Community supports Rotary in its support of school

Hundreds of people filled the amphitheater at Wrenn Miller Park on Aug. 1 for the town’s annual National Night Out. AM rOdeO provided music for listening and dancing and food trucks were on hand to satisfy evening hunger pangs.
Entertainment was not the only focus of the evening, however. Several organizations had set up tables offering information about their group’s activities, among which was the Jamestown Rotary Club. Rotarians used the opportunity to collect school supplies for Jamestown Elementary School.
“We have collected supplies for schools for several years,” said Jerry Brett, club president. “Members originally made donations on their own but for the past several years we have opened donations up to the community at the National Night Out. We select a spot that people pass to get to the seating area and the town is nice enough to let us have it.”

“None of it would have been possible without the great participation of the Jamestown community,” Brett said. “National Night Out also provided us an opportunity to share our story with the citizens of Jamestown and let them know how much we try to support the local area. There are

Due to the recent severe storm on Aug. 15, the Town will run additional brush pickup routes for the next two weeks, as needed, to assist with brush and limb removal. The Town also will be waiving the excessive brush pickup during this period as long as the brush piles meet the following criteria: no limbs exceeding six (6) feet in length, brush is placed in neat piles at the curb and no trash is comingled with the brush piles. town and they continue to support us in all that we do.”
The mission of the Jamestown Rotary Club is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.
Their mission can be seen throughout the year as they raise funds to enable the club to support others and also contribute service hours in the community. Several
projects club members plan for the later part of 2023 include helping with the annual fall Litter Sweep on Sept. 23, working at the horseshow fundraiser at the Piedmont Saddle Club, highway 68 north of the airport, on Oct. 7, as well as overseeing the Jamestown Christmas Parade Dec. 3.

storm downs trees in Jamestown

Driving around Jamestown since Tuesday afternoon, motorists have seen piles of yard trash along the curbs. Some piles are small, some are large, some are tree trunks and some sit beside the new paper yard waste bags required by the Town.
All this is a result of the huge storm that hit Guilford County Tuesday afternoon.
The storm warnings confused Fox 8 WGHP’s Van Denton. He posted on Facebook: “Was very surprised that no Tornado Warning was issued with 91 mph rotation. We don’t normally break into programming for anything less than a tornado warning but this one was different. We interrupted programming as this looked too bad and could have easily put down a tornado. We did get many damage reports in this area. It was at this time, the National Weather Service upgrading their words on the SVR T-Storm Warning to say 80 mph winds instead of the standard 60. This showed EF1 winds just above the surface. Lunsford joins Town staff

There is another new face at the Jamestown Town Hall.
When Finance Officer Judy Gallman retired July 31, Deputy Finance Officer Faith Wilson moved into that position. Heather Lunsford took over as deputy finance officer on Aug. 1. Fortunately, she had been working with the Town since June 20, learning the ropes.
“I was learning the ropes early while Judy was still here,” Lunsford said, “learning customer service billing, how to accept payments, software and how things are done.”
Lunsford’s duties include
approving invoices, preauditing, purchases, reconciling bank statements, signing checks, helping with the budget, helping with Town Council reports and other duties yet to be determined. She comes to Town Hall

Giovanni’s presents Chairmen of the Board

When General Norman Johnson passed away on October 13, 2010, the whispers around the beach music community, while respectful, were nonetheless ubiquitous. Can the Chairmen of the Board, beach music’s most revered act, survive without their lead singer and songwriter?
While the fans may have pondered the band’s future, there was never any doubt that the two surviving members, Ken Knox and Danny Woods, would not only persevere but thrive.
“One day General pulled me aside and said, ‘Be ready,’” said Knox. “You’ve got to give the people the best show possible.’”
Knox didn’t feel any sense of urgency at the time, but, unbeknownst to him (and everyone else), General was dying of cancer. But a couple of years later he disclosed his diagnosis to Knox and repeated his plea, say-
ing, “You’ve got to keep the legacy going, not for me but for all the people who’ve followed us and supported us over the years.”
Shortly after General’s passing, a memorial concert was held at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
During the show, Knox let it be known that he was looking for musicians, “and the first person who knocked on my door was Thomas Hunter, and old friend and colleague,” Knox said. Hunter has been his frontline mate ever since.
Danny Woods continued to perform until his own health issues sidelined him. He was replaced in 2013 by Brandon Stevens, who left the band last year and was replaced by current member Patrick

Unfortunately, food insecurity is real. For more than 10 years Renaissance Church has tried to help those facing food shortages with boxes of food provided at their building on a weekly basis.
When the church moved to 5114 Harvey Road, Jamestown, its building that once housed a factory provided more room to store and disperse items to those in need. During the pandemic, Renaissance Church found itself also with a collection of non food-related items such as cleaning supplies, toiletries, clothing, toys and even some furniture.
In April 2021, the church connected with CityServe of the Triad to better serve the area’s underprivileged. The organization’s community outreach programs are designed to address the most pressing needs of individuals and families. Doing so fosters a sense of belonging and hope.
“We turn no one away,” said Paula Bost, executive director for CityServe. “We invite them into our building to build relationships with our volunteers and we also allow them to volunteer. We offer refreshments, prayers and classes on various subjects, ensuring a holistic approach to support.”
CityServe of the Triad serves not only individuals, but other churches and non-profits by providing a resource that they, in turn, can use to reach and service their own communities. Partners pay a monthly administration fee to participate.
Approximately 30 churches from all over the Piedmont Triad partner with CityServe of the Triad. A few local ones include Jamestown Presbyterian,
Covenant Church United Methodist and Bethany Fellowship.
“As a non-profit, we accept donations and get resources at greatly reduced rates,” Bost explained. “Our biggest need is non-perishable food items or money to purchase them.”
Renaissance Church is hosting a photo-shoot fundraiser Sept. 1-2 to support CityServe of the Triad. For $10 you will receive one 10x13, two 8x10s, two 5x7s and eight wallets of one pose. Each shoot will include four different poses. Check the Facebook page CityServe of the Triad to schedule an appoint time or contact Bost at 336407-2671.
Boxes of food are available each Saturday from 9-noon. Forms are provided to request other specific needs, which will be filled as possible and can be picked up the following week at the church warehouse.

Don’t take my memories
Editor, The City of High Point contacted me and several other property owners on Knollwood Drive making purchase offers as construction access was needed to do the work on the nearly 100-year-old City Lake Dam. The homes would be demolished. As a property owner and speaking with other owners on Knollwood Drive, we were all afraid that if no one was willing to sell, the City could possibly, legally, take any one of our properties by eminent domain. Thank goodness it has not come to this.
The construction access is potentially at a sacrifice to some homeowners on Knollwood Drive, myself at 207 Knollwood Dr., and two houses right beside me purchased by the City of High Point from owner Ruth Newby’s family. One house right beside my house was demolished within hours with large bulldozers, totally gone forever. Hopefully the Newby’s property will be enough room for the construction access.
It was very sad as I watched with all past memories of growing up and knowing the beautiful families that had lived next door to me in the past.
This is where I grew up with my father and mother, who have both passed. The house was left to me a couple of years ago after my mother’s passing and I have great memories growing up in a friendly neighborhood with so many friends, playing sports, swimming and just overall very happy memories.
My father, Sal Taro Sr., bought the land in 1952 and built the house in 1954. The house backs up to the lake. The City Lake dam is on the left side of the back yard area.
I told the City of High Point of the sentimental value that you can’t put a price on. My father was the owner and president of South Eastern Marble & Tile Company and his work of art is all inside the house.
All floors are beautiful Italian marble and terrazzo floors. I could not bear the thought of my homeplace being torn down.
I rent out the house to tenants on yearly leases.

Jamestown’s Public Services crew was out late Tuesday after the storm making the roads passable. They were still hard at work the following day.
Businesses and residences lost power.
Southern Roots and Full Moon Oyster Bar closed due to loss of refrigerated food when the power was out. Black Powder Smokehouse has a generator and was able to open for dinner.
Jamestown Public Library’s has a fire door between the lobby and adult fiction/non-fiction area. It closed during the power outage. It took several days to have the door reset.
Duke Energy worked hard to restore power but it took more than 24 hours for many locations to have power restored.
City Lake was built in 1928 nearly 100 years ago. Time and the elements have worn down the structure. The Public Service Department of the City of High Point plains to either repair the existing dam old dam or construct a new one. The City has said the dam does not meet current state safety requirements for stability or spillway capacity and has several other safety-related deficiencies. According to news reports, the estimated cost is approximately the same with either option, somewhere in the $20 million range.
Interesting fact, the City Lake dam was used during Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) swimming competitions in the 1950, 1954 and 1963, Platforms were constructed on the dam for contestants to dive into the lake. Some of these competitions were trails in for the Olympics. “ABC Wide World of Sports” broadcast from High Point during the U.S. Senior Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship in 1963.

Original Forestdale had quite a lot of downed trees and power lines. A huge tree in front of Town Hall tree split in the storm. Deputy Finance Officer Heather Lunsford said it was odd that the yard crew happened to come by on their regular schedule right after the storm and were able to clean up some of the mess. There is no word so far if any of the tree can be saved.
Limbs broke a section of the new split rail fence at City Lake Park and across the street at Mendenhall Homeplace. There appears to have been no significant structure damage despite the high winds and falling trees.
One structure that remains standing is the old Robbins-Holton Mill on Dillon Road at Deep River. It looks fragile enough that a child could blow it down, but it withstood the storm.

MecDec lives
A book about the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence published in April has raised again the question of whether on May 20, 1775, a group of county residents adopted such a resolution more than a year before the American Declaration.
“Who’s Your Founding Father? One Man’s Epic Quest to Uncover the First, True Declaration of Independence” was written by David Fleming, a writer and commentator for ESPN. He lives in Davidson.
The publisher’s notes for Fleming’s book assert, “A centuries-old secret document might unravel the origin story of America and reveal the intellectual crime of the millennia in this epic dive into our country’s history to discover the first, true Declaration of Independence...Composed during a clandestine all-night session inside the Charlotte courthouse, the Mecklenburg
Declaration was signed on May 20, 1775—a date that’s still featured on the state flag of North Carolina. A year later, in 1776, Jefferson is believed to have plagiarized the MecDec [a shorthand term for the Mecklenburg Declaration], while composing his own, slightly more famous, Declaration and then, as he was wont to do, covered the whole thing up.”
A book about the MecDec, “The First American Declaration of Independence? The Disputed History of the Mecklenburg Declaration of May 20, 1775,” written by Charlotte attorney Scott Syfert and published in 2014, takes an evenhanded approach to the question of the genuineness of the MecDec. Fleming, on the other hand, is an unambiguous advocate.
The controversy about the MecDec’s genuineness has a long history. Not much was said or written about it and there was little argument until 1819 when a Raleigh newspaper and then newspapers throughout the country published a story with the recollected text of the MecDec. This launched a nationwide fire-
storm of interest and argument about the Mecklenburg Declaration. Former President John Adams wrote former President Thomas Jefferson suggesting that the Mecklenburg Declaration had been the source for Jefferson’s words in the American Declaration. Jefferson responded that the Mecklenburg version was “spurious.”
Fleming argues that the Mecklenburg version was a genuine declaration of independence and that Jefferson copied parts of it for use in the version that he drafted and which became the American Declaration of Independence.
A big problem for Fleming, maybe an insurmountable one, is that no early copies of the Mecklenburg Declaration are available, the original and early copies having been burned or lost over the years. The copies available are largely reconstructions based on memories.
However, as he points out, there is general agreement that a complete text of the Mecklenburg document was published in an edition of a contemporary newspaper, the Cape Fear Mercury. That copy would show, according to Fleming, the complete text of the original 1775 Mecklenburg Declaration and thus prove that similar language in Jefferson’s 1776 declaration was plagiarized.
Records show that colonial Governor Josiah Martin sent a copy of the newspaper to authorities in Britain to show how far the colonists’ rebellion had progressed. Martin’s message and the newspaper had been placed in the British archives.
In a gripping part of his book, Fleming describes his efforts to see that copy. He tells about his recent visit to the British Archives where he found a file that contained copies of the Cape Fear Mercury. But there was a note that the edition containing the text of the Mecklenburg document had been taken in 1837 by the American ambassador, Andrew Stevenson, and was never returned to the archives.

Stevenson, a Virginian and admirer of Thomas Jefferson, had served as speaker of the House of Representatives. Fleming thinks that Stevenson, believing that MecDec’s true text in the newspaper would harm Jefferson’s reputation, disposed of it.
Disappointed, of course, that his key evidence was missing, Fleming is undaunted. In conclusion, he writes about plans for the celebration of MecDec’s semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary in 2025.
NOTE TO READERS:
In working with the MecDec again I have come to two conclusions:
First: There were no actual signers of MecDec. After the resolutions were passed, I doubt they had time to collect signatures. It took more than a month after the American Declaration of Independence was adopted to prepare a formal signing document and collect signatures. The list of signatures on modern copies of MecDec was probably based on the notes and memories of those preparing the copies.
Second: The term “Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence” was not originally a part of the resolutions adopted on May 20. The identifying heading or caption was added later to the various copies. The working title of the American Declaration was “A Declaration of the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress assembled.” I think that the term “Declaration of Independence” was first used in the final of the American Declaration.

Although the Chairmen, who were inducted into the N.C. Music Hall of Fame in 1999, had released 11 albums from 1974-2010, none since Johnson’s passing. Then, in 2017, Knox was approached by noted Motown arranger/songwriter/musician McKinley Jackson. He had written a dozen or so tunes that he felt would be perfect for the Chairmen.
“I hadn’t seen him in 30 years and was gratified that he would offer them to me,” smiled Knox. “So we went over them and he was right — they were perfect for us. So we recorded most of them and I wrote another.” Titled Words Left Unsaid, it was a huge commercial success, proving that the Chairmen still had a large and loyal following.
The trio is backed by a six-piece band, the Executives, all of whom are virtuoso musicians in their own right.
“It’s been truly gratifying that folks still come out and support us,” said Knox. “General told me it’s all about the way you present the music. He can never be replaced, but we can put on a show that preserves the legacy. We still do two or three shows a week, and the response warms my heart; I feel truly blessed.”
Local aficionados will have a chance to see the Chairmen of the Board up close and personal this Saturday, August 26. Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant, 5831 W. Gate City Blvd., has turned its outdoor area into a sparkling concert venue, complete with a covered stage, dance floor, gazebos, lights, VIP area, etc. A full music series is planned, featuring local and regional bands, with an occasional national act.

agent Tracy Mackey. She, owner Robert Holden, and musician and friend of Ken Knox’s Tony Capra are the triumvirate behind the project.
The concert is part of Giovanni’s third annual Wine Fest. A wide array of wines will be offered, as well as a full buffet menu or a limited appetizer menu.
But the main attraction, of course, will be the music. “I took the idea to Robert (Holden) of making this a music event as well as a wine fest,” explained Capra. “My dad (retired owner of Capra’s Deli) used to be in radio, and he would do live remotes with the Chairmen while they were on the road. He and Ken are still close friends.
Plus, Tracy knows the booking business and Ken as well, so she, Robert and I put this thing together.”
The affair will kick off at 4 p.m. with “The 1 Man Band” Gary Woodard, followed by classic rock band Vinyl Tap (in which Capra is a guitarist). Then the Executives will do a set before bringing on the headliners.

Lunsford feels like she is part of a family with her new co-workers. Living in the area, she is glad her friends can come to Town Hall and see a familiar face. An Asheville native, Lunsford, 49, her husband, son and daughter moved to the area in 2009. Her husband is a fire instructor at GTCC. She is active in Gate City Baptist Church, serving on the finance committee, working with the youth, ladies group and singing in the choir. In her spare time,
she likes sewing and traveling to historic places.
One thing Lunsford is looking forward to is redevelopment of the empty storefronts along Main Street, especially the former Wells Fargo location.
With the remodeling of Town Hall, Lunsford has one advantage over Wilson in her position – she has an office. Wilson’s job was added before there was office space, so she spent over a year at a desk in the hall.

GTCC receives $50,000 from All Within My Hands’ Metallica Scholars Initiative

For the second consecutive year, Guilford Technical Community College joined a large group of community colleges across the country to receive funding from the Metallica Scholars Initiative to enhance career and technical education programs.
The Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) was launched in 2019 by Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH), in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
MSI directly supports 42 community colleges across 33 states. By the end of this year, it will have helped more than 6,000 students pursuing careers in the trades. Metallica and AWMH have invested over $6 million in the American workforce.

After Adam’s tragic death in 2000, the Petty family founded Victory Junction, fulfilling Adam’s personal dream of opening a camp for seriously ill children, and the first campers arrived in 2004. Life at Victory Junction is the epitome of respect and teamwork, where children and teens put aside any health limitations and simply focus on fun.
For 13-year-old Mack Raymer, experiencing the joy that is Victory Junction makes him feel like a regular kid — and that is life-changing, explains his mother, Casey Raymer. “At Victory Junction, he isn’t special because of his disabilities or his healthcare challenges, he’s special because he’s Mack — wickedly funny and, as he is quick to tell you ‘adorable Mack’,” she shares.
Mack has been attending camp since he was 8 years old and is part of the neuro/genetics camp because it’s really his genetic condition that is the umbrella under which the rest of his medical conditions fall. Mack has 22q deletion syndrome. That tiny piece of missing DNA has mas-
sive implications for nearly all areas of his health and development.
“Mack spends so much time dreading things — upcoming surgeries (he’s had more than 20, including two open heart surgeries to repair a congenital heart defect), doctor appointments, x-rays, blood draws, the list goes on — it’s wonderful for him to have something he can have unbridled excitement about,” says Casey. Mack’s pediatrician strongly encouraged the family to complete the application and send him to camp — knowing it
would be good for both Mack and his family.
“He had to be brave, and we had to be brave,” says Casey.
“We had been through so much with him; we couldn’t imagine trusting his care to someone else. But, we shouldn’t have worried — Mack couldn’t be in more caring and capable hands than those at Victory Junction. The staff and volunteers are incredible! They are enthusiastic, nurturing, skilled and — most of all — fun!”
In fact, Mack’s typically developing twin brother and his
younger brother are sometimes even a bit jealous he gets to go to such an amazing camp, says his mom!
“He gets to ride in hot air balloons, kiss fish, ride horses, shoot a bow and arrow, ride a zip line, get up-close with NASCAR — he truly gets to be a kid!” Casey adds that the Raymer family truly is a “camp” family — and both Mack’s brothers have been attending sleepaway camps for years. But, Mack could never attend those camps, and even most day camps aren’t equipped to manage his signifi-
cant, specialized healthcare needs.
“There are trips and activities that our other kids would like to do, that just aren’t an option for Mack,” explains Casey. “Knowing he is having an incredible time at camp allows us to do some of those things without feeling like he’s missing out on anything. That makes Victory Junction Camp a true family blessing! Mack’s condition includes a compromised immune system and global developmental delays, and he is also g-tube dependent for all his nutrition. A palate repair surgery is scheduled for this spring — but there is plenty of time for him to recover and be ready for another amazing year of camp! When asked what his favorite thing about Victory Junction is — Mack’s response is simple and from the heart — EVERYTHING!
