MAIJŌ, MASQUE DU THÉÂTRE NOH JA P O N

Par Genkyū Deme Mitsuzane (1732-1812) Cyprès japonais, pigments, crins, cordes, laque (face interne).

Hauteur : 21 cm.

Sceau de l’artiste et inscription en curviligne. Ère Edo, circa 18e siècle.

Maijō est porté par un acteur principal d’une pièce pour incarner un personnage âgé exécutant une danse lente ou une danse solennelle. Ce superbe exemplaire d’une intense expressivité est l’œuvre de Deme Mitsuzane (1732-1812), septième chef de famille des maîtres sculpteurs Echizen Deme. Commandé directement à Mitsuzane pour être offert à une personne importante, bien préservé, il a sans doute « peu dansé » bien qu’il montre quelques usures. Fait rarissime, il est toujours conservé dans sa boite de rangement d’origine annotée par Mitsuzane lui-même.

Edo era, circa 18th century.

Maijō is worn by a main actor to play elderly characters performing a slow dance or a solemn dance. This superb example of intense expressiveness is the work of Deme Mitsuzane (1732-1812) who was the seventh head of the Echizen Deme familly of master carvers. Commissioned directly to Mitsuzane to be offered to an important person, it has probably “not danced a lot” although it shows some wear. Extremely rare, it is still preserved in its original storage box annotated by Mitsuzane himself.

L’épaisse laque sombre protégeant la face interne de cet impressionnant masque indique qu’il fit probablement partie des collections d’un Samurai de renom ou d’un Dammyo, gouverneur de province. Ōtobide incarne souvent le rôle du dieu du tonnerre. Ses globes oculaires métalliques, ronds, saillants et recouverts d’une pigmentation dorée, donnent l’illusion que les yeux roulent, les sourcils en forme de croissant peints en noir créant un intense effet de surprise.

The thick dark lacquer protecting the inner side of this impressive mask indicates that it was probably part of the collections of a renowned Samurai or of a Dammyo, a provincial governor. Ōtobide often plays the role of the thunder god. Its round, protruding, metallic eyeballs covered in gold pigmentation give the illusion that the eyes are rolling, with the crescent-shaped eyebrows painted black creating an intense effect of surprise.

KO-OMOTE, MASQUE DU THÉÂTRE NOH JA P O N

Par Kawachi Daijō Ieshige (décédé en 1645) Cyprès japonais, pigments, laque (face interne).

Hauteur : 21,4 cm.

Sceau appliqué sur la face interne : Tenkaichi Kawachi. Ère Momoyama – début de l’ère Edo, première partie du 17e siècle.

Kawachi Daijō Ieshige, illustre maître sculpteur quatrième chef de la famille Omi Iseki. Ce superbe Ko-omote semble très inspiré par Yuki-no-Ko-omote, un chef-d’œuvre vraisemblablement sculpté par Tatsuemon durant l’ère Muromachi (1338-1573). Ayant beaucoup dansé, le visage montre les signes d’une restauration des pigments au Japon (possiblement vers la fin de l’ère Edo), sans doute en vue de la préservation du masque et de sa continuité d’utilisation.

Ko-omote avec son visage charnu, son léger double menton et son sourire aux lèvres, portraitise une belle aristocrate ingénue.

KO-OMOTE, NOH THEATER MASK JA PA N

Momoyama Era - early Edo Era, first half of the 17th century.

Kawachi Daijō Ieshige, illustrious master sculptor and fourth head of the Omi Iseki family. This superb Ko-omote appears to be very much inspired

by Yuki-no-Ko-omote, a masterpiece likely carved by Tatsuemon during the Muromachi era (1338-1573). Having danced a lot, the face shows signs of having been re-pigmented in Japan (possibly around the end of Edo era), probably with a view to preserving the mask and ensuring its continued use. Ko-omote with her fleshy face, her slight double chin and her smile, portrays a beautiful aristocratic ingenue.

Tenjin, masque assurément impressionnant qui combine des éléments humains et surnaturels est utilisé pour incarner diverses divinités : Amatsukami, dieu légendaire qui descend des cieux et gouverne le pays, sinon un gardien de la loi bouddhiste, ou encore Sugawara no Michizane déifié dans le shintoïsme sous le nom de Tenman-Tenjin.

Tenjin, a certainly impressive mask that combines human and supernatural elements is used to embody various deities: Amatsu-kami, a legendary god who descends from the heavens and governs the country, if not a guardian of Buddhist law, but also Sugawara no Michizane deified in Shintoism as Tenman-Tenjin.

HANAHIKI, MASQUE DU THÉÂTRE KYOGEN JA P O N

Hauteur: 18,8 cm (sans les crins). Ère Edo, circa 18e siècle.

Ancienne étiquette difficilement lisible (face interne): « à remettre (?) à Mr Emile... au décès de Mr Jaequin (?). 20 juin 1935. A Jaequin (?)»

Hanahiki représente généralement une divinité gardienne d’un sanctuaire, mais peut également incarner un esprit agé ou un fantôme. Les masques du Kyogen sont plus rares que ceux du Noh et furent souvent moins bien conservés. Ce très bel exemplaire bien qu’en bon état de conservation montre les signes d’une intense utilisation.

Hanahiki usually represents a guardian deity of a shrine, but can also embody an aged spirit or a ghost. Kyogen masks are rarer than those of the Noh and were often less well preserved. This beautiful example, although in good condition, shows signs of intense use.
