ἓν οἶδα ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα, hèn oîda hóti oudèn oîda I only know that I know nothing. An ancient Greek philosopher said something similar. And this applies somewhat to the world of photography. As you learn, looking for patterns, you realize how little you know. You start working from instinct, picking up the camera you blindly start trying to capture what interests you. When you start liking what you see, you realize there’s something missing and you take the plunge… I only know that I know nothing. You decide to expand your knowledge on the use of the camera, aperture, focus, dynamic range, hyperfocal distance... When you get on top of all this you realize you need even more... I only know that I know nothing. You study composition. Your eyes are opened to a new world. You start seeing lines, colours, contrasts. When you think you have this down, you realize it’s not the case.... I only know that I know nothing. You try to be ground-breaking. You try to capture what you see around you in a personal way, stamp your personal seal on your work. When you think you have finally found your own style you realize that you’re missing something... I only know that I know nothing. Maybe it’s time to go out and take more shots just on instinct, maybe, perhaps. Who knows... I only know that I know nothing.
