ‘Ol Opry, good Southern cooking, and annual visits ‘home’ to Kentucky were as naturally part of their lives as Chicago hot dogs and baseball! With his career spanning more than 40 years Prine continues to perform at sold out shows all over the US, Canada, and Europe. Among the many awards and accolades John has received in recent times include is his 2003 induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, an Americana Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting and was honored at the Library of Congress by US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser. Prine has become for many, not just a well loved and appreciated songwriter, but a bonafide American treasure. MOUTHS OF BABES

Thursday, 6:00 pm - Utahpia Stage Friday, 12:45 pm - Arlo Stage Sunday, 8:10 pm - Revival Tent (w/ R. Girls & D. Luning) "…insanely infectious together onstage, like a musical and a personal love fest all at once.“ – Huffington Post “…this is the kind of music that makes you glad to be alive.” – Michael Mullane, Cafe Veritas With more than a dozen albums and over a thousand shows between them, Ty Greenstein and Ingrid Elizabeth of Mouths of Babes are no strangers to the contemporary folk music scene. For years, their respective bands Girlyman and Coyote Grace captivated thousands of loyal fans as they criss-crossed the country, rocked festival main stages, and toured with the likes of the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams. Now, as Mouths of Babes, Ty and Ingrid have distilled the very best of the songwriting, musicianship, and humor of their previous groups into a new duo that brings more style and depth than ever before. The key to the Mouths of Babes magic is in the contrast; the differences in both their songwriting and personal styles makes for an unusually satisfying yin and yang. The Chicago Tribune writes, “They offer unique counterpoints to one another…the laidback Ty, nattily dressed in a tie and crisp suit jacket, has a rich, lovely alto. Ingrid, clad in a sultry pink satin mini-dress, is a sassy chanteuse with a lilting soprano. Trading jokes and sharing elegant harmonies, the two women display an intuitive professional bond.” They easily switch off lead vocals and play a wide array of instruments, with Ty on acoustic and electric guitars and foot percussion, and Ingrid playing upright bass, ukulele, and cajon.

Paper Bird

Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Paper Bird first emerged from the same environs that launched such outfits as Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats and the Lumineers. The group has toured extensively throughout the U.S., sharing bills with the aforementioned bands, as well as Daryl Hall & John Oates, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Shakey Graves. On Paper Bird, the band collaborates with world renowned musician, singer and songwriter John Oates, who coproduced the album with Aikins’ fellow Canadian David Kalmusky. The album was recorded and mixed at Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville, and for his part, Oates couldn’t be more delighted. Paper Bird has a sound that blends the engaging vocal harmonies of Fleet Foxes and The Lone Bellow with the classic ‘70s stylings of bands like Heart and Fleetwood Mac without imitating or emulating any one of them in particular. Indeed, the new music is rugged, resilient and flush with enthusiasm. It conveys the essence of inspired Americana, while still staying true to its riveting rock regimen.

PLAYING FOR CHANGE

Friday, 8:35 pm - Arlo Stage Saturday, 4:55 pm - Utahpia Stage (Afro Fiesta) Saturday, 10:30 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage "...Those who have experienced the group are mesmerized by it's ability to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music." - qello.com Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music. The idea for this project came from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. Playing For Change was born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders, Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.” In 2005, Mark Johnson was walking in Santa Monica, California, when he heard the voice of Roger Ridley singing “Stand By Me.” Roger had so much soul and conviction in his voice, and Mark approached him about performing “Stand By Me” as a Song Around the World. Roger agreed, and when Mark returned with recording equipment and cameras he asked Roger, “With a voice like yours, why are you singing on the streets?” Roger replied, “Man I’m in the Joy business, I come out to be with the people.” Ever since that day the Playing For Change crew has traveled the world recording and filming musicians, creating Songs Around the World, and building a global family. Creating Songs Around the World inspired us to unite many of the greatest musicians we met throughout our journey in the creation of the Playing For Change Band. These musicians come from many different countries and cultures, but through music they speak the same language. The PFC Band is now touring the world and spreading the message of love and hope to audiences everywhere. The true measure of any movement is what it gives back to the people. We therefore created the Playing For Change Foundation, a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world, and creating hope and inspiration for the future of our planet. No matter who you are or where you come from, we are all united through music.

Singing from the stories of their own life journeys and experiences, their original music is honest, evocative and heartfelt. Introduced by a mutual friend in 2010, Sarah ‘Songbird’ Larkin and Sarah Ryan have been nearly inseparable, musically, since. As founding members of Motherland Family Band in 2011, these ladies began to sculpt their original songs into tightly woven harmonic collaborations. Larkin and Ryan struck out on their own as a duo in 2012 and The Real Sarahs was born. They recorded their first EP CD together in 2013, demonstrating each in their capacity to lead and support and embody beauty through song. RISING APPALACHIA

Saturday, 9:20 pm - Utahpia Stage Sunday, 6:55 pm - Red Tail Hawk Stage “Rising Appalachia stands for everything that tends to get swallowed up in a slick and shiny society.... By resurrecting and reinventing their parents’ nostalgic old folk and mountain music, sisters Leah and Chloe Smith pave the way back to lost simplicities and social responsibility.” – Paste Magazine Rising Appalachia brings to the stage a collection of sounds, stories, and songs steeped in tradition and a devotion to world culture. Intertwining a deep reverence for folk music and a passion for justice, they have made it their life’s work to sing songs that speak to something ancient yet surging with relevance. Whether playing at Red Rocks or in rail cars, at Italian street fairs or to Bulgarian herbalists, this fiercely independent band has blazed a unique and colorful path across the globe. 11 years into their movement, Rising Appalachia believes that the roots of all these old songs are vital to our ever evolving soundscape. Led by the collective voice of sisters Leah and Chloe, and joined by their beloved band – percussionist Biko Casini and bassist/guitarist David Brown – Rising Appalachia is a melting pot of folk music simplicity, textured songwriting, and those bloodline harmonies that only siblings can pull off. Listen for a tapestry of song, clawhammer banjo tunes, fiddle, double bass, acoustic guitar, djembe, barra, bodhran, spoken word, and a wealth of musical layering that will leave you called to action and lulled into rhythmic dance simultaneously. It is both genre bending and familiar at the same time. Proudly born and raised in the concrete jungle of Atlanta, Georgia, sharpening their instincts in the mountains of Appalachia, and fine tuning their soul on the streets of New Orleans they have crafted a 6-album career from the dusts of their passion.

the Summer of Love w/ Poor Man’s Whiskey) “... Their musicianship is a tip of the hat to the originators of Americana who would only want to see a band like The Sam Chase playing music like this... I bet you don’t even know it, but you already like them.” – Danny Sebahar, The Pops The Sam Chase has a voice like a Nun on the lam with a mouthful cigarettes and curse words in a lonely bar, drunkenly dancing next to a broken jukebox. His songs are scribbled, not written, on lipstick and sweat stained motel bedsheets because he likes the way the ink bleeds. His guitar runs on diesel and leaks like the morning after too much Whiskey. His is a show you’ll probably want to tattoo on your body so everyone will know that you knew him before he was cool. Hailing from the hills of San Francisco, California, Sam and his band whom he lovingly refers to as The Untraditional, take to stages all over the country with a virulent and frenetic passion which many history buffs might liken to the Norse warriors known as The Berserkers, who were known to have fought their battles with an uncontrollable, trance-like fury. As of the early hours of 2016, Sam and the band have gone back into the studio and laid down 13 brand new tracks. The new album is slated to drop on April 29th, 2016. Many sages and religious fanatics believe that it will bring about the end of days. Stay safe. These are troubled and unpredictable times.

But if you close your eyes and forget that her last name is synonymous with the river-legacy of a widening current of American folk music, you’d still be drawn to the clarity and soul behind her voice. There is a gentle urgency to her interpretations of the songs she sings and the classic music of her heritage. It flows Sarah Lee Guthrie

from the continuity of her family, her vital artistic life today and the river of songs that have guided her to where she now stands. It’s been hinted at since she first stepped on the stages of Wolf Trap and Carnegie Hall as a teenager in 1993 singing Pete Seeger’s “Sailin’ Down My Golden River” for sold-out audiences. But it was later, when she met her husband, Johnny Irion, grandnephew of Woody Guthrie’s literary kindred spirit, John Steinbeck, that she began to embrace her birthright and her inherent gifts. Over the last two decades on the road and in the studio, she and her husband Johnny Irion have created a signature pop-fused folk-rock sound that is appealing and engaging on series of critically-acclaimed albums Exploration, Folksong, Bright Examples and Wassiac Way.

TRIBUTES ally. One of the places he had hoped to get back to was here, at Black Oak Ranch, to join us one more time before he left us. Jimmy recently passed after a brave, year long battle with spindle cell sarcoma, that he chose to keep quiet until near the end. Fortunately, he was able to be at, and a part of, the Songwriter Rendezvous in Austin that was a living tribute to him provided by a number of great musicians and friends, just three days before passed peacefully at home. We’re all going to miss Jimmy but are most grateful for the legacy of great music, lyrics, performances, work and deeds that he left behind, including this closing stanza from his song ‘Poor Man’s Dream’ that is apropos to our gathering: Find peace and harmony With the lay of the land Stand beneath the big sky And count all the stars That you can Take off your clothes Jump in a clear running stream Soon you’ll be living The poor man’s dream

Chuck Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) “All of us are footnotes to the works of Chuck Berry.” Leonard Cohen There could not be two more similar and different personalities than Chuck Berry and Leonard Cohen. Chuck Berry grew up in a very Christian family, found music early in life, and poetry in

his music later. Leonard Cohen, a Canadian, grew up in a deeply religious Jewish family, started in poetry and found music later in life. Berry was a high school drop out and Cohen a college graduate. Both have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Berry, as a teenager, along with a group of his friends in his 1937 Oldsmobile, ran out of money and robbed a bakery to buy food. At the advise of their lawyer to plead guilty, they were sentenced to the maximum penalty of ten years in jail after a twenty-one minute trial. During the three years he spent in jail, he took up boxing, led a gospel group, and danced with the white wife of a jail superintendent that almost started a race riot behind bars. Upon his release on his twenty-first birthday, October 18, 1947, he worked with his father in carpentry, was a janitor, learned to cut hair, and sang country and hillbilly songs at night. A year later, he met his future wife, Tandy, who would remain with him the rest of his life. But that didn’t mean that Chuck was loyal -- in fact, just the opposite. His big break in the music world came in 1955 when he was discovered by Phil and Leonard Chess, Polish Jewish immigrants, who had founded Chess Records by recording many of the black artists of the day who could not get record deals from the major White owned labels. The relationship was volatile, but successful, and lasted on and off for decades. He was often booked at white clubs because that’s what his music sounded like, until he showed up. His philandering, and temper, got him into more trouble and another jail sentence, only this time his music was discovered by the young Beatles, Beach Boys, and Rolling Stones, who helped make him a star. After this jail sentence, he never had a band again, or would accept checks. If you wanted to book Chuck Berry you had to hire the band and pay in cash before he went on. Bruce Springsteen, as a young guitar player, tells the story of being in one of the bands for Chuck, who never rehearsed. When Springsteen asked what songs are we going to play, Berry said, “Chuck Berry Songs. 1, 2, 3, 4.” Chuck Berry gave his last performance on October 15, 2014 and completed his last record two years later. It was his first new record in 38 years.

Leonard Cohen (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016) Leonard Cohen, on the other hand, was a different kind of rebel. What started as a literary career, morphed into a musical one in 1966 after he became a host of a Montreal current affairs program, “Seven on Six.” During this time, it was Judy Collins who not only began to cover his songs, but convinced him to sing them, as well, and then eventually brought him to the US to perform with Jimi Hendrix at a concert she was doing in Los Angeles. Collins felt that Cohen’s Jewish background was an important influence on his words and music. He often performed in Europe, Israel, Egypt, and Poland, and refused to change any of his lyrics, despite local politics. (Collins appeared at the 2015 Kate Wolf Music Festival). His Judaism turned to Buddhism in 1994 when he entered the Mt. Baldy Zen Center near Los Angeles for a five-year seclusion, became an ordained monk, and left the performance stage. After a fifteen-year hiatus from performing and discovering that his manager had wiped out his life savings, he was forced to go back to work and tour in 2008. With this came a new record in 2012 that became his career’s highest charting ever, reaching the number one position in most countries throughout the world, bringing him a legion of new fans at age 78. Ironically, he performed more later in life. The opposite of Chuck Berry, who performed less. Both artists left us with a treasure trove of songs, poetry, and stories.
