New concert band embraces GTCC students and community members

With a masters of music degree in orchestral conducting from East Carolina University and doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Utah, it is a given that Dr. Larry Spell loves music. But he also enjoys inspiring students in their musical pursuits and connecting musical performances to the community.

When Spell came to Guilford Technical Community College two years ago as a music instructor and assistant professor of creative and performing arts, he arrived with a back-

ground of not only teaching, but also conducting. Some of his experience included director of orchestras at Salt Lake Community College and assistant conductor for the Utah Youth Orchestras and music director and conductor for the Wasatch Symphony, one of the oldest orchestras in the State of Utah. He had previously served as music director and conductor of the Pitt Community College Symphony Orchestra, which he founded in Greenville, N.C., and hoped to create a large ensemble at GTCC to provide students the opportunity to participate in music at a concert level.

Space for such an endeavor was limited at GTCC, however. But when Spell met Allie Arpajian, executive director of the High Point Arts Council, the two soon realized a collaborative effort was just what could make the idea a reality.

The result is a concert band comprised of students, faculty, staff and community members who will practice and perform at Centennial Station Arts Center (originally used as a freight train depot in the 1930’s). The building covers more than 21,000 square feet.

“Allie has fully embraced this project,” Spell, who will conduct the band, said.

“I am a musician myself,”

Arpajian said. “The area has a community orchestra and choir, but no band. Creating a band would fill a void and offer a new outlet for people in the community to enjoy music. It would provide high quality instruction and build the musical community throughout the Triad.

“Making music helps you put things into perspective,” she added. “There are so many wonderful benefits both in the giving and receiving of music. It can mentor musicians to reduce trauma felt from the effects of Covid. It reminds us to be happy and joyful, and listening to music also helps

ghassan’s joins dining opportunities at grandover Village

There are advantages to having a restaurant with a food truck near Sedgefield Country Club during the Wyndham Championship. For Ghassan’s Fresh Mediterranean Eats it meant providing a limited menu via the food truck for the golfers at hole No. 12 during the Pro-Am on Aug. 2. Ghassan’s opened at 6027-J W. Gate City Blvd. in Grandover Village April

4. The restaurant has been busy attracting customers from their former location on West Gate City Boulevard near the Coliseum, which closed in 2020, as well as from residents of Grandover, Adams Farm, Jamestown and other nearby locales. Many can walk from the nearby apartments.

The restaurant features authentic Mediterranean food. It opened in 1975 on High Point Road (now West Gate City Boulevard) in Greensboro by Khaled and Ghassan Fleihan. The brothers had come to the United States due to civil unrest in Lebanon around 1974. Their only experience in the restaurant business was working in their

Glover takes home Wyndham victory

It looked like it would be Russell Henley’s tournament after he opened the Wyndham Championship with a 62. At the end of round two he was still in the lead with 2020 runner-up Billy Horschel one shot back. But Horschel and Lucas Glover were in the lead at the end of round three, with Henley one shot back.

An exciting final round saw Glover in the lead most of the day and Horschel losing ground. Henley birdied hole No. 7 to tie for the lead and actually had the lead briefly at one point.

Then the rains came. Play was sus-

pended at 4:52 p.m. for two hours and three minutes.

When play resumed, Henley birdied par five No. 15th for the lead. In the group behind, Glover nearly hit his approach shot into the water on the same hole. Henley then misjudged his drive on the par 3 16th. It landed on the green then rolled back down the fairway and stopped in a divot. His second shot was on the green but short and rolled back a bit. Henley ended up with a bogey, going back to a tie with Glover. This was the beginning of the end for Henley’s dream of winning.

On hole No. 17, Henley bogeyed and Glover made par. Henley’s

Odds and ends at the Wyndham

• It would not be the Wyndham Championship without rain. The opening round was rainy as were parts of the early rounds on Friday, before the sun came out in the afternoon. It was humid on Saturday.

A severe thunderstorm on Sunday caused a stoppage of play at 4:52 p.m. Play resumed at 6:55 p.m. with the leaders on hole No. 15.

• Columbian Camilo Villegas secured his fourth victory at the 2014 Wyndham Championship at the tour-

nament’s 75 anniversary. He spent the 2023 tournament making his broadcasting debut on the Golf Channel.

• Charley Hoffman made an albatross on No. 15. That means he made 2 on the par 5.

• Sedgefield Country Club member Alex Smalley missed the cut, along with 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson, who missed the cut by one stroke.

• Byeong-hun (Ben) An has had 11 consecutive rounds at Sedgefield in the 60s, but none were good enough for a victory.

father’s rotisserie chicken business. In 1996 Ghassan sold his share to Khaled and went back to Lebanon. Since the name was already established, Khaled kept it.

Like many businesses, Covid-19 took its toll on Ghassan’s. Not only did the West Gate City Boulevard location close but also one at La Bauer Park in downtown Greensboro. A food court location at UNC-G has also closed.

“We decided we needed to close a couple of places, to refocus and decide where we needed to be,” said Lina Fliehan, marketing manager. “We had been looking for about a year and this [Grandover location] came up and we jumped on it. It made sense to us.

“The area is growing. It is exciting to see the potential that is coming.”

It was the first restaurant in Greensboro to offer an ethnic menu featuring items such as kabobs, Lebanese salads and falafel. The homemade spice mixes provide a unique flavor to its famous steak and cheese, kabobs and salad dressing. The menu has evolved over the years to include more authentic homemade Lebanese items such as hummus and tabouli, Mediterranean pasta salad and gluten-free items. They also cater to vegetarian, vegan and keto diets.

The Mediterranean diet includes healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seafood, beans, olive oil and nuts. It is considered one of the most popular diets to follow.

“We make everything fresh,” Fleihan said. “I felt it was important to embrace our culture. Some of our new items like our Harissa Chicken Bowl is a top favorite, for sure.

“We make so many amazing new dips now. I don’t know who to compare us with.”

Her favorite dish is the new Shawarma Rice Bowl, which consists of rice, Shawarma-spiced chicken, fried cauliflower, radish salad, pickled cabbage, topped with tahini, garlic sauce and Lebanese pickles. She recommends the Chicken Bowl for those new to Mediterranean food.

Khaled and Mary Fleihan had five children. The parents are no longer involved day-to-day with the restaurants but still visit the locations and help make decisions. Three of the children work with the company. Daughters Dunia Hilliard is the restaurant manager and Lina is the marketing manager. Son Ziad is the CEO/CFO. There are several in the next generation who will be working summer jobs at Ghassan’s.

“We are so thankful to our community for their loyalty and support over all these years,” said Ziad on the occasion of the restaurant’s 40th anniversary. “We promise to continue bringing you the finest quality food and customer service for many years to come.”

“This community has always been extremely welcoming and we always felt that we were part of a bigger community,” Fleihan added. “We appreciate the warm welcome we’ve received at this location and hope we continue to see all the new and familiar faces. We’re really happy to be here.”

Ghassan’s also has locations at 400 E. Cornwallis Dr. and 1605 Battleground Ave. in Greensboro. All locations are open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Catering is available as is limited delivery.

to lower blood pressure, stress and depression. It can inspire people.”

Spell and Arpajian began discussing the possibility of a concert band in the spring and actively recruiting for it in May. There are currently about 50 people who have signed to participate.

“The first thing I did was reach out to band directors in Guilford, Randolph and Davidson counties,” Spell said. “We have several who will give the band a high level of core players.

“The concert band will be especially good for students who are music education majors. This is the kind of ensemble they will be directing in their profession. But you do not have to be a music major to participate. It is an opportunity for people to continue to engage in their personal art form, which is music.”

The band will preform traditional classic pieces such as those by Gustov Holst, as well as new compositions, which are commissioned by

approach on No. 18 landed on the edge of the green but it rolled back off. He ended with his third bogey in a row. He ended tied for second with Byeong-hun An at 18-under par.

Glover’s tee shot on No. 18 was going left but bounced back into the fairway after hitting a golf cart. With a two-shot lead – and a rainbow in the background – Glover laid up on the par 4 hole. His approach shot was close and he made the putt for his fifth victory.

Young son Lucas Jr. kept saying, “Daddy, you won! Daddy, you won!” as daughter Lucille teared up.

Glover’s win was one shot away from the lowest round shot at Sedgefield Country Club during the Wyndham Championship. Carl Pettersson was 21-under in 2008.

Glover is a major winner, having won the 2009 U.S. Open. He also won

professionals and written for this type of ensemble.

At this time, those interested in performing in the concert band do not have to audition. But participation in the band is geared toward intermediate and advanced players.

“It is clearly not a beginner band,” Spell noted. “We already have a good mix of community and student participants and a nice balance of instruments. But others are welcome to join.

“It is so rewarding to get to make music with other people. I think that is the attraction for anybody.”

Practices will be held at the Centennial Station Arts Center, 121 S. Centennial St., High Point, on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. beginning Aug. 23. A concert is planned for the fall.

Anyone interested in joining the band should visit https://forms. gle/11svRJuKr1BRBEZc7 to complete an online interest form or email Spell at lsspell@gtcc.edu

the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte in 2011 in a playoff and his last win was the 2021 John Deere Classic.

Henley tied for ninth in 2020, seventh in 2021 (in which he finished a stroke out of the six-man playoff that was eventually won by Kevin Kisner) and tied for fifth last year. The one that stings, however, was in 2021 when he led most of the way but struggled with a 71 in the final round. He opened that tournament with a 62 as well, so he had been in this position before.

Five former Wyndham Championship victors made the cut: Jim Herman (2020) tied for 71, J.T. Poston (2019) tied for seventh, Brandt Snedeker (2007 and 2018) tied for 45; Si Woo Ki (2016) tied for 33, Webb Simpson (2011) tied for fifth. 2009 champ Ryan Moore missed the cut.

the PGA Tour reduced the number of players qualifying for the $56.6-million FedExCup Tour Playoffs from 125 to 70 after Sunday’s results. The change led to 68 of the top 100 players on the points list entering the Wyndham in a final attempt to make the first round of the playoffs or improve their position for later in the playoffs.

“This tournament was never viewed as the first playoff event, which it has become,” Geoff Ballotti of Wyndham Hotels and Resorts told Triad Business Journal at the annual champions breakfast on Aug. 3. “After the cut from 125 to 70, this tournament took on a life of its own. There are more eyeballs on this tournament.”

Several golfers missed the 70-point cutoff this year, including Adam Scott (who tied for seventh) and Matt Kuchar. Both men had played in every FedExCup Playoff since the beginning in 2011.

Justin Thomas, looking to continue his streak participating in the FedExCup Playoffs, made a move on Friday to get to seven back of tournament leader Henley.

Thomas said after Friday’s round he was proud of himself for grinding it out.

“I needed to make this cut, literally, very badly,” he said. “If I wanted any chance at what I want to do the rest of the year, I had to make it.”

After spraying his tee shot left into the pine straw on the final hole on Sunday, he nearly made a birdie on his third shot but his pitch hit the pin and bounced off. Birdie would ensure he made it into the playoffs. However, he left during the weather delay without learning his fate.

Although he tied for 12th at the Wyndham Championship, he ended one point out of the playoffs. Thomas won the FedExCup in 2017. Horschel won the Cup in 2014.
