p&r Committee learns about park grants
By C a ROL BROOK s F ree LANC e W r I ter cab1hp@gmail.com
The Jamestown Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee met on April 1 to learn about grants and general updates for Jamestown Park.
Scott Coakley, parks and recreation director, asked the committee for a motion of support for the Accessible Parks Grant application from the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.
“The Accessible Parks Grant Program provides $12.5 million in matching grants for parks and recreation to benefit people living with disabilities in North Carolina,” Coakley said. “In 2022, Jamestown was awarded $500,000 to update the playground and provide accessible pathways throughout Jamestown Park.”
Applicants can request a maximum of $500,000 with each application but must match the grant with at least $1 of local funds for every $5 in grant funds, meaning the Town’s match would be $100,000. This funding would come from the state-allocated grant of $200,000.
The matching grants can be used for “construction of special facilities or adaption of existing facilities that meet the unique needs of persons living with disabilities or enable them to participate in recreational and sporting activities, regardless of their abilities,” according to the N.C. Parks website.
“During the planning process for the park upgrades, it became evident that the existing restroom building is lacking essential accessibility and comfort needs to serve our community,” Coakley stated. He noted additional funding is needed to update the restrooms to Americans with Disabilities Act standards, making certain the need was met for both adults and children of all ages to have accessibility and comfort items, such as adult changing tables.
Jennifer K. Skulski, CPSI, remarked on the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) about the importance of playgrounds to all children.
“The public playground is, by far, one of the most important settings for child development,” Skulski said. “It is one of the few environments
like an air traffic controller. I directed everyone where they needed to be and when they needed to be there.
“The groups were very competitive, but in the most friendly, fun way possible,” she added.
Suzanne Ladka (guidance counselor) and Stu Johnston (math teacher) served as Emcees/Hosts.
Judges Antonnia Carter, assistant principal, and Mischa Miles, English teacher, had paddles numbered 1-10 with which to cast their votes for each act. Principal James Gibson had paddles numbered 1-11. The most a group could get was 31 and the top winners got that score.
“All were amazing to watch,” Roberson said. Winners for Dancing with the Staff included:
1st place — Erika Wilson (assistant principal intern) with Bella Jayde and Jamyne McCray
2nd place — Marilla Morrison (English teacher) with Chloe Freeman 3rd Place — Carrington Murray (guidance counselor) with Chaya McBride and Kari Drzymalski
Jamestown School Association, Richard Hay and Shirley Haworth. Since nominations are kept for another year if not awarded and since there was no presentation during Covid, three awards were presented in 2023. Recipients were the Cedarwood Garden Club for establishing the historic herb garden beside the Madison Lindsay House, Gary Haynes for his work in the preservation and maintenance of the old Jamestown Public School/Jamestown Public Library, and Ruby Sapp Leach for recording the African-American history of the Florence and Sapptown area. Established by the Historic Jamestown Society in 2013, the Browning award honors the late well-known local historian and genealogist Mary Browning, who was also the first recipient of the award. She used census records and the National
where a child has the freedom to run and jump, climb, swing and leap, yell, reign, conjure, create, dream, or meditate. In our complicated world, the playground is a safe place for children to come together, to discover the value of play, to learn about each other, to recognize their similarities and differences, to meet physical and social challenges, to leave comfort zones, and evolve into the young people they are meant to be. It is a microcosm for life lessons, from challenge and risk to conflict resolution and cooperation. When we design for these purposes and apply the Principles of Universal Design, we design for inclusive play where every child, regardless of ability or disability, is welcomed and benefits physically, developmentally, emotionally, and socially from the environment.”
Coakley said there are also plans to construct an ADA-compatible walkway to the basketball court.
The Town held an information session on April 3 from 4-6 p.m. at the park to speak about the requirements.
The Parks & Recreation Committee unanimously approved the Accessible Parks Grant application. All awards will be announced Aug. 23.
The Accessible Parks Grant Program is not the only one Coakley is working on. There is also the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant, also administered by N.C. State Parks.
Using PARTF funds, the volleyball court will be moved to where the old restroom septic and leach lines were. New leach and water lines are being installed. Work on the volleyball and basketball courts will begin in a few months. Once the volleyball court has been relocated, staff can begin the bid process for the new inclusive playground.
The Ragsdale Y is renting the baseball fields at Jamestown Park three times a week right now.
Soccer began April 6 and Coakley is looking at other groups to use the fields.
There are three major soccer tournaments scheduled this year, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and Labor Day. Coakley said these would bring out-of state visitors to Jamestown, which will help downtown businesses.

With the special event completed, students are now back to their regular class schedule preparing for their annual spring dance concert, which will be held May 2-3 at 7 p.m. in the Ragsdale High School Auditorium. But the success of Dancing with the Staff has created such interest it might just keep that event going for years to come. “Since they have seen the event, I think we will have more staff members participate next year,” Roberson said. “There was a good turnout and it was fun.”
Archives as well as research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, local libraries and newspaper archives to compile her ever-expanding notes on the area.
Browning almost single-handedly took on the responsibility of documenting the town’s history in five books, multiple newspaper articles and video. As a professional genealogist, she also used her knowledge to help families research their roots.
Browning passed away in 2023.
The Mary A. Browning Historic Preservation Award will be presented Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. The location will be determined at a later date.
The public is invited to attend to learn some of Jamestown’s history and to become involved in the Historic Jamestown Society.
Douglas, secretary; and Gomez, treasurer.
The cost to participate in the 5K is $25. Fleet Feet Sports in High Point is providing prizes for the top three males and females in the event.
The fun run is free for JES students and $2 for family or community members, who would like to walk with the students. Students can ask for pledges from others to earn rewards depending on the amount of money they raise. Donations also will be welcomed.
Registration for the 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. and the run starts at 9 a.m. The course begins and ends at the car loop beside the school. It includes one lap around the fun run track and winds through streets in the original Forestdale neighborhood.
“There will be volunteers at intersections to monitor traffic,” Gomez said. “Also water stations at PTA members’ houses along the way.”
Top sponsors for the event are Bethany Medical, Garcia Paint Co., China Garden and Lenny Peters Foundation. Others will be recognized at the event.
“We will hold the event rain or shine, but we are hopeful it will be shine,” Gomez said with a smile.
Proceeds will be used to fund a computer software reading program for all grades. It includes stories to read and games to play that support reading and may be used in the classroom or at home. This year funds also will provide a similar math program.
Last year, in addition to the reading program, the PTA purchased a laminator for the teachers’ use and this school year held a staff appreciation event to give teachers and staff a small break during the day.

savor the sloppy Jane: A Healthier Twist on a Classic Comfort!
Have you met my friend, Sloppy Jane? You probably already know her cousin, Sloppy Joe. They may be similar, but here’s how you can tell them apart. This Sloppy Jane recipe not only offers a healthier alternative to its cousin, the Sloppy Joe, but it also keeps your wallet happy by being costconscious while creating mouthwatering sandwiches that won’t weigh you down. What sets Sloppy Janes apart from their traditional counterpart is the focus on lean meats and fresh, wholesome ingredients — all without breaking the bank. Unlike the canned sauce varieties loaded with additives and preservatives, our Sloppy Janes sauce prioritizes nutrition and affordability without compromising taste. These Sloppy Janes are a breeze to whip up, making them perfect for busy weeknights. And the best part? They reheat like a dream, so leftovers are just as delightful the next day! I always make a double batch.
This recipe was crafted with ground turkey for a lighter profile without sacrificing an ounce of flavor. However, feel free to get creative with your protein choice. This recipe works well whether you use beef, pork or whatever ground meat is least expensive this week!
SLOPPY JANES
Yield: 4 servings
Total Time: 20 minutes
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 (12 or 16 ounce) bag frozen 3 pepper and onion blend, defrosted (or fresh equivalent)
1 pound 90% lean ground turkey
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons granulated garlic
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
cheese and pickles. Pair this with a crisp green salad or crunchy carrot and celery sticks for a well-rounded meal. Add some French fries or onion rings to really make the kiddies (and kids at heart) happy.
1 teaspoon chili powder
Optional: 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or more to taste
For serving:
4 hamburger buns
1/2 cup shredded cheese
Optional: bread and butter pickles and/or pickled jalapeno slices
Add the olive oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and pepper blend. Cook for 5-7 minutes until they release most of their moisture and are cooked through. Push the peppers to the side and add the turkey. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and no longer pink. Add the salt, pepper and garlic, and stir it all together. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Meanwhile, in a small bowl stir together the tomato sauce, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar, chili powder and cayenne, if using. Add the sauce to the turkey mixture and simmer for 5 minutes or until Sloppy Joes are thickened to your liking, making sure to stir frequently. Adjust seasoning, if needed. Serve hot on toasted buns. Top with shredded
And for those who prefer a set-it-and-forget-it approach, this slow cooker method ensures tender, flavorful Sloppy Janes with minimal effort. Just brown the turkey, toss all the ingredients in your slow cooker, cook on high for 2-3 hours or on low for 6 hours and let the slow cooker work its magic.
If you’d like to stretch this recipe to add extra servings, there are several affordable options. First, you can double the veggies. Or you can just add more chopped onion. A nice, big, chopped sweet onion would be delicious. A can or two of beans would be a good addition, especially pork and beans or baked beans. Also, check your crisper drawer and add any peppers, tomatoes, celery or shredded carrot. These sandwiches are sure to become a household favorite. So tuck in your napkin, because these are delightfully sloppy!
serve students ages 3-22 with cognitive and or physical disabilities,” said Scott Coakley, parks and recreation director, during a talk to members of the Jamestown Business Association on April 4. “We talked to officials at these schools, CJ Greene and Haynes-Inman education centers, during the planning phase for a new universal design playground. They stressed the need for accessible restrooms.”
In other business:
• Music in the Park is scheduled to begin in May at Wrenn Miller Park. It will be held the first Friday of the month from May through October. Members of the JBA will be selling water and sodas at each event.
• Patrick McGill of Patrick McGill Travel introduced himself and explained his business, what it does and how it began.
The current restrooms are original to the park and although they have handicap stalls they are not adequate to meet the needs associated with the new park design. To address the issue of building new bathroom facilities to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, the Town is seeking additional grants to help pay for the cost.
“The two schools are providing letters of support to go with the grant application and I am asking if the JBA would do the same,” Coakley said. “The grant application is due May 1 and awards will be announced in August.”
A motion was made and carried to add the JBA’s letter of support to the others. Coakley explained that work on the new park design has begun and the entire project should be completed by the fall of 2025 if not sooner.
To see details about the grants and new park design see the story “P&R Committee learns about park grants” by Carol Brooks on page 2.
• Jay McQuillan, president of the Historic Jamestown Society noted the mission of that group is to focus on the history of Jamestown, but extends out into Guilford County as well.
• JBA is saturating social media sites to give members more exposure for their businesses. Links will be provided from one business member to others. The creation of an events page separate from the calendar is being considered.
• Zone leader volunteers are needed to aid in the expansion of the 2024 Christmas on Main.
• A brochure to highlight all member businesses, which could be placed a various locations around town, is in the early planning stage. The size and design is to be determined.
• A JBA networking meeting is scheduled for April 15 in the Simply Thai Lounge.
